Morning Falling

David Crosby wrote this song, which is about drones killing innocent people, with his son James Raymond. They wrote more than half the tracks on Croz together and Crosby told Mojo magazine: "Right from the very first song we wrote together, it's been very good and easy. He seems to know where I'm going and I seem to know where he's going, I don't really even know how to describe it, but I know that I write better with him than with anybody else. That's a fairly difficult chemistry and doesn't happen fairly easily, but when it does it opens the door to another level and some of the best music I made."

Pianist James Raymond was born in 1962 and placed by David Crosby for adoption. He was reunited with his father as an adult and in 1997 Raymond began performing with him as a member of Crosby, Pevar & Raymond. After the disbandment of CPR in 2004, Raymond continued to work with his dad as well as part of the touring bands for Crosby & Nash and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

The entire song consists of sarcastic lyrics that act as a commentary of America and how it rules all other countries. "When we dance I want to lead" (translated) shows how America commands others to do the same as them.

The video goes along with the song lyrics and shows people from countries across the world, including Africa, India and the Antarctic, all interacting with American-made products. A boy takes off his Nike sneakers to pray, an Indian family crouch on the grass to watch TV and eat pizza. The most notable reference is the band themselves performing in space-suits and attempting to prop an American flag up on a set made up to resemble the moon. Part of the song is about how America does not care about things and they just pay people to make them happy. She Looks So Perfect

5 Seconds of Summer is a pop-rock band from from the western suburbs of Sydney, Australia, comprising vocalist Luke Hemmings, guitarist Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood and drummer Ashton Irwin. The group was formed in December 2011 when schoolmates Luke, Michael and Calum started posting videos of themselves performing covers of popular songs to YouTube. They were soon joined by Ashton and quickly gained a large following on Twitter and Facebook.

The quartet spent the second half of 2012 writing and developing before releasing their Somewhere New EP at the end of the year, reaching the Top 40 of the New Zealand album chart. One Direction had been following 5 Seconds of Summer's career for some time and the Australian quartet spent much of 2013 supporting the guys on their worldwide Take Me Home tour.

This is 5 Seconds Of Summer's debut worldwide single, after signing to to Capitol Records. The tune topped 38 iTunes charts across the globe with the pre-order, making it a contender for "song of the summer."

The instant success thrust the band into the spotlight and onto the Tumblrs of their (mostly) female fans. With the exception of their drummer Ashton Irwin, who was 20, every member of the group was a teenager when the song hit. They fought the "boy band" label from the start, explaining that they wrote their own songs, with every member contributing to the process. The credited writers on this track are Irwin, the band's guitarist Michael Clifford and Jake Sinclair, who also produced the track and contributed guitar and backing vocals.

So why 5 Seconds Of Summer? Michael told Digital Spy : "I suggested the name and everyone hated it! I wanted to make a name where everyone could put their name into it, and it has a cool abbreviation."

"There's nothing symbolic about it unfortunately," he added. "Normally we tell people we fought with dragons and stuff. We'll come up with a cool story and get back to you."

The music video was directed by Frank Borin and gained over 1 million views within 24 hours of its release on February 24, 2014. Asked by Coup de Main magazine about the inspiration for the clip, Michael replied: "I guess we were just looking around for ideas for the video stuff, and the director Frank came to us with this idea of the song just making people want to take their clothes off or something? And we were like… Alright, that's amazing!"

The band wrote this song with Jake Sinclair, who also produced that track and added guitar and backing vocals. It was Sinclair who came up with the memorable lyric: "She looks so perfect standing there in my American Apparel underwear."

That line was inspired by a time when Sinclair's girlfriend forgot her underwear, so she wore his. He warned the band that he had a weird concept before pitching them the line, which didn't go over well with Michael Clifford, but Ashton Irwin loved it and pushed it through. "I loved it because it was quirky," Irwin told Rolling Stone. "I knew it was gonna break us."

After this song hit, American Apparel saw a 10 percent spike in sales of their briefs.

The song's lyrics are exceptionally goofy, but insanely catchy and somewhat nostalgic. The line, "I made a mixtape straight out of '94, I've got your ripped skinny jeans lying on the floor" proved especially popular, with the band playing it up by wearing skinny jeans in the video and often making appearances under a "Mixtape '94" sign. The band claims inspiration from '90s acts like blink-182 and Green Day.

5 Seconds of Summer were the first multi-member Australian group to top the UK singles chart since Madison Avenue spent a week at #1 with "Don't Call Me Baby" in May 2000.

Band member Gary Kemp started writing this song as a spoof of James Bond theme songs, specifically Goldfinger .

Gary Kemp recalled the writing of this song to The Mail on Sunday March 13, 2011: "I used to get my brother Martin to come in when I was writing songs to give an opinion, muck about on his bass to see if I was going in the right direction. He loved 'Gold' from the start so I knew that I was on to something.

There's no formula to writing a song like that, but the title is key, there's no point writing a great melody and not knowing what the title is. It's so hard to put the title over a melody you've found – it's better to think: I have a great title, a great opening line, how do I make that into a song?"

The band was made up of Tony Hadley (vocals), Gary Kemp (guitar), his brother Martin Kemp (bass), Steve Norman (guitar), and John Keeble (drums). Both Kemp brothers appeared in the film The Krays in 1990. Martin Kemp later acted in the BBC soap opera East Enders as Steve Owen.In 1998 Hadley, Norman and Keeble sued Gary Kemp, the chief songwriter, for a greater share of the royalties, but lost the case.

This bouncy hip-pop song finds Azalea letting the world know why she's the hottest female rapper in the game over a stripped back production driven by a retro-induced synth.

The song was premiered on Mistajam's BBC Radio 1Xtra show on February 6, 2014 and released as the fourth single from The New Classic exactly two months later.

Charli XCX joins in with the bragging on the rowdy hook. This was the second breakout hit for the British singer following her contribution to Icona Pop's, "I Love It." "It's been massively different for me, on a personal level and on a Charli XCX level," Charli told Billboard magazine. "With 'I Love It,' there was never a plan for me to go and write for Icona Pop - they were just there, and it happened, and no one really knew what was going on."

"Then it was a bit of a mess that turned into a stressful experience, and something that I didn't really enjoy," she continued. "They were traveling the world and it was great, but I never felt part of that process, partly due to the nature of the song and how it sounds. I never really felt like it was my song."

"With Iggy, it's been the flip side of that," Charli added. "From the start, Iggy has been like, 'This is your song as well as my song,' which I think is very nice of her, and it made me very excited about the song. I feel valued."

This was produced by The Invisible Men (Katy B, Ellie Goulding) with whom Azalea collaborated with on the entire album. Anthony Kilhoffer (Kanye West, Beyoncé) was enlisted to provide the final mix.

The song's music video was directed by Director X (Ciara's "Body Party," Drake's "Started from the Bottom"). The clip pays homage to the classic 1995 film Clueless with Iggy playing Cher and Charli portraying Tai. It was filmed at some of the same locations used in the movie.

The song was Iggy Azalea's first single to reach the Hot 100. The previous female rapper who sent a debut Hot 100 hit into the top 10 was M.I.A., who ascended to #4 with "Paper Planes" in 2008.

When this climbed to #1 on the Hot 100, Azalea's collaboration with Ariana Grande, "Problem," also jumped to #2 on the tally. The Australian rapper became the first act since the Beatles to simultaneously occupy the top two spots with their first Hot 100 hits.

Azalea was the fourth solo female rapper in Billboard's Hot 100 history to have a #1 hit. The previous three were Lauryn Hill who topped the chart with "Doo Wop (That Thing)" in 1998, Lil Kim who hooked up with Christina Aguilera, Mya and Pink on "Lady Marmalade" in 2001 and Shawnna, who reached the summit of the Hot 100 two years later with Ludacris on "Stand Up."

This was originally an unfinished song by Azalea titled "Leave It," which was leaked online on December 5, 2013. The Invisible Men then approached Charli XCX about adding a killer pop hook and Azalea's key line "'Who dat who dat. I-G-G-Y,'" immediately leapt out at her. "I was so into it. I wanted to make it into, like, a 2014 girl power moment," XCX told Billboard magazine. "There aren't enough high-profile female collaborations happening."

Azalea admitted to The Observer that she has "no idea" how her hook-up with Charli XCX came about. "I have no idea how she got on it," she said. "They decided it would be a good idea and I found out later. I thought, she sounds good, let's keep her!"

"Weird Al" Yankovic transformed this song into the anthem of a cocky Mr. Fix-it in "Handy" from his 2014 album, Mandatory Fun.

MTV named this as their best song of 2014. Crazy In Love

The horns were sampled from the 1970 Chi-lites song "Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)."

Jay-Z did the rap. He and Beyoncé were dating, which made it convenient for him to make many guest appearances performing his rap. The song was their first collaboration, and when Beyonce married the 12 years older Jay-Z on April 4, 2008, the couple shared their first dance to "Crazy in Love." The two met in 2002 while working on an album together.

Grammy-winning producer Rich Harrison played all the instruments on this song, including the sequencers and the congas. He even took care of all the samples. Harrison had treasured the Chi-lites sample long before he met Beyoncé. He knew he could do something special with it, and was reluctant to leak it to the wrong artist. He explained to MTV News: "I hadn't really shopped it much, because sometimes you don't want to come out of the bag before it's right. People don't really get it and you'll leave them with a foul taste in their mouth. So it was just something that I held on to until I got the call from B."
When Harrison first played the beat to Beyoncé, the Texan singer initially had doubts as it seemed too retro, no one used horn riffs in the 21st century. However she came round to the idea and gave the songwriter two hours to pen the song, whilst she disappeared for a break. 120 minutes later, Harrison had written the verses and the hook, leaving the bridge for Beyoncé.

This was the only song to top the charts in both the UK and US in 2003.

This won the 2003 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song. Beyoncé herself choreographed many of the video's dance moves. The orange and pink Versace dress she wears in the video has been immortalized in her Madame Tussaud's waxwork. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for all above)

On MTV's Making Of The Video, Beyoncé said, "It celebrates the evolution of a woman. It talks about a girl who is at the point of a relationship. Beyoncé told the writer Dennis Hensley about this tune. She explained: "The song talks about how, when you're falling in love, you do things that are out of character and you don't really care because you're just open. The song came from me actually looking crazy one day in the studio." Beyoncé added: "I said, 'I'm lookin' crazy right now,' and Rich Harrison, the producer, was like, 'That's the song!'"

In a poll by UK's NME, this was voted as the best single of the Noughties.

Jay-Z's contribution was a last minute addition - Beyoncé asked him to get on the song the night before she had to turn her album in.

Beyoncé started her halftime show at the Super Bowl in 2013 with this song. She was later joined by her groupmates from Destiny's Child, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.

A slowed-down, sensual string-filled version of the tune was used in the trailer for the 2014 Fifty Shades Of Grey movie and also features on its soundtrack. It was produced by Boots with violin arrangements by Margot, both of whom worked on Beyoncé's 2013 self-titled album.

Margot admitted to Time that neither she nor Boots had actually read the book. "It's funny, when it comes to scoring films and making music, it's more about the mood that you're capturing anyway," she said. "We didn't necessarily need to know the storyline to make something dramatic and sensual."

This song of devotion about her man finds Allen warning other women: "Look at my ring. You can't have him." The gleeful, giddy track featured in series 3 of The HBO series Girls.

Allen told Rolling Stone that placing the song in the show made perfect sense to her. "I think the show is brilliant, so it was more or less a no brainer for me," she said. "Greg Kurstin, who produced and co-wrote this track with me, played a few of the new tracks for a friend of his who works on the show. Apparently [music supervisor Manish Raval] loved the songs, and later came back to Greg asking if he could include one of the tracks in an episode."

The song was inspired by Lily Allen's husband Sam Cooper's performance in bed. The singer laughed to The Sun: "He was embarrassed, but I think people know me for being candid about everything. So I can't just suddenly get married and not talk about those things any more, because I think my fans would be like, 'Er, why doesn't she talk about sex?'"

"Sam was there when I was recording that track as I did it in the house," Allen continued. "He kept walking in saying, 'This is gross.' I said sorry but he knew what he was getting into when he got with me."

This was written by the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It was offered to Dionne Warwick and Gene Pitney, who both passed on it. In our 2012 interview with Jackie DeShannon , she explained: "When Hal suggested that Burt play 'What the World Needs Now' Burt was not that enthused about showing it to me at that moment. So we went on, played some more songs, and tried to decide on the four sides that we would record for the session. At that point Hal again suggested that Burt play 'What the World Needs Now.' And reluctantly, I think, he played it for me. Of course it was love at first hearing and first sight at those gorgeous words and fantastic melody. There were cornfields and wheat fields in my back yard where I grew up in Kentucky on a farm, and I heard a little bit of a gospel feel in the chorus. I thought it was a match made in heaven. The minute Burt heard me singing it, he said, 'Off to New York! We're off to New York!' That's where we recorded the song."

Released two years before the Summer Of Love, this was an early pacifist anthem about the importance of love in the world. The Beatles had a very similar theme on their 1967 song "All You Need Is Love."

Jackie DeShannon wrote several hit songs, including The Searchers "When You Walk in the Room" and Brenda Lee's "Dum Dum." The song "Bette Davis Eyes," which became a huge hit for Kim Carnes, appeared on her 1975 album New Arrangement.

Burt Bacharach (from Record Collector magazine): "Dionne (Warwick) rejected that song. She might have thought it was too preachy and I thought Dionne was probably right. Hal pushed me to play it for Jackie De Shannon who we were gonna record. Otherwise I would have let it be and it would still be in the drawer. Once I heard Jackie sing four bars of it, I thought 'this is great.' Jackie had such a great voice. Love her voice. Whether it's a song she wrote herself or singing 'What The World Needs Now Is Love,' she's special. I wish we could have repeated that success with Jackie but the material we gave her on the next session wasn't as good."

Lyricist Hal David discussed this track in the book Chicken Soup For the Soul: The Story Behind The Song: "I was living in Roslyn, New York, on the north shore of Long Island, which is where my children were raised. I would drive into Manhattan every day to meet Burt (Bacharach) at the Brill Building in Famous Music's offices on the sixth floor, where we did our writing. Mine was a rock and roll house where each of my kids had a band that practiced there. It was hard for me to find somewhere quiet to work so I would drive into town slowly, which would give me the opportunity to think and get ideas. I would write in my head during the ride.
One day, I thought of the first two lines of this song:

Before I got to Manhattan I had the rest of the chorus set the way it is today. Then I needed the verse section. When I began to write the first verse, everything I thought about just seemed off: We don't need a plane to fly faster, we don't need a submarine to go deeper. I tried and tried, showed it to Burt, then put it away and went on to something else.
In a month or two or three, I tried again. It was always the same thing. I needed something to compare it to and everything I thought about had nothing to do with the person I was talking to – God. It took more time to write these lyrics than any other. I realized that I needed to write the antithesis – what we didn't need. One day on the ride to New York, it came to me.

I knew that was it. I wrote about all of the things that had to do with nature and what God gives us. I gave the lyrics to Burt and he wrote a fabulous melody.
There were three ways Burt and I wrote together. He'd have melody ideas; I'd have lyric ideas. We'd show each other what we had, pick out what we both liked and work on it together. Sometimes we'd be writing three songs at once. Sometimes I'd take the melody home and write lyrics to it, sometimes Burt would take the lyrics home and write the melody to them.
We showed the song to Dionne Warwick, who had recorded many of our songs, and it is the only song of ours that she ever turned down. We put it aside and then received a call from Liberty Records to meet with Jackie DeShannon. We played this song for her and she wanted to do it. Burt did a great arrangement and we recorded it."

Dionne Warwick evidently changed her mind, as she did later record the song for her 1966 album Here Where There Is Love.

The Catholic Church helped get this banned on many radio stations, which only made people want to hear it more (You'd think they'd have learned after banning Gary U.S. Bonds' "Quarter To Three"). It's mild by today's standards, but a hot topic back when you didn't sing about "Makin' love in the storm" with a teenage girl. (thanks, Uncle - Philly, PA)

Christie (in Goldmine magazine): "I had priests and nuns calling to complain. Even Time magazine did an article on it, saying I was corrupting the youth."

The music was based on Tchaikovsky's "Romeo And Juliet."
