Water And A Flame Lyrics

Seven days has gone so fast,
I really thought the pain would pass.
It's been nearly an hour,
Since I thought of you.

But you're not answering the phone,
I'd settle for a busy tone,
At least by that I'd know that you're okay.
A guy like you ain't meant to go away, no no

Now you're gone,
There's nothing else I want.
Now that it's over,
There's nothing else I want.
What have I done,
Looks like I was wrong.
Is everything really meant to change,
I guess we're like Water And A Flame.
Water and a flame.

I'm tired of this empty house,
I need a drink to get me out.
A couple more til I forget your name.

I saw a guy that looked like you,
I did not know quite what to do,
It took a power of will to break my stare.
I realized what I wanted wasn't there.

Now you're gone,
There's nothing else I want.
Now that it's over,
There's nothing else I want.

What have I done,
Looks like I was wrong.
Is everything really meant to change,
I guess we're like water and a flame.
Water and a flame

And if you see me coming.
Look away, look away.
And if your mind is made up.
Look away, look away.

And if your worry about me
I'm okay, I'm okay, yes I am

Now you're gone,
There's nothing else I want.
Now that it's over,
There's nothing else I want.
What have I done,
Looks like I was wrong.
Is everything really meant to change,
I guess we're like water and a flame.
Water and a flame.

Water And A Flame
  • Celine Dion covered this Daniel Merriweather and Adele duet for her Loved Me Back To Life album, turning it into her own restrained gin-soaked breakup ballad. "Instead of trying to make it pure and perfect, I get to loosen up a little," she told Katie Couric of the song on her daytime talk show.
  • Dion sings this with the lower, grainier register of her voice. She told Billboard magazine: "A few years ago, I would have pronounced it 'a couple of more,' would have sung [stretches out the notes] 'til I forget your naaaame.' So for me, it's very, very different. I'm using my bedroom hair, bedroom voice."
  • Merriweather harshly criticized Dion for recording his tune, writing, "This song has every ounce of my heartache and pain in it and she pretends as if she wrote it herself."

The Canadian singer's management responded on her website, saying that, Dion, "has been very vocal about the fact that she does not write her own songs," adding that she would never "want to do any harm to the writers."

    Hey Deanie Lyrics

    [Chorus]
Hey Deanie, won't you come out tonight
The stars are dancing like diamonds in the moonlight
And we can never find a better time to fall in love
Oh, hey, Deanie won't you come out tonight
The summer's waitin', the moon is shinin' so bright
Hey, Deanie, you're the one I'm dreamin' of

I was a fool for your love from the moment I saw you
Like a vision in the darkness of a thousand lost and lonely nights
But my heart threw away the key
I was blind as a man could be
Oh baby can't you help me see the light

I stand accused I'm in league with the forces of darkness
An incurable believer in the magic of the midnight sky
And the love that I found today
Oh I can't let it slip away
Oh darlin' can't you read between the lines

    [Chorus]

Deanie, love is all there is
I don't want to lose it
I don't want to let this feelin' go
If it's here within our reach
I think we should use it
Now while we got the love
    Still let it show oh

    Hey, Deanie, won't you come out tonight;
The stars a dancin' like diamonds in the moonlight
And we can never find a better time to fall in love
Hey, Deanie, won't you come out tonight
The summer's waitin' the moon is shinin' so bright
Hey, Deanie, you're the one I'm dreamin' of
Hey, Deanie, you're the one I'm dreamin' of
    Won't you come out tonight
You're the one that I'm dreamin' of
I'm a fool for your lovin'
Won't you come out, come out tonight

  • This, feel-good, bubblegum hit about teenage love was the second song Eric Carmen wrote for Cassidy, with "That's Rock and Roll" having been a hit for Cassidy in 1977. Carmen also recorded both songs, and the following year this was included on his third solo LP, Change of Heart. Arista Records released Carmen's version on 45 as the B-side of the title track.

    Unfinished Songs Lyrics

    So you're thinking it's ending
    But it's only just begun
Your whole life is there right
    Right in front of you
Life's a story that is all twisted and turned
All that matters is the lessons we learn

    'Cause we're all Unfinished Songs
Waiting for the best part to come along
    Hey hey
    Hey hey
And we're all pictures that's drawn
We can be anything we want
    Hey hey
    Hey hey

    Now is your time
    It's your life
No one's living it but you
In your hands is your chance to live the life you choose

    Life's like music
    There's so much still unsung
    Make it magic
There's so much still to come

    'Cause we're all unfinished songs
Waiting for the best part to come along
    Hey hey
    Hey hey
And we're all pictures that's drawn
We can be anything we want
    Hey hey
    Hey hey

You can write a song and write the story
Living all of this life in all its glory
Take the time to make the time to make each moment count
    It's your life
    It's your call
    Grab the chance
    Have it all

    'Cause we're all unfinished songs
Waiting for (waiting for) the best part to come along
    Hey hey
    Hey hey
And we're all pictures that's drawn
We can be anything we want
    Hey hey

    Unfinished Songs
  • This Diane Warren penned song accompanied the British-German film Song for Marion. However, when the soundtrack for the movie was released in February 2013, it wasn't included as it was being saved for Dion's Loved Me Back To Life album.
  • Warren has been working with Dion since the early 1990s and has written over a dozen singles for her, including "Because You Loved Me" and "If You Asked Me To." The songwriter played Dion an early version of the song after one of the singer's Vegas shows in 2011, with the intention of recording it that week during the Canadian's time off. Despite her busy schedule, Dion remained committed to nailing the perfect take in the studio. "Here's what's so impressive about working with Celine, what separates the good from the great," Warren told Billboard magazine. "I went to her show, and it's almost two hours. She's not lip-synching. She's singing songs that aren't easy to sing. Then we went in the studio at 11:30 at night and she stayed until, like, 4 a.m. and would not leave until it was perfect. I kept thinking, 'That's why she's going to be around forever.' A lot of times you work with singers and they're like, 'Aw, I'll finish next time.' She just came from two hours onstage and then really sang her ass off. Not that she needed to - she got it right the first time. There's too few people like that."

    Stupid Girl Lyrics

I'm not talking about the kind of clothes she wears
    Look at that Stupid Girl
I'm not talking about the way she combs her hair
    Look at that stupid girl

The way she powders her nose
Her vanity shows and it shows
She's the worst thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

I'm not talking about the way she digs for gold
    Look at that stupid girl
Well, I'm talking about the way she grabs and holds
    Look at that stupid girl

The way she talks about someone else
That she don't even know herself
She's the sickest thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

    Well, I'm sick and tired
And I really have my doubts
    I've tried and tried
But it never really works out

Like a lady in waiting to a virgin queen
    Look at that stupid girl
She bitches 'bout things that she's never seen
    Look at that stupid girl

It doesn't matter if she dyes her hair
Or the color of the shoes she wears
She's the worst thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

    Shut-up, shut-up, shut-up, shut-up, shut-up
    Shut-up, shut-up, shut-up, shut-up, shut-up
    Shut-up, shut-up, shut-up

Like a lady in waiting to a virgin queen
    Look at that stupid girl
She bitches 'bout things that she's never seen
    Look at that stupid girl

    She purrs like a pussycat
Then she turns 'round and hisses back
She's the sickest thing in this world
    Look at that stupid girl

  • Keith Richards (1971): "Songs like "Under My Thumb" and "Stupid Girl" were all a spin-off from our environment - hotels, and too many dumb chicks. Not all dumb, not by any means, but that's how one got."
  • Mick Jagger (1995): "It's much nastier than Under My Thumb. Obviously, I was having a bit of trouble. I wasn't in a good relationship. Or I was in too many bad relationships. I had so many girlfriends at that point. None of them seemed to care they weren't pleasing me very much. I was obviously in with the wrong group"

Little wendy cocaine stumbles up the hill to pain
Nothing stops the go-to girl, nothing takes the place of taking aim
Little wendy's out there shaking hips and cuckoo eyes
    Crazy drives that dizzy crowd
Moonlight strokes the highlights in her hair
She sells and moves and finds my hand
And pulls me down and close so I can hardly stand
As I lay like dead for her, I'm fed into my head I'm led, oh, I am sam
I'm crawling from the window, crawling down the wall
I'm happy screaming, yes, I am
I'm jumping on her daisy chain
I'm speeding through the dancehall Like a Rocket Man
Now I wish today that yesterday was just tomorrow and
I could squeeze her grabby hand
Knowing that I never paid her for a gram
She's a drunken doxy off her trolly
Sent before her time into this poxy world
She's not fit for anything but dealing it
While heaven sings, I have this girl
She's got me eating rice and beans
I have no shape nor color, I'm god's lonely man
I don't want to die but I don't want to live

    Devil's Island Lyrics

The light that fill my lonely cell,
Is blocked out by the key,
That locks the door to this hell,
    The place they wanted me.
    Time's racing like the wind,
    Execution's near.
Oh Lord, I wait for death,
And yes, I have no fear.
I recall that night, my every breath,
    And step along the way.
    Closed my eyes, walking,
    As danger paved the way.
    The devil and the darkness
    Let her evil wander free.
    And here on Devil's Island,
    The final stop for me.
    Devil's Island! Devil's Island!
    Oh there's no escape,
The sea is full of sharks.
    The tides take you way
And smash you on the rocks.
    The sun is shining,
    But feel not today,
    Its warmth, it's dying,
    And fading away.
    Devil's Island! Devil's Island!
    Oh hear the call,
    From the grave beyond
    Oh so pernicious,
Her soul could, it creates song.
As there is no man that is
    Here upon the earth,
    Able to terminate our
    Noisome will since birth.
The priest that reads the sermons,
    Is walking next to me,
To the stake, my last request,
To have her burn with me.
But so it did, the heavens opened,
    Rain began to fall.
    The final judgment came.
And was spread before you all.
    Final Judgment!
    Old, weak, and feeble,
But the lesson taught to me,
    To stay away from evil,
    She doesn't care for me.
She haunts me in my sleep,
Though I tore that page away.
    And here on Devil's Island,
    I'll always have to stay.

    Devil's Island
  • Devil's Island was a penal colony in French Guiana active from 1852-1946. Even by island prison standards, it was notoriously brutal, and most inmates died there (the book Papillon, made into a movie in 1973, is written by Henri Charrière, who escaped from the island and told his story).

Dave Mustaine of Megadeth wrote this song from the perspective of a prisoner on the island, hopeless and confronting his inevitable death there.

Jacqui loves her work, and her work is love
    For there is no other
She says "god has given me a job"
    Jacqui loves her work
    There is no other
Jacqui's aiming for the stars but landed on the clouds
    There is no other
Sitting in her corner too afraid to run away
    Like a slave without chains

The wonder turns to danger, spring turns to winter
    God Bless the Girl
But I will treasure, treasure every single moment
    God bless the girl
Fire turns to water, light becomes darkness
    God bless the girl
And I don't wanna hurt you, just wanna have some fun
    God bless the girl
    God bless the girl
Yeah, I don't wanna hurt you, just wanna have some fun
    God bless the girl

You don't need another friend, you just need a reason
    There is no other
Jacqui loves her work, and her work is love

    Old Admirals Lyrics

I can well recall the first time I ever put to sea
It was on the old 'Calcutta' in 1853
I was just a lad of fourteen years, a midshipman to be
To make my way in sailing ships of the Royal Navy

By the time that I was twenty-one I'd sailed the world around
Weathered storms in the China seas with the hatches battened down
And made my way by starlight off the coast of Newfoundland
And dined on beer and herrings while the waves blew all around

    I live in retirement now
And through my window comes the sound of seagulls
    And sets my mind remembering
The evening stars like memories sail far beyond the distant trees
Way out across the open seas
    I hear them sing

Oh the wooden ships they turned to iron and the iron ships to steel
And shed their sails like autumn leaves with the turning of the wheel
And I was given captain's rank and soon took under me
The proudest ship that ever sailed for queen and country

Ah, the old queen she passed away with the new born century
And I received my calling up to the admiralty
The sands ran through the hourglass each day more rapidly
As we watched the growing of the fleets of high Germany

So at last the Great War blazed
I waited with the passing days
The call to arms that never came
    Writing letters

I may be old now in your eyes
But all my years have made me wise
You don't see where the danger lies
Oh call me back, call me back

But the war it ran its course, they could find no use for me
And I live in the country now, grandchildren on my knee
And sometimes think in all this world the saddest thing to be
Old Admirals who feel the wind, and never put to sea

Now just like you I've sailed my dreams like ships across the sea
And some of them they've come on rocks, and some faced mutiny
And when they're sunken one by one I'll join that company
Old admirals who feel the wind, and never put to sea

    Old Admirals
  • Stewart wrote this after reading a biography of Admiral Lord Fisher, who resigned as First Sea Lord in 1915 after a dispute with Winston Churchill.
  • Fisher (1841-1920) is regarded by some as second only to Lord Nelson in British naval history. He was born in what was then Ceylon, the son of a British Army officer, enlisted in the Royal Navy aged just thirteen and rose to the position of First Sea Lord, retiring on his 70th birthday. Fisher was recalled after Prince Louis Battenberg (another of Stewart's heroes) was forced to resign at the outbreak of war in Europe on account of his German ancestry. Both these men appear in "Manuscript," the song which can be said to have started historical folk-rock.
  • The album version of "Old Admirals" runs to 5 minutes 54 seconds; it is also included on the 1996 unofficial fan club release Oceans Of Delphi, in which Stewart tells his audience this was the most uncommercial song possible being about the rise of British sea power immediately prior to the First World War. Fisher, he added, was utterly devoted to the British Empire, and was cast aside and forgotten at the end of his life; the song was an extended metaphor for growing old and unwanted.
Although the first part of this statement is undoubtedly true, Fisher was anything but forgotten in old age. He resigned in May 1915 after a dispute with Churchill, but soon found another post, and on his death he was given an illustrious funeral at Westminster Abbey.
Stewart said on this live recording that "Old Admirals" was probably his personal favorite of the songs he had ever written (up until that time), but he has said the same thing about "Manuscript," the first song he wrote in this new genré, and which bears an even stronger metaphor.

    A--hole
  • This vitriol-filled attack on haters features Skylar Grey on the hook. Grey (birth name Holly Brook Hafermann) formerly performed as simply Holly Brook and was featured under that name on Fort Minor's hit single "Where'd You Go." After her success with that song, she maintained a low profile in the industry until gaining widespread fame as the songwriter who created the chorus for Eminem's international hit "Love The Way You Lie." Grey also appeared on Dr. Dre's "I Need a Doctor" and Diddy-Dirty Money's "Coming Home," as well as releasing her debut solo album, which was executive produced by Slim Shady.
  • The beat was supplied by Alex Da Kid, the guy who produced "Love The Way You Lie." It was one of three tracks he helmed that finished up on The Marshall Mathers LP 2, the other two being the Deluxe Edition bonus tracks, "Wicked Ways" and "Desperation." The British producer explained to Artist Direct how he worked with Eminem on the record. "When Marshall first started to work on MMLP2, we discussed his vision for the album and where he wanted to go creatively," he said. "Then I went to work making beats and hooks that I thought would align with this vision and take it to the next level. Every few months or so, we would reconvene and he would pick the tracks he liked and write to them. Sometimes we would redefine the initial idea, but most of the time it stayed pretty true to the demo."

    Here In Your Bedroom,
I can turn my head off

    I wonder what you think
As we lay here in bed
    I don't know what I'm thinking,

    When I wake up tomorrow
Will you still feel the same?
    When I wake up tomorrow
    Will you have changed?

    [Chorus]

'cause I still feel the same
'cause I still feel the same
I, I still feel the same

    Here in your bedroom

    [Chorus]

    Here we go!

    Here in your bedroom,
I feel safe from the outside.
I can tell that you're changing,
But still I feel so high.

    I wonder what you think.
    Sometimes I feel so old.
    I don't know if it's worth it
When I just do what I'm told.

    When I wake up tomorrow,
Will you still feel the same?
    When I wake up tomorrow,
    Will you have changed?

It marked their departure from an underground Punkish band into Pop/Punk semi-stardom (they were still relatively unknown). The song still remains one of the most popular songs in their live lineups even after over a decade of playing it.
