Sam Phillips was "taking a swing at celebrity culture" with this song, trying to get people to connect with something other than their television sets. She explained in an interview with Patheos.com:

"I think one of the things that I've felt strongly about is not to preach, but to inspire and offer an alternative instead—to say: 'There's something else. Look over here, you might find something else.' Because our culture is so success- and money-oriented, and the music business is, too. I think we all know this in a sense, but we're still on the hamster wheel even though money doesn't guarantee abundance or happiness or joy.

I think art reminds us of this. Being inspired by and lost in a song, painting, poem, story, or performance can be one of the richest experiences in life. It's such a release from all the push for us to buy things and to be what we're not."

The Push Any Button album, inspired by the '50s and '60s era of Pop music, was nearly named after this song until the tragic Boston Marathon bombings of April 15, 2013 prompted Phillips to change her mind. She told Examiner.com about the inspiration behind the current album title: "I was trying to connect it to the 20th Century - when you think about it, there aren't many mechanical buttons to 'push' anymore, as we're living in the electronic age. I feel like these songs were pulled from the jukebox in my mind."

Innuendo

Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor wrote the lyrics to this song as a tribute to Led Zeppelin. When Robert Plant joined the three surviving members of Queen at Freddie Mercury's memorial concert at Wembley Stadium, they played a full version of this song, which included parts of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and "Thank You."

The music was started off by Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon jamming in the studio in Montreux. From then on Freddie Mercury composed the song and added the long interlude. The melody is Mercury's as well. Lyrics were started off by Mercury but completed by drummer Roger Taylor.

The orchestra in the middle part was completely done with synthesizers; by Freddie Mercury and the producer David Richards.

Yes guitarist Steve Howe played the Spanish guitar solo in the middle because, admittedly, Brian May couldn't do it. Steve dropped by in the studio to say hi to producer David Richards, then Freddie invited him to join them on the track.

This was Queen's third #1 in the UK after "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Under Pressure."

Chris Daughtry performed this song on the fifth season of American Idol. Simon Cowell called his performance "indulgent" and asked why he didn't sing one of the great Queen songs instead.

In this song, Sam Phillips tries to tell her lover how she feels in a roundabout way: "If I said I could leave you now and go where I could forget, I'd be lying." In our interview with Phillips , she talked about the nuts and bolts of the song: "There were some philosophies going around and some self help that I didn't agree with, so I put that in a song. It was a hodgepodge of that, but more of what the Tin Pan Alley writers call the classic laundry list song: you put a lot of different things in a list. That was an unusual way to say it: 'I'd be lying if I said this, this, this, this, this, and this.' So I guess that would be the craft part of it, the 'behind the machine' part of it."

Tin Pan Alley refers to the influential music publishers and songwriters based in large cities - usually New York - in the mid-19th to 20th centuries.

Elvis Costello was a guest performer - as guitarist - on the Cruel Inventions album.

Phillips re-recorded this song for her digitally released Long Play series. She told the Pop Matters website: "I was never really happy with my performance of it on Cruel Inventions, I thought my vocal was too strident. I wanted a softer approach, vocally, so I thought a stripped down version would be interesting, and I was really happy with how it turned out."

Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the inspiration for this song, was an influential guitarist and singer of the '30s and '40s who turned the Gospel genre on its head with her infusion of Blues and Jazz with traditional spiritual music. Some of her notable hits were "This Train," "Down By the Riverside" and "Strange Things Happening Every Day." The latter influenced the lyrics of Sam Phillips' song, as she explained in her Songfacts interview:

"'Up above my head, I hear music in the air, there's strange things happening every day.' I was using her to talk about the things that we can't see that happen all around us - the inspiration, the good things that happen to us all the time, and where do those things come from? I think through music and art is how we get to ecstatic experiences. There are other ways, too, but I think for us the familiar ways are through music and art."

Although Phillips penned the song, it was recorded by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss for their Raising Sand album in 2007, a year before Phillips' own version was released (the Plant/Krauss collaboration also won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year). As Phillips tells it, she had a conversation with Plant where he told her that Sister Rosetta Tharpe once asked him - in his pre-Zeppelin days - to join her on tour.

This is the opening track of Amos Lee's Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song album. The folksy singer-songwriter approached the record differently to his previous releases, working with Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Little Big Town, Cage the Elephant), and his road band at the producer's Nashville studio. "We started with "Johnson Blvd.' It was the first song we cut," Lee told The Boot . "It was a tune that I felt was real necessary for the album, 'cause I like the way it's written, I like the way we approach it as a band."

The song is a prime example of Joyce's influence on Mountains Of Sorrow. "It came out beautiful. I mean, I'm really happy with it," said Lee. "It's one of the better teamwork effort things between me, the band and Jay, because everybody played their parts really beautifully, and then he went in afterwards, he and Jason went in and really sculpted things and made movements out of the parts that weren't as poignant."

Lee told Billboard magazine that he thought back to his youth and a bygone era when he penned the song. "As someone who gets a chance to travel all the time, you get to see stuff and how quickly things evolve," he said. "As a writer, I like to take on other people's minds for a while. I was thinking about how my dad used to work around Brownsville, Texas, and I started to think about what progress is and how people define progress today."

"The beginning of the song outlines the moment that where someone who has always felt comfortable in their skin realizes things are about to change forever, and the bulldozers are on the way," continued Lee. "Somehow, it's always been that way. It's never been any different. It's just a plight of humanity. It's hard to hold fast to the things you love, because tomorrow comes anyway."

Dragon Attack

Most of the track evolved from a jam session the band had at the studio while they were bladdered. That's how the basic loop of bass and drums came out. Brian May then added lyrics and melody, the latter being surprisingly similar to "We Will Rock You" (compare "Buddy you're a boy make a big noise playing in the street" with "Take me to the room where the red's all red take me").

It came as quite the musical surprise in the running order on the album - both that the rock-orientated May wrote it (as opposed to the more funk/disco leaning Deacon and Mercury) and after the very traditionally Queen "Play The Game." However, it does work on easing the listener in to "Another One Bites The Dust".

"Dragon Attack" is one of several songs on The Game which best demonstrates Queen's experimentation with more minimal recording techniques during this period. They had a new producer, Mack, and were working in high-tech studios in Munich, away from their regular producer Roy Thomas Barker (with whom they had developed their hugely complex sound) for the first time.

Brian May spoke about this new approach: "Yeah, that was when we started trying to get outside what was normal for us. We turned our whole studio technique around in a sense, because Mack had come from a different background from us. We thought there was only one way of doing things, like doing a backing tracks: We would just do it until we got it right. If there were some bits where it speeded up or slowed down, then we would do it again until it was right. We had done some of our old backing tracks so many times, they were too stiff. Mack's first contribution was to say, 'Well you don't have to do that. I can drop the whole thing in. If it breaks down after half a minute, then we can edit in and carry on if you just play along with the tempo.' We laughed and said 'Don't be silly. You can't do that.' But in fact, you can. What you gain is the freshness, because often a lot of the backing tracks is first time though. It really helped a lot. There was less guitar on that album, but that's really not going to be the same forever; that was just an experiment."

This is the opening track of British singer-songwriter Anna Calvi's second album, One Breath. She explained to NME: "It's about a depression that you don't really know how to overcome, but you know that you don't want to feel it any more, so you just walk away from it. Is it autobiographical? Yes. This record is more about things that are going on in my life."

Much of One Breath was inspired by the depression that dogged Calvi throughout its recording. "I don't think I have any control over my emotions," she told NME of her turmoil. "It's a problem in my life, but in my music it's great. I think the feeling of not being on stable ground is what makes art interesting."

In a later interview with The Independent, Calvi stated that her emotional ups and downs do not signify an album about depression. "It's much more about the feeling of hope that things will get better," she explained, "that there's limitless potential to every moment because the future isn't already written."

Love Bites

The J. Geils band told us in 1980 that "Love Stinks," but Def Leppard reminds us that it also bites.

In this song, Joe Elliott has a lot of questions:

When you make love, do you look in the mirror?
Who do you think of, does he look like me?

It sounds like his girlfriend has taken up with another guy, but then it becomes clear that Joe is still in the picture:

When I'm with you are you somewhere else?
Am I gettin' thru or do you please yourself?

Ah, seems she's a bit disconnected when it comes to intimacy, and if there is another guy, he's part of her fantasy. Joe has the opposite problem:

I don't wanna touch you too much baby
'Cos making love to you might drive me crazy

So she needs additional mental stimulation, and he can't handle too much of her touch. Love bites indeed.

The title could have a double meaning if you believe that there is some biting going on during this lovemaking. As it says in the song, love also bleeds.

This was the fifth single released from the Hysteria album in the US. The album came out in August 1987, and the first single, "Women," stalled at #80 in September. "Animal" made #19 in December, the title track reached #10 in March 1988, and "Pour Some Sugar On Me" got Leppard fans through the summer, peaking at #2 in July. You might think listeners would be fatigued at this point, but clearly there was still an appetite, as "Love Bites" reached #1 in October 1988, giving the group their only chart-topper.

Remarkably, they squeezed two more singles out of the album: "Armageddon It" (#3, January 1989) and "Rocket" (#12, April 1989).

A popular rumor about the song concerns the final seconds. After the line, "If you got love in your sights, Watch out, Love Bites," what is seemingly heard is "Jesus of Nazareth, Go to Hell." This rumor has been refuted by the band, most notably on a Hysteria documentary. The line is in fact producer Mutt Lange rambling in a Yorkshire accent, to the effect of "Yes it does, Bloody Hell," with the aid of a vocoder.

In our interview with Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen , he said of this song, "It was just a standard rock ballad but it had something else going for it. Lyrically, it kind of painted a picture, and in a song you always want to do that, paint a picture. 'On a dark desert highway,' the first line of 'Hotel California,' great song, it just paints an image for you straight off the bat and that's the sign of a really good song. It takes you right there. 'Love Bites' did that as well."

The video was directed by Jean Pellerin, who also did the clips for "Women" and "Hysteria." Def Leppard's success on MTV helped them break out in America even while they were slagged off in their native England. How did the band feel about the network? Lead singer Joe Elliot talked about how he got along with MTV VJs in MTV Ruled the World - The Early Years of Music Video: "JJ reminded me of Harry Belafonte! He was such a great guy to do interviews with. I was in and out all the summer of '83 with voice problems, canceling gigs and rescheduling them and coming on and telling everybody I'm alive and kicking and everything's fine. Martha Quinn - I remember our manager Cliff Bernstein had a crush on her big time."

Mutt Lange, who got writing credits on all the Hysteria tracks along with the band members, wrote the first version of this song, which he played on an acoustic guitar for guitarists Phil Cullen and Steve Clark. Cullen remembers Lange's acoustic rendition sounding like an Eagles song, as Lange sings like Don Henley. In the final mix, the backing vocals are almost all Lange.

"Love Bites" was originally slated as the title for a different song, but that track was later re-titled "I Wanna Be Your Hero."

This is the only track from the Hysteria album with keyboards.

There was a girl group from Midlands, England called Love Bites. The girls, Dani Graham, Nicki Wood, and sisters Aimee and Hannah Haddon, formed at school, wrote their own songs and got a record deal without outside help. Their first single was "You Broke My Heart," which was a hit in the UK.
