Michael, You've Got A Lot To Answer For Lyrics

Michael, You've Got A Lot To Answer For
  • This song is about Simon Lebon's friendship with Michael Hutchence of INXS. The song appears on the band's album Medazzaland, which was released in the US, but nowhere else thanks to their goofed up contracts at the time. Medazzaland was released on October 14, 1997. Michael Hutchence died on on November 22, 1997. Duran Duran was on tour at the time; the night of Michael's death they performed an abbreviated, mournful show in Cleveland, Ohio. Numerous songs from the regular set list were cut out (including "So Long Suicide" from Medazzaland) and the entire performance was dedicated to Michael's memory. (thanks, Sarai - New York, NY)
  • In an interview with Q magazine (February 2008) vocalist Simon Le Bon said: "'Michael, You've Got A Lot To Answer For' was about Michael being a naughty boy in the South of France and London when he was living with Paula (Yates). He did like his substances. I couldn't keep up with him. No way. We all know that Michael liked drugs."
  • In the same interview, Le Bon revealed that the Medazzaland album was named after the anesthetic he'd been prescribed for his dental work: "It's the name of the state of suspended consciousness you are in when you are given the intravenous sedative midazolam. Yes, I know it sounds a bit wayward, but it's a genuinely weird experience. You are sentient but numb. And afterwards you can't remember a thing that went on."

    Red River
  • This song finds Petty questioning blind faith as he sings of a woman who is into speaking in tongues and also possesses both a rosary and a rabbit's foot. "I'm a big fan of the things Jesus had to say," he told USA Today. "I'm not religious at all and I never heard him say I had to be. But I do hear him saying God is within you."

"('Red River') is not quite that deep," Petty added. "I was having fun with the idea of this girl trying to find whatever it is she's looking for, and she's not sure what that is."

    For being strange
    Our love is no other

    For me all day
    Our love is like water/angels

    Shadow People Lyrics

    Shadow People
  • This song is about the everyday folks all around us who have lost their humanity. Petty explained to Billboard magazine: "It's about what's missing — why is the 'human' missing from humanity? I think the level of caring about other people is disappearing."
  • Petty sings here about the fear and hate that triggers gun violence without taking political sides.

Well, I ain't on the left and I ain't on the right
I ain't even sure I got a dog in this fight

The singer explained to USA Today: "I'm not extremely political. I just look at what makes sense to me. I would think we'd be in the streets demanding that our children be safe in schools. I see friendships end over politics. I've never seen such anger. That's not how it's supposed to work. In a two-party system, ideas are argued and you compromise. You're not supposed to stop the process."

    Knock Three Times Lyrics

Hey girl what ya doin' down there
Dancin' alone every night while I live right above you
I can hear your music playin'
I can feel your body swayin'
One floor below me you don't even know me
    I love you
    Oh my darling
Knock Three Times on the ceiling if you want me
Twice on the pipe if the answer is no
    Oh my sweetness
Means you'll meet me in the hallway
Twice on the pipe means you ain't gonna show
If you look out your window tonight
Pull in the string with the note that's attached to my heart
Read how many times I saw you
How in my silence I adored you
Only in my dreams did that wall between us come apart
    Oh my darling
Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me
Twice on the pipe if the answer is no
    Oh my sweetness
Means you'll meet me in the hallway
Twice on the pipe means you ain't gonna show
I can hear your music playin'
I can feel your body swayin'
One floor below me you don't even know me
    I love you
    Oh my darling
Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me

    Knock Three Times
  • This song is about a guy who falls in lust with his downstairs neighbor. She doesn't know him, but he obsesses over her and leaves her a note one day with an elaborate plan to pursue a relationship: she is instructed to knock 3 times on the ceiling if she wants him, and to bang twice on the pipe if not. We don't find out how she responds, but he would probably have better luck if he just talked to her.
  • The producers of this song persuaded their old friend Tony Orlando (then working for the publishing arm of CBS Records) to record his lead vocal on a pair of demos after Bell Records' bigwigs didn't like the original lead singer.
  • Dawn was a group named after the daughter of a promotion man at Bell Records. The members of Dawn were Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent. Hopkins is an actress and has had roles on the TV shows Bosom Buddies, Gimme A Break and Family Matters. When this was recorded, however, there was no Dawn. Backup singers on the Candida album included Toni Wine (who wrote the song "Candida"), Jay Siegel (from The Tokens), Robin Grean and Linda November. (For more, check out our interview with Toni Wine.)
  • Tony Orlando was born Michael Anthony Orlando Cassivitis. He had hits "Halfway to Paradise" (#39) and "Bless You" (#15) in 1961 as a 16-year-old.

    Down on My Luck Lyrics

    Down on My Luck
  • Chicago rapper Vic Mensa first appeared in the hip-hop group Kids These Days, but when the band split up in 2013, he found himself - you guessed it - down on his luck.

This song came out of that time - he was broke and sleeping on a friend's couch in Hollywood while trying to get his solo career going. He hated Hollywood and was feeling depressed. Still, most of the music he was making was happy sounding, which didn't reflect what he was feeling. On this song, he expressed the gloom and apprehension that marked his true state of mind.

With some help from this song, Mensa pulled out of his funk and got his own place in Hollywood, which he decided wasn't so bad after all.
  • This is the lead single from his debut EP Street Lights. It finds Mensa rapping about how despite his quickly increasing fame and popularity, he still gets down on his luck. The Chicago spitter turns to drugs in order to escape from these hard times, but in the process he loses valuable time when he could be working on his career.
  • After guesting on Chance the Rapper's Acid Rap, Mensa released his mixtape Innanetape in September 2013. This song was conceived for that project, but didn't fit. After a tour with J. Cole, he repurposed the song, putting the lyrics to a house music beat created by his producer, Stefan Ponce, using Logic Pro software.

When they put the song together, Mensa and Ponce were thinking ahead to their next tour (Ponce served as Mensa's DJ for live performances), a trek with Disclosure. The music they came up with fit the vibe of tour, but also let listeners in on Mensa's story with this very personal track.
  • Mensa says that James Blake's music was an influence on the vocal processing of this song, especially the pitch shifts.

    Adam's Song
  • According to Liza Bermingham, who was tour manager with the band, Blink-182 bass player Mark Hoppus wrote this when he was in a state of depression about being on tour and away from his family. The end of the song is a message that things will get better. (thanks, AMELIA - Melbourne, Australia)
  • Guitarist Tom DeLonge: "The story behind that is Mark read a letter someone sent him as an email, that a kid wrote before he committed suicide to his parents. We kind of got together and wrote this sad, slow song. It came out sadder than we ever thought it would, which is good too. Any song that moves you is good. Some people listen to it and go 'Wow, that's a real bum-out of a song.' But it's one of those things, a story of a kid not being happy in his life, crossed with us being really lonely on tour. At the end of it there's a better way out, there are better things to do than kill yourself." (thanks, Kaity - Harrisburg, PA)
  • The lyrics, "I traced the cord back to the wall, no wonder it was never plugged in at all" were inspired when guitarist Tom Delonge was playing in his garage and he and his amp were in a puddle. Luckily, the amp was not plugged in or he could have been electrocuted. (thanks Joe P. - Chicago, Illinois)
  • The line "I took my time, I hurried up, the choice was mine, I didn't think enough" refers to the 1991 Nirvana's song "Come As You Are." There, the line is, "Take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours, don't be late."

    Charlotte Sometimes Lyrics

    All the faces
    All the voices blur
    Change to one face
    Change to one voice
    Prepare yourself for bed
    The light seems bright
    And glares on white walls
    All the sounds of
    Charlotte Sometimes
    Into the night with
    Charlotte sometimes

Night after night she lay alone in bed
Her eyes so open to the dark
The streets all looked so strange
    They seemed so far away
    But Charlotte did not cry

    The people seemed so close
    Playing expressionless games
    The people seemed so close
    So many other names

    Sometimes I'm dreaming
Where all the other people dance
    Sometimes I'm dreaming
    Charlotte sometimes
    Sometimes I'm dreaming
    Expressionless the trance
    Sometimes I'm dreaming
    So many different names
    Sometimes I'm dreaming
The sounds all stay the same
    Sometimes I'm dreaming
She hopes to open shadowed eyes
    On a different world
    Come to me scared princess
    Charlotte sometimes

    On that bleak track
(see the sun is gone again)
The tears were pouring down her face
She was crying and crying for a girl
Who died so many years before

    Sometimes I dream
Where all the other people dance
    Sometimes I dream
    Charlotte sometimes
    Sometimes I dream
The sounds all stay the same
    Sometimes I'm dreaming
There are so many different names
    Sometimes I dream
    Sometimes I dream

    Charlotte sometimes crying for herself
Charlotte sometimes dreams a wall around herself
    But it's always with love
With so much love it looks like
    Everything else
    Of Charlotte sometimes
    So far away
    Glass sealed and pretty
    Charlotte sometimes

  • This song is based on one of Robert Smith's favorite books: a 1969 novel called Charlotte Sometimes by the British author Penelope Farmer. In the book, the title character finds herself transported 40 years back in time. Smith wrote this song using the same themes of time shifting and displacement.
  • During the filming of the video at a disused lunatic asylum in Virginia Water, Robert Smith found drawings by old inmates. Smith's fascination with the drawings led to the band's performances at benefit concerts for MENCAP (The Society For the Mentally Handicapped).
  • The American singer/songwriter Jessica Poland goes by the alias Charlotte Sometimes.

    Close To Me Lyrics

    I've waited hours for this,
    I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today,
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
    This Close To Me

Just try to see in the dark,
Just try to make it work,
To feel the fear before you're here
I make the shapes come much too close,
    I pull my eyes out,
    Hold my breath,
    And wait until I shake

But if I had your faith,
Then I could make it safe and clean
    If only I was sure,
That my head on the door was a dream

    I've waited hours for this,
    I've made myself so sick,
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end,
I never thought tonight could ever be
    This close to me

But if I had your face,
Then I could make it safe and clean
    If only I was sure,
That my head on the door,
    Was a dream

  • The idea for the video came from a dream Robert Smith had where he was locked in a linen closet that fell off a cliff and into the ocean. (thanks, slave6 - Houston, TX)
  • Robert Smith (from Q Magazine's 1001 Best Songs Ever): "It's weird because of all the songs we've written, Close To Me doesn't spring to mind as one of our best songs. It was a slightly surreal moment on the record and it wasn't even a definite album track during the recording. It was only when I did the vocal and got really extreme on the production, making it really claustrophobic sounding, that it came to life. Up till that point it was average."

"The video had quite a big impact too. I suggested to Tim (Pope, director) doing it in a wardrobe on top of a cliff because of the uncomfortable feeling and I think that cemented it in the Cure canon."
  • In 1990, a remix of this called the "closet mix" was released as a single, going to #13 in the UK. Another version of the song, the "closer mix," was included on the album Mixed Up.

Whoa oh oh oh oh oh oh whoa oh oh whoa oh oh
Whoa oh oh oh oh oh oh whoa oh oh whoa oh oh

It's amazing the time that it's taking for you to come out here
I don't know what you do in there
Only so many ways you can change how light will hit your face
Or how you can fix your hair
You only got two eyes, two lips so why
It shouldn't really take long at all
But when you finally smile, 'cause it's just right
    Damn, you look beautiful

You take Forever, ever, ever, ever, hm
But you're always worth waiting for
You take forever, ever, ever, ever, hm
    I guess I'll wait a little more
Now I know it's time I realize I'mma be waiting half my life, yeah
With my back up against the door
'Cause you take forever, ever, ever, ever, ever ever ever
But you're always worth waiting for

And you lie through your teeth
When you try to convince me that you'll be
That you'll be out in less than five
Because we both know that the only way that you will ever leave
Is if we set the whole place on fire

You already said you had the perfect dress
So why you gotta try more
No matter how late it gets I must confess
    Damn you look beautiful

You take forever, ever, ever, ever, hm
But you're always worth waiting for
You take forever, ever, ever, ever, oh yeah
    I guess I'll wait a little more
Now I know it's time I realize I'mma be spending half my life, yeah

  • Eric Clapton provided inspiration for this song. "I really wanted to write a song like Eric Clapton's 'Wonderful Tonight,'" Grammar told Radio.com . "It's just such a sweet sentiment. It's so simple but so genuine."

"Everyone has had that moment that he's talking about in that song," he continued. "It's almost too sweet but I know that feeling so it gets a pass. 'Forever' is that. Women take so long to get ready but when they get out of the bathroom they look smokin' hot. That's the struggle of men throughout history waiting by the door. The wait is so worth it. Always."

    I called you after midnight
    Then ran until I burst
    I passed the howling woman
    And stood outside your door
    We walked around the lake
And woke up in the rain
    And everyone turned over
    Troubled in their dreams again

    Visiting time is over
    And so we walk away
And both play dead then cry out loud
Why we always cry this way?

I kissed you in the water
And made your dry lips sing
    I saw you look
    Like a Japanese baby
In an instant I remembered everything

    I called you after midnight
Then ran until my heart burst

  • When this was first released many people thought The Cure had ripped off the sound of New Order's "Blue Monday." Though many fingers were pointed at The Cure, no actions were ever taken due to the fact that this was written and recorded before, but released after "Blue Monday." The likeness between the two was proven to be nothing more than coincidence.
  • There have been several versions of this track. The band re-recorded it for their 1990 remix album Mixed up, as the original master tapes had been lost. They also recorded an acoustic version for their 2001 Greatest Hits album, which included a bonus disc featuring exclusively acoustic renderings of their songs.
  • This was the first Cure song to enter the UK top 20, and it put unprecedented pressures on the band for commercial success. In a 1983 interview with the Italian magazine Rockerilla, vocalist and primary lyricist Robert Smith said: "There was so much pressure around 'The Walk' because it went in the charts and now everyone wants another single. We must resist this temptation, I'm tired of being bound to the same group of people, the same music area. People don't understand why we split up, since this would be the ideal moment to take advantage of three years of incessant touring. Everyone was saying that our next album would be the definitive one, but we decided to call it quits without reaching our initial goals."
