Everybody Hurts Song Chart
  • Most of this song was written by R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry. He quit the band in 1997 shortly before recording their album Up. After that album, the band almost broke up, but decided to continue as a trio. Berry became a farmer.
  • This is an anti-suicide song. Berry wanted to reach out to people who felt they had no hope.
  • On many R.E.M. songs, Michael Stipe purposefully sings indecipherably. He sang very clearly on this, however, because he didn't want his message getting lost. "I don't remember singing it," he noted in Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011, "but I still kind of can't believe my voice is on this recording. It's very pure. This song instantly belonged to everyone except us, and that honestly means the world to me."
  • While Berry wrote this, he did not actually play on it. A Univox drum machine took care of that for him. R.E.M. bass player Mike Mills claims he bought the drum machine for $20, but it was perfect for the song's "metronome-ish feel." He told Pulse magazine in 1992: "Mike (Stipe) and I cut it live with this dumb drum machine which is just as wooden as you can get. We wanted to get this flow around that: human and non-human at the same time."
  • The string arrangement was done by Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.
  • The Nevada legislature commended R.E.M. for "encouraging the prevention of teen suicides," noting this as an example. Nevada has a high rate of teen suicide.
  • The music video was directed by Jake Scott, son of movie director Ridley Scott, famous for movies like Blade Runner (1982) and Gladiator (2000). Filmed on Interstate 10 in San Antonio, Texas, the clip is set during a traffic jam where people's thoughts are revealed through subtitles.
  • The album title was inspired by Weaver D's soul food diner in Athens, Georgia. When you ordered food there, they answered by saying "automatic." They had a sign that said "Delicious Fine Foods - Automatic For The People."
  • A very moving mix of this song was made using sound bites from the 9-11 disaster. (thanks, Andy - Halifax, England)
  • This was used on an episode of The Simpsons when Marge is walking in a thunderstorm and thinks she has no friends. (thanks, Dawson - Draper, UT)
  • Peter Buck wrote in the liner notes of the album In Time - The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003 that "the reason the lyrics are so atypically straightforward is because it was aimed at teenagers."
  • In February 2010 a charity cover was recorded by a collection of artists, Helping Haiti, to raise money for the victims of the earthquake that devastated the country. It sold over 200,000 copies in its first two days making it one of the quickest selling singles of the 21st century in the United Kingdom.
  • This topped a poll compiled by PRS For Music, which collects and pays royalties to musicians in the UK, of the songs most likely to make a grown man cry. Second in the list came Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" followed by Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." PRS chairman Ellis Rich said: "From this chart, it is clear that a well-written tear-jerker is one that people can relate to and empathise with. It is this lyrical connection that can reach deep down emotionally and move even the strongest of men."
  • In a rare authorized comedic use of this song, Mayim Bialik's character on The Big Bang Theory plays this on the harp when she is upset over being left behind by her two girlfriends, who are shopping for bridesmaids dresses. Her "boyfriend," played by Jim Parsons, comes by to cheer her up, resulting in an awkward cuddle scene.
  • Peter Buck likens the vibe of this song to Otis Redding's "Pain in My Heart." He wrote in the liner notes for Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011: "I'm not sure if Michael would have copped that reference, but to a lot of our fans it was a Staxxy-type thing."
  • This was used in the 1992 film version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starring Kristy Swanson, Luke Perry and Rutger Hauer. Speaking of the subsequent TV series, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Peter Buck said: "I've never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but the idea that high school is a portal to hell seems pretty realistic to me."

  • Presley penned this song with Sarah Siskind, who has also written for Alison Krauss. It finds her venting about her no-good former hubby. "I had gotten pregnant three months after knowing my ex-husband," she recalled to Radio.com . "We were both wild, living the artist lifestyle and I got pregnant and I grew up and he really struggled with it. He just couldn't do it. I went to write that day and I just started venting to [Siskind] because a lot of times writing appointments that's like our therapy. We can't really afford therapy at that stage in our career so we are literally each others' therapists."

The writing session found Presley expressing her anger to Siskund about her ex. "I'm in there and I'm going, 'I don't know. I've read all these books and I bought a nightgown.' He was a drinker. He loved his beer and he just couldn't figure out how to not do it," she explained. "'I buy the groceries, I wear my lipstick.' And [Siskind's] sitting there going, 'You know that's our song.' And I'm like, 'I'm not writing a song, I just came here to talk."

    Private Dancer Lyrics

All the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You don't look at their faces
And you don't ask their names
You don't think of them as human
You don't think of them at all
You keep your mind on the money
Keeping your eyes on the wall

I'm your Private Dancer, a dancer for money
I'll do what you want me to do
I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
And any old music will do

I want to make a million dollars
I want to live out by the sea
Have a husband and some children
    Yeah, I guess I want a family
All the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You don't look at their faces
And you don't ask their names

I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
I'll do what you want me to do
I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
And any old music will do

I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
I'll do what you want me to do
I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
And any old music will do

    Deutch marks or dollars
American Express will do nicely, thank you
Let me loosen up your collar
Tell me, do you want to see me do the shimmy again?

I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
I'll do what you want me to do
I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
And any old music will do

All the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You don't look at their faces
And you don't ask their names
You don't think of them as human

And any old music will do

I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money

  • This song is about either a prostitute or stripper who prefers to consider herself a "Private Dancer." It describes how empty she feels inside. It was an unlikely title track to Turner's wildly successful comeback album, as the subject matter didn't relate to the singer's life or her return to fame.
  • Mark Knopfler wrote this song for his band Dire Straits, but realized that it didn't work with a guy singing it, so he pitched it to Turner, who was beginning her comeback. In a 2004 interview with her fan club, Tina Turner described her reaction when Knopfler played her the song: "Mark said this song is not for a man, it's a girl's song. He recorded it but won't use it so when he put the demo on, he sung 'I'm a private dancer, dancer for money, do what you want me to do,' I told him, 'I think you're right, it's not a song for a guy. I liked it a lot. I wasn't sure whether the girl was a hooker or a very classical private dancer but I thought I'd take it."
  • Members of Dire Straits played on this track, including their bass player John Illsley and drummer Terry Williams. Jeff Beck played the guitar solo, as Mark Knopfler did not perform on it.

    Missed Lyrics

    You think you're Missed,
Well let me tell you this,
The love I felt for you,
    Has flown away

    And now you see,
    What you've done to me
So all I can ask is why, why
You made us feel like one,
I should've known that you were wrong.

Oh yeah, you did it on your own,
    Now you got to go,
Oh no, I won't let you get me down,
You tried to hurt my feelings,
    You stopped me dreaming,
But here I draw the line,
I wish you luck in life and goodbye

    You let me think,
That you were so so true
    Lows, lies, truth cannot lie
    You wanted to go,
From a high straight down to a low

    But all excuses here,
    The reasons, they're, they're everywhere
    Chasing rainbows can be fun
Been chasing you for so long

Oh yeah, you did it on your own,
    Now you got to go,
Oh no, I won't let you get me down,
You tried to hurt my feelings,
    You stopped me dreaming,
But here I draw the line,
I wish you luck in life and goodbye
    Oh
    Ooh

  • This was the ballad that made Ella a breakout sensation on The X Factor. She sang it at her first audition, wowing the public and her performance subsequently received more than eight million hits on YouTube.
  • The song was inspired by Ella's late grandad, Bill, who died in the middle of the night from lung cancer when she was nine years old. She never went to visit him in hospital or attended his funeral, which the singer now regrets. "One day I was on the piano and was feeling very angry and emotional, I was having a down day," Ella told The Daily Record. "I started trying to write down lyrics and I got a melody in my head. Then I realised I was using this raw emotion from when I didn't get to say goodbye to my grandad."
  • Ella Henderson explained to Artist Direct how her grandfather influenced this tune. "Lyrically, the song is about hope, regret, and redemption," she said. "My grandfather is a massive influence on me in terms of music. He taught me so much. I respected so much."

"When I was talking about him because I sang that song, and it was so emotional, they were drawn together," Henderson continued." It became the song I write about my granddad. I did think about it deeply. It can relate in one way because I did have a lot of resentment for never attending his funeral. It's about holding something and not letting go. I love him so much though it wasn't about that."

  • Neil Young wrote this about actress Carrie Snodgress, who was his girlfriend at the time. They had a child together named Zeke, who was born with cerebral palsy. They broke up a few years later and things didn't go well for Snodgress. She spent a lot of time caring for Zeke and went was never able to get her acting career back on track. She died in 2004.
  • Jack Nitzsche, who played piano with The Rolling Stones and wrote soundtracks for many famous movies, produced this track. He dated Snodgress a few years after she broke up with Young and was sentenced to probation after he beat her with a handgun in 1979.
  • The London Symphony Orchestra plays on the album version of the song, as well as several others off of Harvest.
  • Some people were upset with the characterization of a woman as a "Maid," but the song meant no disrespect - Young wrote it in the spirit of the Robin Hood tale Maid Marion.

Critics have also interpreted the song as being more complex than it initially appears. Rather than being a straightforward expression of how badly a "man needs a maid," it's a heartbroken narrator trying to convince himself that he could be happy with something simple and emotionless - rather than the rocky ups-and-downs of a real relationship. The line "To live a love/you have to be part of it" hints at him realizing how this is an empty sentiment only concocted to try to ward off heartbreak.
  • Neil Young fell in love with Carrie Snodgress after seeing her in a movie on television, which inspired the lyric, "I fell in love with the actress, she was playing a part that I could understand." Learn more about Young and Snodgress in Song Images . (thanks, Nicole - Massapequa, NY)
  • British singer–songwriter Rumer covered this for the special edition of her Boys Don't Cry album. She explained to Q magazine why the song feels like a commentary on why, early in 2011, she broke up with A&R man Sam Winwood. (Rumer had lived with Winwood for several years). "As a travelling musician I couldn't take care of myself," she said. "Letters pile up, dishes pile up, you're not doing anything properly. So you're desperate to be taken care of. Emotionally, you're like a beggar going from door to door, but you can't give anything back. There's a line in the song, 'When will I see you again?' Well, I don't know. I can't commit. My ex-boyfriend said he felt like a field surgeon - putting me back together again."

    No I'm not a liar
Just didn't know how to tell you the truth
    All we need is time
We don't know why we do what we do
    But we do

    On a night like this
Just don't know what I'm trying to prove
    No we can't predict
The reasons why we do what we do
But we do, but we do
Yeah we do what we do
Yeah we do what we do
Yeah we do what we do

    When you fall in love
You can't help it when you act like a fool
    When you look above
You see the reasons why we do what we do
What we do, what we do
Yeah we do what we do
Yeah we do what we do
Yeah we do what we do

Ain't got a shotglass in my fist
To spill it away on my business
    Telling these strangers about you
I'm getting too, I'm getting too, I'm getting too
    Personal, getting too personal
    I'm getting too personal, personal
    Personal with you

    Now I'm wondering
They can tell that I've been crying all night?
    'Cause I told myself
    I don't love you, though I know it's a lie
    'Cause I do

    When you fall in love
You can't help it when you act like a fool
    When you look above
You see the reasons why we do what we do

Ain't got a shotglass in my fist
To spill it away on my business
    Telling these strangers about you
I'm getting too, I'm getting too, I'm getting too
    Personal, getting too personal
    I'm getting too personal, personal
    Personal with you

Hear me out, hear me out right now, hey
Hear me out, hear me out now, hey
You've been running through my mind all day
Hear me out now, hear me baby

Hear me out, hear me out right now, hey
Hear me out, hear me out now, hey
You've been running through my mind all day
Hear me out now, hear me baby

    Shotglass in my fist
So spill it away on my business
    Telling these strangers about you
I'm getting too, I'm getting too, I'm getting too
    Personal, getting too personal
    I'm getting too personal, personal

  • This tender ballad finds Jessie singing about a doomed relationship in which she finds herself "crying all night." The song was written by "Refill" singer Elle Varner and Canadian singer-songwriter Jenna Andrews. Jessie co-penned most of the songs on her first two albums but is credited on only five of Sweet Talker's 12 songs. She told Digital Spy : "I would never sing a song that I don't feel like I haven't lived the shoes in. I am a fan of the writers."

"It's a constant cycle of inspiration so like, for example, when I heard 'Fire' and when I heard 'Personal', these are songs that I have lived and so I added my input on the lyric and changed some of the things to really make it suitable for me, to feel comfortable to sing it.," Jessie added. "And it was an amazing experience to be able to let go like that."

    I Did It Lyrics

I'm mixing up a bunch of magic stuff
A magic mushroom cloud of care
A potion that will rock the boat will rock
Make a bomb of love and blow it up

    I Did It
Do you think I've gone too far
    I did it
    Guilty as charged
    I did it
It was me right or wrong
    I did it Yeah

I never did a single thing that did a single thing to
Change the ugly ways of the world
I didn't know it felt so right inside
    I didn't know at all
Open up the curtains I heard sirens there the lights flash and crawl
I did it justice I just did it for us all

It's a nickel or a dime for what I've done
The truth is that I don't really care
For such a lovely crime I'll do the time
You better lock me up I'll do it again

    I did it
Do you think I've gone too far
    I did it
    Guilty as charged
    I did it

Open up the curtains I heard sirens there the lights flash and crawl
I did it justice I just did it for the buzz

All you people are the skewers of our dreams
Like the cat that collared me
Oh what I gotta say to you got love don't
    Turn it down
    Turn it loud
    Let it build
We got a long way to go
    But you gotta start somewhere
Go door to door spread the love you got
    You got the love
    You get what you want
Does it matter where you get it from
    I for one
Don't turn my cheek for anyone
Unturn your cheek to give your love
    Love to grow

    I did it
Do you think I've gone too far
    I did it
    Guilty as charged
    I did it

    Was me right or wrong
    I did it
    Yeah
    I did it
I told you I told you I told you I told
    I did it

  • This song is about a man who falls in love with a prostitute. Sting got the idea after walking through the red-light district of Paris when the band was in town to play a club called The Nashville. He imagined what it would be like to fall in love with one of the prostitutes.
  • This was the first major-label release by The Police, who were struggling at the time. A year earlier, they released the single "Fall Out" on an independent label owned by Stewart Copeland's brother (and the band's manager), Miles. It was a flop, and the group felt a lot of pressure to produce something that would keep them off the dole.

When they convened at Surrey Sound Studios outside of London in January 1978, they recorded the song with producer Nigel Gray, who owned the studio. Sting liked the song but didn't think it would be a hit, as it was far more brooding than their other material. Miles Copeland thought differently - he was far more impressed with "Roxanne" than with anything else they recorded at those sessions, and insisted it be the single. Miles got a distribution deal for the song with A&M Records, getting no advance, only royalties from sales.

The song was released in the UK on April 7, but didn't garner much attention. It was also largely ignored in the US when it was released there on February 24, 1979, but The Police soldiered on with a tour of America anyway. When a disc jockey in Austin stared playing the song, it got a great response and other radio stations added it to their playlists. The song became a minor hit, peaking at #32 on April 28. The song also got some attention in the UK around this time, and it made #12 about a year after it was first released.
  • The intro to the song contains one of the great happy accidents in rock history. There was an upright piano in the studio, which Sting sat on thinking the lid was closed. Tape was rolling for his vocal, so the sound of his butt hitting the piano and his subsequent laughter were recorded. These sounds were mixed into the intro, providing a unique texture.
  • Sting chose the name Roxanne because it has a rich history behind it. Roxanne was the name of Alexander The Great's wife and Cyrano de Bergerac's girlfriend.
  • Police guitarist Andy Summers made a key contribution to this song. In our interview with Summers , he explained: "'Roxanne' is so identified by that guitar at the beginning - the first verse before he starts singing. It's immediately identifiable."
  • The Police performed this when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. With the exception of a drunken jam at Sting's wedding in 1992, it was the first time they played together since they broke up in 1986 over personal differences. At the ceremony, guitarist Andy Summers joked, "I'd like to make it very clear that there is no ego in our band whatsoever."
  • The beat on this song is a classic fusion of rock and reggae, but Sting considers is more of a tango.
  • In 1987, Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah starred in the movie Roxanne, which is based on the Cyrano DeBergerac story of a dramatist with a big nose who falls for a beautiful woman. The song was not used in the film.
  • A remake of this song was featured in the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge. Christian (Ewan McGregor) sings this about Satine (Nicole Kidman) when he becomes enraged in a fit of jealousy. And guess what? They made it into a tango, so this song can no longer be mistaken for a reggae beat... Sting must be very proud. (thanks, Kristy - La Porte City, IA)
  • Sting performs this at most of his concerts, as it's one of his favorites and it always gets a great audience response. He played it at Live Aid in 1985.
  • In the 1982 movie 48 Hours, Eddie Murphy sings a very off-key version of the song in a jail cell.
  • This song is the basis for a popular drinking game of the same title: men drink when it says "Roxanne," women drink when it says "Red Light." (thanks, Alex - Charleston, WV)
  • When The Police reunited in 2007, their first public performance came at the Grammy Awards, where they played this to open the show.
  • A version by San Francisco singer-songwriter Juliet Simms debuted at #86 on the Hot 100 in April 2012 after she performed the song on the reality music show The Voice.
  • The original sheet of lyrics for this song is decorated with Sting's random doodles, most dealing with the passage of time. They are "three clocks - one at five to four, another at ten past six, and one sidelong that looks to be showing eight o'clock - a sundial, an hourglass, five sets of five-bar gates that prisoners use to mark the passing of days, some kind of whirlwind vortex spinning in the top right-hand corner, and a spear or an arrowhead. I imagine I was drawing these as I was listening back to various takes of the vocals, but I don't know what they mean," Sting wrote in Lyrics By Sting. (These illustrations can be seen on the back cover of the book).
  • "I sing 'Roxanne' every night," Sting told Daniel Rachel for the 2013 book The Art of Noise: Conversations with Great Songwriters. "There's always a little inflection that is new or a possibility that opens it out. It's not my job to reproduce a record that was made thirty years ago. I use that and I respect that, but it's only a template. It's that jazz mentality. You use the head of the song just as a starting point."

    Pain Killer Lyrics

    Don't need no whiskey
When I've had a bad day
    No prescription honey
    When my skies are grey

    No poppin' the pills
    No smokin' the pills
    That make me feel okay
But you go down easy baby
I could drink you by the case

    You're my painkiller
A little dose of you goes a long long way
    You're my painkiller
Oh will you take it away
    You take it away

    Don't need no fixin'
    I don't need no therapy
    You're love drunk kissin'
    Is my kinda remedy
    You're always lookin' to fall
You're like the hair of the dog
    When I'm feelin' cursed
    Don't need no doctor honey
    I don't need no nurse

    You're my painkiller
A little dose of you goes a long long way
    You're my painkiller
    Oh you take it away
    You take it away
    Oh you take it away
    You take it away

Ah la la la la la la la
    Ooh ooh
La la la la la la la
    Ooh ooh
La la la la la la la
    Ooh oh
La la la la la la la
    Ooh ooh

You're my (la la la) painkiller (ooh ooh)
You're my (la la la) painkiller (ooh ooh)

    Hey you're my painkiller
A little dose of you goes a long long way
    You're my painkiller
    Oh you take it away
    You take it away
    Oh you take it away
    You take it away

  • The title track of Little Big Town's sixth album, the quartet knew they were going to name the record after this tune way on into the recording process. "That song is really kind of tongue-in-cheek — 'be the person that numbs my pain,'" Karen Fairchild told Rolling Stone Country. "We started talking about tying that thread through the whole record, to ease your pain. Don't we want the whole record to do that for people, anyway? Whether it's a sad moment, or a song that's more thoughtful and has a lot more substance in the lyric, we want music to take us away. Pain Killer fits, that's the common thread through all the songs."
  • The song's Roger Pistile-directed music video was filmed at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, where the Painkiller drink was invented.

The clip shows the Little Big Town quartet singing underwater. "We've done so much over the years, it's hard to find something new that we've never done before, and this we've never done before. We've never sang all glammed up under water," said the band's Kimberly Schlapman. "It is a little more difficult. The hardest part is staying underwater instead of poppin' up and floatin'. That was the biggest challenge."

Karen Fairchild added: "Especially when you have on full gowns in the water. You might not be able to tell that, but…Kimberly and I had on like full gowns and then we got into the water. Roger Pistole did such a great job. He's a great, creative director."
  • Little Big Town's Phillip Sweet said of the song: "It's not what you think it would sound like when you hear the word 'pain killer.' You think, 'Oh, this is going to be like a ballad or a heart wrenching country song,' but it's so not that. It's amazingly fun."

"Every time I hear it, it just puts me in the right mood. It puts me in the – it's basically a love song. It's about how much you love that other person in your life and they are your pain killer."

Back On The Chain Gang Lyrics

I FOUND A PICTURE OF YOU, OH OH OH OH
WHAT HIJACKED MY WORLD THAT NIGHT
TO A PLACE IN THE PAST
WE'VE BEEN CAST OUT OF? OH OH OH OH
NOW WE'RE BACK IN THE FIGHT
    WE'RE BACK ON THE TRAIN
OH, Back On The Chain Gang
A CIRCUMSTANCE BEYOND OUR CONTROL, OH OH OH OH
THE PHONE, THE TV AND THE NEWS OF THE WORLD
GOT IN THE HOUSE LIKE A PIGEON FROM HELL, OH OH OH OH
THREW SAND IN OUR EYES AND DESCENDED LIKE FLIES
PUT US BACK ON THE TRAIN
OH, BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG
    THE POWERS THAT BE
THAT FORCE US TO LIVE LIKE WE DO
    BRING ME TO MY KNEES
WHEN I SEE WHAT THEY'VE DONE TO YOU
BUT I'LL DIE AS I STAND HERE TODAY
KNOWING THAT DEEP IN MY HEART
THEY'LL FALL TO RUIN ONE DAY
    FOR MAKING US PART
I FOUND A PICTURE OF YOU, OH OH OH OH
THOSE WERE THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF MY LIFE
LIKE A BREAK IN THE BATTLE WAS YOUR PART, OH OH OH OH
IN THE WRETCHED LIFE OF A LONELY HEART
NOW WE'RE BACK ON THE TRAIN
OH, BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG

  • This is a tribute to James Honeyman-Scott, the Pretenders guitarist who died of a drug overdose in 1982 at age 26. Scott's death was followed by bass player Pete Farndon's 10 months later. Farndon had been kicked out of the band because of his drug problems and died of an overdose.
  • The "picture of you" Chrissie Hynde sings about is a picture she found in her wallet of Ray Davies, leader of the band The Kinks. Hynde and Davies were a couple and had a daughter together. This song started off about him, but the meaning changed when Honeyman-Scott died.
  • This is a very emotional song. Chrissie Hynde sometimes tears up when performing it.
  • A Chain Gang is a group of convicts who are chained together while they do manual labor, usually outside.
  • This was the first Pretenders single featuring Billy Bremner and Tony Butler, who replaced Farndon and Honeyman-Scott.
  • This was released as a single almost 2 years before the album came out.

  • This is a personal song for vocalist Mikey Chapman. It finds him recounting a story about a person he moved away from, but despite the sadness he is grateful for the times together. He told Kerrang!: "To me, this is a message to the person you've moved away from. It's done, but they're still amazing. It's sad but uplifting."
