This is the first single from Sonata Arctica's eighth album Pariah's Child. Commented the band's frontman Tony Kakko: "'The Wolves Die Young' was pretty much born to be a single. And it is. It also paved the road for the rest of the album. Set a mood in a way. It just felt real good to start with. 2014 is a year of a wolf."

Pariah's Child marked the return of wolf-themed songs, which were absent in Sonata Arctica's previous album, Stones Grow Her Name. Kakko said: "Wolf is just once again a metaphor, for instance, for fear and processing it in your life. Fear make people do things. Or actually denying the fact that you fear something."

Kakko explained regarding the album's title and artwork: "As always, it's pretty hard coming up with a name for the new baby. I tried to approach it from many angles; how this is our eighth album and how easy it would be to abuse that fact. All the symbolism of figure eight, eternity and so on. But that just did not feel right, as it's been done so many times. Then I started to think how we'd in ways abandoned our 'totem animal,' the wolf and all what comes with the territory."

"As the music on the album is bowing more towards the 'old' Sonata, meaning more power metal-style elements and wolves in many of the songs in one form or another, it was clear we need a wolf on the cover," he added. "An abandoned wolf. A pariah. Or pariah's child, actually. The new generation to bring the old logo back."

The song's music video was filmed in January 2014 at Sibelius House in Lahti, Finland and was produced by Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company, who has previously worked with Lacuna Coil and In Flames amongst others.

Pariah's Child topped the album chart in Finland and also reached the Top 40 in various other European countries including Switzerland, Czech Republic, Austria and Germany.

Prince and Zooey Deschanel premiered a snippet of this duet during the 2014 post-Super Bowl episode of New Girl. Thanks to Purple One's appearance in the Fox comedy, it became the top-rated scripted telecast among the big four TV networks in three years, averaging nearly 26 million viewers.

The song was dropped as a single on March 18, 2014 via an agreement with major label Epic Records and L.A. Reid. It was the first time that Prince and the veteran executive had teamed up on a release.

Prince's appearance on New Girl also featured the Purple One dishing out relationship advice to Zooey Deschanel's Jess character. His guest role resulted after the Minneapolis superstar reached out to the show's producers. "He said, 'I'm a big fan. I'd love to do the show at some point in the future,'" said New Girl creator Liz Meriwether.

Deschanel is an accomplished vocalist as well as an actress and has teamed up with singer-songwriter M. Ward to release a series of albums under the moniker She & Him. However, prior to this duet, Deschanel's singing had previously never featured on New Girl (outside of the theme song). The Hollywood Reporter asked Meriwether whether having Prince there changed that? "It might, it might," she replied with a laugh.

"That was also definitely about trying to figure out what was within the world of the show, but it was just so fun to watch and shoot. We just felt, again, it was one of those moments where we're like, 'Well, let's just go for it.' I think we can come back from this without losing all of our integrity. Basically, it's just awesome to see."

The song was reworked in 2015 by Prince for his HITnRUN album.

Nobody to Love

Sigma is a duo consisting of Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie, who first met at Leeds University in 2006 at drum and bass nights. Once they had finished in Leeds, the pair relocated to London and formed their own record label, Life Recordings.

In 2010 Sigma hooked up with DJ Fresh to record "Lassitude." Released as the fifth single from Fresh's album Kryptonite it peaked at #98 on the UK Singles Chart.

Sigma released their debut single "Rudeboy" in December 2013 after signing with 3Beat. That song reached #56 on the UK Singles Chart.

This is Sigma's second single with 3Beat. Originally a bootleg remix of Kanye West's "Bound 2," it was released on January 24, 2014 for free download. After receiving support from major British radio stations the tune was reworked into an original track with Charlie Wilson's original vocal being covered by a session vocalist. The new version was dropped on April 6, 2014, topping the UK iTunes chart upon release.

It was the hook of "Bound 2" that drew Sigma to rework the tune. Joe Lenzie told Digital Spy : "We loved the sound of the piano chords and the Charlie Wilson vocal and we just thought that could really work as a drum and bass track."

"What we do when we have studio sessions is we spend a lot of time just listening to other stuff to try and see if we can get influence from different genres," he continued. "I think the fact that it was perfectly half speed for drum and bass as well that can be a big part of what's actually gonna work. You might hear something that's a great chord structure that you might think about remixing or whatever but if it's the wrong speed it just kind of kills the vibe."

So what does Kanye West think of Sigma's reworking of the song? Joe Lenzie said: "His management contacted us asking if we'd be prepared to somehow put together some exclusive VIP thing that he was gonna perform when he played at Wireless, but I think it was so last minute and we were in Miami at the time filming the video for 'Changing,' so we ended up just not doing it basically. But I'm assuming that that means that he must like it in one way I guess."

This was the first ever drum & bass track to hit 100 million YouTube views.

The Nights Song Chart

This folk-dance number features uncredited vocals by Nicholas "RAS" Furlong. The American songwriter and producer's first commercial success was in 2010, when he co-wrote Big Time Rush's "Count On You." He came to the attention of well-known songwriter, producer, and OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, who signed him to a publishing deal that year. Since then, Furlong has worked with such artists as Colbie Caillat ("All of You"), Jordin Sparks ("I Am Woman") and 5 Seconds of Summer ("Everything I Didn't Say").

This ode to living life began as a Furlong song written as an ode to his father, whom he told Yahoo had always encouraged him to pursue his creative dream and 'live a life I will remember." Furlong sent the original demo, titled "My Father Told Me", to Ash Pournouri, Avicii's manager, who recognized it had that same sense of euphoria which characterizes so much of the Swedish DJ's music. "It made absolute sense to work on it with RAS," Pournouri said, "to make it more 'us' and that's what I did. Then I presented it to Tim (Avicii) and sat with him to finish the production and music."

The video was produced, directed by, and stars "professional life liver" Rory Kramer (Dream Maker). The clip takes the track's message to heart by containing an action-packed recollection of Kramer's own life. Avicii said: "The video for 'The Nights' is awesome…it is EXACTLY what I feel when I play the song live and it is the perfect representation of the lyrics. It is so much fun."

The song was used to soundtrack SportsCenter's "Images of 2014" segment on ESPN, which recapped 2014's best moments in sports.

Shotgun Rider

This romantic song finds McGraw lovingly singing of never wanting another shotgun rider beside him. He just wants it to be with that special someone.

"I don't ever want to wake up, looking into someone else's eyes.
I don't want no other shotgun rider beside me, singing to the radio."

McGraw is singing of his wife, Faith Hill, whom he's been married to since 1996.

Does the title ring a bell? Back in 2007 McGraw recorded a duet with Faith Hill titled "Shotgun Rider" for his 2007 album Let It Go. This is an entirely different song.

McGraw premiered the song on February 19, 2014 during Jimmy Fallon's first week hosting of The Tonight Show. "I thought since it's Jimmy's first week we should give his audience something they can't get anywhere else," McGraw explained of his choice of a new tune. "It's been a great week for the show already, and I'm honored Jimmy invited me to the party!"

The song was written by Hillary Lindsey (Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take The Wheel"), Marv Green (Lonestar's "Amazed") and Troy Verges (Hunter Hayes' "Wanted").

McGraw said: "This is one of those songs that really paints a picture and sets a mood. In my mind, you look over and see the person that you love next to you sitting in the front seat, and you think, 'How good do I have it? Life is perfect.'"

The live video, which vacillates between black-and-white and color, was directed by Bennett Miller. The filmmaker is best known for directing acclaimed movies such as Capote (2005), Moneyball (2011), and Foxcatcher (2014). Previous music clips on Miller's resume include Bob Dylan's 2006 song "When the Deal Goes Down" and Scarlett Johansson's cut "Falling Down."

The clip was shot during McGraw's concert in New York City, which was part of the American Express Unstaged live stream music series.

The song was Tim McGraw's 25th country #1 and his first since "Felt Good On My Lips" topped the charts for three weeks in January 2011.

The first taste of music from AC/DC's Rock or Bust album was heard on September 27, 2014 when this aptly title song was used as part of a promotional trailer for TBS' American League baseball playoff coverage.

It wasn't the first time that the Australian rockers have been paired with the sport. The practice of using a heavy metal theme song to signal the entrance of a relief pitcher began in 1998, when the San Diego Padres started playing "Hell's Bells" to accompany Trevor Hoffman's taking the mound. Other pro players that have used the band's songs as their walk on music include Chad Billingsley, Adam Castro, Brendan Donnelly and Adam Dunn.

Rock Or Bust was the first AC/DC album in the band's history on which Malcolm Young doesn't appear. The band's former guitarist officially departed the band due to serious dementia and Stevie Young – nephew of the Young brothers – plays rhythm guitar on disc. He previously played with AC/DC during their 1988 Blow Up Your Video tour, while Malcolm Young was in rehab.

The song's performance-based music video was shot on October 3-4, 2014 with director David Mallet at Black Island Studios in Middlesex, England. Phil Rudd was unable to attend due to murder allegations which were later dropped. Bob Richards of Shogun filled in for him on drums, whilst Stevie Young took his uncle Malcolm's place. Mallet, who's been working with the band since their 1986 "You Shook Me All Night Long" clip said : "They are the same band they were – they have never come out with any pretence to be anything else than the best rock'n'roll band in the world."

"It's just as thrilling doing stuff with them now as it was all those years ago," he added. "That's because the records are just as good."

Rock or Bust was AC/DC's second album in a row with producer Brendan O'Brien, following Black Ice. This was the first time the band had used the same producer on consecutive albums since Mutt Lange helmed 1980's Back in Black and then For Those About to Rock.

Brian Johnston told Shaun Keaveny and Steve Lamacq of BBC Radio 6 Music about O'Brien's production. "Seven days a week, [Brendan] kept the adrenaline pumped all the time and he calls everybody by both their names. He never says 'Brian' or 'Angus.' He's, like, 'Angus Young. C'mon! I want you in here now. Let me get that magic from you. What do you got for me? Brian Johnson, downstairs now. Sing, baby, sing.' And it turned out wonderful. We were excited, and I think that's great, 'cause it comes through in songs. If you sing a song twelve times to get it right, you can tell. If you sing a song just a couple of times, like I did, you can tell it's fresh and it's new. And it was the same for Ang, and it was the same for everyone. [Brendan is] wonderful to work with."

Angus Young added: "He keeps everyone moving, so nobody's sitting around, going, 'What am I doing next?' Once we had a track down, he would go, 'Right. I'm gonna take this. I'm going down with Brian.' He'd get Brian up. 'While I am doing that, you guys get this track together and start knocking it out. Know all your bits.' So when he'd come back out, we would more or less [have] the track all in order and ready to go."

The video also shows clips of different sports, with an emphasis on female athletes in bikinis. Asked about the visual during an interview on the Australian television program, The Project, Angus Young said: "I've gotta admit. When they watched the Olympics, I'm always the one… I mean, I tuned in for the bikini beach volleyball. That's one of my favorite sports. If that wasn't on, I don't think I'd be watching."

This was used to soundtrack two commercials from Beats Electronics that aired in early 2015, promoting the Apple-owned company's Powerbeats2 Wireless and Studio Wireless headphones. AC/DC have rarely licensed its music for advertising, although the band have twice allowed "Back In Black" to be used: In 2011 they gave permission for the song's opening riff to feature during a commercial for Walmart, and a few years later, the track featured in a commercial for the 2015 Chevy Colorado pickup truck.

This raucous party anthem features Snoop Dogg. PSY told Billboard magazine that he immediately thought of the Californian rapper when the track's title popped into his head. "One day I wrote a hip-hop track and I thought about one catchy word," he said. "I was hungover and I thought about hangover, so I just recorded it right away. As soon as I got that hook part I thought about Snoop Dogg, because we all know he's hanging over every day."

Pasy added that securing Snoop's services proved simple. "I called him and said 'I'm PSY, do you know me?' and he was like 'What?'" he recalled. "I said 'can you feature on my song' and he's asking the title and I say 'Hangover.' And he said, 'Oh, I'm doing it.' So, that's how we met."

Fans got their first taste of the viral song on June 8, 2014 on a special prime time airing of Jimmy Kimmel Live! following the NBA Finals. The five-minute music video debuted immediately on YouTube following the song's preview.

The video features PSY and Snoop Dogg getting their drink on in various Korean locations. The visual was shot in January 2014 during Snoop Dogg's visit to South Korea, but it appears the Korean star waited for the summer hangover season to begin before releasing it. "Snoop and I both had only 18 hours," PSY told MTV News. "Snoop's calculation was 8 hours of shooting and 10 hours of partying. That's what he thought, and honestly, that's how I convinced him to bring him to Korea."

Amnesia

This regretful track was co-written by Good Charlotte's Benji and Joel Madden along with Louis and Michael Biancaniello and Louis' frequent songwriting partner, Sam Watters. It finds the guys unable to escape the memories of a failed relationship. The song was released alongside the pre-order of the 5 Seconds of Summer album on iTunes on June 23, 2014.

5 Seconds of Summer filmed a music video for the song in San Pedro and Los Angeles in late April 2014.

This anthemic number about leaving one's hometown was debuted during a commercial from RED and Bank of America that aired during the 2014 Super Bowl on February 2nd. RED is an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS, which was co-founded by Bono in 2006.

The song was made available as a limited-edition free download on iTunes for the first 24 hours after the Super Bowl commercial aired. For every download during that time, Bank of America promised to donate $1 (up to $2 million) to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in many of the world's poorest countries.

According to the band's website, by the time the free downloads ended the total sum raised was $3,138,470.

Bono told DJ Zane Lowe on his BBC Radio 1 show that the band thought back to their late '70s roots for this song and the rest of the album. "We listened to all this extraordinary music in the late '70s and started to think about those times and the things that made us who we were," the U2 frontman said. "We went back to why we wanted to be in a band in the first place. It opened up a whole valve for me writing and it was a dam burst of sorts. Punk rock and electronic [music] was when it started for us. We were listening to the Ramones and Kraftwerk and you can hear both of those things on 'Invisible.'"

This was originally an instrumental titled "Koala," which was released as a digital download on July 16, 2014 by Oliver Heldens in the Netherlands. The song peaked #42 in the producer's native country and also reached the Top 50 in Belgium.

Heldens released a vocal version of the song titled "Last All Night (Koala)" as a digital download on December 7, 2014. KStewart is the singer; in case you're wondering she isn't the Twilight actress, but a rising artist from London who is known to her family as Kate.

This is one of several tracks that was produced by Stefani's fellow Voice mentor and longtime collaborator Pharrell for her third solo album. Speaking with AMP radio's Carson Daly, the singer explained the story of the song. "He's like, 'I've got to play you this. I have to play you this,'" she said. "And so he plays me this song, and it's like magic. All it was was a beat and he was singing this melody on top and I just knew, that's it. That night, after shooting all day, we went in the studio all night long, stayed up till four in the morning, came back, got on set and then didn't finish."

Stefani added that completing the song was a challenge, given their busy schedules. "I met him in New York at my fashion show after working all week, and again, we went into the studio all night long," she said "didn't finish, but had these incredible songs coming out, so he came off of tour from Europe, met me in Miami, and we finished the song."

A snippet of the song was premiered by Gwen Stefani on AMP Radio on October 20, 2014. Pharrell then played the track as part of a live performance during the Odd Future Carnival in early November 2014. The singer-producer played the tune from his cell phone and explained that it addresses feminist issues.

Bumblebeee

This was the first track that Kasabian songwriter and guitarist Serge Pizzorno had for 48:13, having come up with a melody after going to Damon Albarn's Africa Express at Granary Square in London in September 2012. It was debuted by the band in Paris on April 30, 2014 at the first warm-up gig for their tour, and performed on Later…With Jools Holland on May 13, 2014. (thanks to The Kasabian Wiki .)

This call to arms is about Kasabian's connection with their fans. Pizzorno told NME: "I didn't have a name and my little boy Ennio called it 'Busy Bee.' I thought he said 'bumblebee' and thought, 'That's an amazing title.' Humans can't exist without bumblebees, and the song's about the fans and about us joining together and reaching a higher state with them - our fans are our bumblebees. Without them we're f---ed. without their pollinating flowers, we're done."

Asked by Q magazine to describe the song Pizzorno said: "It comes from the dance tent and how right they get it. I love that moment where you time something to perfection. It's such an art...when you get a crowd to a point and they're like, 'Just please f---ing do it.'"

"And Bumblebee is about the fans," he added. "Lyrically, I was so much more direct. So there's a moment in that song where I scream as loud as I can, 'Everybody go!'"

This synthy slow burner finds Brown attempting to convince a girl to embark on a relationship with him after meeting her in a club. The song was debuted by the singer at the 2014 BET Awards on June 29, 2014. It was his first performance after spending two and a half months in prison, as a result of getting involved in a fight outside a hotel in Washington DC.

Usher and Rick Ross both contribute verses to the track. Brown and Rozay had collaborated multiple times before on songs like DJ Khaled's "Take It To The Head" and the remix of his own tune "Deuces," but this was the first time he'd worked with Usher.

Jerk Ribs

The first single from Kelis' Food album, this was released on January 28, 2014, but it had previously been available to download for free from the singer's website since April 2013.

Food was produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. Speaking about the album's title, Kelis told HipHollywood : "We recorded in a house. It was Dave's house and he lives really close to me. It was a huge band, so people were there, and people are hungry. So we were eating, and recording, and singing, and eating some more and it was a lot of that. It wasn't the plan but that's just what it ended up being because that's just who we are. It was really natural and it felt really good and it tasted really good too."

The Food title is thematically appropriate to Kelis' own skills. She trained part-time as a chef in the late 2000s, eventually graduating from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school. Her Saucy and Sweet show premiered on The Cooking Channel on February 25, 2014.

The eclectic video sees Kelis posing for photoshoots and performing at a garden party. "This song is the cornerstone of my album," she told Time magazine. "So I wanted the video to look like my life, my love - back to the beginning."

This was originally named "Call On Me" before Kelis reverted to the random placeholder title Dave Sitek used to describe the song in the studio.

Let Me Down Gently

Singer Elly Jackson and producer Ben Langmaid decamped to a cottage in the Welsh countryside in 2011 to record their second album, Trouble in Paradise. "I'm not going to stop writing until we've got songs that can compete on the same level as 'In For The Kill' and 'Bulletproof,'" Jackson promised NME at the beginning of the writing process.

However Jackson found herself unable to sing falsetto. "All that would come out is the sound of air," she recalled glumly to Billboard magazine. "Nothing else."

Jackson was eventually diagnosed with residual muscle tension brought on by a form of performance anxiety and the problem was eventually solved with the aid of a confidence therapist. However progress remained slow and after a disagreement on the direction the record should take, Jackson and Langmaid parted ways in February 2012. Jackson carried on working on the set with producer Ian Sherwin, who'd engineered a portion of her debut.

A 2013 release was touted then failed to materialise. "You have to make the record that you want to make, when you want to make it," Jackson told Billboard. "However frustrating it might be for management, the label or even my own career, I'm not going to do something unless I feel that it's the best thing that I can possibly do."

Eventually a release date of July 7, 2014 was given and this breakup anthem was uploaded to La Roux's official SoundCloud on May 12, 2014 as the album's teaser track.

This was one of the songs that Jackson and Langmaid fell out over. "That was one of the ones Ben wasn't into," Jackson told The Observer, revealing that it almost never saw the light of day.

Jackson added that Langmaid refused to consider several songs she'd written, but the pair also drifted apart personally. "On the first record we would talk a lot and it became very emotional," she explained. "One of [Langmaid's] biggest roles was [being that person] I could go and talk to about lots of very personal stuff at length and then write about. But for want of a better way of saying it, I didn't need that any more. I felt I could do that with a number of people."

Seasons (Waiting On You)

Vocalist Samuel T Herring explained this song's meaning to Uncut magazine: "It's a song about the human experience," he said. "It's about love, letting go, learning from your mistakes and always feeling that pull – yearning for a certain love, as time goes by in seasons change."

Future Islands made their network television debut on March 3, 2014, when they performed this song on The Late Show with David Letterman. Letterman shouted "I'll take all of that you got!" following the band's passionate performance, creating a meme along the way.

"I remember before the show, looking at some of the previous Letterman performances online and how many views they got, and I was like, 'Oh that's cool, 5,000 views or so!'" Herring recalled to Billboard magazine. "None of us own TVs, and it's been forever since we watched a late show. We didn't really expect that it would become something, because nobody thought that performance would get that reaction."

Herring told Billboard magazine the story of the song. "I called the guys the day after we wrote it, probably jammed the tune out in an hour and a half," he recalled. "I went home and took a recording I had made on my computer, wrote the song in 30 minutes by chopping it up and then called the guys and was like, 'This is the best song we've ever written.'"

"Of course, by the time we wrote the rest of the songs (on the album), I was like, 'Maybe it's not the best song we've ever written," Herring added. "I love these other songs too.'"

Time Out magazine chose this as their best song of 2014. They said: "A stunning lovelorn lament, inescapably drenched in experience, 'Seasons' was confirmation that music could still be moving, that bands could still break through after years of toil and that in a tough year, the rock 'n' roll dream wasn't totally dead after all."

The song sums up a tumultuous two-and-a-half year relationship. Herring told NME: "I was trying to get her to change so that she would love me the way I wanted to be loved. And I tried to change too, until I realized that you can't do that. That's just one of those tragedies of love: it's not always going to work out, even if there is something there."

Herring explained the song's meaning. "Seasons was an idea to explain the passage of time in a rocky relationship," he said. "It means as the winter falls apart, by the summer we'll feel love again. Then, as the winter comes, it will get rid of those things we're holding onto."
