Driven To Tears Lyrics

How can you say that you're not responsible?
What does it have to do with me?
What is my reaction, what should it be?
Confronted by this latest atrocity

Driven To Tears
Driven to tears
Driven to tears

Hide my face in my hands, shame wells in my throat
My comfortable existence is reduced to a shallow meaningless party

Seems that when some innocent die
All we can offer them is a page in a some magazine
Too many cameras and not enough food
'Cause this is what we've seen

Driven to tears
Driven to tears
Driven to tears

Protest is futile, nothing seems to get through
What's to become of our world, who knows what to do

Driven to tears
Driven to tears
Driven to tears

Driven to tears
Driven to tears
Driven to tears, driven to tears

  • The Police played this when they toured Australia in 1980, a few months before they recorded it.

    Who!

Pretty woman, walking down the street!
Pretty woman, the kind I'd like to meet!

No one can look as good as youuu

    Mercy!!

Pretty woman, won't you pardon me??
Pretty woman, I couldn't help but see
Pretty woman. Oh you look lovely as you can be
Are you lonely just like me!!???

    Ahhrrrr!

    Pretty woman, stop awhile
    Pretty woman, talk awhile
Pretty woman, give your smile to me

    Pretty woman, yeah yeah yeah!!
    Pretty woman, look my way!!
Pretty woman, say you'll stay with me!

    Cause I need you,
    I'll treat you right!
    Come with me baby
    Be mine tonight!

Pretty woman, don't walk on by!!
Pretty woman, don't make me cry!!
Pretty woman. Don't walk away-yay. Okay.

If that's the way it must be, okay
I guess I'll go on home, it's late
There'll be tomorrow night, but wait, what do I see?
Is she walking back to me?
Yeah she is walking back to me

  • Roy Orbison first recorded this in 1964. Along with "Where Have All The Good Times Gone," "Dancing in the Street," "Big Bad Bill," and "Happy Trails," this was one of 5 covers on the album. Van Halen made an album a year from 1978-1983, and their constant touring made it difficult to write new songs.
  • The promo clip from this song was the first concept video Van Halen made. With MTV launching on August 1, 1981 and desperate for new rock videos, the network convinced the band's label to make a clip for "Unchained." The band had no interest in videos, but when the producer Robert Lombard put together concert footage to make the "Unchained" clip, the band loved the results and had Lombard to the video for "(Oh) Pretty Woman," which was a tawdry affair. It was very costume intensive, with David Lee Roth dressed as Napoleon, Eddie Van Halen as a cowboy, Alex Van Halen as Tarzan, and Michael Anthony a Samurai Warrior. The band wanted to be as outrageous as possible, and Lombard obliged, enlisting two midgets and a drag queen to appear in the video, and making sure the band had access to their drugs and alcohol of choice. At the end of the video, the midgets are seen fondling the "woman," who flips her wig to reveal that she is a he. MTV aired the video sparingly, as they didn't want to scare cable companies away with anything too lascivious.
  • Van Halen recorded this after completing their 1981 "Invasion" tour. They put it out as a single a few months before the album was released.
  • This was released at a time when the band was not touring or recording. It was the first break they took since hitting the road in 1978 to support their first album, and they put this out so people wouldn't forget them.
  • After this came out, Sasson jeans (it was the '80s, designer jeans were cool) used the original Roy Orbison version in a TV commercial.
  • An a cappella version of the Dale Evans classic "Happy Trails" was released as the B-side. Van Halen wanted something easy to record so they could start their vacations.

And The Cradle Will Rock Lyrics

    Ow
    Oh yeah, get up
    Ow! (Yeah)
    Ow! Ow!
Well, they say it's kinda frightnin'
    How this younger generation swings
You know it's more than just some new sensation
Well, the kid is into losin' sleep
And he don't come home for half the week
You know it's more than just an aggravation

    And The Cradle Will Rock
Yes the cradle, cradle will rock
And I say rock on. Uh! Rock on

And when some local kid gets down
They try an' drum him outta town
They say, "Ya coulda least faked it, boy"
Fake it, boy (Ooh, stranger, boy)
At an early age he hits the street
Winds up tired with who he meets
    An' he's unemployed (Unemployed?) Ow!

And the cradle will rock. Ow!
And the cradle, the cradle will rock
An' I say rock on. Oh, say, rock on

    Have you seen Junior's grades?
    Ooh

    Ow!
And when some local kid gets down
They try an' drum him outta town
They say, "Ya could've least faked it, boy. Faked it, boy"
And so an early age he hits the street
'N winds up tired with who he meets
An' he's unemployed. His folks are overjoyed

    And the cradle will rock
Yes the cradle, cradle will rock
I say rock on. Hey! Rock on

Rock on. Rock on. Rock on
This ain't never been new, babe, child. Ow!
    Rock on, wow! I said...
Rock on. Rock on. Oh, oh, oh
Rock on. Oh, ow, ah, ah, ah

    Beautiful Girls Lyrics

She was seaside sittin', just a smokin' and a drinkin' on ringside,
On top of the world, oh, yeah.
She had her drink in her hand; she had her toes in the sand and whoa,
What a beautiful girl, ah, yeah.
What a sweet talkin' honey with a little bit of money can
    Turn your head around.
Creatures from the sea with the look to me like she'd like to fool around.
What a snappy little mammy. Gonna keep her pappy happy
And accompany me to the ends of the earth, ah, yeah.
Here I am, ain't no man of the world, no.
All I need is a beautiful girl.
    Ah, yeah! Beautiful Girls.
Well, I'm a bum in the sun and I'm having fun.
And I know you know I got no special plans.
All the bills are paid. I got it made in the shade,
And all I nee, nee, need is the woman.
What a sweet talkin' honey with a little bit of money can
    Turn your head around.
Creatures from the sea with the looks to me like she'd like to fool around.
Here I am, ain't no man of the world, no.

  • This was the second single from the album, after "Dance The Night Away." Their singles did not sell well, but their albums did. Many people bought the first Van Halen album after hearing this one.
  • The group wrote this in David Lee Roth's basement. They had just finished a tour and were under tight deadline pressure to record their second album. They released an album every year until 1984.
  • Roth fractured his foot doing a jump for the album's photo shoot. Since there was no way Roth could stay still on stage, they postponed their tour so he could heal.
  • The album took 6 days to record. Van Halen was quick in the studio because they laid down most of the tracks live, with very little overdubbing.

It's flooding over you now, keep your chin up
    I'm a hurricane
Came through the thunder, to drag you under
    Make you take the blame
Remember me forever, I'm the weather
    My tears are the rain
    You're drowning together, I hope you're happy
    Remember my name

Who knows where your limit, where your limit lies
You're given, what you're given and now the giver must die

I'm running, catching up girl, keep your feet up, I'm straight to the vein
You fall through the floors, and you take it all, and now you feel the rain
Rolling down your cheeks, bleeding, dripping to your feet, keep breathing, stay with me

Who knows where your limit, where your limit lies,
you're given, what you're given and now the giver must die
And the women, you've forgiven, who left you behind
Know your limit, where your limit, where your limit lies

Lump in a throat, too hard to swallow
I go, down cold for coming up tomorrow
I will, leave tracks, the footsteps back
From the attack where I trapped the love that I had

Said, lump in a throat, too hard to swallow
I go, down cold for coming up tomorrow
I will, leave tracks, the footsteps back

  • Jamie T told NME that this breakup song was written after listening to "a lot of the Rolling Stones and a bit of Bob Dylan and some Blur."

"I was listening to things that were quite misogynistic, in a weird way," he added. "Because these are beautiful love songs, but underneath it they're f---ing scathing like 'Under My Thumb' and 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right,' where he's like, 'You just kinda wasted my precious time.' It's so flippant, it's f---ing rude."

There's some great lines in 'No Distance Left To Run,'" Jamie T continued. "'I hope you're with someone who makes you feel safe in your sleeping tonight... but when your coming down, think of me here.' It's a horrible thing to say – 'at your most vulnerable moment. think of me.' The beauty of saying goodbye to someone, but also being like 'f--k you' really hit me. So I was trying to write a song with that kind of temperament to it."

    You're No Good Song Chart
  • One of the most blatant and memorable songs in the "no-good man" milieu, this one was written by a guy: Clint Ballard, Jr., who also wrote songs for Connie Francis and The Hollies. The song is about a woman who comes to the conclusion that the guy she split from was trouble from the start.
  • This song had been around for a while before Linda Ronstadt took it to the top of the chart. It was originally recorded by Dee Dee Warwick in 1963. Her version was produced by the famous team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, but it stalled at #117. Betty Everett had more success with her version, which went to #51 in 1964. First released on her 1963 album of the same name, Everett recorded the song at Chess Records in Chicago, with Maurice White on drums (White, who later formed Earth, Wind & Fire, was a staff drummer at Chess early in his career). Everett was a former Gospel singer who, like Ronstadt, had a very powerful voice. Her next single, "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)," became her biggest hit.

The song made one more chart appearance in 1964 when the British male band Swinging Blue Jeans switched the gender and took the song to #97 in the US and #3 in the UK, where it became the best-known rendition of the song.

A decade later, Ronstadt started performing the song and recorded it with her producer Peter Asher. Released as a single from her fifth album, the song was a huge breakthrough for Ronstadt, whose chart success to this point was sporadic (her biggest hit to then: "Long, Long Time" at #25). She became one of the biggest stars of the '70s, known for her musical versatility and impressive vocal range. Most of her hits were cover songs, including the follow-up, "When Will I Be Loved," originally recorded by the Everly Brothers.
  • Van Halen recorded this for their second album. It was one of many successful cover songs by the group; Others include Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman," The Kinks' "You Really Got Me," and Martha & the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street." This is the only cover on the album. Between 1978-1983, Van Halen released an album a year. Since they toured constantly, including cover songs on the albums helped ease the songwriting burden.

    Yellow Flicker Beat Lyrics

I’m a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm
And the scars that mark my body, they’re silver and gold
My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones
It keeps my veins hot, the fires find a home in me
I move through town, I’m quiet like a fire
And my necklace is of rope, I tie it and untie it

And our people talk to me, but nothing ever hits
So people talk to me, and all the voices just burn holes
    I’m going in (ooh)

This is the start of how it all ever ends
They used to shout my name, now they whisper it
I’m speeding up and this is the
Red, orange, Yellow Flicker Beat sparking up my heart
We rip the start, the colors disappear
I never watch the stars there’s so much down here
So I just try to keep up with them
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart

I dream all year, but they’re not the same kinds
And the shivers move down my shoulder blades in double time

And now people talk to me I’m slipping out of reach now
People talk to me, and all their faces blur
But I got my fingers laced together and I made a little prison
And I’m locking up everyone that ever laid a finger on me
    I’m going in (ooh)

This is the start of how it all ever ends
They used to shout my name, now they whisper it
I’m speeding up and this is the
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart
We rip the start, the colors disappear
I never watch the stars there’s so much down here
So I just try to keep up with them
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart

  • This is the first song to be released from the Lorde-curated soundtrack for Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. The New Zealand teenage songstress penned the tune with her Pure Heroine collaborator Joel Little. It was produced by Paul Epworth (co-creator of Adele's "Rolling In The Deep and "Skyfall" songs). According to Lorde, it was her "attempt at getting inside" the head of the movie series' heroine Katniss Everdeen.
  • Lorde told KROQ's Kevin and Bean the story of the menacing track. "Basically I wrote the song specifically for the movie, it wasn't something that I had to draft up previously," she said. "I reread the books, and I just wanted to tap into everything that Katniss is feeling in that film and what's the crazy stuff that goes on."

"One of the things that happened in the book which to me felt like this crazy turning point was her best friend Peter tries to kill her, he's been brainwashed and tries to strangle her," Lorde continued. "It just felt like something so irreparable and something that the characters couldn't turn back from. I felt like Katniss was like 'okay, I'm taking names. I'm coming for blood. You don't do these types of things to my friends and family and get away with it.' I just wanted to make something kind of dark and haunting."
  • The song was recorded at New Jersey's Lakehouse Recording Studios after they were recommended to Lorde by Bruce Springsteen.
  • This isn't the first time Lorde has written a song for the Hunger Games movie series. In 2013 she supplied a cover of Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" for the Catching Fire soundtrack.
  • Kanye West remixed the song for the Hunger Games compilation. Lorde had to cold-call the rapper-producer and ask him to do it, which she admitted to Billboard magazine was no simple thing for her. "I'm the worst person ever at talking to people I don't know on the phone - I can't even order pizza," she said. "I would put off calling him. I'd say, it's 12:57, I'll do it at 1."
  • The song's music video was directed by Emily Kai Bock, who also filmed Grimes' "Oblivion" and Arcade Fire's "Afterlife" clips. It was shot partly in New Jersey, and partly at the Park Avenue Armory during New York Fashion Week. "When I was dreaming it up," said Lorde, "I wasn't thinking too hard about story or a specific narrative, more a mood; a harsh, crackling heat."

"Yellow Flicker Beat is about Katniss realizing that things have crossed a line, about being pushed to the edge and right over it," she continued. "My character in this video, whether she's weaving her way through a decadent ballroom, hiding out in a grimy, neon-lit motel room (her hair ever-so-slightly dishevelled), or waiting in the night for her bus to come dressed in her whitest clothes, is a shapeshifter, full of intensity and impulse, kind of like Katniss. whether she's in a small space or a cavernous one, she's fiery."

I don't really know what I'm trying to explain to you here," Lorde concluded, "but don't read the video like a story, just let it take you somewhere."
  • Asked by Fader how she got West to remix the song, Lorde replied, "We had wanted to do something separate of any project. We just wanted to sit in the studio and try something out. I didn't know it was going to be the 'Yellow Flicker Beat' rework."

"It was cool that he was into the song, and he re-imagined it in this different way as it was produced," she continued. "He sang it to me - I guess he made the sounds with his mouth - and I was like, 'This is not going to work. This doesn't sound like something that's going to be cool.' But of course it was cool, and it worked as the other side of the coin as my version."

I Will Always Love You Song Chart
  • Dolly Parton wrote this and did the original version in 1974, which went to #1 on the Country chart that year. She recorded another version for the 1982 movie The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas, which also hit #1 on the Country chart. She wrote the song after the breakup of the musical partnership she had with Country singer Porter Wagoner. They were never romantically involved. (thanks - Katie, Nashville, TN)
  • The lyrics are sad in the sense that the singer will always love the person she is singing to, yet she knows they are not right for each other and must let him go. It is often misinterpreted as a song about people who will be together forever, and even gets played at some weddings.
  • This was featured in the movie The Bodyguard, which Houston starred in with Kevin Costner. Houston played a famous singer and Costner her bodyguard. Of course, they fall in love. Costner picked it for the movie.

Whitney originally intended to cover Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" as the lead single from The Bodyguard. However, after she found out the song had been used just one year earlier in the 1991 film Fried Green Tomatoes, Costner suggested she record Dolly Parton's country hit instead. Houston loved the choice but Clive Davis, the Arista Records boss who acted as mentor for the singer throughout her career, was puzzled by the selection. Costner, who also produced the film, knew it would be perfect for the picture and stuck to his guns. "I said, 'This is a very important song in this movie,'" he recalled to CMT. "I didn't care if it was ever on the radio. I didn't care. I said, 'We're also going to do this a cappella at the beginning. I need it to be a cappella because it shows a measure of how much she digs this guy - that she sings without music.'"
  • Parton's original version was a country ballad. Houston's recording had more lavish production and became a pop, soul, and adult contemporary hit. The tremendous crossover appeal meant that radio stations of many different formats played the song, giving it a huge audience. It ended up being a groundbreaker, but it was a big risk, as there wasn't much crossover between the country and R&B audiences. "Truth be told, the musical side of her camp was very unsure about this little country song," recalled Kevin Costner.

While she was crushing the convention that a soul singer shouldn't do country, Houston also proved that her fans would accept her in an on-screen interracial romance, which she had with Costner in the movie. In the film, the race issue wasn't mentioned.
  • This stayed at #1 US for 14 weeks, a record at the time. In 1995, this record was broken by "One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, which held the top spot for 16 weeks.
  • For a time, this was second only to "We Are The World" as the biggest-selling single ever. It was bumped to #3 n 1997, when Elton John's new version of "Candle In The Wind" became the biggest.
  • Houston performed this at the Grammys in 1993. It won for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The song also won the 1992 Soul Train Music Award for R&B Song of the Year.

It did not, however, win an Oscar, since it was not eligible for the Best Original Song award. That award can only go to songs that are written specifically for a film.
  • According to Kevin Costner, he really wanted Whitney Houston to star in The Bodyguard with him, so much so that he postponed shooting for a year until she was available. Costner was one of the few people in Hollywood who could convince a movie studio to do this; he had lots of sway after his movie Dances with Wolves won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1991.
  • The Bodyguard is the best-selling soundtrack of all time.
  • In 2002, while the US was preparing to go to war with Iraq, Saddam Hussein ran TV and radio ads using this song as he prepared to be re-elected. Houston's record label filed a complaint with the Iraqi mission to the United Nations.
  • Elvis Presley wanted to record this song but demanded half the publishing rights. Dolly Parton refused and was vindicated when years later Whitney Houston's version earned her $6 million. Parton commented to Observer Music Monthly April 2008: "'I think stories like that are the reason why younger female artists say I've influenced them."
  • In an interview with UK music magazine Q, Dolly Parton said she "was blown away" by Whitney's version. She said: "The way she took that simple song of mine and made it such a mighty thing, it almost became her song. Some writers say, 'Ooh, I hate the way they've done that to my song or that version wasn't what I had in mind.' I just think it's wonderful that people can take a song and do it so many different ways."
  • David Foster produced this song. When the decision was made to record it for the movie, Foster went to a record store and bought the Linda Ronstadt version so Whitney could learn the song. When he called Dolly Parton to let her know they were using her song, Dolly told him something very important: the Ronstadt version leaves out the last verse ("I wish you joy and happiness..."), which changes the tone of the song. Parton gave him the lyrics and Whitney recorded the full version. Foster had to tell the film's director, Mick Jackson, that he needed an extra 40 seconds of screen time, as it had been placed in the film minus the last verse.

Foster, who has produced Michael Jackson, Celine Dion and Michael Bublé, called it "The love song of the century."
  • The song returned to the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart following Houston's death. Its comeback was fueled by an enormous resurgence in digital sales in the week after her passing of 195,000, an increase of 6723%, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
  • The song was performed by Amber Riley on the 'Heart' episode of Glee. The tape of the show was delivered to the Fox network the day before the untimely death of Whitney and broadcast four days after her passing. Riley's character Mercedes sings the ballad as part of a plot line revolving around her indecision over two romantic interests.
  • When this reached #3 in the Hot 100 in 2011, it became the fifth song to become a top 10 hit in two different chart runs. So, what were the other four? They were:

"The Twist" by Chubby Checker - #1 in 1960 and #1 in 1962.

"Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett and The Cryptkickers - #1 in 1962 and #10 in 1973.

"Stand By Me" by Ben E. King - #4 in 1961 and #9 in 1986.

    "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen - #9 in 1976 #2 in 1992.
  • After Houston died on February 11, 2012, "I Will Always Love You" was used in many tributes to the singer, as it was her best-known song. The night after Houston's death, Jennifer Hudson sang a moving rendition in honor of Houston at the Grammy Awards ceremony.

    Crime Lyrics

    Waterfront
    Sunshine
    A little weed
    A little red wine
    Then come
    The 5-0
    Citation
    It's illegal

    We just wanna party
    We don't mean no harm
    Don't wanna hurt nobody
But they make it so hard
    We just wanna party
    Just wanna rock all night
    Don't wanna hurt nobody
    No need to be uptight

    It's a Crime

    Backyard
    Tunes right
    Girls dancin’
    In the moonlight
    Then come
    The one time
    Regulation
    Gotta pay the fine

    We just wanna party
    We don't mean no harm
    Don't wanna hurt nobody
But they make it so hard
    We just wanna party
    Just wanna rock all night
    Don't wanna hurt nobody
    No need to be uptight

    It's a crime

Pour up another shot of Hennessy my tendency to start the party with
Probably hit that Bob Marley I ain't with that Molly shit
Represent my nigga bang your hood
Bloods and Crips in the same building it’s all good
I’m looking at this pretty fine thing rolling with her friend
Hoping I can make her mind change jump inside my Benz
    Let me get it crackin’
Conversation turn to plenty sexual frustration
Fuck-faces lookin’ at her hard to not to be impatient
    O really though
    You Drink?
    You Smoke?
    Get a case
    Get a 1/8
    Fly high not coach
    G5 sit back
    I’ll drive let me know
    On the couch
    On the bed
    On the floor
    Say go
    Say when
    In the wind we go
    We toast to the game
    No games
    We both really grown
    I’m sayin’ you playin’
    I mean I dance
To my own beat to the beat now flip your hands and
    Let the smoke burn
Lets the smoke burn in your vein
When it’s your turn hit it twice then say my name
Say my name say my name
    Mind game like Candyman
    Dark chocolate vanilla
I tell you this is Candy Land
This is candid camera there’s no pauses allowed
They don’t understand us because we wont turn it down
    Middle fingers in the air
This is truth and double dare
300 drunk muthafuckas in the holding cell

    Whoa

    We just wanna party
    We don't mean no harm
    Don't wanna hurt nobody
But they make it so hard
    We just wanna party
    Just wanna rock all night
    Don't wanna hurt nobody
    No need to be uptight

    We just wanna party
    We don't mean no harm
    Don't wanna hurt nobody
But they make it so hard
    We just wanna party
    Just wanna rock all night
    Don't wanna hurt nobody
    No need to be uptight

    Crime Song Chart
  • This is a track from Where Does This Door Go, an album where every track features a seventh chord. Hawthorne explained why during an album playback session. "One of the very first producer meetings that I had was with...Rodney Jerkins," he related. "I played him a few demos I had done and I explained to him my vision for the record, and he basically told me I would have to scrap everything and start over again because I couldn't have any seventh chords in any of the songs 'cause it was too jazzy -- 'too soulful' were his words, I believe. So after that I decided that every single song on this new record would have to have a seventh chord in it."
  • The song finds Hawthorne questioning why indulging in "a little weed" at a party is a crime. He is joined by Kendrick Lamar who spits a verse about his love of partying.
  • The song's music video was directed by Parks and Recreation and The Social Network actress Rashida Jones. It shows Hawthorne encountering various obstacles on his way to a white-dress-only party. Jones said: "The video is a parody of ridiculously exclusive parties which are made nearly impossible to get to but tout themselves as 'the party of the year.'"

"I liked the idea of the video starting as a sexy getting-ready video and devolving into a messy, very unsexy, unexpected trek. And the final realization is that YOU are the real party! I'm just starting to realize that about myself (which is why I stay home most nights)."
