Silence Lyrics

Give me release
Witness me
I am outside
Give me peace

Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe
That I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

In this white wave
I am sinking
In this Silence
In this white wave
In this silence
I believe

Passion chokes the flower
Till she cries no more
possessing all the beauty
Hungry still for more

Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe
That I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

In this white wave
I am sinking
In this silence
In this white wave
In this silence
I believe

I can't help this loning
Comfort me
I can't hold it all in
If you won't let me

Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe
That I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

In this white wave
I am sinking
In this silence
In this white wave
In this silence
I believe

Silence
  • This trance anthem finds the Canadian electronic music group Delerium linking up with Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan. Originally released with a slower tempo on the 1997 album Karma, notable DJs such as Tiësto and Airscape produced remixes, which generated interest in clubs. It got promoted as an uptempo vocal trance song and as a result of increased airplay became an international hit three years later.
  • Asked during a Reddit AMA how the collaboration came about, McLachlan replied: "I wanted to challenge myself. It was a genre I didn't know much about, and I knew the boys from also living in Vancouver, and they asked me to be a part of it, so I thought it would be fun."
  • The song featured on the soundtrack for the 1999 movie Brokedown Palace starring Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale.
  • McLachlan performed this live with Delerium for the first time in January 2005, during the One World benefit concert in Vancouver for the 2004 Asian tsunami.

Trench town rock, give the slum a try
Trench town rock, never let the children cry
Trench town rock, cause you got to tell JAH, JAH

  • Trenchtown is a poor area in Kingston, Jamaica where Marley grew up. After a hurricane destroyed many of the homes there in 1951, a new settlement formed around a dump site. It was a difficult way of life, and Marley wrote this about how music was an escape from the poverty and desperation of Trenchtown.
  • Sublime covered this on their 1997 album Second Hand Smoke. Lead singer Bradley Nowell was a huge fan of Marley and referenced him in many of Sublime's songs. (thanks, Megan - Saratoga, NY, for above 2)

  • Down close their Down IV - Part Two EP with this epic track, which features what sounds like a ukulele passage by guitarist Pepper Keenan. Vocalist Phil Anselmo told Artist Direct about the recording of the song. "On the last day of tracking guitars, I said to Pepper, 'We need this part,'" he recalled. "It was a reminder because it was something we talked about plenty."

"Sure enough, he brought out this smaller guitar," he continued. "It wasn't really a ukulele [Laughs]. It was a miniature guitar, and I'm not even sure how many strings it had on it. Yes, right then and there on the spot, we gave him as much silence as we could because we were all in the room and pretty excited. We were laughing and talking in the background as he was telling us to 'Shut up, please!' He came up with that little part. It was recorded within an hour or so."

"While he was tracking that, I was generally getting the repeating hook over and over in my head," Anselmo added. "I tracked my part. Really, that whole piece came out automatically, organically, and fast. S--t, I think it took us two hours to do."
  • The Bacchanalia were Roman festivals in honor of the wine god Bacchus. They were characterized by drunkenness and licentiousness, hence 'Bacchanalian orgy' for any uninhibited drunken revelry.

    Isn't She Lovely
    Isn't she wonderful
    Isn't she precious
    Less than one minute old
I never thought through love we'd be
Making one as lovely as she
But isn't she lovely made from love
    Isn't she pretty
    Truly the angel's best
    Boy, I'm so happy
    We have been heaven blessed
I can't believe what God has done
Through us he's given life to one
But isn't she lovely made from love
    Isn't she lovely
Life and love are the same
    Life is Aisha
    The meaning of her name
Londie, it could have not been done
Without you who conceived the one
That's so very lovely made from love

  • Wonder wrote this to celebrate the birth of his daughter, Aisha. In 2005, Aisha (last name: Morris, which is Wonder's real name) sang a duet with her dad on his song "How Will I Know." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • The baby crying in the beginning is Aisha. Also, at the end of the song, Stevie says, "Come on, Aisha. Get out of the water, Baby," which is a memorable moment with Stevie and his daughter.

Wonder had Aisha with Yolanda Simmons, who he mentions near the end of the song: "Londi it could have not been done, without you who conceived the one." (thanks, Annabelle - Eugene, OR)
  • Wonder performed the harmonica part, which was mostly improvised. It came out sounding very good.
  • This appears in the 2003 Cuba Gooding Jr. film The Fighting Temptations. Other movies to use the song include Sea of Roses (1978) and Juwanna Mann (2002). TV series to use it include Designing Women, Doogie Howser, M.D., and Desperate Housewives.
  • Much of the album was recorded at The Hit Factory, a legendary recording studio in New York City where John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon also recorded. Wonder was the first client at The Hit Factory, which closed in 2005.
  • In 2015, Wonder was honored with the TV special Stevie Wonder: Songs in the Key of Life - An All-Star Grammy Salute. This was performed at the ceremony by Ne-Yo, who was joined midway through the song by Aisha Morris, surprising Wonder, who didn't expect to hear his daughter's voice.
  • American Idol finalist Clay Aiken performed this on the TV show Scrubs in the Episode "My Life in Four Cameras." (thanks, Logan - Troy, MT)
  • This was never released as a single by Stevie, despite Motown's requests, as he didn't want to edit down to a radio-friendly length.

    Don't Stop Lyrics

You're like perfection, some kind of holiday
You got me thinking that we could run away
You want I'll take you there,
You tell me when and where,
    Oh oh oh oh

But then I asked for your number,
Said you don't have a phone
    It's getting late now,
    I gotta let you know

That everybody wants to take you home tonight
But I'm gonna find a way to make you mine

Don't Stop doin' what you're doin'
Every time you move to the beat
    It gets harder for me
And you know it, know it, know it
And don't stop 'cause you know that I like it
Every time you walk in the room
You got all eyes on you
And you know it, know it, know it

You're coming close now, swear I can taste it,
You got me tongue tied, I can't escape it
    I'm loving what you got,
But then you push me off,
    Oh oh oh oh

And everybody wants to take you home tonight
But I'm gonna find a way to make you mine

Don't stop doin' what you're doin'
Every time you move to the beat
    It gets harder for me
And you know it, know it, know it
And don't stop 'cause you know that I like it
Every time you walk in the room
You got all eyes on you
And you know it, know it, know it

Every day it's the same, love and games that you play
Back and forth, round and round, kinda like it this way

Don't stop doin' what you're doin'
'Cause every time you move to the beat
    It gets harder for me
And you know it, know it, know it
And don't stop 'cause you know that I like it
Every time you walk in the room
You got all eyes on you
And you know it, know it, know it, know it

Don't stop (don't stop, stop what you're doing) doin' what you're doin'
('Cause you know that, you know that I like it)
Every time you move to the beat
    It gets harder for me
And you know it, know it, know it
And don't stop, 'cause you know that I like it (you know that I like it)

    City Of New Orleans Lyrics

Riding on the City Of New Orleans,
    Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
    All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

    [Chorus]
Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Dealin' cards with the old men in the club car.
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score.
Won't you pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.
And the sons of Pullman porters
    And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steam.
    Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they dream.

    [Chorus]

Nighttime on The City of New Orleans,
    Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee.
Half way home, we'll be there by morning
    Through the Mississippi darkness
    Rolling down to the sea.
And all the towns and people seem
To fade into a bad dream
And the steel rails still ain't heard the news.
The conductor sings his song again,
    The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.

Good night, America, how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

    City Of New Orleans
  • Arlo Guthrie is a prolific songwriter (and the son of maybe the more prolific songwriters), but he didn't write this one. "City Of New Orleans" was composed by the Chicago singer-songwriter Steve Goodman in 1970.

Goodman wrote the lyrics on a sketch pad after his wife fell asleep on the Illinois Central train, where they were going to visit his wife's grandmother. Goodman wrote about what he saw looking out the windows of the train and playing cards in the club car. Everything in the song actually happened on the ride.

After he returned home, Goodman heard that the train was scheduled to be decommissioned due to lack of passengers. He was encouraged to use this song to save the train, so he retouched the lyrics and released it on his first album in 1971.
  • Steve Goodman released his version as a single in 1972, but it was Arlo Guthrie's cover that same year that popularized the song and brought attention to rail lines that were vanishing across middle America. Many people who lived in rural areas relied on them to travel.
  • Steve Goodman died on September 20, 1984 at the age of 36 after a long battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. That same year, Willie Nelson covered this song and made it the title track of his album. Nelson's version was a #1 Country hit and won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song, which is a songwriting category and thus an honor bestowed posthumously to Goodman.

Nelson was one of many high-profile fans of Goodman, who released 11 albums in his lifetime. Diagnosed with leukemia in 1969, Goodman underwent chemotherapy and his cancer stayed in remission for 13 years thanks to an unpleasant regimen of drugs and treatment. When his cancer returned, Goodman continued performing and stayed in high spirits. This song, written after he was diagnosed, is a great example of his positive outlook, demonstrating a mindfulness and vitality of someone who appreciates the time he has left.
  • Arlo is the son of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie. This was Arlo's only chart hit, although he is well known for his Thanksgiving day classic, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree."
  • The jubilant chorus line, "Good morning America, how are ya?" became a cultural touchstone in the United States. When ABC launched a new morning show in 1975, they named it: Good Morning America.
  • Here's more info on the City of New Orleans train .
  • Guthrie and Goodman's versions have slightly different lyrics:

Goodman: "Passing towns that have no name."
    Guthrie: "Passing trains..."

Goodman: "Sons of Pullman porters and the sons of engineers ride their father's magic carpet made of steam."
    Guthrie: "... made of steel."

Goodman: "...the rhythm of the rails is all they dream"
    Guthrie: "...all they feel"
    (thanks, Victor - Portland, OR)
  • Goodman's version was recorded at Quadraphonic Sound Studios in Nashville, and produced by Kris Kristofferson and Norbert Putnam.
  • Goodman performed this song on the popular British variety show The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1972. Dolly Parton sang it in 1976 on her show Dolly, and the song has popped up in a few movies and TV shows, including B.J. and the Bear (1979), The A-Team (1985) and Texasville (1990 - Willie Nelson version.

    Anna Begins Lyrics

My friend assures me "it's all or nothing"
I am not worried, I am not overly concerned
My friend implores me: "For one time only make an exception"
    I am not not worried
Wrap her up in a package of lies send her off to a coconut island
I am not worried, I am not overly concerned
With the status of my emotions "Oh", She says, "You're changing."

    But we're always changing
It does not bother me to say this isn't love
Because if you don't want to talk about it then it isn't love
And I guess I'm going to have to live with that
But, I'm sure there's something in a shade of grey or something in between
And I can always change my name if that's what you mean

My friend assures me "It's all or nothing"
But I am not really worried, I am not overly concerned
You try to tell yourself the things you tell yourself to make yourself forget
    I am not worried
"If it's love", she said, "then were gonna have to think about the
    consequences"
She can't stop shaking and I can't stop touching her and.....

This time when kindness falls like rain
It washes her away and Anna Begins to change her mind
"These seconds when I'm shaking leave me shuddering for days" she says
And I'm not ready for this sort of thing

But I'm not gonna break and I'm not going to worry about it anymore
I'm not gonna bend and I'm not gonna break
I'm not gonna worry about it anymore
It seems like I should say "as long as this is love..."
But it's not all that easy so maybe I should just:
Snap her up in a butter fly net and just pin her down on a photograph album
I am not worried, I've done this sort of thing before
But then I start to think about the consequences
Because I don't get no sleep in a quiet room and...

The time when kindness falls like rain
It washes me away and Anna begins to change my mind
And every time she sneezes I believe it's it's love and
Oh lord.... I'm not ready for this sort of thing

    She's talking in her sleep
It's keeping me awake and Anna begins to toss and turn
And every word is nonsense but I understand and
Oh lord... I'm not ready for this sort of thing

    Her kindness bangs a gong
It's moving me along and Anna begins to fade away
    It's chasing me away
    She disappears and
Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing

    Anna Begins
  • Lead singer Adam Duritz wrote this song about denial. It's about when you're in a relationship with someone and you keep denying it's anything but a fling, then you wise up and realize that all along while you were denying it, you were growing closer together.
  • There is a real Anna - she's a girl from Australia that Duritz met on vacation in Greece in 1989, and she broke his heart. Duritz was far from famous at the time - he saved up money doing landscaping work to afford the trip. At the end of the trip, he and Anna agreed that there was no way for their relationship to continue, and they went their separate ways. "The characters keep saying 'I'm not ready for this sort of thing' until at the end when they find out what they really aren't ready for is the loss, but then it's too late," Duritz explained.

Adam says that they remained friends and occasionally spoke on the phone, even after Anna got married. She is a big fan of the song. (thanks, Beth - Charleston, SC, for above 2)
  • Duritz says that while Anna is real, the song is really about him, and in this context she is a character.
  • Adam Duritz often uses real - or slightly varied - names in the songs he writes. "Proper names matter to me, and so I use them," he said in our 2013 interview . "I think that comes across to other people, even if it's not the name they're thinking of. People ask me questions like that all the time, like, 'Who's Anna?' She's Anna. You don't know her. She's in Australia. But she's every girl you ever felt that way about, too."

    The last bird
    Smashed into a skyscraper
    Under the Hong Kong lights
    It fell pale
    Like a sink
    Landed on the night drain
    Fell a strong right
    While underground
    The tunnel reveal
    Voiceless land
    The harder to feel
For being born at the wrong place
    At the wrong time
    With a wrong fate

    Rockets fly out
    Razor
    Colour
    Sky now
Don’t forget icing on the sides
    Because you can
    Blinded by the rubberbands
    Blinded by the rubberbands
    Blinded by the love

    Cigar smoke stretchin’ over borders
    Creepin’ like a silent thief
    The bird stares
    Sleeping like an icon
    Make it fly
    Could rest in peace
    Intelligent
    So fly
    Can’t think out loud
    Cause now’s the time
    Don’t lose your job
    Stare in and smile
    Camera left

    Rockets fly out
    Razor
    Colour
    Sky now
Don’t forget icing on the sides

    Nabuma Rubberband
  • This is the title track of Little Dragon's fourth studio album. Vocalist Yukimi Nagono explained to The Sun why the record's name marries a common Ugandan girls' first name with an office supply item. "Nabuma is an African/Ugandian name and the name of a girl who do guys met a long time ago. She was a strong character. And I was singing the chorus to that song 'Blinded by the Rubberband.'"

"It became the working title and when we were working on our album artwork, we saw a painting by Chinese artist Li Wel, who took a picture of his daughter," she continued. "That with the name Nabuma Rubberband felt right."
  • Vocalist Yukimi Nagono told NME this song has, "a little bit of an end-of-the-world feeling, but it's still very sweet. I really like that feeling; it makes you want to close your eyes and groove to it but at the same time it's kind of dystopian."
  • Nagano explained to NME why they decided, at the drop of hat to get the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in to add some strings for the record. "We said on Tuesday, 'Let's have a string quartet,' and then on Friday they were here and we were arranging it all," she said. "It was pretty fun, having the time to be spontaneous with things."
  • Nagano told The Guardian about the songwriting for Nabuma Rubberband. "Certain songs you think about, you scratch your head and it takes time to finish them," she said. "With other songs, it's like, 'Pow! Pow! Pow!' There's something you need to get off your chest, and this album has a mix of those types of songs. It's more melancholic and reflective but I don't think it's depressing."

"As a band, we share values," Nagano added, "on things like the environment and Palestine – and some songs, like the title track and 'Pink Cloud,' reflect on those issues in some vague way."

    Outsider Lyrics

I'm an Outsider, outside of everything
I'm an outsider, outside of everything
I'm an outsider, outside of everything
    Everything you know
    Everything you know
    It disturbs me so

I'm an outsider, outside of everything
I'm an outsider, outside of everything
I'm an outsider, outside of everything
    Everything you know
    Everything you know
    It disturbs me so

Everybody tried to push me, push me around
Everybody tried to put me, tried to put me down

    All messed up, hey everyone
I've already had all my fun
    More troubles are gonna come
I've already had all my fun

    Oh yeah, yeah, yeah

Everybody tried to push me, push me around
Everybody tried to put me, tried to put me down

I'm an outsider, outside of everything
I'm an outsider, outside of everything
I'm an outsider, outside of everything
    Everything you know
    Everything you know
    It disturbs me so

    Outsider
  • Written by bass player Dee Dee Ramone, this song is about being on the fringes of society, a place the group inhabited. In 1983, while many rock bands were adding synthesizers and updating their images for MTV, the Ramones stayed true to form on their seventh album, Subterranean Jungle. This and the other tracks on the album didn't move the needle on the charts, but critics and core fans were delighted.
  • Green Day recorded this in 2002 for the movie The New Guy. Their version was included on The Ramones tribute album We're A Happy Family and on their compilation Shenanigans. In the movie, it was used in a scene where fans charge a stadium dressed like characters from Braveheart. (thanks, Rachel - Waurika, OK)

A Place With No Name Lyrics

As I drove across on the highway
    My jeep began to rock
I didn't know what to do so I stopped and got out
And looked down and noticed I got a flat

So I walked out, parked the car like sideways
So I can find what I can fix
I looked around there were no cars on the highway
I felt a strange feeling like a mist

I walked down towards the end of the road
And in the fog a woman appeared
She said don't you worry my friend I'll take care
Take my hand, I'll take you there

    Oh
Take me to a place without no name
Take me to a place without no name
Take me to a place without no name
Take me to a place without no name

As she took me right through the fog
I see a beautiful city appear
Where kids are playin' and people are laughin' and smiling and
    Nothing to fear fear

She said this is the place where no people have pain
    With love and happiness
She turned around looked down at my eyes and started cryin'
She grabbed my hand, you got a friend

    Oh
Take me to a place without no name
    Yeah

She started likin' me kissin' me and huggin' me
She didn't really, really want me to leave
She showed me places I've never seen things I've never done
This really looks like a lotta fun

I seen the grass and the sky and the birds
And the flowers surrounded by the trees
This place is filled with love and happiness
How in the world could I wanna leave

So then I went in my pocket took my wallet on out
With my pictures of my family and girl
This is the place that you choose to be with me
When you thought you could be in another world

    Oh
Take me to a place without no name
    La la la
    A place without no name
    La la la

A place without no name (La, la, la)

    A Place With No Name
  • This song was first conceived in 1998 by Elliot Straite, a New Jack Swing producer who goes by the name "Dr. Freeze." Straite knew Michael Jackson's manager at the time, John McClain, and was given an opportunity to work with the King of Pop. This was one of three songs they collaborated on. "I did all the music, and he only had to learn the lyrics," Straite said. "'A Place With No Name' is itself a kind of escape, a song where you just close your eyes to find yourself instantly transported into a wonderful world."
  • Three weeks after Michael Jackson's death on June 25, 2009, TMZ.com obtained a 24-second snippet of this previously unreleased song and put it onto the Internet. A full version was later reworked by the Norwegian production team Stargate, known for their hits with Ne-Yo, Rihanna and Katy Perry, for Jackson's second posthumous album Xscape.
  • Stargate's Mikkel Eriksen recalled to Billboard magazine that Jackson was a fan of their songs for Ne-Yo (they included his 2005 chart-topper "So Sick") and he met with them at the Midtown Manhattan Chinese restaurant Mr. K's to discuss future projects. "Just the two of us, and managers, and Blanket was there as well," he said. "Down in the basement."
  • The song's melody and lyrics resembles America's 1972 single "A Horse With No Name." Straite admitted the song was inspired by the seventies hit. "The lyrics of this song are very deep. I wanted to refresh it, make a version for the 2000s as well," he said. "The group America loved the idea. They found this 'update' absolutely terrific. They were really excited about this project."
  • This wasn't the only time a member of the Jackson family borrowed from the work of America. Janet Jackson's 2001 hit single "Someone To Call My Lover" sampled "Ventura Highway."
  • The song's music video was helmed by director Samuel Bayer (Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Blind Melon's "No Rain," Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around... Comes Around"). The clip mixes shots of a photogenic pair's dance routine and driving a Jeep through a desert with outtakes and behind-the-scenes footage Jackson originally filmed for his 1992 "In The Closet" mini-movie.

According to Jackson's official website, the clip closely adapts the song's narrative: "A man is enticed into a magical place by a mysterious woman. This Utopian world is one where no one is in fear and no people have pain."

The video premiered worldwide exclusively on the late icon's Twitter account on August 13, 2014, marking the first time the social media site has ever premiered a music clip.

    Don't Shed a Tear Lyrics

    Don't Shed a Tear
  • This was written by Eddie Schwartz, a guitarist, producer and songwriter who had written "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," which was a hit for Pat Benatar in 1980. Eddie was living in New York when he started writing this with another songwriter named Rob Friedman. They mapped out part of the verse and had some musical ideas, but forgot about it shortly thereafter. A little while later, Eddie joined a band with Lenny Zakatek, who was lead singer of The Alan Parsons Project. Along with Dave Tyson, they went to Toronto and worked on an album. Realizing they needed another song, Eddie played them some of this and they developed it in a jam session. Eddie came up with the guitar intro and they had a groove for it, but no lyrics except the idea for the title. As he did with "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," Eddie wrote the lyrics in the studio in about 15 minutes, which Lenny then sang. They put the song on a compilation that went out to record companies they hoped would sign the band. A few days later Tommy Mottola (an executive at Sony Records and future husband of Mariah Carey) called Eddie and told him he loved "Don't Shed a Tear" and wanted to sign the band. Soon after, Rob Friedman, who started writing this with Eddie, heard the song and was not pleased because he had been forgotten in the process. Eddie told us: "It was all inadvertent, but Rob was very upset about the whole thing. On top of that, he hated the lyrics. We got into a strange situation where Tommy Mottola was telling us it was a hit single and he wanted to sign the band, and we had the co-writer of the song telling us he hated it. Everybody calmed down, things worked themselves out and for reasons that were totally unmusical but had to do with negotiations between the manager and Tommy Mottola, we never ended up signing the deal and the band didn't stay together."
  • Sally Perryman, who worked for Schwartz' publishing company in England, brought this song to the attention of Paul Carrack's producer. They loved it and ended up cutting it. Rob Friedman felt much better about the song when he saw the kind of response it was getting.
  • This led Eddie to a gig producing The Doobie Brothers' 1989 reunion album Cycles. The Doobies loved the sound of this song and asked Eddie to work with them. (Check out our full interview with Eddie Schwartz.)
  • Carrack performed on several hit songs, but this was his first big single as a solo artist. In 1972, he wrote and sang on "How Long" as a member of the group Ace. He also sang "Tempted" by Squeeze and was a member of Mike + The Mechanics, where he sang on their hits "All I Need Is A Miracle" and "The Living Years." He had 2 more Top-40 hits on his own - "One Good Reason" and "I Live By The Groove," which was also written by Schwartz.
