Intro Lyrics

Somebody's pulling me closer to the ground
I ain't panicked, I been here before
Seems like only yesterday when I got up on that stage
In front of that crowd
And showed them who was who, and what was what
Man look at these suckers
I ain't no rapper, I'm a hustler
It just so happens that I know how to rap
Okay, I'm reloaded!

I did it again niggas
Fucked up, right? I know
I know what y'all niggas asking yourself
Is he gonna ever fall off?
No

A lot of speculation
On the monies I've made, honeys I've slayed
How is he for real? Is that nigga really paid?
Hustlers I've met or, dealt with direct
Is it true he slay the beef and slept with a tech?
What's the position you hold? Can you really match
A triple platinum artist buck by buck by only a single goin gold?
Roc-A-Fella ship fold, and you're left out in the cold
Is it back to charging motherfuckers 11 for an O
For the millionth time askin me
Questions like Wendy Williams, harassing me
Then get upset when I catch feelings
Can I get a minute to breathe? And in that minute you leave
While I'm looking at my Rol' ice spinning on my sleeve
Uh, nice watch, do you really have a spot?
Like you said in Friend or Foe and if so, what block?
What you doing in L.A., with Filipinos and ese's
Latinos and Cheve's, down by Pico with Frederico
I answer all your questions but then y'all got to go
Now the question I ask you is how bad you want to know? blow!

Roc-A-Fella y'all, uh
Know my style

Motherfuckers can't rhyme no more, bout crime no more
Til I'm no more, cause I'm so raw
My flow expose holes that they find in yours
Wasn't for me, niggas still be dying for whores
But I hate when a nigga sit back, admiring yours
Young blood you better get that, we frying baccars
Niggaz don't want to be confined to riding the iron horse
And don't listen to the rappers, they dying to floss
I used to be O.T., applying the force
Shoot up the whole block, then the iron I toss
Come back with the click playing Diana Ross
I'm the boss and this is how it's gonna be
Burnt the turnpike, wild miles on the V
I got mouths to feed till they put flowers on me
And kiss my cold cheek, chicks crying like I was Cochise
Tombstone read 'He Was Holdin No Leaks'
Started from the crack game and then so sweet
Freaked it to the rap game, Jigga the old-G
On MTV, telling em how I sold D
And used to back work up out of apartment 4-B
Me and my homie, started out coldies
Picked the mailbox lock cause I ain't have no key
Had the cable with the anchor when Jaz made 'Sophie'
Then I went low key, but now I'm back it's on
Motherfuckers
Jigga, uh-huh, yeah
Roc-A-Fella y'all
Uhh, feel this

Intro
  • This track introduces American Gangster, Jay-Z's first concept album, which was inspired by the 2007 crime movie of the same name. The rapper had been invited to an advanced screening of the film and it had a profound resonance on him; Hova would play it on the monitors above the recording booth to keep him inspired.
  • The song features dialogue excerpts from the American Gangster movie, spoken by Denzel Washington.
  • This was co-produced by British actor Idris Elba, whose roles include Russell "Stringer" Bell in HBO's The Wire and Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Elba started out working as a DJ in clubs in the 1990s and is also known as Driis or Big Driis to his rapper and DJ friends.

I wrote short stories until I was about 13 and then messed around with songwriting until I got a bit better," Yelich-O'Connor, told MTV News "[My first song] was called 'Dope Ghost.' I had just watched that Larry Clark movie Kids and I thought it was rad. I think it was poking fun at this girl in my year who was kind of going off the rails."

My throat quits when I try to say
How I long for the day
How I wish there was a way
    I could see you again

I wither next to my thorns
I thread my tongue through the horn
Arm in arm we are born
Arm in arm to the end

    Side streets I have worn
    Through late summer storms
    I should have told you
    I could live without you
    But I don’t want to

My heart lifts when I sing
    The joy I can bring
    Doesn’t mean a thing
I want to see you again

I wither next to my thorns
I thread my tongue through the horn
Arm in arm in arm we are born
Arm in arm to the end

    Jesus Wept
  • This is one of three songs on One True Vine that was written by the album's producer and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. Staples told Mojo magazine the story behind the song: "Tweedy had the track," she recalled, "and I said. 'You've got to write lyrics for it.' When we sat at the (family) table for dinner my father would bless the food then one of us would say the verse and my verse was 'Jesus wept.'"

The song title is a reference to the Gospel of John 11 v 35, where Jesus cried openly alongside others over the passing of his friend Lazarus, before raising him from the dead. "Jesus wept" is the shortest verse in the Bible.
  • Staples recalled to The Music.com the first time that Tweedy played her this song: "I listened to 'Jesus Wept'," she said, "I was sitting there on the couch and tears were just streaming down my face. Tweedy looked over 'Mavis, are you crying?' and I said 'Tweedy, you're not supposed to be looking at me!'. He said 'Oh Mavis, I'm sorry' but I said 'That's just the way this song is hitting me. But you might have to change the title to Mavis Wept."

Free, that's all that she could bleed
    That's why she'll never stay
White, bare naked in the night
    And lookin' for some play
Just another girl that wants to rule the world
    Any time or place
And when she gets into your head
You know she's there to stay

    You want it
    She's got it
Molly's Chambers gonna change your mind
    She's got your
    Your pistol
Molly's Chambers gonna change your mind

Slow, she's burnin' in your soul
    With whispers in your ear
It's okay I'll give it anyway
Just get me out of here
You'll plead, you'll get down on your knees
    For just another taste
And when you think she's let you in
    That's when she fades away

    You want it
    She's got it
Molly's Chambers gonna change your mind
    She's got your
    Your pistol
Molly's Chambers gonna change your mind
Molly's Chambers gonna change your mind

    Molly's Chambers
  • This song is about a girl that is very attractive and can make any man drop to his knees and worship her. She can be a tease: "And when you think she's let you in that's when she fades away." And if you're thinking about abstaining from sex, she'll break your will: "Molly's Chambers goin' change your mind."
  • The title comes from a line in the Thin Lizzy version of "Whiskey In A Jar": "Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber."

"We wrote around that, making it about this girl who had this secret power that would take you over," Caleb Followill told Entertainment Weekly.

    Reach Out Richard Lyrics

Richard, hello, I know it's 4am on New Years Day
I never made it home last night, alright
A minor so they dropped the charge and I'll be out today
I know that that won't make it right
It's never black and white but

Richard you taught me all I need to know
But there's some things you can't prepare for
    All I ever wanna do
Is be as good a man as you

    So don't you be concerned
    (The kid's alright)
    I gotta live and learn
    (The kid's alright)
I know that you will see
    (The kid's alright)
    I'll find my way eventually

Richard, your tears fall on the wheel as you wipe them away
I've never seen you so far gone, along
The snow is tumbling, as you're wondering what you didn't say
When I'm the one who got it wrong
I tried to keep you calm cause

Richard you showed me what was wrong and right
But now I gotta live my own life
I will fall along the way
But I'll remember what you say

    So don't you be concerned
    (The kid's alright)
    I gotta live and learn
    (The kid's alright)
I know that you will see
    (The kid's alright)
    I'll find my way eventually

    Woah woah
    Reach out, Richard
    Woah woah
    Reach out

I know you see yourself inside my eyes
Richard don't worry 'cause the kid's alright
    I gotta live and learn

Richard you barely made it out of school
But look at everything you been through
Apples fall right from the tree
As long as you are here for me

    I'll never be concerned
    (The kid's alright)
    I gotta live and learn
    (The kid's alright)
I know that you will see
    (The kid's alright)
    I'll find my way eventually

    So don't you be concerned
    (The kid's alright)
    I gotta live and learn
    (The kid's alright)
I know that you will see
    (The kid's alright)
    I'll find my way eventually

  • Hawthorne sings about his father on this Pharrell Williams produced track. He described it to Radio.com as "by far the hardest song [I've] ever had to write." Hawthorne added: "I have to thank Pharrell Williams for pushing me to get the whole story out. That was a toughie for me. It's a very emotional story. Richard is my dad. I still tear up thinking about that song sometimes, it's a tough one. It was so close to me that I didn't even know if I could put it on the album. Pharrell called me every day and said, 'You have to put that song on the album.' I caved and put it on there and I'm glad I did."

    Cinnamon Girl Lyrics

As war drums beat in Babylon
    Cinnamon Girl starts to pray
I've never heard a prayer like this 1
    Never before that day

Tearful words of love for people she had never met before
Asking God to grant them mercy in this face of a holy war

    Cinnamon Girl

    Cinnamon Girl of mixed heritage
Never knew the meaning of color lines
Nine one one turned that all around
When she got accused of this crime

So began the mass illusion, war on terror alibi
What's the use when the god of confusion keeps on telling the same lie?

    Cinnamon Girl

Don't cry, don't shed no tears
1 night won't make us feel
Cause we know how this movie's ending

    Cinnamon Girl

As war drums beat in Babylon
And scorch the blood red sky
    Militants bomb the foreign gun
    Both sides truly die

Cinnamon girl opens the book she knows will settle all the scores
Then she prays after the war that there will not be anymore

    Cinnamon Girl
  • This song has heavy religious undertones. Since Prince was a member of the Jehovah's Witness religion, his writing was influenced by his belief system.

"The god of confusion" refers to the JWs belief in Satan as the devil. The lyric, "Don't cry, don't shed no tears... cause we know how this movie's ending" refers to an Armageddon the JWs believe will occur. At the end of the song, when "the girl opens the books she knows will settle all the scores," that book is the Bible.

Prince embraced his new religion after becoming friends with former Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham, who was a Jehovah's Witness.
  • Prince was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for this song at the 2005 Grammy Awards but lost to John Mayer's "Daughters."
  • Aside from its title, this song has no connection to Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl."
  • There was a swirl of controversy around the music video for this song, which features actress Keisha Castle-Hughes as a Muslim girl who faces extreme prejudice after the September 11 attacks on the US and dreams of becoming a terrorist herself.

    Not a Bad Man Lyrics

I am Not a Bad Man
    I want you to know
    I signed up when I was 19
    Now 24 years old

There’s ghosts that follow me around
    Things I’ve seen and did
But I am not a bad man
    Just an American kid

I bet you see a stranger
    When you look at me
When I look in the mirror
    I know that’s what I see

Got some pills to get my head right
But they don’t work so well
So I drank a little more tonight
And here is where I fell

I bet you see a stranger
    When you look at me
When I look in the mirror
    I know that’s what I see

I just want a little sleep now
A sleep that’s silent as snow
But I am not a bad man
I just wanted you to know

    Not a Bad Man
  • The American Kid album deals with death in a number of ways. This song tells the story of a young soldier who is sent to fight in Iraq. He makes it back to America, but is traumatized by what he saw there.

Griffin explained the song's backstory to The Daily Telegraph: "There was a marine who had returned home from Iraq to Austin, Texas, where I live," she said. "A lot of kids got lured in by the marketing campaign and joined up and they weren't really sure who they were fighting. It was after 9/11 and the Twin Towers had come down and these boys were going to go to fight. For me, that was a very terrifying time to be in America and to be an American. Lots of our soldiers came home really damaged after they realised they were harming people they didn't know."

"I read a story in a paper about a family who were trying to get a young family member out of the military and get him some mental health care. That didn't prove possible and he ended up dead and it wasn't clear whether it was a suicide. So I wrote the song to get inside that kid, if I could."
  • This song is one of the most powerful songs that she has written against war, telling the story of a soldier who becomes the product of a war far more contemporary than the one her father had fought in: World War II.

The title says something about who the man was and who many soldiers of later times represent. They are not bad men, but are being forced to fight unjust wars, often because they signed up without understanding the consequences.

    I think I'm falling
    In love again
When I get that crazy feeling, I know
    I'm in trouble again
    I'm in trouble

    'Cause you're a rambler and a gambler
    And a sweet-taIking-ladies man
    And you love your lovin'
But not like you love your freedom

    Help me
    I think I'm falling
    In love too fast
It's got me hoping for the future
    And worrying about the past
'Cause I've seen some hot hot blazes
Come down to smoke and ash
    We love our lovin'

But not like we love our freedom
    Didn't it feel good
    We were sitting there talking
    Or lying there not talking
    Didn't it feel good
    You dance with the lady
With the hole in her stocking

    Didn't it feel good
    Didn't it feel good
    Help me
    I think I'm falling
    In love with you

Are you going to let me go there by myself
That's such a lonely thing to do
    Both of us flirting around

    Help Me
  • In this song, Mitchell sings about a guy she's falling in love with while at the same time knowing the relationship is doomed, as he is "a rambler and a gambler" who loves his freedom. Mitchell never revealed the identity of this person (if any - she says that not all her songs are autobiographical), but the two prime candidates would be Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey, both of whom she dated in the early '70s.
  • Mitchell used jazz musicians to back her on the Court And Spark album after initial attempts to play it with the popular Los Angeles session players that backed the likes of James Taylor and Warren Zevon failed. She got the sound she was looking for in members of the band L.A. Express, which included guitarist Larry Carlton and drummer John Guerin. During the sessions, Mitchell became romantically involved with Guerin.
  • Released as the first single from the album, "Help Me" became Mitchell's biggest hit, going to #7 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart - her only #1 on that tally.
  • Mandy Moore performed this song for her Tangled audition. Alan Menken composed the music for the 2010 Disney animated film and drew inspiration from '60s folk-rock. With her flowing locks and longing for freedom, the heroine Rapunzel immediately brought Mitchell to mind.

    Axis
  • This largely instrumental banger was released as the first single from The Pet Shop Boys' twelfth album, Electric. It was debuted on March 22, 2013 at the Cumbre Tajín festival in Veracruz, Mexico and released digitally on May 1, 2013.
  • An extremely negative review of the Pet Shop Boys previous album, Elysium, had an incalculable effect on Electric. "They said they wanted more banging and more strobes," Chris Lowe told Q magazine. So we thought, 'Well, that's what you're going to get, then.'"
  • The Pet Shop duo employed Stuart Price, best known for his work with Madonna and The Killers, to produce Electric. "It was a quick, instinctive record to make," Price said. "But I think that's because a record normally sounds like the time you have making it and we had a lot of fun doing it."
  • The song was inspired by an Italian Disco night in Berlin that the Pet Shop duo attended. Chris Lowe told Electronic Beats magazine that the pair, "got back and felt inspired by the music we'd been listening to—nothing specific, but just the feeling of it all."

Tennant added "I think it was this track that might have made us decide to do a separate dance album — 'cause this was never going to go on Elysium. There was no option of that at all."
  • This song was inspired by Madonna. Neil Tennant laughed to The Sun: "Axis had a rubbish vocal at first. Then I pretended to be Madonna on 'Erotica' and said it in an American accent. Now when I hear the voice at the start of the show, I don't think of it as me but my alter-ego, 'The Electric voice'."
  • This was titled various times "Electric" and "Turn it On", before the Pet Shop Boys settled on "Axis."
  • Producer Stuart Price told Electronic Beats magazine: "The demo always had the direction and the atmosphere. I sort of always thought it had this sort of futuristic, sort of mystical 'City in the Skies' feel to it, and that's what I loved about it. It was sort of like where Techno met Disco… and that's always what it felt like, so when we were working on it in the studio I think it was just putting it into a place where it could be played in a DJ set now."

"The BCS-3 is that box you always see Eno with in a Roxy Music video, or on a Bowie record," he continued. "And there's not really anyone alive that can play it, but anyone can sort of stand there and just push it and it will do something. So all this, it's just the sound of those boxes—plus disco bells, equals 'Axis.'"

  • Various quotes from The Used regarding this song: "This is the song that first attracted John Feldmann to our band. We were sending him mp3s of our songs as we wrote them. This is the one that really stood out to him and made him decide to produce our band."
"This is a song about being proud of what we were doing for once and and loving music to the fullest. The idea actually came from some sheet music. A box full of sharp objects represents a measure of time on paper with quarter notes. We all thought that it was a very strong metaphor."
"It's the song that we really realized that working together and having the different influences we all have could work really good for us."
"We played it at our first show ever back in Provo and we had 3 ballerinas dancing on stage during it. It was beautiful, they were all in black and had pale face makeup on. it was amazing, but some of the kids didn't seem to really get it."
  • The Used bassist Jeph Howard tells us that "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" is probably his favorite song by the band. Howard explains: "It's still a pretty strong song. I think it's just the mental area we were in during that first record. It's like it was experimental."
  • Along with "Buried Myself Alive," this is one of the early songs The Used continued to play in their live shows 10 years later. The decision on what songs to include in the shows is difficult for the band. Bassist Jeph Howard says: "It's kind of hard when you're touring and you only play a certain amount of time. You only get like an hour and a half and sometimes like a half hour. Trying to throw in five and a half records into that gets a little difficult."
