Stay With Me

The third single from In the Lonely Hour, this was played for the first time during the March 25, 2014 episode of Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show at 7:30 p.m. The song was released to iTunes on May 18th alongside remixes from Darkchild, FX and Wilfred Giroux.

In the Lonely Hour finds Smith tackling his unsuccessful love life. This track finds him singing about a person he fell for one night, but who doesn't return the same sentiment. He told Rolling Stone: "I deal with all the different aspects of loneliness."

Smith later admitted that the person he is singing about throughout this song and much of the In the Lonely Hour album is a man. He waited to come out as gay because he didn't want it to influence how listeners perceived his music. To his relief, there was very little reaction to his admission - it simply didn't matter to most people.

Smith wrote this with James Napier and William Phillips. "The song just flowed out of us so naturally," Smith told NME, adding that it only took about 30 - 40 minutes to write.

Napier, also known as Jimmy Napes, co-wrote the Clean Bandit song "Rather Be" and the Naughty Boy tune "La La La," which features Smith.

Phillips is better known as "Tourist," a popular DJ/producer from Brighton. His EP Patterns was released in 2014.

Smith wrote and recorded the original demo of this song with it's co-writer Jimmy Napes. At first, the song had just a verse and the chorus, and was under two minutes long. An executive at Smith's label Capitol Records named Nick Raphael arranged for Smith and Napes to work with veteran producer Steve Fitzmaurice, whose name shows up in the credits for albums by Seal, Rod Stewart and Tina Turner.

On June 20, 2013, Fitzmaurice joined the pair at Napes' studio, where they beefed up the song with an organ riff and made some changes to the structure. The next morning, Fitzmaurice made a quick demo mix of the song and left for a gig in India.

In November, Fitzmaurice was called back to the recording sessions, which were now taking place at RAK Studios in London. They recorded a new version of "Stay With Me" using a live band, but found themselves "chasing the demo," meaning they couldn't get it any better than what they had back in June. Fitzmaurice ended up mixing parts of the RAK recording (including the bass, which was played by Jodi Milliner) with pieces of the demo version. Fitzmaurice estimates that about 90% of the song came from the demo, however.

Smith is backed in the video by the London-based Enchorus gospel choir, but this was just for show - the choir didn't sing o the track.

Smith's own layered vocals provide the illusion of a choir in the song. "I layered my voice probably about 20 times. I stood in different parts around the entire room and I would layer my voice more and more and more, harmonizing, all that kind of stuff," he explained to NME.

Everything clicked when he heard the results, which were processed using a variety of panning and echo effects by co-producer Steve Fitzmaurice. "I remember crying because the whole song suddenly made sense," said Smith. "It was like that one touch just turned the song into... it just sounded anthemic."

Smith told 4Music the song "is my attempt at an anthem for the lonely. I wanted to write a song about those moments in the morning after a one night stand."

Smith took over an entire three and a half minute advertising break in a world broadcasting first, and transmitted a live music performance of this song to a sold-out crowd at London's Roundhouse. The live commercial break aired on Channel 4 at approximately 22.45 during Alan Carr: Chatty Man.

A remix by Darkchild featuring a vocal contribution by Mary J. Blige was released on June 2, 2014. "Working with Mary J. Blige is one of the biggest highlights of my career so far," said Smith. "I remember holding her album in my hands in the car when I was a young boy. To meet your idols is a magical thing, but to work with them is truly a dream come true."

"I'm so honored to have had the chance to work with Sam Smith," said Blige. "Sam's true soulful voice… is the first of this kind I have heard since Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson and all the great soulful male voices from the '80s. I'm completely blown away by his talent, soul and the sincerity."

This wasn't the first time that Smith and Blige have worked together. The pair were special guest performers during Disclosure's show at New York's Terminal 5 in January 2014. (Blige previously supplied guest vocals on Disclosure's "F For You.")

In the Lonely Hour sold 166,000 copies in its initial week in the US. This was more than any other debut album by a UK male artist in its first seven days since Soundscan started tracking sales in 1991.

Smith performed the song along with "Lay Me Down" during his debut appearance on the March 29, 2014 episode of Saturday Night Live. It was a breakthrough performance for Smith, but it almost didn't happen. "I tried to beg my managers and my team to not do SNL because I thought it was way too early," he told Entertainment Weekly.

The song runs just 2:52, which informed the approach for the entire album, whose 10 tracks total just 32:47.

By keeping the songs short, Smith and his producers were able to keep them simple and make his vocals the focal point.

Speaking with On Air with Ryan Seacrest's Tanya Rad, Smith discussed the rawness of the song. "I'm an emotional guy and I think unlike a lot of men in the industry and in music, I'm willing to show that emotional side," he said. "I don't have an bravado to put in front, and I'm just showing my raw self."

The drums on this song are the same ones recorded at the original demo session. Co-producer Jimmy Napes played them and put them on a loop. It was a bare-bones recording done with just one overhead microphone, but it ended up suiting the song perfectly, thanks to its imperfection.

"The loop wasn't quite right, it wasn't tied to a grid, and so the timing was slightly off," the other producer Steve Fitzmaurice told Sound on Sound. "The other instruments reacted to this, and altogether this created something magical that we couldn't get in any other way. Many people tried to put different drums on the track, and I even tried to correct the loop and fit it to a grid, and overdubbed drums to that. But when I listened to it a few days later, I immediately realized that it was no good and I took it all off again."

There is no guitar on this song - the instrumentation is just piano, bass, a drum loop, tambourine, organ and strings (which were overdubbed later).

This won Best Song at the 2014 MOBO Awards. Smith was also triumphant in the Best R&B/Soul Act, Best Male, Best Album categories at the ceremony, which celebrates Music of Black Origin.

This was USA Today's Song of the Year for 2014. They said: "'Stay With Me's gospel-tinged piano and Smith's sweet, heart-tugging falsetto struck a chord of universal yearning, like the living embodiment of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' Same Love. A chorus of voices joined him on the refrain, driving home his plea, as though their presence might make him feel less alone."

Following speculation that the piano melody resembles Tom Petty's 1989 single "I Won't Back Down," Petty and co-writer Jeff Lynne were added to the publishing on the tune in January 2015. According to reports, Smith's attorneys agreed to pay Petty and Lynne a 12.5 percent royalty credit on the song.

Both Smith and Petty stated that the agreement was amicable, and no lawsuit was ever threatened. "All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen," said Petty. "Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam's people were very understanding."

This won for Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 2015 Grammy Awards. Smith performed the song at the ceremony, where he also won for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. Mary J. Blige joined him on stage for the second verse and duetted with him for the rest of the performance.

When Smith collected his trophy for Record of the Year, he said, "I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart, because you got me four Grammys."

William Phillips explained to Billboard magazine how he ended up co-penning this song. "I had been writing music as Tourist for about three years," he said. "Someone wanted to manage me, and it turned out the people who wanted to manage me also managed Sam. They were like, 'Before we manage you, why don't we do some sessions? We've got this guy Sam Smith and this guy Jimmy [Napes].'"

"So we sat in a session," Phillips continued. "I'd written with Jimmy a couple of times before I met Sam. Jimmy helped me write my third Tourist EP, and we really bonded over that. I got put in the studio with Sam and Jimmy - we didn't have any expectations. We just wanted to meet each other. Did ['Stay With Me'] in about half an hour."

Phillips was tinkling the ivories when the trio penned the song. "I've always played the piano," he told MTV News. "I taught myself how to play the piano and the piano is kind of what I do. That's what I did in that session; I had these three chords that I thought were nice. We didn't really sit down to write a specific sentiment. We just felt what was right."

In The Lonely Hour broke the record for the longest unbroken run of a debut album in the UK Top 10. The LP it gazumped was Emeli Sandé's first set, Our Version Of Events, which logged 66 consecutive weeks in the top tier.

This was named Song of the Year at the 2015 BMI Awards. The honor is given to the most-performed song of the previous year by UK or European writers in the BMI catalogue on US radio and television.

This song finds Cole reflecting on some of the mistakes he's made during his life that have ruined some of his most valuable relationships. The rapper acknowledges that he hasn't been the best servant, but he remains faithful to God and knows that his mom has 'apparently' always been rooting for him.

A guilty Cole apologizes in the first verse to his mom, Kay Cole, for leaving her to deal with foreclosure at his childhood home, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, in North Carolina, while he was away chasing girls and partying at New York's St. John's University. U2 kick off their Songs of Innocence album with this tribute to one of their earliest influences, the late Ramones vocalist Joey Ramone. "I found my voice through Joey Ramone," Bono told Rolling Stone, "because I wasn't the obvious punk-rock singer, or even rock singer. I sang like a girl - which I'm into now, but when I was 17 or 18, I wasn't sure. And I heard Joey Ramone, who sang like a girl, and that was my way in."

U2 surprised the music world on September 9, 2014 when it was announced at an Apple event that Songs of Innocence would be made available for free to anyone with an iTunes account until its physical release on October 13, 2014. "The most personal album we've written could be shared with half a billion people - by hitting send," Bono said. "If only songwriting was that easy."

The surprise announcement was compared to Beyoncé, who dropped her self-titled album without warning on iTunes in December 2013. Other acts who have used unusual launch strategies for their albums include Radiohead who initially released In Rainbows in 2007 as a pay-what-you-want download, and Prince, who has allowed CDs to be given away with newspapers.

Joey's brother, Mickey Leigh, worked with Apple to gain approval for the use of the late Ramones singer's image without knowing exactly what it was being used for. He told MTV News, "It made me feel so good… [When I] finally found out what it was all about, my jaw dropped right away."

Leigh first heard song at a friend's house. "I had to keep my heart going there, it's so beautiful," he recalled. "I loved it. It's Bono's interpretation and his spirit, but it also captures Joey's spirit. He described my brother's spirit well. I think he got just what Joey would have wanted out of it."

The last song that Joey Ramone listened to before he died was U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind track "In A Little While."

A number of iTunes account holders were unhappy that Songs of Innocence appeared in their music libraries without having the option to opt-out. Bono apologized during a Facebook Q&A session. "Oops. I'm sorry about that," he said. "I had this beautiful idea and we got carried away with ourselves. Artists are prone to that kind of thing. Drop of megalomania, touch of generosity, dash of self-promotion, and deep fear that these songs that we poured our life into over the last few years mightn't be heard. There's a lot of noise out there. I guess we got a little noisy ourselves to get through it."

According to Apple, within the first month of the release of Songs of Innocence, 81 million users listened to it and 26 million downloaded the entire record.

Songs of Innocence was named Best Album of 2014 by Rolling Stone. They said: "There was no bigger album of 2014 - in terms of surprise, generosity and controversy. Songs of Innocence is also the rebirth of the year."

Barnegat Light, New Jersey native Matt McAndrew has been writing songs in bands since he was a child. He decided whilst at high school that he was going to focus on a music career and graduated from University of the Arts in 2013. McAndrew released his debut solo album View of The Pines on March 1, 2014.

McAndrew's big break came about later in 2014 when he competed in season 7 of The Voice finishing as runner-up. His versions of "Take Me to Church," "The Blower's Daughter," "Make It Rain" and "Lost Stars" all charted in the Hot 100, the latter being a duet with his coach Adam Levine.

This was written in Toronto during October 2014 by Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, Shimon Moore of the rock band Sick Puppies, and Nettwerk One Publishing writer Mike Fiorentino. It was decided it would be a good song for McAndrew to perform during The Voice finale. The song debuted at #14 in the Hot 100, the highest chart position achieved by one of the show's contestants to date.

The song was produced in New York several days before the finale by Sterling Fox (Lana Del Rey's "Video Games," Gym Class Heroes featuring Adam Levine's "Stereo Hearts").

This bouncy hip-pop song finds Azalea letting the world know why she's the hottest female rapper in the game over a stripped back production driven by a retro-induced synth.

The song was premiered on Mistajam's BBC Radio 1Xtra show on February 6, 2014 and released as the fourth single from The New Classic exactly two months later.

Charli XCX joins in with the bragging on the rowdy hook. This was the second breakout hit for the British singer following her contribution to Icona Pop's, "I Love It." "It's been massively different for me, on a personal level and on a Charli XCX level," Charli told Billboard magazine. "With 'I Love It,' there was never a plan for me to go and write for Icona Pop - they were just there, and it happened, and no one really knew what was going on."

"Then it was a bit of a mess that turned into a stressful experience, and something that I didn't really enjoy," she continued. "They were traveling the world and it was great, but I never felt part of that process, partly due to the nature of the song and how it sounds. I never really felt like it was my song."

"With Iggy, it's been the flip side of that," Charli added. "From the start, Iggy has been like, 'This is your song as well as my song,' which I think is very nice of her, and it made me very excited about the song. I feel valued."

This was produced by The Invisible Men (Katy B, Ellie Goulding) with whom Azalea collaborated with on the entire album. Anthony Kilhoffer (Kanye West, Beyoncé) was enlisted to provide the final mix.

The song's music video was directed by Director X (Ciara's "Body Party," Drake's "Started from the Bottom"). The clip pays homage to the classic 1995 film Clueless with Iggy playing Cher and Charli portraying Tai. It was filmed at some of the same locations used in the movie.

The song was Iggy Azalea's first single to reach the Hot 100. The previous female rapper who sent a debut Hot 100 hit into the top 10 was M.I.A., who ascended to #4 with "Paper Planes" in 2008.

When this climbed to #1 on the Hot 100, Azalea's collaboration with Ariana Grande, "Problem," also jumped to #2 on the tally. The Australian rapper became the first act since the Beatles to simultaneously occupy the top two spots with their first Hot 100 hits.

Azalea was the fourth solo female rapper in Billboard's Hot 100 history to have a #1 hit. The previous three were Lauryn Hill who topped the chart with "Doo Wop (That Thing)" in 1998, Lil Kim who hooked up with Christina Aguilera, Mya and Pink on "Lady Marmalade" in 2001 and Shawnna, who reached the summit of the Hot 100 two years later with Ludacris on "Stand Up."

This was originally an unfinished song by Azalea titled "Leave It," which was leaked online on December 5, 2013. The Invisible Men then approached Charli XCX about adding a killer pop hook and Azalea's key line "'Who dat who dat. I-G-G-Y,'" immediately leapt out at her. "I was so into it. I wanted to make it into, like, a 2014 girl power moment," XCX told Billboard magazine. "There aren't enough high-profile female collaborations happening."

Azalea admitted to The Observer that she has "no idea" how her hook-up with Charli XCX came about. "I have no idea how she got on it," she said. "They decided it would be a good idea and I found out later. I thought, she sounds good, let's keep her!"

"Weird Al" Yankovic transformed this song into the anthem of a cocky Mr. Fix-it in "Handy" from his 2014 album, Mandatory Fun.

MTV named this as their best song of 2014. They said: "Combining hip-hop, pop and electronic sounds with verses from the Australian rapper and an infectious hook from Charli XCX, the track became an inescapable smash: It hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100; collected 380 million YouTube views; was performed on TV and at award shows; earned constant radio play; and spawned multiple parodies."

This song was debuted by Nicki Minaj during her performance at the November 9, 2014 MTV European Music Awards, where it was the last part of a medley that also featured her hits "Super Bass" and "Anaconda."

The song features Skylar Grey on the hook. Thinking Out Loud

This soulful song finds Sheeran tipping the hat to his key teenage influence, Van Morrison. "No one's really channeled Van Morrison for a long time," he pointed out to Q magazine. "Everyone always channels, Michael Jackson and the Beatles and Bob Dylan, and I feel like Van Morrison is a key figure in the music that I make."

Sheeran wrote this love song about his girlfriend at the time, Athina Andrelos, who worked for English celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The pair split up in early 2015 after dating for about a year.

Ed Sheeran wrote this with the Bristol singer-songwriter Amy Wadge, whom he previously worked with on his 2010 EP, Songs I Wrote With Amy. Another of their collaborations, "Even My Dad Does Sometimes," can be found on the deluxe version of x.

Sheeran revealed to The Mirror that their song-writing session was held as a favor to his childhood friend to help her deal with financial issues. "[Amy] was going through financial troubles about a year ago," he said. "She drove to my house – my album was nearly done – and she asked if I could put a song from when I was 17 on the deluxe album, so she could get a little bit of money and pay the mortgage and bills and stuff."

"While she was there, we wrote 'Thinking Out Loud'," he added. "Now she never has to worry about money again."

The romantic ballad was the last song that Sheeran wrote for x. He penned it in his kitchen.

The song's music video was directed by Emil Nava, who also filmed the clip for "Sing." The visual features Sheeran and his partner Brittany Cherry ballroom dancing and was shot all at once in 16 mm film. "I wanted the video to be a little different, so I opted for ballroom dancing," he explained when the video was released in October 2014. "I had lessons for five hours a day when I was on my US tour last month."

Brittany Cherry was a contestant on Season 10 of the American TV dance competition So You Think You Can Dance. She is formally trained in ballroom, ballet, jazz, Latin and contemporary dance.

This topped the UK singles charts in its 19th week, after an exhilarating performance of the tune by Sheeran on the X Factor live show. In doing so the song broke the record for the slowest continual climb to #1, overtaking the 16-week ascent of Jennifer Rush's "The Power Of Love" and Celine Dion's "Think Twice."

The song broke the UK record for the most streams in a chart week when it was streamed 1.72 million streams in the week ending November 22, 2014.

The record was broken a month later by Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk," which achieved 2.34 million streams in the pre-Christmas week.

Ed Sheeran wanted to look good for the video, so he lost 35 pounds, mainly by giving up beer.

Sheeran performed this at the Grammy Awards in 2015 backed by John Mayer on guitar, Questlove on drums, and Herbie Hancock on keyboards (Sheeran later joined Electric Light Orchestra on "Mr. Blue Sky"). X was nominated for Album Of The Year, but lost to Morning Phase by Beck.

This spent eight weeks at #2 on the Hot 100 behind Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" without ever reaching the peak position. Missy Elliott's "Work It" and Foreigner's "Waiting For A Girl Like You" hold the joint record for the most weeks peaked at the runner-up spot: ten apiece.

With electronic music ruling the airwaves, this was one of the few hit songs of its time with a guitar solo (played by Chris Leonard), which is near the end of the song in place of a bridge. Running 4:41, it was also very long by 2014 hit song standards, although this extra time makes the song more appealing as a first dance wedding number.

The song made history by becoming the first to spend a full year inside the UK Top 40. Pharrell Williams' "Happy" was the previous record holder, having spent 49 consecutive weeks on the Top 40.

This picked up the award for Song of the Year at the Grammys in 2016. Stevie Wonder presented the award, opening the envelope and reading the card in braille before saying, "I told my daughter Iesha this was a great song when I first heard it, and it has won tonight."

When Sheeran collected the award with Amy Wadge, he said, "We wrote it on a couch in my house after having dinner. Quite odd." He also thanked his parents for flying to the ceremony each of the previous three years, only to see Ed come away empty-handed. When Sheeran turned the mic over to Wadge, however, producers didn't let her get a word in before rolling a Glenn Frey tribute.

I Song Chart

The first single from Kendrick Lamar's third studio album finds him rapping about the need for self-assurance to get by in this world. While premiering the song on LA's Power 106, Lamar explained the confidence boosting anthem was inspired by what he's experienced on the streets of Compton. "It's about self love [which] comes from within," he said. "A lot of cats that go to jail, be in these homes, or in foster homes they grew up in from these hoods, they never had that love within themselves. They thinking they get it from their parents or their mothers or big homies or grandmas, but it starts with themselves and that's why we carry ourselves the way we do."

The track kicks off with a pastor preaching about Kendrick:

The preacher sets the tone for the religious theme of the first verse.

The funk-infused track was produced by Los Angeles musician Rahki, who previously provided the beat for the good kid, m.A.A.d city bonus track "Black Boy Fly."

Rahki's production incorporates a sample from Isley Brothers' 1973 hit "That Lady." Lamar told Flaunt magazine in 2013 that he hadn't been "listening to rap for the last six months. I bought the whole Isley Brothers collection."

Speaking to Zane Lowe on BBC Radio One, Lamar revealed that he turned up at Ronald Isley's house to personally ask permission to sample his song. "I actually had to go to St. Louis and get the blessings from Ronald Isley," he said. "That was a trip. We got in the studio and just vibed and talked about how things were back then and how they are now, and you can actually hear him on the record with a few ad libs that he actually did. We got it on camera and things like that, it's a beautiful thing."

The single's striking cover art shows a Crip and a Blood making "heart" signs with their hands. Speaking with Carson Daly on the Los Angeles radio station KAMP, Lamar explained the message behind the image: "Where I'm from, there's a lot of gang culture and things like that," he said, "so instead of throwing on up gang signs, which we used to, I put a Blood and I put a Crip together and we're throwing up hearts."

Lamar performed the song live for the first time when he made a surprise appearance during the We Day Toronto event at the Air Canada Centre on October 2, 2014.

The feel-good song actually came from a time when Lamar was feeling low. "The record feels great; it feels good," the rapper said during an interview with 93.7 The Beat in Houston. "But it comes from a place of depression. It comes from a place of insecurity. Not only for [other people], but for myself. It's a lot of things that I deal with personally. That you deal with, that everyone in this room deals with."

"So, it touches on so many different things, as far as equality within us as human beings, and accepting one another," K-Dot continued. "People that wanna commit suicide; people that just don't respect themselves or like the way they look, feel, talk, dress, and not accept who they are. We all put on this world to be kings, and walk in his image, and that's how it starts - that song."

Lamar rapped this song on the November 15, 2014 episode of Saturday Night Live. K Dot adopted a wild hair style during his performance with parts of his dreads combed out and he also wore some creepy black contacts, which made his eyes look dilated. This was in homage to Method Man whose Tical album was celebrating its twentieth anniversary.

Kendrick Lamar told Billboard magazine the song's "I love myself" chorus was a self-conscious effort to make himself happier. "That's a psychological trick I wanted to play on myself," he explained. "Now that I put this song in the atmosphere, what's going to happen? I have to perform it every night for the next three years when we go on tour. Every time I'm in a weird mood or something goes on at home that I can't handle, I've got to perform it anyway."

Something in the Water Song Chart

A brand new song included on Carrie Underwood's Greatest Hits: Decade #1 album, this was released as a single on September 29, 2014. "It's really kind of a joyous, uplifting song about changing your life for the better and kind of having that 'a-ha' moment," Underwood explained, "to waking up and your life being different from that moment forward."

Carrie Underwood wrote the song along with Chris DeStefano ("Good Girl") and Brett James ("Cowboy Casanova"). The singer's longtime producer Mark Bright was the guy behind the console.

DeStefano told Taste of Country the song came together easily in one writing session. "Going in to write with Carrie, it's always an adventure, because obviously she can do so many different things stylistically," he said. "I had this little musical idea I brought in. It was basically just a lot of instruments, and the vibe was kinda there. It just had an emotion to it. I started playing it in the room for Brett and Carrie, and I remember saying, 'Well, you guys are hopefully gonna like this, or hate it.'"

The other writers did like DeStefano's idea, and it was Underwood who provided the song's title. "She said, 'I have this song title, 'Something in the Water,' and she kind of explained what she wanted to write about, and we were just immediately like, 'Oh gosh, that would really be beautiful over this,'" DeStefano recalled. "So we immediately knew. It was just one of those things where the whole vibe of the song really began at that point, really strong right from the get-go."

'There must be something in the water' is a humorous way of accounting for unusual or eccentric behavior. Other songs utilizing the phrase include:

This six-minute environmental call-to-arms finds Young crying foul of corporate greed and pleading to end the world's dependence of fossil fuels. It was spurred by several viewings of the documentary Under The Influence, which is about corporations' influence on government.

The song was originally performed at Crazy Horse's UK shows during the summer of 2014 and as part of Young's solo acoustic set at Farm Aid in Raleigh, North Carolina on September 13th.

Young laid down four separate versions of the song. The first one released was a fierce live rendition with Crazy Horse recorded in July 2014 during a show in Liverpool, England.

The video features a version recorded by Young with a 92-piece orchestra. Disturbing images of pollution are shown on the screens above the classical musicians.

Prince released the song for streaming on April 18, 2014 immediately after announcing a new partnership with Warner Bros. Eighteen years after the Purple One left the label when he famously wrote "slave" on his face to protest at his contract and changed his name to a symbol, it appears he is on good terms with them again.

Prince first performed this song at Minneapolis' Dakota Jazz Club in early 2013. Carrie Underwood debuted this song at the ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops event, which was held on April 7 2014 and broadcast by CBS on May 20, 2014.

Underwood penned the tune especially for the Las Vegas event along with Luke Laird, Hillary Lindsey and Shane McAnally. She said the song, which showcases her strong spiritual faith, was applicable to the troops, their families and, "even just someone going through something big."

Proceeds from the song went to the ACM Lifting Lives Foundation.

Underwood told The Hollywood Reporter the story of the song. "I wanted to write a song for this event," she said. "I kept it to myself because you never know how things are going to turn out. If I told everybody I wanted to write a song and I had writer's block, that would be terrible."

"I had a writing date with some amazing songwriter friends of mine," Underwood continued. "I tossed out the idea that we should try and chase something for a few minutes and see if it snowballs and becomes something we love. We played around on guitar. I started mumbling gibberish and humming tunes. None of it made sense. If someone walked in and saw what we were doing it would have looked ridiculous. We started humming and the words popped out and the song really wrote itself. You just have to be able to make sense of it all and put it in some kind of order."
