The Hero's Return Lyrics

Jesus, Jesus, what's it all about?
Trying to clout these little ingrates into shape.
When I was their age all the lights went out.
There was no time to whine or mope about.
And even now part of me flies over
Dresden at angels one five.
Though they'll never fathom it begind my
Sarcasm desperate memories lie.

Sweetheart sweetheart are you fast asleep? Good.
Cause that's the only time that I can really speak to you.
And there is something that I've locked away
A memory that is too painful
To withstand the light of day.

When we came back from the war the banners and
Flags hung on everyone's door.
We danced and we sang in the street and
The church bells rang.
But burning in my heart
My memory smolders on
Of the gunners dying words on the intercom.

The Hero's Return
  • Roger Waters wrote all of the songs on The Final Cut, which was his last album with Pink Floyd. In "The Hero's Return," he sings about the homecoming of a soldier who needs understanding but receives adulation, which does him no good. Waters was very much antiwar, as he saw the trauma inflicted on the returning soldiers. He says that the character in this song is the teacher portrayed in the 1979 Pink Floyd album The Wall - a person with considerable demons whose only job prospect is in the school system. At the end of this song, we learn that our hero is haunted by hearing his war comrade's dying voice over an intercom.
  • This song has a missing last verse:
"Jesus Christ, I might as well be dead
if I can't see how dangerous it must feel to be
training human cogs for the machine
without some shell-shocked lunatic like me
    bombarding their still soft shores
with sticks and stones that were lying around
in the pile of unspeakable feelings I'd found
when I turned back the stone turned over the stone
of my own disappointment back home."
This verse references "lunatic" from "Brain Damage," and The Machine from the Wish You Where Here album. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington)

  • This is a track from Danish singer-songwriter Mø's No Mythologies to Follow album. She told NME that the record is about "being a young, restless and lost in their modern world." Mø added that songs such as "Walk This Way" reject "the media glorifying eternal youth, fame and money."
  • Mø's music is made together with producer Ronni Vindahl. This song was drafted backstage in Birmingham when the Danish singer was on tour with AlunaGeorge. "I was singing the hook, he quickly wrote the track and that was it," she told NME. "The album wasn't really made in one place. Tracks were written in Norway, Los Angeles, the UK, Denmark. Sail On Sailor Lyrics

I sailed an ocean, unsettled ocean
Through restful waters and deep commotion
    Often frightened, unenlightened
    Sail on, Sail On Sailor

I wrest the waters, fight Neptune's waters
Sail through the sorrows of life's marauders
    Unrepenting, often empty
    Sail on, sail on sailor

Caught like a sewer rat alone but I sail
Bought like a crust of bread, but oh do I wail

    Seldom stumble, never crumble
Try to tumble, life's a rumble
Feel the stinging I've been given
    Never ending, unrelenting
    Heartbreak searing, always fearing
    Never caring, persevering
    Sail on, sail on, sailor

I work the seaways, the gale-swept seaways
Past shipwrecked daughters of wicked waters
    Uninspired, drenched and tired
    Wail on, wail on, sailor

    Always needing, even bleeding
    Never feeding all my feelings
Damn the thunder, must I blunder
There's no wonder all I'm under
Stop the crying and the lying
And the sighing and my dying

    Sail on, sail on sailor
    Sail on, sail on sailor
    Sail on, sail on sailor
    Sail on, sail on sailor
    Sail on, sail on sailor
    Sail on, sail on sailor

    Sail On Sailor
  • This song was the centerpiece of a long and convoluted story regarding the recording of the Holland album. The Beach Boys relocated to the Netherlands in 1972 to record this album away from the pressures of Los Angeles. They spent exorbitant amounts of money building a studio on a farm in Baambrugge, Holland recording it. When the band turned the album over to Dave Bursyn at Warner Bros., he rejected it because there was no potential single. Bursyn called Brian Wilson friend and collaborator Van Dyke Parks , and asked if there was anything they had worked on - even a kernel of a song - that they might be able to transform into a hit. Wilson was still showing flickers of genius at this time, but had become very unpredictable and far less productive. Parks, who wrote lyrics for Wilson's songs during the Smile sessions, was one of the few people in close contact with Wilson at the time and had a cassette containing fragments of a song that he and Brian started, that being "Sail On Sailor." Parks was able to get Wilson to sit down at a piano and finish the song, a session that was recorded on cassette and reveals Wilson constantly veering off course while Parks exhorts him to "Write a f--king middle-eight" and at one point has to convince Wislon that he is not insane.

When the song was finally written, the other Beach Boys recorded it without Wilson and tacked it onto the album, replacing a Ricky Fataar/Blondie Chaplin/Mike Love song called "We Got Love."
  • This features a soulful lead vocal from guitarist Blondie Chaplin. (thanks, Bill - Hendersonville, NC, for above 2)
  • Dennis Wilson was the original lead singer of the song. On the day he was supposed to record his lead vocal, he had just purchased a new surfboard and couldn't wait to break it in. His impatience got the best of him, and he left the session with only a partially-recorded vocal and went surfing. Carl Wilson then asked Blondie Chaplin to sing lead. (thanks, Sean - Chicago, IL)
  • This song was released as a single twice; it reached #79 in the US in 1973. Two years later, it was rereleased and reached #49.
  • This was one of just two songs Brian Wilson wrote for the Holland album. The other was the closing track "Funky Pretty."
  • Besides Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks, there are three other guys credited for writing this song: Jack Rieley, Tandyn Almer and Ray Kennedy. Almer wrote The Association's "Along Comes Mary" and was friends with Wilson; Rieley was The Beach Boys manager and wrote lyrics for some of their songs; Ray Kennedy was a musician and songwriter that started working on the song with Wilson in 1970.

    Torn To Pieces Lyrics

Here I sit all alone like an airplane
On the edge of a sky full of solid gray
Staring at the ceiling, tell me that I’m dreaming
Oh, I wish you were here today
All these days I know I’ll never get back
All these words I know I wish I should’ve said
All these dreams that we had now fade to black
    Try to wash it away

I’m Torn To Pieces, I’m broken down
I still see your face when you’re not around
I sit here in misery wondering if I’ll ever be
Half the man you wanted me to be

Here I float through the air like a waterfall
Than I sink to the bottom like a cannonball
Having trouble breathing, suddenly I’m screaming
    Why wasn’t I good enough
Even though I know you’re not gonna come back
    I can’t wash it away

I’m torn to pieces, I’m broken down
I still see your face when you’re not around
I sit here in misery wondering if I’ll ever be
Half the man you wanted me to be

I’m torn to pieces, I’m broken down
I still see your face when you’re not around
I sit here in misery wondering if I’ll ever be
Half the man you wanted me to be

    It’s tearing me to pieces
    Tearing me to pieces
    It’s tearing me to pieces
    Tearing me to pieces

Even though I know you’re not gonna come back
    I can’t wash it away

I’m torn to pieces, I’m broken down

    Torn To Pieces
  • This song deals with the loss of frontman Leigh Kakaty 's father. He said: "There's nothing more haunting and torturous to the human soul than the feeling of losing someone close to you without saying goodbye."
  • Veteran Swedish director Johan Carlén directed the visual, which was Pop Evil's fourth video installment from their Onyx album. "Digging up the past can be very difficult," said Kakaty. "Losing someone close to you has a healing process, and I choose to do it through this video."

Other music clips on Carlén's resume include the ones for Avatar's "Smells Like a Freakshow and Diamond Dawn's "Take Me Higher."
  • The song is very personal to Leigh Kakaty. "'Torn To Pieces' is a song that's very close to me," he told The Pulse of Radio . "You know, after losing my father on [second album] War Of Angels, it was a song that I had written for myself for personal reasons. And the band kind of stepped in and said, 'Look, if this song can help others, you know, I really think you should stop being selfish and, you know, let others heal from it.' You know, I took that to heart — you know, when the guys talk, they're usually right."

There's nothing for me here it's all the same
    And even though I know
    That everything might go
Go downhill from here I'm not afraid

Way Away away from here I'll be
Way away away so you can see
How it feels to be alone and not believe
    Anything

    You can't stop me now
    You can't hold me down
You can't keep me here I'm on my way
I made it this far now
    And I'm not burning out
No matter what you say I'm not afraid

Way away away from here I'll be
Way away away so you can see

  • This is about Ryan Key, the lead singer, speaking to the idea that people are ultimately the masters of their own destiny. They're talking about really owning up to what you want to do in your life. He cites his own personal journey from dropping out of college to pursue his dream of being a songwriter, and the band's decision to leave their hometown of Jacksonville for California. "It's like, I'm not going to stay here just because you tell me I have to. A lot of those people who say that are doing the 9-to-5 and they're not happy. You have to do what you want to do," Ryan says. (thanks, Maryalice - Islip Terrace, NY)

    Later On
  • The Muskogee, Oklahoma Country sibling act Zach and Colton Swon grew up right down the street from Carrie Underwood, and the three shared a stage many times together throughout their childhood years. Traveling with their parents' southern Gospel group Exodus, the boys were singing and writing songs practically as soon as they could walk. In 1995, the Swon Brothers' parents formed a family-style variety show called Westwood Music Show, in which the pair first started performing in the country music genre. Five years later when they were 12 and 15, the siblings started calling themselves The Swon Brothers, and appeared in various venues.

Auditioning in 2007 for American Idol after witnessing Carrie Underwood's massive success on the talent competition, Colton made it all the way to the Top 48. Zach never tried out because he didn't feel comfortable without an instrument in his arms.

The Swons spent the subsequent years performing around their home state and releasing a couple of independent albums that were well-received among their ever-growing fan base. The sibling pair achieved national fame in 2013, when they finished in third place on the fourth season of The Voice.

The duo signed a record deal with Arista on November 1, 2013 and released this romantic-night-in story as their first official single, the following month. The song shot to #1 on iTunes' Country Top Songs within 24 hours.
  • The song officially impacted Country radio on March 3, 2014. It received 81 combined Country Aircheck and Billboard adds in its first seven days on radio, the most one-week adds of any debut single in Country Aircheck history.
  • The tune was penned by Ryan Hurd (Jake Owen's "Surefire Feeling") and newcomers Joey Hyde, and Justin Wilson. It was produced by Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood, Sara Evans).
  • The Swon Brothers knew as soon they heard this song that they wanted to cut it. "What made us pick 'Later On' was just those harmony-driven lines," Zach said. "It's just one of those songs that stuck with us, you know. We listened to over a thousand songs probably, to put on the record. We just had an attraction to it and loved it."

"It's simple enough for people to remember," he added. "It also just hits this sweet spot that me and Colton create this brother harmony together that I think really compliments us."

I Can Never Go Home Anymore Lyrics

I'm gonna hide if she don't leave me alone
    I'm gonna run away
    Don't!!

Cause you can never go home anymore

Listen. Does this sound familiar? You wake up every morning, go to
School every day, spend your nights on the corner just passing the time away.
Your life is so lonely like a child without a toy. Then a miracle-a boy. And that's
Called "glad." Now my mom is a good mom and she loves me with all her heart.
But she said I was too young to be in love and the boy and I would have to part.
And no matter how I ranted and raved, I screamed, I pleaded, I cried-she told me it
Was not really love but only my girlish pride. And that's called "bad."

    (Never go home anymore)

Now if that's happened to you, don't let this. I packed my clothes and
Left home that night. Though she begged me to stay, I was sure I was right. And
You know something funny?? I forgot that boy right away. Instead I remember
Being tucked in bed and hearing my mama say

(Hush, little baby, don't you cry)
    (Mama won't go away)
    Mama!!!

(You can never go home anymore)
    Mama!!!
I Can Never Go Home Anymore

Do you ever get that feeling and want to kiss and hug her? Do it now
Tell her you love her. Don't do to your mom what I did to mine. She grew so lonely
In the end. Angels picked her for a friend.

    (Never)
And I can never go home (never) anymore
    And that's called "sad".

I Can Never Go Home Anymore
  • This is a tale of a teenage girl who threatens to run away if her mother won't let her do as she pleases. The girl is advised not to leave home by another girl (the lead character) who did the same thing and now regrets it. When the lead girl fell in love with a boy, her mother told her to break up with him because she was too young to be in love. Strangely enough, after she left home, she forgot the boy completely, and her mind filled with memories of her caring mother. It's too late for the lead girl to return home because her mother died of a broken heart.
  • This was the Shangri-Las last US Top 10 hit.
  • Originally, this was not included on the album. It was added after it became a hit single. Later on, the album's name was changed with this as the title track. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for all above)

    Dirty Mind
  • It's far from his most lascivious song, but this early Prince track finds him letting a girl know that when he sees her, his thoughts turn dirty. It's not the most sophisticated pickup line, but it certainly makes the intention clear. A few years later, Dexys Midnight Runners scored a huge hit with "Come On Eileen," a song where lead singer Kevin Rowland reveals his dirty thoughts.
  • The keyboard riff in this song was created by The Revolution's "Doctor Fink." He was the first band member to receive a songwriting credit on a Prince song.
  • This was the last Prince video to feature Revolution member Andre Cymone, who left to start a solo career in 1981. His debut song, "The Dance Electric," was written by Prince and became a hit on the R&B charts.

    Pray
  • A track from the Dublin band Kodaline's first album, "Pray" finds lead singer Steve Garrigan asking, "Do you pray for me?"

Garrigan wrote the song with guitarist Mark Prendergast and drummer Vinny May. When we spoke with May in 2014 , we asked him if this song reflected a spiritual side of the band. He replied: "We're all from Ireland and that's a Catholic place, but we're not really religious people. We don't go to church every day. That song is just a vehicle, kind of like an expression. Just saying that someone's going to pray for you, and asking if that is something you would do to try to help somebody: say a prayer for them. It's not because we're very spiritual people at all. We're Catholics, but it's got no bearing on our music."

    Roll these misty windows down
    To catch my breath
And then go and go and go just drive me
    Home and back again

Here I lay just like always
    Don't let me go
    Take me to the edge

  • This is about having sex in a car: "Roll these (misty) windows down."
  • This features Maynard James Keenan - lead singer of Tool and A Perfect Circle. (thanks, Ryan - Rosemount, MN)
  • Lead singer Chino Moreno (on Maynard's appearance): "Having Maynard perform on the record wasn't something that we planned on doing. We didn't plan on having any guest on the record. But being a fan of Tool and A Perfect Circle, once Maynard was involved, it was just a magical thing for us. Honestly, when he first started working with us, he wasn't supposed to sing with us. He was just working on the arrangements, riff structures, time signatures, and things like that. I don't know if you're a big fan of Tool's music, but they're really mathematical. I've been to their rehearsal space, and there's this big chart that just looks like calculus--the way they write songs, it's just crazy. It was good to have someone else who has different ways of writing songs, 'cause everyone has a different way of doing it. He came in and we started working on this one song in particular, and he just grabbed the microphone and started singing along to it, and my jaw just dropped. All of a sudden our band sounded like Tool; it was just crazy. Then, probably two months later, we went in to record the album, and I went in to record the vocals on it, and I just kept hearing his voice, this re-occurring melody with his voice coming over it. So I called him and asked him if he wanted to come down and sing on the record, and he had no problem with it. Once he came in, I gave him sort of what I wanted the song to be about, and he wrote a couple of ideas down, and the next day he came in with all the lyrics written all out with blank spaces where my lyrics were supposed to be. He's very professional like that. He wants everything set perfectly, which is the complete opposite to the way that I write, so it was cool. And then I went in and did my vocals over it, and it just seemed that our voices blended together pretty good. Yeah, it came out pretty good, so we decided to put it on the record." (thanks, Tim - Pittsburgh, PA)

    Dreamin' of You Lyrics

Dreaming of your face, you’re all mine
Keep sending through the space and time
I have so much faith, it’s our time
There’s so much out there to embrace

You can never turn away when you fly so high
But you might as well stay, there’s no limit to the sky
And you’re always telling me you’re not afraid of change
Now it’s our time to shine, it’s our time

    Dreaming of you
    Dreaming of you
    Dreaming of you
    Dreaming of you

Dreaming of our place, it’s sublime
It pulls you in and fills your eyes
What else can I say with our minds?
    There’s nothing we cannot create

When the feeling’s gone and you can’t go on
Just remember one thing, that won’t last long
Believe in yourself and stand up tall
It’s our time to shine, it’s our time

    Dreaming of you
    Dreaming of you
    Dreaming of you
    Dreaming of you

You can never turn away when you fly so high
And you might as well stay, there’s no limit to the sky
Believe in yourself and stand up tall
It’s our time to shine, it’s our time

    Dreaming of you
    Dreaming of you
    Dreaming of you
    Dreaming of you

    Dreamin' of You
  • The Shan Dan directed video centers on a young couple enjoying a day at a California beach while Buckcherry perform the song as the sun sets over the ocean behind them. Frontman Josh Todd told Loudwire that he felt at home in the setting. "I grew up in Orange County, California., and before I got into music, when I was super young, I would surf every day and I wanted to be a pro surfer," he said. "So I spent a lot of time at the ocean, sitting on the beach thinking and I had a lot of things in my head that came from just sitting and looking out at the ocean."

"It's always been something very peaceful for me and that's what I wanted to capture in the song," Todd added. "I just felt like it fit the song. So to go down there and have a nice time and sit by the campfire and sing a song, that's what 'Dreamin' kind of feels like to me. So that's why we did it. It was something really simple and cool."
