The Enemy Inside Lyrics

Over and over again
I relive the moment
I'm bearing the burden within
Open wounds hidden under my skin

Pain is real as a cut that bleeds
The face I see every time I try to sleep
Staring at me crying

I'm running from The Enemy Inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

I sever myself from the world
And shut down completely
All alone in my own living hell
Overcome with irrational fear

Under the weight of the world on my chest
I buckle and break as I try to catch my breath
Tell me I'm not dying

I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

I'm a burden and a travesty
I'm a prisoner of regret
Between the flashbacks and the violent dreams
I am hanging on the edge

Disaster lurks around the bend
Paradise came to an end
And no magic pill
Can bring it back again

I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

The Enemy Inside
  • This punchy and melodic six-minute track was released as the first single from Dream Theater's eponymous twelfth studio album. Guitarist John Petrucci explained why they decided to make this the Progressive Metal band's first self-titled record. "I see every new album as an opportunity to start over," he said, "to either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career, and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We've fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic."
  • Petrucci discussed the song with MusicRadar.com : "'The Enemy Inside' is a great example of a song that hits you, it doesn't meander, and it has all of the compositional elements that make us unique," he said. "It has the metal parts, the prog parts, the solos, interludes, choruses – it's all there, but in a more concise way that packs a powerful punch."

"I wanted to write a fast-moving song on the seven-string with a big riff, a huge chorus and really fast, angular movements," Petrucci continued. "The irony is that we never intended for it to be a single, but it just kind of hooked everybody from the beginning. I always thought it would be a deeper cut on the album, more technical and fast, sort of a Panic Attack vibe. But it just turned out to be really catchy."
  • Asked by Ultimate-Guitar.com to define the kind of guitar sound he was going for on this track, Petrucci replied: "I describe it as a piece of chocolate cake and that was my goal in the studio. It's like I had a nice picture of a layered chocolate cake. Why chocolate cake? Well, chocolate cake is rich, creamy and it has layers. It's sweet but it has a lot of substance and has just the right amount of icing on the top. If you get this nice piece of chocolate cake there's nothing more satisfying than that. So I wanted that in a guitar sound - a chunky, rich, delicious sound (laughs)."
  • Petrucci told Music Radar regarding his guitar solo: "There's a bunch of different parts to the solo. I try to always keep it interesting, and I want everything to have a musical purpose. The solo comes in a little late; it goes right into the final chorus. It was sort of my job to come out of the previous vocal and get us to the end."
  • The song's music video was directed by Bill Fishman (the Ramones, Steve Ray Vaughan). The conceptual clip deals with the torment of a soldier who's struggling with reintegrating into his life back home due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Petrucci told Billboard magazine the PTSD subject matter seemed to really fit the song since it's fast-paced and has "kind of machine gun riffs. It almost makes you feel anxious."

He added: "Also at the time that we were in the studio working on the album and I was writing lyrics, the Boston Marathon bombings happened. There was a lot of discussion of terrorism and PTSD as if affects people who witness traumatic events like terrorism, so it was just very on my mind. It linked very well with the mood of the song, and as we started to get into it, I watched some documentaries and things like that. I was like, 'This is really something that needs to be written about.'"

  • Switchfoot frontman/lyricist Jon Foreman says that this track picks up where "Meant To Live" leaves off: "There is hope for meaning and truth in this life but it probably doesn't come in the form of a corporate slogan. We, the target market, want more than this world has to offer."

    Annabel Lyrics

When you dream you only dream your Annabel.
All the secrets there inside you Annabel.

Bound beneath an emerald sky sing Annabel.
Nothing that they did will stop you Annabel.

Land of the lines, tangled there in porcelain.
    Under the stars you'll begin.

When you dream you only dream your Annabel.
Sleep reminds you takes you there, oh Annabel.

    Gentle whisper, endless winters, Annabel.
Why've they could have let you be both Annabel.

Land of the lines, of the years below still lies.
You are the truth they denied.
Run like the sea, tangled there in porcelain.
    Under the stars you begin.

    Oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh ah
    (Only a boy under that)

    Oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh ah
(Only a boy da da da)

    Annabel
  • This work of baroque instrumentation and hushed vocals finds Alison Goldfrapp sighing about a girl trapped in the body of a boy: "why couldn't they let you be both?"

The song was inspired by Canadian short story writer and novelist Kathleen Winter's 2010 novel, Annabel, about a hermaphrodite who's raised as a boy but dreams of being a girl.
  • The song's black-and-white video was directed by Alison Goldfrapp's romantic partner, filmmaker Lisa Gunning. It follows the adventures of a little boy in the countryside who is accepted for his true self by his mother, played by the singer.

    Everything I Own Lyrics

    You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, set me free
The finest years I ever knew,
Were all the years I had with you

And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give Everything I Own,
Just to have you back again

You taught me how to love
What it's of, what it's of
    You never said too much,
But still you showed the way
And I knew from watching you

    Nobody else could ever know,
The part of me that can't let go

And I would give anything I own,
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own,
Just to have you back again

    Is there someone you know,
    Your loving them so,
But taking them all for granted?
You may lose them one day
    Someone takes them away,
And they don't hear the words you long to say

I would give anything I own,
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own,
Just to have you back again
Just to touch you once again

    Everything I Own
  • According to the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, at his father's funeral, a friend took David Gates aside and said, "Your dad was so proud of what you were doing." David agreed by replying, "My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record Everything I Own about him. If you listen to the words, 'You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free,' it says it all."
  • In 1974 at the suggestion of his producer Lloyd Chambers, Jamaican singer Ken Booth recorded a smooth reggae cover version, which topped the UK charts. Booth sang "Anything I Own" instead of "Everything" but retained the original title, making it one of the few UK #1s not to have the actual title featured in the lyrics. In 1987 Boy George recorded his electronic dance-pop version, this time singing "Everything" not "Anything," and again it topped the UK charts.
  • Larry Knechtel played the part on the harpsichord during the chorus, and the kick drum was doubled to get a thicker sound.

    Hold me in your arms
Oh in the sense of you
    When we're alone I'm free
    Until the morning comes
    Who are we

    I felt your coldness come
You're insatiable me I was blind
I gave to you the world all my world is you

At the mirror you gently comb your hair
    Humming your favorite song
You are the younger me in his arms

    I felt your coldness come
    My own Simone too casually
Daylight trickles in on your tremulous skin

A moonlit tear a devil designs

  • Alison Goldfrapp explained during a performance at New York City's Beacon Theatre that this song concerns a "wicked" daughter who beds her mother's lover. "These things happen, but only in England," she joked.
  • The song is from Goldfrapp's sixth album, Tales Of Us. Goldfrapp used the inclusive pronoun in the title because the record is all about Alison Goldfrapp and her musical partner, Will Gregory's emotional response to the uniquely affecting tales contained in the ten tracks.

    La Tristesse Durera Lyrics

    Life has been unfaithful
And it all promised so so much
    I am a relic
I am just a petrified cry
Wheeled out once a year, a cenotaph souvenir
The applause nails down my silence

    La Tristesse Durera
Scream to a sigh, to a sigh
    La Tristesse Durera
Scream to a sigh, to a sigh

    I see liberals
I am just a fashion accessory
    People send postcards
And they all hope I'm feeling well
    I retreat into self-pity, it's so easy
    Where they patronise my misery

    La Tristesse Durera
Scream to a sigh, to a sigh
    La Tristesse Durera
Scream to a sigh, to a sigh

    I sold my medal
    It paid a bill
    It sells at market stalls
    Parades Milan catwalks
    The sadness will never go
    Will never go away
    Baby it's here to stay

  • Manics guitarist Richey James Edwards (from Melody Maker, June 19, 1993): "We took the title from a book on Van Gogh, although the song's got nothing to do with Van Gogh. It means something like 'the sadness goes on,' and it's about the way life doesn't get any better as you get older. It's always a beautiful image every year when the war veterans turn out at the Cenotaph, and everyone pretends to care about them - but then they're shuffled off again and forgotten. I'm much more sympathetic towards older people than towards my generation - I think they have a lot more dignity, and seem to be able to take care of their problems themselves. People of my generation seems to be so selfish. I'm no exception, because you can't escape from the culture that surrounds you. A phrase like 'Trade Unionism,' and the idea of caring about the community you come from, is now seen as laughable - and of course, that's a product of the political culture over the last 15 years."

    Clay Lyrics

    Words sail
    Out into the wind
    Their meaning
    Taken by time

    Your deep seeing eyes
    Ancient stars

    We wanted only to love
How will I find you again?
    Fate or chance

    A beauty
    In uncertainty
    We fought them
    On great white sand

    Our shadows reframed memories
    We want only to live
Only to love and breathe again

Your white waves in the night
    Longing I'm lost
    In dreams of mine

Blue billowing green waves of grass
    The iron sky
    Turning in the looking glass

    Your deep seeing eyes
    Ancient stars

    You are wonderful light
    My only love
    Sleep well
    Good night

  • This song finds Alison Goldfrapp singing about two male lovers that were brought together by war then separated, permanently. She told The Idolator that it was inspired by a true story. "I found a letter on a website called Letters Of Note," Goldfrapp explained. "It's basically a letter from a soldier to another soldier. They met in [World War II] and became lovers, and tragically one of them dies in battle. So they're not able to ever resume their love. This letter is written on the anniversary of the other's death, and it just moved me so much that it inspired the song."
  • The Civil Wars song "D'Arline" from their 2013 eponymous album was inspired by a different letter found on the same website.

  • This endearing track finds Johnson recalling the days of his high school Punk band, who did covers of Minor Threat, Fugazi, and Bad Religion tunes. He told WXRT's Marty Lennartz: "It's all about our first band, Limber Chicken. It's the story of that band, how we got our instruments, practicing and stuff."

"It's funny, because we recorded it on a nylon string acoustic (guitar)," Johnson continued, "and an upright bass and a little hand drum. It's the most un-punk thing you've ever heard. It's pretty funny. As an 18-year-old, I would've just hated me for doing it. The lamest 38-year-old thing to do."

    Don't Worry Be Happy Lyrics

    Here's a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
    Don't worry, be happy
In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry you make it double
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy now

    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy

Ain't got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
    Don't worry, be happy
The landlord say your rent is late
    He may have to litigate
    Don't worry, be happy

    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy

(Look at me, I'm happy, don't worry, be happy
Here I give you my phone number, when you worry, call me,
I make you happy, don't worry, be happy)
Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style
Ain't got no gal to make you smile
    Don't worry, be happy
'Cause when you worry your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
    Don't worry, be happy

    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy

    (Don't worry, don't worry, don't do it
Be happy, put a smile on your face
    Don't bring everybody down
Don't worry, it will soon pass, whatever it is
    Don't worry, be happy
    I'm not worried, I'm happy)

    Don't Worry Be Happy
  • This song reached #1 on the US pop charts, which is astounding for a song sung a cappella (without instruments). McFerrin recorded it using only his body to make all the sounds.
  • There were rumors that McFerrin attempted suicide after doing this song, and they are not true. However the rumors became so strong that even to this day people think Bobby is dead. This is untrue, he is alive and well.
  • The phrase "Don't Worry Be Happy" came from the Indian guru Meher Baba. In an interview with USA Weekend magazine, McFerrin explained that he saw a poster of Meher Baba with the phrase and thought it was "a pretty neat philosophy in four words." See the poster in Song Images.
  • This was featured in the films Cocktail (1988) and Casper - A Spirited Beginning (1997).
  • This won 1988 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Performance and Song Of The Year.
  • George H. W. Bush used this in his 1988 US presidential campaign but stopped doing so after McFerrin objected.
  • The phrase "Don't Worry Be Happy" was used in some cases to criticize people with a rosy outlook on the world, as if they were oblivious to problems. The most notable use of the phrase in this context came from the rap group Public Enemy in their song "Fight The Power" when vocalist Chuck D declared: "Don't Worry Be Happy was a number one jam. Damn, if I say it you can slap me right here." Chuck later explained that he had no animosity toward McFerrin or this song, but was using the phrase as a call to action.
  • Robin Williams appears in the video, as does the lesser-known comedian Bill Irwin.
