Sukiyaki Lyrics

Let's look up as we walk, so that the tears don't spill
Remembering that spring day, that lonely night.
Let's look up as we walk, count the blurry stars
Remembering that summer day, that lonely night.

Happiness is above the clouds,
Happiness is above the skies.
Let's look up as we walk, so that the tears don't spill
Crying as we walk, that lonely night.
Remembering that autumn day, that lonely night.

Sadness is in the shadow of the clouds,
Sadness is in the shadow of the moon.
Let's walk with our head held up so that the tears don't spill,
Crying as we walk, that lonely night.

Sukiyaki Song Chart
  • This song has a remarkable story - it's a Japanese hit that became wildly popular in America despite Japanese lyrics that hardly anyone in the US could understand. Kyu Sakamoto was a star in Japan as both an actor and a singer, and this song, known in his country as "Ue O Muite Aruko," was a #1 hit there in 1961.

Sometime in 1962, a British music executive named Louis Benjamin heard the song when he was traveling in Japan, and he had his group Kenny Ball & his Jazzmen record an instrumental version that made it to #10 on the UK charts. Benjamin renamed the song "Sukiyaki" after a Japanese food he enjoyed - a one-pot dish made with sliced beef, tofu, noodles and vegetables.

The song made it to America when a disk jockey in Washington state heard the British version, and started playing the original by Sakamoto. He used the title "Sukiyaki," which was much more palatable to Americans than "Ue O Muite Aruko," and requests started pouring in for the song. Capitol Records obtained the American rights to the song and released it stateside, where it went to #1 on the Hot 100 for 3 weeks and also held the top spot on the Adult Contemporary chart for 5 weeks.

So how did this American disc jockey get a copy of the original song? Marsha Cunningham gave us the answer. She explained to us:
"In 1961-2 I was a high school student at The American School In Japan, living in Zushi, Japan. My dad was a pilot for Japan Airlines. While enjoying a Japanese movie staring Kyu Sakamoto, I heard the most unbelievably beautiful song. I purchased the record at a local shop and brought it back to the states the next year when I attended a girl's boarding school in Sierra Madre, CA. I played it in the dormitory frequently; everyone liked it. One girl took my record home with her on the weekend so her dad could play it on his radio station, and the rest is history!"
  • The Japanese lyrics are about sadness and isolation; the original title means "I look up when I walk."
  • In 1963, the Country singer Clyde Beavers arranged to have an official of the Japanese embassy (J.S. Shima) translate the lyrics into English. Although Beavers' "Sukiyaki" did not chart, A Taste of Honey made it to #3 in the US with their English lyric version in 1981. A Taste Of Honey was a Disco group who had a hit in 1978 with "Boogie Oogie Oogie." Their bass player/vocalist Janice Marie Johnson came up with the English lyrics for their version. She didn't translate the song literally, but kept the mood of the song with lyrics about a love that was taken away.
  • Kyu Sakamoto was one of 520 people who died in a Japan Airlines crash in 1985. He was 43.
  • Learn more about how this song came to America and what it's like to be an American in Japan in Song Images .
  • The R&B group 4 P.M. (For Positive Music) covered this in 1995 with the same English lyrics that A Taste Of Honey used. Their version went to #8 in the US.
  • This is the only song by a Japanese artist, and the only song with lyrics entirely in Japanese, to hit #1 in the United States.
  • This isn't the first foreign language song to hit #1 in America - that would be "Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu (Volare)" by Domenico Modugno in 1958. That one was in Italian and kept at least part of the original title.
  • Slick Rick boosted the chorus from the A Taste Of Honey version for an interlude in "La Di Da Di," his 1985 song with Doug E. Fresh.

    Keisha's Song (Her Pain) Lyrics

Fancy girls on Long Beach Blvd
Flagging down all of these flashy cars

    And Lord knows she's beautiful
Lord knows the usuals leaving a body sore
She take the little change she make to fix her nail cuticles,
Lipstick is suitable to make you fiend for more
    She play Mr. Shakur
That's her favorite rapper bumping "Brenda's Got A Baby"
While a pervert yelling at her and she capture features of a woman
But only 17, the 7 cars start honkin'
She start running like FLo-Jo don't care if they Joe Blow
If they got money to blow a blow job is a sure go
And sure enough don't see a dime of dirty dollars
She give all to her daddy but she don't know her father,
That's ironic see a block away from Lueders park, I seen the El Camino parked
In her heart she hate it there, but in her mind she made it where
Nothing really matters, so she hit the back seat
Rosa Parks never a factor when she making ends meet

Fancy girls on Long Beach Blvd
Flagging down all of these flashy cars

    And Lord knows she's beautiful
Lord knows the usuals, leaving a body sore
Her anatomy is God's temple, and it's quite simple
Her castle is about to be destroyed, she's always paranoid
Watching the law inside the streets undercover the dummies that look like decoys
Remember the sergeant let her slide,
Said if he seen what's between her thighs he'd compromise,
To no surprise she took the ultimatum around the alleyway and gave him
A warm welcome to fill him right below the navel
Though he was wired up like a pair of jumping cables
His eyes was closed shut, prior charges, he had waived 'em
It was a block away from Lueders Park, I seen a squad car parked
And in her heart, she hate it there but in her mind, she made it where
Nothing really matters, so she hit the back seat
Cause Rosa Parks never a factor when she topping off police

Fancy girls on Long Beach Blvd
Flagging down all of these flashy cars

    And Lord knows she's beautiful
Lord knows the usuals, leaving a body sore
As she bust down like a 12 bunk on tour
She suddenly realized she'll never escape the allure
Of the black man, white man, needed satisfaction, at first
It became a practice, but now she's numb to it
Sometimes she wonder if she can do it like nuns do it
But she never heard of Catholic religion or sinners' redemption
That sounds foolish, and you can blame it on her mother
For letting her boyfriend slide candy under her cover
Ten months before she was ten he moved in and that's when he touched her
This muthafucka is the fucking reason why Keisha rushing through that
Block away from Lueders park, I seen a El Camino park
And in her heart she hate it there but in her mind, she made it where
Nothing really matters, so she hit the back seat
And caught a knife inside the bladder, left her dead, raped in the street Keisha's song

My little sister eleven, I looked her right in the face
The day that I wrote this song, set her down and pressed play

Fancy girls on Long Beach Blvd
Flagging down all of these flashy cars
Fancy girls on Long Beach Blvd oh
Flagging down all of these flashy cars

This song, which tells the tragic story of the prostitute Keisha's demise was recorded by Kendrick Lamar for his little sister, as a warning to never become a hooker.
  • The cut was inspired by a real 17-year-old girl that Lamar knew. The teenage prostitute was his friend's younger sister, and right after he saw her standing on a block selling her body, he went home and wrote the song.

    On Broadway (on Broadway)
They say there's always magic in the air (on Broadway)
But when you're walkin' down that street

How ya gonna make some time

    On Broadway Song Chart
  • "On Broadway" was a collaboration between the familiar songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and the also-successful team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. As such, it represents an especially distilled example of the "Brill Building sound." However, as Leiber and Stoller, and even such music scholars as Al Kooper and Ken Emerson, are hasty to remind us, the "Brill Building sound" actually came from 1650 Broadway as much as it did from 1619 Broadway (the address of the actual Brill Building). Weil and Mann worked out of 1650; Leiber and Stoller at 1619.
  • Pay attention to the instrumentals and vocals here. The Drifters were a cross-over from doo-wop to R&B, with the vocals striking a balance here. The music has a hint of soul with a large production number, and that intrusive guitar kicking in towards the end gives a nod to rockabilly. At this time, Motown was just firing up with its new soul sound, and Mike Stoller reports in Hound Dog: The Leiber & Stoller Autobiography , "Some say Sam Cooke invented soul music in the fifties, and some say Ray Charles. Some say soul didn't come about until later, in the sixties, with the advent of Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. Others have told us that our productions for the Drifters began it all. Who can say?"

It's no surprise, then, that Berry Gordy came to see Jerry Leiber at his Brill Building office right before this song came out. Explaining that he wanted to make R&B more appealing to whites by softening the sound, he played some demo tapes for Leiber. Gordy then offered him a partnership. But Leiber turned him down, telling him, "You don't need me. You have everything you need. Just go back to Detroit and do it."
  • Phil Spector was an apprentice to Leiber and Stoller at the time, and he played the guitar solo on this. Spector learned many of his production techniques watching Leiber and Stoller produce The Drifters.
  • This was one of the last Drifters songs featuring lead singer Rudy Lewis, who replaced Ben E. King in 1961. Lewis died of a heart attack in 1964.
  • George Benson's cover version was a #7 US hit in 1978.
  • Gary Numan did a synthesizer-driven cover in 1979. Other artists to cover the song include Neil Young, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Bobby Darin and Sly & the Family Stone.
  • This song was used in TV commercials for Radio Free Europe in the early '60s. (thanks, Jim - Boston, MA)

You walk in six gun style
Put another bullet in the chamber with your smile

You move in and you don't stop
Till your pretty little finger pulls the trigger and the hammer drops

Love for you is like a wild west movie
You always end up on the run
You draw quick and your aim is deadly
And then you ride off in the sun
Someday I hope you find a Faster Gun

    Cold steel, gun powder kiss
Livin' for the taste of new blood on your lips

Your high noon is a midnight moon
Puttin' every Jesse James to shame with your gunshot wound

Love for you is like a wild west movie
You always end up on the run
You draw quick and your aim is deadly
And then you ride off in the sun
Someday I hope you find a faster gun

Somebody gonna come along and shoot you
    Like you shot me down
Somebody gonna come along and shoot you down

Somebody gonna come along and shoot you
    Like you shot me down
Somebody gonna come along and shoot you down

Love for you is like a wild west movie
You always end up on the run
You draw quick and your aim is deadly
And then you ride off in the sun
(Somebody gonna come along and shoot you down)

This being Georgia, he gets a gun and sets out to kill Andy, but when he gets there Andy is already dead. The police show up, arrest him for killing Andy and he is hanged. The singer then reveals that she is the man's sister and that she shot Andy and also killed her brother's wife.
  • This was the only hit for Lawrence. She was an actress on The Carol Burnett Show and starred in Mama's Family. She briefly had her own talk show, called Vicki!
  • This was written by Bobby Russell, who was Lawrence's husband at the time. They divorced soon after this was released. Russell also wrote "Honey," which was a hit in 1968 for Bobby Goldsboro. He died of a heart attack in 1992.
  • Russell didn't think much of this song when he wrote it, and couldn't find anyone to record it. Lawrence liked it and recorded a demo of it. Producer Snuff Garrett decided she should do the song and recorded it with her.

  • The title is French for "My Dearest Love."
  • Wonder wrote this song in 1967 when he was a student at Michigan School for the Blind, recording a rough version and putting into his trusty "tape box," where he kept his song ideas. He wrote the song for his girlfriend at the time, Marcia, and the song was originally titled "Oh My Marcia."

By the time he recorded the song, Marcia was out of the picture, so Wonder changed the title to "My Cherie Amour."
  • Motown songwriter/producers Henry Cosby and Sylvia Moy wrote this with Wonder, who was 19 at the time. Wonder was recording at age 12, and was writing songs in his teenage years. On his later hits, Wonder did almost all of the writing and production himself, but early on, he had a lot of help from the Motown staff.
  • This was first released as the B-side of Wonder's single "I Don't Know Why (I Love You)" in January 1969. Many disc jockeys flipped the single and played "My Cherie Amour," so Motown reissued the single with the sides reversed. In July 1969, "My Cherie Amour," reached its US peak of #4 on the Hot 100, and in August, the song was used as the title track to Wonder's album.
  • This song plays a part in the 2012 movie Silver Linings Playbook. Bradley Cooper's character, Pat, goes off the rails when he comes home to find his wife cheating on him while this song - their wedding song - is playing. From that point on, the song becomes a trigger for Pat, who loses his mind when he hears it.

In the book the film was adapted from, it's a different song that makes Pat go crazy: "Songbird" by Kenny G.

  • This was the first song written for the project. Frontman Chad Gilbert explained to MTV News why they titled the record after this cut: "Through resurrection, most things come back better and stronger, and you learn a lot," he said. "Even for me, as a personal thing — I remember my dad passed away, and coming out of that at the time was such a hard moment in my life. But now I can be there for so many people since I've lived it."

"With our record, it felt kind of like the perfect thing to say 'Hey, we're the same band, but we're acknowledging there was a point in our career where there was a switch,' he continued. "But now we feel better and stronger, and so far, based on the reception of the new album and this tour, I feel like our fans are really feeling that, which is cool."

  • Scaggs wrote this song with the keyboard player David Paich , who would later form the band Toto and write many of their hits. "Lowdown" was the first song that Scaggs and Paich wrote together; it was Silk Degrees producer Joe Wissert who put them together.

In our interview with Boz Scaggs , he explained: "We took off for a weekend to this getaway outside of LA where there was a piano and stayed up all night banging around ideas. We hit on 'Lowdown,' and then we brought it back to the band and recorded it. We were just thrilled with that one. That was the first song that we attempted, and it had a magic to it."
  • This was the second single released from Silk Degrees. The first was "It's Over," which charted at a modest #38 in May 1976. Scaggs had little name recognition at the time, and sales were stagnant for the album until an R&B radio station in Cleveland started playing "Lowdown." Other stations followed suit, and it quickly became clear that the song had crossover appeal and hit potential. Scaggs' label, CBS, released it as a single and it climbed to #3 on the Hot 100 in October, spurring sales of the album along the way.
  • The song is about a girl who doesn't appreciate what her man gives her. The "dirty lowdown" is the honest truth - what Scaggs is encouraging this poor sap to face.

The word "Lowdown" was popular slang meaning a summary of what's going on for real. The first Hot 100 entry with the term in the title came in 1969 with the instrumental "Lowdown Popcorn" by James Brown (#41, 1969). Next came Chicago's song "Lowdown" (#35, 1971).
  • Along with keyboard player David Paich, two other future Toto members also played on this track: drummer Jeff Porcaro and bass player David Hungate. The Silk Degrees marked the first time that Scaggs used these studio pros, and it was also his first album produced by Joe Wissert, who was a staff producer at Columbia Records who had previously worked with Earth, Wind & Fire.

The crew for the album found just the right sound, a Disco-blend that could play in dance clubs and pool halls. Scaggs credits Wissert for giving him and the other musicians plenty of freedom in the studio, resulting in one of the most successful albums of the '70s - Silk Degrees went on to sell over five million copies.
  • This won the Grammy for Best R&B Song of 1976, making Scaggs the first white artist to win the award (Leo Sayer was the second, taking the trophy the next year for "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing.")
  • The producers of Saturday Night Fever asked to use this in their movie, but Scaggs' manager turned them down and instead used it in the movie Looking For Mr. Goodbar. Not a good move - Saturday Night Fever became one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time.

Wallow in the winter of it
    Discover what you truly covet
    Underneath and far above it
You slither in all kinds of shit
How could you forget about it?
Did you think you could minimize?
This is the age of consent
You’ll get a day in the sun before I kill your fucking lights
    Burn up in your atmosphere
Burn up in your utmost fear
    Desecrate your temples
    Only hell and hate remain
Don’t look for crows to scatter
    Prepare for judgment day

    We are kill gods
    The kings are falling down
Can I find a way to get there?
Bury your head in the ground
Will you falsify for your fair share?
    When it’s done, it’s done
    Plus negative one
It’s everybody’s guess but the apathy won
Will you come testify in the court of myopic opinion
Or will you settle for oblivion?

    We are kill gods

We, we make the world worth saving
Are, are you prepared to believe?
Kill, kill everything that kills you
Gods, live long and die for me

Rape crutch and sick in the middle of an evidence bag that’ll never obey
All these years spent hiding all the bodies
I can never be sure but I remember the graves!

    We are kill gods
We, we make the world worth saving
Are, are you prepared to believe?

  • Taylor explained the meaning of the lyric "We are kill gods." "Basically (it) means that we destroy everything in our path that tries to bring us down," he said, "and this band is fairly notorious for rewriting its own history."

"We killed the images behind us," he added, "and recreate them going forward."

Don't Stand So Close To Me Lyrics

    Young teacher, the subject
    Of schoolgirl fantasy
    She wants him so badly
Knows what she wants to be

    Inside her there's longing
    This girl's an open page
Book marking, she's so close now
This girl is half his age

    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't Stand So Close To Me
    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me

    Her friends are so jealous
You know how bad girls get
    Sometimes it's not so easy
    To be the teacher's pet

    Temptation, frustration
So bad it makes him cry
    Wet bus stop, she's waiting
His car is warm and dry

    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me

    Loose talk in the classroom
To hurt they try and try
    Strong words in the staffroom
    The accusations fly

It's no use, he sees her
He starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in
    That book by Nabakov

    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me

    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
    Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me

  • This song is about a teacher who lusts after one of his students. Sting was a teacher before joining The Police. After a lot of speculation, Sting denied that this came from any personal experience on the DVD for his 2001 All This Time album. (thanks, Tiffany - Castro Valley, CA)
  • The line "Just like the old man in the book by Nabokov" refers to the novel Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, which is about an older man who pursues underage girls. Sting based this song on the book. Sting mispronounces the author's name - the "bo" should be stressed. Also, in the novel Lolita, Humbert is not quite an old man. (thanks, Martin - London, United Kingdom)
  • The Police recorded this over a period of months. The song started as a Hammond organ-based Soul track then evolved through various complex arrangements, until it was eventually reduced to it's simplest elements.
  • This sold 900,000 copies and was the best selling single of 1980 in the UK.
  • This won the 1981 Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Group.
  • The Police reunited in 1986 to record updated versions of some of their old songs. The reunion brought out old hostilities, and this was the only song they completed. The new version was released as a single titled "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86," and included on their greatest hits album Every Breath You Take - The Singles.
  • In 1985, Sting worked with Dire Straits on "Money For Nothing," which has a chorus that sounds very similar to this (compare the lines "Don't stand so close to me" with "I want my MTV"). Sting did not want a songwriting credit, but his record company thought he should get one so they could receive royalties.
  • This was featured on Friends in the episode "The One Where Underdog Gets Away." Joey was on a poster for Venereal Disease treatment, and the song was played when they showed all the posters all over New York City. (thanks, matt - Milton, PA)
  • The race horse Zenyatta is named after the album Zenyatta Mondatta. The horse is owned by Jerry Moss, who signed The Police to his label A&M Records.
  • This is an example of Sting's "work-backward" method. "I pluck a title from the air, just free-associating, and then try to figure out a story that it could apply to," he wrote in Lyrics By Sting. Fascinated by the dangerous obsession at the center of Nabokov's novel, he "transposed this idea to a relationship between a teacher and his pupil. Wanting by this time to identify whatever my sources were, I conspired to get the author's name into the song with one of the loosest rhymes in the history of pop. Well, I thought it was hilarious, but I caught some flak."
  • This was used on The Simpsons episode "On a Clear Day I Can't See My Sister" (2005), on The Office (US) episode "Casino Night" (2006), and on the Glee episode "Ballad" (2009).

    Killpop Lyrics

She’s sticking needles in her skin
I turn with an ugly grin
Her canvas doesn’t leave a lot to fantasy
But her peace of mind can’t stay inside the lines
It’s so confusing, the methods that she’s using
She knows she shouldn’t leave a mark that I can see
Will she ever find one million of a kind?
It’s cold and lonely, but that’s because she told me
    Lost inside her dirty world,
No one hurts this pretty girl but her
    Oh, she’s beautiful
A little better than a man deserves
    Oh, I’m not insane
Please tell me she won’t change

Maybe I SHOULD LET HER GO
But ONLY WHEN SHE LOVES ME
How CAN I JUST LET HER GO?
    Not UNTIL SHE LOVES ME

    She’s drowning in herself again
My God, what a lovely sin
I guess there’s nothing left to do, but have my way

She can feel it’s right so she doesn’t close her eyes
She smiles and answers it doesn’t seem to matter
Lost inside my dirty head, something tells me I’m the one who’s kept
    Oh, so volatile
A little better than a man defiled
    Oh, I need the pain
Please tell me she won’t change

Maybe I SHOULD LET HER GO
But ONLY WHEN SHE LOVES ME
How CAN I JUST LET HER GO?
    Not UNTIL SHE LOVES ME

We were meant to be together
Now die and fucking love me
We were meant to hurt each other
Now die and fucking love me
    Die and fucking love me
    Die and fucking love me
    Die and fucking love me

  • This song is about the big changes that the band has seen in the six years since they released All Hope Is Gone and lost their bassist Paul Gray. Corey Taylor explained to Kerrang!: "It's basically trying to deal with this love-hate situation that we have, with not only the business side of it, but just the way that the game is played."

"We are great students of the game, but at the same time it's like there were so many people who want to take advantage of the fact that people pour into their hearts into this industry, and their love and creativity into the music, and they tried to take advantage of that," he continued. "This is us trying to make peace with the evils that can come with that. The vultures are definitely circling the meat half the time."
  • Speaking with the WGRD 97.9 FM radio station in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Corey Taylor expanded on the track's meaning. "The song is my reflection on my relationship with music," he said. "That's who the 'she' is. And not just music, but the music industry in general. So there's a love-hate relationship there that really kind of comes into view."

"There's the old adage, 'Be careful what you wish for,' and, 'Be careful doing what you love, because sometimes it will turn on you.' And, you know, anytime you mix something that you love and business, you're gonna find the rusty cracks in there that piss you off," Taylor continued. "So that song, really, is about how much I still love making music, but also how much I just hate the business side, the numbers side, the people in the suits who try to run stuff, and having to deal with them and having to learn how to talk to them."

"And, you know, it's frustrating sometimes, but it is what it is," he concluded. "And luckily, we got a great song out of it, and we were able to really paint something really cool with it and just be able to put it out there for people to dig."
