Stripes Lyrics

[VERSE 1:]
You were lyin' there with nothing on
But a goofy little grin and a platinum blonde
I can't believe you'd do that on our bed
I got a pistol and I got a bullet
And a pissed off finger just'a itchin' to pull it
The only thing keepin' me from losin' my head

[CHORUS:]
Is I hate Stripes and orange ain't my color
And if I squeeze that trigger tonight
I'll be wearin' one or the other
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes

Woah, woah, woah

[VERSE 2:]
I could fall in love with the prison guard
I could sell cigarettes in the prison yard
Don't think hard time would be that hard on me
I could pick up trash on the side of the road
But I'd die if I saw someone I know
Ain't the chains, it's the clothes that's stoppin' me

[CHORUS:]
I hate stripes and orange ain't my color
And if I squeeze that trigger tonight
I'll be wearin' one or the other
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes

[BRIDGE:]
Oh, and one shot ain't worth a bad mugshot
God knows I wouldn't be caught holdin' up a number
While the whole town's starin' at the picture
In the paper of me wearin' stripes

[FINAL CHORUS:]
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes
And orange ain't my color
And if I squeeze that trigger tonight
I'll be wearin' one or the other
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes

Woah, woah, woah, woah

Stripes
  • Already a successful songwriter with credits for #1 hits by The Band Perry ("Better Dig Two") and Miranda Lambert ("Mama's Broken Heart"), Brandy Clark released her first solo album, 12 Stories on October 22, 2013. This is her first single from the collection.
  • This tells a dark but humorous tale of a woman who decides not to murder her cheating lover as prison uniforms aren't flattering. Clark told Billboard magazine: "That song seems to push a lot of buttons with a lot of people, women in particular. It's kind of a fantasy – that thought of 'I just caught you cheating on me. I'd shoot you right now, but I'm too vain. I don't look good in orange, and I hate stripes. I can deal with prison, but I can't deal with that part of it.' It's probably the most fun song on the record."
  • The song features the rather cool lyric: "There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion." Clark smiled to Billboard: "I wish I could say that was my line when we were writing it. I wrote that with Matt Jenkins and Shane McAnally. Shane and I both remember when Matt said that, and how obvious that is, but none of us had thought it. He just says it, and we were like 'Yeah, that's it.'"
  • The song's music video was directed by Becky Fluke (Little Big Town, Pistol Annies). HLN legal commentator Nancy Grace plays a cameo role.
  • Clark penned this with Matt Jenkins and Shane McAnally during a writing retreat. "It was too loud, so we decided to go down the road and find a park or whatever to write at," she recalled to Spin magazine. "But instead, we stopped at this house where no one was. The fence was locked, so we jumped over it. We're sitting out on these people's deck, completely trespassing, writing a song, and Matt and I were both very nervous that they were gonna come home: Every time a car would drive by, he would jump up and look around the corner. It became a little bit distracting, and at some point, he [jumped up again], and I said, 'Oh, c'mon Matt, the worst that could happen is we'll be wearing orange jumpsuits.' And Shane said, 'I've always wanted to write a song called 'Orange,' about a woman who wants to shoot her husband, but she doesn't like the color orange. But nothing rhymes with it.' And I said, 'Yeah, but everything rhymes with stripes.' And we were just off."
  • 12 Stories was named the best album of 2013 in any genre by New York Magazine's Jody Rosen, New York Post's Michaelangelo Matos, NPR's Ann Powers, Slate, and Boston Globe's Sarah Rodman.

    Furthest Thing Lyrics

    Somewhere between psychotic and iconic
Somewhere between I want it and I got it
Somewhere between I'm sober and I'm lifted
Somewhere between a mistress and commitment
But I stay down, girl I always stay down
Get down, have her lay down
Promise to break everybody off before I break down
    Everyone just wait now
So much on my plate now
People I believed in they don't even show they face now
What they got to say now?
    Nothin' they can say now
Nothin' really changed but still they look at me a way now
What more can I say now?
What more can I say now?
You might feel like nothin' was the same

I still been drinkin' on the low
    Mobbin' on the low
    Fuckin' on the low
    Smokin' on the low
I still been plottin' on the low
    Schemin' on the low
    The Furthest Thing from perfect
    Like everyone I know

I just been drinkin' on the low
    Mobbin' on the low
    Fuckin' on the low
    Smokin' on the low
I just been plottin' on the low
    Schemin' on the low
    The furthest thing from perfect
    Like everyone I know

And I hate that you don't think I belong to ya
Just too busy runnin' shit to run home to ya
You know that paper my passion
Bittersweet celebrations, I know I can't change what happened
    I can't help it
    I can't help it
I was young and I was selfish
I made every woman feel like she was mine and no one else's
    And now you hate me
    Stop pretendin', stop that frontin'
    I can't take it
Girl don't treat me like a stranger
Girl you know I seen ya naked
Girl you know that I remember, don't be a pretender
Gettin' high at the condo, that's when it all comes together
    You know I stay remniscin'
    And makeup sex is tradition
    But you been missin' girl
And you might feel like nothin' was the same

I still been drinkin' on the low
    Mobbin' on the low
    Fuckin' on the low
    Smokin' on the low
I still been plottin' on the low
    Schemin' on the low
    The furthest thing from perfect
    Like everyone I know

I just been drinkin' on the low
    Mobbin' on the low
    Fuckin' on the low
    Smokin' on the low
I just been plottin' on the low
    Schemin' on the low
    The furthest thing from perfect
    Like everyone I know

    Drinkin', smokin', fuckin', plottin'
    Schemin', plottin', schemin', gettin' money
    Drinkin', fuckin', smokin', plottin', schemin'
    Plottin', schemin', getting money

    This the life for me
My mama told me this was right for me
I got em worried, like make sure you save a slice for me
I should have Spoons, serve you up with a fork and knife for me
Your actions make us doubt you
Your lack of effort got me rapping different
This the shit I wanna go out to
Play this shit at my funeral if they catch me slippin'
Naked women swimming that's just how I'm living
Donate a million to some children, that's just how I'm feeling
A nigga filling up arenas, who the fuck can see us
I had to Derrick Rose the knee up before I got the re-up
    Yours truly the boy
I just build and build more
    Y'all niggas build and destroy
You niggas party too much, man I just chill and record
No filler, you feel it now if you ain't feel it before
Yes Lord, this the shit I wanna go out to, yeah
This the shit I wanna go out to

    Furthest Thing
  • This Jake One co-produced track finds Drake examining the duality imposed by fame and his personal limbo:

    "Somewhere between psychotic and iconic
Somewhere between I want it and I got it
Somewhere between I'm sober and I'm lifted
Somewhere between a mistress and commitment."

Happily the song closes on a celebratory note as the successful Toronto MC comes to the realization that "this is the life for me."
  • Drake boasts in the third verse about how he's got his competitors scared that when he's finished rapping, there won't be anything left for them:

"I got 'em worried, like make sure you save a slice for me.
I should have Spoons serve you up with a fork and knife for me."

Drake is not only continuing the food metaphor in the second line, but also referencing his cutlery-monikered bodyguard Spoons. Drake shouted out another of his bodyguards, his longtime buddy Chubby Chub, on the Nothing Was The Same deluxe version bonus track, "The Motion:" ("And my dog Chubby Chub, that's my nigga from the way").
  • We often point out bad grammar in songs , so here we'll give Drake credit for his proper use of "furthest." A common mistake is the use of "farthest" in this situation, which would indicate a literal distance (Hawaii is the state farthest away from California). When Drake raps about being the "furthest thing from perfect," he is indicating a figurative distance, and "furthest" is correct.

    I, I'm a one way motorway
I'm the one that drives away
    Then follows you back home
    I, I'm a street light shining
I'm a wild light blinding bright
    Burning off alone

It's Times Like These you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

    I, I'm a new day rising
    I'm a brand new sky
To hang the stars upon tonight
    I am a little divided
Do I stay or run away
    And leave it all behind?

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again

    Times Like These
  • At the time, Dave Grohl called this "The best song I've ever written." The rousing track became a live favorite for the band, and one of five songs in their set when they performed at the Live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium in London, to a crowd of about 80,000.
  • The song finds Dave Grohl at a crossroads, but confident he will find the right path. The One by One sessions were a slog, and they made him question the band's future:

    I am a little divided
Do I stay or run away
    And leave it all behind?

But then he assures himself that these trials are for the best, as he will emerge stronger:

It's times like these you learn to live again
  • The Foo Fighters performed this song on the February 22, 2003 episode of Saturday Night Live. During the performance, Jim Carrey ran onto the stage, strummed his leg like a guitar, and then dove offstage.
  • This song was used at some of George W. Bush's presidential campaign rallies in 2004. Dave Grohl never wanted to get involved in politics, but since he despised Bush, he decided to campaign for Bush's rival in the election, John Kerry.

"I was personally offended that George Bush was using 'Times Like These,'" Grohl said. "I know what I'm singing about and it basically mirrored what John Kerry's campaign was trying to represent.

Stirred into action, Grohl joined Kerry on some of his campaign stops, typically performing some acoustic songs before Kerry spoke. The experience had a profound effect on Grohl and inspired many of the songs that would end up on the next Foo Fighters album, In Your Honor which was named in tribute to Kerry.

    I Got A Car Lyrics

She was leaning on a rail in a cotton dress
Summer tanned pretty, little perfect mess
With a story that could only be anybody's guess
And I was thinking that I probably didn't stand a chance
But I rolled up my sleeves, walked up and I said
Hey, I don't know you but I'd kinda like a shot
She said, I saw you comin' over, I already thought it over
    And OK, so now what

And I said, well I Got A Car, she said, there's something
At least it's a start, I said, it's better than nothing
I ain't in no hurry but I'm ready when you are
And she said, where do you think all this is going
I said, there ain't no way of knowing
I guess I hadn't thought it through that far
    But I got a car

So, we let the wheels turn and the windows down
We let ourselves go all the way through town
She never said stop and I never asked her why
We drove into the night, when outta nowhere
She said, I'd give anything to never go back there
And I kinda wish this day would never end
She said, I could use a change but I don't even know where

And I said, well I got a car, she said, there's something
At least it's a start, I said, it's better than nothing
I ain't in no hurry but I'm ready when you are
And she said, where do you think all this is going
I said, there ain't no way of knowing
I really hadn't thought it through that far
And I can't promise you the moon and stars
    But I got a car

We got lost in the miles, lost track of the days
'Til we finally found a stopping place
When the doctor's said, you know what's on the way?
And we found ourselves in a little white house
One Sunday morning, rain pouring down
She said, I think it's time but all the lines are out

And her eyes teared up and she said, what are we gonna do now?
And I said, well I got a car, she said, there's something
You think it'll start, I said, it's already running
Got your things in the back and I'm ready when you are
She said, are you sure it'll get us where we're goin'?
I said, if there's one thing I know girl, it's gotten us this far
And I don't mean to hurry but I'm ready when you are

    I Got A Car
  • This circle-of-life cut revolving around a car was penned by Tony Douglas and Keith Gattis. Strait explained that he was pitched the song by his son, Bubba. "The way I found it was, my son, one of his rodeo buddies… had given Bubba a CD," he said. "So, I took it home and I laid it on the coffee table, and it sat there for two or three weeks."

"He asked me about it one day," Strait continued, "and I said, 'Naw, I haven't heard it yet, but I will when I get back home.' So, I got it and stuck it in the player and started listening to it. This song was on there, along with a couple of others. 'Sittin' on the Fence' was on there also, I believe. I said, 'Hey man! This guy is a good writer. I want to hear more of his stuff.' Bubba was emailing back and forth with him. He kept sending me more and more stuff. That's how I got 'Blue Melodies,' 'I Got a Car' and 'Sittin' on the Fence.'"

You're here where you should be
Snow is falling as the carols sing
    It just wasn't the same
    Alone on Christmas day
    Presents, what a beautiful sight
Don't mean a thing if you ain't holding me tight
    You're all that I need
    Underneath the Tree
    Tonight

    I'm gonna hold you close
    Make sure that you know
    I was lost before you
    Christmas was cold and grey
    Another holiday alone to celebrate
But then one day everything changed
    You're all I need
    Underneath the tree

You're here where you should be
Snow is falling as the carols sing
    It just wasn't the same
    Alone on Christmas day
    Presents, what a beautiful sight
Don't mean a thing if you ain't holding me tight
    You're all that I need
    Underneath the tree

I found, what I was looking for
A love that's meant for me
    A heart that's mine completely
Knocked me right off my feet
And this year I will fall
    With no worries at all
'Cause you are near and everything's clear
    You're all I need
    Underneath the tree

You're here where you should be
Snow is falling as the carols sing
    It just wasn't the same
    Alone on Christmas day

  • This Phil Spector-sounding song is an optimistic tune that was written by Clarkson with her frequent collaborator, the hit songwriter/producer Greg Kurstin. The song was released as the lead single from the singer's first Christmas album, Wrapped In Red.
  • This isn't the first time that Clarkson has covered holiday music. She recorded the Christmas songs "Oh Holy Night" and "My Grown Up Christmas List" on the compilation American Idol: The Great Holiday Classics. Also, the Texas native's version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" reached the #93 position on the Hot 100 in 2011, and she lent her voice to Blake Shelton's "Cheers, It's Christmas" the following year.

And we say back way to all the trouble makers
Better fix up your brains because you are the biggest fakers
Come in the place better know who you are
    Self defence is no offence
The scales of justice are weighed down on one side
Freemasons on the case you know you're gonna get a rough ride
Hold tight even if you know your rights
It's just a piece of paper unless you're prepared to fight

For ten years one hell of a long time
To rot in a cell when you've committed no crime
Another innocent man forced to carry the can
    Free Satpal Ram
    Free Satpal Ram
    Another innocent man
    Whose word against who?
    Whose word against who?
    The degenerate crew
Out on the town thought they had something to prove
Self defence - only offence - had to protect himself from all the murdering fools
Cutting remarks on account of his race
A plate to his chest and a glass to his face
An Asian fights back can't afford to be meek
With your back against the wall you can't turn the other cheek

And its back way to all the trouble makers
Better fix up your brain because you're the biggest fakers
Come in the place better know who you are
    Free Satpal Ram
    Another innocent man

    Birmingham six
    Bridgewater four
Crown prosecution totting up the score
    Kings Cross two
    Guildford four
Winston Silcott - man how many more ?
Satpal attacked in a restaurant by racists
Now the brother's been locked up on a life time basis
Convicted of murder but what's never mentioned
Self defence was his only intention

ADF once again taking to the stand
Witness the jailing of an innocent man
Kicking up a fuss because it could happen to us
Time to join in the fight back
    Because enough is enough
And it's back way to all the trouble makers

    Free Satpal Ram
  • This track tells the story of a controversial murder case, that of Satpal Ram, a Birmingham Asian who was jailed for life in June 1987 after defending himself against a racially motivated attack by a group of white men. At least that is the story that was parroted by Ram's supporters including Asian Dub Foundation, the British band Primal Scream, and most of the British media. The truth though is rather different. Satpal Ram stabbed a stranger in a drunken frenzy in an Indian restaurant in November 1986. His victim, Clarke Pearce, had asked for the music to be turned down; Ram objected and stabbed Pearce in the back with a flick knife - an illegal weapon - gloated over him as he lay dying, then fled the scene of the crime with the murder weapon still in his hand. The victim's elder sister and his fiancé were present at the time of the murder, and both testified at Ram's trial.
  • Ram appealed his murder conviction twice; his second appeal was dismissed in a strongly worded judgment by Lord Justice Beldam in November 1995, but in June 2002, the lies of Ram's supporters finally paid off, and he was paroled still protesting his innocence, and vowing to fight on to clear his name. Alas, he soon reverted to type. In May the following year his life licence was revoked following allegations of assault and criminal damage, and he remained unlawfully at large until he was arrested in April 2005, assaulting two police officers in the course of his detention.

    And opened up my eyes

    Now You wear the scars
    You wear the scars

    At Your name
    Every knee will bow
    Every voice will shout

    You alone
    Conquered the grave
    You are the way
    You alone
    Jesus, You alone

    You Alone
  • This is the first single to be released from Kutless' eighth studio album. The track has a straightforward message. "Our song 'You Alone' is meant to lift up and glorify the name of God," said the band. "As we look through the Bible, we see many examples of Heavenly worship, which all center around the theme that God is deserving of recognition, majesty, honor, and praise. Through the process of writing this record, we feel that God has been showing us our purpose in leading the body of Christ in worship. The name of Jesus is mighty and powerful. Great is the LORD, ruler of all!"

    Pulling Teeth Lyrics

    I'm all busted up
    Broken bones and nasty cuts
    Accidents will happen
But this time I can't get up
She comes to check on me
Making sure I'm on my knees
    After all she's the one
Who put me in this state

    Is she ultra violent?
    Is she disturbed?
I better tell her that I love her
Before she does it all over again
    Oh God, she's killing me!!!

    For now I lie around
Hell that's all I can really do
She takes good care of me
Just keep saying my love is true

    Is she ultra violent?
    Is she disturbed?
I better tell her that I love her
Before she does it all over again
    Oh God, she's killing me!!!

Looking out my window for someone that's passing by
No one knows I'm locked in here
    All I do is cry

    For now I lie around
Hell that's all I can really do
She takes good care of me
Just keep saying my love is true

    Pulling Teeth
  • This song is a tongue-in-cheek look at an abusive relationship. Billie Joe wrote it around an inside joke the band had with bassist Mike Dirnt after he was sent to the emergency room for injuries resulting from a pillow fight with his girlfriend at the time. Around the time of Kerplunk! they were at a friends house having a pillow fight when Mike ran around a corner and hit his head on a low ceiling beam. He fell backwards and broke both of his elbows.
  • The title itself is a further play on that inside joke. Metallica had a song on their Kill 'Em All album titled "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth." Mike's girlfriend who the song is loosely based on was named Anastasia, so they kept the "Pulling Teeth" from the Metallica track for the title. Mike eventually married her in 1996 and had 1 child with her; they have since divorced.

    Margaret on the Guillotine Lyrics

    The kind people
    Have a wonderful dream
    Margaret on the Guillotine
    Cause people like you
    Make me feel so tired
    When will you die?
    When will you die?
    When will you die?
    When will you die?
    When will you die?

    And people like you
Make me feel so old inside
    Please die

    And kind people
    Do not shelter this dream
    Make it real
    Make the dream real
    Make the dream real
    Make it real
    Make the dream real
    Make it real

    Margaret on the Guillotine
  • This song controversially described the death of Margaret Thatcher as a "wonderful dream." Morrissey recalled in his 2013 autobiography that the lyrics so concerned the authorities that Special Branch brought the singer in for questioning to determine whether or not he was actually a threat to the Prime Minister. After about an hour of questions, he signed some autographs and left.

    Visions Of Johanna Lyrics

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these Visions Of Johanna that conquer my mind

In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain
And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the "D" train
We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight
Ask himself if it's him or them that's insane
Louise, she's all right, she's just near
She's delicate and seems like the mirror
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
    That Johanna's not here
The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place

Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously
He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously
And when bringing her name up
He speaks of a farewell kiss to me
He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all
Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall
    How can I explain?
It's so hard to get on
And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn

Inside the museums, infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
    See the primitive wallflower freeze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeez, I can't find my knees"
Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel

The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him
Sayin', "Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him"
    But like Louise always says
"Ya can't look at much, can ya man?"
As she, herself, prepares for him
And Madonna, she still has not showed
We see this empty cage now corrode
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed
The fiddler, he now steps to the road
He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed
On the back of the fish truck that loads
    While my conscience explodes
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain

    Visions Of Johanna
  • Dylan (from Rolling Stone magazine): "It's easier to be disconnected than connected. I've got a huge hallelujah for all the people who're connected, that's great, but I can't do that."
  • Al Kooper, who was a prolific session musician, played the Hammond B3 organ. Kooper went on to become a successful producer and worked on some of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most famous tracks.
  • Dylan wrote this song while he was dating folk singer Joan Baez, but was falling in love with his first wife Sara.
  • In her 1975 song "Winds of the Old Days," Joan Baez seems to be making the case that she is Johanna. Sample lyrics: "A decade flew past her and there on the page, she read that the prince had returned to the stage," "Most of the sour grapes are gone from the bough, ghosts of Johanna will visit you there."
  • In their June 1997 issue, Mojo magazine named this one of their 100 Greatest Psychedelic Classics. Jon Savage wrote of the song: "As early as 1963's 'Lay Down Your Weary Tune,' Dylan was exploring the egoless surrender to the universe that would characterise the first, benign phase of psychedelia. From 1965 on, his gnomic, gnostic utterances laid down the parameters for what would follow, as The Beatles, The Byrds and The Rolling Stones fell under his spell. Dylan issued disclaimers - "I never have and never will write a drug song... It's just vulgar," he exclaimed on the last night of his 1966 world tour - but this 'Visions Of Johanna,' taken from the night before, has the infinitesimal focus of acid-time compression."
