Rusty Cage

This Chris Cornell penned song was released as the third single from Soundgarden's third studio album, Badmotorfinger. The song became an instant hit peaking at #41 in the UK and also gained considerable airtime on American alternative rock radio stations.

Guitarist Kim Thayil said in Guitar School, May 1994: "The tuning on that song was pretty nutty. It's recorded with a wah wah in the low position used as a filter. That was the first time we did anything like that. It was Chris's idea; he wanted to get that weird tone that you can't really dial in on an amp. But if you use the wah wah as a filter, it gets an incredibly weird sound. And if you listen to that riff, especially if you've heard the original demos of it, it almost sounds backward."

The song was covered by Johnny Cash on his 1996 album, Unchained, which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. Asked by The Irish Times why he thought Cash covered the song, bassist Ben Shepherd replied: "Probably because they're bad-ass, truthful, lyrics. Chris is a great writer and Johnny could probably relate to that. Johnny always talked about, if you read his books, how a singer has to sound like they're telling the truth. It's all about the truth. If you mean it then it sounds right. If you don't mean it it's a schlock thing (and) you tell it a mile away."

The composer/bandleader Hoagy Carmichael wrote this after giving up his law career in 1927 and first recorded it that year with his orchestra as a Jazz number. According to legend, Carmichael came up with the song when he went for a walk under the stars and started thinking about former girlfriends.

Carmichael's instrumental version did pretty well, and two years later, Mitchell Parish added lyrics and Carmichael reworked the song as a slow ballad. The bandleader/saxophonist Isham Jones recorded this new arrangement, which became the first of many hit records of the tune. The song became a Big Band standard, with just about every prominent bandleader and singer of the '30s and '40s performing it, making it one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century.

Originally published with a 2-word title ("Star Dust"), this classic song incorporates a timeless theme: the solace of dreams when overwhelmed by heartbreak. If you can't be with your love, at least you can dream about her.

Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby both released renditions of this song in 1931. Once the Swing era took hold, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey all recorded the song. In 1940, Dorsey recorded a new version with the vocal group The Pied Pipers, which featured a young Frank Sinatra.

Billy Ward and the Dominoes took the song to #12 US in 1957, and that same year Nat King Cole's version hit #79 US and #24 UK. Cole's version proved most enduring and was revived when it was featured in the 1993 movie Sleepless In Seattle. Other charting versions of the song in the US were recorded by Frank Sinatra as a solo artist (#98, 1962) and Nino Tempo & April Stevens (#32, 1964).

In 1978, Willie Nelson released a Country version, using it as the title track to his album.

Bette Midler considers this her favorite song, with the lyrics, "And now the purple dusk of twilight time steals across the meadows of my heart" her favorite words.

Paul McCartney is also a big fan: he said in his Club Sandwich newsletter that it is the song he most wished he had written.

Ringo Starr's first post-Beatles album, Sentimental Journey, is a collection of standards that includes this song (arranged by Paul McCartney).

This is one of HIM's more popular songs, going to #1 in Finland. Ville Valo tells us that the song was composed once they had the album essentially completed, which is a fruitful time for the band since they suddenly find themselves more relaxed. "Once all that stuff is out of your system - meaning recorded and produced - then all of a sudden you feel a breath of fresh air, this sense of relief," he said. "These days when we're booking studio time, I like to leave an extra week at the very end in case we have some ridiculously good idea that we still want to try out."

Paradise (What About Us?)

The title track of Within Temptation's Paradise (What About Us?) EP finds frontwoman Sharon den Adel duetting with classically trained Finnish rock diva and former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen. Said Den Adel: "When we had written the first version of 'Paradise' and listened back to the demo we'd recorded and the epic power of the song, we thought of Tarja instantly. How well this track would fit her classical voice and how extra special it would be if we sang it together. The more we thought about this wild idea, the more excited we got about it!"

She continued "Of course I didn't know what to expect from Tarja, as we'd never actually met in person 'till June this year. Our first encounter was via a Skype call we'd set-up to discuss the collaboration and we immediately clicked, not only creatively but personally. After we'd spoken, it felt completely natural that we would do this together!"

According to its press release, the central theme of the song and its accompanying music video is that only constructive co-operation can lead to creation. To establish a new paradise, rising from the ashes of the old, we must work together.

The lyrics were inspired by a speech given by retired four-star general Peter van Uhm of the Royal Netherlands Army on May 4, 2013 (Dutch Liberation Day) next to the Dutch National Monument. "His speech made a deep impression on us," recalled Adel. "His message being that the creation of a better world is only possible when you don't think about 'yourself' or 'them' but just think about 'us.'"

Christmas Canon

The base of "Christmas Canon" is Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D major, which has been sneaking its way into Pop music for years. The Bee Gees borrowed the harmony for their debut hit "Spicks And Specks" in 1966 and, according to music producer Pete Waterman, Kylie Minogue's 1988 single "I Should Be So Lucky" was also based on Canon in D.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra added new lyrics and melodies to the piece for "Christmas Canon" with strings and piano accompaniment for a traditional sound. Later, they added their signature rock edge for "Christmas Canon Rock" on 2004's The Lost Christmas Eve.

The marriage of Classical music and Rock is what Trans-Siberian Orchestra is all about, but it's not always easy under the rapid-fire pacing of their perfectionist producer/lyricist Paul O'Neill. TSO's Jon Oliva told us :

"He'll say, 'Here's Brahms' Piano Concerto in A minor, write something to go along with it.' I've never even heard that - what are you talking about? Brahms' 48 Concerto Symphony to the 10th power, all right. You'd better give me a day on this, Paul."

"I can't read music," Oliva added. "So I have to listen to this stuff. You get the track, they burn the track and the thing's 37 minutes long. I'm like, 'Where do you want me to write what? It's already a half hour long!' 'No, I want you to do something between this riff and this riff and make it hard rock.' I'm like, 'You'd better give me a day on this.'"

This song originated on Savatage's Dead Winter Dead album in 1995 but became an important hit for the band's side project, Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Because Savatage had the well-earned reputation of being an '80s Heavy Metal band, many radio stations were reluctant to play the Christmas offering. In our interview with Jon Oliva , who wrote the song with Robert Kinkel and Paul O'Neill, he recalled: "They never even listened to it. You know how we know? Because the next year we sent the exact same song and put a Christmas tree on the cover and an angel and called it 'Trans-Siberian Orchestra,' and it was #1 on 500 radio stations."

Under the Savatage moniker, "12/24" peaked at #65 on the Billboard Hot 100. The TSO name brought it to #49 on the same chart a year later and also to #29 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. It's featured on TSO's debut album, Christmas Eve and Other Stories.

This song tells the story of a Sarajevo-born cellist (Vedran Smailovic) who returns to his homeland to find it in ruins after the Bosnian War. TSO lyricist Paul O'Neill explained to Christianity Today: "I think what most broke this man's heart was that the destruction was not done by some outside invader or natural disaster—it was done by his own people. At that time, Serbs were shelling Sarajevo every night. Rather than head for the bomb shelters like his family and neighbors, this man went to the town square, climbed onto a pile of rubble that had once been the fountain, took out his cello, and played Mozart and Beethoven as the city was bombed."

TSO created an instrumental medley of "Carol of the Bells" and "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen" to fit the story. "The orchestra represents one side, the rock band the other, and single cello represents that single individual, that spark of hope," O'Neill said.

"Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" was used in the "Christmas Wishes" episode of The Office (US version) in 2011.

Fear

The lyrics on Blue October's seventh studio album, Sway, were penned by frontman Justin Furstenfeld in an upbeat frame of mind after conquering a crippling alcohol addiction. This song is about the main thing he learned once he got sober. Furstenfeld explained to Artist Direct : "The reason I did use and drink was because of fear. The reason I kept myself from being happy is I was scared of the outcome. In the last year and a half, I learned there's no room for 'Fear.' When I hear that song, it wraps up the last seventeen years of my life. I found what I've been looking for."
