Sanctuary Lyrics

Out of the winter came a war horse of steel
I've never killed a woman before, but I know how it feels
I know you'd have gone insane if you saw what I saw
So now I've got to look for Sanctuary from the law

I met up with a stranger last night to keep me alive
He spends all his money on gambling and guns to survive
I know you'd gone insane if you saw what I saw
So now I've got to look for Sanctuary from the law

So give me sanctuary from the law and I'll be alright
Just give me sanctuary from the law and love me tonight, tonight
I know you'd have gone insane if you saw what I saw
So now I've got to look for sanctuary from the law
So give me sanctuary from the law and I'll be alright
Just give me sanctuary from the law and love me tonight, tonight

I can laugh at the wind, I can howl at the rain.
Down in the canyon or out in the plain.

I know you'd have gone insane if you saw what I saw
So now I've got to look for sanctuary from the law

So give me sanctuary from the law and I'll be alright
Just give me sanctuary from the law and love me tonight, tonight

Sanctuary
  • About a fugitive who needs "Sanctuary from the law." This is also the theme of Maiden songs like "Running Free," "Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Fugitive" and "Innocent Exile."
  • The only song from Iron Maiden's debut album released as a single.
  • First appeared on a 1979 compilation album called Metal for Muthas along with another Maiden song, "Wrathchild."
  • The single was a far better quality version of the song than that included on the album. It was the band's second single after "Running Free." The cover art of "Running Free" introduced the shock-haired, skeletal zombie known as Eddie, and the cover art for this song depicted him killing Margaret Thatcher, who was known as the "Iron Maiden." On the cover, she had been tearing down an "Iron Maiden- Live" poster off a wall before Eddie drew his knife and did the deed. The cover art for the single was actually the first installation of a story which was continued in the cover art of the next two singles. On the cover for "Women in Uniform," Margaret Thatcher is alive again, dressed as a soldier and carrying a gun. She has torn down another Iron Maiden poster and is waiting for Eddie, who is just around the corner with two young girls. On the cover art for "Twilight Zone," Eddie is a ghost attacking a girl in her bedroom.
  • Most of the singles had a black bar over the face of Margaret Thatcher as a response to controversy over it. According to Derek Riggs, who designed the cover, "the 'flak'... was invented by the band's management. They 'banned' it and they put the black square over her face and then they showed it to the press and cried 'censorship,' but there really wasn't any. The flak was all imaginary and self-generated for publicity. It's an old trick and it nearly always sells records... go and ask all the rappers who swear on their records all the time, if it depressed the record sales they would soon stop doing it." He also claims that the cover art was inspired by the lyric "Never killed a woman but I know how it feels," and remarks dryly, "Lovely state of mind..."
  • This was kept off the UK/European version of Iron Maiden until it was re-released in 1998.
  • Contained a startlingly realistic sound effect of a police siren, which appeared midway through the song. It was missing from Metal for Muthas.
  • Dennis Stratton (then the band's guitarist) performed a slightly different solo on the Iron Maiden version of this song than on the Metal for Muthas one.
  • There is an Iron Maiden tribute band from New York City called Sanctuary. Their logo uses the same font ("Metal Lord") as Maiden, and perform many songs from the Bruce Dickinson ("golden") era.
  • This was covered by Abattoir and included on the album Call to Irons II. The album is a tribute to Iron Maiden.
  • "Sanctuary" is also the name of a Madonna song. The band hates Madonna. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for all above)

    Young Man's Game Lyrics

I'm not as good as I used to be
at the late nights, but just look at me
I'm staking a claim in a Young Man's Game tonight

Is it something that my old heart fears?
    Missed time, chances, lost years
That means I'm taking aim at a young man's game tonight

One more chance to leave a mark
Imagining the answers in the dark
Such a simple step into the smoke and the light tonight

But who'd have thought I'd have turned this page?
Should I act this out or act my age?
Am I happy I came to the young man's game,
Where the bouncers know me by my name, tonight?

Oh I could I work this room
    I could make some noise
Let's hear it for the girls and for the boys
For a moment be the same in the young man's game tonight

We're drinking Jaeger bombs but we're still on our feet
    Heroes in a wild conceit
Fingering fame in the young man's game tonight

But every mirror just tells the time
Can you name a good fighter over 49?
I should douse my flame for the young man's game tonight

    Take off this paper crown
    And put these violins down
And renounce my claim on the young man's game tonight

  • Ben Watt, who is the male half of Everything But the Girl, has been an established presence on London's Deep House circuit as a DJ since 1998. This song finds him coming reluctantly to terms with the fact that, at 51, he's become a bit too long in the tooth to spin club tunes all night long. He explained to The Hollywood Reporter : "The dance floor never seems to age, but you do. It's never difficult to party one last time, it's the recovery that's hard."

"At times, I was playing three different countries over one weekend and I didn't want to fake it anymore," he continued. "It was a more honorable, graceful thing to withdraw. Even if I thought I had something left to offer musically, I couldn't give of myself completely because I wasn't enjoying the experience as much as I used to."

"Ironically, when I played the song to (producer) Ewan (Pearson), he's 10 years younger than me and he recognized himself in it," Watt added. "If he's feeling that way, imagine how I feel."

  • The Hotel Yorba is a real hotel. It is located in a run-down section of Detroit on Lafayette Boulevard, near a bus station. Jack White grew up in Detroit and heard rumors about the hotel when he was growing up.
  • This was the first UK hit for the White Stripes. Even though they were from America, it they were embraced in England first. At the time, Jack and Meg White, who make up the group, were telling people they were brother and sister. After a while, it was learned that they are not related and were married for a while.

  • According to Jack White, one day he went to visit Meg White who showed him a drum beat that she had made up that morning. Jack wrote a song around the beat, and the song became "Hotel Yorba." (thanks, Amanda - Los Angeles, CA)

Jealous (I Ain't With It) Lyrics

I got strung up from our loving
I wish you cared to see
But she only cares when she's got the time
And I fret so much about our loving
I wish she'd let me be
But our destinies got us intertwined

And is it really my fault
I get a shiver when I see you with those other guys
    Wearing the jacket I bought
I can't help but lose my temper and I don't know why

I get jealous, but I'm too cool to admit it
When the fellas, talk to my girl I ain't with it
I get jealous, but I'm too cool to admit it
When the fellas, talk to my girl I ain't with it
    I ain't with it, I ain't with it, I ain't with it
    I ain't with it, I ain't with it, I ain't with it
    I ain't with it, I ain't with it, I ain't with it
    I ain't with it, I ain't with it, I ain't with it

What is she thinking, too much uncertainty
Why can't she give some sort of sign
You know and I know, a thing or two about loyalty
Ooh but that girl don't pay no mind

So is it really my fault
I get a shiver when I see you with those other guys
    Wearing the jacket I bought
I can't help but lose my temper and I don't know why

I get jealous, but I'm too cool to admit it
When the fellas, talk to my girl I ain't with it
I get jealous, but I'm too cool to admit it
When the fellas, talk to my girl I ain't with it
    I ain't with it, I ain't with it, I ain't with it
    I ain't with it, I ain't with it, I ain't with it
    I ain't with it, I ain't with it, I ain't with it
I ain't with it, I ain't with it, tu tu tu

I get strung up from her loving
I wish she cared to see
But she only cares when she so inclined
And I fret so much about her loving
I wish she'd let me be
But her destiny got us so intertwined
    Back in 2011, I decided
To not let this play with my mind
But when the boys from out of town
    They come back around
I feel like committing a crime, yeah

I get jealous, but I'm too cool to admit it
When the fellas, talk to my girl I ain't with it
I get jealous, but I'm too cool to admit it
When the fellas, talk to my girl I ain't with it
I get jealous, (ooh ooh ooh) but I'm too cool to admit it
When the fellas, (ooh ooh ooh) talk to my girl I ain't with it

    Jealous (I Ain't With It)
  • Chromeo is a Canadian Electrofunk duo formed in 2004 in Montreal by vocalist David "Dave 1" Macklovitch and keyboardist Patrick "P-Thugg" Gemayel. This song finds Dave 1 singing:

I get a shiver when I see you with those other guys
    Wearing the jacket I bought
I can't help but lose my temper and I don't know why

"There's no other ode to the castrated male on the radio today," Dave said to Radio.com of the song. "In that sense our music means something in the context of other songs that are like, 'I know you want it, I know you want it.' How about a song where it's like, 'Man, I'm so jealous, but I can't even say it.'"
  • Speaking on AMP Radio's 97.1 Seconds With series, Chromeo admitted that they expected a backlash after hearing this song on the radio, but it proved to be the contrary. "We took almost ten years to build a solid underground foundation," they said. "We did everything, all the credible steps that a band could take. Putting out vinyl, getting remixes, working with the right people. And basically showing that this is going to come when its right. But we're not chasing a hit."

"When our fans hear us on the radio, or new people hear us on the radio and learn about us, it's like the underdog made it," Chromeo continued. "So everybody is actually really proud and supportive. And they feel like its a victory for them as well."

"Instead of feeling betrayed by their band. They're like "HA HA! I've loved Chromeo for 10 years, and I was right!" We didn't change the music to get there," they concluded. "That's the crucial part. 'Jealous' is the most Chromeo song ever!"
  • Chromeo made their third appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on April 22, 2014 when they performed this song and "Come Alive."
  • Dave 1's younger brother is DJ and producer A-Trak, who is best known as one half of Duck Sauce, who had an international hit single in 2010 with "Barbra Streisand."
  • The song is from Chromeo's fourth studio album, White Women. The pair chose the title for the record as it's the name of photographer Helmut Newton's first book. Dave 1 explained to HMV.com : "As you know, he's always been a big influence on us, visually, with the legs and all, our album artwork and such."

"I was at his retrospective in Paris a couple of years ago and they had the titles of all his publications on the wall," he continued. "White Women struck me. I called P and said: 'wouldn't that make a great title for a Bowie album? Or a Roxy Music album?…Why don't we use it?' After a bit of deliberation, we went with it. We knew it'd come as a bit of a shock, but we like it. It sparks conversation."

    Iron Maiden
  • This became the band's trademark song and a concert favorite. They would typically close out their sets with it before returning for an encore.
  • The original demo of this song appeared on the raw tapes played at the Soundhouse, a metal club in London, when the band was just starting out. The demo was eventually released as an EP called The Soundhouse Tapes, but the song was re-recorded for their debut album.
  • The song is about the medieval torture device of the same name. It was a specifically shaped iron coffin that resembled a sarcophagus. The door was imbedded with long spikes. It was held vertically so the victim could be placed inside, and the door slammed shut under its own massive weight. The victim was skewered, as well as crushed. Steve Harris, who started the band, first saw the Maiden in an old film adaptation of The Man In The Iron Mask.
  • Maiden mainstay Steve Harris said of this song: "It's quite simple. The bass line is fairly straight forward as is the drumming. But the guitar is over the top with harmony, and the bass is descending behind it. I think this makes it pretty special."
  • Will Malone was the producer for the album, although the production was done primarily by the band and the recording engineer.
  • Derek Riggs designed the cover art, which depicted a shock-haired, skeletal zombie in an alley. When the album was re-mastered in 1998, a slightly edited version of the cover was used. It was darker, both colour-wise (it looked shadier) and emotionally (the zombie looked far less cartoonish and more horrific). Riggs slipped his logo- the symbol which features a reflected D and a right-hand R (his initials)- into the cover art. It appears on the second brick from the left, six rows down, on the shadier half of the wall. Also, a wastebasket on a street lamp by the wall reappeared on the cover art for Somewhere in Time, next to Eddie's left leg.
  • Only one song from the album was released as a single, "Sanctuary," and it was exclusively in the UK. Paul Di'Anno , who was the vocalist at the time of this album's release, was far less popular than Bruce Dickinson, whose air-raid siren voice was far more well received that Di'Anno's grittier singing. (Ironically, Bruce tried a grittier style in albums like No Prayer for the Dying).
  • The album was recorded in December 1979, and released on April 11, 1980. "Iron Maiden" was the last track.
  • The guitar riff was a heavy influence on their later, and far more successful song, "Aces High."
  • Steve Harris thought "Iron Maiden" could also be a description of a cold-blooded woman (Indeed, Margaret Thatcher's nickname was "Iron Maiden," she appeared on some single covers). The song describes such a damsel, who seduces men into her bedroom to show off her "wares" (torture devices) and proceeds to kill them in an Iron Maiden.
  • There is an all-female Los Angeles tribute band called the Iron Maidens, who have actually met the band and have a female Eddie as their mascot. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for all above)
  • The Heavy Metal band Trivium covered this in 2008. It was included as a bonus track on their Shogun album. (thanks, Nick - Cairns, Australia)

    Lord Of The Flies Lyrics

I don't care for this world anymore
I just want to live my own fantasy
Fate has brought us to these shores
What was meant to be is now happening

I've found that I like this living in danger
Living on edge it makes feel as one
Who cares now what's right or wrong,
    It's reality
    Killing so we survive
    Wherever we may roam
    Wherever we may hide
    We've got to get away

I don't want existence to end
We must prepare ourselves for the elements
I just want to feel like we're strong
We don't need a code of morality

I like all the mixed emotion and anger
It brings out the animal the power you can feel
And feeling so high on this much adrenalin
Excited but scary to believe what we've become

    Saints and sinners
    Something within us
    We are lord of flies

    Saints and sinners
    Something willing us
To be Lord Of The Flies

    Lord Of The Flies
  • This was inspired by the novel Lord Of The Flies by William Golding, which was made into two movies: one in 1963 and one in 1990 (neither were great critical successes). It's about a group of boys who are shipwrecked and begin embracing their primal side. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • Lord Of The Flies is the literal translation of the Greek word Beezelbub. In the Bible, Beezelbub is the name given for Satan by Jesus (this occurs in the episode where he casts demons out of a crazy man and into a pig. There's also a line in there from which Lincoln derived his phrase about the Civil War- a house divided upon itself can not stand). While most songs dealing with Golding's novel deal with the more good guy characters in the novel - Ralph and Piggy, or with the kinda psychic kid (Simon) who actually talks to the beast, this song is unique in that it's told from the point of view of the most savage boys - Jack and his crew. It's kind of like The Rolling Stones' Sympathy For The Devil in that it's a sort of exoneration for evil behavior, and cautions that everyone is called to be evil. (thanks, Jackie - Dallas, TX)
  • This is the most guitar-driven song on the album.
  • The artwork on the single depicted Iron Maiden's mascot Eddie as literally a lord of the flies. He sits, dressed as a monarch, on an electric chair (serving as a throne) with a swarm of flies around him.
  • The two songs on the B-side were a cover of the Who's "My Generation" and a cover of UFO's "Doctor, Doctor." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for above 3)

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son Lyrics

Here they stand brothers them all
All the sons divided they'd fall
Here await the birth of the son
The seventh, the heavenly, the chosen one

Here the birth from an unbroken line
Born the healer the seventh, his time
Unknowingly blessed and as his life unfolds
Slowly unveiling the power he holds

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Seventh son of a seventh son
Seventh son of a seventh son

Then they watch the progress he makes
The Good and the Evil which path will he take
Both of them trying to manipulate
The use of his powers before it's too late

Seventh son of a seventh son
Seventh son of a seventh son
Seventh son of a seventh son

Today is born the seventh one
Born of woman the seventh son
And he in turn of a seventh son
He has the power to heal
He has the gift of the second sight
    He is the chosen one
    So it shall be written

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
  • Running This runs 9:53, this song was inspired by a series of science fiction novels by Orson Scott Card. They are about Alvin Maker, the seventh son of a seventh son (the first book in the series is called Seventh Son), who is born with second sight and the ability to use "folk magic" in an alternate reality. The song describes how his birth was eagerly anticipated by his siblings and how the forces of good and evil struggled over him.
  • The album was a "concept album" and dealt with the life of the "seventh son." For instance, "The Clairvoyant" is about him coming to terms with his powers and learning to control them, "The Prophecy" is about him trying to get people to believe him and "Moonchild" is about "the Unmaker of all things" trying to prevent his birth. Four songs from the album became Top 10 singles in the UK.
  • Derek Riggs, who designed the cover art for most Iron Maiden albums, depicted a skeletal upper torso hovering over water in an arctic region with UFO-like objects in the sky. He also displayed his trademark in the water, a unique symbol which depicts his initials with a mirrored D and an R on the right hand side. It is hidden in a subtle place on most of the albums, usually near Maiden's mascot, Eddie.
  • Seven is the Hebrew and Biblical number of perfection. In ancient legend, the seventh son of a seventh son will have extraordinary powers, including magical healing skills.
  • This was the band's seventh studio album. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for all above)
  • According to the mythology about the "seventh son of a seventh son," Septamus is supposed to be the Christian name of such a child. When Kerrang! magazine gave lead singer Bruce Dickinson a quiz that included the question "Which Christian name are you traditionally supposed to give to a seventh son of a seventh son?" his answer was "Steve." He ultimately scored 16 out of 25, although Kerrang! gave him "A slap on the wrist for not knowing the 'seventh son of a seventh son' one!" (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for all above)

See I know a little bit something good
Always comes out of a little bit something bad
And I wasn’t looking for someone new
    Till you came down
Giving me the best the time I’ve had
And now you’re on my skin
    Body to body
    Working me out
Yeah you, you play to win
    Rocking me steady
Round after round woah oh oh oh

I wish you were my First Love
‘Cause if you were my first
    Baby there wouldn’t have been
No second, third or fourth love
    Woah oh oh oh
I wish you were my first love
‘Cause if you were my first
    Baby there wouldn’t have been

    Woah oh oh oh

Mistakes I don’t worry ‘bout them no more
    It ain't no thing
‘Cause you got me, I’m on Cloud 9
So good, no I cannot just keep it real
    T-shirt and jeans
See you making me feel so fly
And now you’re on my skin
    Body to body
    Working me out
Yeah you, you play to win
    Rocking me steady
    Round after round
    Woah oh oh oh

I wish you were my first love
‘Cause if you were my first
    Baby there wouldn’t have been
No second, third or fourth love
    Woah oh oh oh
I wish you were my first love
‘Cause if you were my first
    Baby there wouldn’t have been
No second, third or fourth love
    Woah oh oh oh I

You make me wanna ride again ‘cause I
I wanna hear you say my name ‘cause I
You make me wanna ride again ‘cause I
    I, I, I, I
You make me wanna ride again ‘cause I
I wanna hear you say my name ‘cause I
You make me wanna ride again ‘cause I
    I, I, I, I (I)

    Oh uh
    Woah oh oh oh

I wish you were my first love
‘Cause if you were my first
    Baby there wouldn’t have been
No second, third or fourth love
    Woah oh oh oh
I wish you were my first love
‘Cause if you were my first
    Baby there wouldn’t have been
No second, third or fourth love
    Woah oh oh oh

I wish you were my first love
‘Cause if you were my first
    Baby there wouldn’t have been
No second, third or fourth love
    Woah oh oh oh
I wish you were my first love
‘Cause if you were my first
    Baby there wouldn’t have been
No second, third or fourth love
    Woah oh oh oh I

    First Love
  • This upbeat, bass-heavy cut finds Jennifer Lopez paying tribute to her beau:

I wish you were my first love
'Cause if you were first, baby
There wouldn't have been no second, third or fourth love

Many of J-Lo's fans suspect the lyrics are directed to her former backup dancer Casper Smart, whom she had been in a relationship with since October 2011. The pair split shortly after the single's release.
  • The song was produced and co-written by Swedish hitmaker Max Martin, who previously created such hit tunes as "…Baby One More Time," "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and "Roar." "Max Martin [is a] genius, man," Lopez said during a listening party, "He's a super producer, maker of great pop hits. I've always wanted to work with him but our paths [hadn't] crossed. I sought him out."
  • The song was also co-written by Cory Rooney, the co-writer and co-producer of Lopez' #1 hits "Ain't It Funny," "I'm Real" and "If You Had My Love."
  • Lopez told Billboard magazine the story of the song. "We - Max Martin, Cory Rooney, me, everyone - were all talking about relationships, what they're like, how hard work they are, and how it could have been so much simpler if 'the one' was the first one," she recalled. "We talked about it and he (Martin) came back and said, 'I have the song!'"

"I remember I was working on Idol and Max and Cory came on to the set and said, 'You have to hear this! It came out of what we were talking about.' He went in and did it the next day," Lopez continued.

"Those are the best songs for me, the songs that capture an emotion in a couple of words. It's one of the best love songs that I've heard in a long time, for me. The music takes the words to another level."
  • The song's music video was directed by Anthony Mandler, the man behind most of Rihanna's video catalog as well as the likes of Justin Bieber, Jay-Z and Beyonce. The visual features Lopez in the Mojave desert searching for her true love. The singer told People magazine that she relied on Mandler's insight throughout the project, even convincing her to film the video in black and white. "We talked a lot about whether we would do a little bit of color or pops of color," Lopez recalled. "But Anthony felt strongly that it be all in black and white."
  • British model David Gandy played Lopez' love interest in the video. "I've been asked if I'd take part in music videos before and I've always said no, but I jumped at the chance of working with a music icon such as Jennifer," Gandy told Vogue.

The model added that the conditions in the desert made filming a challenge. "The conditions to shoot in were very challenging due to the weather," Gandy said, "we were in the desert outside LA and the winds were incredibly strong and we had to deal with plummeting temperatures and sand storms - but the atmosphere on set was great and we all had a lot of fun."

Rainy Day Women #12 And #35 Lyrics

Rainy Day Women #12 And #35
  • With the line, "Everybody Must Get Stoned," this song is often associated with smoking marijuana, although Dylan insists it isn't, stating, "I have never and never will write a 'drug song.'" It is more likely about trials of relationships with women, and Dylan has hinted that it could have a Biblical meaning. Answering a question about people interpreting this song to be about getting high, Dylan told Rolling Stone in 2012: "These are people that aren't familiar with the Book of Acts."

The Book of Acts is from the Gospel of Luke, and contains an account of a stoning: "Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God... And when they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him, and the witnesses laid aside their robes at the feet of a young man named Saul."

In this story, Stephen received his sentence after giving a speech to authorities who were going to kill him no matter what he said. This relates to how Dylan felt about his critics, who were going to figuratively "stone" him no matter what he did. (More on the meaning of "stoned" in popular songs .)
  • The "official" explanation of how this song got its name: A woman and her daughter came into the recording studio out of the rain. Dylan guessed their ages correctly as 12 and 35.
  • A less official explanation: The song is about two women who came into the studio on a rainy day. Dylan apparently read an article about punishment for women in Islamic states - hence "Everybody must get stoned" because relationships are a trial and error thing. (thanks, Dave - Ballarat, Australia)
  • If you multiply 12 by 35, you get 420, a number commonly associated with smoking marijuana. 420 came about because five high school students in California could only smoke at 4:20 in the afternoon. This time was after school and before their parents came home, so it was a good time for them to get high. (thanks, Dave - Boise, ID)
  • This was one of the few songs Dylan released that was a traditional hit record, reaching the Top 10 in both the US and UK, and spending a week at #2 in America behind "Monday Monday" by The Mamas & The Papas. Perhaps relishing the opportunity to turn a song that repeats "everybody must get stoned" into a radio hit, Dylan cut the song down to 2:26 for the single release. On the Blonde On Blonde album, where it is the first track, the song runs 4:33. The single cuts out two verses and some instrumental passages.

Many radio stations received a publication called the Gavin Report that discussed new songs, and this one was described as a "drug song." Many stations refused to play it, but Dylan was so influential at the time that the song had no trouble getting plenty of airplay.
  • You can hear Dylan burst out laughing in this song. According to Down the Highway: the Life of Bob Dylan by Howard Sounes, the musicians were having a lot of fun in the studio, passing around joints and swapping instruments as they kept the mood light and jovial.
  • This song was covered by The Black Crowes for the 1995 album Hempilation, a collection of songs about marijuana. (thanks, Tim - Columbus, OH)
  • Guitarist and bassist Charlie McCoy played the trumpet on this. He recalled to Uncut magazine March 2014: "(Producer, Bob) Johnston said,'Tonight he wants to do a song with a Salvation Army sound – we need a trumpet and trombone.' I said, 'Does the trumpet need to be good?' He's said, 'no!' I kept track: It took 40 hours to cut Blonde on Blonde."

    Drink You Away Lyrics

Bitter sweet thing, could this be a dream
Or just the same nightmare that keeps me awake
Feel it in my brain, toss out of pain
Pour a little up now, for the love that we made

I feel it in the morning, you’re still here in the morning
I see you, but you gonna telephone the doctor, I’m not okay
The bottom of the bottle, to fill this empty heart up
A thousand proof don’t change the truth
    I tried it, but I can’t

    I can’t Drink You Away
I’ve tried Jack, I’ve tried gin,
I’ve tried all of them in
    I can’t drink you away
All these rocks, I can’t swim out of this skin, oh baby them say
Now tell me, baby, don't they make a medicine for heart break
Ooh, no, tell me baby, oh yeah
Now don't they make a medicine for heart break

Got a pounding on my brain, so I drowned it away
When the sun comes up tomorrow
You can find me doing the same
    'Cause I just can’t forget
The way we turned out this, babe
And now the only thing that sleeps here is a ghost of you instead

I feel it in the morning, you’re still here in the morning
I see you, but you gonna telephone the doctor, I’m not okay
The bottom of the bottle, to fill this empty heart up
A thousand proof don’t change the truth
    I tried it, but I can’t

    I can’t drink you away
I’ve tried Jack, I’ve tried gin,

Now tell me, baby, don't they make a medicine for heart break
Ooh, no, tell me baby, oh yeah
Now don't they make a medicine for heart break

I can’t drink you, no I can’t drink you away, away
I can’t drink you, no I can’t drink you away, away
I can’t drink you, no I can’t drink you away, away
I can’t drink you, no I can’t drink you away, away, away

Ooh, I can’t drink you, I can’t drink you away

    I can’t drink you away
I’ve tried Jack, I’ve tried gin,
I’ve tried all of them in
    I can’t drink you away

    Drink You Away
  • This bluesy Country-Pop tune finds Timberlake trying to find the answers to his woman troubles in the bottom of the bottle:

Bottom of the bottle to fill this empty heart up
A thousand proof don't change the truth

The song also finds Timberlake paying tribute to the blues that his hometown of Memphis is famous for.
  • David Fanning is part of New Voice, the hit-making team that has produced for Scotty McCreery ("I Don't Wanna Be Your Friend") among others." Fanning chose to cover this for his debut solo single. "It's the craziest thing to think that the biggest pop star in the world right now even knows my name," the Red Bow artist told Billboard magazine. "That's very cool."

"It's also amazing to know that someone who is as big as that is as humble to let someone who is new like me record it," he added. "I think you learn so much about Justin from him letting me do this. Anyone could have done the song from Eric Church to Luke Bryan. So for him to give his blessing on it was really cool."
  • Justin Timberlake made a surprise appearance at the 2015 CMAs performing a duet medley with Chris Stapleton of this song and Stapleton's "Tennessee Whiskey."
  • The song was released to country radio following Timberlake's performance with Chris Stapleton at the 2015 CMA Awards. The tune gradually picked up plays and entered the Billboard Country airplay chart for the week dated February 6, 2016 at #60.

This was Timberlake's first entry as a solo artist on the tally. Previously with 'N Sync, he had reached the #3 spot on the Country chart when Alabama re-recorded their hit song "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You" with backing vocals from the boy band.
