Devil Pray Song Chart

This song finds Madonna pleading for a sign from God over an acoustic guitar. There are also a number of references to illegal substances. The singer explained to David Blaine during a chat for Interview Magazine, that the track was inspired by people's misguided use of drugs to connect with a higher being. "It's about how people take drugs to connect to God or to a higher level of consciousness," Madonna said. "I keep saying, 'Plugging into the matrix'. If you get high, you can do that, which is why a lot of people drop acid or do drugs, because they want to get closer to God."

"But there's going to be a short circuit, and that's the illusion of drugs, because they give you the illusion of getting closer to God, but ultimately they kill you. They destroy you," she continued. "I mean, I tried everything once, but as soon as I was high, I spent my time drinking tons of water to get it out of my system. As soon as I was high, I was obsessed with flushing it out of me. I was like, 'OK, I'm done now.'"

The song also has a message of seeking spirituality via togetherness. Madonna explained to Rolling Stone: "The way we're going to change the world, or the way we're going to ultimately feel joy, is through unity. I'm certainly not encouraging religious behavior; when I say people are thinking in a religious way, I think they're thinking about rules and dogma and laws that separate. When I say spirituality, I mean a consciousness that has an understanding that we are all in this together, that we are all one. We have to find a way to feel joy and to bring joy to the world together. That ultimately is with consciousness, not drugs."

This song partly takes its inspiration from the bands that graced MTV in the '90s like Green Day, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. "Those songs and those riffs and all that stuff definitely had a huge influence on me," lead guitarist Chad Gilbert told MTV News.

The song has proved to be a fan favorite when performed live. "In the chorus there's a sort of 'whoa' part that's always like a big sing-a-long when we play it live," Gilbert said. "It took on its own life."

The visual pays tribute to old-style live videos that were shown in vintage MTV shows such as 120 Minutes and Headbanger's Ball. "We just thought it would be fun to pay tribute to the old MTV style — the live videos," Gilbert said. "For me and MTV, it was always the MTV year-end countdowns. This was the first single from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, which was released 3 years after Morissette's wildly popular Jagged Little Pill. The wait created a lot of demand for new Alanis material.

Morissette wrote this after taking a year and a half off. She toured constantly in 1995 and 1996 to support Jagged Little Pill. The song is Morissette's reaction to the conflicted feelings she had after achieving success. In her VH1 Storytellers appearance, she explained: "I felt that I lived in a culture that told me that I had to consistently and constantly look outside myself to feel this elusive bliss. And I achieved a lot of what society had told me to achieve and I still didn't feel peaceful. I started questioning everything, and I realized that actually everything was an illusion and it was scary for me because everything I had believed in was dissolving in front of me and there was a death of sorts, a really beautiful one ultimately, but at first a very scary one, and so I stopped. I stopped for the first time and I was overcome with a huge sense of compassion for myself first, and then naturally that translated into my feeling and compassion for everyone around me and a huge amount of gratitude that I had never felt before to this extent. And that's why I had to write this song, 'Thank U,' because I had to express how exciting this was and how scary it was and all of these opportunities for us to define who we are."

The video showed Alanis singing naked in the middle of an empty city street. Her hair covered her breasts and her crotch was digitally obscured to keep it family-friendly. A city block had to be shut down to shoot the video.

The album set the record for most copies sold by a female artist its first week with 460,000.

This was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal.

During her time off, Morissette spent time in India, which gave her some of the ideas for this. She thanks India in the song.

Sam Hunt closes his Montavello album with this take on making love in the back of a truck. Penned by the singer with Kylie Sackley and Brandon Hood, the track originally featured on the singer's 2013 acoustic mixtape Between the Pines.

The tracks on Montavello are country songs sprinkled with other genres such as R&B, pop and rap. Radio.com commented to Hunt that this cut sounds like a Drake song. "I never listened to a lot of Drake but I imagine that Drake and I are influenced by a lot of the same people," Hunt responded. "There was definitely a sound that was heard throughout '90s R&B. I think that influenced a lot of what I'm doing. I remember the first time I listened to Usher. I was blown away by that vibe and I think that stuck with me since then."

This song is about political corruption in Central America. The US was supporting Nicaraguan rebels (Contras) amid great controversy. It's a rare political song by The Stones.

A lot of production went into the track. There is a great deal of echo and phasing on the drums and guitars.

Mick Jagger wrote almost all of this. He said of the song: "I'm not saying I nicked it, but this song was heavily influenced by William Burroughs' Cities Of The Red Night, a free-wheeling novel about political and sexual repression. It combines a number of different references to what was going down in Argentina and Chile. I think it's really good but it wasn't particularly successful at the time because songs that deal overtly with politics never are that successful, for some reason." Chuck Leavell, formerly of the Allman Brothers Band, played keyboards. He worked with The Stones throughout the '80s.

The video portrayed Mick Jagger as a rebel who is shot by Central American forces. This was a huge departure for the Rolling Stones, whose videos to that point consisted of performance footage with heavy preening by Jagger. It was directed by Julien Temple, who had done the Sex Pistols documentary The Great Rock And Roll Swindle. He revealed in I Want My MTV by Craig Marks: "I wrote the treatment for 'Undercover of the Night" as a way of not doing the video. I was a punk rocker, and the Stones were regarded as jet-set traitors to the cause. The song was about the death squads then operating in Central America, and I wrote an extreme treatment about being in the middle of an urban revolution, and dramatized the notion of Keith and Mick really not liking each other by having Keith kill Mick in the video. I never thought they would do it. Of course they loved it.

The video aired on MTV, but was turned down by some other outlets because of its violence.

Waiting On A Friend Song Chart

This is a rare mature reflection from The Stones, as Mick Jagger sings about the values of friendship as opposed to women. Then again, it might be about drugs. Keith Richards was a heroin user at the time, and the song could be a euphemism for waiting on the "connection" - the man with the drugs. Should Keith (or in this case, Mick, as he is singing in the video) get questioned by the police, his response would be, "I'm just waiting on a friend." (thanks, Russell - High Desert, CA)

Originally Recorded in 1972 at the sessions for their album Goats Head Soup, this didn't make the cut but was repackaged and released on Tattoo You nine years later. Released as a single, it did very well in America thanks to the advent of MTV; the network launched in 1981 and was thrilled to have a new video by a rock band of The Stones' stature.

There are no musician credits on Tattoo You, but it is clear that Mick Taylor contributed on guitar, which he was not compensated for. Taylor fell into obscurity after leaving The Stones in 1974.

Think this is about waiting for a woman? Think again. Mick Jagger said in 1983: "Just let me be cynical for a moment. First of all, it's really NOT about waiting on a woman friend. It's just about a FRIEND; it doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman. I can see people saying, Oh, we're all much older now, Mick's writing this much more compassionate stuff, must be about a real person. But that's only in their perception of it." Earthquake Driver Song Chart

Counting Crows vocalist Adam Duritz wrote this track with guitarist David Immerglück. The song finds Duritz asking, "What is the price of this fame and self-absorption?" He told Teamrock.com a lot of the lyrics are him "making fun of things." Duritz explained: "Someone was bitching about the obviousness of it saying 'I live alone but I'm hungry for affection. I struggle with connections' – does he have to relate his travails? That's a joke, you idiot!"

"And we joke about people being self-absorbed, but of course we want them to be that way, because who the f--k else is going to write songs for us, paint paintings, and sacrifice the rest of their lives to examining their own navels, so that everybody else can be entertained,?" he added. Heaven Song Chart

Along with "Neighbors," this was one of two songs on Tattoo You recorded specifically for the album. The other tracks started as outtakes for other albums.

Tattoo You was the last time The Rolling Stones scored a #1 on the US albums chart, after a full decade of albums that reached the summit.

Keith Richards doesn't play on this track; their bass player Bill Wyman played guitar and also synthesizer and bass. Mick Jagger also played guitar on the track, and the only other performer was Charlie Watts on drums.

The vocals here peg this song as one of the most psychedelic the Stones ever did. The group had been gradually edging from pure blues to hard rock to psychedelic styles throughout the previous decade. Mick Jagger got quite creative with overdubbing and mixing on parts of the Tattoo You album.

The very concept of Heaven, an afterlife for humans presumed virtuous and pleasurable, seems built into the human psyche. It is a component of just about every major religion ever to take root in human history. However, this song seems to be talking only about sexual ecstasy.

The first new music to be heard from Jodeci since their breakup in 1996 is a jam about domestic abuse. "We aren't immune to issues that are important in our community," said Jodeci's K-Ci . "Domestic violence has always been an issue in relationships, but lately it's been brought to the front of our community consciousness."

A snippet of the song was first heard on November 7, 2014, when Jodeci performed a medley of their tunes at the Soul Train Awards.

Ironic Song Chart

The events described in the song (rain on your wedding day, a traffic jam when you're already late, etc.), are not examples of irony. Irony is the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning. The one actual, ironic statement in this song is, "As the plane crashed down he thought 'well, isn't this nice'..." The London Times June 14, 2008 asked Morissette if she has worked out the meaning of irony yet.
