How Do You Sleep?

Lennon wrote this at the height of his feud with Paul McCartney after The Beatles broke up. Each line of the song is an attack on some aspect of McCartney's life or music at the time. For instance, the line "Everything you done was yesterday. Since you gone you're just another day" refers to Paul's song "Yesterday" with The Beatles and his first solo single "Another Day." John felt that Paul's greatest work was behind him.

When the Imagine album was originally released, it contained a postcard of John holding the ears of a large pig. This was making fun of Paul's 1971 album cover for Ram, released before Imagine, where Paul is pictured holding the horns of a ram. On the back of the Ram album, Paul included a picture of two beetles 'screwing,' or saying to John 'screw' you from one Beatle to another.

The feud between Lennon and McCartney originated after The Beatles manager Brian Epstein passed away. Paul wanted his new father-in-law to manage the group while the other Beatles wanted the notorious Allen Klein. Lennon and McCartney maintained a frosty relationship after the band broke up. By most accounts, McCartney contacted Lennon periodically, but was often rebuffed. The last time they saw each other was two years before Lennon's death when they shared dinner in New York. In a 2008 interview with The Times of London, McCartney said: "The answer to John was well - I was sleeping very well at the time. Before John died I got back a good relationship with him. That was very special. The arguments we had didn't matter. We were able to just take the piss about all those songs; they weren't that harsh. In fact, I have been thanked by Yoko and everyone else for saving the Beatles from Allen Klein. Everything comes round in the end."

Some of Lennon's lyrics refer to McCartney's "Too Many People" from his album Ram (Hence the pig postcard). The lyrics from "Too Many People" that referred to Lennon: "Too many people preaching practices" and "You took your lucky break and broke it in two." (thanks, John - Watertown, WI)

Nicky Hopkins, an Apple records protégé who Paul McCartney produced on his song "Those Are The Days My Friend," played piano on this.

George Harrison played lead guitar on this track, and Klaus Voorrman played the bass. Voorman, an old friend from The Beatles Hamburg days, did the cover collage for The Beatles album Revolver. Lennon discussed this song in an interview with BBC Radio 1 DJ Andy Peebles on December 6, 1980, four days before his death. He recalled: "I used my resentment against Paul, that I have as a kind of sibling rivalry resentment from youth, to write a song. It was a creative rivalry… It was not a vicious vendetta… but I felt resentment, so I used that situation the same as I used withdrawing from heroin to write Cold Turkey; I used my resentment and withdrawing from Paul and the Beatles to write How Do You Sleep?" Bars & Melody are a teenage rap duo comprising Leondre Devries and Charlie Lenehan. The pair came to the public attention after finishing in third place on the 2014 series of Britain's Got Talent. This is their first single after signing a record deal with Simon Cowell's label Syco.

The song is based around the lyrics and music of Twista's single "Hope," which peaked at #25 on the UK singles chart in 2005. The original track mainly focused on the American rapper's view on the War on Terrorism, but Leondre wrote new anti-bullying lyrics after being relentlessly picked-on in school by a group of boys. "For me, this whole experience has been about connecting with other kids who are going through what I went through," he said. "I've talked to so many people and it's given me an amazing confidence and strength and it just makes me amazingly happy to be able to be in this position to do so much more."

This is a cover of a John Kongos song called "He's Gonna Step On You Again," originally released in 1971. It was written by Kongos and Christos Demitriou and hit #4 UK and #70 US. (thanks, Gerard - Sheffield, England)

The Happy Mondays never caught on in America, where this was the closest they came to a hit.

John Kongos wrote this as a protest song against white man's appropriation of native territory in Africa. It was built around a riff lifted from an African tribal dance recorded in a jungle, and it is cited by the Guinness Book of Records as the first ever sample used on a record.

John Kongos was a South African singer/multi instrumentalist who settled in the UK in 1966. In 1971 he recorded his debut album Kongos, which was produced by Gus Dudgeon and includes both this and his other hit single, "Tokolshe Man." Kongos was later a top session musician (he produced and played keyboards on Def Leppard's 1983 album Pyromania) and also scored the 1978 film The Greek Tycoon. Arrows

Fences is a Seattle three-piece comprising frontman Christopher Mansfield, keyboardist Ben Greenspan and bassist Lindsey Starr. This song features Mansfield detailing a story of being kicked out of home by his father and breaking out on his own.

Fellow Seattle resident Macklemore jumps in after the second chorus, spitting rhymes about fame and fortune. They include a play on words on a famous Bruce Springsteen tune as he raps about being "blinded by this limelight."

Macklemore wrote one of his verses in December 2013 while he was on a short break following his and Ryan's breakout success. "I think a lot of it is still relevant because I wrote the second verse later," he told MTV News. "I think a lot of it is still there, it might be for a while."

Macklemore's music partner, Ryan Lewis, contributed production for the tune. Once the Seattle rapper was added to the track, Mansfield told Billboard magazine Lewis was the obvious choice to tweak the knobs: "He was by far the best person to wrap it up and put the bow on it."

Macklemore and Christopher Mansfield are good buddies - the latter earned a co-writing credit on the Heist track "10,000 Hours." "Fences is a good friend," Macklemore told Billboard magazine. "He's fu---d up in the same way that I'm fu---d up. Because of that, our lives relate beyond the music."

"I've always admired his talent for illustrating with words and evoking imagery, the rapper added. "We've made a bunch of stuff together over the years and this here song about Arrows is my favorite one we've done."

Mansfield told MTV News that he "almost cried" after hearing Macklemore's verses for the first time. "I was really nervous," he said. "And I put my computer by my window in Brooklyn and I lit a cigarette and I listened all nervous, and I was like, 'Oh my god' - I almost cried. It was so good because he said a lot of things, powerful stuff."

Sister Golden Hair

Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley are the primary songwriters in America - both also sing and play a variety of instruments.

"Sister Golden Hair" was written and sung by Beckley, who says that it was based on a composite of different girls. When asked if it was written to anyone, Beckley said: "No, this is all poetic license. With 'Sister Golden Hair,' as far as my folks were concerned, I was writing a song about my sister, and I couldn't quite fathom it; they must not have listened to the lyrics." In our interview with Gerry Beckley , he explained that he made a demo of this song before America recorded their fourth album, Holiday, but he was happy with the songs they chose for that album so "Sister Golden Hair" sat on the shelf for a year, making the cut for their next album, Hearts.

"I can't really tell you if it was a lack of faith in the song or not, but it was interesting to see," he said. "It shows you that songs can have a life of their own - they might just need the right time and circumstances to surface."

This song was used in a bloody scene in a 2001 episode of the TV series The Sopranos. It also appears in the movies Cherish (2002), Radio (2003) and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006).

George Martin, who was The Beatles producer, produced this track and the rest of the Hearts album (he started working with America on their previous album, Holiday). It was Martin's 20th US #1 as a producer, and his first away from The Beatles. He would have three more: "Ebony and Ivory," "Say Say Say" and "Candle In The Wind."

Phil Hartman, who was a graphic designer before his star turn in Saturday Night Live, designed the cover to the Hearts album.

This song is about Simon Lebon's friendship with Michael Hutchence of INXS. The song appears on the band's album Medazzaland, which was released in the US, but nowhere else thanks to their goofed up contracts at the time. Medazzaland was released on October 14, 1997. Michael Hutchence died on on November 22, 1997. Duran Duran was on tour at the time; the night of Michael's death they performed an abbreviated, mournful show in Cleveland, Ohio. Numerous songs from the regular set list were cut out (including "So Long Suicide" from Medazzaland) and the entire performance was dedicated to Michael's memory. (thanks, Sarai - New York, NY)

In an interview with Q magazine (February 2008) vocalist Simon Le Bon said: "'Michael, You've Got A Lot To Answer For' was about Michael being a naughty boy in the South of France and London when he was living with Paula (Yates). He did like his substances. I couldn't keep up with him. No way. We all know that Michael liked drugs."

In the same interview, Le Bon revealed that the Medazzaland album was named after the anesthetic he'd been prescribed for his dental work: "It's the name of the state of suspended consciousness you are in when you are given the intravenous sedative midazolam. Yes, I know it sounds a bit wayward, but it's a genuinely weird experience. You are sentient but numb. And afterwards you can't remember a thing that went on."
