Somewhere In My Car

This is the opening track of Keith Urban's Fuse album. Longtime producer Dann Huff had been in charge of the singer's previous five LP's, but the singer used ten separate producers to create the sounds on this release including Mike Elizondo (Eminem, Pink, Fiona Apple), Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Little Big Town, The Wallflowers), Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift, The Band Perry) and Stargate (Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ne-Yo). Huff did co-produce "Somewhere in My Car," as well as playing guitar on the song.

Multi-instrumentalist Matt Mahaffey played keyboards and drums on this song. The Tennessee-bred, Los Angeles-based artist has produced and/or performed with a number of popular artists including Beck, Beyoncé and Pink as well as rapper, Luke Fiasco. He also composed the bluegrass style jingle for on-line travel site Expedia.com.

Fuse debuted atop the Billboard 200 All-Genre Album Chart. It arrived at #1 in the United States, Canada and Australia simultaneously, the first time that a male country artist had ever done so.

Urban penned the song with songwriter J.T. Harding, whose other hits include Jake Owen's "Alone With You." Keith actually had the first glimmer of the idea for the song in his car. "I had a day scheduled to write with him, and I had just gotten this song, this particular song that I heard and downloaded by a particular artist, and I loved the rhythm and the energy and the whole thing about it," recalled Keith. "I got J.T. and put him in the car, and turned it up as loud as I could and said, '[Yelling] We need something like this!' But a similar song structure – and the song was born of that."

When Urban played the song for the sold-out crowd during the 2014 CMA Music Festival, he said it was about "reminiscing and missing an old love."

Cars figure several times on the Fuse album. As well as this song, two other tracks, "Cop Car" and "Red Camaro" have a motor vehicle in the title. "The car theme figures heavily in a lot of my songs, 'cause I love cars and I love listening to music in cars, and I love all of the moments – all kinds of moments that we humans experience only in cars," said Urban. "As couples and arguments and makeup sessions and make-out sessions and everything, I just love everything to do with cars."

Though this song follows Urban's familiar car theme, it is actually about something a little different than just driving a motor vehicle. "I love trucks, cars, everything, and we've got some truck songs on the record," he told ABC News Radio. "But 'Somewhere in My Car' is really … it's not really about a car so much as it is what happens in the backseat of a car."

The song's music video was directed by John Urbano, who also filmed Urban's previous clip for "Cop Car." Shot in Cincinnati during his Raise 'Em Up Summer Tour, the visual features models Jehane Paris from Miami and Brazilian Rodrigo Calazans. "When Keith asked me to direct the video my head started swimming with ideas because the song is so cinematic," Said Urbano. "I wanted to make a music video where the imagery and song writing felt like they were created at the same time."

"From the beginning we both wanted this video to be hot with the concept being about how this guy goes mildly crazy thinking about his past relationship," he continued. "In his mind he's 'somewhere in his car', where he's having multiple flashbacks that build emotionally with each chorus."

Bono wrote the lyrics about how rich countries (especially the United States) give third-world countries only the crumbs from their tables, meaning very little relief in helping these poor nations out of debt: "Where you live should not decide, whether you live or whether you die." Bono has been involved in a number of humanitarian efforts.

Bono (from Q Magazine November 2004): "I went to speak to Christian fundamentalist groups in America to convince them to give money to fight AIDS in Africa. It was like getting blood from a stone. I told them about a hospice in Uganda where so many people were dying they had to sleep three to a bed. Sister Anne, who I mention in the song, works at that hospice. Her office is a sewer."

Vocalist Jason Butler told Kerrang! magazine about the inspiration for this song: "Slightly embarrassingly, I wrote it one night after having shared some rather intimate moments with this girl," he said laughing. "I woke up, and there was a bunch of things I wanted to say to explain what I was thinking was going to happen between her and I following that intimacy... But I was a pussy and I was too scared to wake her up. I just wanted to really explain to her what was going on in my head."

Butler explained the lyric about God to Kerrang! "The idea was me considering women to be somewhat of a deity," he said. "And while I do find women to be fantastic and beautiful and givers of life, I was looking at it more in the romantic sense, taking over everything in my life and putting these strange, rose-coloured blinders on, as opposed to lenses."

So why did Butler chose to spell 'Cult' with a 'V'? "To reference older spellings," he explained "There are a lot of eras where they would just use the 'V' as a 'U.' It just sort of represents an archaic idea."

In this duet between Usher and Alicia Keys, they play a couple who have split up, but still have strong feelings for each other. Usher explains that they got together when they were very young, and now that she's with another man, it's tearing him up, but he'll always consider her his boo (special girl). Keys explains that she feels the same way, and that even though there is another man in her life, Usher will always be her boo.

This song brought the Boo back after a long absence. The term "boo" (derived from the French "beau," meaning beautiful), caught on in the mid-'90s, and in 1996 the one-hit-wonder Ghost Town DJ's went to #31 US with a different song called "My Boo." That same year, The Almighty RSO had a modest hit with "You Could Be My Boo," but that was the last of the charting Boo songs until this Usher/Alicia Keys collaboration.

The connection between the 1996 "My Boo" and the 2004 song is Jermaine Dupri: he released the former on his So So Def label, and he produced the later.

The song features an early example of guitar distortion. Like all of the songs on Bat Out Of Hell, this was written by Jim Steinman, a songwriter/producer with a very theatrical style that comes through on this track. Like "Paradise By the Dashboard Light," "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" is a story of young lust, but with a far more satisfying ending for our hero. Set on a hot summer night under the moonlight on a deserted beach, he finds himself so entranced with his flame that he can't even say the words "I Love You," as he is overcome with desire.

It's a song of pure passion, which is classic Steinman. Other songs he wrote include "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" by Bonnie Tyler and "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" by Celine Dion.

The album version of this song contains a spoken intro ("On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses..."). That's not Meat Loaf - the male voice is Jim Steinman and the woman is Marcia McClain, an actress who played Dee Stewart on the Soap Opera As the World Turns.

Steinman wrote the dialogue for his stage production Neverland, which was performed five months before the Bat Out Of Hell album was released. Three songs he wrote for the play were used on the album: the title track, "Heaven Can Wait" and "All Revved Up with No Place to Go."

This was the first single released from Bat Out Of Hell, which was Meat Loaf's third solo album. His first two albums made little impact, but Bat had wings, selling millions of copies not just upon its release, but also for many years later, mostly though catalog sales.

The album took a while to catch on, however. In the UK, this song was released as a single in March 1978 and charted at #33 in May. In America, the single was released in January 1978, and went nowhere. The album gained momentum throughout 1978 as radio stations added the songs to their playlists, especially those running the Album Oriented Rock format that was popular at the time. "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" was the next single, and this one caught on in the US, reaching #11 in July. After "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" made #39 in September, "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" was re-released, this time going to #39 in January 1979 - 15 months after the album came out.

The album version of this song runs 5:04, but the single release excised the dialog and comes in at 3:48.

Jim Steinman put lots of intimate details into this song's lyric: "fog crawling over the sand," "your lipstick shining." Bruce Springsteen also stamps his songwriting in this manner, and the similarities go beyond the words: two of Springsteen E Street Band members, pianist Roy Bittan and drummer Max Weinberg, played on this track. The album was produced by Todd Rundgren , who later said that the songs were really outsized versions of what Bruce would do.

This over-the-top bombast was noted by the musicians working on the album. Kasim Sulton , who played bass on the tracks (he was also in Rundgren's band Utopia), said in our 2013 interview: "Through the whole process I remember distinctly saying to myself, 'This is just the biggest joke that I've ever been involved in.' It was ridiculous, but it was good. Everybody certainly took it seriously, even though I'm sure that Roy and Max felt the same that I did: 'Okay, I'm just getting paid, it's a record. What am I going to have for dinner tonight?'"

Moondance

Van Morrison comes up with songs many different ways, sometimes a lyric or title idea sparks a song, and other times it's a melody. "Moondance" started as a Jazz saxophone instrumental, and Van played that original sax solo he wrote for the song. He told Rolling Stone magazine: "I used to play this sax number over and over, anytime I picked up my horn."

That Rolling Stone quote is about all you're going to get from Van regarding the song. He is notoriously fickle when it comes to speaking about his music, as he feels that the songs should speak for themselves. The liner notes to the Moondance album were written by his girlfriend Janet Planet, and instead of a traditional explanation of the recording process or a list of thank-you's these notes are a fable, telling the story of an artist in ancient times who has a great gift but keeps it to himself. When his wife gets sick, he cures her using his gift of song. She then asks, "But who will ease your pain, who will save you?"

The flute is a big part of this song. It was played by Collin Tilton, who replaced John Payne on the instrument for the Moondance album.

This song plays throughout the sex scene in the 1981 movie An American Werewolf in London (Director John Landis also asked Cat Stevens for the use of "Moonshadow," but was turned down). It was also used in a 2002 episode of the TV series The West Wing.

Pianist and organist Jeff Labes recalled the recording of the track to Uncut: "I remember 'Moondance' itself was a big question mark. It was jazzy, and didn't seem to belong to the pack. The first time we recorded it, it came out really well, but Van thought there must be a catch. So we did it about a dozen times, and ended up going back to the first one, He liked to sing live along with the track, because Sinatra did that. He loved having a first-take vocal. He was looking for the magic."

Black Cat

This was the only song on the Rhythm Nation album to be written entirely by Jackson. It was produced by guitarist Jellybean Johnson, who also performed on the track.

The song finds Janet warning her bad-boy boyfriend that he needs to shift his priorities before he loses both her and his life. Two superstitions/folk tales come into play on the track: cats having nine lives and black cats being a sign of bad luck. Janet sees her man as someone whose lives are quickly running out, and also a negative influence on her.

Although she didn't win the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance with this song (she lost to Alannah Myles for "Black Velvet"), Janet became the first artist to earn nominations across Pop, Dance, Rock, Rap, and R&B categories when "Black Cat" was nominated.

Jimmy Jam, another of her producers, encouraged Jackson to tap into her Rock side with this song. "One night I told her I wanted her to sound like a Rock and Roll queen on it - she usually uses one of her other voices to sing R&B funk. This, you wanted to be funky, but more rocked out. That was what I was trying to get her to do, and she did it in one or two takes."

Jackson employed a real black leopard during her concerts until some fans became concerned about the cat's welfare. She announced: "While the illusion with the cat was appreciated by most of the audience, if it caused even a few people to worry about the safety of the cat, it's not worth keeping it."

But there was really nothing to worry about, she added. "I know how well the animal was treated by its trainer and my production staff. I love animals and would never do any harm, or allow anyone to do any harm, to one. Rather than let my fans worry, I would rather do without the cat."
