Road To Nowhere Lyrics

I was looking back on my life
And all the things I've done to me
I'm still looking for the answers
And I'm still searching for the key

The wreckage of my past keeps haunting me
It just won't leave me alone
I still find it all a mystery
Could it be a dream?
The Road To Nowhere leads to me

Through all the happiness and sorrow
I guess I'd do it all again
Live for today and not tomorrow
It's still the road that never ends

The wreckage of my past keeps haunting me
It just won't leave me alone
I still find it all a mystery
Could it be a dream?
The road to nowhere leads to me

Ah ah, the road to nowhere's gonna pass me by
Ah ah, I hope we never have to say goodbye
I never want to live without you

The wreckage of my past keeps haunting me
It just won't leave me alone
I still find it all a mystery
Could it be a dream?
The road to nowhere leads to me

The road to nowhere leads to me
The road to nowhere leads to me
You got to, got to, got to lead to me
The road to nowhere leads to me
You got to, got to, got to lead to me
You got to, got to, got to lead to me
Ah, the road to nowhere

  • Little May are an Australian folk-rock trio, comprising vocalist Hannah Field and guitarists Liz Drummond and Annie Hamilton. Drummond told Billboard magazine that she penned this song in an hour after the girls had been inspired by listening to Big Scary's "Thinking About You."
  • Field nailed the vocals on her first attempt. "Hannah's lyrics are exactly the same as when she first sang them," Drummond said. "She's good like that. We recorded it on a voice memo and over time, re-jigged the structure and built upon it during rehearsals."

    So Tired Lyrics

Time has come to say goodbye
I know it's gonna make you cry
But you belong to another my love
And half a love that just isn't enough

    I am So Tired
And I just can't wait around for you
    I am so tried
And I always thought we would see it through

I've waited all this time for you
    Believed your promises were true
I keep believing that you mean what you say
    You'll leave tomorrow - now tomorrow's today

And I often sit and wonder why
    You're not with me tonight
I stayed at home remaining true
While you were out with you know who

    I am so tired
And I just can't wait around for you
    I am so tried
And I always thought we would see it through

  • Even the Prince of Darkness needs to slow it down sometimes, and in this ballad, Ozzy finds himself tired of waiting around for his girl, as it dawns on him that she is probably cheating.

A minor hit in the UK, it was one of the first successful ballads Osbourne released, prompting him to mix in more slow songs with his rockers on future albums, letting his sensitive side come forth on songs like "Mama, I'm Coming Home" and "Road To Nowhere."
  • Ozzy was backed up by a string section on this track that was arranged by Louis Clark, famous for his work with Electric Light Orchestra.
  • Like all songs on the Bark at the Moon album, Osbourne is listed as the sole songwriter on "So Tired," but he got significant help with the writing from his guitarist Jake E. Lee and bass player Bob Daisley. In his Songfacts interview, Daisley explained that because of conflicts with publishing companies, he and Lee agreed to forgo credits and royalties in exchange for flat payments.
  • In the video, Ozzy plays all the main characters, like Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor.
  • A piece of glass lodged in Ozzy's throat when he was doing a scene for the video where a mirror breaks. He had to postpone some shows, but did fully recover.

    Air Guitar Lyrics

I never was a cool kid
No one ever really gave a damn what I did
I loved to party, but I never got invited
Alone again so, me, myself and I

    Tried karaoke
But they told me I was only ok
I guess I never should have sang Beyonce or MJ
    So I dropped the mic

    Oh, yeah
All the people in the bar turned 'round and stared
I was on my knees and whipping round my hair
And I knew that I was winning

Close my eyes and see the crowd
But my fingers don't make any sound
    My Air Guitar

I keep it with me night and day
You won't believe the way that I can play
    My air guitar
    Air guitar
    Like this

    (Bom chicka wah wah)

In my head I am a rock star
And I probably date a popstar
A popstar and a model on the side

I know I'll never make it
But tonight I'm good enough to fake it
Bend an imaginary string and break it, replace it
In the backstage of my mind

But I know my friends all think I'm living such a lie
But the lie they think I'm living gets me high
It's the gift that keeps on giving

Close my eyes and see the crowd
But my fingers don't make any sound
    My air guitar

    Jimmy Page and Brian May
Won't believe the way that I can play
    My air guitar
    Air guitar
    Like this

And you think there's nothing there
    It's simply made of air
You laugh but you're just scared
    Try it if you dare

    Air guitar
    Air guitar
I take it with me everywhere
Yeah, but you don't even know it's there
    My air guitar
    Air guitar

Close my eyes and see the crowd
But my fingers don't make any sound
    My air guitar

I keep it with me night and day

  • McBusted are a supergroup comprising Matt Willis and James Bourne of Busted, and Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter of McFly. This is the first single released by the band after they embarked on a huge Arena tour earlier in 2014 selling out an 35 dates and 350,000 tickets.
  • The rock anthem began with Tom Fletcher. "I was like, how has this song never been written before?'" he said.

Fletcher brought his demo to the remaining McBusted members, who immediately fell in love with it and decided to record the tune for their first single. "It's such a brilliant idea for a song," said Matt Willis. " I was furious when Tom came up with it, obviously. I love it."
  • McBusted had to make a dramatic last-minute revision to the song. The original version included a brief sample of the hit "Crazy In Love," where the group sung: "I guess I never shoulda sang Beyoncé - uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh, no, no." But after taking legal advice they decided to drop those lyrics and replace them with a reference to Michael Jackson.
  • McFly and Busted released separate mixes of the song. Both versions were made available on iTunes.

    One Shining Moment Lyrics

    One Shining Moment Song Chart
  • This is used as the rollout to the Men's Basketball Final 4 coverage on CBS at the end of the tournament. CBS started playing this with their video montages at the end of the games in 1987, after reporter Armen Keteyian suggested they use it.
  • This was written by Barrett, who is a folk singer. It was never released on an album, but several versions are available on the Internet and the song is available as a CD Single on his website: oneshiningmoment.com .
  • Barrett wrote this in 20 minutes after seeing a Larry Bird highlight reel.
  • Barrett: "Writing this song changed my life. Strange how that is so. I mean; the writing came so effortlessly. I knew immediately after that I had something special on my hands. In fact I got up from the piano and went immediately to the phone and called a friend and said... "Glen I just wrote a great song." It was almost like... "where did this come from?" In any case, the song opened all sorts of doors for me in a professional sense. But on a personal note, it also showed me to write about what mattered to me. I mean, I just wrote it because I thought it was worth writing. I learned to trust that. For years I had been listening to what others thought was valid. It was this song that made it clear to me that my job was to write about what I know, and tell the truth about that... Simple."
  • Contrary to popular belief, the first line in the song was not changed from "The Ball is Kicked" to "The Ball is Tipped." David Barrett explained: "My daughter informed me that they claim that the initial line was the ball is kicked. That's not the case. It never was. The original line was, the gun goes off... which I changed to suit the tournament. Ironically - I wrote the song about basketball (after watching Larry Bird) but for some reason (who knows what I was thinking?!?) I didn't write it into the original first line. And so having the first line fall into place as it did was poetic and true.
The Chicago White Sox used the version with 'The Gun Goes Off' to close their telecast on the final game at Comiskey Park on September 30th, 1990. To my knowledge, this is the ONLY time that this version of the song was aired." (thanks to Bill in Fort Wayne, IN for contacting Mr. Barrett about this song)
  • In 1997, CBS used a version of this recorded by Teddy Pendergrass. It got a horrible response and they returned to the original version, which was sung by Barrett, the next year.
  • CBS often gets requests for people wanting to use this for birthdays, anniversaries, Bar Mitzvahs, and even funerals.
  • The "One Shining Moment" rollout airs at the very end of the show, after interviews, commentary and credits. Occasionally, CBS stations accidentally go to their local news before this runs, thinking that the show is over. Whenever this happens, they get a bunch of viewer complaints and end up airing it the next day to make it up to them.
  • In 2003, when the Syracuse Orangemen won the national championship, CBS changed singers and gave "One Shining Moment" a new look. Luther Vandross, who had been to only one basketball game in his life, was the new singer, and the video didn't have any special effects like glowing basketballs and star trails like it did in previous years. It is believed this was the last song Vandross recorded before his stroke and subsequent death.
  • Barrett hasn't gotten rich off this song, but it has been profitable. According to Barrett, CBS pays him "under $50,000" to use the song each year. Barrett makes his living writing music for TV shows and commercials.
  • A new version by Jennifer Hudson was recorded in Los Angeles for the 2010 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. Hudson said: "The song inspires you. It moves you. It motivates you and helps you reach that goal and that dream." Hudson's producer, Harvey Mason Jr., played for the Arizona team that reached the 1988 Final Four.

Behind Closed Doors, there's never any light
Behind closed doors, there's never any light

Mix a little bit of love and violence
Mix a little bit of truth and lies
I see you, I feel you
Push and pulling me for my alliance
But nothing's ever gonna make things right
I feel you, I see you

The doors close so no one outside hears
But I know the sound of your worst fear
It's cutting through me, it's suffocating me
Behind closed doors, there's a lifetime to forget

Mix a little bit of our denial
Mix a little bit of black and white
I feel you, I need you
Growing up I learned from your defiance
But nothing's ever gonna make things right
I need you, I feel you

The doors close so no one outside hears
But I know the sound of your worst fear
It's cutting through me, it's suffocating me

  • This song deals with the suffering that presents itself when no one else is looking. Singer Leigh Kakaty told The Birmingham News: "Behind closed doors is where a lot of people's pain starts from. If you can give people a song they can relate to, maybe they can change their life and make it happier by moving forward."
  • The video is the third in a trilogy, all directed by Johan Carlen. The clip is actually the first portion of a story that has been told in reverse, starting with "Trenches" and "Deal With The Devil."

The trilogy follows a woman who battles her demons. In the "Behind Closed Doors" clip, we see her cutting herself and destroying her surroundings as she lashes out.

  • This song is featured in the Kevin Costner movie Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, where it plays over the credits. It was written to order for the movie, initially by American film composer Michael Kamen, with the middle eight, break, outro and arrangement added by Adams and producer Mutt Lange. Adams used a line in the movie, "I do it for you..." as the basis for the song, and they had it written in about an hour.
  • Adams has said that initially, this song didn't meet with Hollywood approval, as the film company wanted the song to have instrumentation in line with the films' era - lutes, mandolins, and the like. The film company relented, but still buried the song midway through the credits, apparently unaware of the huge hit they had on their hands.
  • This is one of the most successful singles of all time, selling over 3 million copies. It was #1 for 16 weeks in the UK (from 13th July to 26th October 1991) and 7 weeks in the US. (thanks, Matthew - Shrewsbury, England)
  • A longer version of this song was used as the B-side to Adam's next single, "Can't Stop This Thing We Started."
  • This brought Adams a huge Adult Contemporary audience, but alienated many fans of his rock music. He continued to record dramatic ballads for romantic movies: In 1993, he sang "All For Love" with Rod Stewart and Sting for The 3 Musketeers, and in 1995 he recorded "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?" for Don Juan DeMarco.
  • This went to #1 in 30 countries. It also won a Grammy for Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television in 1992.
  • Some of the hits Mutt Lange produced before lending his talents to this track include "Back In Black" for AC/DC and "Photograph" by Def Leppard. Bryan Adams told us about working with Lange: "Mutt is great to work with because he is committed to making sure the songs have the best of everything before they go out into the world. We've had three number one records together and many good times, a true friend." (Check out our interview with Bryan Adams.)
  • Brandy covered this on her 1998 album Never Say Never. (thanks, Daisy - Ikast, Denmark)
  • Michael Kamen had originally wanted the song to be as if it were Maid Marian singing to Robin Hood. However, this initial version was deemed so bland that Kate Bush, Annie Lennox and Lisa Stansfield all turned it down.

And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that. Huh! Me workin' for you!"
    Whoa-oh-oh

    Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

And the sign said anybody caught trespassin' would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and-a yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you
    the
    right?"
"To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in"
"If God was here he'd tell you to your face, Man, you're some kinda sinner"

    Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

Now, hey you, mister, can't you read?
You've got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat
You can't even watch, no you can't eat
You ain't supposed to be here
The sign said you got to have a membership card to get inside
    Ugh!

And the sign said, "Everybody welcome. Come in, kneel down and pray"
But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all, I didn't have a

So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign
I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine."

  • Written by Five Man Electrical Band lead singer Les Emmerson, this song is a prescient look at class divisions and property rights. Emmerson wrote the song after taking a road trip on Route 66 in California, where he noticed a plethora of billboards that obscured the beautiful scenery. This posed a question: Who is allowed to put up signs that interfere with nature? This led to another query: Who gets to make the rules that appear on so many signs?

The song gave voice to those without power or property rights, which in many cases were young people.
  • Five Man Electrical Band are a Canadian group, Formed in the '60s as The Staccatos. "Signs" was included on their second album in 1970, but not considered single-worthy by their record label, as it didn't fit a standard pop format.

In 1970, it was issued as the B-side to the single "Hello Melinda Goodbye," which made #55 on the Canadian chart. Disk jockeys preferred the flip side, however, and started playing "Signs," which was then released as an A-side in 1971. It made #4 in Canada but took off in America, reaching #3 in August. The follow-up, "Absolutely Right," also did well in America, reaching #26.
  • This song starts with a line that became one of the most memorable in rock: "And the sign said, 'Long-haired freaky people need not apply.'"

By starting with the word "And," we feel that we are picking up a story, and it's clear that the singer has put a lot of thought into this. The first verse is a classic tale of how looks can be deceiving, as the difference between an "upstanding man" and a hippie can be something as superficial as hair.

The next verse finds the singer looking at a "no trespassing" sign and questioning its authority. This resonates with anyone who has seen beautiful beaches, vistas, and other points of nature marked as private property, often with nobody there to enjoy it.

We then enter a private club with a strict dress code, and we hear the line most willful wanderers have been confronted with: "You ain't supposed to be here."

Finally, we end up in church, which brings God into our story. If ever there is something that is open to all, it it God, but even in church, a donation is called for. At this point, our hero turns the tables and makes his own sign, thanking God for the wonder of life.
  • Tesla revived this song in 1990 when they recorded a live, acoustic version for their album Five Man Acoustical Jam, which was recorded at the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia on July 2, 1990.

The band was on tour with Mötley Crüe, opening for the rockers on the Dr. Feelgood tour. July 2 was an off-day, so Tesla booked the acoustic show and had each band member pick a cover song to perform. Lead singer Jeff Keith picked "Signs," a song he grew up listening to in Oklahoma. His bandmates, however, didn't know the song, so Jeff had to round up a copy so they could learn it.

The song was the highlight of the performance, and the set was so well-received that it was released as an album, which they titled Five Man Acoustical Jam as an allusion to the original artist. Released as a single ahead of the album, the song made #2 on the Mainstream Rock chart, but didn't crack the Hot 100. When the album started selling and MTV began the video, the song was re-released, making #8 on the Hot 100 in April 1991.
  • Tesla's version was one of the first acoustic hit songs of the '90s and helped launch the "Unplugged" trend. MTV ramped up their series of Unplugged concerts shortly after Tesla's cover became a hit.
  • The line, "If God was here he'd tell you to your face, Man, you're some kinda sinner" has a double-meaning, as "Man" could be just a throwaway expression, but could also be about man as a species.
  • In Tesla's unedited version they replace the phrase "Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind" with "F--kin' up the scenery, breakin' my mind."

It was my fault, my move, and my wine
    I see the sun now
    And it still shines
    But it was dark out
    And I held the cards

    Ooh, I was the dealer

    I gave it all out
If I’d really known you then
You’d a had to watch out

    I’ll be the dancer
    You be the player
    I’ll just almost hold you
    You just almost stay here
    I’ll be the passion
    You be the play
    I’ll just almost hold you
    You just almost stay here
    I’ll just almost hold you
    You just almost stay here

I Want A New Drug - one that won't make me sick
One that won't make me crash my car
Or make me feel feet, feet, feet thick
I want a new drug - one that won't hurt my head
One that won't make my mouth too dry

One that won't make me nervous
    Wonderin' what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
    When I'm alone with you

I want a new drug, one that won't spill
One that don't cost too much
    Or come in a pill
I want a new drug, one that won't go away
One that won't keep me up all night
One that won't make me sleep all day
One that won't make me nervous
    Wonderin' what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
    I'm alone with you, baby
    I'm alone with you, baby

I want a new drug, one that does what it should
One that won't make me feel too bad
One that won't make me feel too good
I want a new drug, one with no doubt
One that won't make me talk to much

  • The "drug" that Lewis sings about is women. They don't have the side effects most drugs do - dry mouth, red eyes, make your face break out, etc.
  • Lewis sued Ray Parker Jr. for stealing the melody from this song on his hit "Ghostbusters." They settled out of court, but Parker sued Lewis in 2001 after Lewis revealed in a VH1 Behind The Music special that Parker paid him as part of the agreement.
  • This song was one of four US Top 40 hits from the album. The others were "Heart And Soul," "If This Is It," and "Walking On A Thin Line." The hits were released over the course of a year in 1983 and 1984, and led to his biggest hit, "Power Of Love," in 1985.
  • The movie Back To The Future went into production with this as a temporary track until a more suitable song was written, which turned out to be "The Power of Love."

"I Want A New Drug" did make the movie - it is in a scene where Marty McFly listens to it as his alarm clock goes off.
  • Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of this song titled "I Want A New Duck." When Al appeared in a parody of American Psycho , he is killed by Huey Lewis, who exclaims: "try parodying one of my songs now, you stupid bastard." (thanks, Matthew - Milford, MA)

    Lady Lyrics

    Lady Song Chart
Come lately, I just keep waiting
    I see nothing out there
The sun keeps throwin' out the light from the clouds
But there's no light in here
I know that things have got to change
But how to change them isn't clear
I'm tired of knockin' on doors
    When there's nobody there
You know I'm tired of knockin' on doors
    When there's nobody there

And the time keeps going on by
And I wonder what is to become of me
And I'm unsure, I can't see my way
And he says, "Lady, you don't have to see"

And the time keeps going on by
And I wonder what is to become of me
And I'm unsure, I can't see my way
And he says, "Lady, you don't need to see"

A Horse With No Name Lyrics

The moon begins to rise upon my fallen eyes
    I'm taken back to firelight
A drunken dreamer's plan to stay just as I am
    Amidst the dancing paradise
A case of beer, a smile, a motorcycle child
I feel the glow surround me
And you, and you, and you, and you, and you

    Orange funnels and snowy tunnels
Summer troubles and books in bundles
    Orange funnels and snowy tunnels
And you, and you, and you, and you, and you

A Horse With No Name Song Chart
  • America was formed in England by sons of US servicemen who were stationed there. Lead singer Dewey Bunnell wrote this when he was 19. Although the song is commonly misinterpreted about being on drugs, it is not: Bunnell based the images in the lyrics on things he saw while visiting the US.
  • This was originally titled "Desert Song," since Bunnell wrote it based on the desert scenery he encountered when his dad was stationed at an Air Force base in Santa Barbara County, California.
  • The song tells a rather abstruse tale about a trip though the desert. While the landscape is unforgiving, the singer also finds comfort in that scenario.

According to Dewey Bunnell, the "horse" represents a means of entering a place of tranquility, and this tranquil place was best represented by the desert, which sounded pretty good to him while he was stuck in rainy England.

As for why the horse had no name and why it went free after nine days, Bunnell doesn't have any answers - it seems the various listener interpretations are far more colorful than any meaning he assigned to it.
  • The group's self-titled debut album was released in the UK in late 1971, but didn't contain this song. When they were contemplating a single, they considered "I Need You," but decided to come up with a new song instead. The group went back to the studio and recorded "A Horse With No Name," which Bunnell had written.

Released as a single in the UK, it shot to #3 in January 1972, prompting the group's label, Warner Bros., to issue the single in the US and also release the album with the song included. On March 25, both the single and album hit #1 in the US; the song stayed at the top spot for three weeks, the album for five.

The album was recorded in London where the band was located. In February, when the song started climbing the charts in the US, the group embarked on a tour of the States, playing club shows before supporting the Everly Brothers as the opening act on their North American tour.

"I Need You" was released as the follow-up single, reaching #9 US. The group would become one of the most successful acts of the '70s and score another US #1 hit with "Sister Golden Hair."
  • Many people thought this was a Neil Young song when they heard it, and many rock critics pointed out the similarities. In a strange twist, "A Horse With No Name" replaced Young's "Heart of Gold" at #1 in the US.

Dewey Bunnell explained that he was well aware that he sounded like Neil Young on this song, but claimed he wasn't trying to imitate the singer. He told Rolling Stone in 1973: "I try to use a different voice so that I won't be branded as a rip-off. It's such a drag, though, to have to not sound like someone when you can't help it in the first place."
  • "Horse" is slang for heroin, leading to myriad rumors (denied by the band) that the song was about drugs.
  • Dewey Bunnell played 6-string acoustic guitar on this track; his bandmate Gerry Beckley played 12-string acoustic, and the third member of the group, Dan Peek, played bass. Session musicians rounded out the instrumentation: Kim Haworth on drums and Ray Cooper on percussion.
  • This appears on a fifth-season episode of Friends called "The One With Joey's Big Break." In it, Joey and Chandler go on a road trip to Las Vegas (hence, "through the desert").

Other TV series to use the song are:
    Parks and Recreation
    The Simpsons
    Six Feet Under

    Movies include:
    Air America (1990)
    Hideous Kinky (1998)
    The Trip (2002)
    American Hustle (2013)

    (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • A 2010 episode of the TV series Breaking Bad is titled "Caballo sin Nombre," Spanish for "Horse With No Name." At the beginning of this episode, the main character Walter White sings along to the song on his car radio, and then at the end he sings it again.
  • The San Francisco band The Loud Family named their first album Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things after a line in this song.
