Help The Aged Lyrics

Help the aged,
One time they were just like you
Drinking, smoking cigs and sniffing glue
Help the aged
Don't just put them in a home
Can't have much fun when they're all on their own
Give a hand, if you can
Try and help them to unwind
Give them hope and give them comfort
'Cause they're running out of time

In the meantime we try
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever
No big deal, so give us all a feel
Funny how it all falls away
When did you first realize?
It's time you took an older lover, baby
Teach you stuff, although he's looking rough
Funny how it all falls away

Help the aged
'Cause one day you'll be older too
You might need someone who can pull you through
And if you look very hard
Behind those lines upon their face
You may see where you are headed
And it's such a lonely place, oh

In the meantime we try
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever
No big deal so give us all a feel
Funny how it all falls away
When did you first realize?
It's time you took an older lover baby
Teach you stuff although he's looking rough
Funny how it all falls away

You can dye your hair but it's the one thing you can't change
Can't run away from yourself, yourself, yours-s-s-s-self

In the meantime we try
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever
No big deal, so give us all a feel
Funny how it all falls away.
When did you first realize?
It's time you took an older lover, baby
Teach you stuff, although he's looking rough
Funny how it all falls away
Oh, it's funny how it all falls away
Funny how it all falls away
Oh, it's funny how it all, how it all falls away
So help the aged

Help The Aged Song Chart
  • This song was chosen as the lead single from 1998 album This Is Hardcore, and signposted the new direction the band took - one full of cynicism and loathing for the fame that had accompanied their breakthrough 1995 record Different Class.

It's one that surprised many who were expecting more upbeat tunes like "Common People," but one that Jarvis Cocker was keen to go in. Observer music critic Sean O'Hagan noted in a 2002 interview with Cocker that This Is Hardcore "cost Pulp a sizeable proportion of their post-Common People fan base," but Cocker in the same interview notes: "I weren't surprised in the slightest. Songs about panic attacks, pornography, fear of death and getting old are never gonna be top of the hit parade, are they? I wrote about my own life. Before that, it was me pottering about, picking up bits of information from wherever. Then it became very interior. Introspective. I don't think introspection is ever that healthy. In my experience, the more angst-ridden I've been, the worse the music is.'
  • Despite the dark tone of the song, "Help The Aged" still charted at #8 in the UK singles chart, making it the band's fifth consecutive Top 10 single.
  • In Seven Years of Plenty, Ben Thompson notes the dark themes of aging and death referenced in "Help The Aged": "Jarvis Cocker croons caringly, over a sparse piano accompaniment, 'One day they were just like you: drinking, smoking cigs and sniffing glue.' But this jaunty one-two is just softening us up for the death blow: 'If you look very hard behind the lines upon their face, you may see where you are heading and it's such a lonely place.'"
  • In an interview with Uncut in 1998, Cocker noted the problems faced with making a similarly dark video, particularly with reference to Stannah stairlifts: '"We had loads of trouble with that video because we weren't allowed to mention death; we'd got the Stannah stairlift people involved, and they didn't want their product associated with taking people off to heaven. So we had to pretend that they were going to this other planet, but they were actually passing over to the other side. I'm sure Stannah stairlifts don't actually kill people. They move too slow to run people over."
  • The B-side contains the track "Tommorow Never Lies," and yes, the reference to the similarly named James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies is entirely deliberate, for this song was originally set to be used as the theme tune to that film before being passed over in favor of Sheryl Crow's track.

Originally Pulp's track was also called "Tomorrow Never Dies" but was renamed to a working title for the film, with the very original version as submitted to the Bond producers (and named "Tomorrow Never Dies") surfacing on the bonus disc of the This Is Hardcore 2006 reissue.

    Out Of Control Lyrics

    Monday morning
    Eighteen years of dawning
    I say how long
    You say how long

    It was one dull morning
    Woke the world with bawling
I was so sad (so sad)
    It was so bad

I was of a feeling it was out of control
I had the opinion it was out of control

    Boys and girls
Go to the school and girls
    They make children
    Not like this one

I was of a feeling it was out of control
I had the opinion it was out of control

I was of a feeling it was out of control
I had the opinion it was out of control

    (Out of control)

    (Out of control)

    I fought fate
There's blood on the garden gate
    The man said childhood
    It's in his childhood

    One day I'll die
The choice will not be mine
    Will it be too late
    You can't fight it

I was of a feeling it was out of control
I had the opinion it was out of control

  • Bono (Hot Press, October 1979): "Out Of Control is about waking up on your eighteenth birthday and realizing that you're 18 years old and that the 2 most important decisions in your life have nothing to do with you - being born and dying." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • This was included on U2's first release, U23, a single available only in Ireland in 1979 which also contained "Stories For Boys" and "Boy Girl." Only 1000 copies were pressed, making it a rare collector's item today.
  • This was chosen as the A-side of the single when an Irish disk-jockey asked listeners to choose among the 3 songs on U23.
  • Along with "Stories For Boys," this was one of 2 songs to make it on Boy from U23, which was only released in Ireland. The version on Boy was reworked by producer Steve Lillywhite.

  • This hip-hop club banger features Auto-Tuned rap-singing vocals by Beyoncé over Bobby Johnson and Detail's warped uptempo beat. It finds Mrs. Carter detailing her dance moves:

Wave your hands side to side, put it in the air
Clap, clap, clap like you don't care
Smack that, clap, clap, clap, like you don't care
    (I know you care)

Beyoncé is encouraging girls to dance how they want with abandon.
  • Chicago rapper ACE B8gie recorded a track over the same beat before this song existed. His cut "Bird's Eye View" from The B8gie Foo' Blues EP, was also produced by Bobby Johnson.
  • The song's music video was shot in the style of a homemade visual with Beyoncé dancing and joking around in front of the camera. Did you spot the singer's daughter Blue Ivy Carter making a cameo appearance at 0:58 chilling on the bed?

You tryin'a drive me force me, didn't get very much
You said forever but baby I'm not so sure
You said you loved me (Okay, let's rock)

    I will follow

I was on the outside when you said
    You said you needed me
    I was looking at myself
I was blind, I could not see

A boy tries hard to be a man
His mother takes him by his hand
If he stops to think he starts to cry
    Oh why

If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away, I will follow

If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away, I will follow, I will follow

    I was on the inside
When they pulled the four walls down
I was looking through the window
I was lost, I am found

    Walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away, I will follow
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away, I will follow
    I will follow

    Your eyes make a circle
I see you when I go in there
Your eyes, your eyes, your eyes, your eyes

If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away, I will follow

If you walk away, walk away

  • Bono's lyric was inspired by his mother, who died in 1974 when he was 14. Bono calls it "a song about unconditional love."

The love he refers to is between a mother and a child, how no matter what the child does, the mother will still love him. There is a biblical component to the song as well, as it's an analog to the love of God as expressed in Romans 8:39: "In neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God."
  • This was the first song on the first U2 album. It was released as a single at the same time as the album Boy.
  • This song is an example of what would become The Edge's distinctive guitar style. He felt he could play only a few notes, but make it work by finding the right ones.
  • The spiritual themes in the lyrics were typical of early U2. Bono, The Edge, and Larry Mullen were members of a devout Christian group.
  • For sound effects, bottles were thrown on the floor and bicycle wheels were spun and hit with bottles and knives. (thanks, Bill - Johnstown, PA)
  • A glockenspiel, which is a percussion instrument similar to a xylophone, was used.
  • A concert favorite, this appears on their live album Under A Blood Red Sky.
  • Collective Soul played this at Woodstock '99. Other groups who played it from time to time include Third Eye Blind and Hootie & the Blowfish. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The Replacements recorded an answer song to this called "Kids Don't Follow" on their album Stink.
  • What happened to the boy on the album cover? His name is Peter Rowen and he is the younger brother of Bono's friend, Guggi, a one-time member of the goth/post-punk band The Virgin Prunes. Peter also appeared on several other of U2's release covers and is now a renowned Irish photographer.

Tune out the world and roll with the melody
Baby, Listen close and open up your mind

    Imagine if anywhere
More than miles, I'll take you there
Knew one day, from the start
We'd be as one, now here we are

Soundtrack in the wind, like passing violins
I can be your rhythm in the silence
And every time we sing, it echoes in the sky
Let me close your eyes, help you fantasize
Make a kiss our playlist the entire night
Listen to the words as I let 'em fly, oh

  • This cut follows Guetta's often-used formula of starting slowly and quietly before developing into a booming synth and bass-filled chorus. ("Titanium" is a good example).

    Father of Mine Lyrics

    Father of mine
Tell me where have you been
You know I just closed my eyes
    My whole world disappeared
    Father of mine
Take me back to the day
When I was still your golden boy
    Back before you went away

    I remember the blue skies
    Walking the block
I loved it when you held me high
I loved to hear you talk
You would take me to the movie
You would take me to the beach
You would take me to a place inside
That is so hard to reach

    Father of mine
Tell me where did you go
You had the world inside your hand
But you did not seem to know
    Father of mine
Tell me what do you see
When you look back at your wasted life
    And you don't see me

    I was ten years old
    Doing all that I could
    It wasn't easy for me
To be a scared white boy
    In a black neighborhood
Sometimes you would send me a birthday card
    With a five dollar bill
    I never understood you then
And I guess I never will

    Daddy gave me a name
My dad he gave me a name
    Then he walked away
    Daddy gave me a name
    Then he walked away
My dad gave me a name

    Father of mine
Tell me where have you been
    I just closed my eyes
    And the world disappeared
    Father of mine
Tell me how do you sleep
    With the children you abandoned
And the wife I saw you beat

    I will never be safe
    I will never be sane
I will always be weird inside
    I will always be lame
    Now I'm a grown man
With a child of my own
And I swear I'm not going to let her know
All the pain I have known

    Then he walked away
    Daddy gave me a name
    Then he walked away
My dad gave me a name
    Then he walked away
    Daddy gave me a name
    Then he walked away

  • A scathing attack on deadbeat dads. It was based on lead singer Art Alexakis' father. He says it is one of the very few songs he has written that is autobiographical.
  • In 2003, Alexakis told us: "My feelings for my father haven't necessarily changed, but my feelings about myself after writing that song have been much better. It was kind of a catharsis to put those feelings into words, it's a way for me to get things out of my system. The song 'Wonderful' is very much like that too."
  • Art doesn't speak with his father and can't be sure if he's heard this or not, but he knows that his stepsisters, who were raised by his dad, weren't happy about this song. (Check out our interview with Art Alexakis.)
  • As it states in the song, Alexakis really did get Christmas cards from his father containing $5.
  • Alexakis testified before congress on March 16, 2000 to endorse a child support bill.
  • This was remixed and included on Hope In Hockeytown, an album celebrating the Detroit Red Wings back-to-back Stanley Cup Victories.

If you could take my pulse right now
It would feel just like a sledgehammer
If you could feel my heart beat now
It would hit you like a sledgehammer

    I don't admit it
    I play it cool
    But every minute
    That I'm with you

I feel the fever and I won't lie
    I break a sweat
    My body's telling
All the secrets I ain't told you yet

    (Oh oh)
I struggle to contain (whoa oh)
The love that's in my veins (oh oh)
And how it circulates (oh oh)

If you could take my pulse right now
It would feel just like a sledgehammer
If you could feel my heart beat now
It would hit you like a sledgehammer

You're taken over the beat of my body
You just don't let up, don't let up
You're taken over the beat of my body
But you lift me up, lift me up
If you take my pulse right now
It would feel just like a sledgehammer

    So close together
    So far apart
    You're turning me on
And my fire's waitin' for your spark

    (Oh oh)
I struggle to contain (whoa oh)
The love that's in my veins (oh oh)
And how it circulates (oh oh)

If you could take my pulse right now

You're taken over the beat of my body

You're taken over the beat of my body
But you lift me up, lift me up
If you take my pulse right now

    The truth is out
    No stopping now
    I'm getting closer
    I've had enough
    Undress my love
    I'm coming over

If you take my pulse right now
It would feel just like a sledgehammer, oh
And if you take my pulse right now
It would feel just like a sledgehammer, hammer, oh

    If you take my pulse

If you could take my pulse right now
It would feel just like a sledgehammer
If you could feel my heart beat now
It would hit you like a sledgehammer

You're taken over the beat of my body
You just don't let up, don't let up
You're taken over the beat of my body
But you lift me up, lift me up
If you take my pulse right now
It would feel just like a sledgehammer

    Sledgehammer Song Chart
  • The second single from Reflection finds a loved-up Fifth Harmony singing about being turned on by their man. "It's cool because we've never released a single that's about love - a happy, cute love song," Fifth Harmony's Camila Cabello told Billboard magazine. "It's about being with the person you like and feeling the beating of the heartbeat that beats like a sledgehammer."
  • The song was written by Meghan Trainor with Eric Frederic and Sean Douglas. Before becoming a successful recording artist, the "All About That Bass" star was a songwriter for Big Yellow Dog. Trainor's early songwriting credits for the company included co-penning "DJ Tonight" and "I Like the Sound of That" for Rascal Flatts' Rewind album.
  • The video features the 5H ladies wearing matching off-white outfits, pulling out their best co-ordinated dance moves and pouting from suspended swings. It also includes a silhouetted dude with, yep, a sledgehammer. The clip was directed and choreographed by Fatima Robinson, who also helmed the visual for "Bo$$."

No One To Run With Lyrics

    Everybody wanna know
    Where Jimmy has gone
    He left town
I doubt if he's comin' back home
    Tony gotta job
Three kids and a lovely wife
    Workin' in the commerce bank
For the rest of his life

Nobody left to run with anymore
Nobody wants to do the crazy things
    We used to do before
Nobody left to run with anymore

    I'm gonna hit the road
    Adios my friend
    Go some place
    And start all over again
    Don't know where I'm goin'
Like a gypsy out on the road
Go some place and join a travelin' show

Nobody left to run with anymore
Nobody wants to do the crazy things
    We used to do before
Nobody left to run with anymore

Nobody left to run with anymore
Nobody left to run with anymore

I think Jimmy must've had the right idea
    He packed his stuff
And he got right out of here
    I don't know where he's at
But I'm sure that he's ok
    Now I realize
What Jimmy was tryin' to say

Nobody left to run with anymore
Nobody wants to do the crazy things
    We used to do before
Nobody left to run with anymore

Nobody left to run with anymore
No no nobody left to run with anymore

  • Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts wrote this song about leaving the past behind and starting a new life.
  • This uses the "Bo Diddley Beat," or something close to it. The Rolling Stones used the beat on "The Last Time" and U2 on "Desire."
  • Gregg Allman sang lead. It is one of the few songs Dickey Betts wrote for the group but did not sing.
  • This was included on the 2002 compilation CD Mullets Rock!. For a while, The Allman Brothers were prime offenders of the haircut that was "Business in the front, party in the back."

    You Might Think Lyrics

    You Might Think I'm crazy
    To hang around with you
    Maybe you think I'm lucky
    To have something to do

But I think that you're wild
    Inside me is some child

    You might think I'm foolish
    Or maybe it's untrue
    You might think I'm crazy
But all I want is you

    You might think it's hysterical
But I know when you're weak
You think you're in the movies
    And everything's so deep

But I think that you're wild
When you flash that fragile smile

    You might think it's foolish
    What you put me through
    You might think I'm crazy
But all I want is you

And it was hard, so hard to take
There's no escape without a scrape

You kept it going till the sun fell down
    You kept it going

Well you might think I'm delirious
The way I run you down
But somewhere sometimes, when you're curious
    I'll be back around

Oh I think that you're wild
    And so uniquely styled

    You might think it's foolish
    This chancy rendezvous
    You might think I'm crazy
But all I want is you
    All I want is you
    All I want is you

  • This won the first-ever Video of the Year award at MTV's Video Music Awards. It beat out "Thriller" by Michael Jackson and Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," among others.
  • The video was very advanced for the time and was one of the first to use computerized effects. Singer/guitarist Ric Ocasek's image appeared in various animated scenes - he would show up as a fly, climbing the Empire State Building, just about anywhere to get the attention of the girl. The object of his affection was played by model Susan Gallagher.
  • This was produced by Mutt Lange, who has also worked with Def Leppard and AC/DC. He was married to Shania Twain from 1993-2008.
  • Ric Ocasek wrote this song. He sings about a girl who thinks he's crazy for putting up with him because she's so difficult.
  • Weezer recorded this for the 2011 movie Cars 2 - their version was used in a scene where Lightning McQueen and Mater go to Japan. The actual Cars had reunited by 2011, but apparently weren't contemporary enough for the kids' movie.
  • The antecedent for the video were commercials for the American gossip magazine National Enquirer, which featured goofy cutout animations of the celebrities the magazine would feature. These spots were produced at Charlex studios, so Jeff Stein, who directed the "You Might Think" video, commissioned them to work on it after pitching The Cars on the idea, which was putting the band in pop culture scenarios and having an animated Ric Ocasek stalk the girl. Getting the band on board wasn't easy. Stein explained in the book I Want My MTV: "I met The Cars and told them, 'The band's in the medicine chest, and then on a bar of soap, and Ric's a fly,' and one of them said, 'Why don't we all just play on a turd in the toilet bowl?' That was the prevailing attitude."

Stein was famous for his live videos like what he did with Billy Idol on "Rebel Yell," but he thought The Cars were a boring live band so he used digital trickery to get around that.

The video took months to make and at first it aired without the fly, which wasn't ready yet. The effects seen in the video can be created with a basic program these days, but in 1984 creating and rendering this stuff was extremely tedious and time consuming.
