Thinking Out Loud Lyrics

When your legs don't work like they used to before
And I can't sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks

And darling I will be loving you 'til we're 70
And baby my heart could still fall as hard at 23
And I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe just the touch of a hand
Oh me I fall in love with you every single day
And I just wanna tell you I am

So honey now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm Thinking Out Loud
Maybe we found love right where we are

When my hair's all but gone and my memory fades
And the crowds don't remember my name
When my hands don't play the strings the same way, mm
I know you will still love me the same

'Cause honey your soul can never grow old, it's evergreen
Baby your smile's forever in my mind and memory

I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe it's all part of a plan
I'll just keep on making the same mistakes
Hoping that you'll understand

But baby now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are, oh

(Ah la la, la la la, la la la, la la la la)

So baby now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Oh darling, place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are

Oh maybe we found love right where we are
And we found love right where we are

Thinking Out Loud
  • This soulful song finds Sheeran tipping the hat to his key teenage influence, Van Morrison. "No one's really channeled Van Morrison for a long time," he pointed out to Q magazine. "Everyone always channels, Michael Jackson and the Beatles and Bob Dylan, and I feel like Van Morrison is a key figure in the music that I make."
  • Sheeran wrote this love song about his girlfriend at the time, Athina Andrelos, who worked for English celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The pair split up in early 2015 after dating for about a year.
  • Ed Sheeran wrote this with the Bristol singer-songwriter Amy Wadge, whom he previously worked with on his 2010 EP, Songs I Wrote With Amy. Another of their collaborations, "Even My Dad Does Sometimes," can be found on the deluxe version of x.

Sheeran revealed to The Mirror that their song-writing session was held as a favor to his childhood friend to help her deal with financial issues. "[Amy] was going through financial troubles about a year ago," he said. "She drove to my house – my album was nearly done – and she asked if I could put a song from when I was 17 on the deluxe album, so she could get a little bit of money and pay the mortgage and bills and stuff."

"While she was there, we wrote 'Thinking Out Loud'," he added. "Now she never has to worry about money again."
  • The romantic ballad was the last song that Sheeran wrote for x. He penned it in his kitchen.
  • The song's music video was directed by Emil Nava, who also filmed the clip for "Sing." The visual features Sheeran and his partner Brittany Cherry ballroom dancing and was shot all at once in 16 mm film. "I wanted the video to be a little different, so I opted for ballroom dancing," he explained when the video was released in October 2014. "I had lessons for five hours a day when I was on my US tour last month."

Brittany Cherry was a contestant on Season 10 of the American TV dance competition So You Think You Can Dance. She is formally trained in ballroom, ballet, jazz, Latin and contemporary dance.
  • This topped the UK singles charts in its 19th week, after an exhilarating performance of the tune by Sheeran on the X Factor live show. In doing so the song broke the record for the slowest continual climb to #1, overtaking the 16-week ascent of Jennifer Rush's "The Power Of Love" and Celine Dion's "Think Twice."
  • The song broke the UK record for the most streams in a chart week when it was streamed 1.72 million streams in the week ending November 22, 2014.

The record was broken a month later by Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk," which achieved 2.34 million streams in the pre-Christmas week.
  • Ed Sheeran wanted to look good for the video, so he lost 35 pounds, mainly by giving up beer.
  • Sheeran performed this at the Grammy Awards in 2015 backed by John Mayer on guitar, Questlove on drums, and Herbie Hancock on keyboards (Sheeran later joined Electric Light Orchestra on "Mr. Blue Sky"). X was nominated for Album Of The Year, but lost to Morning Phase by Beck.
  • This spent eight weeks at #2 on the Hot 100 behind Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" without ever reaching the peak position. Missy Elliott's "Work It" and Foreigner's "Waiting For A Girl Like You" hold the joint record for the most weeks peaked at the runner-up spot: ten apiece.
  • With electronic music ruling the airwaves, this was one of the few hit songs of its time with a guitar solo (played by Chris Leonard), which is near the end of the song in place of a bridge. Running 4:41, it was also very long by 2014 hit song standards, although this extra time makes the song more appealing as a first dance wedding number.
  • The song made history by becoming the first to spend a full year inside the UK Top 40. Pharrell Williams' "Happy" was the previous record holder, having spent 49 consecutive weeks on the Top 40.
  • This picked up the award for Song of the Year at the Grammys in 2016. Stevie Wonder presented the award, opening the envelope and reading the card in braille before saying, "I told my daughter Iesha this was a great song when I first heard it, and it has won tonight."

When Sheeran collected the award with Amy Wadge, he said, "We wrote it on a couch in my house after having dinner. Quite odd." He also thanked his parents for flying to the ceremony each of the previous three years, only to see Ed come away empty-handed. When Sheeran turned the mic over to Wadge, however, producers didn't let her get a word in before rolling a Glenn Frey tribute.

The song also won for Best Solo Pop Performance, but lost Record of the Year to "Uptown Funk."

    Outside Lyrics

    [Verse: 1]
    It's hard to explain
Inherently it's just always been strange
    Neither here or there
Always somewhat out of place everywhere
    Ambiguous
Without a sense of belonging to touch
    Somewhere halfway
Feeling there's no one completely the same

    [Chorus:]
    Standing alone
    Eager to just
Believe it's good enough to be what
    You really are
    But in your heart
    Uncertainty forever lies
    And you'll always be
    Somewhere on the
    Outside

    [Verse: 2]
    Early on, you face
    The realization you don't
    have a space
    Where you fit in
    And recognize you
    Were born to exist

    [Chorus]
    Standing alone
    Eager to just
Believe it's good enough to be what
    You really are
    But in your heart
    Uncertainty forever lies
    And you'll always be
    Somewhere on the
    Outside

    And it's hard [Repeat: x2]

    [Bridge:]
    Irreversibly
    Falling in between
    And it's hard [Repeat: 1]
    To be understood
    As you are [Repeat: 1]

    Oh, and God knows
That you're standing on your own
    Blind and unguided
    Into a world divided
    You're thrown
Where you're never quite the same
    Although you try,try and try
    To tell yourself
    You really are
But in your heart-uncertainty forever lies
    And you'll always be
    Somewhere on the outside

    Whoa-oh-oh
    Whoa-oh
    Here's to teenage memories

    Whoa-oh-oh
    Whoa-oh
    Here's to teenage

Can I call wake you up on a Sunday?
Late night, I think we need to get away
Head lights, hold tight turn the radio loud
Let me know where to go and I'll get you there
Tell the truth and I'll show you how to dare
Flash lights held tight we could own this town
    Never say goodbye

And so kiss me, kiss me, kiss me
And tell me that I'll see you again
    'Cause I don't know,
If I can let you go

And so kiss me, kiss me, kiss me
I'm dying just to see you again
    Let's make tonight
    The best of our lives,
    Yeah
    Here's to teenage memories

    Whoa-oh-oh
    Whoa-oh
    Here's to teenage memories

Close your eyes you'll be mine and it's alright
Take a breath no rest till the sunrise
Heartbeat so sweet, when your lips touch mine
We don't have to go home right now,
We're never gonna stop 'cause we're dreaming out loud
We know what we want, we know we're going to get it somehow
    Never say goodbye

And so kiss me, kiss me, kiss me
And tell me that I'll see you again
    'Cause I don't know,
If I can let you go

So kiss me, kiss me, kiss me
I'm dying just to see you again

    Kiss Me Kiss Me
  • This up-tempo track finds the guys singing about two lovers getting in one last kiss before saying goodbye. Luke and Calum from the band co-wrote the song with Time Low frontman Alex Gaskarth and producer/songwriter John Feldman who has worked with All Time Low, Good Charlotte, and Boys Like Girls.
  • Asked by Coup de Main magazine how the 5 Seconds Of Summer songwriting process works, Luke replied: "We usually go to write with other people and we'll go in groups of two, so for instance me and Michael will go to a songwriting session, and then Calum and Ashton will go to one. We usually come with an idea to write about or the people that we're writing with will have an idea, and then we'll try and build a song from that."

    Dressed To Kill Lyrics

I know it's hard for you
To understand what I'm going through
But now I sit here to remind myself
    You're always Dressed To Kill
And you feel like you owe it to the world
But you owe it to yourself
    And you're, you're not here
    And I can't stop pretending
    That you're forever mine

    And I
I can't dream anymore since you left
I miss you singing me to sleep
I can't wake anymore in your arms
I miss you singing me to sleep
Cheer up my friends I'll say

    You're better alone anyways
    But you're always on tour
    And you're never home
    I'm always dressed to kill
And I feel like I owe it to the world
But I owe it to myself
    And you're, you're not here
    And I can't stop pretending
    That you're forever mine

    And I
I can't dream anymore since you left
I miss you singing me to sleep
I can't wake anymore in your arms
I miss you singing me to sleep
Cheer up my friends I'll say

    And I can't stop pretending
    That you're forever mine
    You're better alone anyways
And you're not here, not here
I can't dream anymore since you left
I miss you singing me to sleep
I can't wake anymore in your arms
I miss you singing me to sleep
Cheer up my friends all say

    Dressed To Kill
  • This song is the story of a boy and a girl. She lives next door and is always "dressed to kill" and really pretty, but she has a boyfriend. They secretly have crushes on each other, but in the end they find out and live happily ever after. (thanks, Julia - Buffalo, NY)
  • Chad Gilbert (guitar) told Kerrang! magazine February 16, 2008: "It's about having to break up a relationship!" Steve Klein (guitar) added: "It's basically saying that you know the girl is good enough to get somebody else. We all talk about our problems with each other. That's what makes our songs so emotional. Chad will come with an idea, and then I'll kind of put myself in his shoes, and I write the song from that perspective. There are songs about all of us."
  • The video features Gilbert's screen idol, actress Rachel Leigh Cook. He admitted to Kerrang!: "I said to my friends, 'One of these days I'm going to meet this girl.' Then 4 years later we got her in our video."

  • Howling Bells vocalist Juanita Stein and lead guitarist Joel Stein wrote this song. Juanita recalled to Artist Direct : "It was an idea born in London. I went to visit him in Berlin where he lives, and we finished it together. It's a direct result of Joel and my energy. He's very similar to me in that he likes to be very direct and to the point. We wanted to create something really explosive musically. That's the inspiration behind the music."
  • Juanita explained the song's meaning: "Lyrically, we're dealing with a lot of big issues in the song like sin and forgiveness," she said. "It's about learning to accept certain things, forgive yourself, and move on. I imagine it's a very universal thing."

    Wuthering Heights Lyrics

Out on the wiley, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green.
You had a temper like my jealousy:
    Too hot, too greedy.
    How could you leave me,
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you. I loved you, too.

    Bad dreams in the night.
They told me I was going to lose the fight,
    Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
    Wuthering Heights.

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

Ooh, it gets dark! It gets lonely,
On the other side from you.
I pine a lot. I find the lot
    Falls through without you.
    I'm coming back, love.
    Cruel Heathcliff, my one dream,
    My only master.

Too long I roam in the night.
I'm coming back to his side, to put it right.
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering,
    Wuthering Heights,

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

    Ooh! Let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
    Ooh! Let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
    You know it's me--Cathy!

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
    Come home. I'm so cold!
    Let me in-a-your window.

    Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.

    Wuthering Heights
  • This is based on Emily Bronte's classic book of the same name. The song pretty much tells the same story as the book, only at a much higher pitch.

In the book, two young people, Catherine and Heathcliff, are brought together and become lovers. Along the way, they struggle with issues of class and family. Wuthering Heights was Bronte's only novel, although she did publish some poems.
  • This was the first song Bush recorded for a label. It was released as a single, and while the music press dismissed the song as a novelty, it hit #1 in Britain. It stayed there for four weeks and launched her career at age 19.
  • Kate Bush and Emily Bronte share the same birthday, July 30th.
  • Kate started playing piano at age 11 and wrote her first song at 13. By the time she recorded the album, she had about 50 songs to choose from, but this wasn't one of them. She came up with it shortly before recording the album. She claims she wrote the song in one night under a full moon.
  • This was a huge hit everywhere except the US. This is the way it remained for Bush, who has never been able to break the US market.
  • Bush's label, EMI, wanted to release "James and the Cold Gun" as her first single, believing that radio stations wouldn't play this because it sounded too odd. When Kate found out, she insisted that "Wuthering Heights" be released first, but as a 19-year-old who had never released a song, she didn't have much say in the matter. Her label boss decided to let her have her way, figuring the song would flop and he would prove to Bush that he knew how to do his job better than she did. He was proven horribly wrong, and Bush was allowed to select her next single. Her choice was "The Man With The Child In His Eyes."
  • When this rose to #1 Kate Bush became the first female to top the UK charts with a self composed song.
  • Pat Benatar covered this on her 1980 album Crimes of Passion.
  • The guitar solo is by Ian Bairnson, formerly of Pilot. In the mid-'70s, they had a #5 hit in the US with "Magic" and a chart topper in the UK with "January."
  • Engineer Jon Kelly recalled Kate Bush's recording of the song in the book Classic Tracks: The Real Stories Behind 68 Seminal Recordings by Richard Buskin. "In the case of 'Wuthering Heights' she was imitating this witch, the mad lady from the Yorkshire Moors, and she was very theatrical about it.," he recalled. "She was such a mesmerising performer – she threw her heart and soul into everything she did – that it was difficult to ever fault her or say, 'You could do better.'"

"You couldn't keep Kate away from the sessions even if you had wild dogs and bazookas," Kelly added. "She was just drinking it all up, learning everything that went on. The first moment she walked into the control room, I could tell that's where she wanted to be; in control of her own records. She was astute, and she was also phenomenally easy to work with."
  • Bush re-recorded her vocal late one night, doing two or three takes from which producer Andrew Powell chose the best. "There was no compiling," Kelly confirmed. "It was a complete performance. We started the mix at around midnight and Kate was there the whole time, encouraging us. You couldn't deny her anything. So we got on with the job and finished at about five or six that morning."

    All Under One Roof Raving
  • Described as a "homage to the UK rave scene," this song combines steel drums and bone-rattling bass with vocal samples from Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore, the 1999 Mark Leckey-directed film about Britain's club culture.
  • Speaking about the song, Jamie said: "I made 'All Under One Roof Raving' whilst on the tail end of another year on the road with The xx. I was missing life in London and trawling through any music and videos that reminded me of home. One in particular I found very inspiring, Mark Leckey's Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore.

"I made this track in order to play out back home as I knew the year to come would be spent largely in the UK," he continued. "DJing and making my own album. It serves as a reminder, not to take any time for granted at home or away."

    Can we figure out

I been down since day one, yeah

Why you acting like you don't care?
I been down since day one

    Don't let the tables turn
    Don't let the bridges burn
    Been down for you
    Don't get it confused
Boy you could lose your turn
    Don't let the tables turn
    Don't let the bridges burn
'Cause everything could change in a matter of days
    Depending if you've learned

    Why you Acting Like That?
You gon' miss me when I'm gone
    Why you acting like that?
    (Why you acting like that?)
    Why you acting like that?
You gon' miss me when I'm gone
    Why you acting like that?
When I leave I'm taking off

Baddest bitch in the world right here
You ain't even gotta go nowhere
Boy you better watch the way you walk
'Cause if you trip you're gonna fall

    Don't let the tables turn
    Don't let the bridges burn
    Been down for you

You gon' miss me when I'm gone
Why you acting like that? (Iggy, Iggy, Iggy, Iggy, Iggy, Iggy)
When I leave I'm taking off

    Well shit, she may never
My love cost too baby, ain't nothing free
Check my angle, daddy, you could call me angel, daddy
Uh, but you gon' turn your beauty right into a beast
Now, this is the business of pleasure let's keep 'em separate
I ain't tryna be second, just for the record
I see you slippin' you trippin' just thought I should let you know
I admire your effort but I need better love
See many men try to play me 'til they get scared away
I told 'em that's just a fall, try another day
This is different, now I'm seeing that it isn't
Promise I'm not gon' cry here like Mary Jane
Now ain't that funny, that you was something special
'Til i noticed that you just like these losers who come in several but I
Know that if you leave you comin' right back
So my question boy is, why you acting like that?

    Don't let the tables turn
    Don't let the bridges burn

    Acting Like That
  • This song finds Lopez singing about a relationship on the rocks. Iggy Azalea jumps in with a verse spitting rhymes about needing a better love over RoccStar's tranquil beat. The Australian rapper told Ryan Seacrest how honored she was to work with one of her favorites when she was a youngster. "I definitely used to sit in my bedroom as a young girl and lip-sync Jennifer Lopez songs," she said, "so it's very cool to have a song with her on her album."

    3 AM Lyrics

She says it's cold outside and she hands me my raincoat
She's always worried about things like that
Well she says it's all gonna end and it might as well be my fault
And she only sleeps when its raining
And she screams, and her voice is straining

    [Chorus]
    And she says baby
    It's 3am I must be lonely
    When she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
And the rain's gonna wash away I believe this

She's got a little bit of something, god it's better than nothing
And in her color portrait world she believes that she's got it all
She swears the moon don't hang quite as high as it used to
And she only sleeps when its raining
And she screams, and her voice is straining

    [Chorus]

Well, she believes that life isn't made up of all that you're used to
And the clock on the wall has been stuck at 3 for days, and days
She thinks that happiness is the mat that sits on her doorway
    But outside its stopped raining

    [Chorus]

    Well it's 3am I must be lonely
Well hell, when she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes.

    3 AM
  • Lead singer Rob Thomas wrote this about the time he spent caring for his mother when she was sick with cancer. Thomas was 12 years old when she got the disease, and she was given 6 months to live. She beat it, and by the time Rob was 17, she was healthy and he left home to set out on his own. (thanks, Megan - Tracy, CA)
  • Thomas chose the time 3 am because it was an hour after the bars usually closed.
  • This came together when the band was known as Tabitha's Secret (Tabitha was the daughter on the TV show Bewitched). The band played in the Orlando area from 1993 until 1996, when Rob Thomas, Brain Yale and Paul Doucette signed a record deal and left to form Matchbox 20. The 2 members who were left behind continued as Tabitha's Secret and as a result of a lawsuit, were granted the rights to play and record this song, since they played on the demo of this that helped get Matchbox 20 the record deal.
  • The original version of this that helped get the band signed is acoustic. In 1998, the 2 remaining members of Tabitha's Secret released it on their album Don't Play With Matches. This version sounds a lot like Matchbox 20 and features Rob Thomas on vocals. Tabitha's Secret was allowed to release it, but couldn't mention any association with Matchbox 20 or use any photos of the band. To get around this, they put the names of the 5 members who recorded this (including Thomas) on the album cover.
  • The song was much slower when they first wrote it. When Matchbox 20 recorded their first album, they gave it a faster tempo.
  • This was Matchbox Twenty's second hit (after "Push"), and very important for the band because it proved they were not a one-hit-wonder.
  • Rob Thomas said at his 2006 Cleveland show with Jewel, "When I was younger I wrote songs all the time and at the time I thought they were great, but recently I looked at all the songs I wrote when I was younger and this was the first song I ever wrote that looking back on I still think is good." Troubeaux Lyrics

    This love is so dangerous
But I kinda like the thrill
    It’s like a sugar rush
It’s only the way you make me feel
    I didn't see you coming
    But you broke me down

    'Cause you got some ?
Walk up like I know you
    Bald head and your tattoos
    One smile and, oh

    I gotta admit you’re fly
And I love it how you talk babe
    Getting all in my mind
Running it like a field play
    I didn’t see you coming
    But you broke me down
    'Cause you got some ?
Walk up like I know you
    Bald head and your tattoos
    Damn

This is ain’t no ordinary boy
This is ain’t no ordinary boy
See the funny thing about you
You got me doing things I wouldn’t do
    You ain’t no ordinary boy
    You gon’ be trouble (oh)
    You gon’ be trouble (oh)
    You gon’ be trouble

I deep down know I, should be good
    I am blind
    You’re the kinda guy
That always got all these girls running after you
Do I entertain or play with you
    Or just be cool

    Cause you ?
Walk up like I know you
    Bald head and your tattoos
    One smile and, oh

    Don’t slip
I think I’m about to find
    So close
Wrapped up in the heat of it all
    I’ve had the fantasies
    Of how it’s gonna be

    'Cause you got ?
You walk up like I know you
    Bald head and your tattoos
    Damn

This is ain’t no ordinary boy
This is ain’t no ordinary boy
See the funny thing about you
You got me doing things I wouldn’t do
    You ain’t no ordinary boy

    You gon’ be trouble oh
    You gon’ be trouble oh
    You gon’ be trouble oh

Yo, got Henny in the cup, Jenny knows what's up
She with a real one not pretending to be tough
Got three cases, might have a warrant I don't know about
Beef I don't know about, weed I can’t go without
My money used to pile up every beginning of the month
Unconditional love, in the beginning it was lust
Hustler, shooter, was a dealer on the block
Now my future’s on top no longer dealing with the thots
I don’t go nowhere without the handle
Like I heard Lil' Boosie was out in Louisiana
Got friends in the fed, some dead over drugs
Fucking with me it’s high-risk but she still in love (we in love baby)
Benny Medina might wanna pay me to leave ya
I’m bad for your image, the ghetto menacing diva
‘cause some say Nas is trouble
We all in, just ignore them nice guys is boring, I got you

This is ain’t no ordinary boy
This is ain’t no ordinary boy
See the funny thing about you
You got me doing things I wouldn’t do
    You ain’t no ordinary boy

    You gon’ be trouble oh
    You gon’ be trouble oh
    You gon’ be trouble oh
    You gon’ be trouble oh
    You gon’ be trouble

    Troubeaux
  • This song finds J.Lo yearning for a man who she believes is her dream lover. However, she recognizes the imminent complications of a troublesome romance. The song title is pronounced "trouble."
  • Nas adds some rhymes to the track, rapping about leaving the streets behind and settling down with his newfound love. The two artists previously joined forces on the 2002 song, "I'm Gonna Be Alright." when Nas replaced 50 Cent on the radio version.
  • The song samples the sax solo from Tom Scott and the California Dreamers' 1967 jazz cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Today." The sax solo was famously borrowed by Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth for their classic tune, "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" as well as by Lupe Fiasco for his 2012 single "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)."

Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) Lyrics

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life

So take the photographs, and still-frames in your mind
Hang it on the shelf of good health and good time
Tattoo's of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life

    Publisher: Warner/Chappell Music, Inc.

Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
  • Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this when his girlfriend moved to Ecuador. He tried to be levelheaded about it, but to show his anger, he named the song "Good Riddance" and made "Time Of Your Life" the subtitle. The song shows us about life, how we are not to question it and keep moving on. (thanks, Rainah - Tacoma, WA)
  • This was written as an acoustic song to distinguish it from the heavily produced rock music that was popular in the '90s. Armstrong recalled to Spin Magazine in a 2010 interview: "That was really the first time we attempted a ballad. The first time we ever played that song was during an encore in New Jersey - I had to pound a beer backstage to get up the courage. I knew we were gonna take a tomato to the face."

The song was such a sonic departure for the band that record stores reported a high rate of returns from customers who purchased the Nimrod album expecting similar songs.
  • Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song in 1993 and submitted it for the band's first major label album, Dookie, which was released in 1994. Both the band and their label agreed that it was a great song, but didn't fit on the album, which was loaded with Punk blasters. The song was held back and included on the Nimrod album.
  • This song was featured on two very high-profile TV shows in 1998. It was used on the penultimate Seinfeld episode in a scene where the cast takes a nostalgic look back at all the adventures they had on the show. It also featured in the ER in an episode "Gut Reaction," in a scene where a young boy dies of cancer.
  • The album version begins with guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong playing a wrong note. He begins again, repeats the wrong note, and proclaims "f--k!". Then the actual song begins. Radio versions, of course, omit this. (thanks, Tom - New York, NY)
  • This played when England walked onto the pitch in their football match against France in the 1998 World Cup. (thanks, Leanne - Crawley, England)
  • This was the official theme for golf's PGA Tour in 1998. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • This won for Best Alternative Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards.
  • Billie Joe Armstrong came up for the video's concept. Directed by Mark Kohr, it pauses on ordinary moments in people's everyday lives. To capture the "still frames in your mind," the extras were told not too blink, but some of them couldn't help it. Armstrong does plenty of blinking, but you won't see him smiling. Drummer Tre Cool chipped Armstrong's front teeth while he was throwing television sets out of their hotel window - a stunt that nearly cost them the video.
