Crazy Little Thing Called Love Song Chart

Freddie Mercury wrote this while Queen were recording The Game in Germany. He wrote it while taking a bubble bath in his room at the Munich Hilton. Peter Hince, the head of Queen's road crew, recalled to Mojo magazine September 2009: "The idea for the song came to him while he was in the bath. He emerged, wrapped in a towel, I handed him the guitar and he worked out the chords there and then. Fred had this knack of knowing a great pop song."

Freddie acknowledged that perhaps his limited talent on the guitar helped shape the song: "'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' took me five or ten minutes. I did that on the guitar, which I can't play for nuts, and in one way it was quite a good thing because I was restricted, knowing only a few chords. It's a good discipline because I simply had to write within a small framework. I couldn't work through too many chords and because of that restriction I wrote a good song, I think."

This sounded a lot more like Elvis Presley than Queen. It was a different sound for the group, but their fans loved it.

This was the first song on which Freddie Mercury played rhythm guitar. He was keen to keep the song minimal, despite his limited guitar knowledge, and producer Mack claimed that he rushed into the studio to record it "before Brian could get there!"

He also played the guitar solo on the original recording, but the tapes were lost so Brian May played the solo instead, using a Fender Telecaster to achieve the period sound. May didn't seem to like playing another guitar, and even when playing live, after performing the solo on the Telecaster he would immediately switch back to his Red Special.

At first, this was not released in the US. Since the album was not out yet, radio stations there started playing import copies of the single. This led Queen's record company to release it in America, about 3 months after it came out in England.

Mercury's name is in the lyrics. He sings, "Are you ready," and the band sings, "Ready Freddie."

This section took on a poignant edge after Mercury's death when the song was performed with guest singers, as the lyric was never altered regardless of the vocalist. Fans would take this opportunity to bellow the 'Ready, Freddie!' lyric back at the band in remembrance of the singer.

On stage, this was an important part of the show. Brian May often used three different guitars during the song: the first verse was played by Freddie alone with his guitar, then Brian joined with another Ovation Acoustic; before the third verse he had already switched to a Telecaster on which he performed the solo. During the singalong part (famous for its "ready Freddie" line) Brian again changed instruments to his homemade Red Special. From 1984 onwards Mercury replaced the acoustic with another Telecaster.

The single was very successful for the band, hitting #2 in the UK and becoming their first US #1 hit, There's an unconfirmed legend (commented on by Roger Taylor on the radio show In The Studio, and by Brian May on his website) that declares John Lennon was inspired by this song to go back to the music business. Whether it's true or false is still unknown, but it is a fact that Lennon listened to Queen and he did try new influences on his Double Fantasy album. (thanks, Sebas - Tokyo, Japan, for above 2)

Song For Someone Song Chart

Bono most likely had in mind his teenage sweetheart-turned-long-standing wife Ali Hewson when he penned this tender song of awkward first love. The pair started dating in 1976, right around the time U2 was formed.

Speaking to Dave Fanning during a RTE two hour Songs of Innocence special, Bono explained the album is "all about first journeys." He added that this song "is about the awkwardness of falling in love and sex."

The song is one of four tracks on Songs of Innocence that was co-produced by OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, best known for working with pop artists lile Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson and Beyoncé. OneRepublic opened for U2 on their 360 Tour dates during the summer of 2010.

Asked by Q magazine why the band recruited Tedder, Bono explained that he was brought in for his gift for melody. The U2 frontman said: "The popsters are beating the others on melody. Not in lyrics, not in their aesthetic, but they're writing better tunes. That was not the case with The Beatles and the Stones. The Beatles were writing better tunes than the popsters and not compromising on their lyrics and their aesthetic."

"When Brian Burton [Danger Mouse] ran out of time to work with us – and he's by far the biggest presence on the album as a producer – we got to work with Paul Epworth, we got to work with Ryan Tedder," he added. "Their only interest is in melody that you haven't heard before and the uniqueness of it. So that changed the game for us."

The nine-minute short film for this song stars actor Woody Harrelson portraying a man being released from prison. The visual was directed by Vincent Haycock who has previously shot shorts for Paul McCartney ("Early Days") and Lana Del Rey ("West Coast") and also stars Harrelson's daughter Zoe Harrelson.

The clip is thematically linked to the Sundance TV series Rectify, which follows the story of Daniel Holden after his release from 19 years on death row.

A second Matt Mahurin-directed moody black-and-white clip video was released. The video features a performance from Bono filmed earlier in 2015 in Malibu interspersed with imagery of barren desert and night skies. The director and the U2 frontman previously worked together on 1993's "Love Is Blindness" and Mahurin has also worked with many other high profile artists over the years including Metallica, R.E.M., and Alice In Chains.

Bicycle Race Song Chart

Freddie Mercury wrote this in France after watching the Tour de France bicycle race ride by his hotel. The band were recording Jazz in the French countryside mainly as a tax break - Roger Taylor claimed in the Days of our Lives documentary that they were being taxed as much as 98% on royalties on previous albums, hence why they defected to France and later Montreux in Switzerland to record future albums.

This was released as a double A-side single with "Fat Bottomed Girls." They ran back to back on the album, and many radio stations played them together. The "Fat Bottomed Girls" are mentioned in this song's lyrics.

Wherever Queen played, bicycle shops sold out of bells bought by fans who brought them to the show to ring them during this song.

Queen staged a bicycle race around Wimbledon stadium in England to promote the single. 65 professional models were hired to race nude, with special effects hiding the nudity in the original video; a photo from the race was used on the cover of the single and images from the race were used for the video.

Queen rented 65 bicycles for the race. When the company found out what they were used for, they refused to take the bikes back unless the band paid for new seats.

The album contained a poster of the women in the bicycle race. It was left out of some copies for stores that did not want to carry it, but fans could mail order the poster if they desired. A bikini bottom was digitally added to the cover of the single, and on some US releases a bra was also added.

At a 1978 concert in Madison Square Garden, Queen re-created the video by having women with very little clothing ride bicycles around the stage.

Queen had a lot of success the year before with another double A-side, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions."

The song features surprisingly complex instrumentation, and the Jazz album as a whole perhaps represents the apex of Queen's experimentation. Foolish Father Song Chart

This song finds Rivers Cuomo asking someone to forgive the poor parenting skills of their dad. He told NME the lyrics, "could be me singing about my father or me singing about my daughter."

Rivers' father, Frank Cuomo, walked out on his family in the mid-'70s, when the Weezer frontman was about four. Rivers saw Frank infrequently after that and he sung about his absent dad on Weezer's 1994 hit "Say It Ain't So." They renewed their relationship around the time "Say It Ain't So" was released and Frank has become a big presence in his son's life in recent years. "Now I see him all the time," Rivers told Rolling Stone. "Now that I'm a father, I've forgiven my parents."

Tie Your Mother Down Song Chart

Queen guitarist Brian May wrote this song. In a 1976 interview on Capital Radio, Freddie Mercury was asked "why tie your mother down?" The Queen frontman replied: "Well this one in fact is a track written by Brian (May) actually, I dunno why. Maybe he was in one of his vicious moods. I think he's trying to out do me after 'Death On Two Legs' actually."

The video, which is comprised of concert footage of the band, was shot in Nassau Coliseum in Long Island during Queen's 1977 US tour. Queen discovered the power of music videos two years earlier when TV shows started playing the video they made for "Bohemian Rhapsody."

Brian May clearly has a lot of affection for this song - it was included in the setlist of almost all Queen shows, as well as his solo tours in the 1990s, the reunited Queen + (Paul Rogers and Adam Lambert) tours, and even on his various performances with Kerry Ellis. On the Acoustic by Candlelight tour with Ellis, he performed a slowed-down, Country-style version of the song to better fit the acoustic performance.

If Brian May and occasionally Roger Taylor guest with other bands, this is commonly the song May will play with the band - they have performed it numerous times with the Foo Fighters and The Darkness.

Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen performed this when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins from The Foo Fighters played with them.

After Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1991, a concert was held in his honor in Wembley Stadium in London. At the show, Joe Elliott from Def Leppard sang this with Slash from Guns N' Roses on guitar. The concert drew 72,000 fans and raised money to fight AIDS.

Queen commonly used explosions for effect during live and video performances of this song. During the video shoot, Roger Taylor was blown off his stool and off the stage due to an explosion placed in a bucket on his riser. While watching certain versions of the video you can see the part cut out, where Freddie turns around to face the back of the stage almost immediately. The recording had to be stopped for a moment because Roger was on the floor. Luckily, he was fine, though Brian May states clearly in video commentary, "Nearly killed Roger, it has to be said!" On the TV show Al Murray's Happy Hour, on each episode a band would appear and have to cover a Queen song in the outro of the show. You+Me is a country and folk-flavored duo. The act comprises Alecia Moore, better known as Pink and Dallas Green, who after fronting the Canadian hardcore band Alexisonfire, has released a series solo albums under the City and Colour moniker. The pair met through Pink's husband Carey Hart and instantly felt a connection. "He has the most angelic voice I've ever heard in my life," Pink said of Green. "And I thought, 'Huh, maybe one day if I get good enough he'd sing with me."

City and Colour opened for Pink on several dates of her Truth About Love tour. Once they got into the studio together, the pair recorded an entire album in about a week. This eponymous love ode was released as their debut single.

This uses the guitar riff from the 1972 America song "Ventura Highway." Jackson wrote it with her producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Lifting a soft-rock hit from the '70s doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for a Dance-Pop act like Jackson, but Jimmy Jam told us that Janet loves many kinds of music and was always willing to try different ideas. Describing the construction of this song, he said, "For 'Someone to Call My Lover,' she hadn't heard the 'Ventura Highway' sample before. She hadn't heard those songs. So it's kind of fun to come up with stuff like that and play it for her. And she hasn't heard of it, but she still really likes it. So you have something that's going to appeal to people that haven't heard it before, it's going to catch them, but it's also going to catch the people who are nostalgic about it." This song was used in the animated series Neighbors From Hell on the episode "Country Club Hell" in 2010.

Jackson really was looking for someone to call her lover: she had just ended her ten-year marriage to Rene Elizondo Jr. while recording this album.

The loop played throughout the chorus was borrowed from the Classical piece "Gymnopédie No. 1" by French composer Erik Satie. Jackson first heard it on a TV commercial when she was a child and never forgot it.

Jackson first worked with So So Def producer Jermaine Dupri, who would become her longtime boyfriend, on a remix of this song. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2002, but lost to Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like A Bird."

Change The World Song Chart

This was written by the songwriting team of Tommy Sims, Gordon Kennedy and Wayne Kirkpatrick. The song was originally recorded by Wynonna Judd early in 1996, and then it became a big hit when Eric Clapton heard the song and recorded it as a duet with the R&B singer Babyface later that year.

Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin uses this as an example of a song that can succeed without a great title or lyric. He told Musician magazine: "What sold that song, I believe, is production. And it had a good melody. But don't listen to the lyric. Because the lyric is appalling. It's a bad lyric. There are some rhymes in there that are really awful. But that's not what sold the song."

This was featured in the John Travolta movie Phenomenon.

The Clapton/Babyface combination brought together a rock legend and an R&B kingpin, and the combination gave the song huge crossover appeal. The duo got together again when Babyface played on Clapton's album Pilgrim in 1998.

Gordon Kennedy told the story of this song in an interview with American Songwriter magazine: "'Change The World' was a song written over the course of a year by Tommy Sims, Wayne Kirkpatrick, and myself. On a recording session in Quad Studios in Nashville, in the early '90s, Wayne and I were recording some demos in an attempt to do the 'artist' thing. We recorded four songs that day, three of which wound up on Garth (Brooks)'s Chris Gaines CD (this would happen several years later).
During that session, Tommy was there playing bass and played us the nugget of an idea he had, wondering if it might be something that would work for the sound we were doing. He had the title and a chord progression and melody direction going. Wayne would ask him some months later for a tape of the idea so he could work on it. He wrote the lyrics to the chorus and all but one line of the second verse. Then, it went dormant again for a time before I asked Wayne about its progress. He gave me what he'd done on it. I finished writing the music, went to Columbus, Ohio and laid down a demo track with Tommy. He was there working on a church choir album. On the way home, I listened to a tape of the track and dictated lyrics into another little handheld recorder (I still have the micro-cassette!) I wrote the lyrics to the first verse and the missing line in the second verse. When I got home, I went into the studio and did a guitar and all of the vocals for a finished demo, the one Clapton heard later… None of the three of us were together when we wrote what we each wrote on the song."

The song was a massive AOR hit but Clapton was happy to take a walk in the commercial market as the guitarist made sure that he still kept one foot tapping on his blues roots. Clapton explained to Mojo magazine May 2013: "When I heard Tommy Sims' demo. I could hear McCartney doing that, so I needed to, with greatest respect to Paul, take that and put it somewhere black. So I asked Babyface who, even though he may not be aware of it, gave it the blues thing. The first two lines I play on that song on the acoustic guitar are lines I quote wherever I can and they come from the beginning of 'Mannish Boy' by Muddy Waters. On every record I make where I think. This has got a chance of doing well, I make sure I pay my dues on this. So I think I've found a way to do it, but it has to have one foot in the blues, even if its subtly disguised."

Angaleena's former Kentucky coal miner father, Jimmy Presley, opens the title song of her debut solo album with a personal narrative. Many of the tracks on American Middle Class revolve around the struggles of people working to make ends meet. "You keep doing it. You be proud of it," she told Country Weekly. "I feel like it's a necessary evil. You recognize yourself as one of the heroes of the country."

The song features one of Presley's biggest musical heroes, Patty Loveless, whom she met through her fellow Pistol Annies member Miranda Lambert. "They had toured together in Switzerland. She had came out to a Pistol Annies show in Atlanta, and we clicked instantly - like we were kindred spirits," Presley explained to Billboard magazine. "I was at her house one weekend, cooking and singing, and I played her the rough of the record. She gravitated toward 'American Middle Class.' She said it was kind of a modern-day 'Coal Miner's Daughter.' I asked her to sing on it, and she did."

Presley explained the song's meaning to Billboard: "It's my story of how I grew up - right at poverty's door," she said. "We were going to fake it till we make it. My mom would cut the little Keds signs and hot-glue them to dollar store shoes so her daughter had Keds and she could hold her head up and be proud until you have something to be proud of. It works."

"I'm so proud my parents had that work ethic," Presley continued. "They pushed me. They made me go to college, and then I got my degree and said, 'Here, Mom. I'm going to Nashville.' But I have all these stories to write about, and I definitely wouldn't have as many to write about if they hadn't forced me to grow up before I came here.''

Tulsa Time Song Chart

This song was originally recorded by the Texas songwriter Don Williams; it was written by his guitarist Danny Flowers. The song is about a guy who leaves Oklahoma for the bright lights of Hollywood, but discovers that he is much happier back home where he can set his watch to "Tulsa Time," where things happen at a much slower pace.

The original version of this song was released earlier in 1978 on Don Williams' album Expressions. Clapton was into American roots music and had recorded Williams' song "We're All the Way" on his 1977 album Slowhand. When it came time to record Backless, he included this song and released it as a single, backed with "Cocaine," a song written by the Tulsa musician J.J. Cale.

The original 1978 single didn't chart, but a live version taken from a show at the Budokhan Temple in Japan was issued in 1980 and made #30 US.

When he recorded this, four members of Clapton's band were from Oklahoma: bassist Carl Radle, drummer Jamie Oldaker, organist Dick Simms and backup singer Marcy Levy. Radle, Oldaker and Simms were all from Tulsa and had a band together called the Tulsa County Band, which helped forge the "Tulsa Sound," a melding of country and rock. Clapton was smitten with this sound, and used these musicians to create it on his Slowhand and Backless albums. On his next album, Just One Night, Clapton switched to British musicians.

For a while, Clapton opened his shows with this song, including the Budokhan show the single was taken from.
