This is about the Vietnam War. The "Light Green" refers to the area on a map of Vietnam. Dark green was an area where there had been no defoliants ("Agent Orange," for instance) and where there was plenty of cover. Light green meant it had been cleared, but there were likely minefields and probably Vietnamese around (because it had been cleared).

The areas named in the first part of the song: Puckapunyal, Townsville, Shoal Water, Nui Dat and Vung Tau are all real places. Puckapunyal was a training center for army recruits. Townsville is a town in Queensland; Shoal Water was used for military training exercises, and Nui Dat and Vung Tau were Australian bases in Vietnam. The "SLR" is the Self Loading Rifle, the standard armament of Australian Infantry in Vietnam. "Greens" in the lyrics are simply camo uniforms. "Chinooks" are helicopters, or "Choppers," and VB is a type of Australian beer - it stands for Victorian Bitters.

There's some dispute over whether the lyrics say "Asian Orange" or "Agent Orange." Either could make sense.

The "Rash that comes and goes" was a common side effect of working with Agent Orange. It could persist until you died, basically.

Being "Dusted Off" means an evacuation of a soldier due to medical reasons. "Contact" means, in this case, either that the soldiers had sighted an enemy or spotted a mine. "Hooked in there for hours" refers to grenades.

"The Grand Hotel" was a hotel in Vung Tau that had been converted for Army use. ANZAC stands for "Australian and New Zealand Army Corps." "Pieces" are shrapnel.

All the proceeds from this song were donated to the Australian Vietnam Veterans Association.

The song precipitated a Royal Commission into the use and effects of chemical agents in the Vietnam War by the Australian military.

Since the moon landing was on the 20th of July, the line, "And Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon. God help me, he was going home in June" means that Frankie was still 11 months from going home.

The Giving Tree

This acoustic ballad was written and sung by guitarist Tim Lopez. The song describes a dysfunctional give-and-take relationship and references Shel Silverstein's children's book of the same title, which Lopez recalls being read to him as a kid.

Frontman Tom Higgenson commented to Radio.com of the tune's bare production: "A song like 'The Giving Tree' that Tim wrote, it just felt so good with his finger-picking thing. It felt like that's the way the song should stay."

"Sometimes adding to a song like that just takes away. What you really want to do is suck the listener in to only hear the story and the vocal," Lopez added. "So, you keep piling stuff on it and it starts to deteriorate the song. Tracks like that you leave small."

Remedy

In our interview with Black Crowes lyricist/frontman Chris Robinson , he explained: "'Remedy' is a song that essentially is about freedom. We were into the whole idea that the 'war on drugs' was just silly - it was this asinine concept to me and millions of other people. So that song to me is about freedom, plain and simple, just put in a Rock & Roll framework."

A track from the second Black Crowes album, this was their last song to make the Hot 100 - a surprising development considering they charted three songs from their first album and had a lot of radio support. As the band moved forward, the focused more on their core fanbase (the "connoisseurs" as Chris Robinson calls them), which circumscribed their popular fortunes.

The pro-marijuana stance the band espouses in this song is something they played up around this time. To help promote the album, they appeared on the cover of High Times magazine, played the Atlanta Pot Festival, and had signage at their concerts with marijuana leaves.

He Didn't Have to Be

The second single from Brad Paisley's debut album, Who Needs Pictures, this became his first Country #1 in December 1999, holding the top spot for one week.

The song was penned by Paisley with his frequent co-writer and best friend Kelley Lovelace and based on the latter's relationship with his stepson McCain Merren. "'He Didn't Have to Be' was probably the most life-changing three minutes that I've ever written, because I really believe we wouldn't be sitting here anymore talking," Paisley said. "Maybe we'd be sitting here with me having written a #1 song for somebody else, but I don't think I'd still have a record deal without that song. It broke the ice for me with radio. It was like you could see potential in it, and that's an important thing. I was really lucky, it wasn't like we knew what we were doing. I just happened [to write] that with my best friend from the bottom of my heart about his situation."

This was written from the perspective of a son of a single mother; we hear how the single mom begins dating a new man who immediately builds a relationship with the child as well. Lovelace co-penned it from personal experience having become a step-dad to McCain Merren when he married his wife, Karen. According to an interview with the songwriter in USA Weekend magazine, Paisley said to him, "Let's make a song about you two that will make your wife cry."

Top session drummer Eddie Bayers played on this. The winner of the Academy of Country Music's Drummer of the Year Award for eight straight years, Bayers has played on songs by the likes of John Denver, George Straitt, The Beach Boys, Garth Brooks, Glen Campbell, Kenny Chesney and Elton John.

The song was later included on Paisley's 2009 album, Playlist: The Very Best of Brad Paisley, as well as on his 2010 Hits Alive record.

The Lovecats

This was initially written as a parody, and Robert Smith later distanced himself from the song. In Rock & Folk magazine, Smith said: "The Love Cats is far from being my favorite song: composed drunk, video filmed drunk, promotion made drunk. It was a joke."

The video was shot in a mansion which had been "borrowed" from an estate agent who believed they wanted to buy it. In the morning they returned the keys.

This was the first UK Top 10 hit for The Cure.

According to the actress Molly Ringwald, the late director John Hughes worked on a script for a movie based on this song. She recalled in an interview with Vanity Fair that once Hughes had completed The Breakfast Club, "he gave me a mix tape of what the soundtrack was gonna be. Which was pretty much Dave Brubeck, with the last song by Bob Dylan."

The song was originally called "The Love Cats" (three separate words), as evidenced by the single cover and twelve-inch label. The singles compilation Standing on a Beach/Staring at the Sea (vinyl/CD) listed the song as "The Love Cats" on the tray card and CD, but "The Lovecats" on the booklet. In 2001, when the Greatest Hits album was released, the song was listed as "The Lovecats."

This is a track from Because The Internet, the second album released by Childish Gambino. The actor/rapper explained to NME how a conversation between his musician friend Beck and himself inspired its title. "Beck told me that rappers would always tell him how much they liked him," said Gambino. "He asked me whether it was still like that, and I found myself going, 'Because of the internet...' He joked, 'You should name your album that.' It made sense – you can start every sentence like that now."

Gambino produced the song with the help of Drake's "Pound Cake" production duo Christian Rich, who are the twin brothers Taiwo "Christian" Hassan and Kehinde "Rich" Hassan.

This anthemic song finds Gary Numan reacting to his sudden celebrity and the apparently overwhelming adulation of his fans. He recalled to Mojo magazine December 2013: "I was really struggling with fame. It wasn't what I expected. My issues were connected with Asperger's. I was young, had this personality problem and suddenly I was famous. Not famous in a band, I was solo. I didn't have a manager; I was with a record company that had no success of their own, and I did everything – wrote, produced, did the album sleeves, played almost everything. "She" is not based on any one person – it is a composite. It is about the idea, emotion, and feeling of desperation. Mvula told Songfacts : "I'm fascinated by the idea that as human beings, even in that ultimate sort of desperation - loneliness or isolation or coming to the end of yourself - there could be something as small as hope, as small as a mustard seed. It could be minute, but it's enough to sustain you for however much longer. When it feels like you have nothing left, there's always something. For some people it's God, for others it's relationships, or whatever."

Laura Mvula spent years dabbling in music without taking the plunge and devoting herself to it full time. She played some solo gigs, earned small writing commissions and taught music to kids whilst working as a supply teacher and receptionist. It was the divorce of her parents that kickstarted Mvula into pursuing music as a career, her muse fueled by the uncertainty of her family life. This autobiographical song was the breakthrough. She told Mojo magazine: "I remember the afternoon I wrote 'She.' The beauty of it, the personal beauty, is I know how necessary that was for me. It was the first thing I'd done that I recalled listening back to and feeling, This really moves me."

The dam burst after Mvula wrote this song and next came the other tracks that comprise her debut EP, She as well as the single "Green Garden." Mvula told The Guardian how the songs she wrote were borne from the anguish she'd experienced after her parents split. "These songs have been a fantastic therapy for me," she revealed. "I needed to write them. They evoke the emotions of being lost or left, or loss in general. Things are really complicated, very painful and deep, and the music has been part of the process."
