No Doubt About It Lyrics

Just like every lock's got to have a key.
Every river flows, looking for the sea.
And when you plant a seed,
it reaches for the sky
that's just the way it is, nobody wonders why
Like coffee needs a cup, you know that it ain't
much good without it. We were meant to be together....No Doubt About It.

Like a hammer and a nail, socks and shoes
we go hand in hand like a rhythym and blues.
You're the one I'm dreaming of, got to have your love, can't live without it. We were meant to be together, no doubt about it. No they're ain't no doubt about it.

Something was missing it was making me blue. But all ever wanted is you.

No Doubt About It
  • Nashville songwriters John Scott Sherrill and Steve Seskin wrote this song. Says Sherrill: "That was not from any deep personal experience, it was just a love song. By that point, I had gotten remarried and I wasn't as full of angst as I may have been a year earlier. It was pretty easy to write a happy love song with Steve Seskin - he's a happy kind of guy. He's terrific and jolly."
  • This was Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton's first dance song at their wedding on May 14, 2011. McCoy also performed at their nuptials along with several other country stars.

Money on my mind, you should think the same
    J's on, pinky ring
Dogging these hoes, I need quarantine
In the same league, but we don't ball the same
(Ah) She want all the fame, I hear that shit all the time
She said she love me, I said, "Baby girl, fall in line"
Okay, made a million, off of denim, fuck, watch me switch it up
Walked in, "Ill nigga alert! Ill nigga alert!"
You need that work, I got that work, got bitches in my condo
Just bought a shirt that cost a Mercedes-Benz car note
From the A to Toronto, we let the metal go off
And my dick so hard it make the metal detector go off
This that sauce, this that dressing, Givenchy, nigga God bless you
If having a bad bitch was a crime, I'd be arrested (True)

    I touched down in '86
Knew I was a man by the age of 6
I even fucked the girl that used to babysit
But that was years later on some crazy shit
I heard your new shit, nigga hated it
Damon Wayans, homie don't play that shit
I get paid a lot, you get paid a bit
And my latest shit is like a greatest hits
God damn, ain't no wishing over on this side
Y'all don't fuck with us, then we don't fuck with y'all
It's no different over on this side
God damn, should I listen to everybody or myself?
    Cause myself just told myself
"You're the motherfucking man, you don't need no help"
Cashing checks and I’m bigging up my chest,
Y'all keep talking ‘bout who next
But I’m about as big as it gets
    I swear y'all just wasting y'all breath
I’m the light skinned Keith Sweat
    I'mma make it last forever
It’s not your turn ‘cause I ain't done yet
Look, just understand that I’m on a roll like Cottonelle
I was made for all of this shit
And I’m on the road box office sales
I’m getting paid for all of this shit
Ask you to please excuse my table manners
I was making room for the table dancers
‘Cause if we judging off your advances
I just got paid like eight advances

I'm finna do what I didn't do and still waking up like the rent's due
    Not complicated, it's simple
    I got sexy ladies, a whole Benz-full
And to them hoes I'm everything, everything but gentle
But I still take my time, man, I guess I'm just old fashioned
Wearing retro shit, that's old fashioned
Nigga, see what I'm saying, no closed caption
I paint pics, see the shit, good sex, need to hit
Keep a broad on the floor year 'round like season tickets
I plead the fifth, drink a fifth
Load the nine, leave you split
In the half, smoke a half, need a zip
My new girl is on Glee and shit
Probably making more money than me and shit
I swear to God I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one
I got 99 problems, getting rich ain't one
    Like I got trust issues
I'm sorry for the people I've pushed out
I'm the type to have a bullet-proof condom and still gotta pull out
But that's just me, and I ain't perfect
    I ain't a saint but I am worth it
If it's one thing, I am worth it
Niggas still hating but it ain't working
    Lil' bitch

Oh me, oh me, oh my
I think I done fucked too many women from the 305
Before the end of this year, I'll do King of Diamonds three more times
Smoking on that kush all in our section like it's legalized
Girl, you can't always have your way, sometimes it be like that
They don't really fuck with you like that, they ain't never did me like that
I just took my time, you got your shine, I let you eat like that
I've been taught to never loan somebody what you need right back
And I need that shit right back? (no more free Randy)
    I’m blessed than a motherfucka
Niggas been stressed than a motherfucka
Niggas getting nervous, clutching they chests like a motherfucka
    Damn that’s a motherfucker
Tell the truth, I don’t listen to you
‘Cause I don’t like being lied to

    All Me
  • Drake teamed up with Big Sean and 2 Chainz for this Nothing Was the Same track. The song begins with sampled dialogue from comedian and actor Aziz Ansari's Funny People clueless character Randy Springs. We then hear 2 Chainz, Drake and Big Sean each in turn bragging of their lifestyles, whilst The Toronto MC takes on the hook himself.
  • The beat was supplied by Key Wane, who is the primary producer on Big Sean's Hall of Fame: Memoirs of a Detroit Player album.
  • Big Sean shouts out his girlfriend, Naya Rivera, as well as giving a nod to a classic Jay-Z cut in his verse:
"My new girl is on Glee and s--t.
Probably making more money than me and s--t.
I swear to God, I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one."
  • Sean had wanted the beat for his Hall Of Fame album. He explained to MTV News: "[Drake] records a lot at his house in L.A., and I was recording in L.A. for Hall of Fame, so we'll kick it and exchange . Key Wane had that beat, and it was funny because I wanted to use it for Hall of Fame and [Drake] wanted to use the beat too."

"I had done a verse to [Key's beat] and didn't know [Drake] did a song to it," Sean added. "I sent him the verse and [Drake's] like, 'You bodied this s--t.' Then we had the song forever. He was like, 'I already did my verse and 2 Chainz did his verse but we've gotta get the right chorus,' and that took a while. But everything happened at the right time."
  • Drake references the Miami strip club King Of Diamonds in the fourth verse. He previously referred to one of club's strippers, Blac Chyna, on the Thank Me Later track, "Miss Me" when he rapped "Call the King of Diamonds and tell Chyna it'd be worth the flight."

I keep thinkin' any minute you'll be comin' home honey
I ain't seen nothin' of you in a month of sundays
Tell me How Long Gone are you gonna be

All you said was you had to get goin'
Oh but baby I wouldn't mind knowin' just
How long gone are you gonna be

How am I supposed to make any plans
When I still don't even understand
If you're ever gonna come back home to me
How long gone are you gonna be

Maybe I didn't pay enough attention
But I do believe you forgot to mention
Just how long gone are you gonna be

The phone ain't ringin', 'cause you still ain't callin'
I ain't been hearin' your footsteps fallin'
Tell me how long gone are you gonna be

How am I supposed to make any plans
When I still don't even understand
If you're ever gonna come back home to me
    Tell me please

    How Long Gone
  • Nashville songwriters John Scott Sherrill and Shawn Camp wrote this. Says Sherrill: "When we wrote it, it was almost a ballad - slow mid-tempo with a lilting little acoustic guitar lick that forms the basis of the song. When Ronnie and Kix first heard it, they weren't so sure about it. I think it was (producer) Don Cook who talked them into it. He said, 'I think we can mop this thing up and turn it into a Brooks & Dunn kind of thing,' and boy, they sure did. I thought that was great what they did there."
  • Many of the more personal songs Sherrill has written have become hits, including "Nothin' But The Wheel" by Patty Loveless and "Modern Day Drifter" by Dierks Bentley. This was not written from his personal experience. Says Sherrill, "That might of come from Shawn's inner personal turmoil banks, but not mine. I think he's writing about somebody I don't know."
  • The line, "A month of Sundays" is a southern expression Sherrill's mother used to say. It means a long time - 31 Sundays, that's a long time.

    3000 Miles Lyrics

    First winter's snowfall
    Throwing backyard snowballs
    Warming up by the fireplace
Marshmallows catch fire on an open flame
    All my friends get together
Wishing I was there but I'm never
Living in the sunshine oh but dreaming of a place called home

I wanna run wanna run away
I'm dreaming of a place called home
I could try but I'm stuck in today
    I'm dreaming of a place that's
    3000 Miles away
    Feels like is forever
    Seems like yesterday
We were we were running 'round town together
This place, just ain't the same
    I miss the stormy weather
    I'm not okay
    3000 miles away

You don't pick up but I keep redialing
Cause you're asleep got your phone on silent
Still early here I'm wide awake
I just wanna hear you tell me all about today
Although I never really showed it
I had to leave for me to notice
That living in the sunshine's cold I'm dreaming of a place called home

I wanna run wanna run away
I'm dreaming of a place called home
I could try but I'm stuck in today
    I'm dreaming of a place that's 3000 miles away
    Feels like is forever
    Seems like yesterday
We were we were running 'round town together
This place, just ain't the same
    I miss the stormy weather
    I'm not okay
    3000 miles

If I could go back for the weekend
    Or just for a day
To see to see familiar faces, that's all it would take
    But it's too far

    3000 miles away
    Feels like it's forever
    Seems like yesterday
We were we were running around town together
This place, just ain't the same
    I miss the stormy weather
    I'm not okay
    3000 miles away

    3000 miles away
    Feels like it's forever

  • Emblem3 formed in their home town of Sequim, Washington in 2007 before relocating to California to pursue their career. This slow ballad finds the trio longing to be back with their family and friends. "For me, this song is about home, and back in Washington state, the town that I grew up in, friends, family that I miss that I don't get to see anymore," Emblem 3 member Drew Chadwick explained to MTV News. "It's basically about missing them and reminiscing about all the good times you used to have."
  • Sequim to California is a long way, but certainly not 3,000 miles. Our West Coast expert tells us that the driving distance from Sequim to Los Angeles is 1175 Miles and would take just under 18 hours.
  • The tune has a feel of a rock power ballad from a previous generation. "[The song] does have a lot of '90s influence - actually, you know, it's not the '90s influence," Chadwick said to Radio.com "It's just the basic, traditional song structure with all real instruments. It doesn't have any over the edge synthesizers or extra production. It has the necessities which, when you strip it down like that, it leaves room to actually see the soul and the emotion."

    Church On Cumberland Road Lyrics

    Just about a mile off-a one-oh-nine,
There's a little church sittin' back in the pines.
    I promised that girl she was gonna be mine;
I wouldn't be surprised if she was standin' there cryin'.

    Chorus:
Wo-ah, I didn't know this bored-out Ford could go so slow.
Wo-ah, You got to put your foot down on the floor,
'Yeah we've been rocking all night, now, don't you know
You gotta get me to the Church On Cumberland Road.

Billy's passed out in the back, But I think he's alive.
Bobby's got his head hangin' over the side.
Here we are doin' only ninety-five.
What's the matter with you, man? I thought you said you could
    drive!

    (Chorus)

    Verse3:
Sweeter than the dew on a honeysuckle vine,
Hotter than noon on the Fourth of July,
Cutest little girl that I ever have known
Waitin' at the church on Cumberland Road.

    (Chorus)

    Church On Cumberland Road
  • This was written and originally recorded by John Scott Sherrill, Bob DiPiero and Dennis Robbins, who had a band called The Billy Hill Boys. Says Sherrill: "Billy was a fictitious character, and for some reason, that idea didn't really fly. The lead singer of the band was fictitious, which created all kinds of problems at radio and with gigs, but we had a ball. We put out one album with Warner Brothers and got halfway through another one. We had a great time out on the road and had a chance to do some writing. The Shenandoah guys heard it and made a great record of that song."
  • Sherrill: "That song stems from an experience Bob DiPiero had in London. He was dead drunk in a pub outside of town with some songwriting friends of his over there. They staggered out, and in the moonlight across from the pub was an old ancient British church - small but with a big steeple. A stone church in the moonlight, and it was so beautiful that he staggered over there and he hugged it. He said, 'I'm going to write a song about you someday.' He told us that story when he got back in Nashville. We had been jamming with that melody for The Church On Cumberland Road, so we just transferred his church to America in our minds and put it out here on Cumberland Road."
  • Cumberland Road is off of River Road in West Nashville. There is a real church there - a little white church.

I don’t need to be impressive, I don’t need to run the game
I don’t want to keep on chasing, maybe I'll just go my way

Ayeee ee ayee ee everything’s gonna be alright, alright

I don’t need no late night cruisin, I don’t even got a car

Ayeee ee ayee ee everything’s gonna be alright, alright
So don’t fear tomorrow, let that be the motto
And just pass the bottle and we’ll make it hotter
Like ayeee ee ayee ee everything’s gonna be alright, alright tonight

I don’t need no debby downer, I just wanna keep my buzz
I don’t wanna no melodrama, I don’t gotta trip because

Ayeee ee ayee ee everything’s gonna be alright, alright

    How Beautiful You Are Lyrics

You want to know why I hate you?
    Well I'll try and explain.
You remember that day in Paris
When we wandered through the rain
    And promised to each other
That we'd always think the same
    And dreamed that dream
To be two souls as one
And stopped just as the sun set
    And waited for the night
    Outside a glittering building
Of glittering glass and burning light
And in the road before us
    Stood a weary greyish man
Who held a child upon his back
A small boy by the hand
The three of them were dressed in rags
    And thinner than the air
And all six eyes stared fixedly on you

    The father's eyes said "Beautiful!
    How Beautiful You Are!"
    The boy's eyes said
    "How beautiful!
    She shimmers like a star!"
    The childs eyes uttered nothing
But a mute and utter joy
And filled my heart with shame for us
    At the way we are

I turned to look at you
To read my thoughts upon your face
And gazed so deep into your eyes
    So beautiful and strange
    Until you spoke
And showed me understanding is a dream
    "I hate these people staring
Make them go away from me!"

    The fathers eyes said "Beautiful!
    How beautiful you are!"
    The boys eyes said
"How beautiful! She glitters like a star!"
    The child's eyes uttered joy
And stilled my heart with sadness
    For the way we are

And this is why I hate you
    And how I understand
That no one ever knows or loves another

    Or loves another

    How Beautiful You Are
  • The lyrics are almost identical to a poem written by Charles Baudelaire around 1869. The Poem is called The Eyes Of The Poor. It starts with the line, "So you would like to know why I hate you today?" and goes on to explain the story just as the song does.
  • Vocalist Robert Smith reflected on the songwriting process and the influence of a book of Baudelaire poems in a 1987 interview with Promotional 12": "I read through them all and one just really struck me, because I'd actually written a song like that... about how you think that you really know someone, and you really love someone, and suddenly discover that they can react to something you find very important, and they react in a totally different way, and you can't believe that it's the same person. I had a set of words that had that sort of idea in it."

He added: "Once I'd read it I thought it's really a good idea actually having it so that you take it down to one incident. I tried doing it into a very general sense of not understanding someone, but then I thought I should actually take one particular incident and write a song - that was about the most difficult song to write because I wanted to get it just right, so that it sounded like a song rather than just a literary exercise."

    Mami mueve los coco,
    I don't care where you're from
As long as you got that babu bam

    I can't believe it
    White girl got some ass
    I wanna see it
    Black girl got a ass
    It ain't a secret
    Baby turn around
I wanna see it, tryin' to see it, gotta see it
I wanna see that babu iam bam, baram bam baram
Babu iam bam, baram bam baram
Babu iam bam, baram bam baram
Babu iam bam, baram bam baram

    Now turn left, turn right
Turn around you could tell what I like
She love good, she so bad
She kick it up, drop it down, look back.

Babu iam bam, baram bam baram
Babu iam bam, baram bam baram
Babu iam bam, baram bam baram
Babu iam bam, baram bam baram

    I can't believe it
    White girl got some ass
I wanna see it, baram bam baram.
    I can't believe it
    White girl got some ass
I wanna see it, baram bam baram.

    Can't Believe It
  • The lead single from The Perfect 10 finds Flo Rida teaming up with Cuban-American rapper Pitbull. The song, which is dedicated to their love of the female posterior, was released on July 30, 2013.
  • The accompanying music video was directed by Geremy & Georgie Legs and sees an assortment of women shaking their behinds. The clip shares striking similarities with the visuals for both Major Lazer's "Bubble Butt" and Diplo's solo track "Butter's Theme." Diplo, who as leader of Major Lazer, was responsible for both tracks expressed his ire on Twitter. "I'll totally fight Flo-rida in a street fight and totally get my ass whooped," he said. "But I'll fight him anyway cuz I'll fight for what I believe in."

Speaking on MTV's RapFix Live, Flo Rida denied that he was ripping off Diplo explaining that the clip is a homage to some older booty-masters. "[The] only thing stands out in that is the fact that I thank God I can afford a mansion," he laughed. "I haven't even seen the ['Butter's Theme'] video, but shout out to Sir Mix-A-Lot, 2 Live Crew who definitely inspired my video."

I Know Him So Well Lyrics

Nothing it so good it lasts eternally.
    Perfect situations must go wrong.
But this has never yet prevented me,
Wanting far too much for far too long.

Looking back, I could have played it differently,
Learned about the man before I fell,
But it took time to understand the man,
Now at least I know I know him well.

    Wasn't it good
    (Oh so good)
    Wasn't it fine
    (Oh so fine)
    Isn't it madness
    He can't be mine.
But in the end he needs a little bit more than me
    (More security)
He needs his fantasies and freedom
    I Know Him So Well.

No one in your life is with you constantly
No one is completely on your side,
And though I move my world to be with him,
Still the gap between him is too much.

Looking back I could have played it differently,
One or a few more who can tell,
But I was ever so much younger then,
Now at least I know I know him well.

    Wasn't it good
    (Oh so good)
    Wasn't it fine
    (Oh so fine)
    Isn't it madness
    He can't be mine.

    Didn't I know,
How it would go from the start If I knew,
    Why am I falling apart.

    Wasn't it good
    Wasn't it fine
    Isn't it madness,
    He can't be mine.
But in the end he needs a little bit more than me.
    (More security)
He needs his fantasies and freedom.
    I know him so well.

It took time to understand him.
    I know him so well

    I Know Him So Well
  • Although they each had hits as solo artists, this was the only UK #1 for Paige and Dickson. Paige had previously starred in Evita and Dickson was a former folk singer.
  • The song is from the musical Chess. It was written by Tim Rice with Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from Abba. It gave Benny and Bjorn their 10th #1 as writers.
  • Chess took 2 years to write. Bjorn says, "We were very pleased as we had something longer to work on, both the bigger format and the concept of drama and music together. I can see now that there is quite a lot of that in the later Abba songs, so we were working towards that. "One Night In Bangkok" and "I Know Him So Well" could well have been Abba songs. We had Elaine Paige in mind from the start. She was with Tim at the time and she was the best theater singer in the world. When we heard Barbara Dickson, we realized that she was wonderful too. She retained that folksy quality even when she did Chess and that really attracted me."
  • Barbara Dickson recalls, "It sounded to the average person in the street like a fantastic new Abba record and they loved the chance of buying an Abba record again. It was a sophisticated song- two women singing different things about the same man. We didn't record it together. Elaine had been to Stockholm and done the recording and I was brought in much later. When the record came out, we promoted it together of course." (Both the above quotes are taken from 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh.
  • This is the all time best selling song for a female duo in the UK.
  • The song has reached the UK Top 20 on two further occasions. In 2001 it featured on the double A-side of the last ever Steps single, reaching #5 as the flip to "Words Are Not Enough." Ten years later, a cover by Susan Boyle and comedian Peter Kay recorded for Comic Relief peaked at #11.

  • The second single from Jay Sean's Neon album is a near-psychedelic ode to getting high with your lover that features YMCMB's family friend Rick Ross. The song was produced by Orange Factory Music, who comprise producers J Remy and Bobby Bass. The duo were responsible for the discovery and development of Sean.
  • The song is a classic R&B tune taking influence from soulful singers like D'Angelo and Maxwell. "There's this concept in mainstream music at the moment, Keep It Simple Stupid or KISS. It's this the way to satisfy the general public," Sean told Radio.com . "But for me, when you apply that, you take out some of the soul, some of the substance, and I don't want to do that."

He added, "You have to breathe the music. When I'm making that music, it's coming from the heart and there's nothing more open and honest to just say and sing what you feel."
  • The cut shows off Sean's falsetto. "Those songs, when you sing like that, tend to be sexy," he explained to Radio.com of using his higher voice.

    Midnight at the Oasis Lyrics

    Midnight at the Oasis
    Send your camel to bed
    Shadows painting our faces
Traces of romance in our heads
    Heaven's holding a half-moon
    Shining just for us
Let's slip off to a sand dune, real soon
And kick up a little dust
Come on, Cactus is our friend
    He'll point out the way
Come on, till the evening ends
    Till the evening ends
    You don't have to answer
    There's no need to speak
I'll be your belly dancer, prancer
And you can be my sheik

    I know your Daddy's a sultan
    A nomad known to all
With fifty girls to attend him, they all send him
Jump at his beck and call
But you won't need no harem, honey
    When I'm by your side
And you won't need no camel, no no
When I take you for a ride
Come on, Cactus is our friend
    He'll point out the way
Come on, till the evening ends
    Till the evening ends
    Midnight at the oasis
    Send your camel to bed
    Got shadows painting our faces
And traces of romance in our heads

    Midnight at the Oasis
  • This song was written by David Nichtern , a composer who also became a renown teacher of Shambhala Buddhism. He told us the story of this song, which is one of the more sensual tunes you will come across. Said Nichtern: "I wrote the song before I started working with Maria... the details are a little bit intimate, but let's just say there was a girl, a waterbed, feta cheese and grape leaves, and a Martin 000-18 near by.

I actually produced the demo (in Woodstock) that got Maria her Warner Bros individual artist deal, so I was on the map already with them to that extent. On that demo was a song I wrote called 'I Never Did Sing You a Lovesong' which made it onto the album but was re-recorded. Also we demoed a track that Wendy Waldman wrote called 'Mad Mad Me (I Love You)' which made it onto the album as it was so I got producer credit for that track.

My memory is that I came out to LA and got to play rhythm guitar on several tracks. From there I got more and more involved with the record. At a rehearsal, I played 'Midnight at the Oasis' for Lenny Waronker and he liked it and wanted to include it on the record.

We recorded it with some great musicians - Jim Gordon on drums (who later went crazy and killed his own mother and went to prison for life I think). Freebo played bass, Mark Jordan on piano and me on acoustic guitar. Later, Famous Amos Garrett added that amazing electric guitar part and solo, which in some circles is as famous as the song itself.

Warner's released the album and then Midnight as the first single... they hung in there with it for something like nine months until it took off.... that might not happen today... the rest is herstory as they say..."
  • Maria Muldaur is an Italian singer who was born Maria D'Amato. Muldaur is to white female pop singers what Anita O'Day is to white female jazz singers: way hipper than the herd. She recorded in the '60s with the Even Dozen and Jim Kweskin jug bands and with her then-husband, Geoff Muldaur, before going out on her own with this 1973 recording.

Sidemen include Jim Dickinson, Spooner Oldham, Jim Keltner, Mac Rebennack, Ray Brown, and Dave Holland. Among the tunes on her self-titled album are Jimmie Rodgers' "Any Old Time," Dolly Parton's "My Tennessee Mountain Home," and the album's hit, "Midnight At The Oasis."
  • In our Maria Muldaur interview , she explained: I was making my first solo album for Warner Brothers in 1973, and I had just recently separated from my then-husband, Geoff Muldaur, who not only was my partner, but also my musical partner, and sort of the mastermind of, musically, whatever we did together. So being a solo artist was completely strange and alien and rather scary territory for me.

And so I was out in California finding myself in the studio with all the top guns: Dr. John , Ry Cooder, David Lindley; I mean, all the fabulous guys that played on my first album. And I had been working with a young guitarist named David Nichtern when I first separated from Geoffrey. He was very encouraging and told me, 'You can do this.' I was just sobbing and I was a mess. We had a little talk and he would say, 'Look, people still know you from the Jug Band, and if I can get work in these little coffee houses, you can, too.' And so we put together a few tunes, and he got us some gigs. This was real low-profile stuff. I'd be crying all the way up to the gig, and he'd say, 'Okay, dry your eyes and wash your face. We're on in half an hour.' And he was just a very supportive little brother to me.

And so when I found myself out in California doing this solo album, I was going to do one of his songs. He's a very lovely songwriter and he'd written this beautiful song called 'I Never Did Sing You a Lovesong.' Very lyrical little waltz-y, kind of a country waltz kind of thing. And he knew I had all these really fabulous musicians at the studio. But he came out on his own dime, because he just felt, well, maybe they'll let him play rhythm guitar on his own tune or something. So he came on out in his little VW bug and slept on a mattress on my living room floor in the Hollywood Hills and came to the studio, was observing everything, and did get to play on his own song.

And then we were almost finished recording, the producer came in the studio and said, 'You know, I've been listening to the rough mixes, and I think we're in pretty good shape.' He said, 'You know, we've got some up tempo stuff and we've got some nice ballads. I think if we had one more medium tempo song, then the album would be nicely balanced out, we'd be in good shape. Does anything come to mind?'

So David was standing right there, and just off the top of my head, kind of as a gesture of gratitude to him because he had been so supportive to me, kind of holding my hand through all of this, which was very overwhelming, you know, I'd never been in that position before of being a solo artist and trying to make my way through an album that was all about me. And I said, 'Well, David has this song. It's a funny little song, really, but it is medium tempo.' I said, 'David, play them 'Midnight at the Oasis' and see what you think.' Which I'd heard before and I thought it was just a goofy little song; I didn't think much of it one way or the other. So he whipped out his guitar and started to play it on the guitar, and I sang it. And the producer cocked his head, he said, 'Oh, that's cute, okay, wanna do that one?' So as a gesture to David, I said, 'Yeah, let's do that one. I have no other bright ideas.' And we called in some great studio players and we cut it. And the rest is history."
  • A hit song can become a burden to a singer if she is sick of the song yet still expected to perform it night after night. So how does Muldaur feel about constantly performing this song? She told us: "I still do enjoy singing it. And you know why? Because number one, it was a very hip-ly written song. A lot of the jazz artists have covered it because it's very well constructed. Imagine my plight if my big hit had been 'Wild Thing' by the Troggs, a really dumb three-chord song. But it's a song that's so well constructed that an artist can improvise on it night after night. So that's reason number one, it's a cool song.

Reason number two is I love the look of the faces of the audience when the band strikes that number up, when the band goes into the intro of that number. Because apparently, from all the stories that have been told to me when I meet my fans after the show to sign my CD, that song was the soundtrack to many a love-and-lust affair, and if I had been writing down all the stories of what people tell me they were doing or were inspired to do because of that song, or as that song was playing, I could have written quite the little x-rated book. So when I start that song, people's faces light up and I see very happy, maybe slightly x-rated memories flitting across their faces. And so that's worth more than any Grammy nomination or award - to hear first hand from your fans, from hundreds and hundreds of fans, how a piece of music I didn't even write, but that I selected and recorded and just put out there in the airwaves, just had such a happy impact on people's lives. What a gift is that?"

    Applause
  • The lead single from ARTPOP was penned by Gaga with the Chicago producer DJ White Shadow, who also worked with the singer on Born This Way. The song was originally scheduled to be released on August 19, 2013 but the singer's label was forced drop it a week earlier following a series of online leaks. Gaga debuted the tune live at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, 2013.
  • Gaga sings on the song of living for her fans' applause - the way they cheer and scream for her. "In my heart of hearts as I was writing, I knew that if I asked [the fans] to cheer for me before I sang or if I alluded to the fact that they would cheer for me before I sang," said Gaga to Women's Wear Daily. "They do that all the time for me; before I even open my mouth, the fans start cheering for me. And so this exclamation, 'Give me that thing that I love. Give it to me. I'm ready, start the music.' I'm from New York. I've worked since I was a five-year-old to be a performer. All my life. I deserve to be here. I'm ready."
  • Speaking with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show, Gaga spoke about how her failing hip influenced this song. "When I was finishing the [Born This Way] tour, I was physically breaking," she said. "I was in a lot of pain, but didn't know where really. I have a strong threshold for pain, so I kept slapping myself saying, 'Get it together.' The only thing that kept me going was the applause. And I was able to drown out the pain and finish the show."

Gaga was diagnosed with a labral tear of her right hip, and was forced to take a break for surgery. The singer told Seacrest how she put all of her energy in to making her third album while she was recovering from her injury. "ARTPOP is a celebration and a poetic musical journey through my friends and I hanging out and enjoying being Pop stars," she explained. "And that's what really inspired the record is that time off."
  • Gaga told Seacrest that the track "almost didn't make the album" until she met with Interscope Records chief Jimmy Iovine and played him 40 songs during a meeting. She said: "We played 'Applause' last and Jimmy said to me, 'Well every single record you've played me has been better than the one you played before it, so the last one should be the first single.'"
  • DJ White Shadow explained to MTV News how the song took on a whole new meaning after Gaga canceled her remaining dates on her Born This Way tour to undergo hip surgery. "Over a period of time it develops into a cohesive idea," he explained. "We write the songs in parts. So basically what I'm saying is that all of them have some kind of meaning. And when she wrote that [song] ... she was hurting that whole entire time. And after she figured out what it was that was hurting and figured how severe that was and had that time off, we had time to go back and like really sit around and craft and take it to the next level."

He added, "When she did that to her hip we didn't know what the single was going to be. We had no idea."
  • Some Twitter users have joked that they thought the song was titled 'Applesauce'. "So I guess @LadyGaga lives for the applause," tweeted one. "I, on the other hand, live for the applesauce."
  • Gaga sparked controversy with a Twitter competition which urged her followers to buy multiple copies of the song, make constants radio requests, and post about the track repeatedly on Twitter. The Mother Monster offered her fans the chance to fly to her appearance at the iTunes Festival in London to meet her, but the suggestion that followers who buy multiple copies of the single and prove it would be entered into the contest caused a bit of a hullabaloo. With multiple purchases counting toward the track's chart placing, many complained that Gaga was artificially inflating the success of the tune.
  • Gaga came under fire in 2011 when similarities were noted between the melody of her "Born This Way" and Madonna's 1989 hit single, "Express Yourself." After releasing this song, fans and reviewers took to the net concerning resemblances between this song and another Madonna track, her 2012 cut, "Girl Gone Wild." A 'mash-up' of the two songs quickly spread across the web.
  • The song's music video was directed by Dutch fashion photographers and past Gaga collaborators Inez & Vinoodh and was inspired by Gaga's passion for shapeshifting. We see the singer wearing an assortment of outfits including a clam shell bikini and a dress made of grass-green mosaic tiles. There are 12 costume changes in total and Gaga told Good Morning America: "When we were on set we did a lot of different looks and they're each very representative of different parts of me, as well as my obsession with transforming."
  • Inez van Lamsweerde, who is one half of Inez & Vinoodh told MTV News that the big idea of the video was to have Gaga symbolize the moment of her hip breaking. She explained: "That's why she's sort of holding up her right leg as a trophy and this idea that no matter what it takes, she'll get back onstage."

The Clamshell Bikini was inspired by Botticelli's famous painting of The Birth of Venus, which depicts the goddess Venus, having emerged from the sea as a fully grown woman, arriving at the seashore. Inez added that they were also inspired by "having this idea that she goes through this struggle to go back onstage, which is in that pink laser tower. And she's sort of dragging that leg as a trophy and making it back on stage as a fully-realized, complete new person and that's why the Botticelli came to mind."

The scene where Gaga's head appears on a black swan was inspired by the singer's fascination with eggs. Inez told MTV News: "She's always had the egg reference in her work and since this video is kind of about a rebirth and at the end there's the Botticelli Birth of Venus reference, so we said, 'OK, an egg... a fur egg and what comes out of a fur egg?' In our minds, a black swan with her face on it."
  • Gaga sings about her affinity for American artist Jeff Koons in this song:

"One second I'm a Koons fan
Then suddenly the Koons is me."

Jeff Koons is known for his reproductions of banal objects, one of which, Tulips, was sold for $33,682,500 at Christie's New York on November 14, 2012. The artist created the ARTPOP album cover, which features his nude sculpture of Gaga.
  • Gaga told The Guardian that rather than being a song for herself, "Applause" is as universal as any love song. "It's so interesting for people to say that the lyrics are all about me the performer," she said. "I want you to feel that way about yourself, that's why I wrote the song. I want you to wake up in the morning and say: 'I live for your applause, look at me today, I'm having a great day, I'm going to work and I'm going to have a fantastic lunch with my friends.' But it's not to be taken quite as seriously and as literally as people make it to be, which is why in the verses I'm sort of making fun of what people think about fame."
  • When she hosted Saturday Night Live on November 16, 2013, Gaga used this song in her monologue, turning the concept of cheap applause into a comedy bit. "Give it up for New York," she said, before explaining that there were two types of applause: the kind you earn and the kind you get by pandering to the audience. "I am a fan of both, and I wrote a song about," she said, launching into a brief performance of the song.
  • The song topped the singles charts in several countries including Hungary, Lebanon and Spain. It also reached #1 on Billboard's US Dance/Electronic Songs and US Hot Dance Club Songs listings.
  • In 2014, this was used in commercials for the Kia Soul.
