A Town Called Paradise Lyrics

When your sanity is a hurricane
And your heartache is tidal wave
Oh you can pull me under
Oh you can pull me under

When euphoria is hit and run
And you are drowning in a heatless sun
Oh you can pull me under
Oh you can pull me under

So let's wash away the night
Into a neon scene of light
Away we'll drive into A Town Called Paradise

Into a town called paradise

When you are buried in the world eclipse
And there's nobody to help you left
Oh you can pull me under
Oh you can pull me under

When you are running out of dreams to catch
And every morning is an hourglass
Oh you can pull me under
Oh you can pull me under

So let's wash away the night
Into a neon scene of light
Away we'll drive into a town called paradise

Into a town called paradise

When your sanity is a hurricane
When your sanity is a hurricane
When your sanity is a hurricane
When your sanity is a hurricane
It's a hurricane

Oh you can pull me under
Pull me under
So let's wash away the night
Into a town called paradise
Into a town called paradise
Into a town called paradise

A Town Called Paradise
  • The title track of Tiesto's fifth album, the song features vocals by Zac Barnett, who is the lead singer of American Authors ("Best Day of My Life").
  • Tiesto explained to Rolling Stone why he named the album after this song. "When I really look at it, it's like this oasis of entertainment right in the middle of the desert, so to me, 'A Town Called Paradise' is a good way to describe Las Vegas," he said. "It's been a very special place to me and has influenced the creation of this album."

    The Christmas Song Lyrics

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack frost nipping at your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight

They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although its been said many times, many ways
    Merry Christmas to you

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although its been said many times, many ways
    Merry Christmas to you

    The Christmas Song
  • Mel Torme and Bob Wells were songwriting partners, and used to take turns going over to each others homes to write songs. One particularly hot July day, Mel drove over to Bob's house in Teluca Lake, California, and when he got there he walked into the house, couldn't find Bob, but found a spiral note pad of paper with some words on it - "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, Yuletide Carols being sung by a choir, folks dressed up like Eskimos." When Mel found Bob, he asked him "What's this?", and Bob said "it's so blistering hot here, and thought it would be fun to see if I could write something about a totally different season, the winter season, Christmas season, and see if I could mentally, virtually cool off." Mel said "not only have you also cooled me off, but I think you've got a song here!" And the duo wrote the rest of the song in about 35 minutes.
  • Nat King Cole recorded this for the first time in 1946 with his group The Nat King Cole Trio. They were the big act on Columbia Records, who had them re-record the song with a string section - the first time the trio used strings on a record. The no-strings version was shelved (later released in 1989 on a Rhino compilation called Billboard Greatest Christmas Hits 1935-1954), and the strings version issued - it made #3 in the US and hung around the charts even after Christmas. Cole recorded it again in 1953 with Nelson Riddle, who was an ace arranger at Capitol famous for his sessions with Frank Sinatra. Capitol Records released it again in December of 1960 as part of Cole's Christmas album The Magic of Christmas. Cole recorded another version (this time in stereo) in 1961, and this one was issued as a single in 1962, making #65 in the US. In the UK, the song was released several times, reaching its peak chart position of #69 in 1991.

The song became more popular than ever in the '00s, as radio stations in a variety of formats added it to their holiday playlists every year. In 2006, ASCAP announced that it was the most-played holiday song of the previous five years, and while many artists had recorded it, Cole's version was still by far the most popular. In 2011, ASCAP announced that the song was the third most played holiday song that year, behind "Sleigh Ride" and "Winter Wonderland."
  • This was featured on the soundtrack of the 2002 movie Catch Me If You Can, which was directed by Steven Spielberg. In the film, the characters played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks end up speaking with each other every Christmas Eve.
  • Justin Bieber recorded a new version of this festive tune as a duet with Usher for his Under The Mistletoe album. It was premiered on Ryan Seacrest's radio show on October 24, 2011. "Justin and I did the classic record 'Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.' This record is going to be remembered for years to come," Usher told Seacrest. "It's a record that has always been one of my favorites, and I'm happy that I was able to share it with Justin, and for us to put it out."
  • Bieber's cover peaked at #58, marking the third time the festive song entered the Hot 100. The re-release of Nat King Cole's rendition reached #65 the week of December 29, 1962, and Christina Aguilera's dance remix peaked at #18 on January 1, 2000.

    Tonight (We Live Forever) Lyrics

Feels like a party every time you come around
Even though it's just the two of us in my house
I don't know what you do, but you're making everything feel right
I may not know much, but this feels like love
Ooh ooh ooh ooh oh oh oh
I knew when I met I was onto something good
You made me love you like I thought I never could
I have the best time, every time you're by my side
    'Cause we're living for tonight

    Tonight we'll live forever
    Do this we won't remember
But it's all good, all good
If we can, we should (we should)
    As long as we're together
It's all good! Ooh oh oh
It's all good! Ooh oh oh
It's all good! Ooh oh oh

You'll take a bad day and you'll make it feel alright
It might be dark outside, but you'll make my sun shine
I don't know what you do, but you're making everything feel right
    'Cause this feels like love

    Tonight we'll live forever
    Do this we won't remember
But it's all good, all good
If we can, we should (we should)
    As long as we're together,
It's all good! Ooh oh oh
It's all good! Ooh oh oh
It's all good! Ooh oh oh

    As long as we're together
    We're gonna live forever,
    Gonna do whatever!
If we stick together, it will be all good
And if we stick together we can live forever
    We can do whatever
    It will be all good

    Tonight we'll live forever
    Do this we won't remember
But it's all good, it's all good
If we can, we should (we should)

  • This is based on a comedy routine by Bill Hicks, who hated the city of Los Angeles. He thought the people were very superficial and represented America at its worst. In his routine, which is sampled in the song, Hicks talks about California falling into the ocean and creating Arizona Bay. Hicks died of cancer in 1994.
  • Lead singer Maynard Keenan was a big fan of Hicks, and drew inspiration from his comedy routines, which often contained lots of social commentary. The album artwork contains a painting of Hicks dressed like a doctor with the caption, "Another Dead Hero."
  • Maynard spend 6 months writing the lyrics. Though he does mention LA, he's not speaking specifically about the city. It's a conceptual song asking, "What if everything was destroyed and we had to start over again." LA in this case represents what's wrong with the world in Maynard's eyes, and he's trying to get the message across that we need something like the city falling into the ocean to happen before we can evolve as a race. (thanks, colin - chatham, Canada)
  • This song was inspired when Tool performed in some sort of L Ron Hubbard arena in Los Angeles. The band looked in dismay when they came across all these yuppie disciples of Hubbard and saw what they felt were the meaningless things they stood for.
  • "AEnema" is a combination of words. "Anima" is the female archetype hypothesized by philosopher/psychologist Carl Jung to exist within the male. "Enema" is the purification of one's rectum through flushing water. The combination would mean something along the lines of flushing out the superficial crap within us.
  • In the song, Maynard gives a list of people he can pretty much do without. The song is a reminder about what is important and what is not in the long run of life. The song has an intense anger focused logically on ideas of superficial people, yet has an inescapable creativity to it. (thanks, mike - oakhurst, NJ, for above 3)

    Amateur Hour Lyrics

Lawns grow plush in the hinter lands
Its the perfect little setting for the one night stands
The drapes are drawn and the lights are low
Its the time to put in practice what you've dreamed about

But she can show you what you must do to be more like people better than you.

Amateur Hour goes on and on
When you turn pro, you know,
    She lets you know
Amateur Hour goes on and on
When you turn pro, you know,
    She tells you so

Girls grow tops to go topless in
While we sit and count the hairs
    That blossom from our chin
Our voices change at a rapid pace
I could start a song at tenor and then end at bass

    So choose your partners everyone
If you hesitate, the good ones are gone

Amateur Hour goes on and on
When you turn pro, you know,
    She lets you know
Amateur Hour goes on and on
When you turn pro, you know,
    She tells you so

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh oooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh oooh ooh ooh

And Amateur Hour goes on and on,
When you turn pro you know,
    She lets you know

Dance, laugh, wine, dine, talk and sing
But those cannot replace what is the real thing
It's a lot like playing the violin
You cannot start off to be Yehudi Menuhin

So Amateur Hour goes on and on
When you turn pro, you know,
    She lets you know
Amateur Hour goes on and on
When you turn pro, you know,
    She tells you so

    Amateur Hour
  • "Amateur Hour" is a coquettish tale about inexperienced young men visiting women in the "hinterlands" in order to learn more about sex ("She can show you what you must do to be more like people better than you"). It was the second single to be released from Sparks' album Kimono My House after "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us ."

Like its predecessor, "Amateur Hour" was a Top 10 hit, peaking at #7 on the UK charts in 1974. Sparks' lead vocalist, Russell Mael, said of the song's success: "Singles have a lifespan of about four minutes in England. Thus, while 'This Town' was losing steam, 'Amateur Hour' was released as the follow-up. It was satisfying that a song that was so different in nature from our initial success with 'This Town' could also be successful with the British and European public."
  • In our interview with Martin Gordon, who played bass for Sparks during the Kimono My House era, he revealed he was unhappy with the recording of this song. This was due to him being forced to perform on a Fender bass guitar instead of his signature Rickenbacker 4001 - described by the rest of Sparks as "really wimpy" - and through a DI ("Digital Input") instead of an amp: "When I was asked, during live rehearsals for an upcoming UK tour, to replace the 4001 with a Fender Precision, I failed to see the logic, and refused to comply. I had already compromised my sound once, on the recording of the tune 'Amateur Hour,' where I, reluctantly, replaced the previously-recorded 4001 bass line with an anonymous Fender. Which, to make matters worse, wasn't even run through an amp but was DI'd. Plonk, plonk, it went."
  • In 1997, Sparks recorded an electronic version of this song featuring Synth Pop duo, Erasure, for their retrospective album, Plagiarism.
  • Kimono My House was Sparks' third album. It was released in 1974 and is widely considered to be the sibling duo's commercial breakthrough. The title is a pun on the Rosemary Clooney song, "Come On-A My House."

Sometimes, I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I can't help but ask myself how much I'll let the fear
    Take the wheel and steer

    It's Driven me before
And it seems to have a vague, haunting mass appeal
But lately I am beginning to find
That I should be the one behind the wheel

    Whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there with open arms and open eyes

    Whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there with open arms and open eyes

So if I decide to waiver my chance
To be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine
And hold my own and drive?

    It's driven me before
And it seems to be the way that everyone else gets around
But lately I am beginning to find
That when I drive myself my light is found

    So whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there with open arms and open eyes, yeh

    Whatever tomorrow brings
I'll be there with open arms and open eyes

Would you kill the Queen to crush the hive?
Would you choose water over wine
    Hold the wheel and drive?

    You really are a heel
You're as cuddly as a cactus
You're as charming as an eel
    Mr. Grinch!
    You're a bad banana
    With a greasy black peel!

    You're a monster, Mr. Grinch!
    Your heart's an empty hole
Your brain is full of spiders
You've got garlic in your soul
    Mr. Grinch!
    I wouldn't touch you
    With a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!

You're a vile one, Mr. Grinch!
You have termites in your smile
You have all the tender sweetness
    Of a seasick crocodile
    Mr. Grinch!
Given the choice between the two of you
    I'd take the seasick crocodile!

You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch!
    You're a nasty, wasty skunk!
Your heart is full of unwashed socks
Your soul is full of gunk
    Mr. Grinch!
The three words that best describe you
Are as follows, and I quote
    "Stink, stank, stunk!"

    You're a rotter, Mr. Grinch!
You're the king of sinful sots!
    Your heart's a dead tomato
    Splotched with moldy, purple spots
    Mr. Grinch!
Your soul is an apalling dump-heap
    Overflowing with the most disgraceful
    Assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable
    Mangled-up in tangled-up knots!

    You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch!
    With a nauseous super naus!
    You're a crooked jerky jockey
And you drive a crooked hoss

You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch
  • This was written and recorded for the classic 1966 Dr. Seuss TV Holiday Special How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Seuss wrote the lyrics and Albert Hague wrote the music. The song appears three times in the special, starting when The Grinch begins crafting his impostor Santa suit. Each time it plays, we hear more about the despicable green guy, who eventually grows a heart. The version played on radio is a combination of the three show uses.

If you had not have fallen
Then I would not have found you
Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground
And I patched up your broken wing and hung around a while
Trying to keep your spirits up and your fever down

I knew someday that you would fly away
For love's the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to, I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground

Fly on, fly on past, the speed of sound
I'd rather see you up than see you down
So leave me if you need to, I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground.

So leave me if you need to, I will still remember

Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground
  • Nelson wrote and performed this song for his starring role as a Country singer in the movie Honeysuckle Rose (1981).
  • The origins of this song are a little murky. Some fans assume the title angel refers to the Hells Angels biker Charlie Magoo, a friend of Nelson's who was killed, though the singer won't confirm or deny it. He has hinted that it's about his former wife Connie Koepke. (thanks, Kyle - Sparta, NJ)
  • During live performances, Nelson sometimes dedicates this song to his son Billy, the third child from his first marriage to Martha Matthews, who committed suicide in 1991.
  • This was Nelson's seventh chart-topping solo hit on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
  • Bob Dylan covered this song while recording his 1983 album Infidels.
  • Nelson recorded a live version of this song with Patty Griffin for his 2005 album Songs for Tsunami Relief: Austin to South Asia to aid the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.

    We've Only Just Begun Lyrics

We've Only Just Begun to live
    White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way
    (We've only begun)

Before the risin' sun, we fly
    So many roads to choose
We'll start out walkin' and learn to run
    And yes, we've just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talkin' it over, just the two of us
    Workin' together day to day
    Together
And when the evening comes, we smile
    So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
    And yes, we've just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talkin' it over, just the two of us
    Workin' together day to day
    Together
    Together

And when the evening comes, we smile
    So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
    And yes, we've just begun

    We've Only Just Begun
  • This started out as a bank commercial. Songwriters Paul Williams and Roger Nichols were commissioned by an advertising agency to write it in 1968 for Crocker Bank, which was trying to attract young people and newlyweds to their institution. (thanks, Brian - Funchal Madeira, Portugal)
  • Paul Williams told us: "'It had all the romantic beginnings of a bank commercial' is the way I describe it. There was actually a wonderful writer named Tony Asher who wrote for this ad agency, and he'd had a skiing accident and he broke his arm, so he couldn't write or play the piano or whatever. So he suggested Roger Nichols and I as replacements to write this ad. The ad agency called us and said, "Look, we're going to show a young couple getting married, driving off into the sunset, and it's going to say, 'You've got a long way to go, we'd like to help you get there to the Crocker Bank.'" And I went, Okay, what rhymes with Crocker? Crocker what? And they said very specifically, "No we don't want a jingle." What they asked for is what we would today call a music video. It was going to show a young couple getting married, driving off into the sunset. After the ceremony, the first kiss and all. So Roger and I wrote the song that would play over that.

We wrote the first two verses of 'We've Only Just Begun.' We wrote a second version of the commercial that was a verse, and what became the bridge. We added a third verse just in case anybody would ever want to record it. And then I assumed that it would never, ever get cut again. Richard (Carpenter), I guess, heard me singing it on the TV commercial, and called and asked if there was a complete song. And we went, 'Well, funny you should ask.' And if there hadn't been a complete song, we would have lied and said, 'Well, of course there is,' and then sat down and written it. You know, songwriting in those days was like that, too. I remember finishing songs in the back seat of a publisher's car on the way to play it for a producer. I retained my rights as a writer, and the publisher retained his rights as well."
  • Williams went on to write several more hits for the Carpenters, as well as songs for Barbra Streisand, Carole King and Three Dog Night. He also worked on many films as both a songwriter and an actor, composing the classics "Evergreen" from A Star Is Born and "Rainbow Connection" for The Muppet Movie. He attributes his songwriting success to authenticity, explaining: "When 'We've Only Just Begun' was a #1 record, I think the #1 album in the country was "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." So it was as far away from what was happening in the music scene as you can get. And yet it was a hit. I think it was a hit because of, obviously, Karen [Carpenter]'s amazing vocal, but I think that any time we write authentically and honestly about what's going on in the center of our chest, because people are so much alike, there's a big a chance that it's going on in the center of your chest, too." (Check out our interview with Paul Williams.)
  • This song is very popular at weddings, as the lyrics describe a couple starting a new life together and living in harmony: "Talking it over, just the two of us, working together day by day." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Grandma Got Run Over Lyrics

Grandma Got Run Over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and grandpa we believe
She'd been drinking too much eggnog,
And we begged her not to go
    But she forgot her medication
and she staggered out the door into the snow
When we found her Christmas morning,
At the scene of the attack,
She had hoof-prints on her forehead,
And incriminating Claus marks on her back

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and grandpa we believe

Now we're all so proud of grandpa,
He's been taking this so well
See him in there watching football,
Drinking beer and playing cards with cousin Mel
    It's not Christmas without Grandma
All the family's dressed in black
And we just can't help but wonder
Should we open up her gifts,
Or send them back (send them back)

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and grandpa we believe

Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of fig
And the blue and silver candles
That would just have matched the hair on grandma's wig
I've warned all my friends and neighbors
    Better watch out for yourselves,
They should never give a license
To a man who drives a sleigh
    And plays with elves

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and grandpa we believe

    Singin' grandpa
Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and grandpa we believe
    Merry Christmas

    Grandma Got Run Over
  • This was recorded by the then husband-and-wife duo of Elmo Shropshire and Patsy Trigg, although Patsy does not sing or play an instrument on this song. It was released in 1979 in the San Francisco area where they lived, and each year more and more radio stations picked up on this holiday novelty classic, and by 1984 the song hit the national chart. Unfortunately, a year later Elmo and Patsy divorced. (thanks, Jeff - Boston, MA)
  • This was made into a TV special of the same name in 2000. After Grandma disappears on Christmas Eve, it's up to her grandson to find out what happened to her, prove Santa is real, and keep an evil family member from claiming her stuff. We won't tell you how it ends, but you'll be happy to know that it is available on DVD.
  • This was written by Randy Brooks, author of several other catchy novelty songs including "I'd Rather Be Sailin' with Governor Palin" and "It's Halloween (A Christmas Song)." Brooks played this while sitting in with Elmo and Patsy at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe in December 1978. After the show they asked him for a taped copy. Elmo and Patsy recorded their own version a year later and began selling it at their shows. A friend brought it to the attention of Gene Nelson of KSFO San Francisco. (thanks, Ekristheh - Halath, United States)
  • Dr. Elmo (a veterinarian) does more radio and TV interviews each holiday season than just about anyone - in 2005 he was on 11 TV shows in major markets, and did 150 radio interviews, most of which were syndicated to reach 3500 markets. Each morning during the holiday season, he starts his interviews at 4:30 - 5:00 AM (West Coast) and does an interview every 15 minutes until about 11:00 AM. Then he gets ready for his TV appearances, concert or personal appearances.
  • In 2005, this song sold on 200,000 CDs in retail stores, was downloaded over 100,000 times as a ringtone, and sold 40,000 downloads through Sony and 6,000 on iTunes.
  • There have been millions of plush reindeer toys sold at major retailers that sing Elmo's version of this song. It's the #1 plush toy sold during the holidays.
  • There was a "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" animation that played on the WB channel each year, several times, in prime time. Elmo wrote the 5 songs that are in this animation. He also narrates it and plays the part of Grandpa.
  • Elmo, who turned 70 in 2006, ran his first marathon (New York) in 2005. (thanks, Kathy - San Francisco, CA)
  • A group of high school students from South Mississippi recorded "Downtown Got Run Over By Katrina," which is a parody of the after-shocks that Gulf Coast residents felt following Hurricane Katrina in late 2005. The song created quite an interest during Christmas shopping season on the Mississippi/Louisiana Coast. Elmo gave them permission to use his tune. (thanks, Robby - Pascagoula, MS)

    Donde Esta Santa Claus Lyrics

    Mamacita, Donde Esta Santa Claus?
    Donde esta Santa Claus?
And the toys that he will leave.
Mamacita, oh, where is Santa Claus?
I look for him because it's a Christmas Eve.

I know that I should be sleeping,
But maybe he's not far away,
Out of the window I'm peeping,
Hoping to see him in his sleigh.

I hope he won't forget to clack his castinet,
    And to his reindeer, say,
"Oh Pancho, Oh! Vixen, Oh! Pedro, Oh! Blitzen,"
Ole! Ole! Ole! cha cha cha.

    Mamacita, donde esta Santa Claus?
    Oh! Where is Santa Claus?
    It's Christmas Eve.

    Mamacita, donde esta Santa Claus?
I look for him because it's Christmas Eve.

I know that I should be sleeping,
But maybe he's not far away,
Out of the window I'm peeping,
Hoping to see him in sleigh.

I hope he won't forget to crack his castinet,
    And to his reindeer, say,
"Oh Pancho, Oh! Vixen, Oh! Pedro, Oh! Blitzen,"
Ole! Ole! Ole! cha cha cha.

    Mamacita, donde esta Santa Claus?
    Oh! Where is Santa Claus?
    It's Christmas Eve.

    It's Christmas Eve.
    It's Christmas Eve.
    It's Christmas Eve.
Alright, Mamacita. I'll go to sleep now.
    It's Christmas Eve...
