Best I Ever Had Lyrics

Melt Antarctica, savin' Africa
I failed algebra and I misused some times
We're at war again, save the world again
You can all join in, but you can't smoke inside

You said "Take me home, I can't stand this place
'Cause there's too many hipsters and I just can't relate"
You're my neon gypsy, my desert rain
You're my "Helter Skelter", oh how can I explain that

You're the Best I Ever Had
And I'm trying not to get stuck in my head
But I read that soda kills you and Jesus saves
On the bathroom wall where I saw your name
You're the best I ever had
I won't be the same

Night sky full of drones, this neighborhood of clones
I'm looking at the crowd and they're staring at their phones
They groom the coast line here, the sun will disappear (Oh God!)
And maybe once a year, I think they'll clean my car

Caught my reflection, drop the call
I've been medicated with cigarettes and alcohol
I got vertigo, no I can't see straight
I got obligations though I'm usually late but

You're the best I ever had
And I'm trying not to get stuck in my head
But I think I dropped my wallet in Santa Fe
Lost the only picture I had of you that day and
You're the best I ever had
I won't be the same

Hey West Virginia, hey North Dakota
I think I love you, but don't even know you
Hey Massachusetts, hey Minnesota
I think I love you, but don't even know you
Hey Carolina, hey Oklahoma
I think I love you, but don't even know you
Hey Alabama, hey California
I think I love you, but don't even know you

You're the best I ever had (you're the best I ever had)
And I'm trying not to get stuck in my head
But I passed the longest sign on the interstate
Saying "Find someone before it gets too late"
You're the best I ever had (you're the best I ever had)
I won't be the same

Hey West Virginia, hey North Dakota (Oh why, oh why)
I think I love you, but don't even know you (I won't be the same)
Hey Massachusetts, hey Minnesota (you're the best I ever had)
I think I love you, but don't even know you (I won't be the same)

Yeah, I won't be the same

Best I Ever Had
  • This tribute to life on the road was released as the lead single from Gavin DeGraw's fifth studio album. Co-written by the singer and Boys Like Girls frontman Martin Johnson (who also produced the track), the song moves to the rhythm of a brisk stomping beat. "I'm sitting in the room with Martin Johnson, the guy I'd been writing with before who's really gifted, and he's like, 'Hey man, what do you think of this track?'" DeGraw recalled to Billboard magazine. "He just starts playing this jangle-y, uptempo kind of thing, which ultimately was the foundation for 'Best I Ever Had.'" The song was released to radio and digital retailers on June 18, 2013.
  • The song's official music video finds McGraw getting close to the 2013 Miss USA titleholder, Erin Brady.
  • The song started as a crazy drum beat in the studio over which Johnson encouraged DeGraw to adopt a stream of consciousness approach for his vocals. He began to sing "Melt Antarctica, savin' Africa. I failed algebra" and Johnson added, "And I miss you sometimes." "I laughed because it was so off the wall, but at the same time that was the stroke that it needed," DeGraw told Radio.com . "The nature of the song, it almost didn't matter what we said. We had the freedom to say anything because the style and sound of the song, there's a bit of a beatnik Americana thing happening in there even though it's been modernized. It lets you be a little bit nutty as far as being a lyricist is concerned. It is very freeing."

    Marlene Lyrics

    Marlene
Marlene, you're the prettiest girl I've ever seen
Do you care for me at all
    Marlene, I care for you
And I just don't care who knows it

And I guess that means that I love you
    Marlene
Marlene, who'd believe that you're only seventeen
I'm in trouble if your folks get mean
    And if they do
Then I don't care if they bust me

And I guess that means that I love you
    I don't need no fantasies
    Just one thing I need
I you could make it here, Marlene
    Dear Marlene, Marlene
Marlene, when I think that it all is just a dream
I remember that your eyes are green
    And mine are blue
They will always see each other

And I guess that means that I love you
    I don't need realities
    Just one thing I need
If you could make it here Marlene
    Dear Marlene, Marlene
Marlene, I'm depending on you now

    Marlene
  • Todd Rundgren wrote this song about his girlfriend (some would say groupie) Marlene Pinkard. Later known as Marlene Morrow, she was Playboy's Miss April of 1974. The writer and photographer Paul Zollo discovered in 2006 that she was homeless, living on the streets of Hollywood, and using the name Persephone.
  • When Rob Steen asked Rundgren if we was still dating Marlene when he wrote this song, Rundgren replied: "It was just around the same time. There would have been a lot of miserable material about her had I not got out of that state of mind."
  • In the Something/Anything? liner notes, Rundgren wrote of this song: "A shiver and a sigh."

    The Card Cheat Lyrics

There's a solitary man crying, hold me
    It's only because he's a-lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long!

If he only had time to tell of all of the things he planned
With a card up his sleeve, what would he achieve?
    It means nothing!

To the opium den and the barroom gin
In the Belmont chair playing violins
The gambler's face cracks into a grin
As he lays down the king of spades

    But the dealer just stares
There's something wrong here, he thinks
The gambler is seized and forced to his knees
    And shot dead

    He only wanted more time
    Away from the darkest door
But his luck it gave in
As the dawn light crept in
And he lay on the floor

From the Hundred Year War to the Crimea
With a lance and a musket and a Roman spear
To all of the men who have stood with no fear
In the service of the King

Before you met your fate be sure you
    Did not forsake your lover
    May not be around anymore

There's a solitary man crying, hold me
    It's only because he's a-lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long!

    The Card Cheat
  • Lead singer Joe Strummer, who wrote the lyrics to the song, noted in promotional interviews for the album that he had been reading the poetry of Sylvia Plath, and the darkness of her writing could well have been an influence on the dark lyrics of "The Card Cheat."
  • The song was recorded late in the London Calling sessions, and by this time according to reports, producer Guy Stevens was so inebriated he was unable to work most of the time, so guitarist Mick Jones was producing the recordings along with engineer Bill Price. It was Mick's idea to have everything in this song double-tracked, to create a Phil Spector-style "wall-of-sound" feel to the instrumentation ("That's the secret, two of everything" he said in a 1991 interview).
  • The lyrics continue the same themes of an outsider in society as other songs that proceeded it on the album, notably "Jimmy Jazz," "Rudie Can't Fail" and "Wrong 'Em Boyo." Contrasting to those other songs, however, "The Card Cheat" is incredibly downbeat, with the jaunty piano tunes contrasting with the lyrics about a lonely gambler finally running out of luck and being murdered in a card game ("The gambler is seized and forced to his knees and shot dead. He only wanted more time away from his darkest door, but his luck, it gave in").
  • The song features a horn section written and performed by The Irish Horns, who recorded all of the horn instrument sections on the London Calling album.
  • Due to the complexity of the backing track compared to the band's very spartan stage show, the song was never performed live by the Clash.

    El Coyote Lyrics

In the town of Reynosa, there's a beautiful river
That shines in the Mexico sun.
There are boats and they cross from one side to the other,
At dusk when the hot day is done.
From there to Acuña to Del Rio, Texas,
You valley up through San Antone.
With the pesos I've saved up for years then I'll trade
For the chance to send dollars back home.

    Coyote, coyote, qué hiciste cabron?
Coyote, man what have you done?
You took all our money and left us to die
In the heat of the South Texas sun.
    Coyote, qué hiciste cabron?

He steps out of the shadows, he won't look in my eyes
His hand's out to take all I've got.
He says that he's smuggled a thousand good men
And he says that he's never been caught.
So with seventeen other, braceros like cattle
Packed in for that long final ride.
In the semi-truck crossing the border it's dark,
And it's hot as an oven inside.

    Coyote, coyote, qué hiciste cabron?
Coyote, man what have you done?
You took all our money and left us to die
In the heat of the South Texas sun.
    Coyote, qué hiciste cabron?

The braceros are asking in whispers,
Why the truck stopped in the heat of the day?
At first sign of trouble, he's left us all there
By the road and he's walking away.

    Coyote, coyote, qué hiciste cabron?
Coyote, man what have you done?
You took all our money and left us to die
In the heat of the South Texas sun.
    Coyote, qué hiciste cabron?

    El Coyote
  • Guy Clark penned this account of a crooked smuggler of people over the Mexican border with Noel McKay of Texan Alt-Country duo, The McKay Brothers. "'El Coyote' was about a situation that really happened," said Clark. "Something spooked the driver, and he just pulled over to the side of the road, left 18 workers in the Texas sun, and walked off. Locked them in, and they all died. I just thought it was something that needed to be addressed. And Noel speaks really good Spanish, been around that all his life, too. So I presented him the idea of writing that song, and he was very helpful."

    It's Now Or Never Lyrics

    It's Now Or Never
    Come hold me tight
    Kiss me my darling
    Be mine tonight
    Tomorrow will be too late
    It's now or never
    My love won't wait

    When I first saw you
    With your smile so tender
    My heart was captured
    My soul surrendered
    I'd spend a lifetime
    Waiting for the right time
    Now that your near
The time is here at last

    It's now or never
    Come hold me tight
    Kiss me my darling
    Be mine tonight
    Tomorrow will be too late
    It's now or never
    My love won't wait

    Just like a willow
    We would cry an ocean
    If we lost true love
    And sweet devotion
    Your lips excite me
    Let your arms invite me
    For who knows when
    We'll meet again this way

    It's now or never
    Come hold me tight
    Kiss me my darling
    Be mine tonight
    Tomorrow will be too late
    It's now or never
    My love won't wait
    It's now or never
    My love won't wait

    It's Now Or Never
  • This Elvis classic borrows the chord progression as well as the melody from the Italian song "O Sole Mio," which was first recorded by Giuseppe Anselmi in 1907. Mario Lanza popularized the song, and Tony Martin released the first English translation as "There's No Tomorrow" in 1949.
  • When Elvis was in the US army, he was stationed in Germany and heard "O Sole Mio." When he was discharged, he asked his record company to write an English translation for him, a task that went to songwriters Aaron Schroeder and Wally Gold.
  • Barry White heard this song in 1960 when he was in jail for stealing tires. The song had such an impact on White, that it convinced him to pursue a career in music.
  • This was one of seventeen songs written by songwriter and producer Aaron Schroeder for Elvis. Others include "Stuck on You" and "A Big Hunk O' Love" but this was the biggest hit that he penned for The King. Another familiar tune to many that he wrote was the theme song for the TV series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!
Schroeder also discovered, managed and directed the career of Gene Pitney and helped the young careers of acts like Jimi Hendrix and Barry White.
  • Bill Porter was an American audio engineer who helped shape the Nashville sound and recorded such stars as The Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison from the late 1950s through the 1970s. In one week of 1960, his recordings accounted for 15 of Billboard Magazine's "Top 100," a feat none have matched. He recalled one particular session with Elvis on April 3-4 1960, which included this song. "In those two days, we recorded 12 songs, two of which went to No 1," Porter remembered. "Elvis was having trouble with 'It's Now or Never' because he basically sang in the baritone range, and the end was in the tenor range. We recorded this song for at least seven or eight takes. At one point, I finally pushed the talkback button and said, 'EP, we can just do the ending. I can splice it on without doing the song all the way through again'. He answered me with, 'Bill, I'm gonna do it all the way through, or I'm not gonna do it at all!' So, we did it again. And, of course, he got it the way he wanted it."

    Whore Lyrics

I’m the girl you’ve been thinking about
The one thing you can’t live without
I’m the girl you’ve been waiting for
I’ll have you down on your knees
I’ll have you begging for more
You probably thought I wouldn’t get this far
You thought I’d end up in the back of a car
You probably thought that I’d never escape
I’d be a rat in a cage, I’d be a slave to this place
You don’t know how hard I fought to survive
Waking up alone when I was left to die
You don’t know about this life I’ve led
    All these roads I’ve walked
    All these tears I’ve bled

    So how can this be?
    You’re praying to me
As I look in your eyes
I know just what that means
I can be, I can be your everything

    I can be your Whore
I am the dirt you created
    I am your sinner
    And your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

I’m the one that you need and fear
Now that you’re hooked, it’s all becoming clear
That all your judgments that you placed on me
    Was a reflection of discovery
So maybe next time when you cast your stones
From the shadows of the dark unknown
You will crawl up from your hiding place
Take a look in the mirror
See the truth in your face

    So how can this be?
    You’re praying to me
As I look in your eyes
I know just what that means
I can be, I can be your everything

    I can be your whore
I am the dirt you created
    I am your sinner
    And your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

I am the dirt you created
    I am your sinner
    And your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me, you want me, you need me

Well I can be your whore
I am the dirt you created
    I am the sinner
    And your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

(And I can be your whore)
(And I can be your whore)
(And I can be your whore)
Let me tell you something baby

    Whore
  • Frontwoman Maria Brink told Steppin' Out magazine that despite its title, this is an empowering, beautiful song for women. She explained: "Everything that the word 'whore' means, that song rebels against. That song is sarcastic. It's kind of about learning how to let go of the power that we let other people hold over us with their words with their belittling. Nobody can control us, nobody has the power.... kind of freeing ourselves from the vulnerable, weak parts of us."

"When somebody calls you something demeaning or hurts you," Brink added, "we're the ones letting them hurt us by letting their words be that powerful. It's about letting go. If you listen to the words: I am the dirt you created. I am your sinner. I am your whore, but let me tell you something — you love me for everything you hate me for. It's all reverse psychology."
  • Brink created the term Women Honoring One Another Rising Eternally to give new meaning away from the derogatory connotation of the "whore" word. "This is an honest and raw movement that needs to be heard," she exclaimed. "The message behind this song is taking back control. It is about taking the power from a disgusting and degrading word and turning it back around on the accuser. It's about self-empowerment, love, and liberation."

Guitarist Chris Howorth added: "One of the best things about the song 'Whore' is all the feelings and thoughts that the word alone provokes, and that's great, but at the end of the day, it's just a word. The only power it really has is the power that we give it. It's really just about taking the power back from the word, and when you get past all the controversy of the word, you have a bombastic rock and roll song with crushing guitars and huge drums that will have you screaming whore at the top of your lungs!"
  • The song's voyeuristic music video was directed by longtime In This Moment videographer Robert Kley and set in prohibition-era New York. Maria Brink co-starred in the clip with Motionless in White vocalist Chris Motionless. "His look is so perfect for the dirty vintage feel of the video, and he was a perfect gentleman while being violated by me," said Brink.

"I knew how amazing placing the visual arts to 'Whore' would be when we wrote it, and I have been waiting to release this video since we recorded the song," she continued. "I am so passionate about the concepts and every single detail that goes into shooting a music video, and I created my own stimulating visual metaphor to make this - I am grateful to have worked with Robert Kley again, he always seems to help me bring what I see in my mind to life. 'Whore' is a song that pushes boundaries, and I needed the video to do the same. The song is about taking back control. It is about rising above and finding the power within ourselves. I hope everyone enjoys it!"

    Hard To Say Lyrics

The singer finished singing and she's walking out
    The singer sheds a tear
    Fear of falling out

And It's Hard To Say how I feel today
    For years gone by
    And I cried

It's hard to say that I was wrong
It's hard to say that I miss you
Since you've been gone it's not the same

    My worries weigh the world
How I used to be and everything
    (I'm so cold)
    Seems a plague in me

And its hard to say how I feel today
    For years gone by
    And I cried

It's hard to say that I was wrong
It's hard to say I miss you
Since you've been gone its not the same
Its hard to say I held my tongue
It's hard to say if only
Since you've been gone it's not the same

Worse than a lie you told a thousand times before
Worse than a fear it's the knife
And its hard to say how I feel today for years gone by and I cried
Its hard to say that I was wrong
It's hard to say I miss you
Since you've been gone it's not the same
It's hard to say I held my tongue

    Hard To Say
  • This song has a tragic side to it. Lead singer Bert McCracken wrote it about his girlfriend, who at the time and she was pregnant with his child. After the song was recorded, she died of a drug overdose, killing their unborn child as well. Before the tragedy, The Used were skeptical about putting it on the album, but when they found out what happened they had to put it on.

  • This is a fairly typical love song. Dave Grohl states, "It's almost like a Knack song, just a simple pop song."
  • Before Foo Fighters played this song on an MTV special, Grohl said: "That's a cute little love song about my wife."
  • Foo Fighters' first drummer, William Goldsmith, played drums in the slow intro to this song, as well as on "Doll" and the verses of "My Poor Brain" before he left the band. Dave Grohl played drums on the rest of the album.

    I'm thinking of that day
You gave me some that day
I fell in love that day

Picked me out a rose, stands by her man
She wants to party, she loves to dance
Won't raise me voice, won't raise my hand
Keep telling your story, I'll understand

    You can have my body
    You can have my money
You can have my soul if you want it too
    You've become a problem
But I don't want to solve it

    Took a lot of time
    See through my disguise
    Reverse the current, electrified
Kick me to the curb, I keep hanging on
You make me weak, but you make me strong

    You can have my body
    You can have my money
You can have my soul if you want it too
    You've become a problem

The world is mine as long as I’m with you

I fell in love that day
    Can't get enough that day
    I'm thinking of that day
You gave me some that day
I fell in love that day
    Can't get enough that day
    I'm thinking of that day

You gave me some that day
I fell in love that day
    Can't get enough that day
    I'm thinking of that day
You gave me some that day
I fell in love that day
    Can't get enough that day
    I'm thinking of that day

  • Thicke promises a woman on this '80s Disco-vibed track not only his money, but his very soul. The song was inspired by the romantic adventures that the singer has had with his wife, actress Paula Patton, in Paris.
  • Thicke revealed to Billboard magazine that the Blurred Lines album was a project aimed at giving listeners a way to ease their worries. "I think I just ended up making an escape album," he shared. "I never plan it, but I think I did my best to make my wife and I have a chance to escape every night, and I felt like that made for a great album."

    The Power Of Love Lyrics

    The whispers in the morning
    Of lovers sleeping tight
    Are rolling like thunder now
As I look in your eyes

I hold on to your body
And feel each move you make
Your voice is warm and tender
A love that I could not forsake

    'Cause I am your lady
    And you are my man
    Whenever you reach for me
I'll do all that I can

Lost is how I'm feeling lying in your arms
    When the world outside's too
    Much to take
That all ends when I'm with you

Even though there may be times
    It seems I'm far away
    Never wonder where I am
'Cause I am always by your side

    We're heading for something
    Somewhere I've never been
    Sometimes I am frightened
    But I'm ready to learn
    Of The Power Of Love

The sound of your heart beating
    Made it clear
Suddenly the feeling that I can't go on
    Is light years away

    The Power Of Love
  • This was the first ever million seller by a female soloist in Britain and the biggest selling single in UK in 1985. It held the record for the largest-selling single ever by a woman until Whitney Houston's 1992 smash "I Will Always Love You." At the time it held the record for the longest ever climb to no 1 in UK- 16 weeks.
  • Rush wrote this song along with Gunther Mende, Candy DeRouge and Mary Susan Applegate. The producer and songwriter David Foster, who helped her on her road to stardom, arranged the piece. The song was recorded in Germany, where Jennifer had relocated.
  • In the US Rush's version reached #57 but it was later a hit for Laura Branigan (#26 in 1987) and Celine Dion (#1 in 1994 and also #4 in the UK). A rival version by Australian duo Air Supply released the same time peaked at #68 on the Hot 100.
  • Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson chose this for their first dance at their 1986 wedding. Many less famous couples did as well.
  • Huey Lewis & The News and Frankie Goes To Hollywood also had Top-10 UK hits in 1985 with different songs called "The Power Of Love."
  • New Yorker Jennifer Rush (real name Heidi Stern) is the daughter of opera singer Maurice Stern. This was her first hit in the UK. Her only other UK top 20 hit was her follow up "Ring Of Ice," which reached #14. In 1987 she made the US top 40 with a duet with Elton John entitled "Flames Of Paradise."

    Millionaire Lyrics

The best things in life don't come with a price
Forget what they say cause I know they ain't right
All that I need is you
It is you it is you it is you

A walk in the park, a kiss in the dark
The way she looks back every time that we part
All that I need is you
It is you it is you it is you

    We could be broke
    But I couldn't care
    'Cause I've got it all
    When you're standing there

    You make me feel
    Like I'm a Millionaire
The moment I set my eyes on you girl
I'm like the richest guy in the world
    You make me feel
    Like I'm a millionaire

Maybe I'm blased, but you're just the finest
Girl that I've met I think you're priceless
All that I need is you
It is you it is you it is you

I'm not going to lie the money'd be nice
'Cause I could take you out every night
I'd spend it all on you
It is you it is you it is you

    We could be broke
    But I couldn't care
    'Cause I've got it all
    When you're standing there

    'Cause you make me feel
    Like I'm a millionaire
The moment I set my eyes on you girl
I'm like the richest guy in the world
    You make me feel
    Like I'm a millionaire

If money gets tight I'll be alright
As long as you're there, there by my side
    'Cause you make me feel
    Like a millionaire

    Oh oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh oh

    We could be broke
    But I couldn't care
    Cause I've got it all
    When you're standing there

    'Cause you make me feel
    Like I'm a millionaire
The moment I set my eyes on you girl
I'm like the richest guy in the world
    You make me feel
    Like a millionaire

  • This was released as the lead single from Scouting For Girls' Greatest Hits album on July 22, 2013. Asked by Digital Spy why the band chose this song to lead the collection, frontman Roy Strong replied: "It's because it sounded like it could be from one of our first records. It just felt like it summed up Scouting For Girls in a way. It's summery and uptempo - it kind of embodies everything we try to be."
