Roxanne Song Chart

This song is about a man who falls in love with a prostitute. Sting got the idea after walking through the red-light district of Paris when the band was in town to play a club called The Nashville. He imagined what it would be like to fall in love with one of the prostitutes.

This was the first major-label release by The Police, who were struggling at the time. A year earlier, they released the single "Fall Out" on an independent label owned by Stewart Copeland's brother (and the band's manager), Miles. It was a flop, and the group felt a lot of pressure to produce something that would keep them off the dole.

When they convened at Surrey Sound Studios outside of London in January 1978, they recorded the song with producer Nigel Gray, who owned the studio. Sting liked the song but didn't think it would be a hit, as it was far more brooding than their other material. Miles Copeland thought differently - he was far more impressed with "Roxanne" than with anything else they recorded at those sessions, and insisted it be the single. Miles got a distribution deal for the song with A&M Records, getting no advance, only royalties from sales.

The song was released in the UK on April 7, but didn't garner much attention. It was also largely ignored in the US when it was released there on February 24, 1979, but The Police soldiered on with a tour of America anyway. When a disc jockey in Austin stared playing the song, it got a great response and other radio stations added it to their playlists. The song became a minor hit, peaking at #32 on April 28. The song also got some attention in the UK around this time, and it made #12 about a year after it was first released.

The intro to the song contains one of the great happy accidents in rock history. There was an upright piano in the studio, which Sting sat on thinking the lid was closed. Tape was rolling for his vocal, so the sound of his butt hitting the piano and his subsequent laughter were recorded. These sounds were mixed into the intro, providing a unique texture.

Sting chose the name Roxanne because it has a rich history behind it. Roxanne was the name of Alexander The Great's wife and Cyrano de Bergerac's girlfriend.

Police guitarist Andy Summers made a key contribution to this song. In our interview with Summers , he explained: "'Roxanne' is so identified by that guitar at the beginning - the first verse before he starts singing. It's immediately identifiable."

The Police performed this when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. With the exception of a drunken jam at Sting's wedding in 1992, it was the first time they played together since they broke up in 1986 over personal differences. At the ceremony, guitarist Andy Summers joked, "I'd like to make it very clear that there is no ego in our band whatsoever."

The beat on this song is a classic fusion of rock and reggae, but Sting considers is more of a tango.

In 1987, Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah starred in the movie Roxanne, which is based on the Cyrano DeBergerac story of a dramatist with a big nose who falls for a beautiful woman. The song was not used in the film.

A remake of this song was featured in the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge. Christian (Ewan McGregor) sings this about Satine (Nicole Kidman) when he becomes enraged in a fit of jealousy. And guess what? They made it into a tango, so this song can no longer be mistaken for a reggae beat... Sting must be very proud. (thanks, Kristy - La Porte City, IA)

Sting performs this at most of his concerts, as it's one of his favorites and it always gets a great audience response. He played it at Live Aid in 1985.

In the 1982 movie 48 Hours, Eddie Murphy sings a very off-key version of the song in a jail cell.

This song is the basis for a popular drinking game of the same title: men drink when it says "Roxanne," women drink when it says "Red Light." (thanks, Alex - Charleston, WV)

When The Police reunited in 2007, their first public performance came at the Grammy Awards, where they played this to open the show.

A version by San Francisco singer-songwriter Juliet Simms debuted at #86 on the Hot 100 in April 2012 after she performed the song on the reality music show The Voice.

The original sheet of lyrics for this song is decorated with Sting's random doodles, most dealing with the passage of time. They are "three clocks - one at five to four, another at ten past six, and one sidelong that looks to be showing eight o'clock - a sundial, an hourglass, five sets of five-bar gates that prisoners use to mark the passing of days, some kind of whirlwind vortex spinning in the top right-hand corner, and a spear or an arrowhead. I imagine I was drawing these as I was listening back to various takes of the vocals, but I don't know what they mean," Sting wrote in Lyrics By Sting. (These illustrations can be seen on the back cover of the book).

"I sing 'Roxanne' every night," Sting told Daniel Rachel for the 2013 book The Art of Noise: Conversations with Great Songwriters. "There's always a little inflection that is new or a possibility that opens it out. It's not my job to reproduce a record that was made thirty years ago. I use that and I respect that, but it's only a template. It's that jazz mentality. You use the head of the song just as a starting point."

Pain Killer Song Chart

The title track of Little Big Town's sixth album, the quartet knew they were going to name the record after this tune way on into the recording process. "That song is really kind of tongue-in-cheek — 'be the person that numbs my pain,'" Karen Fairchild told Rolling Stone Country. "We started talking about tying that thread through the whole record, to ease your pain. Don't we want the whole record to do that for people, anyway? Whether it's a sad moment, or a song that's more thoughtful and has a lot more substance in the lyric, we want music to take us away. Pain Killer fits, that's the common thread through all the songs."

The song's Roger Pistile-directed music video was filmed at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, where the Painkiller drink was invented.

The clip shows the Little Big Town quartet singing underwater. "We've done so much over the years, it's hard to find something new that we've never done before, and this we've never done before. We've never sang all glammed up under water," said the band's Kimberly Schlapman. "It is a little more difficult. The hardest part is staying underwater instead of poppin' up and floatin'. That was the biggest challenge."

Karen Fairchild added: "Especially when you have on full gowns in the water. You might not be able to tell that, but…Kimberly and I had on like full gowns and then we got into the water. Roger Pistole did such a great job. He's a great, creative director."

Little Big Town's Phillip Sweet said of the song: "It's not what you think it would sound like when you hear the word 'pain killer.' You think, 'Oh, this is going to be like a ballad or a heart wrenching country song,' but it's so not that. It's amazingly fun."

Back On The Chain Gang Song Chart

This is a tribute to James Honeyman-Scott, the Pretenders guitarist who died of a drug overdose in 1982 at age 26. Scott's death was followed by bass player Pete Farndon's 10 months later. Farndon had been kicked out of the band because of his drug problems and died of an overdose.

The "picture of you" Chrissie Hynde sings about is a picture she found in her wallet of Ray Davies, leader of the band The Kinks. Hynde and Davies were a couple and had a daughter together. This song started off about him, but the meaning changed when Honeyman-Scott died.

This is a very emotional song. Chrissie Hynde sometimes tears up when performing it.

A Chain Gang is a group of convicts who are chained together while they do manual labor, usually outside.

This was the first Pretenders single featuring Billy Bremner and Tony Butler, who replaced Farndon and Honeyman-Scott.

My City Was Gone Song Chart

This song is about Akron, Ohio, where Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders was raised. Akron was an industrial city known as the "Rubber Capital of the World," which despite the smell of burning rubber, was a place Chrissie enjoyed growing up. In the '70s, it was gritty but vibrant, and it had a thriving rock scene with bands like Pere Ubu, Devo, The Bizarros, and Jane Aire & The Belvederes.

Hynde would augment her musical education with the R&B she could find on Detroit radio stations, and would seek out rock music from the likes of Lou Reed and The Rolling Stones. She did a lot of traveling and played in a lot of bands before forming the Pretenders in 1978 when she relocated to England. Returning to Akron in the '80s, she was disappointed in what the city had become: shopping malls and segregation. "Everything's just huge masses of granite blocks, and everything's outsized. It might look good on a drawing, but it doesn't seem to apply to human life," said Hynde.

The conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh uses the opening riff of this song as theme music for his radio show. Limbaugh and Hynde have radically different political views, but she cannot stop him from using the song as long as the show continues to pay royalties.

This was released as the B-side of "Back On The Chain Gang."

The album had been out for a year and a half before this became a hit. It was the third single from Crazy Town. They first released harder songs "Toxic" and "Darkside," which flopped. Crazy Town toured with Buckcherry, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Methods Of Mayhem for two years before this became a hit.

Crazy Town lead singer Shifty Shellshock (Seth Binzer) wrote this song about the girl he was seeing at the time. Most of the group's songs were full of macho swagger, which made her wary of Shellshock, so he set out to write something more romantic.

The two were living together at the time, and she collected butterflies. As Shellshock tells it, he was lying on the bed, thinking about what to call his song, when he spotted a butterfly on the ceiling. That gave him the title, and he later came up with the line, "You're my butterfly, sugar baby." He brought the idea to the band, and they loved the idea; they recorded the demo that very evening.

Unfortunately, things didn't work out for Shellshock and his butterfly girl - they were together for three years before a tough breakup.

This samples "Pretty Little Ditty" from The Red Hot Chili Peppers album Mother's Milk. After writing the lyrics, Shellshock asked his producer to give it a mellow feel similar to "Under The Bridge" by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

This is an uncharacteristic pop song for Crazy Town. Their music is typically more aggressive rap-rock, but this was a huge crossover hit. It was played on rock, pop, and alternative radio stations.

MTV featured this on their 2001 spring break coverage from Cancun.

The video was directed by a team that worked on the movies The Matrix and What Dreams May Come. It is based on the images from What Dreams May Come.

Many bands resent their first hit if it gets overexposed and does not really represent the sound of the band, but Shellshock still loves this. He has fond memories of how it made them very popular.

This was one of the songs targeted by the Federal Trade Commission in 2001 as inappropriate for underage listeners. The commission wanted advertising for this and many other songs to contain parental advisory warnings.

Shifty Shellshock's then-girlfriend Cynthia is in the music video.

Epic Mazur wore a DARE T-shirt in the video. The irony is apparent when you consider that Epic has been to rehab to avoid charges of cocaine possession and continued to smoke marijuana.

In 2002, this was honored by two different music publishing organizations. Crazy Town belongs to ASCAP, who gave them an award, but because this samples a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, and they are represented by rival company BMI, that organization also honored this. The awards indicate this got a lot of airplay on radio and MTV.

This song was inspired by Scherzinger's struggles with an eating disorder. "I guess it's me finally being comfortable and confident enough in my skin where I'm able to really talk about some of the things that I always concealed," she told Digital Spy .

"This is me finally being revealed. I think we all have our own big fat lies," Scherzinger continued. "The lies that we tell ourselves. You know, things aren't always what they seem. I think people will be able to relate to that. Part of where it came from is battling with an eating disorder for many years and recently, in the past few years, it's come out and people were talking to me about that."

Scherzinger explained why she decided to title the album after this song: "I noticed I had not really addressed that on the album and 'Big Fat Lie', I went to (producer) The Dream with that personally and I was like: 'This is a big part of who I am and what has gotten me here. And what has gotten me to this place of strength,'" she said. "I decided to title the album that because things aren't always what they seem. Facing those issues head-on is what has gotten me to my most authentic place now and a courageous place to be able to talk about it a lot and deal with it. Everybody's wanting that, everybody's wanting that peace, everyone's wanting clarity and acceptance in their life."

The title is a Southern expression meaning "At my wit's end," as if things were going so bad you could lose your faith in God. If you were "Losing your religion" over a person, It could also mean losing faith in that person. (thanks, doug - chicago, IL)

Stipe told Rolling Stone magazine: "I wanted to write a classic obsession song. So I did." In addition to calling it a song about "obsession," Stipe has also referred to it as a song about "unrequited love" in which all actions and words of the object of your obsession are scrubbed for hidden meaning and hopeful signs. The lyrics pretty clearly support this: "I thought that I heard you laughing, I thought that I heard you sing. I think I thought I saw you try." (thanks, Redstar - Redding, CT)

This song has its origins in guitarist Peter Buck's efforts to try learn to play the mandolin. When he played back recordings of his first attempts, he heard the riff and thought it might make a good basis for a song. Explaining how the song came together musically, Buck told Guitar School in 1991: "I started it on mandolin and came up with the riff and chorus. The verses are the kinds of things R.E.M. uses a lot, going from one minor to another, kind of like those 'Driver 8' chords. You can't really say anything bad about E minor, A minor, D, and G – I mean, they're just good chords.

We then worked it up in the studio – it was written with electric bass, drums, and mandolin. So it had a hollow feel to it. There's absolutely no midrange on it, just low end and high end, because Mike usually stayed pretty low on the bass. This was when we decided we'd get Peter (Holsapple) to record with us, and he played live acoustic guitar on this one. It was really cool: Peter and I would be in our little booth, sweating away, and Bill and Mike would be out there in the other room going at it. It just had a really magical feel.

And I'm proud to say every bit of mandolin on the record was recorded live – I did no overdubbing. If you listen closely, on one of the verses there's a place where I muffled it, and I thought, well, I can't go back and punch it up, because it's supposed to be a live track. That was the whole idea."

The band claims this is not about religion and loss of faith, although the video is full of religious imagery. Some Catholic groups protested the video.

In 2003, Stipe told Entertainment Weekly, "'Losing My Religion' was a fluke hit. It was a 5-minute song with no chorus and a mandolin as the lead instrument. So for us to hold that as the bar we have to jump over every time we write a song would be ridiculous."

This won the Grammy in 1991 for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

The video was the first to show lead singer Michael Stipe dancing. The director, Tarsem Singh, hung out with the band to get ideas, and when he saw Stipe's spastic dance style, he thought it would look great in the video.

The video is based in part on Gabriel Garcia Marquez' A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings . The novel tells the story about an angel who falls down from heaven and how the people who make money displaying him as a "freak show." Michael Stipe is a big Marquez fan and the whole idea of obsession and unrequited love is the central theme of the author's masterpiece, Love in the Time of Cholera . This was given the working title of "Sugar Cane" when the band demoed it in July 1990 at a studio in Athens.

A common misinterpretation of this song is that it was about John Lennon's death, with the lyrics, "What if all these fantasies come flailing around" being a reference to Lennon's last album Double Fantasy.

Michael Stipe took a laid-back approach with this song: "I remember that I sang this in one go with my shirt off. I don't think any of us had any idea it would ever be ... anything," he noted in Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011. Peter Buck added that Warner Bros. didn't even want the song as a single, and everyone was surprised when it took off. "It changed our world. We went from selling a few million worldwide with Green to over 10 million. It was in that area where we had never been before which isn't bad," he said.

OK Go frontman Damian Kulash said of this futuristic dance-floor banger to Purevolume : "'I Won't Let You Down' is the closest that spaceship OK Go has come to the planet disco. We were playing around with beats and grooves and stumbled upon one of those moments of alchemy where a ball of light just jumps out of the sound. Suddenly there was a flash of Jackson Five and Diana Ross and we knew we had something worth chasing."

The song's music video was shot in an abandoned warehouse in the Japanese city of Chiba, near Tokyo. The visual was directed by OK Go's Damian Kulash and film director Morihiro Harano. It features the band members riding motorized scooter chairs called UNI-CUBs made by Honda, which paid for the film. The clip was filmed in one single shot using an octocopter, a custom "multi-copter camera," which was developed for the project. It took approximately 55 attempts to get it right.

The video pans out over the city of Tokyo for an extra thirty seconds of silence at the end, which the director said was inspired by the Beatles' outros. "You know how, in some of their albums, a bonus track starts to play," Harano told Billboard magazine. "I wanted something that packed a bit more entertainment even after the main part was over."
