Talk Of The Town Lyrics

Such a drag to want something sometime
One thing leads to another I know
Was a time wanted you for mine
Nobody knew
You arrived like a day
And passed like a cloud
I made a wish, I said it out loud
Out loud in a crowd
Everybody heard
'Twas the Talk Of The Town

It's not my place to know what you feel
I'd like to know but why should I?
Who were you then, who are you now?
Common laborer by night, by day highbrow
Back in my room I wonder, then I
Sit on the bed, look at the sky
Up in the sky
Clouds rearrange
Like the talk of the town

Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday
Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday
You've changed your place in this world
You've changed your place in this world

Oh but it's hard to live by the rules
I never could and still never do
The rules and such never bothered you
You call the shots and they follow
I watch you still from a distance then go
Back to my room, you never know
I want you, I want you but now
Who's the talk of the town?

Talk Of The Town
  • This song was named after a real London nightspot. Located in Leicester Square, it opened in 1900 as "The London Hippodrome," and it hosted various circus acts, variety shows and musical performances. In 1958 is was renovated and reopened as "The Talk of the Town," becoming a cabaret restaurant where many artists would perform, including Frank Sinatra and The Temptations. It closed in 1982 and was revived as a nightclub called "The Hippodrome." In 2009, it was once again closed, this time with plans to make it a casino.
  • The lyrics are filled with a longing for a seemingly unobtainable love. It is thought that they refer to Ray Davies, the frontman of the Kinks who later fathered Chrissie Hynde's child.
  • Chrissie Hynde shared the inspiration for the song during a performance on the BBC Songwriters Circle program in 1999: "I had in mind this kid who used to stand outside the soundchecks on our first tour... I never spoke to him. I remember that the last time I saw him I just left him standing in the snow, I never had anything to say to him. I kind of wrote this for him, so, in the unlikely event that you're watching this, I did think about you."

    Burnin' Down the Spark Lyrics

    Standing in the crowds
    Lost out in the street
    Loving the chaos
With my heart down at my feet

Taking every step like it's my very last
    Looking round the corners
    Searching through the glass
    For a glimpse of you
    Eyes of shining blue
All these memories of you come to haunt me
    They come to haunt me

    Taste the stinging rain
    Falling on my tongue
    Hanging on your words
    Cherish every one
Can't bring you back no matter what I say
Driving in my car just to drive away
    Hear the tires spin
    Round and round again
All these memories still come to haunt me
    They come to haunt me

The city sleepin' cross the river
I'm up alone burning down the spark
Well I wonder where you are tonight
And how far you drifted out there, out there in the dark

    Wind at my window
    Rattling the door
    Pounding on my heart
    Like it's never done before
Still I wonder if it could be these memories
No matter how I try they never let me be
    Always find a way
    Calling out your name
All these memories of you stay and haunt me
    Mmh come to haunt me
    Mmh they still haunt me
Oh they come and haunt me

    Burnin' Down the Spark
  • This song was written by Joey Burns, who is the frontman for the Tucson band Calexico. In 2000, Calexico recorded a song Burns wrote called "Ballad of Cable Hogue," which was titled after a 1970 film of that name. Shortly thereafter, they met Lee Hazlewood, who told them the song reminded him of a duet he did with Nancy Sinatra called "Summer Wine."

A few years later, Burns learned that Nancy was looking for songs for her 2004 album, so he wrote "Burnin' Down the Spark" for her. He wrote the song in New York City on the Fourth of July, 2003. Burns put himself in Nancy's mindset, thinking about what it would be like looking over a city her father influenced in so many ways.

"It's about chasing down that love you have for someone," Burns told us. "The only thing Nancy said was, 'Can you re-record it and I'll sing on top of it? Can you transpose it to a different key?' And I said, 'No problem.' So it was so easy to work with her. And then a couple of years later we were performing at The Getty Museum in Los Angeles and she came to the show. She loved it and we breakfast together - she bought the whole band breakfast. It was with her daughter A.J. It was really cool. So it was a very special time to get to meet her and since then I've followed what she's been doing. She's great. She's very true to some of her causes, like performing for troops and veterans of the Vietnam War. That's something I really admire about someone of that caliber: she's still really connected and grounded."

    King for a Day Lyrics

Started at the age of four
My mother went to the grocery store
Went sneaking through her bedroom door
To find something in a size four

Sugar and spice and everything nice
    Wasn't made for only girls
GI Joe in panty hose is making room
    For the one and only

King for a Day, princess by dawn
King for a day in a leather thong
King for a day, princess by dawn
Just wait 'til all the guys get a load of me

My daddy threw me in therapy
He thinks I'm not a real man
Who put the drag in the drag queen
Don't knock it until you tried it

Sugar and spice and everything nice
    Wasn't made for only girls
GI Joe in panty hose is making room
    For the one and only

King for a day, princess by dawn
King for a day in a leather thong
King for a day, princess by dawn

    Slowness Lyrics

    Miles of highway poppies
A stretch of maybe flowers past Signal Hill away
    We were parked and searching
For a hubcap rolling into the fields of thorn

Although we couldn't see a thing that night
And the stars in their Slowness
And their slowness took us by surprise

If I never told you how you helped to rescue
    The car and all inside
    Remember roads were steep and
You and I went sliding down the grade from Gate's Pass

You asleep and me behind the wheel
    Hovering in, in that slowness
And that slowness has never gone away

Although we couldn't see a thing that night
And the stars still shone and the stars still shone
    And the stars still shone

In their slowness, in their slowness

    Slowness
  • Written by Calexico lead singer Joey Burns, "Slowness" contains references to their home base of Tucson, Arizona. Gates Pass is a road known for its scenic views, and Signal Hill is a trail in Saguaro National Park. The song is about two people coming together from far away.
  • This song had the honor of being played in space. Calexico's congresswoman at the time, Gabrielle Giffords, is a big fan of the band, so when her husband Mark Kelly was aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 2008, she had NASA play their song "Crystal Frontier" as his wake-up call.

In early 2011, Giffords was shot in the head by a lunatic gunman, but survived. A few months later, when Kelly returned to space aboard the Shuttle Endeavour, Giffords was recovering so Kelly asked the band for a song to play. They picked "Slowness" - Joey Burns told us why: "It was more mellow, more romantic. It's a song that points out places in the Southwest. There's a clip on YouTube somewhere . It's a video of NASA control, and the operator is on with Mark up in space and you hear this song bouncing back through the wireless speakers and it's fantastic, beautiful. It's got this haunting quality to it, which is something I like in some of our music – not all of it – but some of it. That kind of melancholic or bittersweet sound. It fits in that genre that's hard to pinpoint because so many different cultures and countries tap into a similar vibe. They all have different names for it. I guess ours in melancholy."

    She'll make ya breakfast

    She don't use cheese

    She Don't Use Jelly
  • The song is knows for it's chorus, "She uses Vaseline," but it's better for legal and marketing purposes to keep brand names out of song titles, as some radio stations won't play them. Vaseline is a kind of petroleum jelly often used as a personal lubricant. Lead singer Wayne Coyne explained the line to Rolling Stone: "We used to do these silly experiments: You drink out of a glass of water, then you spit into the water and drink it. There would be this disconnect of, 'Christ, I'm swallowing my own spit!' So I took that a little bit further. A lot of times people will use Vaseline on their lips because they don't have lip balm, but the idea of putting it on food and eating it repels them."
  • This single was the Lips' only mainstream hit in the US. They had existed for 10 years as a post-punk/psychedelic band out of Oklahoma before releasing it. Since 1993, the Lips' albums The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots have received a great deal of critical acclaim, but have produced no hit singles in the States.
  • Wayne Coyne told Uncut magazine June 2008 about this track: "When we recorded 'She Don't Use Jelly' we knew we were making something special. Whatever the absurdness of it, you could understand that I'm talking about toast and Vaseline, and it had some kind of innocent little sexual thing that ran through the whole song. That was kind of cool for us because up until then all of our songs were so asexual. I think we felt that there was this sort of the Guns 'N' Roses mentality to Rock 'n' roll, and we were something different. We really had a lot of area to explore that didn't include a bunch of naked women- but here we felt like, 'Oh, what the f--k, let's go for it.'"

There's a message floatin' in the air.
    Crazy Horses ridin' everywhere.
    It's a warning, it's in every tongue.
Gotta stop them crazy horses on the run.

    [Chorus]
What a show, there they go smokin' up the sky, yeah.
Crazy horses all got riders, and they're you and I.
    Crazy horses
    Crazy horses
    Crazy horses

Never stop and they never die.
They just keep on puffin' how they multiply.
Crazy horses, will they never halt?
If they keep on movin' then it's all our fault.

    [Chorus]

So take a good look around,
See what they've done, what they've done,
    They've done,
    They've done,
    They've done,
    They've done.

  • This was written by Alan, Merrill and Wayne Osmond. They were the oldest of the group, who were all fathers.
  • This song was originally banned in South Africa because "horses" is a slang term for heroin there, so "crazy horses" was thought to be referring to drugs.

    Adew Adew Le Company
  • This song was written by Henry VIII, King of England, and appears in his own songbook - which includes many songs by other composers.

According to John Stevens in Music At The Court of Henry VIII, it was written in honour of Henry's firstborn son in January/February 1511.

Alas, this joy was shortlived. Henry was married no less than six times; his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was the widow of Henry's elder brother, Arthur, who died April 2, 1502 aged only 15. At that time, arranged marriages were common amongst royalty and other powerful families, and some parties were betrothed very young. Henry was five years Catherine's junior, and appears from an early age to have wanted a son and heir. Catherine was unable to provide him with this; during their marriage she is thought to have fallen pregnant at least six times, but only one child survived: Mary, who was born February 18, 1516. Henry's first son was named after his father but died February 22, 1511 at only 52 days old.

    Teen Angel Lyrics

Teen Angel, teen angel, teen angel, ooh
That fateful night the car was stalled upon the railroad track
I pulled you out and we were safe, but you went running back

Teen angel, can you hear me?
Teen angel, can you see me?
    Are you somewhere up above?
And I am still your own true love?

What was it you were looking for that took your life that night?
They said they found my high school ring clutched in your fingers tight

Teen angel, can you hear me?
Teen angel, can you see me?
    Are you somewhere up above?
And I am still your own true love?

Just sweet sixteen, and now you're gone
    They've taken you away
I'll never kiss your lips again
    They buried you today

Teen angel, can you hear me?
Teen angel, can you see me?
    Are you somewhere up above?
And I am still your own true love?

    Teen Angel
  • This was written by Mark's sister Jeannie, who was a member with her two sisters of the vocal group The Dinning Sisters. It was about the tragic death of the narrator's girlfriend who stalls her car on a railway track.
  • In the UK, BBC DJs refused to play this as it was too morbid, so it only reached #37 in the British charts.
  • Mark Dinning was born on August 17, 1933 in Drury, Oklahoma. He learned to play the guitar at the age of 17 and he gained a contract with MGM in 1957. This was his one and only hit in both the UK and US. In 1986 he died of a heart attack.
  • Sha-Na-Na played this at Woodstock in 1969.
  • The Canadian group Wednesday recorded a version of this song for their album Canadian Mint that is both a cover and a sequel to the Mark Dinning version, notable for a change in lyrics in which the person being sung about isn't the dead girl but her boyfriend who has died and is now reunited with Teen Angel.

Where Is My Sunday Potato? Lyrics

    Where Is My Sunday Potato?
  • As might be suspected from the title, this is a novelty song, but one that, curiously, fell foul of the censor.

To understand why, it must be remembered that during and for some time after the Second World War, there was food rationing in Britain. The song was composed by George Gee with words by Gee and Harris Weston; it was published by Arcadia Music.

The story behind it is related by Robert V. Kenny in the Summer 2013 issue of The Call Boy, the quarterly journal of the British Music Hall Society. The song was first performed publicly by Arthur Lucan in Babes In The Wood at the Bristol Hippodrome during the 1947-8 season.

Lucan was part of a comedy duo Lucan & McShane, although with the passage of time they don't seem so funny. "Where Is My Sunday Potato?" is said to be a topical comedy hit that was a "huge success" in over fifty pantomimes, and to be "the inevitable food-chorus song".

That may well be, but in December 1947 the BBC objected to it on political grounds. In those days there was no independent radio, so the BBC's word was law. It was though cleared for broadcast the following month. It remains to be seen if it could also have been considered a protest song as suggested. It may be too that a higher power didn't think much of it because Lucan's rendition is said to have come to an abrupt end on February 16, 1948 when the Bristol Hippodrome was devastated by a "mysterious backstage fire" which kept it closed for almost a year.

Take the time to make some sense
Of what you want to say
And cast your words away upon the waves

And sail them home with acquiesce
On a ship of hope today
And as they land upon the shore
Tell them not to fear no more
Say it loud, and sing it proud today

And then dance if you wanna dance
    Please brother take a chance
    You know they're gonna go
    Which way they wanna go
All we know is that we don't
    Know how it's gonna be
    Please brother let it be
    Life on the other hand
    Won't make us understand
We're all part of The Masterplan

Say it loud and sing it proud today

I'm not saying right is wrong
It's up to us to make
The best of all the things
    That come our way

'cause everything that's been has passed
The answer's in the looking glass
There's four and twenty million doors
    On life's endless corridor
Say it loud and sing it proud today

We'll dance if they wanna dance
    Please brother take a chance
    You know they're gonna go

    The Masterplan
  • This song, written in a Japanese hotel room, is considered by Noel Gallagher and fans alike to be one of his best works. The lyrics were inspired by the hotel's long corridor and what Gallagher described as a "Good, relaxing smoke." When asked about what the song meant to him, Noel responded: "To me this sums up your journey through life. All we know is that we don't know."
  • At the end of this song you can hear in a high-pitch voice a vocal from The Beatles song "Octopus's Garden." The voice is Noel Gallagher.
  • This was originally a B-Side. It was the fourth track on the CD version of the "Wonderwall" single released in October 1995, three years before the The Masterplan album was released with the rest of Oasis best B-Sides.
  • Though many have speculated that the song's references to "Brother" ("Please, brother, let it be") were directed at Liam Gallagher, Noel denies this, saying: "We're all brothers and sisters."
  • Performing on this track are: Steve Sidwell, Derek Watkins and John Barclay on trumpets, Phil Todd and Dave Bishop on tenor sax, Gavyn Wright, Wilf Gibson, Perry Montague Mason and Vaughan Armon on violins, George Robertson and Bill Hawkes on viola, and Tony Pleeth and Paul Klegg on cello. The brass and strings were arranged by Nick Ingham and Noel Gallagher.

  • This song - if it can be called that - was written to expose the scam of fake fans, fake likes and astronomically inflated hits on social media sites. It appears to have been a collaborative effort by a team put together by documentary maker Chris Morris for the Channel 4 Dispatches series in the UK. It remains to be seen if any of its contributors would want a writing credit. The team began writing the "song" at 3pm and recorded it an hour later. In less than five months it ran up over a hundred thousand hits on YouTube, and around another four thousand in less than two weeks after the documentary was screened.
