Lola Lyrics

I met her in a club down in North Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola
C-O-L-A cola

She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her name and in a dark brown voice she said, "Lola"
L-O-L-A Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walk like a woman and talk like a man
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Well, we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said, "Little boy won't you come home with me?"

Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes
Well, I almost fell for my Lola
Lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Lola lo lo lo lo Lola lo lo lo lo Lola

I pushed her away, I walked to the door
I fell to the floor, I got down on my knees
I looked at her, and she at me

Well that's the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
Lo lo lo lo Lola

Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls
It's a mixed-up, muddled-up, shook-up world
Except for Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Well I left home just a week before
And I've never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said, "Little boy, gonna make you a man"

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
Lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola
Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola
Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola
Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola
Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola
Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola...

Lola Song Chart
  • This song is about a cross-dresser. According to a 2004 piece in Rolling Stone magazine, it may have been inspired by the famous transgender actress Candy Darling, who Kinks lead singer Ray Davies allegedly dated for a brief time. This is the same Candy mentioned in Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side" ("Candy came from out on the island, in the backroom she was everybody's darling").

The other possibility, which is stated in The Kinks: The Official Biography , is that Ray Davies wrote the lyrics after their manager got drunk at a club and started dancing with what he thought was a woman. Toward the end of the night, his stubble started showing, but their manager was too tanked to notice.

Said Davies: "'Lola' was a love song, and the person they fall in love with is a transvestite. It's not their fault - they didn't know - but you know it's not going to last. It was based on a story about my manager."
  • The Kinks came up with the riff after messing around with open strings on guitars. The group's guitarist, Dave Davies, contended that he deserved a songwriting credit on the track, leading to additional friction with his brother Ray, who got the sole composer credit.
  • This revived the career of The Kinks, at least in America where their popularity was fading. Their previous Top 40 in the States was "Sunny Afternoon" in 1966.
  • The line "You drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola" was recorded as "it tastes just like Coca-Cola." The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) refused to play it because of the commercial reference, so Ray Davies flew from New York to London to change the lyric and get the song on the air.
  • Lola is mentioned in the 1981 Kinks song "Destroyer," which begins: "Met a girl called Lola and I took her back to my place."
  • Ray Davies, who wrote this song, told Rolling Stone in 2014 why this song didn't cause more of an uproar considering its storyline. "The subject matter was concealed," he said. "It's a crafty way of writing. I say, 'She woke up next to me,' and people think it's a woman. The story unfolds better than if the song were called 'I Dated a Drag Queen.'"
  • The Kinks' fans were not the type of people who would relate to a transvestite, but they loved this. It opened the door for artists like Lou Reed and David Bowie to explore homosexuality in songs that straight people liked too.
  • Weird Al Yankovic recorded a parody of this song entitled "Yoda" (based on the Star Wars movies) for his 1985 album Dare to Be Stupid. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)
  • Ray Davies used his National Steel resonator guitar for the first time on this song. He recalled to Uncut: "On 'Lola' I wanted an intro similar to what we used on Dedicated Follower Of Fashion, which was two Fender acoustic guitars and Dave's electric guitar so I went down to Shaftesbury Avenue and bought a Martin guitar, and this National guitar that I got for £80, then double-tracked the Martin, and double-tracked the National – that's what got that sound."
  • The Kinks probably weren't familiar with it, but an American song published in 1918 also mentions Lola and Coca-Cola. In "Ev'ry Day'll Be Sunday When The Town Goes Dry," we hear the line, "At the table with Lola they will serve us Coca-Cola."
  • Ray Davies told interviewer Daniel Rachel (The Art of Noise: Conversations with Great Songwriters) that he didn't initially show the lyrics to the band. "We just rehearsed it with the la-la la-la Lo-la chorus which came first. I had a one-year-old daughter at the time and she was singing along to it."

    Beg For It Lyrics

I'mma make you beg, I'mma make you Beg For It
I'mma make you beg, I'mma make you beg

Pulled up looking picture perfect, baby
High price, but I'm worth it, baby
Can't play with ya, I've been busy workin', baby
Gettin' faded in a European swervin' ay
Look, describe Iggy, groundbreaking what the word is
Hit the stage, yeah, shake it like I'm nervous
When in New York got me parking right on Madison
This ain't no accident, I'm killing them on purpose
I-G-G-Y, did she just have to do it baby
Ride with me, fly livin', there ain't nothin' to it
Now my waist slim, ass fat you gotta have it
Get my bake on, cake long
    That's automatic

I know you like the way I turn it on
I'm out here with my friends
I'mma make you beg, I'mma make you beg for it
If you don't do this right, you're going home alone
I guess you'll have to beg
I'mma make you beg, I'mma make you beg for it

P-p-pussy power, pay me by the hour
I need me a Braveheart, can't deal with a coward
I tell him if he ain't ballin', he should hit the showers
If I peek and you lucky, baby, there's money hours
All yellow gold on me, like I'm Trinidad, James
Sittin' drop top wonderin' where the ceiling's at
I know my old thang wanna bring the feeling back
But I got a new thang, baby, I ain't feeling that
Iggy Iggy Iggy, can't you see?
That everybody wanna put their hands on me
See I be on this money why your man on me?
And I need another hand with all these bandz on me

I know you like the way I turn it on
I'm out here with my friends
I'mma make you beg, I'mma make you beg for it
If you don't do this right, you're going home alone
I guess you'll have to beg
I'mma make you beg, I'mma make you beg for it

Get up out my face like who' you think you are
Talking all this trash like blah-de-blah-de-blah
(Oh eh oh) na ha (oh eh oh) na ha (oh eh oh)
Get up out my face like who'd you think you are
Make me wanna lay it like hi-di-hi-di-ha
(Oh eh oh) na ha (oh eh oh) na ha (oh eh oh)

I know you like the way I turn it on
I'm out here with my friends
I'mma make you beg, I'mma make you beg for it
If you don't do this right, you're going home alone
I guess you'll have to beg
I'mma make you beg, I'mma make you beg for it

Oh boy, I'm like a drug
If you want my love better smoke it up
(Make you beg for it, I'mma make you beg for it)
You can look, boy, but don't you touch
If you want my love make me give a fuck

  • This song finds Iggy spitting verses about being hard to get whilst Danish pop singer Mø contributes the hook. The tune was released as the lead single of Reclassified, the repack of the rapper's debut album.
  • The song's hook was written by Iggy's "Fancy" collaborator Charli XCX. The percolating beat was supplied by the rapper's frequent collaborators, The Invisible Men.
  • Iggy previewed the song live at Australia's O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire on September 17, 2014 with Charli XCX singing the hook on that occasion.
  • At one point Iggy plays on the famous Slick Rick line ("Ricky, Ricky, Ricky, can't you see
Somehow your words just hypnotize me") from Doug E Fresh's "La Di Da Di":

Iggy Iggy Iggy, can't you see?
That everybody wanna put their hands on me

Biggie previously reworked the lyric in a similar way for the hook of his hit tune "Hypnotize."
  • Iggy and Mø performed the song on TV for the first time during the Australian rapper's October 25, 2014 guest appearance on Saturday Night Live. Mø appeared to have problems keeping up, which she later blamed on "technical issues" that confused her. "It sucks to be an anti-hero," she said.

    Rock And Roll Band Lyrics

Well, we were just another band out of Boston
On the road to try to make ends meet
Playin' all the bars, sleepin' in our cars
And we practiced right on out in the street
No, we didn't have much money
We barely made enough to survive
But when we got up on stage and got ready to play
    People came alive.

    Rock And Roll Band
    Everybody's waitin'
    Gettin' crazy
    Anticipating love and music
Play, play, play, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Dancin' in the streets of Hyannis
We were getting pretty good at the game
People stood in line and didn't seem to mind
You know everybody knew our name
    Livin' on rock-n-roll music
Never worry 'bout the things we were missing
When we got up on the stage and got ready to play
    Everybody'd listen.

    Rock and roll band
    Everybody's waitin'
    Gettin' crazy
    Anticipating love and music
Play, play, play, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Playin' for a week in Rhode Island
A man came to the stage one night
    He smoked a big cigar
    Drove a Cadillac car
And said, "boys, I think this bands outta-sight
    Sign a record company contract
You know I've got great expectations
When I hear you on the car radio
You're goin' to be a sensation!"

    Rock and roll band

  • This song is not about the band. Many people assume it is because the lyrics are in the first person and they sing about being from Boston, which they are. Group leader Tom Scholz wrote the song based on conversations he had with Jim Masdea, a musician who has played with many local bands in Boston. Masdea was always telling Scholz about struggling bands trying to get signed to record contracts.
  • Boston had quite the opposite experience of the group they sing about here. Rather than paying their dues on the road, Boston released a well-produced album that was an instant hit. They did not tour before releasing their album.

    I got a Girl Crush
    Hate to admit it but
    I got a heart rush
    Ain't slowing down
    I got it real bad
    Want everything she has
That smile and that midnight laugh
    She's giving you now

I want to taste her lips
Yeah, 'cause they taste like you
    I want to drown myself
In a bottle of her perfume
I want her long blonde hair
    I want her magic touch
    Yeah, 'cause maybe then
You'd want me just as much
    I got a girl crush
    I got a girl crush

    I don't get no sleep
    I don't get no peace
    Thinking about her
    Under your bed sheets
    The way that she's whispering
The way that she's pulling you in
    Lord knows I've tried,
I can't get her off my mind

I want to taste her lips

  • This song finds Karen Fairchild taking the lead as she sings about her envy concerning an ex's new girl. "It's written like a good old country jealousy story," she explained to Radio.com . "I think we've all felt that, where we've lost a relationship and been rejected and we look at, 'What did he want that I didn't have?' I think it's a really easy thing to relate to, and yet you've never heard it said in that way."
  • This was one of three songs penned for the Pain Killer album by Lori McKenna , Liz Rose and Hillary Lindsey - the others being "Save Your Sin" and "Tumble and Fall."

It was McKenna who came up with the "Girl Crush" title. The songwriter recalled to Rolling Stone Country testing it on Rose. "She gave me this look like she just hated it," McKenna remembered. "She said, 'Lori, shut it down. We're not writing a song called Girl Crush.' She didn't even explain, she just hated it."

McKenna then decided to try the idea on Lindsey. "Liz starts with her argument with the dirty look and, I'm not kidding, Hillary played the first chord and sang the first verse as it is. And immediately after she sang it, Liz said, 'Oh my god, I love this idea! I get it now, I love it!'" McKenna recalled with a laugh. "So we wrote it pretty quickly. And because Liz hated it so much at first, we thought nobody was going to like the song but us, so we weren't careful. It's good for your songwriting soul to write a song that's just for you and isn't commercial."
  • Jimi Westbrook recalled hearing the song for the first time to Taste of Country . "It took our breath," he said. "We were like, 'Wow, I've never heard that lyric before.' And that's not easy to do these days, because you feel like everything's been done at some point or another. The first time we heard it, we were like, 'Wow, we've got to cut that.'"
  • LBT's Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman fell in love with the ballad immediately. "I knew as soon as I heard the hook of the first chorus that we had to have this song," Fairchild told Rolling Stone. "I'd never heard a jealousy song written like this. It's definitely one of the best songs I've ever heard and to get to sing it every night is a gift."
  • The song was Little Big Town's second #1 on the country chart, following "Pontoon." In its eleventh week on top of the listing this beat the record for the reign at the summit by a group (of at least three members). The song it overtook was trio The Browns' "The Three Bells," which spent ten weeks at peak position in 1959.
  • The video was directed by photographer Matthew Welch and the stylist Karla Welch. Presented in black-and-white, the clip shows the group performing the song on a bare stage.
  • This won Single of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2015 CMA Awards. It was also nominated for Music Video of the Year, but lost to "Girl in a Country Song" by Maddie & Tae.
  • Little Big Town performed this at the Grammy Awards in 2016, where it won for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Best Country Song. It was also nominated for Song of the Year, but lost that one to "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran.
  • Lori McKenna recalled to the Los Angeles Times how she, Liz Rose and Hillary Lindsey wrote the song in their pajamas at Rose's house at 9 o'clock in the morning.

"This is what happened: Liz was making eggs, and I said, "I wanna write a song called 'Girl Crush.'" Hillary walked downstairs and poured a cup of coffee, then she picked up a guitar, which we figured out later was Chris Stapleton's old guitar, and I repeated, Let's write a song called 'Girl Crush.'" And I'm not kidding you — I swear to God — Hillary sang the first four lines of the song exactly the way they are. Then she looked up at us and said, 'You mean like that?' And Liz and I said, 'Yes! That's exactly what we mean.

But there was absolutely no discussion of what that title means. I said the title and Hillary sang it, and it was that quick. So when people say, 'Oh, they thought this through, they knew they were pressing a button,' it's so funny to the three of us, because there was no conversation about it at all."

    More Than a Feeling Lyrics

I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away

It's More Than a Feeling (more than a feeling) when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
And I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
Till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away

So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky

It's more than a feeling (more than a feeling), when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
And I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
Till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away

When I'm tired and thinking cold
I hide in my music, forget the day
And dream of a girl I used to know
I closed my eyes and she slipped away
    She slipped away

It's more than a feeling (more than a feeling), when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
And I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)

  • Group leader Tom Scholz wrote this song. A graduate of MIT, he was working at Polaroid up until this was released.
  • According to Rolling Stone magazine, Scholz was inspired by the "heart-tugging mood" of the Left Banke's 1967 song "Walk Away Renee." He worked on the song for five years in his basement studio before it was released on this album. (thanks, Scott - chicago, IL)
  • This was Boston's first single, and a surprising hit. The group's rise was sudden and unexpected; they recorded most of their first album in Tom Scholz, which was stocked with equipment he bought with earnings from his job at Polaroid. When they finally got a record deal with CBS, they had to abide by union rules and complete it in a proper studio, which Scholz felt was a hindrance.

When "More Than a Feeling" was released, the group's managers spent a lot of time pitching it to radio stations, and the song took off. Suddenly, this unknown band with an album recorded mostly in a basement was a major player on the rock scene.
  • The album Boston is one of the best selling of all time. It sold very well in the '80s and '90s due to catalog sales, which were these offers record companies made to the public where you could get something like "25 CDs for a penny" as long as you chose from their selection and agreed to buy a certain number of albums in the future.
  • The single was edited from the album version.
  • Nirvana sometimes played the beginning of this as an intro to "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
  • On Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest songs of all time, this song is #500. (thanks, Julian - Anaheim, CA)
  • When Mike Huckabee ran for US president in 2008, he used this song at some of his campaign rallies. Huckabee plays the bass, and at some events, former Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau joined him on stage to perform this song. This didn't go over well with Tom Scholz, who wrote Huckabee a letter that was printed in Rolling Stone magazine. Scholz wrote: "While I'm flattered that you are fond of my song, I'm shocked that you would use it and the name Boston to promote yourself without my consent. Your campaign's use of 'More Than a Feeling,' coupled with the representation of one of your supporters as a member 'of Boston' clearly implies that the band Boston, and specifically one of its members, has endorsed your candidacy, neither of which is true. Your claim that this was 'the guy who originally did it' is a bit mystifying, since he never played on that recording, nor has he been 'of Boston' since he left my band over a quarter century ago, after performing with us for only three years."

Scholz went on to say that his band has never endorsed a political candidate, "and with all due respect, would not start by endorsing a candidate who is the polar opposite of most everything Boston stands for. In fact, although I'm impressed you learned my bass guitar part on 'More Than a Feeling,' I am an Obama supporter. While this may seem like a little thing to you, Boston has been my life's work." The response from Huckabee's campaign: "Governor Huckabee plays 'Sweet Home Alabama.' Does that mean Lynyrd Skynyrd is endorsing him? He plays 'Louie Louie.' Does that mean The Kingsmen are endorsing him?"
  • For many years Boston was the best selling debut album in the US with 17 million sales. However their record was broken on September 23, 2008 when the Recording Industry Association of America certified Guns N' Roses' debut set Appetite for Destruction for 18 million sales.
  • The song returned to the UK singles chart in 2010 as a result of its use in a TV commercial for Barclaycard. The ad was a follow-up campaign to the one that soundtracked the Bellamy Brothers track "Let Your Love Flow," which helped the song back to #21 in November 2008.

When you flood in front the other
Keep breathing just like they taught you
You politely asked to take a walk with me
I would've married you there underneath the tree
    Is it real this thing?
    Is it real this thing?
    I could make you happy
I could make you love me
    I could disappear completely
I could be your love song
    I could be long gone
I could be a ghost in your eardrum When You Sleep
    Will it be with me?
When you sleep will it be with me?

I swore I saw you in my dream
All dressed in white, and white smile
You politely asked to take a walk with me
And I married you there underneath the tree
Can you feel the beat in my heartbeat beat through me?
Can you feel the beat in my heartbeat beat through?
I could make you happy, I could make you love me
    I could disappear completely
I could be your love song
    I could be long gone
I could be a ghost in your eardrum when you sleep
    Will it be with me?
When you sleep will it be with me?

How did I miss you when I didn't know you?

  • Lambert wrote this song by herself the day after she met her partner. She explained to American Songwriter magazine: "It's about that moment when you've found your person, that person that makes you feel like you've been holding your breath your whole life, and you've finally had your first real deep breath. And you sort of fabricated this feeling in your head over and over with all these relationships, so do you trust yourself that this is really the real thing? Could it possibly be that person? And it totally is. It could still go either way, and you hope they feel the same way."
  • Lambert explained the lyric: "I can be a ghost in your eardrum when you sleep:" "I think it's that feeling when someone gets stuck in your memory," she said. "And you can still hear that person, though they're not talking. That's what that feeling is."

    Countdown commencing, fire one
Five, four, three, two, one, zero, we have liftoff
    We just gotta fly

    Ooh ooh
    Ah ah
    Ooh ooh
    Ah ah

Spotlight magnetic razor rhythm laser love
    Guitar, drums, load up, stun!

Rocket, baby, guitar, drums, light up
    We're gonna fly, rocket yeah
Satellite of love, we're gonna fly
    Rocket yeah, satellite of love
    Rocket yeah!

    Rocket Song Chart
  • The title is a play on words: Rocket/Rock It. They did the same thing on "Armageddon it": Armageddon It/Are you getting it?
  • When played backward, the voice at the beginning says "We're fighting with the gods of war." This is a reference to another track on the album: "Gods Of War."
  • This song sampled drum beats from the Royal Drummers of Burundi. Lead singer Joe Elliott has explained that they decided to sample the drums as "it would take 16 people playing tom-toms to play the sound live." He'd first heard them on a tape while having a meal on a barge in Holland. The Royal Burundi Drummers are a percussion ensemble from the African country of Burundi, whose hereditary vocation is to play for the Tutsi kings. Beginning in the 1960s they have toured the world. After an album was released a French producer, Michel Bernholc, took one of the tracks, added piano, clavinet and guitar and renamed it "Burundi Black." It became a steady seller and an influence in the early 1980s when Adam Ant, among others, borrowed their style.
  • The line following the word "Rocket" in the chorus is "satellite of love." This came from the title of a 1972 song by Lou Reed. When Def Leppard lead singer Joe Elliott heard the title "Rocket," Reed's song was the first thing he thought of.
  • In the instrumental break, names of other Def Leppard songs are said backwards.
  • A remixed version called The Lunar Mix was also released.
  • This was the first album Def Leppard recorded after their drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a car accident. Allen used a modified drum kit and was able to construct his drum parts in the studio using overdubs. Performing live was a bigger challenge, but Allen was able to pull it off, using his left foot and programmed fills to make up for his lost appendage.
  • This song is shortened by more than two minutes on the Vault: Greatest Hits album. The second verse and the long interlude have been completely cut out. (thanks, Ricky - Los Angeles, CA)

    In Your Arms Lyrics

    I feel like Superman
    They gonna remember me
    I think I know I can
Who says it's hard to reach
Who's gonna stop me on the road to success
    I don't know

They tried to break me down
But I'm still on my feet
    This city's full of life
So why is it hard to breathe
Oh why did God create this world so unfair
    I don't know

    Sometimes I feel like I can't run, I can't crawl
And sometimes I feel like I ain't nothing at all
Life is a journey where you stumble and fall
    But I'm okay

When I lie down In Your Arms
    Oh oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh oh
When I lie down in your arms
    Oh oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh oh
When I lie down in your arms

    I feel like moving back
    Sometimes it's hard to dream
The life I chose is past
    It's moving without me
Who doesn't want a machine so they can go back in time
    I don't know

My time went by too fast
There's no one left but me
I've got a nine to five
And it gets the best of me
This is the life I'm gonna live to the end
    But I'm okay

When I lie down in your arms
    Oh oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh oh

    Blaze of Glory Lyrics

I wake up in the morning
And I raise my weary head
I've got an old coat for a pillow
And the earth was last night's bed
    I don't know where I'm going
Only God knows where I've been
I'm a devil on the run
    A six gun lover
    A candle in the wind

When you're brought into this world
They say you're born in sin
Well at least they gave me something
I didn't have to steal or have to win
Well they tell me that I'm wanted
    Yeah, I'm a wanted man
I'm a colt in your stable
I'm what Cain was to Abel
Mister catch me if you can

I'm going out in a Blaze of Glory
Take me now but know the truth
I'm going out in a blaze of glory
    Lord I never drew first
    But I drew first blood
    I'm no one's son
    Call me young gun

    You ask about my conscience
And I offer you my soul
You ask if I'll grow to be a wise man
Well I ask if I'll grow old
You ask me if I've known love
And what it's like to sing songs in the rain
    Well, I've seen love come
And I've seen it shot down
I've seen it die in vain

Shot down in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
'Cause I'm going down in a blaze of glory
    Lord I never drew first
    But I drew first blood
    I'm the devil's son
    Call me young gun

Each night I go to bed
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
No I ain't looking for forgiveness
But before I'm six foot deep
Lord, I got to ask a favor
    And hope you'll understand
'Cause I've lived life to the fullest
Let this boy die like a man
    Staring down a bullet
Let me make my final stand

Shot down in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
I'm going out in a blaze of glory
    Lord I never drew first
    But I drew first blood
    And I'm no one's son
    Call me young gun
    I'm a young gun
    Young gun, yeah yeah yeah

  • This was featured in the movie Young Guns II, starring Emilio Estevez. According to an article in Entertainment Weekly, Bon Jovi wrote the song after borrowing a script from the movie from his friend Estevez. Jon showed up on the set in New Mexico with an acoustic guitar, and played the song for the film's screenwriter John Fusco, who had used "Wanted Dead Or Alive" as "Mood Music" while writing the first Young Guns. Bon Jovi played the song for Fusco, who loved it and put it in the movie.
  • In this song, the singer is determined to fight to his death, knowing he will be remembered for his bravery.
  • Jon Bon Jovi recorded this as a solo project while he was taking a break from his band. Not only did he branch out from the group, but he also made a foray into acting, appearing in Young Guns II as a pit inmate who is shot back into the pit. He had appeared as an actor many times since, including roles in the movies U-571 and Pay It Forward, and the TV shows Sex and the City and Ally McBeal.
  • This was nominated for, but did not win an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1991, losing to Madonna's "Sooner or Later" from Dick Tracy. Jon Bon Jovi got the band back together to perform this at the Academy Awards telecast.
  • Bon Jovi ended up recording a whole album of songs inspired by Young Guns II, which was released a week after the film and also called Blaze of Glory. It was his first solo album, and it sold over 2 million copies. To play on the album, Jon recruited some big names, including Elton John, Little Richard and Jeff Beck, who played slide guitar on this track. Randy Jackson also appeared on the album and played bass guitar on this track. Jackson said on American Idol that it was his second best performance ever. He didn't disclose what he felt was his best performance.
  • Danny Kortchmar, who co-wrote many of Don Henley's hits, produced this track, as well as the entire Blaze Of Glory album, with Jon Bon Jovi. "We were having a great time with the musicians we were playing with and we were just having a ball in the studio," Kortchmar told us .

Shortly after they finished the project, Kortchmar was asked to produce the Hall & Oates song "So Close," so he brought Jon along with him. They did such a good job on the track that they were given composer credits on the song, which made #11 in America.
  • This was #1 in Australia for six weeks.
  • The song won a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song.
  • This was included on the 1994 Bon Jovi greatest hits album Cross Road.
  • The music video, directed by Wayne Isham, was shot atop thousand-foot cliffs outside Moab, Utah. Everything needed for the Western-styled shoot was flown in by helicopter. To save the hassle of flying to and from a hotel, Jon and the crew camped out in the desert heights for three days.

    The Stranger Lyrics

    The plane comes down
    Behind enemy lines
The stars shine obscenely above you
You don't speak the language but
    You've learned your lines
And you have a gift for making people love you

    Now you're a stranger,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better
Till you feel nothing at all

You follow the river until you reach the top
Sleeping rough getting closer to the target
The nights and days have murdered all
Keeping you down, you dreaming like
Of all the things you'll have to forget

    Now you're a strange,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better
Till you feel nothing at all
    Now you're a STRANGER,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better

There is a billboard by the station
And behind it is the drop
You have one last thing you have to do
If you want all this to stop
Just remember who your friends are
Keep in mind you are the lone
Look inside the envelope, you're never going home

    Now you're a stranger,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better
Till you feel nothing at all
    Now you're a stranger,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better

  • This song was inspired by vocalist Torquil Campbell's reading about the public school educated British/Soviet double agent Kim Philby, who was one of the most notorious traitors in UK history. "To be English is to have secrets; to be a stranger; so in a way I guess this song is about me," Campbell told The Line Of Best Fit . "But it really started with an image of a parachute in the night sky, and it went from there."
  • Murray Lightburn from The Dears plays the guitar on the track. "You could argue that me and him are the darkest f--kers on the Montreal music scene," said Campbell. "It's all a bit dark, but quite velvety. Like a nice mug of cocoa with some cyanide in it."

    Livin' on a Prayer Lyrics

    Once upon a time
    Not so long ago

Tommy used to work on the docks
    Union's been on strike
He's down on his luck, it's tough, so tough
Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man, she brings home her pay
    For love, for love

She says we've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love, we'll give it a shot

    Whooah, we're half way there
    Livin' on a Prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it, I swear
    Livin' on a prayer

Tommy's got his six string in hock
Now he's holding in what he used
To make it talk, o tough, it's tough
    Gina dreams of running away
When she cries in the night
Tommy whispers baby it's okay, someday

We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love, we'll give it a shot

    Whooah, we're half way there
    Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it, I swear
    Livin' on a prayer

We've got to hold on ready or not
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got

    Whooah, we're half way there
    Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it, I swear

Livin' on a Prayer Song Chart
  • The follow up to Bon Jovi's #1 hit "You Give Love A Bad Name," this song tells the story of Tommy and Gina, two kids working to make it on their own despite constant hardships. It struck a chord with America's youth, especially the ones from New Jersey. The characters in the song relate to the working class fans Bon Jovi played to. "Tommy" works on the docks, while "Gina" works in a diner.
  • Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote this with Desmond Child , a prolific songwriter who was brought in by the record company to give them a more commercial sound like he did for Kiss on "I Was Made For Lovin' You."

The characters Tommy and Gina were based on a real life situation Desmond encountered in the late '70s with his then girlfriend, Maria Vidal, who he was living with. According to the notes in his Desmond Child & Rouge: Runners In The Night album, Desmond was a New York taxi cab driver and Maria was a waitress in a diner. (thanks, Gavin Radcliffe - Colchester, United Kingdom)
  • Derek Shulman, who was the lead singer and multi-instrumentalist in the band Gentle Giant, signed Bon Jovi to Mercury Records. In our 2009 interview with Derek, he said: "Slippery When Wet was a really well-constructed pop album. When it was done, I knew in my gut that it was gonna be this big. Because it was the right time, the right place, the right artist. And I had learned some of the business side from being in the business that long, and also having a musical background, I knew that this was gonna be that big. And in fact I also put them together with a co-writer called Desmond Child, who could write great choruses. Here's me looking at Desmond Child and I'm thinking, Man, I wish I would have had choruses like they could write." (Check out the full Gentle Giant interview with Derek and his brother Ray Shulman)
  • At first, Jon Bon Jovi wanted to leave this off the Slippery When Wet album, thinking it wasn't good enough. According to Jon, a meeting with a group of teenagers changed his mind and it was added to the album.
  • Richie Sambora used a talkbox on this, which gave it a very distinctive sound. A talkbox is an electronic device that allows a guitar player to make distorted sounds with his mouth. Peter Frampton is famous for using one on his 1976 album Frampton Comes Alive, but the technique lost popularity a few years later. When Bon Jovi released this, it was the first time many young people heard a song featuring a talkbox. Peter Frampton builds all of Richie Sambora's talkboxes for him.

Jon Bon Jovi told Q magazine December 2009 about the difficulties of using a talkbox: "You know that thing is not very easy to play. Basically everything gets fed through a one-inch tube that goes in your mouth. Then you try to sing through it into a live mic. I tried it once. It will damn near take your face off. Your eyeballs are being dislodged from their sockets, man."
  • The album was going to be called "Wanted Dead Or Alive" (another song on the album) and show the band on the cover dressed as cowboys. After doing the photo shoot in a mine shaft, the band decided they were taking it too seriously, changed the title to "Slippery When Wet," and found a Jersey girl with big boobs to wear a wet T-shirt for the cover. When parents' groups protested the cover, they changed it to a wet trash bag with the title written on it.
  • This opens with a 14-second synthesizer note. You could get away with that in the '80s.
  • In a 2007 interview with Time magazine, Jon Bon Jovi was asked what song showed "The Real You." His response: "I think if there was only one, it would be a tough choice between 'Livin' On A Prayer' and 'Wanted Dead Or Alive.' Maybe because the themes of 'Wanted' are a little more universal, it makes 'Prayer' that much more unique. There is nothing that you can say is derivative about the song. It is its own entity." He went on to say: "I think I find more strength in faith than I do in organized religion. 'Livin' On A Prayer' is most certainly nondenominational."
  • In the 2000 Bon Jovi song "It's My Life," the two characters from this track are mentioned in the line, "This is for the ones who stood their ground, for Tommy and Gina who never backed down." Sambora used a talkbox on that song as well.
  • Bon Jovi played a slow version of this September 21, 2001 as part of the "Tribute To Heroes" telethon to benefit victims of the terrorist attacks on the US. Almost 60 million people watched the show, which included performances by U2, Sting, Billy Joel, Mariah Carey, and Neil Young. Celebrities answering phones included Selma Hayek, Jack Nicholson, and Brad Pitt. The slow version was also performed at the "Concert For New York" to honor the rescue workers at The World Trade Center.
  • Bon Jovi performed this, along with "It's My Life," at the closing ceremonies of the 2002 winter Olympics.
  • On VH1's The Greatest Songs of the '80s special, this was voted the best song of the decade. (thanks, Dawson - Draper, UT)
  • In March 2008 this returned to the UK charts at #70, thanks to its use by Gareth Gates on the celebrity Ice Skating show Dancing On Ice. Despite the interest stirred up by the use of this track by Gates, the routine resulted in his elimination.
  • In an interview with The Guardian November 5, 2009, Jon Bon Jovi was asked whether the Tommy character was a strike-breaker. He replied: "No. He just lost his job - it wasn't that he crossed the [picket] line. The industry left the town and he didn't get the job back. It was a fictional character. The inspiration was a young couple who got pregnant and gave up everything they had, but that didn't read right, so we changed the story."
  • Jon Bon Jovi told The London Times in May 2010 that he never gets tired of singing this song: "Not when I see the jet with my name on it."
  • At the 2010 Grammy Awards, Bon Jovi performed this song as a result of a fan vote. As the show progressed, viewers were asked to choose which song the band would perform: "Livin' On A Prayer," "It's My Life" or "Always." Vote totals were not divulged, but it's likely that this fan-favorite won in a landslide. Richie Sambora talked about it after the show: "Jon came up with the idea of actually doing a three-song medley, and we opened up with 'We Weren't Born To Follow.' And then we went into the Grammy song with Jennifer Nettles that we won - 'Who Says You Can't Go Home.' And then we had - which I thought was the interesting part of it - a contest. So the fans actually voted on the song we would play. It was legit, man. We didn't know 'til the last minute what we were gonna to do. We had them all ready to go. We rehearsed them all and then at the last minute, that's what they told us - they said, 'Livin' On A Prayer' was the one." (thanks, DeeTheWriter - Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation)
  • Classic songs often make their way back to the charts years later if they are used in commercials, movies or TV shows, or otherwise granted some fresh, high-profile attention. Thanks to a change in Billboard's method for tabulating the Hot 100, however, this song made it back to the chart thanks to a viral video.

In February 2013, YouTube views and other streams became a factor in the Hot 100, resulting in "Harlem Shake" hitting the top spot. In October, a video was posted of basketball fan Jeremy Fry dancing to "Livin' On A Prayer" during a stoppage in play at a Boston Celtics' home game from March 2009. The Celtics were the defending NBA champs and doing very well at the time; Fry's performance embodied the camaraderie and enthusiasm in the arena, as he spontaneously used his two minutes of glory to glide down an aisle, singing to delighted onlookers along the way.

Fry's dance routine drew millions of worldwide views, and on November 20, the song charted at #25, 26 years after if first appeared.
  • "I think the most interesting part of that song, it was the first time we ever used characters," Richie Sambora told Fuse TV. "And quite frankly it was because in our life at that point, in that juncture of time, we were 26 years old. I was. Jon was probably 24 at the time. And all we knew at that point was being on the road and women, so that's predominantly what we kind of sang about in those days. Then we decided to jump into the social lyric with 'Livin' on a Prayer,' and bring in two characters, Tommy and Gina, which essentially were some blue collar people trying to make ends meet through life, and essentially that was my parents. It could've been Jon and I in that particular part of time. It could've been anything, but what that did, they became everybody across the world. Because at a time, every couple, no matter what, is going through that hardship where they're trying to make ends meet and it's not coming easy. They gotta get over that hurdle. So that was a very inspirational song, and it's morphed and transformed throughout the years."
  • Sambora on resurrecting his old talkbox for the record: "I had put it down for many, many years, and for some reason in the studio that night, I just said, 'I'm just gonna try this whacked idea on you guys, and you're probably gonna think it's crazy but it might be really cool.' And as soon as it sounded everybody just went, Hit. Record."

    I Wish You Would Lyrics

I Wish You Would Song Chart
  • This song finds Taylor regretting the way she broke up with an ex-lover. A part of her wishes he would run back to her and, maybe, they will get back together. It sends a completely different message to the commitment-phobic beau in "All You Had to Do Was Stay."
  • Taylor told Rolling Stone the song is about an ex who bought a house two blocks from hers (whom she implies was Harry Styles). Her liner notes message for this song state: "He Drove Past Her Street Each Night."
  • Taylor starts the song with her ex driving past her house.

It's 2 am, in your car
Windows down, past my street the memories start

The implication is that Taylor's former boyfriend has been up all night thinking.

The singer frequently uses 2 a.m. in her songs, having also given the time a shout out in "Breathe," "The Way I Loved You," "Mary's Song (Oh My My My)," and "Enchanted."
  • The song is one of three 1989 tracks written and produced by Taylor with fun.'s Jack Antonoff (the others are "Out Of The Woods" and "You R In Love.")
  • This originally sampled a snare from Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy," which came about from Swift and Antonoff bonding over the '80s pop group. "The moment when we shifted from friendship into working together was when we were talking about the snare drum on Fine Young Cannibals' 'She Drives Me Crazy,'" Antonoff told Rolling Stone. "Taylor brought it up first, and I was like, 'Holy s--t, you're not going to believe this: I just sampled that snare in a track.' I played her one second of it on my iPhone, and she was like, 'Send me that track.' That became a song called 'I Wish You Would.'"
  • There are three bonus tracks on the deluxe edition of 1989 that are actually voice memos recorded to Taylor's phone that were later turned into songs (This song, "I Know Places" and "Blank Space"). We hear her explain: "This is a song I did with Jack Antonoff, and Jack is one of my friends and so were hanging out and he pulled out his phone and goes 'I made this amazing track the other day. It's so cool, I love these guitar sounds.' And he played it for me and immediately I could hear this finished song in my head, and I just said 'Please, please let me have that. Let me play with is, send it to me.'"

"And so he sent it to me and I was on tour and this was me playing the track on my laptop recording me singing the vocal into my phone and it ended up being a song called 'I Wish You Would,' because Jack wrote back and said 'I love that.' So this is another way of writing, it's writing to track."
