Guitarist Herman Li explained the song's meaning to AMH Network : "The lyrics are not about a sad relationship breakup," he said. "It's more like a 'I don't really care about it, why did I care in the first place' kind of song."

This features guest vocals by Matt Heafy of Trivium. It was one of three Maximum Overload tracks that he contributed towards. Guitarist Herman Li explained to MetalInsider : "The way we were recording the new album, we got to the point where we needed different kind of backing vocalists in certain songs, like 'The Game,' 'Defenders,' and also 'No More.' Somehow, we just thought of Matt's name all of a sudden, and we just asked him basically."

"He was really cool, he recorded so much stuff, so many different vocals and rough, and harmonized his own voice, and black metal, thrash metal versions, it was really awesome that he was able to take the time while he was off tour to do the backing vocals spots for our songs."

Sussudio Song Chart

On a 1997 episode of VH1 Storytellers, Collins said: "This is one of those examples of improvising lyrics. You know, sometimes you can use the lyric, other times you're in big trouble, because what you write doesn't mean anything. So I set up this drum-machine pad, and I got some chords, and I started to sing into the microphone, and this word came out, which was "sus-sussudio." It just literally came out, at the time... that was back when I could dance, so I kind of knew I had to find something else for that word, then I went back and tried to find another word that scanned as well as "sussudio," and I couldn't find one, so I went back to "sussudio."

Then I thought OK, let's give it a meaning, what is it? The lyrics are based on this schoolboy crush on this girl at school. It's happening with my daughter now, she's eight years old and she loves this boy, but she won't tell him, like in the lyrics this boy loves her but they don't talk about it... how do they know? 'I know she likes me, I know she likes me, doesn't know my name, doesn't know I exist, but I know she likes me'... So that's what the song is about, so "sussudio" became a name for this person, and since it's become a name for a horse. My older daughter's got a horse called Sussudio, and I'm sure there are children all over the world with the name Sussudio, so I apologize for that."

As was the rest of the album, this was recorded in Collins' living room shortly after he married his second wife.

When this was released in 1985, critics assailed Collins for its similarity with Prince's hit "1999." Collins responded by saying that he was a "big Prince fan" and that his original version of "Sussudio" sounded even more like Prince.

"Sussudio" is a girl's name in the lyrics, but it is also the name Collins gave to the song's drum track.

This was the second US #1 hit from the No Jacket Required album. The first was "One More Night."

Collins recalled to The Mail on Sunday: "This is me trying to write a dance tune! It always fascinated me that the horn players would come in and play a song of mine and suddenly make it R&B. It was influenced by Prince, of course, and was the first time I worked with dance synth programmers."

Collins used The Phenix Horns on this track, who were famous for their work with Earth, Wind & Fire. Collins started working with them in 1981 when he put them on his solo track "I Missed Again" and also on the Genesis song "No Reply At All."

John Potoker, who was Collins' go-to guy for remixes, created the extended remix of this song that was released as a 12" single. Potoker says his work on "Sussudio" is some of his best, and that he was thrilled to learn that Collins was using this arrangement on his tour.

Like the clip for "One More Night," the music video was filmed at The Princess Victoria, a London pub owned by Virgin Records' founder Richard Branson. Collins and his band (guitarist Daryl Stuermer, drummer Chester Thompson, and bass player Lee Sklar) woo a bored crowd with a performance of the song.

In the video for Collins' ...But Seriously track "Hang In Long Enough," he and the band perform aboard a Titanic-like ship called the "S.S. Udio," a reference to this song.

This features in the movie American Psycho in a scene where Christian Bale's serial killer Patrick Bateman puts it on after doing a monologue about the brilliance of Phil Collins and Genesis. He says, "This is 'Sussudio.' Great, great song. Personal favorite."

The Genesis song "In Too Deep" is also used in and discussed in the film.

Defenders Song Chart

This rapid-fire rocker features guest backing vocals by Matt Heafy of Trivium, who also contributed to "The Game" and "No More" on Maximum Overload. In our interview with DragonForce guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman , Li explained: "Matt had been a friend of ours for quite a few years now, and he's got a great voice and so many diverse tones. It just came about that we decided, 'Hey, why don't we just ask Matt if he'll do it?' And he did an amazing job. He did so many different voices, like death metal, black metal, pop, and thrashy metal - different backing vocals for these songs."

This was one of the first tracks DragonForce finished recording for Maximum Overload. Herman Li told Loudwire the story of the song: "The idea for this song was to create a contrast, by fusing some thrash metal style riffs with DragonForce's big epic choruses and high speed twin guitars solos," he said. "Our friend Matt Heafy from Trivium helped us out with some aggressive backing vocals in the pre choruses."

"In terms of lyrics, here we went for our classic fantasy approach similar to our first album," Li added.

I Wanna Sex You Up Song Chart

This song's bass line is sampled from Betty Wright's "Tonight is the Night," which chronicles a young woman's very first "intimate encounter" with a man. In that song, which was recorded during a live performance, Ms. Wright is heard telling her audience the story of how she came to write the song, and how her mother did not exactly approve of her performing it in public. According to Ms. Wright, her mother, properly mortified by the song's subject matter, righteously exclaimed, "I KNOW you're not gonna sing THAT song!" That line ("I KNOW you're not gonna sing THAT song.") can be heard throughout "I Wanna Sex You Up." (thanks, Robin - Birmingham, AL)

This was the debut single for both the group and the record label, Giant Records. It was a huge hit, but it did offend the sensibilities of some listeners. At a few radio stations, they referred to the song as "I Wanna Love You Up."

This was written for the 1991 movie New Jack City starring Wesley Snipes and Ice-T. When they were looking for songs for the film, the producers wanted the modern R&B sound - "New Jack Swing" - that artists like Bobby Brown and Jodi Watley were using. To get it, they contacted the producer/songwriter Elliott Straite, who had written the Bell Biv Devoe hit "Poison."

They showed him the film and let him pick a scene to soundtrack; he chose one where the character Uniqua (Tracy Camilla Johns) does a striptease for Nino, the kingpin played by Snipes. He wrote this sexy song specifically for the scene.

Bryan Abrams, Kevin Thornton, Mark Calderon, and Sam Watters formed the group (originally called Take One) at Northwestern High School in Oklahoma City. They made their debut at a high school talent show singing a jingle from a jeans commercial. When they were starting out, the group was known for its impromptu auditions, having sung without notice to Ronnie Milsap, Huey Lewis, Sheila E, The O'Jays, Jon Bon Jovi, Kool & the Gang, and Tony! Toni! Tone!

Color Me Badd's next two singles went to #1 in the US - "I Adore Mi Amor" and "All 4 Love."

This was used on Color Me Badd's first album, and also on the New Jack City soundtrack. The version on the soundtrack is rougher and a little more raunchy, with a spoken interlude where one of the guys tells a girl to "just lay back and enjoy the ride."

This was written by Berry Gordy and Tyran Carlo (Roquel "Billy" Davis). The royalties from this song (and two hits by Marv Johnson) enabled Gordy to borrow the money needed to start up Motown Records.

This was the first chart single for Wilson, a native of Detroit. He had been in the group The Dominoes, but this was his first release as a solo artist.

The title comes from a Louis Jordan movie with an all-black cast called Reet, Petite, and Gone.

In 1986, this was re-released in the UK and rocketed to #1 after millions of Britons saw a Miller beer commercial featuring a plasticine-animated Jackie Wilson singing this song.

Van Morrison wrote and recorded a song called "Jackie Wilson Said," which was covered by Dexys Midnight Runners . The first line in that song is: "Well, Jackie Wilson said, it was Reet Petite..."

In British slang, "Reet" means "Righteous."

Early Morning Rain Song Chart

The first Gordon Lightfoot composition to become well known, this song was composed by the Canadian singer-songwriter in 1964. The tune describes a down-on-luck man far from home, observing the takeoff of a Boeing 707 plane. According to some sources, it was inspired by Lightfoot seeing off a friend at the Los Angeles airport.

One of Gordon Lightfoot's most covered songs, this was first featured on Judy Collins' Fifth Album, before its release by the Canadian singer-songwriter. Not much later it was recorded both by Ian & Sylvia as the title track of their 1965 album and by Peter, Paul & Mary for their See What Tomorrow Brings set. Other notable covers include ones by Bob Dylan on his 1970 Self Portrait LP, Elvis Presley, whose version can be heard on his 1972 Elvis Now disc and Paul Weller, whose interpretation reached #40 in the UK in 2005.

Peter, Paul & Mary's version reached #91 on the US pop charts, the only time the song has reached the Hot 100.

Elvis Presley also performed the song during the USA airing of his 1973 Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite TV show. Lightfoot recalled during a 2014 Reddit AMA that it was the favorite cover of any of tunes. "I got a lot of attention on that song," he recalled. "I tried to meet him once, but Elvis had left the building. I never got to meet him, I never did, I almost got to meet him but I never got to meet the guy."

Gordon Lightfoot told Mojo magazine regarding Bob Dylan's cover: "I was totally blown away that he would record one of my songs in the first place. It helped my career - I'd not had a hit single myself at that point. His cover was a linchpin in that whole process because it made people in the industry aware that I was producing good songs."

In Norse mythology Valhalla is a giant hall, where the souls of warriors slain in battle are taken by the Valkyries. A form of heaven where they are ruled over by the god Odin, the fallen combatants spend their days fighting safe in the knowledge of never being permanently harmed.

Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford told the story of this song to Classic Rock Revisited : "I've written about a lot of things in my life as a lyricist and I'm always trying to go one step further and into different places.," he said. "There is a series on American TV called The Vikings. I love that. I loved going to Scandinavia and I love to check out the culture and the history of that place and the other places I visit. The Norse mythology of Scandinavia and Denmark and Sweden and some of England...I think about these things and then about four o'clock in the morning I wake up wondering what I can write about to go with this great music."

"Out of the blue came this word, 'Valhalla,'" Halford continued. "I categorized that as a bullet word, and I realized that was my focus. I write and I write and I write. I always overwrite my lyrics. Who knew that the Metal God would be singing about being on the North Sea and heading to Denmark or Sweden searching for Valhalla? That's the great adventure that we have in Priest."

This song is about being in love with an alcoholic. Concrete Blonde lead singer Johnette Napolitano wrote it about Marc Moreland of the band Wall Of Voodoo - the bands played many of the same Los Angeles venues in the '80s. Moreland died of liver failure in 2002; Napolitano discussed Moreland and writing the song about him in a concert known as the "D.C. Sessions." (thanks, Michael - Cleveland, OH)

The lyrics to this song didn't come easy, as they were very personal and intense. In our interview with Johnette Napolitano , she told the story: "We did a demo with no lyrics. It was just like scratchy vocals, just me making sounds, basically, where I knew the melody would go. And right away everybody reacted to it. There weren't any lyrics, but there was something about the music that everybody really reacted to. And so we went to England to record the record with Chris Tsangarides, our producer. I knew what I wanted to say, but I wasn't looking forward to saying it. And so it was the last vocal that I recorded.

And I remember Chris every day, 'Do we have vocals to 'Joey' yet? Do we have words to 'Joey' yet?' And I'm like, 'Not yet.' So I literally wrote them in a cab. I knew what I was going to say, it's just a matter of like a cloud's forming and then it rains. The lines are forming in my head and they're all in my head, and I know the chorus, and I know what I'm going to say. It's just a matter of fine tuning the details and how I'm going to lug it out. And then it rains. The clouds all formed and it rained. And then it happened. And that was it. And it was just there."

This is by far the biggest hit for Concrete Blonde, and their only one to make the Hot 100 (they have placed several songs on the Modern Rock charts). Johnette Napolitano has expressed little interest in hit singles or album sales, which led to tensions with the group's label, I.R.S. Records, which signed them in 1986. After five albums with I.R.S., including the gold-certified Bloodletting, the label offered them a deal where the group was sold to Capitol Records.

The group still refused to serve the musical tastes of a wider audience, and they ended up on independent labels. These days, their artistic credibility is unquestioned, but at the time, they took some criticism for daring to have a hit song. Napolitano addressed this in a 1993 interview with Happening when she said: "People call that song a 'sell-out' only because it sold records. If I could intentionally write a Top 40 song, don't you think I would have done it on the first album?"

The video drove hope the alcoholic theme. It featured Napolitano with the band playing in a small club while one lone patron drinks to excess. It was the only Concrete Blonde song to receive significant airplay on MTV.

This was a #1 hit for 4 weeks on the US Modern Rock charts. It gained popularity as "alternative" music was coming into the mainstream and radio stations were looking for stuff like this to play. Finding female voices was particularly problematic for radio program directors in this era of Pearl Jam, so this song was a welcome addition to many playlists.

"By the end of a tour my leather is ready for the dump as it is all beat up. When we finish a tour we are physically and mentally exhausted which means we've done a good job. It is a little bit of that."
