Stillborn Lyrics

Blind me
Erase what was
Stillborn, I have become

The feelings I once felt are now dead and gone
I've waited here for you for so very long

So empty
Just a shell of a man
Stillborn, this I understand

The feelings I once felt are now dead and gone
I've waited here for you for so very long

I've waited here for you, so long

I've waited here for you, for you

The feelings I once felt are now dead and gone
I've waited here for you for so very long
I’ve waited here for you, so long
I’ve waited here for you, so long
I’ve waited here for you, so long
I’ve waited here for you, for you

Stillborn
  • Written by lead singer/guitarist Zakk Wylde, this song is about a man whose girlfriend treats him so poorly and takes such advantage of him that his love for her dies, and, indeed, he feels dead inside. Wylde insists that it's not autobiographical and that if any girl was treating him like that, he would simply break up with her and turn the tables.
  • Structurally, this is a very simple song, as Wylde believes that some of the best songs are ones you could play with one guitar string (low E). In our interview with Wylde , he explained: "You listen to something like 'Whole Lotta Love,' even 'Paranoid,' there's three parts to it. You have the opening riff, you have the verse, and you have that little section and then it gets back to the verse again. 'Stillborn' was just a matter of trying to write with as few chords as I possibly could."
  • The first single from The Blessed Hellride album, this song features background vocals by Ozzy Osbourne. Zakk Wylde was Ozzy's guitarist for his solo albums No Rest for the Wicked (1988) and No More Tears (1991). According to Wylde, immediately after recording the song, Ozzy asked how it turned out, then demanded a beer. Zakk's own vocals on the song came out sounding a lot like Osbourne's.

It was Wylde's wife, Barbaranne, who got Ozzy to sing on the track. Zakk didn't want to "mooch" off Ozzy, but Barbaranne was not deterred: she contacted Ozzy's wife/manager Sharon, and arranged the collaboration. Sharon thought it was a great idea, as it came at a time when she was happy to get Ozzy out of the house and doing some music again.
  • The video was directed by Rob Zombie, who came up with the concept while touring with Black Label Society on Ozzfest. Ozzy Osbourne did not appear in the clip. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)

  • The lead single from The Righteous & the Butterfly, this was the first Mushroomhead song featuring vocalist J-Mann since he left the band in 2004.

"That's got a real kind of 'circus vibe' to it," he said in our interview . "As far as the lyrics go, it's a commentary on the state of the country as far as the way Big Brother's clamping down. We've turned war into profit and false patriotism."
  • The song came about just after guitarist Church and bassist Dr. F first joined the band in February 2012. Dr. F told Loudwire : "Right around then, we were rehearsing for the annual 'old-school' show in Cleveland and our heads were full of nothing but Mushroomhead's early catalog. It just so happened that we were in the pre-production stages of writing for a new album as well."

"The influence of the early 'Shroom period is very evident in 'Qwerty' as it was inspired by songs like 'Simpleton,' 'Ego-Trip' and '43,' just to name a few," the bassist added.

"We wanted to fuse together the fun, dark keyboard driven sounds of the old-school with a raw, heavy modern twist," Dr F concluded. "We feel as though we've accomplished this and couldn't be more excited that it became the first single!"
  • Want some QWERTY history? In 1868 the journalist Christopher L Sholes of the Milwaukee News received a patent for an invention he called the "Type-Writer." However, the alphabetical layout of this first typewriter meant common letters in close proximity frequently jammed at high typing speeds. To minimise such clashing, Sholes conceived the four-rowed QWERTY layout, which remains on keyboards to this day.
  • Vocalist Jeffrey Nothing explained the song's meaning to AntiMusic : "I believe it is kind of saying: 'All for one, one for all." No matter what the rank, those whom actually fight the wars are very much the common man. Brothers in Arms if you will."

"Yet the reasons these conflicts are carried out in the first place, for the most part, come from a much higher place," Nothing continued. "The numbers lost due to any of these catastrophes can be staggering and yet Peace can seem a flat out myth."

For all of our conceived differences we are very much the same, with the same aspirations and dreams," he added. "In brutal reality, we can be called upon at anytime. Puppets and pawns, an endless supply, for sadistic schemes. War is and will always be, idiocy reigning supreme."

  • Rhett Miller sings here about the mystique of being a Rock Star and how it isn't all it's cut out to be. "Rock stars were once such mythical creatures, up there with presidents, playmates and preachers," he explained to to Here & Now's Robin Young. "The idea behind this song was to break all these rules that I've tried so hard to follow for all these years. I have wanted songs to be universal and not specific about me or my life or this weird job, and it just occurred to me this is the 20th anniversary of the first album of my band, and a lot of the people in the audience every night, when I look out, are literally younger than my career. And I just thought, if I'm ever going to address this as someone who's experienced it longer than most people get to, now seems like the time, because I still get to rock and I love to rock."

    Woman Lyrics

    Woman, I can hardly express
My mixed emotions and my thoughtlessness
After all, I'm forever in your debt
And woman, I will try to express my inner feelings and thankfulness
For showing me the meaning of success

Ooh, well, doo doo doo doo doo.
Ooh, well, well, doo doo doo doo doo

Woman, I know you understand the little child inside a man
Please remember, my life is in your hands, and woman
Hold me close to your heart, however distant don't keep us apart
After all it is written in the stars

    Ooh, well

    Woman, please let me explain
I never meant to cause you sorrow or pain
So let me tell you again and again and again
I love you, yeah, yeah, yeah, now and forever

    Woman
  • Lennon wrote this song as an ode to his wife Yoko Ono. He regarded it as the most Beatles-like track on his Double Fantasy album and he called it the '80s update of "Girl," which is a track on Rubber Soul. Speaking with Rolling Stone just days before his death, Lennon said: "'Woman' came about because, one sunny afternoon in Bermuda, it suddenly hit me what women do for us. Not just what my Yoko does for me, although I was thinking in those personal terms... but any truth is universal. What dawned on me was everything I was taking for granted. Women really are the other half of the sky, as I whisper at the beginning of the song. It's a 'we' or it ain't anything."
  • In many ways, this song is Lennon's apology to Yoko. In 1973, the couple was having problems in their marriage, so Yoko agreed to put their relationship on hold and let John sow his oats. He did, taking up with his assistant May Pang and engaging in some unruly behavior. Lennon referred to this time as his "Lost Weekend" - it lasted about 18 months.
  • This was released as a single in January 1981, about a month after Lennon was murdered.
  • In the UK, this replaced Lennon's "Imagine" at #1, which had been reissued following Lennon's death. This was the first time an artist replaced himself at UK #1 since The Beatles did it in 1963 with "She Loves You" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand."
  • This is the only song title for which Lennon and McCartney wrote separate songs. In 1966 McCartney wrote a song of the same title for Peter & Gordon, using the pseudonym Bernard Webb.

  • This is the title track and lead single of Ray LaMontagne's fifth studio album. The record was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys who helped dip the New Hampshire singer-songwriter 's folky sound into psychedelic waters. LaMontagne told American Songwriter magazine: "I always liked that psychedelic sound. I was always a fan of early Pink Floyd. I like the Kinks, the Troggs. I loved all that stuff. Captain Beefheart too. So I think this album is maybe tipped a little more in that direction in terms of influences."

"I just really allowed myself to write a different kind of song," he added. "I thought people might not like it, but that's never been a factor for me. I've been writing songs now for fifteen years and so I can trust my gut at this point."
  • Ray LaMontagne initially felt no pressure to swiftly produce a follow-up album to his 2010's Grammy winning set, God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise. However the right songs were eluding him, so in 2012 the songwriter decided to seek help. He wrote to his friend Elvis Costello for advice. LaMontagne told American Songwriter magazine: "He's always been a sort of mentor to me. Overall, I was just going through this weird stage. Nothing was sounding interesting to me. I'd think, I don't want to do that, or, I've done that already. It was like the well had run dry.

So I put my heart on my sleeve, and I told Elvis, 'God, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall.' And he said, 'There's only one way. You just have to trust that inner voice.' That was really helpful. So I just really allowed myself to write a different kind of song."

    Dark Lady Lyrics

The fortune queen of New Orleans,
Was brushing her cat in her black limousine
On the backseat were scratches from
The marks of men her fortune she had won
Couldn't see through the tinted glass,
She said "home James" and he hit the gas
I followed her to some darkened room,
She took my money, she said "I'll be with you soon"

Dark Lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one
Danced to her gypsy music till her brew was done
Dark lady played back magic till the clock struck on the twelve
She told me more about me than I knew myself

She dealt two cards, a queen and a three
And mumbled some words that were so strange to me
Then she turned up a two-eyed jack,
My eyes saw red but the card still stayed black
She said the man you love is secretly true
To someone else who is very close to you
My advice is that you leave this place,
Never come back and forget you ever saw my face

Dark lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one
Danced to her gypsy music till her brew was done
Dark lady played back magic till the clock struck on the twelve
She told me more about me than I knew myself

So I ran home and crawled in my bed,
I couldn't sleep because of all the things she said
Then I remembered her strange perfume,
And how I smelled it was in my own room!
So I sneaked back and caught her with my man,
Laughing and kissing till they saw the gun in my hand
The next thing I knew they were dead on the floor,
Dark lady would never turn a card up anymore

Dark lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one
Danced to her gypsy music till her brew was done
Dark lady played back magic till the clock struck on the twelve
She told me more about me than I knew myself

    Dark Lady
  • This was written by The Ventures keyboard player Johnny Durrill.
  • This is about a woman who visits a famous fortune teller. The fortune teller (the "dark lady") tells her to break up with her boyfriend. Later on, the shocked protagonist remembers where she smelt the fortune teller's perfume before: on her bed after a night with her lover. She returns to the dark lady with a gun and finds her beau making love to the fortune teller. In a split decision, she pulls the trigger and kills the dark lady.
  • Johnny Durrill: "I spent a week in his (Snuff Garrett, Cher's producers) office playing him songs, one of which Cher recorded. Later, when I was on tour in Japan with the Ventures, I was writing an interesting song. I telegraphed the unfinished lyrics to Garrett. He said to 'make sure the bitch kills him.' Hence, in the song both the lover and fortune teller were killed. That song became 'Dark Lady' which Cher cut; it went to number one in 1974. Garrett provided me access to artists such as Cher and Sinatra and other opportunities such as soundtracks." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for above 2)

I want to be a Platinum Blonde
Just like all the sexy stars
Marilyn and Jeane, Jayne, Mae and Marlene
Yeah they, they really had fun

    In a luminous day-glo shade
Walk into a bar and I'll have it made
'Cause if that's all it takes; a double processed blonde

I want to be a platinum blonde
I want to be a platinum blonde
    Be a platinum blonde

Yeah I even tried wearing a wig for a while
It was the right colour, but not the right style
Gonna get some peroxide at the beauty supply
    See ya later

I want to be a platinum blonde
Just like all the sexy stars
Marilyn and Jeane, Jayne, Mae and Marlene
Yeah they, they really had fun

Now if you need me on Sunday and you look twice and see
That platinum blonde is gonna be me
In a double processed luminous day-glo shade
When I get this colour I'll have it made in the shade

    Oh, I hope I'm OK
I want to be a platinum blonde
I want to be a platinum blonde

    Honey, I gotta, I gotta, I gotta, I gotta
I gotta be a platinum blonde

  • This was one of five tracks from a 1975 demo recorded by Blondie. It was produced by Alan Betrock, the founder of New York Rocker, one of the primary organs of the American Punk scene. The song was first issued on the 1994 compilation The Platinum Collection.
  • The song was the first ever one that Debbie Harry wrote for Blondie, and it served as a mission statement. She told Mojo magazine: "I think as far as Blondie is concerned, I took reference from the silver screen. Blonde goddesses. All of them. Not just Marilyn, but Jean Harlow and Lana Turner and even Diana Dors and Jayne Mansfield. I think it was a conceived idea from Hollywood that registered in my brain as being something that would work in a band situation."

    Thrasher Lyrics

    Thrasher
  • Throughout the song, references to geological formations and farming are repeated. The song could be interpreted to be about death or the decline of rock 'n' roll, but Neil says, "Thrasher was pretty much me writing about my experiences with Crosby, Stills & Nash in the mid '70s"
  • The great Canyon rescue episode probably refers to an episode of one of the mid '50s Westerns. Neil has said he enjoys sci-fi films and old Westerns.
  • This could reflect Neil's personal philosophy about life and music, and his emphasis on being true to his own heart and soul. In a 2003 Rolling Stone article, Neil said: "That's what I know how to do (make albums) and I do that OK. Sometimes I do it and people really like it. Sometimes I do it and they get pissed off at me (smiles). Whatever." (thanks, Amy - Chicago, IL, for all above with help from Thrasher's Wheat website)
  • The album was recorded mostly live at San Francisco's Cow Palace, accompanied by Neil's perennial backing band, Crazy Horse. "Rust Never Sleep" references Neil's ongoing attempts at musical self-renewal so as to avoid becoming irrelevant, restless experimentation a hallmark quality of his music that has become almost synonymous with his name over the years.
  • The" dinosaurs" referred to in the song refer CSNY - something long dead and forgotten. More explicitly, the line goes on to state: "So I got bored and left them there, they were just dead weight to me. It's better on the road without that load."

    Boom Clap
  • This song features on the soundtrack of the romantic comedy-drama movie The Fault in Our Stars. "The scene that ['Boom Clap'] is in is an uplifting moment in the film," XCX explained to Billboard magazine. "And while the song itself is very euphoric and enthusiastic about romance… it's about wanting to fall in love, but there's this hint of sadness in that, which I like."
  • Charli and Patrick Berger wrote this song in Stockholm. She explained the inspiration to Entertainment Weekly: "We had been listening to loads of French yé-yé pop and the Flying Lizards and Bow Wow Wow, and we were saying how all those songs have dumb, hooky, shouty choruses. They're all sort of childlike. So we wanted to make a song like that.
  • The song celebrates epic love. "Being totally immersed in passion and feeling really safe and really alone with that person," Charli explained to MTV UK. "Although I always hear a tinge of sadness in it, that song has quite an acute feeling."
  • The Sing J. Lee-directed video features Charli XCX traipsing through the Amsterdam city. The singer explores the same spots that were featured in The Fault in Our Stars movie.
  • Charli XCX wrote the song during the sessions that produced the tracks for her debut album True Romance. She penned the tune with Patrick Berger, her collaborator on "I Love It." It didn't make the final cut and was then offered to Hilary Duff to record.

XCX told MTV UK that Berger has worked with Hilary Duff before, and when the singer's people got in touch with them about her new record, she got very excited. "My number one project as a songwriter is to write for Hilary Duff, so when I heard about this, I was like, 'f---k! Are you serious?! This is my 'in!,'" she recalled. "I'm going to make a Hilary Duff album!' So we sent over 'Boom Clap', but they came back and were like, 'this isn't cool enough for Hilary."

"I was like, crushed," Charli added, sighing. "I thought I was a cool writer, but maybe I'm not. Hilary didn't want my song. What a life-ruiner."

Once Duff declined the offer, XCX decided to use the song as her contribution for The Fault in Our Stars.
  • If you think this song has a dumb chorus, you're right - at least according to Charli. She says that it is dumb, but some of the best pop songs have one-line, catchy choruses.
  • Charli XCX recorded a version of both this song and "Break The Rules" in Japanese to promote the Japanese release of Sucker. "Boom Clap's" onomatopoeic title stayed the same, but the English words elsewhere were translated. "I did it phonetically," Charli recalled to Digital Spy . "I don't actually remember it now; it was more just me repeating the sounds. But I'm very happy with it, I've always been inspired by Japan constantly, so I kind of wanted to do something for the Japanese fans."

    Genghis Khan Lyrics

    Genghis Khan
  • This is an instrumental song that expresses musically the fear, terror, apprehension, and feeling of being overwhelmed. It also "describes" the army's military power. Genghis Khan was a warrior who led the Mongolian empire.
  • Iron Maiden bass player Steve Harris, who wrote this song, explained: "This was another song where there could have been a vocal melody on top, but it felt good as an instrumental. A vocal would have cluttered it up. Originally it was written to depict the feeling and sound of Genghis Khan's army going into battle. It felt better not to have any guitar solos on this track."
  • This was released as the B-side to the single for "Purgatory." It is the lowest charting Maiden single to date, and only went as far as #52 in the UK charts.
  • The 1998 album A Call to Irons: A Tribute to Iron Maiden featured a cover of this by Angel Corpse.
  • This is one of four instrumental Iron Maiden songs the band has released. The others are "The Ides of March" (also Maiden's shortest song, at one minute and forty-four seconds), "Transylvania" (which was originally meant to have lyrics, but ultimately the band determined it sounded best as just instrumental) and "Losfer Words (Big 'Orra)" (the title is "Loss for words- big horror!" as pronounced in a Cockney accent). (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for all above)
  • In 1990 Iron Maiden released a series of CDs called The First Ten Years which contained commentary from their drummer Nicko McBrain in features called "Listen With Nicko." On one of these discs, Nicko said that this song was originally called "Jenkin's Barn." (thanks, Mike - Cumbria, England)
  • Papa Roach "borrowed" the guitar riff from this song in their hit "Last Resort."

    Lying in a bedroom
    Lighting up a Benson
    Face hair is growing
So I cut with a vengeance
    Hey, did I mention
    As she makes an entrance
    Said I had a tendency
    To finish off a sentence

Oh well, she's a local girl
    No make-up
    Cos she knows me well
Hair tied up in elastic band
With a kiss on the cheek
    For her One-night man

    Is it fast food
    I'll regret it after
    And I needed money
But I'm too shy to ask her
So she buys me chips and cheese
And I tell her I love her
    And she's all I need
I take it with a cold glass
Of the fruit and the barley
She's still a sucker for the
    Apple and Bacardi
    Heading to the party
    Sitting in the car seat
    B.E.P. on radio
    It makes me feel naughty

    She knows me well
    Bit of a catch
    To have a local girl
Hair tied up in elastic band
With a kiss on the cheek
    For her one-night man
    I don't wanna go alone
    I don't wanna go alone
    I don't wanna go alone

Tell her that I love her
Tell her that I need her
    Tell her that she's more
    Than a one-night stand
Tell her that she turns my cheeks
    The colour of my hair
All I wanna do is be near

Tell her that I want her
Tell her that I need her
Tell her that she's more than a one-night stand
Tell her that I love her
    More than anyone else
If you don't, then I'll tell her myself

And we've got love in us
So if the drink kill us
    We're gonna dance all night
    Till the floor fillers
    If we talk outside
I say I hate wasps too
    I don't really dance
    So I'll just watch you
Are you taking me back tonight?
    Tell me if that's alright
    I don't wanna be here
    I'm not the sofa type
Tell me if you have a toothbrush
    You don't mind sharing
She said I wanna take off
    What you're wearing
    I don't wanna go alone
    I don't wanna go alone
    I don't wanna go alone

Tell her that I love her
Tell her that I need her
    Tell her that she's more
    Than a one-night stand
Tell her that she turns my cheeks
    The colour of my hair
All I wanna do is be near
Tell her that I want her
Tell her that I need her
    Tell her that she's more
    Than a one-night stand
Tell her that I love her
    More than anyone else
If you don't, I'll tell her myself

    She's like the fast food
    I'll regret it after
    And I needed money
But I'm too shy to ask her
But she buys me chips and cheese
So I tell her that she's all I need

    Tell her that she's more
    Than a one-night stand
Tell her that she turns my cheeks
    The colour of my hair
All I wanna do is be near
    Tell her that she's more
    Than a one-night stand
Tell her that I love her
    More than anyone else
If you don't, I'll tell her myself

Tell her that I love her
Tell her that I need her
    That she's more
    Than a one-night stand
Tell her that she turns my cheeks
    The colour of my hair
All I wanna do is be near
Tell her that I want her
Tell her that I need her
    Tell her that she's more
    Than a one-night stand
Tell her that I love her
    More than anyone else
If you don't, I'll tell her myself

  • Sheeran started writing for his sophomore album x in 2011, before the release of +. This minimalistic tune was the first song he came up with. He initially released an acoustic version on May 2, 2014 on his YouTube channel.
  • Sheeran wrote this for Alice, who was his girlfriend for several years when they were teenagers. She is the subject of many of the tracks on + and the pair eventually broke up amicably. This was the last song Sheeran wrote for her and it finds the singer saying to his former muse that despite the ending of their romantic relationship he hopes they'll still remain friends.
  • Sheeran wrote this in his dressing room on a guitar made out of a whiskey barrel whilst on tour in Perth, Australia in 2011.

    It's A Sin Lyrics

When I look back upon my life
It's always with a sense of shame
I've always been the one to blame
At school they taught me how be be
So pure in thought and word and deed
    They didn't quite succeed.
For everything I long to do
No matter when or where or who
Has one thing in common too
    It's a, it's a, it's a, It's A Sin
    It's a sin
    Everything I've ever done
    Everything I ever do
    Ever place I've ever been
    Every where I'm going to
    It's a sin

So I look back upon my life
Forever with a sense of shame
I've always been the one to blame
For everything I long to do
No matter when or where or who
Has one thing in common too
    It's a, it's a, it's a, it's a sin
    It's a sin
    Everything I've ever done
    Everything I ever do
    Ever place I've ever been
    Every where I'm going to
    It's a sin

    Father forgive me
I tried not to do it
    Turned over a new leaf
    Then tore right through it
    What ever you taught me
    I didn't believe it
    Father you fought me
    'Cause I didn't care
    and I still don't understand

For everything I long to do
No matter when or where or who
Has one thing in common too
    It's a, it's a, it's a, it's a sin
    It's a sin
    Everything I've ever done
    Everything I ever do
    Ever place I've ever been
    Every where I'm going to
    It's a sin It's a sin
    It's a, it's a, it's a It's a sin

    It's A Sin
  • Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant was raised Catholic and the lyrics reflect his unfavorable view of the church. This caused a lot of controversy, but got the group plenty of attention and helped make the song a huge hit in the UK.
  • The ending stanza is sung in Latin and loosely translated it reads: "Father my father, please forgive me for I have sinned, it is my fault, it is my fault." (thanks, Nathaniel - Newark, NY, for above 2)
  • Tennant wrote the lyrics to get back at some of his teachers at his former school, St. Cuthberts. The teachers said some harsh things about him when the song was released. (thanks, Paul - Potters Bar, England)
  • Julian Mendelsohn reunited with Pet Shop Boys to produce and engineer most of the songs for the album after doing the same for the track "Suburbia" on the duo's debut album two years before. In a Sound on Sound interview, Mendelsohn explained his job on the Actually album:

"My role as a producer on that album was just getting it all recorded. I also made a few suggestions here and there - you know, 'We can get a better sound for this' or 'Try singing that part again.' In those days, Neil wasn't a great singer and he knew it. So, there was always a bit of work involved in getting his vocals right. He's improved a hell of a lot since then."
  • In a bid to keep himself focused and the songs fresh, Mendelsohn tried not to labor over any individual track too much, with the exception of "It's a Sin." He explained: "I remember describing a sound or a feel that I was after and sy[synthesizer/keyboard programmer] Andy Richards not quite understanding what I wanted. We were still there at midnight and he was saying, 'Well, what do you want?' My answer was, 'I want it like this, but I can't quite explain,' and there were a couple of times when we got fairly angry and frustrated with each other. I had this thing in my mind: 'I want it like that and I'm going to get it like that.'"
  • The thunder sound was created on a Roland keyboard.
  • The Pet Shop boys won a lawsuit against TV presenter Jonathan King after he accused them of stealing the melody from Cat Stevens' 1971 song "Wild World." King even recorded his own cover of that track to prove his point, but it flopped. The duo donated their out-of-court damages to charity.
