Up Again Lyrics

I've given Up Again, maybe I'm just tired
Of thinking that there's one way, only one way out
I was hoping by now, that maybe I'd have found
Answers to the questions that are keeping me down

Even though I'm not over it yet
I can put forever in the plans that you have
Stupid and low with the odds that you bet
I can put forever in the plans that you have

Take my life and start it somewhere else
I breathe in the change
The only way is up again
Everybody knows that I
Won't make the same mistakes
The only way is up again

I wanna take it back, everything we had
The curse of love has had me and it turned my heart bad
With a will there's a way, definite, you say
I'm looking out to the water, I'm singing my heart out

Even though I'm not really over it yet
I can see forever in the plans that you had
Stupid low with odds that had you bet
I can see forever in the plans that you had

I've given up again, maybe I'm just tired
Of thinking that there was one way, only one way out
I was hoping by now, that maybe I'd have found
Answers to the questions that are keeping me down

Take my life and start it somewhere else
I breathe in the change
The only way is up again
Everybody knows that I
Won't make the same mistakes
The only way is up again

It's time to take it back, everything we had
The curse of love is healthy if it gives your heart back
With a will there's a way, to definite, you say
I'm running out to the water, I'm singing my heart out

Take my life and start it somewhere else
I breathe in the change
The only way is up again
Everybody knows that I
Won't make the same mistakes
The only way is up again

I've given up again, maybe I'm just tired
Of thinking that there's one way, only one way out
I was hoping by now, that maybe I'd have found
Answers to the questions that are keeping me down

(I'm singing my heart out)
The only way is up again
(I'm singing my heart out)

Up Again
  • The song features guest vocalist Rae Morris, who also filled in for three tracks on Bombay Bicycle Club's 2014 album, So Long, See You Tomorrow, while the band's regular collaborator, Lucy Rose, was on tour. She told Digital Spy about the collaboration. "I met Clean Bandit through my label. We're both on Atlantic. We'd met a couple of times and Jack [Patterson], he sent me just an instrumental track of 'Up Again' and it was actually called 'Hardcore Desk' or something, it has like a really weird name."

"I was in my shed in Blackpool, that's where I was writing songs, and yeah I wrote the melody and lyrics for that."

Mama Said Knock You Out Lyrics

    Don't call it a comeback
    I've been here for years
    I'm rocking my peers
    Puttin' suckers in fear
Makin' the tears rain down like a monsoon
Listen to the bass go boom
    Explosions, overpowerin'
    Over the competition I'm towerin'
Wrecking shop when I write these lyrics
That'll make you call the cops
Don't you dare stare, you better move
    Don't ever compare
Me to the rest that'll all get sliced and diced
    Competition's payin' the price

    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama Said Knock You Out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out

Don't you call this a regular jam
    I'm gonna rock this land
I'm gonna take this itty-bitty world by storm
    And I'm just gettin' warm
    Just like Muhammed Ali
    They called him Cassius
Watch me bash this beat like a skull
That you know I've beef with
Why do you riff with me
    The maniac psycho
And when I pull out my jammy get ready
    Cause I might go Blaw!
    How you like me now?
    The ripper will not allow
You to get with Mr. Swift or Rift,
    Listen to my gears shift
    I'm blasting, I'm blasting
Kinda like shaft, so you can say I'm shafting
Oh, English filled my mind, and I came up with a funky rhyme

    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out

Shadow boxing when I heard you on the radio, UH
    I just don't know
What made you forget that I was raw
But now I gotta new tour
    I'm going insane
    Startin' the hurricane
    Releasin' pain
    Lettin' you know
    You can't gain or maintain
    Unless you say my name
    Rippin'
    Killin'
    Diggin' and drillin' a hole
    Pass the Old Gold

    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out

    Shotgun blasts are heard
When I rip and kill at will
The man of the hour, tower of power
    I'll devour
I'm gonna tie you up and let you understand
That I'm not your average man
When I gotta jammy in my hand
    Damn!
    Oh!
Listen to the way I slay
    Your crew
    Damage
    Damage
    Destruction, terror, and mayhem
Pass me a sissy so sucker I'll slay him
    Farmers (what)
    Farmers (what)
    I'm ready (we're ready)
    I think I'm gonna bomb a town
    Get down
    Don't you never, ever
    Pull my lever
    Cause I explode
And my nine is easy to load
    I gotta thank God
'Cause he gave me the strength to rock Hard

    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out

    Mama Said Knock You Out
  • LL Cool J has said that the title of this song came to him during an instance in which he was having trouble getting direction with his writing. When his grandmother heard about this, she gave him the simple advice to "knock them out," hence the song title. (thanks, Brian - Edmonton, Canada)
  • LL Cool J wrote this song about staying on top of the rap game. It was one of the first rap hits to use lots of artillery imagery, with bombs, shotguns and a 9mm pistol showing up in the rather bellicose lyric.

LL's lyrics are purely metaphorical, but around this time real violence within the hip-hop community was becoming a major problem. With the rise of "gangsta" rap, similar lyrics were often far more literal, depicting real-life events and credible threats.
  • This won the Grammy award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
  • LL Cool J performed this on the MTV acoustic showcase Unplugged when he became the first rapper to appear on the show.

    New Eyes Lyrics

In the quiet of my room
I gather up my thoughts and questions
Could I ever be like you?
Could I ever be a person, so real and so true?
    It seems implausible
    I look at my reflection
    If only I could say
    The things I never mention
    The things you never knew

And I'd like to thank you for the human I've become
I'm sorry if I've let you down
I'm trying, I'm learning as I stumble along
To see this new world without your eyes

Once upon a time there was a girl who so much loved the world
She gave her only begotten sunshine
And dried her stained eyes on a neck tie
Took the best lies made 'em truths
And spit sad soliloquies in the booth
'Cause people think they know but they barely knew
The reality of what the other-siders do
But I've been there, I've learned that
Seen a whole bunch of world and done came back
Got a reckoning for wrecking in my knapsack
'Bout to journey on foot through the outback
GRRRL PRTY is the label on my snapback
Doin' worldwide shows in a black hat
'Bout to tell your ass a story so take that
Free prophecies from a black cat

Seen his demise with a pair of brand New Eyes
    It was sickening, guy
Never wanted to be stickin' it to thickening thighs
But now he deeper than the secrets that he keep with a lie
"Mm, tastes good!" baby say with a cry
    Now wait
Thinkin' about it too much, too much
    Deepen the profit sooner, sooner
He never wanted to be a loser
But the bruises of losing is oozing through his fingers
The tips that like to brush at my hips
Is now at the hilt of a sword, Lord
    On the battlefield, torn, sworn
To never think about another lover
Hopin' he had time to recover but nothing's ever easy
Beware the sting of queen bee (Grr!)

And I'd like to thank you for the human I've become
I'm sorry if I've let you down
I'm trying, I'm learning as I stumble along
To see this new world without your eyes

So many things in he I would like to be
Wiser, more light on my feet
I could look up in the mirror and change me
Or right over my shoulder and save me
Thinkin' about back, back when, when I ain't have nothing
Not a thing or a ring to my name
Now my feet in the game, knee deep, don't speak
Feelin' like Gwen Stefani in this thing
But I can't complain 'cause we asked for this
Feelin' like a workaholic or a masochist
Don't call like I should like it's sacrilege
To make a dollar in a dream into packed venues
Take a second, put your shield down
Laying down my sword, getting off the battlefield now
Makin' bigger moves, bigger pictures in my view now
Get up out of my way I've got ammo for days, pow!

I can feel the weight of wars you've lost
    They're victories in my eyes
Every swing you take brings me closer and closer
Open the gates and I'm poised to charge
You told me we'd never get this far
Now we at the final round
There's no way we'll escape battle scars
    Battle scars

And I'd like to thank you for the human I've become
I'm sorry if I've let you down
I'm trying, I'm learning as I stumble along
To see this new world without your eyes

    New Eyes
  • The title track of Clean Bandit's debut album was written in a place in France called Nouailles. Cellist Grace Chatto recalled: "No one was quite sure how to pronounce it and our manager nicknamed it as 'New Eyes', which stuck... It's the most personal song on the album, so we gave the album the same title."
  • The song features the voices of Clean Bandit bass guitarist and keyboardist Jack Patterson as well as US rapper Lizzo.

Tell me true tell me why was Jesus crucified
Is it for this that daddy died?
Was it for you? was it me?
Did I watch too much t.v.?
Is that a hint of accusation in your eyes?
If it wasn't for the nips
Being so good at building ships
The yards would still be open on the clyde
And it can't be much fun for them
    Beneath the rising sun
With all their kids committing suicide
What have we done maggie what have we done
What have we done to England
Should we shout should we scream
"What happened to The Post War Dream?"
Oh Maggie Maggie what have we done?

    The Post War Dream
  • The album was dedicated to Roger Waters' father, Eric Fletcher Waters, who died in WW2 at the battle of the Anzio bridge. (thanks, Lee - Durham, NC)
  • Anzio was a beach on the coast of Italy stormed mainly by the British (thus the lyric "The Anzio beachhead was held at the price of a few hundred ornery lives."). "Maggie" is Margaret Thatcher, who was the prime minister when the song was written (Winston Churchill was PM of England in WW2). "Tell me true, tell me why was Jesus crucified" was just Waters searching for some justification for his father being taken from him (also see "Was it you? Was it me? Did I watch too much TV?"). (thanks, Dan - Fort Collins, CO)
  • Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright was not on this album. He was kicked out of the band by Waters right before the release of The Wall. Many people say The Final Cut is a Roger Waters solo album. The lyrics in this album are depressing and serious, which shows you how angry Waters was at the time. (thanks, Lee - Durham, NC)

January always brings a fear of creatures
Strong-holdings and salt in places yet to heal
Crying at the site of strings
She was there when they came for you
A great man and the child in you
Enough when I take you far from here
Enough to cut a morning view

Strange how a sound could change your feelings
    Staring wide and dirty breathing
I remember how a calling came in
Scared of deceiving and all I could hear was "Run!"

    The fire, the fire

January always brings a fear of creatures
Strong-holdings and salt in places yet to heal

  • The song's music video was filmed along the Cornish coastline and stars the band's Cambridge contemporary Lily Cole as a mermaid. Asked by Rookie Creative how they got the model to be in the clip, violinist Neil Amin-Smith replied: "Lily's a friend of friend, and when Jack (Patterson, keyboards) decided he wanted a beautiful mermaid character asking her was a no-brainer! She was incredibly professional and generous with her time, especially as we were asking her to get in a murky pool outside in early January."
  • Clean Bandit almost accidentally electrocuted Lily Cole during the filming of the video. "In hindsight, maybe we should have had a couple of safety officers on board," Patterson told Billboard magazine with a smile. "But we take our videos very seriously. We are completely willing to die for them."

    When I'm Gone Lyrics

There's another world inside of me that you may never see.
There's secrets in this life that I can't hide.
Somewhere in this darkness there's a light that I can't find.
    Maybe it's too far away
    Or maybe I'm just blind
    Maybe I'm just blind

So hold me when I'm here, right me when I'm wrong,
Hold me when I'm scared, and love me When I'm Gone.
Everything I am, and everything in me I'll also be the one you wanted me to be.
I'll never let you down, even if I could I'd give up everything if only for your good.
So hold me when I'm here, right me when I'm wrong.
You can hold me when I'm scared, you won't always be there, so love me when I'm gone.
    Love me when I'm gone.

When your education x-ray cannot see under my skin.
I won't tell you a damn thing that I could not tell my friends.
Roaming through this darkness, I'm alive, but I'm alone.
Part of me is fighting this, but part of me is gone.

    Maybe I'm just blind.

So hold me when I'm here, right me when I'm wrong,
Hold me when I'm scared, and love me when I'm gone.
Everything I am, and everything in me I'll also be the one you wanted me to be.

    When I'm Gone
  • "When I'm Gone" does not necessarily mean "when I'm gone in a permanent sense." When Brad Arnold wrote this song, the subject he had in mind was unconditional love, for when you're removed from your loved one by miles, or time, or other obstacles. "It's asking a question, just please love me when I'm gone," says the lead singer. "And not just like when I'm dead and gone, but when I'm gonna come back. And that's kind of one thing it's about. But at the same time it's kind of about unconditional love. It's a lot of different statements it's asking of the person in that song. And it's like just the fulfillment of those different needs for every situation that it mentions. So I guess that song is just about needing someone really to be there for you unconditionally, and when you're gone."
  • An "education x-ray," explains Brad, would refer to a psychologist or therapist who doesn't actually take an x-ray of you with a machine, but rather forms a sort of mental x-ray of you by way of their educational training, and the time spent talking with you to make a diagnosis. In Brad's words: "It's when a kid's mom or dad is quick to take them to a psychologist or something, and it's like talking about their education x-ray trying to look into you. It's like, 'I'm not gonna tell you a damn thing that I couldn't tell my friends.'" (Check out our full interview with Brad Arnold)
  • Although the lyrics don't have anything to do with the army or war, the music video was dedicated to all the men and women serving in the United States military.
  • This song gained popularity around the time the US was preparing to invade Iraq. For many people in the military, it said a lot about how they were feeling being away from their families and loved ones, and reminded them that everyone back home was still thinking of them. Animal Ambition
  • Asked by Digital Spy about the meaning behind the title Animal Ambition, 50 replied: "It is an untamed desire to win. I get high off these situations; I get high off being right. When you walk into the studio I'm not the guy listening to the snare by itself clap, clap, clap, clap, pop, bing, pop. I need to hear something that has the right pattern in it. I'll write the melodies and the words to it and know it's a hit."

"Knowing it's a hit is more valuable than you making it. It's about hearing a hit record, timing the hit record, getting the right producers in who have a higher possibility of walking out of that room with a hit," he continued. "Dre and Timbaland are those guys for me. It's their particular sound; Dre's is harder, his production is harder and my style of writing kind of matches it."
  • 50 Cent raps here that he's frightened of rats:

Damn scared of rats, but I'm ready for anything

The rapper explained to The Guardian that he's not talking about the pesky long-tailed rodents. "No, I'm scared of what people may say to the police for no reason," he said. "I'm the guy from the neighborhood who's becoming a symbol of hope. They look at me and go, 'It is possible to make it.' I took all the dysfunctional behavior, everything damaging or that wasn't good in my life, and I turned it into the most beautiful nightmare you can actually create. That's my life."

    At Seventeen Lyrics

I learned the truth At Seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
    The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth

And those of us with ravaged faces
    Lacking in the social graces
    Desperately remained at home
    Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say - come dance with me
    And murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems at seventeen

A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
Said - pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve
    The rich relationed hometown queen
    Marries into what she needs
    With a guarantee of company
    And haven for the elderly

So remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
In debentures of quality and dubious integrity
Their small-town eyes will gape at you
In dull surprise when payment due
    Exceeds accounts received at seventeen

To those of us who knew the pain
    Of valentines that never came
And those whose names were never called
    When choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
When dreams were all they gave for free
To ugly duckling girls like me

We all play the game, and when we dare
    We cheat ourselves at solitaire
    Inventing lovers on the phone
    Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say - come on, dance with me
    And murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me, at seventeen

    At Seventeen
  • In our interview with Janis Ian, she explained that this song is about feeling alienated while growing up. It was more about Janis' life between the ages of 12-14, but "17" fit better into the lyrics.
  • Janis was 15 when she had her first hit song, "Society's Child," and had been on the road for two years by the time she was 17. Although her childhood was not typical, she knew what it felt like to feel out of place at a young age.
  • Speaking about crafting this story, Janis explained in our interview: "I never went to a prom, but I did go to my 6th grade dance. That's the trick, it's just like acting. How many people are playing Hamlet whose father is a king? You take your own experience, find something similar in it and draw on that. Even though I didn't go to the prom, I knew what it was like not to get asked to the dance."
  • This song came at an opportune time for Ian. She told us: "I had to move back into my mom's house because I was broke and I couldn't make any money on the road. I was sitting at the kitchen table with a guitar one day, and I was reading a New York Times article about a debutante, and the opening line was 'I learned the truth at 18.' I was playing that little samba figure, and that line struck me for some reason. The whole article was about how she learned being a debutante didn't mean that much. I changed it to 17 because 18 didn't scan."
  • Janis wrote the first verse quickly, finding it flowed in a logical pattern: "I leaned the truth at 17," what did you learn... "that love what meant for beauty queens," and who else... "and high school girls with clear skinned smiles," what do we not like about that... "who married young and then retired." The chorus was a lot harder to write. Janis explains that at some point you don't have a lot of control over a song. You can control the craft, but not the inspiration.
  • Janis told us: "I wrote the first verse and chorus and it was so brutally honest. It's hard to imagine now but people weren't writing that type of song then. I was coming out of listening to people like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, who did write those kind of songs, but pop music and folk music really didn't. I remember thinking I couldn't blow this because it really was going to be a good song. I put it away for three weeks and it took about three months to write the whole thing. I couldn't figure out the ending, I couldn't figure out what to do with her, then I thought I would recap it, bring myself into it and bring it into the past."
  • When she went to record this, Janis knew it was going to be a hit and wanted to make sure it came out right. She kicked the lead guitarist out of the session because he wasn't trying very hard to capture the feel of the song, replacing him with a young kid who was "so scared you could smell his sweat across the room." This made the other musicians in the room pay attention, and helped capture the feeling of confusion and adolescence Janis was going for.
  • Janis Ian: "To me it's never been a depressing song. It says 'ugly duckling girls like me,' and to me the ugly duckling always turns into a swan. It offers hope that there is a world out there of people who understand."
  • Getting this on the radio was no easy task. Not only was it packed with lyrics, but at 3:56, it was about a minute longer than most songs radio stations were playing. Janis and her management decided to market it to women, and because radio stations were dominated by men, they had to get creative. They sent copies of the song to the program director's wives, then put Janis on every daytime TV show they could. It was six months of exhausting, grassroots promotion, which paid off when they got a spot on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. This pushed the song over the top and it became a hit.
  • This was nominated for five Grammy Awards, the most any female artist had ever been nominated for at the time. It won for Best Female Pop Vocal.
  • Ian performed this song on the first episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975. (thanks, Michael - Mountain View, CA)

  • Speaking with Radio.com , Leithauser admitted that he is "obsessive" and often wakes up in the middle of the night thinking about how he can make a song better. "Sometimes I can't stop thinking about songs, and it will make me feel crazy," he said.

This song is a case in point as Leithauser spent nearly a year working on the tune, trying to get it just right. "I couldn't sleep, but I couldn't finish it. It made me crazy," he said. "Usually 99 percent of the time with songs like that, you lose the fight [and] it never comes out, but not this time."

    Of Walking Abortion Lyrics

Life is lead weights, pendulum died
Pure or lost, spectator or crucified
    Recognised truth acedia's blackest hole
Junkies winos whores the nation's moral suicide
    Loser - liar - fake - phoney
    No-one cares, everyone is guilty
Fucked up - don't know why - you poor little boy

We are all Of Walking Abortions
Shalom shalom we all love our children
We all are of walking abortions
Shalom shalom there are no horizons

Mussolini hangs from a butcher's hook
Hitler reprised in the worm of your soul
Horthy's corpse screened to a million
Tisu revived, the horror of a bullfight
Fragments of uniforms, open black ruins
A moral conscience - you've no wounds to show
So wash your car in your 'X' baseball shoes

We all are of walking abortions
Shalom shalom we all love our children
We are all of walking abortions
Shalom shalom there are no horizons

    Little people in little houses
Like maggots small blind and worthless
The massacred innocent blood stains us all
Who's responsible - you fucking are
Who's responsible - you fucking are
Who's responsible - you fucking are
Who's responsible - you fucking are
    Who's responsible

    Of Walking Abortion
  • The idea for this came from feminist writer Valerie Solanos's S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men) manifesto in which she states: "the male chromosome is an incomplete female chromosome. In other words the male is a walking abortion; aborted at the gene stage. To be male is to be deficient, emotionally limited; maleness is a deficient disease and males are emotional cripples." Solanos spent 3 years in jail after she shot Andy Warhol 3 times in 1968. She died in 1988. (thanks, nicholas - London, England)

    Tattoo Lyrics

I could spray-paint "I love you" on that bridge or in the sky
And I could swear when you say it to me, there's a good chance I could fly
And I might, it seems like, yeah,
If it's gonna be any night, it might as well be tonight

There's this thing that you do,
You don't know that it does something to me, yeah
I've seen the way that you sway, that you talk,
That you touch, that you kiss, that you breathe
That I need, you look at me, girl
You're shaking things up like you wouldn't believe,
Crashing my comfort zone, setting me free
It's a "who would've thought?", "you'd never dream" kind of thing

Your name, your name sounds so good next to mine, just saying
And I think, I think I'm gonna put it in all my rhymes, baby
'Cause with you, I'm gonna do quite a few things that I never thought I would do
Your name, your name, your name
Would be a good Tattoo, yeah

    Would be a good tattoo

Ink it in on my skin, sign me up, make it last against the time
'Cause this is more than a picture that fades of a first date Friday night
It's unerasable, unmistakable, hey, everybody wants to know
Now I think I know, I'll wear it on my sleeve, I gotta let it show
Making a promise that I never wanna let you go

Your name, your name sounds so good next to mine, just saying
And I think, I think I'm gonna put it in all my rhymes, baby
'Cause with you, I'm gonna do quite a few things that I never thought I would do
Your name, your name, your name
Would be a good tattoo, yeah

All my life, all I got is this one heart to give
And all my life, all this time, I've been searching for this
Oh and it looks like I found it
    Yeah, I finally found it
Girl, it's you oh oh oh

Your name, your name sounds so good next to mine
And I think, I think I'm gonna put it in all my rhymes, yeah
'Cause with you, I'm gonna do quite a few things that I never thought I would do
Your name, your name, your name
Would be a good tattoo, yeah

    Would be a good tattoo

    Only you, baby
    Only you, now
    Only you, now

  • The second single from Storyline, Hayes penned the song with Louisiana native Troy Verges, with whom he also collaborated on "Wanted" and Barry Dean who also co-wrote Little Big Town's "Pontoon."
  • Hayes told Billboard magazine that the song, "is a step in a different direction for me lyrically." He added that it is, "talking about something I know nothing about. But, it's a version of a love song. It's the comfort zone of home, but also changing things up a little bit."
  • The song finds Hayes singing of getting a permanent inking of his girl's name. "When you write someone's name in a tattoo, you've made a decision, and you've made a decision hopefully based on a gut feeling that's real and deep," the country hitmaker explained of the song. "[It's] telling someone that I'm ok with this being permanent, I'm ok with this being forever. That's how good I feel about this."

Hunter Hayes doesn't actually have any tattoos in real life.
  • The song's music video finds Hayes using both graffiti to try to win a girl's heart and a retro stereo to capture that giddy feeling of falling in love. "With a song like 'Tattoo,' it's a very visual thing," the singer explained to People Country. "Lyrically, the goal is to bring you to a place where all these artistic elements of inspiration come to life around you. So, for the video, rather than just explain how a relationship can inspire you, we wanted to go beyond the expected and make a musically inspired moment jump out of a two-dimensional space."

"My goal is to always do something a little unexpected and different, but especially with this video, I wanted to challenge the imagination," he added. "We brought in a graffiti artist … and we made this abandoned warehouse into a giant re-imagined boom box. When you see the video, though, even then you'll see this art piece of a graffiti artist come to life in a way even we couldn't imagine."
  • Barry Dean recalled the story of the song to American Songwriter magazine: "Hunter was just getting back off the road, as in he literally got in 30 minutes before we wrote that morning. He showed up and mentioned that he liked the idea of writing a song with the word 'tattoo.' Hunter is always good about not going with the obvious, so we came up with the angle of the song coming from his perspective instead and the song just took off from there."
  • Barry Dean and Troy Verges penned the song the day after they wrote "Day Drinking" with Little Big Town.

    Sing For The Moment Lyrics

These ideas are nightmares to white parents
Whose worst fear is a child with dyed hair and who likes earrings
Like whatever they say has no bearing
It's so scary in a house that allows no swearing
To see him walking around with his headphones blaring
Alone in his own zone, cold and he don't care
He's a problem child, what bothers him all comes out
When he talks about his fuckin' dad walkin' out
Cause he hates him so bad that he blocks him out
If he ever saw him again, he'd probably knock him out
His thoughts are whacked, he's mad so he's talkin' back
Talkin' black, brainwashed from rock and rap
He sags his pants, do rags and a stocking cap
His stepfather hit him so he socked him back
And broke his nose, this house is a broken home
There's no control, he just let's his emotions go

(Come on) Sing with me, (Sing), sing for the years
(Sing it) Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears (Come on)
Sing it with me, just for today,
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away

Entertainment is changing, intertwining' with gangsters
In the land of the killers, a sinner's mind is a sanctum
Holy or unholy, only have one homie
Only this gun, lonely, 'cause don't anyone know me
But everybody just feels like they can relate
I guess words are a motherfucker, they can be great
Or they can degrade, or even worse, they can teach hate
It's like these kids hang on every single statement we make
Like they worship us, plus all the stores ship us platinum
Now how the fuck did this metamorphosis happen?
From standin' on corners and porches just rappin'
To havin' a fortune, no more kissin' ass
But then these critics crucify you, journalists try to burn you
Fans turn on you, attorneys all want a turn at you
To get their hands on every dime you have
They want you to lose your mind every time you mad
So they can try to make you out to look like a loose canon
Any dispute, won't hesitate to produce handguns
That's why these prosecutors wanna convict me
Strictly just to get me off of these streets quickly
But all their kids been listenin' to me religiously
So I'm signing CD's while police fingerprint me
They're for the judges daughter, but his grudge is against me
If I'm such a fuckin' menace, this shit doesn't make sense b
It's all political, if my music is literal then I'm a criminal
How the fuck can I raise a little girl?
    I couldn't, I wouldn't be fit to
You're full of shit too, Guerrera, that was a fist that hit you

(Come on) Sing with me, (Sing), sing for the years
(Sing it) Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears (Come on)
Sing it with me, just for today,
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away

They say music can alter moods and talk to you
Well can it load a gun up for you and cock it too?
Well if it can, then the next time you assault a dude
Just tell the judge it was my fault, and I'll get sued
See what these kids do, is hear about us totin' pistols
And they want to get one, 'cus they think the shit's cool
Not knowin' we're really just protectin' ourselves
We entertainers, of course the shit's affecting ourselves
You ignoramus but music is reflection of self
We just explain it, and then we get our checks in the mail
It's fucked up ain't it, how we can come from practically nothin'
To bein' able to have any fuckin' thing that we wanted
That's why we sing for these kids that don't have a thing
Except for a dream and a fuckin' rap magazine
Who post pinup pictures on their walls all day long
Idolize they favorite rappers and know all they songs
Or for anyone who's ever been through shit in they lives
'Til they sit and they cry at night, wishing they die
'Til they throw on a rap record, and they sit and they vibe
We're nothing to you, but we're the fuckin' shit in their eyes
That's why we seize the moment, and try to freeze it and own it
Squeeze it and hold it, 'cause we consider these minutes golden
And maybe they'll admit it when we're gone
Just let our spirits live on, through our lyrics that you hear in our songs
    And we can

(Come on) Sing with me, (Sing), sing for the years
(Sing it) Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears (Come on)
Sing it with me, just for today,
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away

(Come on) Sing with me, (Sing), sing for the years
(Sing it) Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears (Come on)
Sing it with me, just for today,
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away

    Sing For The Moment
  • In this song Eminem raps about how people are always trying to be like him and what it's really like to be a rapper and how hard it can be. (thanks, Joe - Gloversville, NY)
  • This samples the vocals from the 1973 Aerosmith hit "Dream On." While the sounds of Steven Tyler were sampled, his Aerosmith bandmate Joe Perry recorded the guitar solo used in this song specifically for Eminem.
  • The line, "You're full of s--t too, Guerra, that was a fist that hit you" is a reference to a fight Eminem had with John Guerra, who he saw kissing his wife outside a Detroit area bar in June of 2000. Police said Eminem hit Guerra with a gun, and Guerra received a settlement of $100,000. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Eminem was addressing here the critics who didn't understand why people were identifying with him. He explained in an annotated comment on Rap Genius : "I realized I was becoming like the rappers that I looked up to as a kid. I identified with and loved LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys. I felt like if everybody didn't understand their music, it didn't matter - they were speaking to me. So that's what I was trying to make people realize on this track."
