The song's music video was directed by Sofia Mattioli, who is a London-based artist and poet. The clip shows deaf children and young adults dancing in response to both the director's movements and the music's vibrations in the air. "I was on a train listening to music, getting deep into it, and this girl started staring at me," Mattioli told Nowness of the genesis of her visual. "After a while I took my headphones off and she came up to me, started signing and then wrote me a note to say that she was deaf but could almost feel the music by my movement."

With the germ of an idea from this chance encounter, Mattioli created the video using 13 members of the Manchester Deaf Centre. "The relationship between silence and music is a big part of what I am trying to express with my work," said Mattioli. "The first kid in the video, Archie, was bliss—all of them were amazing. I hope this is a project I can develop further."

The clip won Best Video at the 2014 Q Awards. Jamie told Q magazine how the video came about: "The idea came from Sofia," he said, "she's obsessed with the correlation between sound and silence and she wanted to see if her movements and vibrations of my song could influence deaf and partially deaf children and adults - to see if they would be able to dance to the music even if they couldn't hear it. It's a very honest, touching and I guess, beautiful video."

This samples the barbershop vocals from the Four Freshmen's 1952 track "It's a Blue World."

What's This Life For

A track from Creed's first album, Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti wrote the song after hearing the news that one of Tremonti's best childhood friends had committed suicide. In our interview with Tremonti , he talked about the meaning: "It's a song about suicide and kids searching for that meaning of life. It's tough sometimes for kids in high school, junior high school, to go through a lot of the depression he went through that led him to commit suicide. So I wrote about that."

As Tremonti remembers it, he wrote the music and also the verse and chorus lyrics - Stapp came up with the bridge.

This became one of Creed's most popular songs, but it took a while to get there. The My Own Prison album was first released in April 1997 on an independent label called Blue Collar Records. It sold well enough in their home turf of Florida to get the attention of BMG subsidiary Wind-Up Records, which signed the band and brought in producer Ron Saint-Germain to remix it.

Wind-Up re-released the album and launched a promotional campaign, breaking the band nationally by distributing the title track to radio stations and commissioning a video, which did well on MTV. The next promotional single was "Torn," which was followed by "What's This Life For." By this time, the band was picking up traction on radio and the album was a top-seller.

In an effort to boost album sales, the Creed singles at this time weren't sold in the US, which made them ineligible for the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, Billboard had another chart that perfectly suited Creed's sound: Mainstream Rock. In September 1998, "What's This Life For" became the band's first #1 on that chart, taking the top spot for six weeks. The first single from their follow-up album, Human Clay, was "Higher," which stayed at #1 for 17 weeks, longer than any other song in the chart's history to that point.

The video was directed by Ramaa Mosley , who also did Creed's "Higher" video and "Superman (It's Not Easy)" for Five For Fighting.

Striking landscapes are a hallmark of Creed videos, and this one is set in the desert plains, where we see the band performing. In other scenes, we see various disaffected folks trying to escape their cumbersome lives, which they do at the end of the clip, joining the band at the end where they exult under a rain shower as Scott Stapp sings, "We all live under the rain."

The video was shot in a desert near Joshua Tree National Park in California. In our interview with Mosley, she explained: "I had this tremendous fascination with weather and trying to capture this on film. Weather is very mysterious and powerful and I wanted to make a video that set men against the forces of nature. I wanted the video for Creed to feel that the music and the band had performed so passionately that a storm approached."

This was featured in the 1998 movie Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. A version of the video was made incorporating scenes from the film.

Pea

This song is about bassist Flea and how when he was younger, he was small and got picked on a lot. During Flea's younger years he was by himself and a group of guys called him a name because he had pink hair, so he flicked them off. They proceeded to beat him up. When Flea came home, Hillel (Chili Peppers' guitarist) was making a big pot of soup. He saw Flea's beat up face and said, "Oh my God! What happened?" When Flea told him what happened, Hillel yelled, "Come on let's go get 'em!" But Flea just took one look at skinny Hillel, his soup, and back to Hillel, "Nah man it's alright." So the song is about two things, that story in particular, and also about the great feeling of being really small in a huge world. Flea has said he loves feeling as small as an ant when walking through a forest with huge trees. (thanks, Ty - Hudson, WI)

The line about the "Homophobic redneck dick" refers to the people that were beating up Flea. This line was not Wal-Mart friendly, and RHCP had to distribute versions of the One Hot Minute album without the song to the retailer.

A popular Lenten vegetable in England during the later Middle Ages was the pea. There were no known "green peas" until after the 1066 Norman Conquest of England. In 1150 among foods stored at the Barking Nunnery, near London, were "green peas for Lent." Dried peas were one of the principal foods for the poor as they were cheap and filling. This is about getting back at people who treat you badly. Around this time, Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit would bash Creed lead singer Scott Stapp at shows. Touch Of Grey

Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics, as he did with many Dead songs, although Garcia wrote the line, "Light a candle, curse the glare." This is according to the book Box Of Rain, which was written by Hunter and is a collection of his published songs. In the book, it is "A Touch of Grey" and has an asterisk next to the line Jerry wrote. There is no definite reasoning for the song - many feel it's about aging, but many also feel it's about all the drugs they've done. (thanks, Eric - Houston, TX)

The Mighty Diamonds covered this in 1996 on Fire On The Mountain, an album of Reggae versions of Grateful Dead songs.

According to David Dodd in The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics, the line "Light a Candle, curse the glare" is a play on Adlai Stevenson's 1962 reference to Eleanor Roosevelt's death. He said, "She would rather light a candle than curse the darkness." The line, "The Ables and the Bakers and the Cs" refers to the first two words in an older version of the military communication alphabet, "Able" and "Baker." The song is about the band aging gracefully. The phrase "Touch Of Grey" is a reference to getting older. For most people, their hair starts getting grey as they age.

This was The Grateful Dead's first and only hit song. They had a huge following and were never concerned with chart hits. They didn't have to be because their albums sold well and their tours sold very well.

They made a video for this, which was the first one they made for MTV. They shot it during a concert at Laguna Seca Raceway in California, which let them use a real audience. The video shows the band playing the song as skeleton puppets. At the end, they transform into the real band members.
