Gotta Get It Right Lyrics

I remember the first time
It was one of the worst times
You lied right to my face

Oh the way that you stood there
You gave me a dead stare
The kind you cant erase

When the angels break their wings
They crash and stumble
Just like we struggle
If we could have this one night over
We Gotta Get It Right
We gotta get it right this time

Cause we were young and indestructible
(Gotta get it right this time)
With any luck we'll be unstoppable
(Gotta get it right this time)
And we could last forever

I remember the last time
More than all of the past times
And how you crawled away

You fought with a passion
Such over reaction
But you never fought to stay

When the angels break their wings
They crash and stumble
Just like we struggle

If we could have this one night over
We gotta get it right
We gotta get it right this time

Cause we were young and indestructible
(Gotta get it right this time)
With any luck we'll be unstoppable
(Gotta get it right this time)

And there's a chance for use tonight
And there's a chance to make it right

Cause we were young and indestructible
(Gotta get it right this time)
With any luck we'll be unstoppable
(Gotta get it right this time)

And we could last forever

  • This was released as the first single from Sixx: A.M.'s third album Modern Vintage. Guitarist DJ Ashba explained the record's title to Artist Direct : "Modern Vintage is very much what it is," he said. "It's all of our favorite bands that influenced us like Queen and those types of bands from the seventies. We're taking elements of the ragtime and disco stuff, sonically, and putting more of a modern production and modern twist on them."

"When we finished the album, the name came up because we were trying to describe what we had created with this album because we knew it was very special," Ashba continued. "Once the name came up, we knew there was no better name to describe this record."
  • Drummer Jeff Fabb (Black Label Society, In This Moment) joined vocalist James Michael, guitarist DJ Ashba and bassist Nikki Sixx on Modern Vintage. Ashba said the long player marked the first time Sixx: A.M. had used a live drummer on one of its discs, having previously relied solely on programmed drums while in the recording studio. "It was the first album where we actually felt it was important to capture that big album vibe we were going after," he explained. "To bring in a live drummer, it really made a huge difference, you know; it gave the whole entire album and songs a new breath of fresh air, which was really cool."

Dum, dum, dum, honey what have you done
Dum, dum, dum, it's the sound of my gun
Dum, dum, dum, honey what have you done
Dum, dum, dum, it's the sound, it's the sound...
    Nah, nah, nah...nah, nah, nah...
    Nah, nah, nah...nah, nah, nah...

    Janie's Got A Gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Her whole world's come undone
From lookin' straight at the sun

    What did her daddy do
What did he put you through
They say when Janie was arrested
They found him underneath a train
But man, he had it comin'
Now that Janie's got a gun
She ain't never gonna be the same

    Janie's got a gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run

    Tell me now it's untrue
    What did her daddy do
He jacked the little bitty baby
The man has got to be insane
They say the spell that he was under
    The lightnin' and the thunder
Knew that someone had to stop the pain

Run away, run away from the pain
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away from the pain
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away

    Janie's got a gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run

    What did her daddy do
    It's Janie's last I.O.U.
She had to take him down easy
And put a bullet in his brain
She said 'cause nobody believes me
The man was such a sleaze
He ain't never gonna be the same

Run away, run away from the pain
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away

    Janie's got a gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Everybody is on the run
    Janie's got a gun
    Her dog day's just begun

Now everybody is on the run (Honey, honey what's your problem)
'Cause Janie's got a gun (Tell me it ain't right)
Janie's got a gun (Was it daddy's cradle robbin')

Janie's Got A Gun Song Chart
  • This song is about a girl who shoots her father because he is sexually abusing her. Steven Tyler, who wrote the lyric, explained in the Walk This Way autobiography: "That song is about a girl getting raped and pillaged by her father. It's about incest, something that happens to a lot of kids who don't even find out about it until they find themselves trying to work through some major f--king neuroses.
  • Steven Tyler started writing the song in his basement, which was when he came up with the line "Janie's got a gun." He then sat on it for months, "waiting for the oracle door to open." Tyler told Rolling Stone it only became a song about child abuse after, "I looked over at a Time magazine and saw this article on 48 hours, minute by minute, of handgun deaths in the United States." He continued: "Then I got off on the child-abuse angle. I'd heard this woman speaking about how many children are attacked by their mothers and fathers. It was f---ing scary. I felt, man, I gotta sing about this. And that was it. That was my toe in the door."
  • The line, "He jacked a little, bitty baby" was written as "He raped a little, bitty baby," but Steven Tyler changed it at the request of John Kalodner, an executive at Aerosmith's record company who looked out for their commercial interests - he thought radio stations wouldn't play the song if it was too graphic. According to Tyler, Kalodner also asked him to change the line "put a bullet in his brain" to "stand out in the pouring rain," but he refused.
  • Steven Tyler admitted to Rolling Stone that he was attracted to his daughter, Liv. Said Tyler, "How can a father not be attracted to his daughter, especially when she's a cross between the girl he married and himself?" He continued: "All a man has to do is be totally honest with himself and he can see it. However, the real man knows that's just a place to never go. Instead he celebrates it by telling his daughter how beautiful she is and what a precious child of God she is. There's ways to love it without making love to it - I wrote 'Janie's Got A Gun' about fathers who don't know the difference."
  • The video depicted a girl killing her father, and the subsequent crime scene. One of the most cinematic videos ever to hit MTV, it was directed by David Fincher, who would later direct the movies Se7en, Alien III and Panic Room. Fincher's talent for building tension in a scene is evident in the clip, and many of the lighting and composition techniques would later show up in his feature films. The video starred Kristin Dattilo as Janie, and Lesley Ann Warren as her mother.
  • Steven Tyler wrote this song with Aerosmith bass player Tom Hamilton. Tyler typically writes with guitarist Joe Perry , but Hamilton has made significant songwriting contributions. Some of his other Aerosmith co-writes include "Sweet Emotion" and "Kings And Queens."
  • Aerosmith's first two decades produced millions in album sales but zero Grammy Awards. The first time they were honored was in 1991, when this song won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The voters in this category quickly acclimated to Aerosmith and gave them the award three more times in the '90s, for "Livin' On The Edge," "Crazy" and "Pink."
  • The song peaked on the US charts in February 1990, one week before the band performed it on Saturday Night Live. On the show, Aerosmith appeared in a famous Wayne's World skit where Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton engage in a scholarly debate (Tyler: "it seems that Socialism is in repose..." Hamilton: "There's never been a blueprint for the dictatorship of the Proletariats..."), and Tom Hanks plays their roadie. The band would later appear in the movie Wayne's World 2.
  • The title of this song is similar to the 1939 anti-war novel Johnny Got His Gun, which the Metallica song "One" is about. (thanks, Daniel - Køge, Denmark)

When it come to you and me
And it's never how it supposed to be
And every time you come around
It get little harder to breath
    If we only have tonight
    I wouldn't change a thing
    Well I wouldn't change a thing
    And I aint going anywhere
It's to late for me to leave
It's to late for me to leave

    Couse I'm falling slow motion
    We only have this moment
Even if God gave us forever
It still wouldn't be another pure love
So as long as youryour servant
    You know right back
A little more this Borrowed Time

Let's not waste what we have left
    Just talking about goodbye, no
    We can shit here pretanding
We have more than a life time
    Than a life time

How came a song ended so soon
    When it feels so right
    Yeah it feel so right

    I'm falling slow motion
    We only have this moment
Even if God gave us forever
It still wouldn't be another pure love
So as long as youryour servant
    You know right back

This life is us to live
This time is all we get so

  • This was one of the last songs added to the album. Clapton's record company wanted songs that were more upbeat, so this was included.
  • Songwriter Jerry Williams wrote this and two other songs on the album.
  • Clapton's marriage was in bad shape at the time. This is a positive song affirming his love, but many of the songs Clapton wrote on the album, including "Just Like A Prisoner" and "She's Waiting (For Another Lover)," express his doubts about his marriage.
  • Clapton married his wife Pattie in 1979. She was previously married to George Harrison, which didn't stop Clapton from expressing his love for her on the album Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs in 1970. Eric and Pattie divorced in 1988.
  • The album title comes from the song "Louisiana Blues" by Muddy Waters, which contains the line, "I'm going to New Orleans, baby, behind the sun."
  • Clapton had a new band for this album. It included Tim Renwick, Chris Stainton, and Donald "Duck" Dunn.

Feel the fire, he's entering the ring,
His mindset only knows how to win,

A gladiators left hand hook fight fight fight fight
    Feel the pain of tomorrow!

    Behold here comes the son,

  • This Beyond Hell/Above Heaven track is dedicated to Danish boxing champion Mikkel Kessler. He also provides vocals on the tune.

Speaking to EspyRock in a 2010 interview, vocalist Michael Poulsen explained: "Mikkel is the biggest boxer in Denmark and he was in this tournament called the 'Super Six Tournament' and he needed a song. He had been to some of the Volbeat shows and I had been to some of his fights, so we just started talking and I said, 'You know, you need a good song when you're walking to the ring,' and he said, 'Yeah, if you can come up with something good, let's work on it.'"

"I had this idea for 'A Warriors Call' and Mikkel really liked it, so we were in the studio and we had him sing on the part 'Fight Fight Fight' and now he is walking into the ring with that song," Poulson continued. "I'm really proud of that since I'm a big boxing fan and a boxing fanatic and my father was also an old fighter. Every day, the first thing I do in the morning is load up the computer and go to FightNews.com."
  • The song was released as a single in 2011 as a single to active rock stations. In February 2012, it reached #1 on the Billboard Active Rock chart, Volbeat's first ever chart-topper on the survey. Three years later it was certified gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America) for sales of 500,000 copies.

But you gotta' come home with me

I have got some good old lovin'
And I got some more in store

    Dozen
    That ain't nothin' but drugstore
    Lovin'
Pretty little thing let me light your

'Cause mama I'm so Hard To Handle now
    Yes I am

    Action speaks louder than words
And I'm a man of great experience
I know you've got another man
But I can love you better than him

Take my hand don't be afraid
I'm gonna prove every word I say
    I'm advertising love for free
So you can place your ad with me

Boys come along a dime by the dozen
That ain't nothing but ten cent

  • This song was originally recorded by Otis Redding, who wrote it with Allen Jones and Al Bell. It was the only cover song on The Black Crowes debut album, which sold over five million copies.

Running a compact 3:08, The Black Crows turned the song into a rocker, using guitars instead of horns and extending the song from Redding's 2:18 original.
  • This was The Black Crowes' third single, following "Twice As Hard" and "Jealous Again." It made #45 in the US in December, 1990, as the group was rapidly gaining momentum. After "She Talks To Angels" hit #30 in May 1991 - over a year after the album was released - "Hard To Handle" was reissued, this time going to #26 and becoming the highest-charting single for the band on the Hot 100. The group had been together for five years before signing a record deal with Def American, which prepared them well for the onslaught of success. Their live act had already been honed, and many who saw them remained lifetime fans as they became more of a jam band.

She never begs, she knows how to choose them.
She's holdin' leg wonderin' how to feel them.
Would you get behind them if you could only find them?

  • In a 1985 interview with Spin magazine, ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons explained the inspiration for this song: "I was driving in Los Angeles, and there was this unusual downpour. And there was a real pretty girl on the side of the road. I passed her, and then I thought, 'Well, I'd better pull over' or at least turn around and offer her a ride, and by the time I got back she was gone. Her legs were the first thing I noticed. Then I noticed that she had a Brooke Shields hairdo that was in danger of falling. She was not going to get wet. She had legs and she knew how to use them."
  • Feminist groups criticized this song for objectifying women, although ZZ Top had been releasing songs with playful, yet sexually-charged lyrics for years. Their first hit was "Tush" in 1975, which was probably more offensive, but the band was less popular then so it drew fewer protests.
  • The video was very popular. Just like their videos for "Gimme All Your Lovin'" and "Sharp Dressed Man," it featured Billy Gibbons' 1933 Ford Hot Rod, which he called The Eliminator. The big difference in "Legs" is that the main character is a girl.

The video also had the same director (Tim Newman) and featured the same three Playboy models: Jeana Tomasino (later Jeana Keogh), Kymberly Herrin and Daniele Arnaud, but instead of sweeping a guy off in The Eliminator, the models rescue a girl who desperately needs some confidence. They give her a makeover and teach her how to handle guys to get what she wants.

The band also appeared in the clip, but were secondary to the girls and the car. Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill had been growing their beards for four years, so they were instantly recognizable, and the shot of their fuzzy guitars rotating when they took their hands off it became a classic early-MTV image. The network was in its third year and did not have a huge amount of videos in its library, and "Legs" became a mainstay.
  • Eliminator was the first ZZ Top album to use synthesizers. The new sound, along with the exposure on MTV, helped the album sell over 10 million copies.
  • In 2002, Kid Rock recorded this for the World Wrestling Federation album WWF Forced Entry. It was a tribute to WWF diva Stacy Keibler.
  • From a songwriting perspective, this one hits the mark as one that is instantly understood on a universal level, which gave it huge hit potential. Craig Goldy, who was a guitarist in the band Dio and later became a staff songwriter at Warner Bros., told us: "'She's got legs, she knows how to use 'em.' The first two lines, the story's done. Nobody's going, 'What's this song about?'"

    Sharp Dressed Man Lyrics

    Clean shirt, new shoes
And I don't know where I am goin' to.
    Silk suit, black tie,
    I don't need a reason why.
They come runnin' just as fast as they can
Cause every girl crazy 'bout a Sharp Dressed Man.

    Gold watch, diamond ring,
    I ain't missin' not a single thing.
    Cufflinks, stick pin,
When I step out I'm gonna do you in.
They come runnin' just as fast as they can
'Cause every girl crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man.

    Top coat, top hat,
And I don't worry 'cause my wallet's fat.
    Black shades, white gloves,
    Lookin' sharp lookin' for love.
They come runnin' just as fast as they can
'Cause every girl crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man.

    Sharp Dressed Man Song Chart
  • ZZ Top were never considered sex symbols or fashion icons, but they were convincing in this song about how rich, well-dressed men are irresistible to women. This being the '80s, a silk suit was considered fashionable, although ZZ Top seemed much more comfortable in overalls.

In a 1985 interview with Spin magazine, bass player Dusty Hill explained: "Sharp-dressed depends on who you are. If you're on a motorcycle, really sharp leather is great. If you're a punk rocker, you can get sharp that way. You can be sharp or not sharp in any mode. It's all in your head. If you feel sharp, you be sharp."
  • According to Billy Gibbons, he got the idea for this song when he saw a movie and a character was listed in the credits as "Sharp-Eyed Man" (possibly the 1981 film The Amateur).
  • The music video was the first that was a sequel. It picked up the story from the "Gimme All Your Lovin'" video of the down-on-his-luck gas station worker who is swept away by three beautiful women. In "Sharp Dressed Man," he's a valet, and he encounters the same three girls and is once again given the keys to The Eliminator, which is Billy Gibbons' 1933 Ford Hot Rod.
  • This was one of the first ZZ Top songs to use synthesizers. Mixed with Billy Gibbons' distinctive guitar sound, it gave them a new sound without alienating their old fans. It also helped that ZZ Top used their synths for bass, keeping the sound more heavy and less Human League.
  • Eliminator was one of very few albums that have sold over 10 million copies, earning Diamond certification.
  • This song attracted a slew of new fans to ZZ Top when the video ran constantly on MTV. Their long beards made them instantly recognizable. The fancy car and use of babes in the video also helped.

The women in the video were Playboy models - beautiful women were a fixture of ZZ Top's videos and stage shows. The video vixens were Jeana Tomasino, Kymberly Herrin and Daniele Arnaud. Tomasina would later become Jeana Keogh and star in The Real Housewives of Orange County.
  • ZZ Top performed this at the 1997 VH1 Fashion Awards while male models walked the runway. In order to keep up their strictly heterosexual image, a bunch of beautiful women danced around the band during the performance.

  • This song is all about a man who is super vain. Henderson told HMV.com the tracks on Chapter One are snapshots of how she felt at the time. On this song, for instance she said, "I was so angry at the person in that track and out came this track that's really full of attitude."
  • Henderson told MTV UK the song shows a much more edgy side to her. "I think a lot of the time, people imagine me as a very soft spoken artist… this does showcase another side of me," she explained. "Not that I'm trying to shock or anything like that, it's just you know (there) are different sides to everybody's character and different things that people can relate to."
  • Ella Henderson wrote the song with Al Shux, whose other songwriting credits include Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" and Lana Del Rey's "Young And Beautiful."
  • Henderson explained the background to the song: "It's about the most self-centered person I've ever met," she said. "Everyone has experienced that type of person. They love themselves before they can love anyone else. 'Mirror Man' is probably my favorite song to sing live. I'm not about attitude at all, but the song is so honest and rude that everyone loves it, and they're desperate to discover who Mirror Man is."
  • Asked by OfficialCharts.com if the subject of the song is aware it's about them, Henderson replied: "Probably not because they love themselves that much! I think everyone in life has experienced a mirror man or mirror girl. If you haven't you will at some point."

    Revenge Lyrics

    Remember the girl
Abused with forks ,knives and razorblades
    Remember the girl
Abused with forks, knives and razorblades
She finally left him, she had enough of her man's rage
Band-aids cover her scars, she left him bloodied
Beat his ass with a bat, face sunk like Silly Putty
Y'all can sit back so I can study
    Destruction of the family design
And how the morals of society decline
Essentially it's beats to rhymes like grapes to wine

    It's alright we're in love
    Can't live with or without

See, see she can't live with him and can't live without him
Stress got her down, she needs to deal with her problems
While the drama gets deeper, I put on the reefer
She took the last step and sent his ass to the reaper
Chaos is what she saw in the mirror
Scared of herself and the power that was in her
It took over and weighed heavily on her shoulders
Militant insanity is now what controlled her

    It's alright we're in love
    Can't live with or without
    We're in love
    We're in love

Kill it, before it reaches you
Missiles won't work, it's approaching the mainland
What if it reaches the metropolitan areas, Cosmopolitan areas
Secure the lines, prepare for departure,
    Calm, calm, calm
It is a big business and seems to be advancing underground
    Because my style is underground
I'm green with my red eyes mad tint
    Flee, fly, flow, rapido rapido
She feeds plentiful, electrifying the nation
    Electrifying the nation

Don't you see that we are in danger
    How will we stop it
    She is attacking

    Come on, we're runnin out
    Runnin out of time
    Runnin out of time
    Runnin out of time

    It's alright we're in love
    Can't live with or without

  • This stripped-down track was just something Ella Henderson was playing around with until her A&R guy heard it and told her to record the tune. That demo of Henderson and her piano is the one we hear on Chapter One.
