He Is Risen Lyrics

He Is Risen
  • Paul Baloche wrote this celebration of Christ's resurrection with British worship songwriter Graham Kendrick in 2013 whilst he was attending a Missions Conference in the South of England. He told NewReleaseTuesday the story of the song: "Graham Kendrick and I have been friends for several years and have tried to write together when we have the chance," he said. "He drove down and we spent the day purposely trying to write a resurrection song with the intent of taking the Gospels, and reading through the Gospel accounts of the Resurrection and they are all similar but worded slightly different. We wrote down some of the key phrases and wanted the verses to re-tell the story."

"The singer, the worshiper, the person in the congregation when they look up at the screen is reminded and it's almost like reading Scripture," Baloche continued. "Verse one begins painting the picture, 'early morning, break of dawn, stumbling to the tomb, standing awestruck, wondering who rolled away the stone, and as they looked they saw an angel clothed in white who said don't be afraid, He is alive.' Our response as the congregation is to this reality to not be afraid, He is alive is 'He is risen, Hallelujah, let the whole world sing, Christ is Risen.' Verse two is intentionally is about from that point on, how does this affect us now? How is the resurrection of Christ relevant to us? The invitation is 'sing, with all creation sing, of a world made new, in His life we too may live, bursting from the tomb.'"

"Using that metaphor that the reason He was raised from the dead, it was not just a historical event that happened, it has a relevant, and present day effect on our lives," he concluded. "It has the potential if we choose to put our faith in Christ, and in His finished work and go. Paul unpacks our new life, our new creation, an opportunity, all things are passed away and the life I lead is the hope of glory. That's really verse two is the relevance to us in the year 2014."

    Clocks
  • Like many Coldplay songs, this is about love. The lyrics are about being in a conflicted, but very intense relationship as precious time slips away.
  • Lead singer Chris Martin came up with the lyrics and the piano riff shortly before Coldplay released the album. Since they didn't have much time, they put it aside and planned to work on it for their next album. When Martin's friend heard the demo, he convinced them to do whatever was necessary to record it for A Rush Of Blood To The Head, especially since the song deals with the importance of time.
  • This won the Grammy for 2003 Record Of The Year, beating out "Hey Ya" by Outkast and "Crazy In Love" by Beyoncé. In accepting the award, lead singer Chris Martin dedicated it to the late Johnny Cash and to US presidential candidate John Kerry, "Who hopefully will be your president someday."
  • Despite the modest chart position in the US, this song was very popular there, as it appeared in television themes, movies, promotional films, and other commercial outlets. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • This plays over the ending credits of the 2003 movie Confidence. (thanks, Nayef - Golden, CO)
  • The song's pulsing, cyclical riff was inspired, according to Martin, by the band Muse.
  • This was voted by BBC6 Music's listeners the best song between 2003-2012 in a poll to celebrate the radio station's tenth anniversary. Arctic Monkeys' debut hit "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" was runner-up.
  • Drummer Will Champion confessed during an episode of VH1's Storytellers that he initially thought this now-ubiquitous song was "absolute rubbish."

    We've Seen Birds
  • Smoke Fairies is a British blues and folk musical duo comprising Katherine Blamire and Jessica Davies. Their 2012 Blood Speaks album sold poorly, despite being critically acclaimed. A disillusioned Davies told Blamire that she felt the pair had gone as far as they could go and didn't feel that Smoke Fairies should continue. It didn't take long for her to change her mind and Davies wrote this musical apology to Blamire. "I just wanted to say sorry to her – sorry I scared you like that," she told The Independent. "We realised this is our life. It was my way of saying, 'I'm back on board, let's go for it.'"
  • The song's music video finds the pair hand-making a giant bird sculpture out of wood which then takes flight from the top of a hill. "We wanted something fantastical and magical to represent the joy of the journey," Blamire told The Independent. "I guess we had come back round to seeing it as something really great that we were doing."

Total Eclipse Of The Heart Lyrics

Turnaround, every now and then I get a little bit lonely and you're never coming round
Turnaround, every now and then I get a little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears
Turnaround, every now and then I get a little bit nervous
That the best of all the years have gone by
Turnaround, every now and then I get a little bit terrified
And then I see the look in your eyes
Turnaround bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart

Turnaround, every now and then I get a little bit restless and I dream of something wild
Turnaround, every now and then I get a little bit helpless and I'm lying like a child in your arms
Turnaround, every now and then I get a little bit angry and I know I've got to get out and cry
Turnaround, every now and then I get a little bit terrified
But then I see the look in your eyes
Turnaround bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you only hold me tight
    We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
'Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
    I really need you tonight
    Forever's gonna start tonight
    Forever's gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
    There's nothing I can do
A Total Eclipse Of The Heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
    Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

    Turnaround bright eyes
    Turnaround bright eyes
Turnaround, every now and then I know you'll never be the boy you always wanted to be
Turnaround, every now then I know you'll always be the only boy who wanted me the way that I am
Turnaround, every now and then I know there's no one in the universe as magical and wondrous as you
Turnaround, every now and then I know there's nothing any better
And there's nothing that I just wouldn't do
Turnaround bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
    We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
'Cause we'll never be wrong together

We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
    I really need you tonight

    Forever's gonna start tonight

    Total Eclipse Of The Heart
  • This was written by Jim Steinman, who wrote all of Meat Loaf's hits, including "Paradise By The Dashboard Light," "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad," and "I'll Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)." Like these Meat Loaf songs, this uses elaborate production and is very long, running 6:51.
  • According to an October 26, 2006 article in the Australian newspaper The Herald Sun, Steinman first offered this song, along with "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" to Meat Loaf for his 1983 album Midnight At The Lost And Found. For financial reasons, Meat's record company wanted him to write his own songs for the album, so this song went to Tyler and "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" went to Air Supply.
  • Bonnie Tyler is from Swansea, Wales. This was the first record by a Welsh artist to top the US chart.
  • This entered the UK charts at #1, making Tyler the first female singer to do so.
  • Drummer Max Weinberg and keyboardist Roy Bittan, who are both members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street band, played on this. So did Rick Derringer, a guitarist who was a member of The McCoys ("Hang On Sloopy") and had a hit on his own with "Rock and Roll, Hootchie Koo."
  • This played a major role in the 2001 movie Bandits. Cate Blanchett's character loves the song, describing it as "The ultimate haiku to the complexity of love." She soon finds out that Bruce Willis' character also loves the song, and their relationship develops.
  • A wedding band sings a surprisingly vulgar version of this in the movie Old School. It was performed by The Dan Band, which is a real group specializing in obscene versions of songs made popular by female singers. (thanks, Natasha - Chico, CA)
  • This is featured in Urban Legends (the first one) when at the beginning of the movie a girl is driving in her car and the killer is in the back seat. She puts this song on and starts singing to it before having her head chopped off. (thanks, Kathleen - Berthierville, Canada)
  • In 1995, a version by Nicki French reached US #2 and UK #5. In 2003, a version by Jan Wayne reached UK #28.
  • Ever wonder how Bonnie Tyler got that raspy voice? After years of singing in nightclubs in Wales, she developed throat nodules and required surgery in 1976. After the operation, her voice developed the distinctive rasp you hear on this song.
  • The distinctive "Turn Around, Bright Eyes" backup vocals were sung by the male vocalist Rory Dodd, who has appeared on many of Jim Steinman's productions and sang backup on albums by Carly Simon, Barry Manilow, Barbra Streisand, Lou Reed and many others.
  • This went on to sell over 5 million records worldwide. It won the Variety Club award in the UK for best single of 1983.
  • The gothic video, with Bonnie Tyler clad all in white, was story-boarded by Jim Steinman and was inspired by the film Future World, the follow-up to the Yul Brunner futuristic thriller Westworld. It was filmed at Holloway Asylum, which was built by a doctor out of the proceeds of a drug he'd invented to help his patients.

The video was directed by Russell Mulcahy, who worked on many of the early videos for Elton John, Billy Joel and Fleetwood Mac. He says that the scene where a shirtless young boy throws a dove into the camera - which was Steinman's idea - earned him the wrath of Tyler. Mulcahy said in the book I Want My MTV: "Bonnie came around the corner and screamed, in her Welch accent, 'You're nothing but a f--king pre-vert!' And she stormed off. There was nothing perverse intended."
  • The song was performed in the Glee episode "Bad Reputation" on May 8, 2010. The subsequent single release debuted at #16 on the Hot 100 with 134,000 digital sales. Out of all the Glee singles, only the cast's debut effort, "Don't Stop Believin'," has registered a bigger sales week-177,000 in its first 7 days.
  • This featured in a much talked about 2012 ad-campaign for the Australian bank, Westpac, in which Tyler walks across water as she sings the song at a wedding.

    Convoy Lyrics

Was the dark of the moon on the sixth of June
    In a Kenworth pullin' logs
Cab-over Pete with a reefer on
    And a Jimmy haulin' hogs
We is headin' for bear on I-one-oh
'Bout a mile outta Shaky Town
I says, "Pig Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck.
"And I'm about to put the hammer down."

'Cause we got a little ol' Convoy
    Rockin' through the night.
Yeah, we got a little ol' convoy,
    Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy
    'Cross the U-S-A.
    Convoy!

By the time we got into Tulsa Town,
We had eighty-five trucks in all.
But they's a roadblock up on the cloverleaf,
    And them bears was wall-to-wall.
    Yeah, them smokies is thick as bugs on a bumper;
They even had a bear in the air!
I says, "Callin' all trucks, this here's the Duck.
"We about to go a-huntin' bear."

'Cause we got a great big convoy
    Rockin' through the night.
Yeah, we got a great big convoy,
    Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy
    'Cross the U-S-A.
    Convoy!

Well, we rolled up Interstate 44
Like a rocket sled on rails.
We tore up all of our swindle sheets,
And left 'em settin' on the scales.
By the time we hit that Chi-town,
    Them bears was a-gettin' smart:
    They'd brought up some reinforcements
    From the Illinois National Guard.
There's armored cars, and tanks, and jeeps,
    And rigs of ev'ry size.
Yeah, them chicken coops was full'a bears
    And choppers filled the skies.
Well, we shot the line and we went for broke
    With a thousand screamin' trucks
An' eleven long-haired Friends a' Jesus
    In a chartreuse micra-bus.

Well, we laid a strip for the Jersey shore
    Prepared to cross the line
I could see the bridge was lined with bears
    But I didn't have a dog-goned dime.
I says, "Pig Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck.
"We just ain't a-gonna pay no toll."
So we crashed the gate doing ninety-eight
I says "Let them truckers roll, 10-4."

'Cause we got a mighty convoy
    Rockin' through the night.
Yeah, we got a mighty convoy,
    Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy
    'Cross the U-S-A.

    Convoy
  • This is a novelty song inspired by the CB radio craze of the mid-'70s. The story of "Convoy" was told in CB jargon and with a Country and Western (the "C.W.") twang. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
  • C.W. McCall is a character created by songwriter Bill Fries. While he displayed musical promise as a child, he was more interested in graphic design. While attending the University of Iowa, Fries studied music and played in the school's concert band, but his major was in fine arts, and after graduation he began handling the art chores at an Omaha, Nebraska television station. After 5 years there, he was hosting his own program, where he drew caricatures of celebrities. Fries signed on as the art director for an Omaha advertising agency in the early '60s, and it was there that he created the character C.W. McCall as a selling tool for an area bakery. A trucker for the fictional Old Home Bread company who spent much of his time in a diner called The Old Home Filler-Up-an'-Keep-On-a-Truckin' Cafe, the McCall character was a huge hit with viewers, and the radio campaign won Fries the advertising industry's prestigious Clio Award. In 1974, Fries decided to cut a record under the McCall moniker, and the single, a monologue with country backing titled after the aforementioned cafe, became a hit. A follow-up single, "Wolf Creek Pass," was even more successful.
  • This hit #1 on both the Pop and Country charts, and a national craze was born.
  • Sam Peckinpah made a 1978 movie based on the song starring Kris Kristofferson and Ally McGraw. By the time the movie was released, however, McCall's music career was largely over. He released two more albums, but in 1977, McCall turned his back on the music industry to focus on the burgeoning environmental movement and moved to the small town of Ouray, CO. He was elected mayor of the town in 1982. An attempt at a comeback in 1990 proved unsuccessful. (thanks, Bob - Knoxville, TN, for above 3)
  • There was a serious side to this song. It dealt with the struggles truckers were facing with restrictive speed limits, tolls, bureaucracy and fuel costs.
  • "Old Home Bread" was a real bread company in Iowa, where the ads were broadcast. They were filmed in Pisgah, a small town in the Western part of the state. (thanks, Scott - Eugene, OR)
  • Some of the CB terms used and their meanings:

Got a Copy - do you hear me?

Jimmy - a GMC truck. GMC no longer builds class 8 trucks.

Headin' for bear - coming up on a police blockade. "Bear" is the CB slang term for "police."

    Shakeytown - Los Angeles, California

Put the hammer down - speed up

    Tulsa-town - Tulsa, Oklahoma

Smokies - highway state patrol officers

Bear in the air - police helicopter

    Ten-nine (10-9) - repeat message

Swindle Sheets - truckers' logs. Truckers have to keep logs of what they were hauling. These "swindle sheets" must be presented to Department Of Transportation officers on request.

    Chi-town - Chicago, Illinois

    Chicken Coop - weigh station

Longhaired friends of Jesus - hippies

Microbus - Volkswagen Microbus. Very popular vehicle among the hippies during the 1960s and 1970s. Another popular song that mentions the Volkswagen Microbus is "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" by Arlo Guthrie.

"Keep the bugs off your glass and the bears off your... tail" - The real phrase is "keep the bugs off your glass and the bears off your a**". A typical CB sign-off that means to drive carefully and watch out for speedtraps.

"What's your twenty?" - "Where are you?"

"Catch you on the flip-flop" - "I'll talk to you on my return trip (on the way back home)." (thanks, Patrick - Tallapoosa, GA)
  • This song is referenced in chapter 5 of the textbook Infrared Detectors and Systems by Dereniak and Boreman. In the same way a journal article or textbook is referenced, the authors point to the song as proof that semitrailer trucks travel in convoys to draw an analogy to how photons, or light quanta, tend to bunch up as they are emitted. If you see me walking down the street
And I start to cry each time we meet
Walk On by, walk on by

    Make believe
That you don't see the tears
    Just let me grieve
In private 'cause each time I see you
    I break down and cry
And walk on by (don't stop)
And walk on by (don't stop)
    And walk on by

I just can't get over losing you
And so if I seem broken and blue
Walk on by, walk on by

    Foolish pride
Is all that I have left
    So let me hide
The tears and the sadness you gave me
    When you said goodbye
    Walk on by
    And walk on by
I just can't get over losing you
And so if I seem broken and blue

    Walk On
  • The songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal Davis wrote this. Bacharach came up with the music, and David wrote the lyrics about a woman asking her former lover to leave her alone.
  • This was released as the B-side to Warwick's single "Any Old Time Of The Day." She'd had several releases that went nowhere, and her latest tune was, in the opinion of her label, her manager, and herself, her last shot at making the Top 40. Murray the K, whose show on radio station WINS was the top-rated program in New York, wouldn't play it. No matter how many people called and pleaded with him, he played the B-side instead because he knew that was the tune with potential. Warwick's record company wasn't happy with this, but listeners agreed with Murray and "Walk On By" became the hit. (thanks to Peter at the Murray the K archives)
  • Isaac Hayes did a 12-minute version on his album Hot Buttered Soul. A Punk band called The Stranglers also recorded it.
  • Other artists who have covered this song include the Carnival, D Train, the Four Seasons, Connie Francis, Aretha Franklin, Gabrielle, Gloria Gaynor, Kool & the Gang, Cyndi Lauper, Steve Lawrence, The Lettermen, Little Anthony And The Imperials, Johnny Mathis, The Miracles, Mitch Ryder And The Detroit Wheels, Helen Shapiro, and Mel Torme. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)
  • Burt Bacharach (from Record Collector magazine): "'Walk On By' was the first time that I tried putting two grand pianos on a record in the studio. I can't remember if I played and Artie Butler played or if Paul Griffin and Artie Butler played but here were two grand pianos going on. I knew the song had something. It was a great date. I walked out of that studio and we had done two tunes in a three-hour session, 'Walk On By' and 'Anyone Who Had A Heart.' I felt very good leaving knowing that I had two monster hits on my hands. You never know for sure but you feel a great satisfaction."
  • On May 12, 2002 Warwick was arrested at Miami International Airport after baggage screeners found marijuana inside a lipstick container she was carrying. The UK publication The Sun reported the story with the headline: "Walk on high, Dionne." (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England)
  • This was given the Q Classic Song honor at the 2012 Q Awards. Presenting the gong to Dionne Warwick, Tim Burgess (frontman of The Charlatans UK) said: "The song involves tears in the street, unrequited love and Groundhog Day-style heartbreak. If you listen properly it's everything but easy listening. It's utter devastation, given dignity by Dionne's rich, beautiful voice - one of the most soulful performances ever given."

    Album: Lazaretto
    Released: 2014

    Lazaretto Lyrics

    Lazaretto
  • The first single from Jack White's second solo album, the song also serves as its title track. The record takes its name from the quarantine stations built for maritime travelers between the 15th and 19th centuries. White told The Observer he is so busy these days that the idea of such a place became almost exotic: "I fantasise about living in one-room apartments and being in a work camp somewhere, where there's absolutely nothing around me but a cot and a teapot and a sink," he said.
  • A limited edition 7-inch of the song was recorded, pressed and released in 3 hours, 55 minutes and 21 seconds, breaking the world record for the world's fastest released disc. Swiss polka trio Vollgas Kompanie, previously held the record when they issued their album Live one day after they recorded it.
  • The B-side of the single is a cover of Elvis Presley's song "Power of My Love."
  • The song features some Spanish lyrics: "Yo trabajo duro, como en madera y yeso," roughly translates to "I work hard, like in wood and plaster." White explained his use of Spanish to NPR: "The character who's singing this song is bragging about himself, but he's actually bragging about real things he's actually accomplished and real things that he actually does, not imaginary things or things he would like to do," he said. "Because sometimes you see people who, they sing from the heart, but they haven't done anything, you know? And their lives are not very interesting or whatever. So this character in this song actually has worked very hard in his life and he's done some interesting things."

You can't sing a lyric like 'I work hard,'" White added. "You can't get away with saying it. So I had to change it to Spanish: 'Yo trabajo duro.' 'I work hard, like in wood and plaster.' There's sort of a triple meaning, that wood and plaster are hard surfaces — as in a painter who 'works in oils.' It's sort of bad Spanish, because you wouldn't say como [to mean] 'as in.'"
  • Some of Lazaretto's lyrics were inspired by short stories and plays White wrote when he was 19 after he'd dropped out of Wayne State University. He came across the box containing his prose in his attic and though much of it was embarrassing, the odd phrase and character was salvageable. "I thought, 'What if you write a song with yourself?' Collaborate with your 19-year-old self on a song," White told The Observer, before quipping: "And don't give him any royalties."
  • Lazaretto topped the Billboard 200 album chart in its debut week. The vinyl LP version also sold 40,000 copies in its first seven days, setting the record for the largest sales week for a vinyl album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.

The vinyl LP's high sales were helped by its unique features, which include including hidden tracks under the inner label, the ability to play the album at three different speeds and holograms that appear on the record's surface when it's being played.
  • This won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance at the 2015 ceremony.

Midnight, gettin' uptight. Where are you?
You said you'd meet me, now it's quarter to two
I know I'm hangin' but I'm still wantin' you.

Hey, Jack, It's a fact they're talkin' in town.

You took my heart, then you took my pride away.

I Hate Myself For Loving You.
Can't break free from the the things that you do.
I want to walk but I run back to you, that's why
I hate myself for loving you.

Daylight, spent the night without you.
But I've been dreamin' 'bout the lovin' you do.
I won't be as angry 'bout the hell you put me through.

Hey, man, bet you can treat me right.
You just don't know what you was missin' last night.
I want to see your face and say forget it just from spite.

I hate myself for loving you .
Can't break free from the the things that you do.
I want to walk but I run back to you, that's why
I hate myself for loving you.

I hate myself for loving you.
Can't break free from the things that you do.
I want to walk but I run back to you, that's why
I hate myself for loving you.

I think of you every night and day.
You took my heart, then you took my pride away.

I hate myself for loving you.
Can't break free from the the things that you do.
I want to walk but I run back to you, that's why
I hate myself for loving you.
I hate myself for loving you.
I hate myself for loving you.

I Hate Myself For Loving You
  • Joan Jett's producer Kenny Laguna told us that Joan came up with the guitar riff for this song and wrote it as "I Hate Myself Because I Can't Get Laid." She took it to the writer/producer Desmond Child , who thought the title would never fly and convinced Joan to change it to something with "Love" in the title. Child, who got a co-writing credit on the song, knows something about the hit potential of love: he also co-wrote "I Was Made For Lovin' You" for Kiss and "You Give Love A Bad Name" for Bon Jovi. He has a knack for finding the right hook and making a song sound larger than life.
  • Desmond Child is a prolific songwriter and producer who has gone on to work with Ricky Martin, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Cher, and many others. Kenny Laguna, who has worked with Joan Jett since she started her solo career, explains how they got Child to work with them: "There was a friend of ours at Epic Records who was friends with Desmond, and before the Bon Jovi record came out, he played me the song 'Livin On A Prayer.' I said, 'Whoa, I want to meet this guy,' so I started chasing Desmond around. He didn't want any part of it because he was busy looking for really important acts like Michael Bolton. I just chased him around until he couldn't take it anymore. There was something about his style I liked, it reminded me of The Four Seasons. Sure enough, he had worked with Bob Crewe."

When we spoke with Desmond, he said, "I had really strong mentors, like Bob Crewe, who taught me how to analyze the structure of songs so that even though you're emotionally invested in it, you also have to have a detachment - there can be no ego."
  • Mick Taylor, who was the lead guitarist in The Rolling Stones in the early '70s, played guitar on this track, including the solo.
  • Pink recorded a version of this song for use on NBC's Sunday Night Football in 2006. In her version, the lyrics are changed to "Waiting all day for Sunday night." The next year, Faith Hill took over from Pink. In 2013, she was replaced by Carrie Underwood.
  • In Steven Tyler's 2011 book Does The Noise In My Head Bother You?, the Aerosmith frontman tells the story about showing up naked at Joan Jett's hotel room door while they were touring together. When she opened, he said, "I hate myself for loving you," and was soundly rejected.
  • This was featured in the movies Striptease (1996) and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009). It also appeared in a 2002 episode of Dawson's Creek.

  • American Songwriter magazine asked Mac DeMarco what exactly is it that "mom don't know" in this song? He replied: "All kinds of stuff. Terrible stuff. I couldn't tell you. Just a young man getting thrown into like… We're at the point where people want to give us stuff and I don't say no much to anybody really. But we've been in some strange situations. So you know, it's just my life I guess."

    Bad Reputation Lyrics

I don't give a damn 'bout my reputation
You're living in the past it's a new generation
A girl can do what she wants to do and that's
    What I'm gonna do
An' I don't give a damn 'bout my Bad Reputation

    Oh no not me
An' I don't give a damn 'bout my reputation
Never said I wanted to improve my station
    An' I'm only doin' good
    When I'm havin' fun
An' I don't have to please no one
    An' I don't give a damn
    'Bout my bad reputation

    Oh no, not me
    Oh no, not me

    I don't give a damn
    'Bout my reputation
I've never been afraid of any deviation
    An' I don't really care
    If ya think I'm strange
    I ain't gonna change
    An' I'm never gonna care
    'Bout my bad reputation

    Oh no, not me
    Oh no, not me

    Pedal boys!
    An' I don't give a damn
    'Bout my reputation
    The world's in trouble
    There's no communication
    An' everyone can say
    What they want to say
    It never gets better anyway
    So why should I care
    'Bout a bad reputation anyway
    Oh no, not me
    Oh no, not me

I don't give a damn 'bout my bad reputation
    You're living in the past
    It's a new generation
    An' I only feel good
    When I got no pain
An' that's how I'm gonna stay
    An' I don't give a damn
    'Bout my bad reputation

    Oh no, not me
    Oh no, not
    Not me, not me

    Bad Reputation
  • Jett wrote this with Kenny Laguna, who produced the album and helped her establish a solo career after her group, The Runaways, broke up. In our interview with Laguna, he said: "It's about Joan having been kind of a wild woman in The Runaways, and us trying to make a record deal, going around having people say, 'No, she's too crazy, like the punks and nazis.' Joan had this bad reputation, no label would sign her - that's why we own the records. It was so frustrating, we thought we should write a song about it. One day Joan said something and I said, 'You shouldn't do this.' I was trying to give her the advice of an old man, but she was a teenager at the time, and she says, 'Look, I don't care about my bad reputation.' I said, 'Whoa, there's the song.'"
  • This song made a very bold statement, establishing Jett as an independent-minded rocker with no concern for traditional gender roles in rock. Her co-writer Kenny Laguna told us: "'I don't give a damn about my reputation, it's a new generation,' that was the whole thing, a girl could do what she wants to do. When she was singing those lyrics, it was radical because there were no girls doing anything other than what they were supposed to do, they were all supposed to be like the girl groups. They were supposed to be dainty, wear dresses. They weren't supposed to play instruments. The song was definitely autobiographical."
  • Laguna had worked for The Who's European record company and was friends with the band. The Who fronted money so he and Jett could make the album, which was called Joan Jett. In Europe, the album was released on a German label called Ariola Records. They didn't want to use this song as a single, and instead released "Jezebel" and "You Don't Know What You Got." They didn't do very well and Laguna bought the record back from Ariola for $10,000. In the US, they released the album on their own label, Blackheart Records, and changed the track order so this led off the album.
  • Joan Jett made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 and developed a reputation as a leading lady of rock, but around this time, she was struggling to get noticed and trying to get airplay.

Kenny Laguna told us how this song ended up on one very influential station, which gave it the push it needed. "I remember Dan Neer, who was one of the top DJs in New York at WNEW, his girlfriend was helping us out with publicity," he said. "She brought him down to see Joan play in Brooklyn and he left after three songs - I thought he hated it. The next day WNEW started playing 'Bad Reputation,' which is not the song we wanted them to play, we wanted them to play 'Do You Wanna Touch Me,' but it became their breakout song of the week. In those days, the AOR stations were alternative, but real alternative, not like today's alternative which is really a Top 40 format and is all about record company priorities. These guys were playing something on an independent label. Every time a station didn't want to play 'Touch Me' or burned it out, we would make them play 'Bad Reputation.' That was the beginning of the song becoming known. Then there were a few bands that covered it, and it just took off."
  • When this started getting airplay, it attracted the attention of record labels and Jett signed a deal with Boardwalk Records. The album was then remixed and the title was changed to Bad Reputation. The next year, Jett released "I Love Rock And Roll," which was a huge hit, but not the one Jett wanted to be known for the rest of her life - she didn't write that one.
  • This became Jett's signature song, and although it's very well known, it was never released as a single.
  • Speaking about recording this song, Kenny Laguna said: "We tried to do one of those speedy punk rock songs. The day we recorded it, we didn't know it too well, we just managed to get a good drum track. Joan had to play all the guitars - the rhythm track was pretty good. I put on like a Jerry Lee Lewis piano, but until the piano went on, it really sounded kind of unfinished."
  • This was the theme song to the NBC TV show Freaks And Geeks. The show was about a group of kids trying to deal with high school. It was canceled after one season in 1999-2000, but had a large cult following and was praised by critics who felt it would have gotten better ratings if NBC gave it a chance.
  • Some of the movies this has been used in include Shrek, Wonderland, Kingpin Baby Mama, Kick-Ass and 10 Things I Hate About You. It's very popular for scenes that portray an outcast in a lighthearted way.
  • The MMA champion fighter Ronda Rousey uses this song as her entrance theme.
  • When Jett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, she was the first to perform at the ceremony, and opened her set with this song.
