Mercenaries Lyrics

Can you come on
Out of the cold
How do we make it out alive

Get a weapon
Lockin the door
Stayin awake to stay alive

Kill the fallen
Knife in the back
Plan of attack
A beady eye

As you follow
Head out the pack
Flood out the rat
And stab em' dry

Got ya' come on
Goin in deep
Falling asleep
An open door

Get the ballast
Crawl up the coast
Pull on the neck
And cut the cord

Can you hold it
Get me a rope
Combing the lake of fire god

Like a bullet
Follow the smoke
Head of the snake
And cut it off

Ghosts heroing front lines
On a lonely cove
And they left behind
A bit if sorrow

You didn't need to count me out
When the final push is a little weight on your neck sometimes

You didn't need to count me out
When your feeling low here's a little
Hand from above because your on my mind

You kinda got it
Further a cause
Broaden the reach

A little pain
Like a comet burn up and die
Hear a pin drop a mile away

Like a disease
Move with a tease
Glide of the feet
An atom bomb

As your dieing
Both of your knees
Will fall to the street
You'll carry on

  • This was one of the first songs that frontman Tom DeLonge wrote with new Angels & Airwaves member Ilan Rubin after the multi-instrumentalist joined the band in 2011. The pair completely altered the tune later on, transforming it into a much more electronic number. "The first version of it had more guitar riffs and was more what you'd expect from my melodies," DeLonge told Digital Spy . "Angels & Airwaves hasn't really had the ability to play that angsty and have that much energy in the past," he added. "But with Ilan we're now able to do it."

    Heart of Gold Lyrics

    I want to live,
    I want to give
    I've been a miner
    For a Heart of Gold
    It's these expressions
    I never give
    That keep me searching
    For a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old
    Keeps me searching
    For a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old

    I've been to Hollywood
    I've been to Redwood
    I crossed the ocean
    For a heart of gold
    I've been in my mind,
    It's such a fine line
    That keeps me searching
    For a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old
    Keeps me searching
    For a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old

    Keep me searching
    For a heart of gold
    You keep me searching
    And I'm growing old
    Keep me searching
    For a heart of gold
    I've been a miner
    For a heart of gold

    Heart of Gold Song Chart
  • With a straightforward metaphor and complete lack of pathos, this not a typical Neil Young song. It finds him mining for a "heart of gold," which depending on your perspective, is either a touching and heartfelt sentiment, or a mawkish platitude. Rolling Stone took the churlish view, complaining that the album evoked "superstardom's weariest clichés." The listening public and Young's fans were far more accepting, however, and the song became his biggest hit.
  • Young wrote this in 1971 after he suffered a back injury that made it difficult for him to play the electric guitar, so on the Harvest tracks he played acoustic. Despite the injury, Young was in good spirits (possibly thanks to the pain-killers), which is reflected in this song. The next few years were more challenging for Young, as he suffered a series of setbacks: his son Zeke was born with cerebral palsy, his friend Danny Whitten died, and he split with his wife, Carrie Snodgress. His next three albums, which became known as "The Ditch Trilogy," expressed these dark times in stark contrast to "Heart of Gold."
  • This song was recorded at the first sessions for the Harvest album, which took place on Saturday, February 6, 1971 and were set up the night before.

Neil Young was in Nashville to record a performance for The Johnny Cash Show along with Tony Joe White , James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. Elliot Mazer, a producer who owned nearby Quadrafonic Studios, set up a dinner party on February 5, inviting the show's guests and about 50 other people. Mazer was friends with Young's manager Elliot Roberts, who introduced the two at the gathering. Young and Mazer quickly hit it off when Neil learned that Elliot has produced a band called Area Code 615. Young asked if he could set up a session the next day, and Mazer complied.

Nashville has an abundance of studio musicians, but getting them to work on a Saturday could be a challenge. Mazur was able to get one member of Area Code 615: Drummer Kenny Buttrey. The other musicians he found were guitarist Teddy Irwin, bass player Tim Drummond, and pedal stell player Ben Keith. All were seasoned pros.

Keith recalls showing up late and sitting down to play right away. He says they recorded five songs before they stopped for introductions.
  • By far, this was the biggest hit for Young as a solo artist. A very influential musician, he was never too concerned about making hit records.
  • James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt sang backup; they don't come in until the end of the song. Like Young, Taylor and Ronstadt were in town to appear on The Johnny Cash Show (the song's producer Elliot Mazer had produced Ronstadt's 1970 Silk Purse album). Young convinced them to lend their voices to this track, and they came in on Sunday, February 8, the day after the rest of the song was completed.

When it was their turn to add harmonies, the task proved rather arduous. Ronstadt recalled to Mojo: "We were sat on the couch in the control room, but I had to get up on my knees to be on the same level as James because he's so tall. Then we sang all night, the highest notes I could sing. It was so hard, but nobody minded. It was dawn when we walked out of the studio."
  • In the liner notes to his Decade collection, Young said: "This song put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch."

This statement reflected Young's aversion to fame, and was not meant to demean the song. In a later interview with NME, he clarified: "I think Harvest is probably the finest record I've made."
  • This was the song that tweaked Bob Dylan; Young had made no secret that he idolized Dylan, but when Dylan heard "Heart of Gold" he thought this was going too far. As quoted in Neil Young: Long May You Run: The Illustrated History , Dylan complained, "I used to hate it when it came on the radio. I always liked Neil Young, but it bothered me every time I listened to "Heart of Gold." I'd say, that's me. If it sounds like me, it should as well be me."
  • This song was recorded in just two takes. The musicians were not familiar with Young or the song, but knew how to play. This spontaneity created just the right feel for the track - something that would have never come about through additional tweaking. This style of recording, where top-tier studio musicians are asked to give total focus to a take with little instruction, is something Bob Dylan often did. It's also a throwback to the analog days when tape (which was expensive) was rolling, making additional takes costly and cumbersome.
  • "Heart Of Gold" is the name of the spaceship stolen by Zaphod Beeblebrox in Douglas Adams' book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy . (thanks, Charles - London, England)
  • Young became the first Canadian to have a #1 album in the US when Harvest topped the Billboard 200 for two weeks in April 1972.
  • This song appears in the 1984 film Iceman, and on the soundtrack of the 2010 movie Eat Pray Love.
  • Lady Gaga references this in her song "You and I." The line goes, "On my birthday you sung me 'Heart of Gold,' with a guitar humming and no clothes."
  • In 2005, the CBC Radio One series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version declared "Heart of Gold" to be the third best Canadian song of all time.
  • Stryper frontman Michael Sweet covered this for his 2014 I'm Not Your Suicide album. He also recorded a second duet version with country artist Electra Mustaine, who is the daughter of Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine.
  • Young revived the guitar riff for this song on CSN&Y's "Slowpoke" in 1999.
  • Tori Amos covered this on her 2001 album Strange Little Girls . She was trying to demonstrate how men and women hear different meaning in the same songs.

    Something I Need Lyrics

I had a dream the other night
About how we only get one life
Woke me up right after two
Stayed awake and stared at you
So I wouldn't lose my mind

And I had the week that came from hell
And yes I know that you can tell
But you're like the net under the ledge
When I go flying off the edge
You go flying off as well
And if we're only here once I wanna live with

    You've got Something I Need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)
I wanna live with you (you, you, you)
    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)
I wanna live with you (you, you)

Last night I think I drank too much
    Call it our temporary crutch
With broken words I've tried to say
    Honey don't you be afraid
If we've got nothing we've got us
And if we're only here once I wanna live with

    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)
I wanna live with you (you, you, you)

I know that we're not the same
But I'm so damn glad that we made it
To this time, this time, now

    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once
I wanna live with you, yeah

    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)
I wanna live with you (you, you, you)

    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)

  • Croydon singer-songwriter Ben Haenow has sang in bands since his mid teens. In 2006 he became the frontman for the rock and roll band the Lost Audio, which he formed with his brother, Alex. However, Haenow only really came to the public's attention when he won the eleventh series of the UK version of The X Factor.
  • Haenow released a cover of OneRepublic's "Something I Need" as his winner's single. Produced by One Direction songwriter John Ryan, it was made available for download immediately after his victory on December 14, 2014.
  • The CD version features recordings of some of Haenow's greatest moments during his time on X Factor. Included are the singer's renditions of "Jealous Guy," "Highway To Hell" and "Man In The Mirror."
  • All the proceeds from the sale of the song went to the children's charity Together for Short Lives, which Simon Cowell has supported for a number of years.

  • This is about Brenda Spencer, a 16-year-old San Diego high school student who lived across from an elementary school. On Monday, January 29, 1979, she opened fire on the school with a rifle, killing 2 adults (including the principal) and injuring 9 kids before going back to her home. Police surrounded her home and waited for 7 hours until she gave herself up. In that time, she spoke with a reporter on the phone. When asked why she did it, she replied, "I just started shooting, that's it. I just did it for the fun of it. I just don't like Mondays. I just did it because it's a way to cheer the day up. Nobody likes Mondays."
  • This was #1 hit in 32 different countries, but it flopped in America, probably because the subject matter hit too close to home. Gun violence is a big problem in America.
  • At a basic level, this is often heard as a song lamenting the beginning of the work week. Some radio stations play this every Monday at a certain time.
  • Group leader Bob Geldof wrote this. He went on to organize charity efforts Band Aid, Live Aid and Live 8, earning a KBE (the equivalent of knighthood given to people born outside of England) for his efforts. The Boomtown Rats played this as part of their set at Live Aid.
  • While in Atlanta touring, Bob Geldof heard the news story about Brenda Spencer. Geldof composed the song on the spot, originally as a reggae number. Back in Los Angeles after the tour, a studio demo was recorded with grand piano and vocals. By the time 'I Don't Like Mondays' was introduced onstage in Loch Lomond, Scotland, the song had been transformed dramatically.
  • Brenda Spencer's parents tried to have the single banned in the US, without success.
  • The video, directed by David Mallet, was one of the first to have a narrative "story" to it.
  • In the UK, the song won the prestigious Best Pop Song and Outstanding British Lyric categories at The Ivor Novello Awards. It was also voted 1979's "Single of the Year" in the British Pop and Rock awards.
  • Tori Amos covered this on her album Strange Little Girls . Every song on the album is a different take on a song written by a man.
  • Bob Geldof sang this song along with members of the Boomtown Rats and Travis at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park, London on July 2nd, 2005. Live 8 was a series of concerts, which occurred in the G8 nations and South Africa, that Geldof helped to organize in order to pressure world leaders to get rid of the debt of African nations. (thanks, Emily - Ottawa, Canada)
  • Geldof originally intended this to be a B-side and when Ensign put this out as a single, he protested, "You're mad, that's not a hit." However his record label people knew better.

The Things That I Used To Do
Lord, I won't do no more.
The things that I used to do
Lord, I won't do no more.
I used to set and hold your hand, Baby
Cried begging you not to go.

I would search all night for you, Baby
Lord, and my search would always end in vain.
I would search all night for you, Baby
Lord, and my search would always end in vain.
But I knew all along, Darling
That you was hid out with your other man.

I'm going to send you back to your mother, Baby
Lord, and I'm going back to my family, too.
I'm going to send you back to your mother, Baby

  • Slim claimed he was offered a song from God and a song from The Devil. He chose this one, which was the song from The Devil.
  • This has been covered by many guitar greats, including Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Chuck Berry. Slim's innovative playing, including the use of distortion, became widely copied.
  • Most hit songs at the time were specific to a certain region, but this was a rare R&B song that was popular in the North and South of the United States. It stayed at #1 on the R&B charts for six weeks.
  • Proceeds from this allowed Slim to feed his liquor habit. He died of pneumonia at 32.
  • Slim often played guitar with his teeth or behind his back when he performed this, theatrics that would be copied often in the years to come.
  • A young Ray Charles wrote the arrangements and played piano on this track. It was the first arrangement he got an official credit for. The session took place J&M Studios in New Orleans, where Charles was in town playing some clubs. The session was a grind, and it marked a milestone in Charles' career, as he led the musicians in take after take all night until they finally got it right. At the end of the song, when the horns fade out, you can hear Charles yelling, "Yeah!"

"And she was like, 'Oh, it's called 'Smoke When I Drink.'"

"The track is really edgy and fun, and the imagery of that metaphor, like, 'Baby you're a cigarette straight to my head,' or 'Alcohol and nicotine, that's you and me' — I really loved the writing on it," she added. • "Wicked Game" is a tale of obsessive love. Chris Isaak spoke to us about the late-night event which inspired the song: "This one I wrote really late at night and it was written in a short time, because I remember that a girl had called me and said, 'I want to come over and talk to you,' and 'talk' was a euphemism. And she said, 'I want to come over and talk to you until you're no longer able to stand up.' And I said, 'Okay, you're coming over.' And as soon as I hung up I thought, 'Oh, my God. I know she's gonna be trouble. She's always been trouble. She's a wildcat. And here I am, I'm going to get killed, but I'm doing this.' And I wrote 'Wicked Game': 'world's on fire and no one can save me but you.' It's like you start thinking about it, and by the time she came over to the house, I had the song written. And I think she was probably upset because I was more excited by the song. (Laughing) I was like, 'Yes, you're gorgeous, baby. But listen to this song!'"
  • Isaak told us "Wicked Game" came to him effortlessly: "I think that sometimes you get easy ones that come very quick and you're really glad - you go, 'Wow, where'd this come from?' It's so fast to write. And then there's other songs that you do and it's like doing your homework. It's like you really are working and biting the pencil and working on that third verse. Most of the time you do work. But sometimes you get lucky."
  • The song got a big boost when an instrumental version was featured in the 1990 movie Wild At Heart, which was directed by David Lynch and starred Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage. Isaak spoke to interviewer, Mike Ragogna, about David Lynch: "I enjoy talking about David Lynch because he's such a great guy. The question I get about him is, 'How is David Lynch? Is he scary or spooky or something?' I don't think it's ever guys who make films like David makes or who have that kind of weird bent in their artwork–those guys are probably the nicest guys in real life because they've expressed all of their weird angles. The guys you have to watch are the guys who go, 'I'm a scout master, the proud father of two children, and I'm also a deacon in the church.' Then you go, 'Be careful.' If he's out in the back yard at night with a shovel, be careful because he's burying something."
  • Lee Chesnut, who was music director of an Atlanta radio station and a huge fan of David Lynch films, helped popularize this song when he added it to his playlist after watching Wild At Heart. The song gradually gained an audience and charted in the US 18 months after Isaak's album Heart Shaped World was released.
  • The fashion photographer Herb Ritts directed the track's racy video. It features model Helena Christensen seducing Isaak on a beach. In 1991, it won MTV Video Music Awards for Best Male Video, Best Cinematography, and Best Video From a Film. It regularly features on "Sexiest Music Videos Ever" lists. Ritts, who often worked with black and white, also directed a number of commercials for Victoria's Secret and Revlon. Other videos he directed include "In The Closet" and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)." Bloodhound Gang parodied the "Wicked Game" video for their 2007 video, "Screwing You on the Beach at Night."
  • In 1996, the song was used on the TV show Friends in the episode The One Where Ross and Rachel... You Know, when Ross and Rachel make love for the first time.
  • The instrumental version was used in the 2000 film The Family Man, starring Nicolas Cage.
  • Jaguar used this in commercials to introduce it's X-type cars.
  • HIM, WU LYF, Washed Out and R.E.M are among the artists who have covered this track.
  • A cover by German house producer Parra for Cuva reached the Top 10 in the UK as well as the singles charts in many other European countries in 2014. His version, re-titled as "Wicked Games" in plural featured vocals by his frequent collaborator Anna Naklab.
  • The Irish singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes recorded a remake in 2012 for the US teen drama Pretty Little Liars.

  • The Mock Turtles were formed in Manchester in 1987 by vocalist Martin Coogan, the older brother of the comedian and actor Steve Coogan. This was the band's only hit single.

Martin Coogan recalled in One Hit Wonders by Chris Welch and Duncan Soar: "We recorded a track called 'Lay Me Down' and my manager said: 'What's the B-side?' I said: 'I haven't written it yet.' He said: 'Just give me a title.' I said: 'Can You Dig It?' The following evening I had friends round for dinner and had to excuse myself to write the song in the back room. When we signed to Siren they wanted us to re-record 'Can You Dig It?' and it was a hit."
  • The Mock Turtles were unable to follow up the early success and were dropped by their label. The band remained in limbo until Vodafone used the song in 2003 for an advertising campaign featuring David Beckham . This saw the band make a comeback with Norman Cook doing a remix of the song, taking the track back into the UK Top 20. Coogan recalled: "Vodafone wanted to use it in a £25m ad campaign, and needed my permission. I said: 'Where do I sign?' Then Virgin Records wanted to do a remix, so I called in Norman Cook to do the job. The remix went back into the charts."

If you see a faded sign by the side of the road that says
15 Miles to the, Love Shack! Love Shack yeah
I'm headin' down the Atlanta highway

'Cause love rules at the Love Shack!
Well it's set way back in the middle of a field,
Just a funky old shack and I gotta get back
    Glitter on the mattress
    Glitter on the highway
    Glitter on the front porch
    Glitter on the hallway

The Love Shack is a little old place where
    We can get together
    Love Shack baby
    Love Shack baby!
Love Shack, that's where it's at
Love Shack, that's where it's at

Huggin' and a kissin', dancin' and a lovin',
Wearin' next to nothing 'cause it's hot as an oven
    The whole shack shimmies!
    Yeah the whole shack shimmies
The whole shack shimmies when everybody's movin' around
And around and around and around
    Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin' baby!
Folks linin' up outside just to get down
    Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin' baby
    Funky little shack!
    Funky little shack!

Hop in my Chrysler, it's as big as a whale
And it's about to set sail!
I got me a car, it seats about 20 so come on!
    And bring your jukebox money.

The Love Shack is a little old place where
    We can get together
    Love Shack baby
    A Love Shack baby!
    Love Shack baby Love Shack
    Love Shack baby Love Shack
Love Shack baby Love Shack (oh baby that't where it's at)
Love Shack baby Love Shack (baby that't where it's at)

Bang bang bang on the door baby!
    Knock a little louder baby!
Bang bang bang on the door baby!
    I can't hear you
Bang bang bang on the door baby!
    Knock a little louder sugar!
Bang bang bang on the door baby!
    I can't hear you

Bang bang bang on the door baby! Knock a little louder
Bang bang on the door baby, bang bang!
On the door baby, bang bang!
    On the door, bang bang!
On the door baby, bang bang!

    You're what?
    Tin roof
    rusted!

    Love Shack, baby Love Shack!
    Love Shack, baby Love Shack!
    Love Shack, baby Love Shack!
    Love Shack, baby Love Shack!

    Love Shack Song Chart
  • This was inspired by a 1970 Temptations song called "Psychedelic Shack," which had the refrain: "Psychedelic Shack, that's where it's at." The location of the actual Love Shack is not clear, but in 2004 MSNBC reported that an unoccupied, 5-room cabin with a tin roof in Athens, Georgia that had recently burned down was probably the dwelling in question. Kate Pierson lived there in the '70s.
  • This introduced The B-52's to a mainstream audience. They had a strong cult following, especially in the gay community, but not a broad audience.
  • Towards the end, the music stops and Cindy Wilson wails: "Tin Roof, Rusted." The line is commonly misheard.
  • The lyrics are fun and harmless, but they can be interpreted as being about a place where people go to have sex. At Disney World, you will never see Mickey Mouse dancing to it - really - they refuse to play it at Disney weddings.
  • The video was shot at a house in Upstate New York belonging to a friend of the band. He can be seen in the garden as the camera sweeps by the window.
  • Drag queen Rupaul, unknown at the time, is in the video. He had a dance hit called "Supermodel" a few years later.
  • Nile Rodgers and Don Was produced this. Rodgers has produced hits for Peter Gabriel, Madonna and David Bowie, as well as his group Chic, who had Disco hits with "Le Freak" and "Good Times." Was has worked with Jewel, Bob Dylan, Elton John and The Rolling Stones. He also had his own group in the '80s called Was Not Was, who had a hit with "Walk The Dinosaur."
  • This was the B-52's first Top 10 hit in the US.
  • The group performed this on an episode of The Simpsons as "Glove Slap."
  • Fred Schneider and Kate Pierson performed this at the 2002 Jammy Awards with the group Particle. Since the awards honored jam bands, they stretched the song into an extended jam.
  • Over the years, various adult video stores have cropped up using the Love Shack name. There was also a movie released on video in 2010 called Love Shack, which was about a group of porn stars who get together to make a film in honor of a deceased producer.
  • The horns were provided by The Uptown Horns, a New York-based section that toured with the J. Geils Band on their Freeze Frame tour and played on Tom Waits' Rain Dogs album.

  • Minaj remind her rivals on this brag rap tune of some of the accomplishments during her career.

Who had Eminem on the first album?
Who had Kanye saying, 'She a problem'?
Who the f--k in the game made her own cologne?
Who made Lil Wayne give 'em five million?

The rapper goes to question why she has to point out all of her milestones to her doubters.
  • The song was produced by Metro Boomin and rapper/producer and reality show star Yung Berg. The Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood cast member goes by the name Hitmaka when he's behind the boards. Berg also worked on the Prinkprint tracks "Favorite," "Buy a Heart" and "Shanghai."
  • Jeremih croons the hook. The R&B singer also provided guest vocals on another Pinkprint track, "Favorite."

    Longview Lyrics

I sit around and watch the tube but, nothing's on
I change the channels for an hour or two
Twiddle my thumbs just for a bit
I'm sick of all the same old shit
In a house with unlocked doors
    And I'm fucking lazy

Bite my lip and close my eyes
    Take me away to paradise
I'm so damn bored, I'm going blind!!!
    And I smell like shit

Peel me off this Velcro seat and get me moving
I sure as hell can't do it by myself
I'm feeling like a dog in heat
Barred indoors from the summer street
I locked the door to my own cell
    And I lost the key

Bite my lip and close my eyes
    Take me away to paradise
I'm so damn bored, I'm going blind!!!
    And I smell like shit

    I got no motivation
    Where is my motivation
    No time for motivation
    Smoking my inspiration

I sit around and watch the phone, but no one's calling
Call me pathetic, call me what you will
My mother says to get a job
But she don't like the one she's got
    When masturbation's lost its fun
    You're fucking lonely

Bite my lip and close my eyes
    Take me away to paradise
I'm so damn bored, I'm going blind
    And loneliness has to suffice
Bite my lip and close my eyes
    Slipping away to paradise
Some say, "Quit or I'll go blind"
    But it's just a myth

  • This song is about being bored, lonely, and feeling like a complete loser. In an interview with VH1, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong said: "I was just in a creative rut. I was in-between houses sleeping on people's couches. It's a song about trying not to feel pathetic and lonely. I didn't think that masturbation was really seen from the point of view that I was looking at it. In songs like 'Turning Japanese' it always seemed more about people pulling a pud or something. I was coming from a lonely guy's perspective: No girlfriend, no life, complete loser."
  • The lyrics refer to masturbation as means of escape: "Take me away to paradise." Lead singer Billy Joe describes his masturbation habits at the time as "chronic."
  • This was the first Green Day single released on a major label: Reprise Records. This was not a hit, but their next single, "Basket Case," launched them to popularity. Before Dookie came out, Green Day released two albums on a small label.
  • In a 1995 Rolling Stone magazine interview, bassist Mike Dirnt revealed that he initially wrote the unique bass riff to this song while on an acid trip. The next day a sober Mike, along with Billie Joe, had a hard time remembering the riff they liked so much the night before. What became the song's bassline was what they could remember to the best of their ability. (thanks, George - Islip Terrace, NY)
  • Most radio stations aired the edited version with the line "I smell like sh-t" mumbled at the end.
  • True to the Punk style, most of Green Day's songs to this point were very short. This was one of their longest at 3:59. (thanks, Adrian - Wilmington, DE)
  • Green Day recorded the Dookie album at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. Their first attempts at recording "Longview" during these sessions didn't take, but they then went on tour with Bad Religion and performed the song every night, which helped them refine it. When the tour ended, they went back to Fantasy and recorded the proper version of the song.
  • A lot of consideration went into how this song would flow on the album. The open, which contrary to most Green Day tracks is built with a slow fade up, was designed to follow the previous Dookie track, "Chump," which gradually fades out after a brazen climax.
