True Faith Lyrics

I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty

That's the way that we must pay
You got my time and you got my money
Now I feel you've started something
In a world that's so becoming

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun

When I was a very small boy
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see

That's the price that we must pay
Our valued destiny comes to nothing
I don't know just where we're going
I guess there's just no way of knowing

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun

I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of destiny

The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time and you took my money
Now I think you've started something
In a world that's just begun

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun

True Faith
  • Many heroin users describe a glorious detachment that comes from the drug's high, and that feeling seems to be described in this song. When we asked New Order bass player Peter Hook about the meaning, however, he denied the drug connection. Said Hook: "'True Faith' features some of the best New Order lyrics in my opinion, but no, it is not about heroin, that is not something that any of our lyrics ever touched on. I think it's clear to see though that the lyrics do reflect being under some sort of influence."

His bandmate Bernard Sumner has stated otherwise, however, telling Q magazine in 1999 that the song is about drug dependency, and that while he didn't do heroin, he wrote it from the perspective of a user.

This is far from the first time Sumner and Hook haven't seen eye-to-eye - their relationship soured when Hook left the band in 2007 and Sumner decided to continue on without him in 2011.
  • The video, which is still frequently shown in the UK today, depicts a "good vs. evil" type fight in a surreal manner, starting with two costumed people smacking each others' faces in time with the drum beat.

The clip was directed by Philippe Decouflé, a French dancer/choreographer (he also worked as a mime), who would later direct the Fine Young Cannibals video for "She Drives Me Crazy." The band was busy on tour, so their scenes were shot at a stop in Glastonbury while the rest of the footage was filmed in Paris.
  • New Order took on a grueling tour schedule at the end of 1986 that lasted about a year. During this time, they did very little recording, but they did make time to write and record "True Faith," which was released as a single in 1987 and featured as the only new song on their compilation album Substance
  • The band wrote this song with their producer, Steven Hague. It was the first time they collaborated with Hague, who joined them again to produce New Order's 1993 album Republic. Bernard Sumner recalled to Uncut: " It was a time when I set out to write a hit single. I think we got a rather large tax bill, and we sat down with Stephen Hague to write a Top 40 hit."

"I had an idea for the bassline, Gillian (Gilbert, keyboards) had some string ideas, Stephen got some drums down. When we got the track going, I was sent off to the flat we had in London with a bottle of Pernod and told not to show my face again until I'd written the lyrics."
  • According to Bernard Sumner, the lyrics were changed at the last minute to sanitize the lines "When I was a very small boy, very small boys talked to me, now that we've grown up together, they're all taking drugs with me" to "they're afraid of what they see," at the suggestion of producer Steven Hague, who felt the song had more hit potential without the drug reference. Sumner would sometimes sing this original lyric during live performances.
  • The song returned to the UK singles chart in 2011 in the form of a cover by George Michael that was recorded for the Comic Relief charity.
  • This song is playing in the club where Patrick Bateman, the main character of the 2000 movie American Psycho, played by Christian Bale, is partying with his friends at the beginning of the movie. (thanks, Rose Marie - Valencia, Spain)

    All You've Ever Wanted Lyrics

I just looked up today and
Realized how far away I am from where You are
You gave me life worth dying for but
Between the altar and the door
I bought the lies that promised more
    And here I go again

    Oh
    Oh

Lord, I know I let You down
But somehow, I will make You proud
I'll turn this sinking ship around
And make it back to You

But all my deeds and my good name
Are just dirty rags that tear and strain
To cover all my guilty stains
    That You already washed away

    'Cause All You've Ever Wanted,
    All You've ever wanted
All You've ever wanted was my heart
    Freedom's arms are open,
My chains have all been broken
Relentless love has called me from the start
And all You wanted was my heart

I was chasing healing when I'd been made well
I was fighting battles when You conquered hell
Living free but from a prison cell
Lord, I lay it down today

So I'll stop living off of how I feel
And start standing on Your truth revealed
Jesus is my strength, my shield
And He will never fail me

    'Cause all You've ever wanted,
    All You've ever wanted
All You've ever wanted was my heart
    Freedom's arms are open,
My chains have all been broken
Relentless love has called me from the start
All You wanted was my heart

    Oh
No more chains, I've been set free
    Oh
No more fighting battles You've won for me
    Oh
Now in Christ, I stand complete
    Oh

    All You've ever wanted,
    All You've ever wanted
All You've ever wanted was my heart
(All You've ever wanted was my heart)
    Freedom's arms are open,
My chains have all been broken
Relentless love has called me from the start
And all You wanted was my heart

    Oh
And all You wanted was my heart
    Oh
All You ever wanted was my heart
    Oh
And all You wanted was my heart
    Oh

    All You've Ever Wanted
  • Casting Crowns frontman Mark Hall explained that this song deals with the wayward human heart. "It's combating that logic that we have in us that says when we fail, we need to make it right," he said. "We think we need to make things right with God. We think we've got to make him proud again. Not only does it not work, it's not needed. We're fighting a battle that's already won and that's what this song is about."

    Judy's Turn To Cry Lyrics

'Cause now it's Judy's Turn To Cry
    Judy's turn to cry
    Judy's turn to cry
    'Cause Johnny's come back
    To me

Aww when Judy left with Johnny at my party (my party)
And came back wearing his ring
I sat down and cried my eyes out
Now that was a foolish thing

'Cause now it's Judy's turn to cry
    Judy's turn to cry
    Judy's turn to cry
    'Cause Johnny's come back
    To me

Well it hurt me so to see them dance together
I felt like making a scene
Then my tears just felt like rain drops
'Cause Judy's smile was so mean

But now it's Judy's turn to cry
    Judy's turn to cry
    Judy's turn to cry
    'Cause Johnny's come back
    To me

Oh one night I saw them kissing at a party
So I kissed some other guy
Johnny jumped up and he hit him
'Cause he still loved me that's why

So now it's Judy's turn to cry
    Judy's turn to cry
    Judy's turn to cry
    'Cause Johnny's come back
    To me

So now it's Judy's turn to cry

    Judy's Turn To Cry
  • This is a sequel to Gore's previous hit "It's My Party." It continues the story of the lead character who was dumped by Johnny for Judy at her party. The lead character attended another party sometime later. She noticed Johnny and Judy kissing, so she kissed another boy to make them jealous. Angered, Johnny came over and punched the boy, realizing how much he loved her. The lead character and Johnny reunited; now, Judy's left out in the cold. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)

Love You with the Truth Lyrics

For the longest time, I believed the lie
That I'm not a strong enough believer
To be the friend that can take your hand
And lead you straight to Jesus
I'm waiting on the preachers, singers, and the teachers
To string the perfect words together
But every single time I have to say goodbye
I wonder will this be the last time

I can't call myself your friend and walk away

When we love, we earn the right to speak the truth
When we speak truth, we show the world we truly love
I'm not pointing my finger, I'm holding out my hand
I lay it all on the line now to see God save my friend
Let my life and my words be the proof
I'm gonna Love You with the Truth (Oh)
Gonna love you with the truth (Oh)

Yes, God is love, but God is just
And we are separated in our darkness
So God let Him who knew no sin
To become sin to make us right with Him
It's not about religion or earning God's forgiveness
Or magic prayers or new behaviour
It's all about your heart, He'll meet you where you are
Turn from your sin and trust in Christ as Lord

Jesus is the truth, the life, the way

When we love, we earn the right to speak the truth
When we speak truth, we show the world we truly love
I'm not pointing my finger, I'm holding out my hand
I lay it all on the line now to see God save my friend
Let my life and my words be the proof
I'm gonna love you with the truth (Oh)
Gonna love you with the truth (Oh)

How I've prayed for this moment, that you would finally see
That God is more than religion, a stained-glass fantasy
And how I've prayed for the courage, for my silent faith to speak
Or that God would just send you a better friend than me

When we love, we earn the right to speak the truth
When we speak truth, we show the world we truly love
I'm not pointing my finger, I'm holding out my hand
I lay it all on the line now to see God save my friend
Let my life and my words be the proof
I'm gonna love you with the truth (Oh)

    Love You with the Truth
  • This challenge about sharing the Christian message to loved ones before it's too late was the hardest song for frontman Mark Hall to write on the Thrive album. "It's a big, upbeat rockin' song about a person realizing that they've been a really cruddy friend because they haven't shared the truth with the person closest to them," he explained. "People say, 'I want to share the gospel, but I don't want to ruin my friendship.' What you are really saying is I love my friendship more than I love my friend. It's tough, but it's truth."

    The Fragile Lyrics

    She shines
In a world full of ugliness
She matters when everything is meaningless

    Fragile
    She doesn't see her beauty
    She tries to get away
    Sometimes
It's just that nothing seems worth saving
I can't watch her slip away

I won't let you fall apart

She reads the minds of all the people as they pass her by
    Hoping someone can see
If I could fix myself I'd - but it's too late for me

I wont let you fall apart

We'll find the perfect place to go where we can run and hide
I'll build a wall and we can keep them on the other side
    ...but they keep waiting
    ...and picking...

It's something I have to do
    I was there, too
    Before everything else
    I was like you

    The Fragile
  • The album was recorded at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans, using the latest and greatest in digital technology, including ProTools editing equipment. Reznor played most of the instruments, with guest musicians dropping by every now and then. With ProTools, Trent and engineer Alan Moulder were able to record lots of stuff and then mix and match as they saw fit. To create the percussion sounds on this song, they did a lot of experimenting with drums, rigging a drum kit to trigger a synthesizer in order to create a hybrid sound. They also gathered boxes, bottles, and some glass that they put into the bass drum. These various percussion sounds were recorded and turned into a loop for the basis of the track.
  • This is one of 23 tracks on The Fragile, which tell a story known only to Reznor. An earlier track is called "The Frail," which uses elements similar to the title track. While "The Fragile" finds Reznor singing to a girl and offering to look after her ("I won't let you fall apart"), it's part of a bigger picture which Trent later explained was his way of working out his issues with addiction.

  • This gentle, reflective track comes from a personal place. "That's a thing you learn in AA," Crosby told Rolling Stone. "I went there for about fourteen and half years. You have to look at what got you there. You have to look at the mistakes, and I made some horrific ones, and then you have to learn from them, figure out how to not wind up there again. You have to set that baggage down and walk on. If you spend all your life looking over your shoulder at the things you did wrong, you're gonna walk smack into a tree."

  • Linda Perry wrote this and produced the album. Pink was a big fan of Perry's group 4 Non Blondes, and contacted her to work on the album. The success of this song caused Perry to put her solo career on hold and instead work with other female singers.
  • Pink was once arrested for disturbing her neighbors by singing out of her window at 3.30am. The song she was singing was by 4 Non Blondes, and was written by Linda Perry.
  • Perry came up with this when she was learning how to program a drum machine. It was the first dance hit she ever wrote.
  • This won the 2002 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song.
  • In the UK a cover by the veteran Welsh vocalist Shirley Bassey peaked at #47 in the singles charts. This was her 33rd British hit, her first being a version of "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)," which reached #8 in 1957. Shirley Bassey thus has recorded chart UK entries over a 50-year period, a record for a female.
  • Bassey covered this originally for a 2006 advert for the English food and clothing retailer Marks and Spencer over the Christmas period. Such was the response for her version that it became the title track of her first album release for ten years in 2007. It also enjoyed some chart success across the Atlantic entering the American Hot Dance Club Play list.

I heard this line one time 'bout tryin' to save the world
But have you ever tried to save yourself
    A wide-eyed suicide drive
    Remains a fake
    As if you'd ever
Ever go and make the same mistake
Strung out as the night comes crawlin'
Your halo of thorns is fallin'

    [Chorus]
    Blood Runs Cold
I feel it in my bones
But you don't know your time is up
    Blood runs cold

Somebody somewhere is screamin' out the words
But do they ever really ease the pain
I guess what I'm trying to say
Is whose life is it anyway because livin'
    Living is the best revenge
    You can play
    This fall from grace
    I see your face
    It's over

    [Chorus]

    From you love was kind
    Resolved left scarred and blind
Wasted and naked in the wings

    Denying twist of fate
    Demanding Heaven's gate
Lying in wait above the wind

Strung out as the night comes crawlin'
Your halo of thorns is fallin'

    Blood Runs Cold
  • This song was inspired by the passing of Def Leppard's former lead guitarist Steve Clark, who died in 1991 from a combination of alcohol and multiple prescription drugs. The band previously paid tribute to their fallen axeman on the Adrenalize track, "White Lightning," which referenced Clark's nickname as he was always running around the stage. The American band Tesla, who opened for Def Leppard on their Hysteria tour, also honored the late guitarist with their 1991 Psychotic Supper track, "Song & Emotion."
  • Guitarist Phil Collen : "The backing track was influenced by some of the earlier Police songs and the middle section came about when Pete 'Woodroffe' said "Let's not have the standard, boring ol' middle eight, let's take the attention somewhere else and have a female solo vocal going off at the same time" so initially I put down a guide vocal and it did the trick so we kept it in the song."

"The other thing about the album, especially this track is the prominence of the bass guitar," he added. "Sav sounds great on this song! Almost like a featured solo, again, something we've never done before." (Source Deflepparduk.com )

    Monday, Monday
    So good to me

    Oh, Monday morning
    Monday morning couldn't guarantee

Oh, Monday morning you gave me no warning

    Oh, Monday, Monday

    Every other day
    Every other day
Every other day of the week is fine (fine), yeah
    But whenever Monday comes
    But whenever Monday comes
You can find me crying all of the time

    Monday, Monday
  • While awaiting the release of "California Dreamin'," band member Denny Doherty was prodding songwriter John Phillips to come up with some new material. Phillips said he would come back in the morning with "A song with universal appeal." Ignoring the sarcastic comments from the group members, Phillips came up with this. It's about the lousy feeling that comes with the end of the weekend and beginning of another workweek.
  • In a Songfacts interview, Alan Merrill relates the story of how his cousin - the noted songwriter Laura Nyro - got invited to the Monterey Pop Festival, which was her first major live appearance. Songwriter John Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas called her up and invited her to join them in Monterey. She hung up and told the news to her cousin Alan, who asked "That's great isn't it?" Nyro responds, "No, I've never done a gig. All I've ever done is recording." She had great anxiety about not having her own stage act. This anxiety, together with the personal problems of The Mamas & The Papas (Doherty was drinking heavily at the time, trying to get over Michelle Phillips and their affair), might have contributed to the gloomy atmosphere cast over the Monterey festival which had such dismal reviews. (Check out our interview with Alan Merrill .)
  • This was the first Hot 100 chart-topper with a day in the week in the title, and the only one with "Monday." ("Manic Monday" by the Bangles and "Rainy Days And Mondays" by the Carpenters both stalled at #2.)
  • Denny Doherty, who sang lead on this song for The Mamas & the Papas thought very little of "Monday Monday" when they recorded it. "Nobody likes Monday, so I thought it was just a song about the working man," he said. "Nothing about it stood out to me; it was a dumb f--kin' song about a day of the week."

As you can imagine, he was taken by surprise when the song became a huge hit.

Doherty wasn't alone in his incredulity: Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips didn't like the song either, and John Phillips claimed he had no idea what the song meant.
  • The Mamas & the Papas used top-tier Los Angeles studio musicians on their recordings. On this track, Larry Knechtel played keyboards, Joe Osborn played bass, Hal Blaine was on drums and P.F. Sloan played guitar. Sloan was the baby of the bunch, just 20 years old when the song was released. He describes it as a "magical session," and says that he gave Blaine the idea for the drum riff based on a song P.F. had worked on when he was a member of the Grass Roots. Sloan used a tremolo effect on his guitar part, which he overdubbed later.
  • This was the first #1 US hit by a group comprised of at least two men and two women.
  • "Monday, Monday" was the group's third single. "Go Where You Wanna Go" was issued first and went nowhere, but their next release was "California Dreamin'," which was a phenomenon. When that song was having its run, radio stations started playing "Monday, Monday" off the album, so by the time it was released as a single, it was already widely anticipated and quickly rose to #1.

  • Formaldehyde (or Methanal) is a colorless gas with a pungent, irritating odor. Its main application is as a disinfectant. In view of its widespread use and toxicity, exposure to formaldehyde is a significant consideration for human health. Lead singer Tom Smith described this track as, "a love song. A sugar coated, dissected heart in a jar, blood soaked love song."
  • Q magazine asked Smith what he would say to his two young children if they started asking why he is singing about chopping up bodies on this song? He replied: "I would explain it's still a love song. It's saying, 'I belong to you, do with me what you will'– that is a loving sentiment, just wrapped up in something scary.'"

    I'm The One
  • A track from Van Halen's first album, a version by 4 Non Blondes appeared in the 1994 movie Airheads in a scene where they take over a radio station.
  • Alex Van Halen used a double-kick drum on this - something he also did on "Hot For Teacher." When 4 Non Blondes recorded it, their drummer, Dawn Richardson, learned how to use a double-kick 3 days before they recorded it.
  • Linda Perry, who has gone on to write songs for Pink and Christina Aguilera, was lead singer of 4 Non Blondes. She is very good at singing like male rock singers, and a lot of people had no idea the version in Airheads wasn't Van Halen. Perry did a convincing Robert Plant when 4 Non Blondes recorded "Misty Mountain Hop" for the Led Zeppelin tribute album Encomium. (Thanks to Christa Hillhouse, who was the bass player for 4 Non Blondes, for speaking with us about this song)

    Coming of Age Lyrics

Well, I see ya standing there like a rabid dog
And you got those crying eyes
Makes me wanna surrender and wrap you in my arms
You know I try to live without regrets
I'm always moving forward and not looking back
But I tend to leave a trail of dead, while I'm moving ahead
    So I'm stepping away
'Cause I got nothing to say

Feels like, feels like it’s coming
    It feels like, feels like
    Like a Coming of Age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like a coming of age

And when my fear pulls me out to sea
And the stars are hidden by my pride and my enemies
I seem to hurt the people that I care the most
Just like an animal I protect my pride
When I'm too bruised to fight
And even when I'm wrong I tend to think I'm right

Well I’m bored of the game
    And too tired to rage

Feels like, feels like it’s coming
    It feels like, feels like
    Like a coming of age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like a coming of age

Feels like, feels like it’s coming
    It feels like, feels like
    Like a coming of age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like a coming of age

Feels like, feels like it’s coming
    It feels like, feels like
    Like a coming of age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like a coming of age

    Coming of Age
  • The first single from Supermodel finds Mark Foster singing about a girl he has moved on from but just can't seem to do without:

"I see you standing there like a rabid dog
And you got those crying eyes
    Makes it want to surrender
And wrap you in my arms."

The song was co-written and co-produced by Paul Epworth who worked with Adele on "Rolling In The Deep."
  • The recording of Supermodel took place during sessions in Morocco and Los Angeles with Paul Epworth. Foster told NME: "I waited until the music was done and wrote the lyrics in four weeks at the end. It's like a time capsule of thoughts and ideas and things I was struggling with at the time. I look back at some songs now and think, 'Wow, I was really angry when I wrote that!'"
  • Mark Foster told Danielle Perry on UK radio station XFM's Evening Show that this was the last song the band penned for Supermodel. "We wrote it in the studio while we were recording," he explained. "It kind of came out of nowhere, which songs do sometimes. It's kind of funny, it's the last song we wrote and recorded and it is the first song everybody is going to hear."
  • The song finds Foster reflecting on a whirlwind couple of years following the band's breakthrough. "Lyrically it is almost a confession," he said. "It is about a moment of clarity, having a moment of clarity and I think for me this year, being home, was that quiet after the storm of touring for two years and my life drastically changing."

"It was kind of the first breath I had to really look around and see that there were some things that happened during that period with my friends and with my loved ones, with the people that are close to me and with myself as well," Foster added. "It is the first time that I got a clear look on those things and that's kind of what the song is about. It's about growing up."
  • The song's music video was directed by Vern Moen and Zachary Rockwood with a vintage feel, and filmed in South Los Angeles Street. "We talked about on this record working with film more and working with classic photography and using California as a backdrop to everything that we were doing," Mark Foster explained.

The clip features time-lapse footage depicting the creation of a seven-story mural inspired by the Supermodel cover. It also features vignettes of different guys and one girl trying to get their act together and come of age.
