She Works Hard For The Money Lyrics

She Works Hard For The Money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

I met her there in the corner stand
And she wonders where she is and
It's strange to her
Some people seem to have everything

Nine a.m. on the hour hand
And she's waiting for the bell
And she's looking real pretty
Just waiting for her clientele

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

Twenty-eight years have come and gone
And she's seen a lot of tears
Of the ones who come in
They really seem to need her there

It's a sacrifice working day to day
For little money, just tips for pay
But it's worth it all
To hear them say that they care

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

Already knows
She's seen her bad times
Already knows
These are the good times

She'll never sell out
She never will
Not for a dollar bill
She works hard

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

Hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right
(Alright)

She works hard for the money
(Hard, hard, hard for the money)
So hard for it, honey
(Hard, hard, hard for it, honey)
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
(Hard, hard, hard for the money)
So hard for it, honey
(Hard, hard, hard for it, honey)

She Works Hard For The Money
  • This song was based on a true-to-life experience. Donna Summer was in Chasens restaurant in Los Angeles. She went to the bathroom and saw the attendant taking a nap with a small TV on. Donna startled the woman from her nap, and the woman told Donna she worked two jobs and was really tired. Donna thought to herself, "Wow, she really works hard for her money." Later that night while at home thinking about her, Summer wrote the song in about 20 minutes.
  • The bathroom attendant from Chasens was placed on the back of the album cover. The first line of the song says her name - "Onetta there in the corner stands..."
  • Summer wrote this with Michael Omartian, who also produced the album and played many of the instruments. Omartian also co-wrote "Sailing" with Christopher Cross and produced "We Are The World" with Quincy Jones.
  • The music video was directed by Brian Grant, who was one of the first directors in the medium, having done clips for Queen and The Human League the predated MTV. The video for "She Works Hard For The Money" shows various women working difficult jobs - nurse, housekeeper, waitress - and then joining together in the end for a group dance. According to Summer, this was to show that they have overcome their challenges and succeeded.

The video was very popular on MTV, airing a few months after Michael Jackson broke the MTV color barrier with "Billie Jean." Summer became the first black female singer to land a video in hot rotation on the network.

  • This hard-hitting industrial sprawler is ta track from Tampa, Florida trio Merchandise's Totale Nite EP. It finds frontman Carson Cox singing about the crushing poverty he witnesses in his home city. "It's about the homeless and the streetwalkers that populate that road," he told NME. "It's something our city tries to ignore. I guess I can't help but identify with those people just from walking the same road as them."

    Saltwater Lyrics

    We are a rock revolving
    Around a golden sun
We are a billion children rolled into one
So when I hear about the hole in the sky
    Saltwater wells in my eyes

    We climb the highest mountain
    We'll make the desert bloom
We're so ingenious we can walk the moon
But when I hear of how the forest have died
    Saltwater wells in my eyes

    I have lived for love
    But now that's not enough
For the world I love is dying And now I'm crying
And time is not a friend (no friend of mine)
As friends we're out of time
And it's slowly passing by ....right before our eyes
    We light the deepest ocean
    Send photographs of Mars
We're so enchanted my how clever we are
Why should one baby feel so hungry she cries
    Saltwater wells in my eyes

    I have lived for love
    But now that's not enough
For the world I love is dying And now I'm crying
And time is not a friend (no friend of mine)
As friends we're out of time
And it's slowly passing by ....right before our eyes

    We are a rock revolving
    Around a golden sun
We are a billion children rolled into one
What will I think of me the day that I die

    Saltwater
  • Long before the global warming debate, Julian Lennon released this song about the destruction of the environment and how we as a people needed to do our part to protect it. Lennon would pursue this agenda, forming the The White Feather Foundation to take on environmental issues and help in the distribution of clean water.
  • Lennon wrote this song with Mark Spiro, who would later co-write tracks for Bad English ("Straight To Your Heart"), Giant ("I'll See You In My Dreams"), and John Waite ("How Did I Get By Without You?"). Leslie Spiro (possibly Mark's wife) is also credited on the track - her only composer credit we could find.
  • George Harrison was supposed to help Julian on the slide guitar for the song, but wasn't able to make it because he had to attend to Eric Clapton's son's funeral. Instead, George sent Julian the samples.
  • Atlantic records did very little to promote the album in the US, and it never charted there, but in other parts of the world, this was a huge hit.
  • Julian recorded a Spanish version with the title "Creo Que Voy A Llorar," which means, "I believe/know that I am going to cry."

    Hey You Beautiful Lyrics

    Hey You Beautiful.
    Hey you beautiful.

Hey you beautiful, girl you knock me down
Haven’t seen you before, try to feel you out
Die hard, disregard, coming out your mouth
But your body saying something else

You say that you don’t, don't
But I know you do, do
    Playing hard to get, get,
    Girl I’m onto you,
    Telling me no, no,
    You really mean yes, yes
    Let yourself go, go
    Why don’t you confess?

Whoa, I feel your body calling out to me
    Don’t deny this electricity
Know there’s something dirty on your mind
You don’t have to lie, no
    You don’t have to lie

    Whoa, oh, I know it,
    Whoa, oh, you got it
Whoa, oh, sex is in your eyes
    Whoa, oh, I know it,
    Whoa, oh, you got it
Whoa, oh, sex is in your eyes

OK, now I see you just love the chase
Lucky for you, my dear, that’s my favourite game
Won’t stop till I got you calling my name
You know you can’t resist it baby

You say that you don’t, don't

My Chemical Romance - Helena Lyrics and Youtube Music Videos

Album: Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
    Released: 2004

    Helena Lyrics

    Helena
  • This song is partially about the death of lead singer Gerard Way's grandmother, Elena Lee Rush. She taught Gerard how to draw, paint and sing, and she gave him his first car - the white van that appears in the original "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" video. The song is dedicated to her, as is the CD. She is mainly who the part "Can you hear me? Are you near me?" is for. But this song also starts the concept of the CD. A man and a woman (Helena) die in a car crash ("When both our cars collide"), except the woman doesn't really die, the man only thinks she has. The man is sent to Hell. This song is a mourning for Helena's "death" by the man. He is wishing he could see her again and is giving his last goodbyes ("So long and goodnight").
  • Throughout the Warped Tour 2005, Gerard introduced this song as the most important song to himself and his band.
  • In an interview with the Florida Sun-Sentinel, Way explained that Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is a combination evil, devil-vampire story and sweet tribute to Grandma. The whole CD was to be about revenge and this guy coming back from hell to be reunited with his love, then Elena, Way's grandmother died, and they decided to add in tributes to her because he loved her dearly and she was the one who taught him everything he needs to know to have a good band (i.e. how to sing). He had no idea how it would work with the rest of the CD that was supposed to be a storyline on revenge. "I don't know if it fits," Way says, "but I know that's how we had to make the record. And it's one of those things you just hope works in the end. And actually, the record works so much more on a personal level not only for us but also for the people who listen to it.
  • In Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights Dream, there is a character named Helena who toward the plays' end falls into a deep sleep. This could coincide with the songs' refrain, "So long and Goodnight."
  • Before playing this song during their 2005 American tour, Gerard Way would tell the crowd to look up and say, "Hey Grandma! What's Up?"

My room is big enough for the both of us

I Was Only Nineteen (A Walk In the Light Green) Lyrics

I Was Only Nineteen (A Walk In the Light Green)
  • This is about the Vietnam War. The "Light Green" refers to the area on a map of Vietnam. Dark green was an area where there had been no defoliants ("Agent Orange," for instance) and where there was plenty of cover. Light green meant it had been cleared, but there were likely minefields and probably Vietnamese around (because it had been cleared).
  • The areas named in the first part of the song: Puckapunyal, Townsville, Shoal Water, Nui Dat and Vung Tau are all real places. Puckapunyal was a training center for army recruits. Townsville is a town in Queensland; Shoal Water was used for military training exercises, and Nui Dat and Vung Tau were Australian bases in Vietnam. The "SLR" is the Self Loading Rifle, the standard armament of Australian Infantry in Vietnam. "Greens" in the lyrics are simply camo uniforms. "Chinooks" are helicopters, or "Choppers," and VB is a type of Australian beer - it stands for Victorian Bitters.
  • There's some dispute over whether the lyrics say "Asian Orange" or "Agent Orange." Either could make sense.
  • The "Rash that comes and goes" was a common side effect of working with Agent Orange. It could persist until you died, basically.
  • Being "Dusted Off" means an evacuation of a soldier due to medical reasons. "Contact" means, in this case, either that the soldiers had sighted an enemy or spotted a mine. "Hooked in there for hours" refers to grenades.
  • "The Grand Hotel" was a hotel in Vung Tau that had been converted for Army use. ANZAC stands for "Australian and New Zealand Army Corps." "Pieces" are shrapnel.
  • All the proceeds from this song were donated to the Australian Vietnam Veterans Association.
  • The song precipitated a Royal Commission into the use and effects of chemical agents in the Vietnam War by the Australian military.
  • Since the moon landing was on the 20th of July, the line, "And Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon. God help me, he was going home in June" means that Frankie was still 11 months from going home.

    The Giving Tree Lyrics

All the leaves on The Giving Tree have fallen
No shade to crawl in underneath
I got scars from a pocket knife
Where you carved your heart into me

If all you wanted was love
Why would you use me up
Cut me down, build a boat, and sail away
When all I wanted to be was your giving tree
Settle down, build a home, and make you happy?

I lie in the dead of night and I wonder
    Whose covers you're between
And it's sad laying in his bed
You feel hollow, so you crawl home back to me

If all you wanted was love
Why would you use me up
Cut me down, build a boat, and sail away
When all I wanted to be was your giving tree
Settle down, build a home, and make you happy?

Well, I see a trail that starts
A line of broken hearts behind you
That lead you back to me
The once sad and lonely fool
With nothing left but roots to show, oh

If all you wanted was love
Why would you use me up
Cut me down, build a boat, and sail away
When all I wanted to be was your giving tree

    The Giving Tree
  • This acoustic ballad was written and sung by guitarist Tim Lopez. The song describes a dysfunctional give-and-take relationship and references Shel Silverstein's children's book of the same title, which Lopez recalls being read to him as a kid.
  • Frontman Tom Higgenson commented to Radio.com of the tune's bare production: "A song like 'The Giving Tree' that Tim wrote, it just felt so good with his finger-picking thing. It felt like that's the way the song should stay."

"Sometimes adding to a song like that just takes away. What you really want to do is suck the listener in to only hear the story and the vocal," Lopez added. "So, you keep piling stuff on it and it starts to deteriorate the song. Tracks like that you leave small."

We walk the streets at night
    We go Where Eagles Dare
    They pick up every movement

    With jaded eyes and features

I ain't no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby, babe

I ain't no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby
I ain't no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby, babe

Let's test your threshold of pain
Let's see how long you last
    That's happened in your rape
    On bosoms of your past

    With jaded eyes and features
    You think they really care
    Let's go where eagles dare
    We'll go where eagles dare

    Remedy
  • In our interview with Black Crowes lyricist/frontman Chris Robinson , he explained: "'Remedy' is a song that essentially is about freedom. We were into the whole idea that the 'war on drugs' was just silly - it was this asinine concept to me and millions of other people. So that song to me is about freedom, plain and simple, just put in a Rock & Roll framework."
  • A track from the second Black Crowes album, this was their last song to make the Hot 100 - a surprising development considering they charted three songs from their first album and had a lot of radio support. As the band moved forward, the focused more on their core fanbase (the "connoisseurs" as Chris Robinson calls them), which circumscribed their popular fortunes.
  • The pro-marijuana stance the band espouses in this song is something they played up around this time. To help promote the album, they appeared on the cover of High Times magazine, played the Atlanta Pot Festival, and had signage at their concerts with marijuana leaves.

He Didn't Have to Be Lyrics

When a single mom goes out on a date with somebody new
It always winds up feeling more like a job interview
My mama used to wonder if she'd ever meet someone
Who wouldn't find out about me and then turn around and run

I met the man I call my dad when I was five years old
He took my mom out to a movie and for once I got to go
A few months later I remember lying there in bed
I overheard him pop the question and I prayed that she'd say yes

And then all of a sudden
Ah it seemed so strange to me
How we went from something's missing
    To a family
Lookin' back all I can say
About all the things he did for me
Is I hope I'm at least half the dad
That He Didn't Have to Be

I met the girl who's now my wife about three years ago
We had the perfect marriage but we wanted somethin' more
Now here I stand surrounded by our family and friends
Crowded 'round the nursery window as they bring the baby in

And then all of a sudden
Ah it seemed so strange to me
How we went from something's missing
    To a family
Lookin' through the glass I think about the man
    That's standing next to me
And I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be

I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be

    He Didn't Have to Be
  • The second single from Brad Paisley's debut album, Who Needs Pictures, this became his first Country #1 in December 1999, holding the top spot for one week.
  • The song was penned by Paisley with his frequent co-writer and best friend Kelley Lovelace and based on the latter's relationship with his stepson McCain Merren. "'He Didn't Have to Be' was probably the most life-changing three minutes that I've ever written, because I really believe we wouldn't be sitting here anymore talking," Paisley said. "Maybe we'd be sitting here with me having written a #1 song for somebody else, but I don't think I'd still have a record deal without that song. It broke the ice for me with radio. It was like you could see potential in it, and that's an important thing. I was really lucky, it wasn't like we knew what we were doing. I just happened [to write] that with my best friend from the bottom of my heart about his situation."
  • This was written from the perspective of a son of a single mother; we hear how the single mom begins dating a new man who immediately builds a relationship with the child as well. Lovelace co-penned it from personal experience having become a step-dad to McCain Merren when he married his wife, Karen. According to an interview with the songwriter in USA Weekend magazine, Paisley said to him, "Let's make a song about you two that will make your wife cry."
  • Top session drummer Eddie Bayers played on this. The winner of the Academy of Country Music's Drummer of the Year Award for eight straight years, Bayers has played on songs by the likes of John Denver, George Straitt, The Beach Boys, Garth Brooks, Glen Campbell, Kenny Chesney and Elton John.
  • The song was later included on Paisley's 2009 album, Playlist: The Very Best of Brad Paisley, as well as on his 2010 Hits Alive record.
