Cherish Lyrics

Let's take a walk together near the ocean shore
Hand in hand you and I
Let's Cherish every moment we have been given
The time is passing by
I often pray before I lay down by your side
If you receive your calling before I awake
Could I make it through the night

Cherish the love we have
We should cherish the life we live
Cherish the love
Cherish the life
Cherish the love
Cherish the love we have
For as long as we both shall live
Cherish the love
Cherish the life
Cherish the love

The world is always changing
Nothing stays the same
But love will stand the test of time
The next life that we live in
Remains to be seen
Will you be by my side
I often pray before I lay down by your side
If you receive your calling before I awake
Could I make it through the night

Cherish the love we have
We should cherish the life we live
Cherish the love
Cherish the life
Cherish the love
Cherish the love we have
For as long as we both shall live
Cherish the love
Cherish the life
Cherish the love

Cherish the love
Cherish the life

Cherish the love we have
We should cherish the life we live
Cherish the love
Cherish the life
Cherish the love
Cherish the love we have
For as long as we both shall live
Cherish the love
Cherish the life
Cherish the love

Cherish the love we have
We should cherish the life we live
Cherish the love
Cherish the life
Cherish the love
Cherish the love we have
For as long as we both shall live
Cherish the love
Cherish the life
Cherish the love

Cherish
  • While recording their Emergency album, the band decided to record in the Bahamas at Compass Point Studios in Nassau. While working along the beach, lead singer James "JT" Taylor watched the band members' children happily at play and thought to himself, "How blessed we are. God has been good to us and we should cherish it."

Taylor submitted the idea to the band's bass player Robert "Kool" Bell, who ran with it.
  • This song had special meaning for Bell, who found out his father was listening to the song when he died in October 1985.
  • This was featured in the 2009 comedy 17 Again, starring Zac Efron and Matthew Perry.
  • Ronald Bell, the band's saxophonist and music director, started collecting lots of new music equipment at the time, including a piece included on this track: a drum machine.
  • Ronald furnished the track and gave it to Taylor to write the lyrics, who said it was the first time he'd ever written a song in one sitting without any changes. Producer Jim Bonnefond did want to overhaul the song with new lyrics, though, and even brought in songwriter Sandy Linzer for the task. But Linzer wasn't having it. "They used maybe a couple of lines in the chorus that I gave them gratis, but I thought the song was perfect," he told Billboard.

    Living in a Box Lyrics

    Woke up this mornin'
    Closed in on both sides
    Nothin' doin'
    I feel resistance

    As I open my eyes
    Someone's foolin'
I found a way to break through this cellophane bag
'Cause I know what's goin' on
    In your mind

    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box
    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box
    I'm a livin' in a box

    Life goes in circles
    Around and around
    Circulating
    I sometimes wonder

    What's movin' underground
    I'm escaping
I found a way to break through this cellophane bag
'Cause I know what's goin' on
    In my mind

    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box
    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box
    I'm a livin' in a box

    Livin'
    Ahh ha
I found a way to break through this cellophane bag
'Cause I know what's goin' on
    In your mind

    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box
    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box
    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box

    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box
    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box
    I'm a livin' in a box
    I'm a livin' in a cardboard box

    I'm a livin' I'm a livin'....I'm a livin'
    I'm a livin', I'm a livin'....I'm a livin'

    Living in a Box
  • Living in a Box were a British band who formed in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1985. They comprised singer Richard Darbyshire, drummer Anthony (Titch) Critchlow and keyboard player Marcus Vere.

They are best known for their eponymous debut single, which was a hit in the US and UK. The band named themselves after the song, which Critchlow and Vere had already been working on before Darbyshire joined the group.
  • Though it was their only single to chart in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, Living In A Box enjoyed more success in their home country, achieving four more Top 40 hits, including the #5 peaking "Room In Your Heart." Artistic differences caused the band to break up in 1990 after the release of two albums. Darbyshire went on to become a successful songwriter, penning tunes for the likes of Lisa Stansfield, Level 42 and Jennifer Rush.
  • The song was used in a Vodafone TV commercial during the second half of 2013.
  • Bobby Womack covered this song. His version reached #70 in the UK in 1987 and was also a minor US hit. (thanks, Guy - New York, NY)

    Tapioca Tundra Lyrics

Reasoned verse some prose or rhyme
    Lose themselves in other times
And waiting hopes cast silent spells
    That speak in clouded clues
It cannot be a part of me
For now it's part of you
Sunshine, rag time, blowing in the breeze

Midnight looks right standing more at ease
    Silhouettes and figures stay
Close to what he had to say
And one more time the faded dream
    Is saddened by the news
It cannot be a part of me
For not it's a part of you

    Tapioca Tundra
  • Mike Nesmith wrote this song inspired by a large collection of old 45 records from the '20s and '30s he purchased at a yard sale. Along with "Magnolia Simms," this was a tribute to the ragtime and jazz of the '20s, even going so far as recording using gramophone technology to mimic the echo and the skipping of an old recording. It was also the basis for Nesmith's first major solo project in 1968, The Wichita Train Whistle Sings. (thanks, Brian - Providence, RI)
  • The title is not mentioned in the lyrics. Mike Nesmith had a habit of doing this a lot on his compositions ("Papa Gene's Blues," "Auntie's Municipal Court," "Daily Nightly," etc.). (thanks, Barry Kesten - Bellmore, United States)

Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us Lyrics

    Out in the street
You don't survive by being weak
    This is our time
Walls were made for us to climb
Don't you try to lock us out
Cause were breaking down the doors
And ohhhh...we just came to fight
    Yeah yeah

    There's no stopping us
    No one does it better
    There's no stopping us
    Red light doesn't matter
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

    Long overdue
No playing games or being used
    Something to prove
It's more than just a dream come true
We have waited far too long
    For this moment to arrive

    [Chorus]
We have waited far too long
    For this moment to arrive

    [Chorus]

    Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us
  • Ollie & Jerry was a Californian Dance-Pop duo consisting of drummer Ollie E. Brown and R&B singer Jerry Knight. The pair had previously worked together in the R&B group Raydio – Knight was a founding member singing vocals on their 1977 hit, "Jack and Jill," whilst Brown was a session drummer on all of Raydio's albums.
  • This was recorded as the title theme to the 1984 breakdance-themed movie Breakin', and released as the first single from the film's soundtrack album. The single became a hit reaching the Top Ten in both the US and UK.
  • Jean-Claude Van Damme was an uncredited background dancing spectator in the movie and he can be seen at one point during the music video.
  • Ollie & Jerry's follow-up single "Electric Boogaloo," was only a minor hit peaking at #57 in the UK and reaching the Top 50 of the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Dance Club Play charts. The duo split after the song's release in mid-1985.

Only The Good Die Young Lyrics

Come out Virginia, don't let 'em wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
Aw but sooner or later it comes down to faith
Oh I might as well be the one

Well, they showed you a statue, told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
Aw, but they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done
    Only The Good Die Young
    That's what I said
    Only the good die young
    Only the good die young

You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
Aw but that never hurt no one

So come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal and I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
    Never let's in the sun
Darlin' only the good die young
    Woah
    I tell ya
    Only the good die young
    Only the good die young

You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
Mmm, and a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information
    You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary
    (Oh woah woah)

They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun

You know that only the good die young
    I tell ya
    Only the good die young
    Only the good die young

Well your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
Aw she never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me? oh woah woah

Come out come out come out Virginia don't let 'em wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
Oh sooner or later it comes down to faith
Oh I might as well be the one
You know that only the good die young

    I'm telling you baby
You know that only the good die young
    Only the good die young
    Only the good
    Only the good die young

    Only The Good Die Young
  • Virginia was Virginia Callaghan, a girl Billy had a crush on when he first started playing in a band. She didn't even know he existed until she saw him in a gig, but thirteen years later he used her as the main character in this song about a Catholic girl who won't have premarital sex.
  • Many musicians join bands to meet girls, but few overachieve the way Joel did, dating models and even marrying one of them (Christie Brinkley). Virginia Callaghan was the first of these girls that thought differently of Joel when she saw him perform. Billy explained to Uncut in 1998: "I originally started in bands just to meet girls – it was round the time The Beatles first hit America – but I didn't know you could actually make a living out of it. My first gig was in a church, about '64 – we did Beatles songs, and this girl I had a crush on, Virginia Callaghan, who normally wouldn't look twice at me, just stared at me through the whole gig. And I thought, 'This is so cool!' And then all these other girls were lookin' at me as well. Then, at the end of the night, the priest comes up and gives us like 15 dollars apiece, which in '64 was a fortune! Girls and money! Man, I was hooked."
  • This song was originally recorded with a Reggae groove, which can be heard on some bootlegs that were inadvertently leaked via drummer Liberty DeVito's camp. DeVito didn't like the Reggae beat, which is why Joel changed it. (thanks, Barry Kesten - Bellmore, United States)
  • This didn't do very well until church officials around the US heard it and condemned the song. The controversy was great publicity and sent the song up the charts. Joel recalled to the Metro newspaper July 6, 2006 about the controversy stirred up by this number: "That song was released as a single back in 1977, I think. It was not really doing very well, just languishing in the charts. Then it was banned by a radio station in New Jersey at a Catholic university. The minute the kids found out it was banned, they ran out in droves and it became a huge hit. If you tell kids they can't have something, that's what they want. I don't understand the problem with the song. It's about a guy trying to seduce a girl but, at the end of the song, she's still chaste and pure and he hasn't got anything. So I never understood what the furor was about. But I did write a letter to the archdiocese who'd banned it, asking them to ban my next record."
  • Joel told USA Today July 9, 2008: "Jewish guilt is visceral it's in the stomach. Catholic guilt is in the belfry of the cerebrum, it's gothic and its got incense, bells tolling, and it has all to do with sin. I wanted to write a song about it, about a guy trying to seduce a Catholic girl. I don't know what all the fuss was about, because she stayed chaste. I remember taking it over to the drummer, Liberty (DeVitto). 'Well, it's true,' he said, 'but I don't know how people are going to respond to it!"
  • Melissa Etheridge did a particularly prurient version of this song at a 2014 Billy Joel town hall event hosted by Howard Stern. Etheridge explained that she grew up playing Joel's songs in piano bars and cover bands, but she never had the chance to perform this one, which was one of her favorites. She explained: "It was the end of the '70s, and a girl could not sing this song. But of all of his songs, this one really resonated with me. When I was a senior in high school, it hit really close to home. The song is about pure lust. It's the physical, carnal pleasure: let's do it."

    Woo!

Hear the plane humming back on the run
One I would sleep between 'em better than none
Promoter tried to rob 'em we said "Go 'head son!"
Because we're both too sleepy to get the gun

Pretzelbodylogic yeah, it's so much fun!

    Tastes a bitter sweet undone
Now we both too sleepy to get the gun

    Bank's on a holiday, credit's overrun
Somebody else's problem to tie for another one
Pull these shades one me black out the Sun
I need a little more rest, then we'll do what needs to be done!

Pretzelbodylogic yeah, it's so much fun!
Dreaming of each other on each other's tongue
    Tastes a bitter sweet undone
Now we both too sleepy to get the gun

    Woo!

Limo on tarmack ready to ride
    Cutie-Pie driver said "Get inside!"
Another limousine about to get alone
Put your seat back now, it's one (One!) two (Two!)
Three for the road! (Three for the road!)

Pretzelbodylogic yeah, it's so much fun!
Dreaming of each other on each other's tongue

  • This upbeat Funk-Rock jam is a song from Prince's Plectrum Electum album, which he performs with his 3rdEyeGirl band. The group is made up of guitarist Donna Grantis, bassist Ida Neilsen and drummer Hannah Ford Welton. Nielsen told the crowd at a listening party that Plectrum Electum was, "completely recorded live, analog, old-school. We were influenced by Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, people that recorded analog. People aren't recording analog anymore. It's manufactured, overproduced music."
  • The Minneapolis singer debuted the song in the post-Super Bowl "Prince" episode of New Girl, which also featured the superstar dishing out relationship advice to the show's stars Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson). "He contacted us last season because he's a huge fan," the show's producer Brett Baer told MTV News. "He knows everything about the show. He contacted Zooey and Hannah [Simone] directly and asked to do the show. We couldn't work it out last year. But when the Super Bowl thing was floated, it was perfect timing."

    Clap for the Wolfman
You gonna dig him 'til the day you die

    Clap for the Wolfman
He gonna rate your record high (hmm, yes gracious)
    Clap for the Wolfman
You gonna dig him 'til the day you die

Do Ron Ron and the Duke of Earl
    They were friend's of mine
The highway's on my moonlight drive
Snuggled in, said baby, just one kiss
    She said no, no, no
    Romance ain't keepin' me alive
I said hey babe, do you want to coo, coo, coo
    She said uh, uh, uh
So I was left out in the cold
I said you're what I've been dreamin' of
She said I don't want to know
Oh you know, she was diggin' the cat on the radio

    Clap for the Wolfman
He gonna rate your record high
Yes baby, I your doctor in love
    Clap for the Wolfman
You gonna dig him til the day you die
Everybody talkin' about the Wolfman's confidence of love

Seventy five, eighty miles an hour
    She hollers slow, slow, slow
Baby I can stop right on a dime
I said hey baby, give me just one kiss
    She said no, no, no
But how was I to bide my time
I said hey baby, do you want to coo, coo, coo
    She said uh, uh, uh
    Said I'm about to overload
I said you're what I've been livin' for
She said I don't want to know
Oh, you thought she was digging you but she was digging me

    Clap for the Wolfman
He gonna rate your record high
As long as you got the curves baby, I got the angles
    Clap for the Wolfman
You gonna dig him 'til the day you die
It's all according to how your boogaloo situation stands, you understand

    Clap for the Wolfman
He gonna rate your record high
You ain't gonna get 'em, 'cause I got 'em
    Clap for the Wolfman
You gonna dig him 'til the day you die
You might want to try, but I'm gonna keep 'em

    Clap For The Wolfman
  • Burton Cummings explained that the song began as a jam and was originally called "Clap For Napoleon." As they were appearing on NBC's Midnight Special a few times in 1973 (they hosted the show in '74), they changed the lyric as a tribute to the show's host, the late Wolfman Jack (real name: Robert Smith). Wolfman Jack even did a couple of live dates with the group, adding his trademark "vocal" rap, which was usually done live by Cummings. The Wolfman legend began in the 1960's when the DJ manned an unregulated Mexican radio station with the capacity to transmit 250,000 watts of power. His husky voice howled across the United States after the midnight hour and inspired artists like Todd Rundgren ("Wolfman Jack") and the Grateful Dead ("Ramble on Rose"). (thanks, Barry Kesten - Bellmore, NY)
  • "Clap for the Wolfman" is featured on the band's 1974 album, Road Food. The song reached #4 on the charts in Canada and #6 in the US. It couldn't have come at a better time: A few years earlier, guitarist Randy Bachman left the band, leaving a trail of insults in his wake and striking what seemed like a lasting blow to the band's popularity. By the time the band was revived with the success of "Clap for the Wolfman" and "Star Baby," Burton Cummings still hadn't cooled off. According to an interview with Creem in 1975, he told a fan, "I hate the guy. He was down on the rest of us 'cause he thought we were blowing it with dope and all this ridiculous s--t. He was like some kind of Mormon or something."

Apparently, guitarists for the Guess Who have a short shelf life. Not long after Road Food was recorded, Kurt Winter and Don McDougal got their walking papers. "They were drunks. We got tired of babysitting them," Cummings said.
  • In his autobiography Have Mercy!: Confessions of the Original Rock 'n Roll Animal, Wolfman Jack singles out Burton Cummings for adding his name to the song and taking him on tour to promote it. According to the Toronto Sun, the Wolfman quit his job at WNBC (where he enjoyed "$350,000 - plus a secretary, a chauffeured limousine, a bodyguard, and a well-ventilated private room at Rockefeller Center for the smoking of dope in") to go on tour with The Guess Who.

Nigga you ain't said nothing but a word
    Smoke something for ya nerve
Home of the paid on the first
Then nigga going broke by the third
    Bounce for the crown
Fast forward getting real tell me now
Every dog need a cat to meow
    Every once in a while
I see hands in the crowds
See whites, blacks blazing a pound, ju-jumping around
Tits, ass bump out her gown
    B-b-b-bounce from the ground
    High for the sound
This verse straight from the morgue
Pop, pop, pop down from the floor
    Bounce

    Uh, (uh)
    A-huh, (a-huh)
    Bounce, bounce, bounce

    Bruh I see, girls everywhere
Titties, ass, hands in the air
    It’s a party over here
Shake it for the man of the year
    Uh ma-man of the year
    Ma-man of the bounce

    Bruh I see, girls everywhere
Titties, ass, hands in the air
    It’s a party over here
Shake it for the man of the year
    Uh ma-man of the year
    Ma-man of the bounce

    Bruh I see, girls everywhere
Titties, ass, hands in the air
    It’s a party over here
Shake it for the man of the year
    Uh ma-man of the year
    Ma-man of the bounce

    Uh, (uh)
    A-huh, (a-huh)
    Bounce, bounce, bounce

    Uh, (uh)
    A-huh, (a-huh)
    Bounce, bounce, bounce

    Uh, (uh)
    A-huh, (a-huh)
    Bounce, bounce, bounce

    Man of the Year
  • The beat for this Oxymoron cut was supplied by Nez & Rio. The American production duo previously contributed production for a couple of tracks on Schoolboy Q's 2012 album Habits & Contradictions.
  • Nez & Rio's beat is based around American electronic band Chromatics' tune "Cherry" from the 2013 compilation album After Dark 2. The production pair didn't layer much else onto the instrumentation, just adding some banging drums.
  • The song's hook was first heard when it appeared as a teaser at the end of Kendrick Lamar's music video for "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe." The full clean version was then featured on the soundtrack to the 2013 video game NBA Live 14.
  • Schoolboy Q made his network television debut performing this song on the January 24, 2014 episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

    Every Little Thing Lyrics

    When I'm walking beside her
    People tell me I'm lucky.
    Yes, I know I'm a lucky guy.
    I remember the first time
    I was lonely without her.
Can't stop thinking about her now.

    Every Little Thing she does,
    She does for me, yeah.
And you know the things she does,
    She does for me, oooh.
When I'm with her I'm happy
Just to know that she loves me.
Yes, I know that she loves me now.

There is one thing I'm sure of,
    I will love her forever.
For I know love will never die.

    Every little thing she does,
    She does for me, yeah.
And you know the things she does,
    She does for me, ooh.
    Every little thing she does,
    She does for me, yeah.

And you know the things she does,
    She does for me, ooh.
    Every little thing.
    Every little thing.
    Every little

    Every Little Thing
  • Many sources say that John Lennon played the 12-string Rickenbacker opening signature lick, as well as the solo, since George Harrison showed up at Studio Two a couple of hours after the initial tracking was recorded. Some believe John "borrowed" George's guitar, which was already set up in Studio Two, while others claim it was George on the electric 12-string. (thanks, Barry Kesten - Bellmore, United States)
  • In a departure from their standard instrumentation, a timpani (kettle drum) is used on the refrains. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • This was intended to be a single, but ended up just an album cut.

    Hard To Love You
  • This is a track from Stephen Dale Petit's Cracking The Code album, which was released on his own 333 records, and produced by Vance Powell (Willie Nelson, Jack White). Patti Boyd (the inspiration for the song "Layla") photographed the sleeve; the shoot took place in Waterlow Park, Highgate, London.
  • This song is about Eric Clapton. Petit explained to Mojo magazine: "He's a friend, but he is famous for blowing hot and cold."

    Country Feedback
  • If you listen closely to the lyrics at the end: "It's crazy what you could've had," it can sound like "It's crazy what you couldn't have." (Apparently Michael Stipe sometimes simply makes up or distorts lyrics, which he does to great effect here). The feeling of these final lyrics gives some indication of the sense of desolation that pervades this song in almost every lyric and chord. It's about repetition in life and love, about failed relationships: "We've been through fake breakdown, self hurt, self help." It's on a continuous "maddening" loop, "feedback," and no matter how much you analyze a bad relationship with the aim to improving things, you just repeat the same things endlessly. "Junk Garage" is imagery of something discarded and worthless. "This flower is scorched" is an image of love (flower, a traditional symbol of love) which has been sullied. There is also some sexual imagery of "Honey Pot" which is an alluring, sexual attraction but ultimately unwanted. The "Paper Weight" is holding down something flimsy, again emphasizing the lack of substance to the relationship. "Plastic" emphasizes the artificiality of the relationship. (thanks, Gus - London, England)
  • Michael Stipe told Q magazine in 1992: "It's a love song, but it's certainly from the uglier side. It's pretty much about having given up on a relationship."
  • Peter Buck recalled to the recording of this track in a 2008 Rolling Stone interview: "'Country Feedback' - I thought that was a demo. Michael (Stipe) just sang it once. It was a letter he wrote to someone but didn't send. He just sang it."
  • On R.E.M.'s 2001 Perfect Square concert DVD, Michael Stipe says, "this is my favorite song of all time." (thanks, Mike - Hamilton, ON)
  • In an interview with the August 2010 edition of Uncut magazine, Kurt Cobain widow and Hole vocalist Courtney Love claimed this is one of two songs that Stipe wrote about her. She said: "I know 'Country Feedback' and 'Crush With Eyeliner' are about me. The line from Country Feedback: 'We've been through fake-a-breakdown/ Self Hurt/Plastics, collections/ Self Help, self pain/ EST, psychics, f--k all,' Michael (Stipe) talked me through that."
  • In the liner notes for Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, Bill Berry also calls this one of his favorite R.E.M. songs, adding "I think it wonderfully peculiar that this, somewhat gloomy dirge surfaced in a body of work that also included 'Shiny Happy People.'"
  • This was featured in the 1996 romantic drama Unhook the Stars, starring Marisa Tomei and Gena Rowlands.

    Whiskey Bottle
  • Alcoholism is a recurring theme on several of the tracks on Uncle Tupelo's critically acclaimed debut album, No Depression, most notably this one. Frontman Jay Farrar told American Songwriter magazine January/February 2014: "We were seeing it in bars a lot. We started writing songs when we were about twenty years old, and then you hit twenty-one and all of a sudden you're exposed to a different world and a different culture. Bar culture. It's both a problem and a solution, and it's something our society is still trying to figure out."
