Stoop So Low Lyrics

Stoop So Low
  • This is a track from Govt Mule's tenth album Shout!, which comprises two discs: one of new material and the other featuring a group of notable artists interpreting those songs. This song features Dr. John. "That was in honor of Sly & the Family Stone's Fresh, the 40th anniversary," said frontman Warren Haynes. "When I listened back to my vocal performance, it started reminding me more of Dr. John, and we were about to be on tour with Dr. John and I thought, 'Well, maybe I should ask Mac to sing the low verses or something."
  • Like most of the songs on Shout!, the guest artist version differs significantly from the Gov't Mule treatment. "In almost every case, we specifically, intentionally changed the arrangement -- sometimes before the sang the song and sometimes after they sang the song. We were consciously not wanting to offer the same arrangement twice," Haynes told Billboard magazine. "I think everybody delivered above and beyond what was expected, but that's what you would expect of these people. These are great singers that I genuinely love and respect, and so it's only appropriate that each of them would take the song somewhere that I would never think of."

    Whatsername Lyrics

Thought I ran into you down on the street
Then it turned out to only be a dream
I made a point to burn all of the photographs
She went away and then I took a different path
    I remember the face
But I can't recall the name
Now I wonder how Whatsername has been

Seems that she disappeared with out a trace
did she ever marry old what's his face
I made a point to burn all of the photographs
She went away and then I took a different path
    I remember the face
But I can't recall the name
Now I wonder how whatsername has been

    Remember, whatever
It seems like forever to go
    Remember, whatever
    It seems like forever ago
    The regrets are useless
    In my mind
    She's in my head
    I must confess
    The regrets are useless
    She's in my head
    From so long ago

    (Go, Go, Go, Go..)

    And in the darkest night
If my memory serves me right
    I'll never turn back time

Forgetting you, but not the time

    Whatsername
  • This follows the story of Jesus Of Suburbia. After being home, and just living in normality, he still regrets losing Whatsername. It's been so long, he can't even remember her name. He wonders what happened to her, and can only remember. All he has is his memories of her. The album ends with him still trying to forget "If my memory serves me right, I'll never turn back time, forgetting you, but not the time." He doesn't regret living his life on the streets, using it as a learning experience, but still tries to forget Whatsername, the pain that she put him through, and vice versa.
  • "I think that the true hero of the whole record is the Whatsername character. She's a person that never really wanes; she never really falls from grace. She's the one that kind of stuck to her beliefs and left all the bulls--t behind," Billie Joe Armstrong told VH1 Storytellers. He added: "The Whatsername character tells Jesus of Suburbia/St. Jimmy what they don't want to hear, but inevitably that's what they were going for to begin with, and that's the twist of the whole thing."

    INXS -Suicide Blonde Lyrics

Don't you know what you're doing
    You've got a death wish

    Suicide blonde
    Suicide blonde
    Suicide blonde
    Suicide blonde

Suicide blonde was the color of her hair
Like a cheap distraction for a new affair
She knew it would finish before it began
Wow baby I think you lost the plan

You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde
You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde

She stripped to the beat but her clothes stay on
White light everywhere but you can't see a thing
    Such a squeeze
    A mad sad moment
    Glory to you
    Glory to you
    Take me there
    Take me there

    Got some revelation
    Put into your hands
Save you from your misery like rain across the land
Don't you see the color of deception
    Turning your world around again

You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde
You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde

    You want to make
    You want to make
You want to make her suicide blonde
    You want to make
    Aww

    That's the story

You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde
You want to make her suicide blonde

You want to make her suicide blonde

    Suicide Blonde
  • The song title comes from a phrase describing a woman who colors her hair blonde as "dyeing" from her own hand.
  • Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of INXS who cowrote the song, would commit suicide at the Ritz Carlton hotel by hanging on November 22, 1997. His lover Paula Yates died on September 17, 2000 from a drug overdose and had attempted suicide in 1998. However, Hutchence's relationship with her started well after the song became a hit.
  • INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence wrote this song for Kylie Minogue, who was his girlfriend at the time. One of Hutchence's favorite hobbies was "Corrupting Kylie" because of her wholesome image.

When Hutchence and Minogue attended the premiere of Kylie's film The Delinquents, she wore an extreme look which made her unrecognizable to many. This included a blonde wig, which she christened "Suicide Blonde" and was the inspiration for this song.
  • A dance remix was played extensively on US top 40 radio stations.
  • This hit #1 on both the Modern and Mainstream US rock charts and reached #3 on the charts in their native country, Australia.
  • That's Charlie Musselwhite playing the harmonica. The Mississippi-born white bluesman has released over 20 albums, as well as guesting on Bonnie Raitt's Grammy-winning Longing In Their Hearts. He was reportedly the inspiration for Dan Aykroyd's character in the Blues Brothers.

    Tick-tock, I'm watching the clock
I can't wait til we get to rock
I wanna scream and dream and throw a love parade
    Is that okay?
Tonight is me and you alone
    Won't make a call, won't even write a song
See I've been waiting and waiting for the time to say
    Now listen babe

When you're down, and it's hard
And you feel like you've given your all
Baby our love will always keep it real and true

'Cause baby it's a prime time for our love
Ain't nobody peekin' but the stars above
It's a prime time for our love
And heaven is betting on us

Bang bang, I'm calling your name
You're like a fire the world can't tame
I wanna riot til the stars come out and play
    Is that okay? Okay
Tonight is me and you alone
    Won't take a call, won't even write a song
This'll be a personal private dance
    Listen baby

When you're down, and it's hard
And you feel like you've given your all
Baby my love is always right here for you
    Yeah

'Cause baby it's a prime time for our love

    PrimeTime
  • This sensual R&B ballad about two people finding themselves in the right place at the right time finds Monáe duetting with Miguel. The sci-fi Soul songstress told A.V.Club how she hooked up with the Adorn singer: "The collaboration happened through our music and energy, being out there, and both of us were fans of one another," she said. "I read in interviews that he wanted to work with me, and I loved 'Adorn' and loved what he was doing. I loved that he was writing and producing his own music, and I thought that was really cool. So when I was ready to write the love song, I thought he was a great communicator to women and to people in general, and I wanted him to be a part of my vision for 'Primetime.' I was just honored to have the opportunity to produce him and work with him and honored that he trusted my guidance throughout the song."
  • The song's music video was directed by Alan Ferguson, who previously worked with Monáe on her "Many Moons" clip. The singer plays a bar waitress called Cindi Mayweather, thereby working in the 'Electric Lady' plotline from her album. Miguel plays first love Joey Vic. Monáe explained: "The Emotion Picture gives a glimpse at Cindi's humble beginnings as a 'cyber-server' at the Electric Sheep nightclub, a syn bar serving high-class 'show droids' to the rich and lonely in a dangerous section of Metropolis known as Slop City."

She added: "Incidentally, the innovative cybersoul music played at the club directly impacted Cindi, and she began singing and performing her own innovative compositions a short time after quitting this assignment. In addition, Cindi became determined to change the public perception of what an electric lady could be, dream and aspire to after working in the dismal conditions at the club."

    In My Darkest Hour Lyrics

    In my hour of need
    Ha, you're not there
And though I reach out for you
    Wouldn't lend a hand
    Through the darkest hour
Grace did not shine on me
It feels so cold, very cold
    No one cares for me
Did you ever think I get lonely?
Did you ever think that I needed love?
Did you ever think to stop thinking
You're the only one that I'm thinking of?
You'll never know how hard I tried
To find my space and satisfy you too.
Things will be better when I'm dead and gone
    Don't try to understand
    Knowing you, I'm probably wrong
But oh, how I lived my life for you
    Still you'd turn away
Now as I die for you
My flesh still crawls as I breathe your name
All there years I thought I was wrong
Now I know it was you
Raise your head, raise your face, your eyes
Tell me who you think you are, who?
I walk, I walk alone into the promised land.
There's a better place for me
    But it's far, far away
Everlasting life for me in a perfect world
    But I gotta die first,
Please God send me on my way
Time has a way of taking time
Loneliness is not only felt by fools
Alone I call to ease the pain
Yearning to be held by you
Alone, so alone, I'm lost, consumed by the pain
The pain, the pain, the pain
    Won't you hold me again?
You just laughed, ha ha, bitch!
My whole life is work built on the past
But the time has come when all things shall pass
    The good has passed away.

    In My Darkest Hour
  • Dave Mustaine wrote most of this song in just one sitting after learning that bass player Cliff Burton had died in a tour bus accident while traveling with Metallica on their Master of Puppets tour. While he was a member of Metallica from 1981-1983, Mustaine became good friends with Burton; he fondly recalls driving to practice, listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and smoking pot with him. Mustaine says that when he heard the news, he headed straight to downtown Los Angeles, where he bought heroin. He began crying, and through the tears came up with "In My Darkest Hour."
  • Burton's death was the inspiration for this song, but the lyrics are not directly about him, as the song is about remaining true to your friends and being there in their time of need. Mustaine didn't get a lot of support from his family, and also felt betrayed by Metallica when they kicked him out of the band.

Reflecting on the song, Mustaine explained that he treasures his relationship with his fans, who have shown him the kind of support he didn't get as a kid.

The song doesn't have a happy ending, but many Megadeth fans found it very helpful in getting them through difficult times, since it can be comforting to know that others have been through it.
  • The video was directed by Penelope Spheeris, who would later direct the film Wayne's World. Spheeris used the song in her 1988 documentary The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years.

Hey girl, I know this shit might sound crazy
Before you get in bed, though, on those heels
Hey girl, now I know why you waited
Had to be sure that I was worth the thrill
Ladies come and go but you got something different
Had me so addicted from the start
And I'd never known all this loving I'd be missing
If I didn't work my way into your heart

    You give me Vertigo, vertigo

The bed, the floor, the kitchen
Don't really matter as long as I get

    Vertigo, vertigo

    I'm tucked, all bottled inside
You're a bad baby, you're making me sweat

Tell me that its cool (cool) that I'm stuck on you (you)
    Like your birthday suit (suit)
You give me vertigo, that vertigo

The way that you please me sets this room on fire
I'm burning with desire in this bed
So if I'm dreaming please don't wake me up
If all of this is happening in my head
    Waited for so long
But what you got is different
Had me so addicted from the start
Boy, I'd never known all the shit that I was missing
If I hadn't worked my way into your heart

    You give me vertigo, vertigo

The bed, the floor, the kitchen
Don't really matter as long as I get

    Vertigo, that vertigo

    I'm tucked, all bottled inside
You're a bad baby, you're making me sweat

Tell me that it's cool (cool) that I'm stuck on you (you)
    Like your birthday suit (suit)
You give me vertigo, (vertigo) that vertigo

    I'm working downtown
    You all in my head
    This love that we found
    Well never regret
    Were empty inside
I'm filling you up with our vertigo
    You waking me up
    To nothing to say
    Right here in this bed
    We stay here all day
    And my head be spinning
You do matter in with our vertigo

You give me vertigo, (vertigo) vertigo

The bed, the floor, the kitchen
Don't really matter as long as I get

    Vertigo, (vertigo) vertigo

    I'm tucked, all bottled inside

  • DeRulo wrote this song with his romantic partner Jordin Sparks. The American Idol alumni also features on the track. Speaking with Radio.com , DeRulo said it took a while for him and Sparks to merge their work styles. "It was a lot of fun actually," he said. "In the beginning when we started to work together it wasn't as fun, it wasn't as easy. We had to try to find each other's palette and we finally found it. 'Vertigo' is one of the products of the happier studio sessions. It's very stripped down and piano based so you can hear every emotion. You can almost see the story in your head."
  • Derulo (from OK magazine): "With Vertigo, Jordin and I recorded about six songs because I wanted to make sure I had the right song for the album. When I wrote Vertigo I knew it was it. It's just us and the piano so the emotion really comes to life."

I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I'm leaning on the everlasting arms

If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

    I Believe I Can Fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day (Night and day)

See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me, ho oh

    I Believe I Can Fly
  • Kelly wrote this for Space Jam, which was a kid's movie starring Michael Jordan in a world of cartoons (including Bugs Bunny). The song was much more popular than the movie and became an inspirational anthem often played at weddings and used in video tributes.
  • Kelly got an early copy of the movie to view for inspiration. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Kelly said: "I studied it and I prayed over it because I wanted the best thing to come out of it."
  • This won 1997 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television.
  • Kelly may claim that he believes he can fly in this song, but in reality the R&B superstar has a chronic fear of air travel. Kelly is so scared of planes that he even takes boats when he tours Europe.
  • Speaking to The Boombox , Kelly revealed his creative process for this song: "When I met Michael Jordan on a basketball court at an athletic club - we hooped together in Chicago - he came to me and asked me if I wanted to do a song for his upcoming movie. I was like, 'Yeah!' I didn't even ask what it was. [Eventually] he let me know what it was, we went to a screening to watch it and that's when I ended up coming up with 'I Believe I Can Fly.' I knew from the first melody that was gonna be the song that was gonna take me out of R&B and into another genre of music."

Kelly added that the Notorious B.I.G. came around while he was writing the song and immediately saw its hit potential. "I was in a hotel in a deep sleep, so I kinda dreamt that melody," he recalled. "I went down to the lobby and had the security unlock the piano because it was locked. I started messing around with three-finger chords to give myself a guide with the melody. And I started hearing… [hums the melody of 'I Believe I Can Fly']. I had a lot of 'duh duh duhs' before I actually wrote what it is. But after spending two hours at that piano, watching a whole 'lotta women and men coming in back and forth, I was over in that corner on that piano. By the time Biggie came in [the hotel] it was like two hours later, I had [begins singing] 'I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky, I think about it every night and day, spread my wings and fly away' - I had about that much. He was like, 'Oh, B, that's a big hit, son.' And it ended up being exactly that."
  • Kelly co-directed the music video with Hype Williams. For most of the clip, Kelly sings in a cornfield but he eventually meets a choir in an auditorium. Scenes from Space Jam are also shown on a screen in the background.

That's How I Know You Love Me Lyrics

I remember back when I'd go places
A desperate wind wouldn't even blow,
I ran with the outskirt crowd loud
And proud, burnin' up the road.
    Pourin' whiskey on the fire
Spinnin' tires and never hit the brakes.
'Cause that just means you're weak

    But you,
You never tried to change me
You just tried to save me
And you, you found a way to trust me
Despite the broken pieces of me,
That's How I Know You Love Me
That's how I know you love me

Every man tries to stand tall
Never fall or let love knock him down
    Run on through the night
Shootin' out the lights on the heartless
    Side of town
Tonight here in the dark I'll hold ya
In my arms and never let you go.
While you kiss away the ghosts

Yeah you, you never tried to change me
You just tried to save me
And you, you found a way to trust me
Despite the broken pieces of me,
That's how I know you love me
That's how I know you love me

Yeah, you never tried to break me
You just found a way to wake me
And you, you found a way to trust me
Despite the broken pieces of me
That's how I know you love me

  • Moore considers this soulful Justin Weaver, Rodney Clawson and Chris Tompkins penned love song to be the most honest tune he has cut to date. He told Radio.com that though he didn't write it, to him, "it's one of the most truthful, straight-to-the-point songs about me and my wife's relationship that I've ever heard. So I think that shows a bit of both."

Moore added that it is not only "probably my favorite song off the album," but "probably my favorite song I've ever recorded."
  • Moore admitted to CMA Close Up that he originally had concerns about recording this tune, but he was ultimately thrilled with the results. "I loved the song from the very beginning and I knew I had to cut it, but I was nervous about how I was going to sound," he said. "It has almost this Springsteen/Prince vibe. Those were just the things I felt we needed to do to continue growing this thing."

    Teardrop
  • Massive Attack uses a variety of vocalists. On this one it was Elizabeth Fraser, whose lyrics were inspired by the death of her one-time close friend, singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. The news that Buckley had drowned whilst swimming came while Fraser was recording this song. "That was so weird," she recalled to The Guardian in 2009. "I'd got letters out and I was thinking about him. That song's kind of about him - that's how it feels to me anyway."

Fraser sang for The Cocteau Twins, worked on three tracks of Massive Attack's Mezzanine album and contributed to the soundtrack of Lord of the Rings - Fellowship Of The King.
  • Part of this is used in the theme music for the Fox TV show House MD. Massive Attack's Robert "3D" Del Naja told The Guardian February 6, 2010 that the band cut themselves out of a fortune with the licensing of this song to the show. He explained: "We got an email from Bryan Singer saying the entire concept of House was based on 'Teardrop.' We were flattered. We let him have it."

Singer, who was an executive producer on the show, was adamant about using the song because its music video, featuring an animatronic fetus singing from inside a womb, inspired the show's special effects. He explained to Ain't It Cool News :

"What I brought to the show was the idea of making that effect less CGI and using a more practical stuff, taking from the famous 'Teardrop' video by Massive Attack, building bladders and organ models and shooting them in water tanks to create a more viscerally real portrayal of the human body. I defined that element."
  • This won the 1998 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Video. The song's music video featured a plastic fetus in the womb, lip-synching the song. 3D told The Guardian: "We kept the Teardrop baby but being made of old latex, it just doesn't have the longevity. It's now just a primitive animatronic half-creature in a puddle of rotten latex. It's still quite scary: it's like a museum piece, but for all the wrong reasons."
  • Part of this song was used in Season 1 of the TV program Prison Break.
  • In 2007 the British singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner released a cover of this as a download only single, peaking at #60 in the UK singles charts.

    Two Step Lyrics

I'm gonna wear what I want to cause I want to
    I don't need no man
I'm gonna drink what I want to cause I want to
    Just because I can
I'm gonna spend my money cause it's mine
    Shot of SoCo and lime
    Cause it's girls night out

I'm gonna do my Two Step, do my, do my two step, step tonight
I'm doing my two step, watch where you step
    Put you two steps behind
Hard to get but you want me ride that donkey
Straight to the back of the line
Gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step

Are you gonna sit there and think or buy me a drink, boy?
    What's your plan?
All my girls with me, you like what you see
Oh baby this is your last chance
You've been watching since the moment we walked in
So while your boys are busy be talkin'

I'm gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step, step tonight
I'm doing my two step, watch where you step
    Put you two steps behind
Hard to get but you want me ride that donkey
Straight to the back of the line
Gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step

    Now slide, slide, two steps
    Slide, slide, two steps
Work it out, work it out
    Grind, grind, grind, switch
    Slide, slide, two steps
    Slide, slide, two steps
Work it out, work it out
    Grind, grind, grind, switch

I'm gonna rock my cowboy hat and pink stilettos
We're gonna stomp and kick until they make us all go home
You wanna see if a little country girl can get down
    Let me show you how

Hey little lady, maybe you and me
Could possibly get together for a shot of Jack D
And take a little spinner by the dance floor
Tell me do you want more
All you gotta do is just say so
I can line dance, baby, I can buck dance
Take you down a dirt road, back of the truck dance
Cause Laura Bell you hell on the heart
Good Lord you're gonna tear this country boy apart

I'm gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step, step tonight
I'm doing my two step, watch where you step
    Put you two steps behind
Hard to get but you want me ride that donkey
Straight to the back of the line
Gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step

I'm gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step, step tonight
I'm doing my two step, watch where you step
    Put you two steps behind
Hard to get but you want me ride that donkey
Straight to the back of the line
Gonna do my two step, do my, do my, do my two step

    Two Step
  • This was the first single to be released by singer and actress Laura Bell Bundy after signing with Big Machine Records. The song melds country and dance music. She told Billboard magazine: "It was essentially a dance track - a country song written over a dance track, so it has the groove. Then, we wrote the structure of the country song over the acoustic instruments. The point was it's two-step, but not your traditional two-step. So, it's not the kind of two step where you have to wait for someone to ask you to do it. Typically, a girl will sit around and the only way she'll two step is if a guy asks her, if he gets up the nerve. This way, they don't have to feel embarrassed and can just get out there."
  • The country and western two-step, often called the "Texas two-step," is a dance usually performed to country music. Bundy told Billboard that her goal on this song was also to bring the two-step into the 2010s. "I wanted to put a more modern spin it," she said. "There's a lot of 'Teach Me How to Dougie,' 'The Cupid Slide,' or the 'Wobble,' and a lot of dance things going on in the clubs."
  • The song features a cameo from frequent collaborator Colt Ford. Bundy told Billboard that she has nothing but praise for the American country-rap artist. "Colt is awesome," she said. "We became friends, and met out on the road, and exchanged information. I had just completed doing the demo of 'Two Step.' I said I had this song, and I need a rap on it. It really lends itself to having that. So, I sent it to him, and he went into his home studio, did the rap, and sent it back. Then, I asked him to be in the video. He's just awesome."
  • In our interview with Colt Ford, we asked why he didn't do the two-step in this song. Said Ford: "I dance pretty good for a big ol' boy, but I'm not a choreography kind of guy. I like to do my own thing."

    Send Her My Love Lyrics

    Send Her My Love
  • This is about a guy who had a girlfriend, but had to let her go. He thought she deserved better, and they both knew that the love wasn't real. When he dreams, he calls out her name; he's still in love with her and he sees her face everywhere.
  • According to the liner notes in Journey's compilation Time3, during the band's three-month vacation following the "Escape" tours, their keyboard player Jonathan Cain listened to a lot of Beatles records. He played the chords for this song on the piano in his front room one afternoon for lead singer Steve Perry. "He could magically weave a melody over anything I could play," Cain said. Eventually released as the fourth single off Frontiers, it is one of Perry's personal favorites.
