Harry Styles co-wrote this folksy Mumford & Sons influenced track with Savan Kotecha and Carl Falk. Kotecha and Falk, together with Rami Yacoub, penned many of One Direction's early hits including "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Live While We're Young," but this was the only song they contributed to on Midnight Memories.

Speaking to E! News, Harry said that he drew inspiration from his own life when penning lyrics for Midnight Memories. Through The Dark

Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson co-penned this folk-style, drum-driven inspirational anthem with their frequent collaborator Jamie Scott along with Toby Smith, who was the keyboardist and co-songwriter for the British Pop-Funk band Jamiroquai from 1992 up to 2002.

The five One Direction members contributed lyrics to 12 of the 14 songs on the standard edition of Midnight Memories (and an additional three on the 18-track deluxe.) Louis Tomlinson has the most credits of the group, with nine. He told The Mail On Sunday's Weekend magazine about how his songwriting has developed. "At first it was really hard: you sit in a room with writers asking you about your love life and stuff like that, and they start to piece together a song," he said. "But you keep on doing it and we've written more and more."

"This album is definitely more rock, more of us," Louis continued. "Writing the songs ourselves – that's the thing that makes you start to feel you deserve to be where you are, not all the other crazy stuff. We do look at other bands – even people like Take That – and see what it was that made them. Whatever else, it's the songs that are going to last, so that's much more of a focus for us."

Louis explained to host Ryan Seacrest how instead of writing as a five piece, the group often splits up. "We often break off in pairs and that's kind of the way that we do it," he said. "It often gets a bit crowded if everyone's in the same room."

This song is a bonus track on the Limited Yearbook Edition of Up All Night. It was written by Roy Stride, who is the frontman of Scouting For Girls, a group who have clocked up several Top 10 hits in their native UK, including "Elvis Ain't Dead," "Heartbeat" and the chart-topping "This Ain't A Love Song."

Stride also had a song shortlisted for 1D's third album, Midnight Memories, but it didn't make the final cut. Asked how he approaches writing a track for the biggest boyband in the world, Stride told Digital Spy : "I used to think, 'Ah, let's write a song for a boyband,' whereas now I've just realised you've got to write a f---ing good song. To get on a One Direction album - every single songwriter in the world wants to get on it - you've just got to write an absolutely amazing song. This tune was the result of Olly Murs's first writing session in LA with Andrew Frampton, Steve Kipner and Julian Bunetta, the trio behind hits for The Script and JLS. He quipped to Glamour magazine: "This song is my 'get-the-violins-out' ballad on the album haha. It's basically me saying that I hope one day I'll fall in love and settle down."

Murs regularly played a stripped back version of the song unaccompanied on the piano during his Right Place Right Time Tour. He described his solo performances as "pretty daunting."

The Enola Gay was the American plane that dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima in World War II. It was named after Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of the plane's pilot, Paul Tibbets. So why did the electronic music group OMD write a song about it? In our 2010 interview, we asked their lead singer Andy McCluskey, who replied: "Many people simply don't know what it's actually about. Some even thought it was a coded message that we were gay. We were both geeks about WWII airplanes. The most famous and influential single bomber was Enola Gay. Obvious choice for us, really."

OMD is the shortened form of the band's full name: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. This was the first of 7 Top-10 UK singles for the group; their only US hit was "If You Leave," which was written for the 1985 movie Pretty In Pink.

OMD played this in the 1981 cult film Urgh! A Music War, which is a collection of Punk and New Wave band performances.

Andy McCluskey of OMD explained in a September 2010 interview with CMU how the OMD duo create a track. "The music always comes first, usually inspired by a noise or drum pattern, or a sample or something. But I do have ideas about songs I want to write, lyrically or thematically. In the early days I was Mr. Anorak, I had a ring binder full of proposed song titles and ideas that I tried to marry with the music we made and I'd go, 'Oh, that might go on that'. So the music always comes first and the words go on top."

Second & Sebring

In 2007 Austin Carlile's mother passed away to Marfan Syndrome (a disorder of the bodies corrective tissues). When the of Mice & Men vocalist sat down to write a song to vent his emotions, it became a dedication to her memory, as well as a statement of how he hoped to make her proud, by living his life as an inspiration for others. Austin told Kerrang! magazine: "I wrote it for myself as a way to vent and express myself. It's made me want to write more stuff like that, to open up and be more real. Reading all the letters I get from fans, I've gone through a lot of that same stuff: bullying, depressive thoughts, not having any friends and living in an orphanage. These are things I went through and I can help others. I can be like a big brother, a mentor or guide."

The last place that Carlile lived with his mom was Second Street and Sebring Circle in Lehigh Acres, Florida. He told Kerrang!: "Everything that happened in the song happened while we were living there."

Carlile originally disliked this tune. He told Kerrang!: "The funny thing is, in the studio. The song's name was 'Austin Hates' because I didn't like it at all before I wrote the lyrics. But then, after I wrote them, I fell in love with it."

The actor Oscar Isaac had never ventured into folk music prior to taking the role of the titular star of Inside Llewyn Davis, who knocks around Greenwich Village's folk music scene in the early 1960s. Directors, the Coen Brothers, sent Dave Van Ronk's version of this traditional folk tune to the actors auditioning to play Davis, whose musical style is based on the folk legend. Isaac recalled to Billboard magazine: "In the initial audition, everyone had to play 'Hang Me' and they sent Dave Van Ronk's version. Since that was the only thing I had to go on, I listened to everything he had ever recorded and tried to play those songs. I really fell in love with his style of playing and the songs he would sing. He would find old songs and rearrange them."

Llewyn Davis performs this song in the Gaslight Cafe during the movie. The Gaslight Cafe was an American coffee house located in Greenwich Village. It opened in 1958 and was a well known venue for folk music and other musical acts, until it closed in 1971. New Jersey rock band The Gaslight Anthem took their name came from the venue as frontman Brian Fallon learnt it was one of the first places that Bob Dylan had played and he liked the imagery the word brought about.

The Masterplan

This song, written in a Japanese hotel room, is considered by Noel Gallagher and fans alike to be one of his best works. The lyrics were inspired by the hotel's long corridor and what Gallagher described as a "Good, relaxing smoke." When asked about what the song meant to him, Noel responded: "To me this sums up your journey through life. All we know is that we don't know."

At the end of this song you can hear in a high-pitch voice a vocal from The Beatles song "Octopus's Garden." The voice is Noel Gallagher.

This was originally a B-Side. It was the fourth track on the CD version of the "Wonderwall" single released in October 1995, three years before the The Masterplan album was released with the rest of Oasis best B-Sides.

Though many have speculated that the song's references to "Brother" ("Please, brother, let it be") were directed at Liam Gallagher, Noel denies this, saying: "We're all brothers and sisters."

This was released as the first single from of Mice And Men's third album Restoring Force. The album title is a reference to Of Mice and Men's previous LP, The Flood. Said vocalist Austin Carlile: "What happens after a disaster? What happens after 'The Flood'? You return to normal. You find balance again. That's what we felt like we were doing with this album. We wanted this record to bring equilibrium back to our band and music. We're letting everyone know what we're here to stay. We're 'Restoring Force.'"

Asked by Ultimate-Guitar.com what happened guitar-wise on this song, Phil Manansala replied: "I think we used a Naylor head and an ESP reverse headstock so it's a Baritone jumbo 7-string [LTD SC-607B]. And we also used the Baritone Les Paul because the Baritone sounds so tight and it just sounds bigger I feel like. That tone on that song sounds huge. That song just sounds massive. Four-on-the-floor the whole time too. That sounds like a rock and roll song."

Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us

Ollie & Jerry was a Californian Dance-Pop duo consisting of drummer Ollie E. Brown and R&B singer Jerry Knight. The pair had previously worked together in the R&B group Raydio – Knight was a founding member singing vocals on their 1977 hit, "Jack and Jill," whilst Brown was a session drummer on all of Raydio's albums.

This was recorded as the title theme to the 1984 breakdance-themed movie Breakin', and released as the first single from the film's soundtrack album. The single became a hit reaching the Top Ten in both the US and UK.

Jean-Claude Van Damme was an uncredited background dancing spectator in the movie and he can be seen at one point during the music video.

Ollie & Jerry's follow-up single "Electric Boogaloo," was only a minor hit peaking at #57 in the UK and reaching the Top 50 of the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Dance Club Play charts. The duo split after the song's release in mid-1985.

Rip It Up

Formed in 1976 as the Nu-Sonics (named after a cheap brand of guitar), this Glasgow band were galvanized into Orange Juice by impresario Alan Horne at the end of the decade. In the early 1980s they were part of the scene that their original label, Postcard, celebrated as "The Sound of Young Scotland" along with fellow bands Josef K and Aztec Camera.

Orange Juice are best known for this song, which reached #8 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1983, the group's only UK Top 40 hit. Frontman Edwyn Collins went on to experience some solo success, particularly with his 1994 transatlantic hit "A Girl Like You."

The song signaled a departure from the sound of the band's earlier post-punk singles, revealing a white-boy funk influence with Chic influenced guitars and a synthesizer. It was the first UK chart hit to feature the Rowland TB – 303 synth, which eventually became synonymous with the Acid House scene.

The backing vocals were provided by Paul Quinn, a classmate of Collins between the ages of 11 and 15. Quinn went on to front Bourgie Bourgie, a Scottish band who had a #48 UK hit with "Breaking Point" in 1984. He also collaborated with Edwyn Collins on a version of The Velvet Underground's "Pale Blue Eyes," which reached #72 in the UK the same year.

The lyric, "you know the scene and it's very humdrum. And my favorite songs entitled boredom," is a dig at the state of early 1980s Pop, but also a reference to the Buzzcocks, whose debut EP Spiral Scratch was a huge influence on Orange Juice's DIY ethos. A snatch of the guitar riff from the EP's track "Boredom" briefly chimes in after that line.

An NME review at the time said of the Rip it Up album: "Orange Juice are a minor group trying hard to be bigger and more significant than a really ought to be." The negative appraisal upset Edwin Collins who recalled in 2013: "When Rip It Up got slagged off by the NME, I would refuse to go on the tour bus because I was depressed! You can laugh about it now, but back then it was life and death."

Rip it Up's saxophone parts were provided by British jazz performer Dick Morrisey, who also featured on material by Paul McCartney, Gary Numan, Peter Gabriel and Vangelis. (He played the haunting saxophone solo on the Vangelis composition "Love Theme" for the 1982 film Blade Runner).

In Repair

This is based on the ideas and writings of futurist author Ray Kurzweil, who writes about AI (artificial intelligence) and its place in human society. Kurzweil suggests that the AI machines will "embody human qualities, claim to be human, and we will believe them." Kurzweil's voice opens the beginning of the song.

Kurzweil's book Spiritual Machines is where the band got the name for this album. The book was suggested by then guitarist Mike Turner. (thanks, Lorne - Toronto, Canada, for above 2)

Ozzy's group Black Sabbath recorded this in 1972 for their album Vol. 4. Kelly is Ozzy's daughter, and when they recorded it as a duet, they changed some of the lyrics to make it about a father and daughter drifting apart.

This came out around the time Ozzy crashed his ATV. He was badly hurt, but the publicity from the accident helped this song do very well in the UK.

This was not the first father/daughter collaboration to top the UK charts. Frank and Nancy Sinatra reached #1 with "Somethin' Stupid" in 1967.

For the original 1972 version, Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi stayed up all night snorting cocaine and learning piano while the band was in LA recording Vol. 4. Ozzy came in and heard the piano part that Iommi had written, and liked it. Ozzy started singing and, on the final recorded version, Geezer played the mellotron.

The song was covered by American soul singer Charles Bradley in 2013 as a Record Store Day single and later became the title track and cornerstone of his third album.

Bradley told Noisey why he likes the track so much. "That song is very emotional to me. I didn't want to learn that song, I used to sing it lyric by lyric. But when I listened to the whole song, the story of the song it made me think about talking with my mother, bonding.
I'd come home from tour… and I'm the only one out of her boys that she'd let come in and jump in the bed with her, and we'd sit there and talk. She'd tell me a lot of things about her.

The last 12 years of her life, she actually told me things that got me stronger. She told me 'I was trying to tell it to all y'all kids, but y'all didn't listen to me.' I'm glad I took the open heart and said let bygones be bygones and let's get to know each other."

Love Runs Out

The follow up to OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" single was a brand new track that didn't feature on their Native album. Speaking to Capital FM, frontman Ryan Tedder said: "The very short back story on the song was when we were working on Native I originally thought this was going to be the first single and it's called 'Love Runs Out' and I wanted it to be the first single, a few of us in the band did, but I could not finish the chorus. And you can't have a song without a chorus."

"It took me about a year," he added. "We finished it in Paris."

The video was directed by Sophie Muller. The British director has also worked on music videos for Sade, Björk and Katy B.

The title has two meanings. The song was written at 4 in the morning, and lead singer Raine Maida's father's initials are A.M., so it's "For A.M."

From an article in the Edmonton Journal, February 9, 2000: "Put Raine Maida on a stage in front of thousands of fans - even those of angry Scottish variety - and he relishes the experience. Put Maida on that same stage in front of his father, and the singer would rather escape into the wings. It doesn't matter if Maida's father is enveloped by hundreds of others - the devilish, brooding frontman of Our Lady Peace still doesn't feel at peace with his dad around. Despite six years of touring, Maida only discovered his discomfort last week, a few days after the launch of Our Lady Peace's national tour for Happiness...Is Not A Fish That You Can Catch. Following the moody rock band's show in Toronto, Maida knew he wasn't happy with his performance, but couldn't quite put his finger on the reason. It finally dawned on him during the band's subsequent gig in Montreal. "Every time I have to play Toronto, I know my dad is in the crowd and it basically destroys me," says Maida. "This time, I felt like I couldn't even speak properly. I just realized (my discomfort) after the show in Montreal, because it was such a great show. It felt so much more comfortable.
