Serve The Ego Lyrics

Mirror, mirror
Do you like
What you see?
I'll dance for you
If you dance for me
Who says a woman
Cannot serve?
It would be my pleasure
Who says it is
Not my destiny
To let you control me?
Underneath the disco light
Everybody's feelin' all right
Get on your hands and knees
And praise the new deity
Serve The Ego
Serve the ego

Two ships sailing
On a neon sea
Eat the flesh
Spit out the seeds
Feathered hair
And lame heels
What turns me on
Is so surreal

Underneath the disco light
Everybody's feelin' all right
Get on your hands and knees
And praise the new deity
Serve the ego
Serve the ego

Tut tut, oh, to discover oh
Oh no, you're yesterday's lover

Underneath the disco light
Everybody's feelin' all right
Get on your hands and knees
And praise the new deity
Serve the ego
Serve the ego

Serve The Ego
  • Jewel wrote this with songwriters Cesar Lemos and Itaal Shur. Says Shur: "That resulted from a Warner-Chappel writers camp. She was there, and we started writing some songs together and a lot of cool stuff came out. We sat in a room with a couple of instruments and started to jam. I think that song came from a loop on the Triton. We put that loop on and started playing some quasi-Indian stuff and then the next thing you know, we've got a little bit of groove. One of us comes up with the melody and she says, 'Oh, I've got a good lyric for that.'" (Thanks to Itaal for speaking with us about this song. For more, check out itaalshur.com )
  • This peaked at #1 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

    Not The Same Lyrics

You took a trip and climbed a tree
    At Robert Sledge's party
And there you stayed 'till morning came
And you were Not The Same after that

You gave your life to Jesus Christ
And after all your friends went home
You came down, you looked around
And you were not the same after that

You were not the same after that
You were not the same after that

You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on...
    To it

You took the word and made it heard
And eased the people's pain and for that
    You were idolized, immortalized
And you were not the same after that

Walking tall, you'd bought it all
And you were not the same after that
Till someone died on the water slide
And you were not the same after that

You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on to it

    (ooh ooh ooh ooh)
    (You were not the same!)
    (ooh ooh ooh ooh)

You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on
    you're hanging on:

    You're hanging on
    You're hanging on

I Walk The Line Revisited Lyrics

I'm back on board that '49 Ford in 1956
Long before the sun came up way out in the sticks
The headlight showed a two rut roadway, back up in the pines
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I got my thrill behind the wheel upon my daddy?s lap
Grandpa rode co-pilot with a flashlight and a map
Cane pole out the window it was in the summertime
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I never will forget that day, I know the time and place
Sounded like the whole thing came right down from outer space
I still can see those headlights and that dashboard in my mind
The first time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day's through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line

All these long years later it's still music to my ears
I swear it sounds as good right now as anything I hear
I've seen the Mona Lisa, I've heard Shakespeare read real fine
Just like hearing Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've know proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line

Because you're mine, I walk the line

    Blue Lyrics

    Go find a jukebox
And see what a quarter will do
    I don't want to talk
I just want to go back to Blue

    Feeds me when I'm hungry
    And quenches my thirst
    Loves me when I'm lonely
    And thinks of me first

Blue is the color of night
When the red sound disappears from the sky

    Raven feathers shiny and black
A touch of blue glistening down her back

    We don't talk about heaven
And we don't talk about hell
    We've come to depend on
    One another so damn well

    So go to confession
    Whatever gets you through
    You can count your blessings
    I'll just count on blue

  • Lucinda Williams is known to defend her reputation as a control freak, but sometimes even she admits it's better to take a step back, which was the case with this song. She told Guitar World Acoustic: "I wanted to go back and recut my vocal for 'Blue' because I thought it sounded scratchy and tired. But when I tried, I had to admit that what was already there felt right for the song."

    The Grudge Lyrics

Wear The Grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell.

Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled again.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end.
    Saturn ascends, comes round again.
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten. Ignorant to the damage done.

Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.

Wear the grudge like a crown. Desperate to control.
Unable to forgive. And we're sinking deeper.

Defining, confining, controlling, and we're sinking deeper.

Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent.

Saturn comes back around. Lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone
To consume you till you choose to let this go.

    Give away the stone.
Let the oceans take and trans mutate this cold and fated anchor.
    Give away the stone.
Let the waters kiss and trans mutate these leaden grudges into gold.
    Let go.

    The Grudge
  • This is about a battle with Saturn ascending and teaching us lessons over and over again until we get it right. "Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled again" means get it right or Saturn will come around again teaching the same lesson until you do it. "The one the ten" could be the Aries and Capricorn houses in the zodiac (Capricorn is ruled by Saturn). A lot of what Maynard Keenan is saying relates to characteristics of a Capricorn. They are known to hold grudges and be control freaks. Maynard is an Aries, the true pioneer of the zodiac. It could be a message for all the caps and people out there who hold grudges.
  • The line, "Unable To Forgive Your Scarlet Lettermen" presumably refers to the classic novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. One of the main characters in the book is a female adulteress who is forced to wear a scarlet letter 'A' on her breast as punishment.

    Planets Of The Universe Lyrics

The bright light is lying down
The earth and the sea and the sky
Is at rest with the ocean
    And the days go by

They go into the seas that have no shores
Haunted by that same closed door
Looking up at skies on fire
    Leaving nothing left of us
    To discover

    [Chorus]
And the Planets Of The Universe
    Go their way
Not astounded by the sun or the moon
    Or by the day
You and I will simply disappear
    Out of sight
But I'm afraid soon there'll be
    No light

    No doubt, no pain
    Come ever again, well
Let there be light in this lifetime
In the cool, silent moments of the nighttime

    [Chorus]

    We will never change again
The way that we are changing
Well, you'll forget the chill of love
    But not the strain

    Now I know
    Well, I was wrong
    To live for a dream
If I had my life to live over
    I would never dream, no
    I still wish you gone
    And I will live alone
    Yes, I will live alone

    [Chorus]

    You will never love again
    The way you love me
    You will never rule again
    The way you ruled me
    You will never change again
    The way you're changing

All you gotta do is walk away and pass me by
Don't acknowledge my smile when I try to say hello to you, yeah
And all you gotta do is not answer my calls when
    I'm trying to get through
To keep me wondering why, when all I can do is sigh
I just want to touch you

    [Chorus]
I just want to touch and kiss
And I wish that I could be with you tonight
You give me Butterflies inside, inside and I

All I gotta say is that I must be dreaming, can't be real
You're not here with me, still I can feel you near me
I caress you, let you taste us, just so blissful listen
I would give you anything baby, just make my dreams come true
Oh baby you give me butterflies

    [Chorus: x2]
I just want to touch and kiss
And I wish that I could be with you tonight
You give me butterflies inside, inside and I

If you would take my hand, baby I would show you
Guide you to the light babe
If you would be my love, baby I will love you, love you
    'Til the end of time

  • Marsha Ambrosius of the English Neo-Soul duo Floetry wrote this ballad when she was still at school. She and her Floetry colleague Natalie Stewart both attended the Brit School for Performing Arts & Technology. They met Jackson through John McClain, DreamWorks's senior urban executive who also manages Jackson. Jacko heard this song and decided he wanted to record it.
  • Jackson invited the two Floetry girls to the studio to the studio, and asked for their input on the recording of the song. Natalie Stewart of Floetry told Yahoo: "It was incredible because he asked, he continually, asked, 'Marsh, what's the next harmony? Girls, does this sound right? What do you think? Is this what you were looking for? He was so open."
Marsha Ambrosius told Yahoo that it took a few minutes for her to calm down. She recalled: "To begin with, I was kinda shook. Because you don't realize how you're going to feel until you're put in that kind of situation. I had the tears in my eyes and got kinda nervous. But as I got into it, I realized it was work, it was a job. I had to vocally conduct a legend."
  • Ambrosius told VH1 that Stewart had a dream that the two girls were in a limo with Michael. She continued, "He was singing a song and it was like, 'Oh, I like that song.' A year later, we're in the studio cutting 'Butterflies' with Michael Jackson."
  • A year after this appeared on Invincible, Floetry's original version was included as a bonus track on the English version of their debut album Floetic.
  • Michael Jackson has said that this is his favorite song on the album.
  • The song was inspired by Marsha Ambrosius' own "butterflies." "I had a crush on a guy In London and I had butterflies in my stomach. I was too shy to tell him," she admitted to The Boombox . "The song came easy. I was in the studio with Michael about two months after I arrived in America from England. Unbelievable."

    I am incinerator
    I owe nothing to you
I stand on the equator today
    Feels all right this way

If you ever pull that shit again
Never see you the same way again
    It's embarrassin'
    I Guess It's American
    It's embarrassin'

    I am incinerator
I am dead to the world
I'll do whatever to please you today
    Feels all right this way

If you ever pull that shit again
Never see you the same way again
    It's embarrassin'
    I guess it's american
    It's embarrassin'

If you ever pull that shit again
Never see you the same way again
    It's embarrassin'
    I guess it's american
    It's embarrassin'

    Let's get drunk with harrison

    Metabolic Lyrics

Gone, I couldn't murder your promise
    Right before my eyes
    The revolutions of my psychosis
    Kept me outta the way

Once, inside, all I hold is ash

    Fail, suppressing every feeling
    I'm in so much pain
I have every fuckin' right to hate you
    I can't take it!

The hardest part was knowing that I could never be you
Now all I do is sit around and wish I could forget you

My demise, I took a life worth living and
    Made it worth a mockery
I deny, I fold, but they keep on coming
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me

Who are you to me? Who am I to you?
Is this a lesson in nepotistic negligence?
By default, you are my only link to the outside
    Psychosomatic suicide
Where were you when I was down?
Can you show me a way
To face everyday with this face, goodbye

My demise, I took a life worth living and
    Made it worth a mockery
I deny, I fold, but they keep on coming
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me

When I blur my eyes, they make the whole
World breath, I see you fucking me
And I am absolutely controlly every urge
To mutilate, the one and only answer
    So much for memories
I want to dress in your insecurities
And be the perfect you, I'm through
I'm out-stretched out for all to loathe
Here we go, the ultimate irony

My demise, I took a life worth living and
    Made it worth a mockery
I deny, I fold, but they keep on coming
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
I'm always ready to die but you're killing me
Killing me, killing me, killing me
    Killing me,

    Bank Robber Man Lyrics

I was walking down the street today
Just as somebody blew the doors off of the be of A
Just then I head them call my name
As I was thrown against the car
    I was being framed

All units we've got our man
We've got the Bank Robber Man
    We don't need no reason
    You're going in the can
You look like the bank robber man
    I think you misunderstand
Do you think that I am the one that did it
    Just because I'm tan?
Just then the officer at hand said
I don't give a damn that you are in a rock and roll band

All units we've got our man
We've got the bank robber man
    We don't need no reason
    You're going in the can
You look like the bank robber man

Just tell me what's going on ?
Can you tell me what I did wrong ?
Does busting me make you feel strong ?
    Make you feel strong

All units we've got our man
We've got the bank robber man
    We don't need no reason
    You're going in the can

    Under My Umbrella Lyrics

    When I close my eyes
    I can see for miles
There's comfort in my dark seat
    And chaos in the aisles

These eyes are not your eyes
And these eyes are not the color that
    Your arid eyes might be
    No, I was not around
When those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the
    Sights you choose to see

    When I close my eyes
    I remember why I smile
    Under My Umbrella
    I'm an accomplished exile

These eyes are not your eyes
And these eyes are not the color that
    Your arid eyes might be
    No, I was not around
When those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see!

If this is right, I'd rather be wrong
If this is sight, I'd rather be blind

These eyes are not your eyes
And these eyes are not the color that
    Your arid eyes might be
    No, I was not around
When those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see!

If this is right, I'd rather be wrong
If this is sight, I'd rather be blind

    Under My Umbrella
  • This song tells you to be your own person. You decide what you believe, what you see, who you are, etc. People who force their beliefs on you are nothing more than rain coming down on your umbrella. If what someone else believes is considered right (and you disagree), then you would rather be wrong. If what they see is considered sight, you would rather be blind.
  • There is a lick from Björk's "Possibly Maybe" in the song at a slower tempo.

    Dead, Drunk, And Naked Lyrics

When I was a young boy I sniffed a lot of glue
Mom sent me to rehab, they told me what to do
We didn't have much money; the lord picked up the tab
They made me write him love songs, sitting in my room

Now I just drink whiskey and drive around my friends
Get a haircut, get a job, maybe born again
And if you're living badly, we'll tell you how to live
    Dead, Drunk, And Nakedâ?¦

If you're out there listening, I just want you to know
I been doing just fine, psychiatrists tell me so
My scars are patched up; my arms have almost healed
My demons almost tranquilized, my pains almost killed

Me and old Jack Daniel's, become the best of friends
We got all them Baptist's to die for our sins
I know the lord is coming
The South will rise again! (Dead, drunk, and naked)

Daddy used to tell me, everything comes down to what they say about you when you're not around
And I wish that he was here now, I'm sure he would be proud
No one talks about me; the voices are too loud.

So if you come to see me, I'm sure you'll be impressed
By how well I'm behaving and how well I'm dressed
If you come to see me, hope you're coming soon

    Dead, Drunk, And Naked
  • This is about Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins. Some of the anecdotes mentioned in the lyrics:
Collins signed up for wood shop class in High School so that he could sniff glue all day. On one occasion, he passed out in class from sniffing glue.
In 1986, Collins was involved in a death that resulted from drunk driving. His girlfriend was riding in the car with him when he crashed. She was killed while Allen Collins was paralyzed.
Collins was convicted of DUI manslaughter after pleading no contest. He had a bad habit of drinking throughout his years with Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 1990, he died of pneumonia.
At one point, Collins father forced him to cut his hair and get a job.
  • The entire album deals with the history of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

    Greenville To Baton Rouge Lyrics

One more night, one more show, four down, eighty-four to go
This ain't no time for moving slow

    Greenville To Baton Rouge
I'll call you up when I get through
The life I live is the life I choose
    Greenville to Baton Rouge

The shows have sure been great this year
All eight cylinders all twelve gears
Call you up when I touch down at the airport in a Louisiana town.

    Street survivors, feeling no pain
A little more rock, a little less cocaine.
And don't forget about Stevie Gaines

    Greenville to Baton Rouge
I'll call you up when I get through
If it's the last thing that I do
    Greenville to Baton Rouge

Last night, you should have seen this plane. The right engine shot a twelve foot flame.
But South Carolina made us glad we came.
Now we're up in the air again.

Once we hit Louisiana, baby, I don't care
Got a brand new airplane waiting for us there
Give this piece of shit back to Aerosmith.
Wake me up when we get there.

The right engine gave a little flash, the pilot panicked and dumped the gas
Everything is quiet, we're dropping fast.
When we touch down gonna whup' his ass!

    Greenville to Baton Rouge
Can't die now got a show to do
The life I live is the life I choose
    Greenville to Baton Rouge.

    Greenville To Baton Rouge
  • This song depicts the flight from Greenville, South Carolina to Baton Rouge, Louisiana; the plane was carrying the band Lynyrd Skynyrd and crashed that night. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant fell asleep during this flight and was sleeping on the floor when the emergency began. He was quickly awoken and put into a seat and strapped in. The airplane was supposed to be repaired when the crew got to Baton Rouge, where a mechanic from Texas was meeting them. Both engines were failing during flight and the loss of gasoline was too much for the plane to make it to Baton Rouge. Once the crew realized they couldn't make it to Baton Rouge, they turned the plane around to reach the nearest airport. Shortly after the plane turned around, it ran out of gas, the engines turned off, and the controls were no longer operable for controlling the decent of the plane.
