Outfit Lyrics

You want to grow up to paint houses like me
A trailer in my yard till you're twenty three
You want to be old after forty two years
Keep dropping the hammer and grinding the gears

Well, I used to go out in a Mustang, a 302 Mach One in green
Me and your Mama made you in the back and I sold it to buy her a ring
And I learned not to say much of nothing so I figured you already know
But in case you don't or maybe forgot, I'll lay it out real nice and slow

Don't call what your wearing an Outfit, don't ever say your car is broke
Don't worry about losing your accent, a southern man tells better jokes
Have fun, stay clear of the needle, call home on your sister's birthday
Don't tell them you're bigger than Jesus, don't give it away

Five years in a St. Florian foundry, they call it Industrial Park
Then hospital maintenance and tech school just to memorize Frigidaire parts
But I got to missing your Mama and I got to missing you too
And I went back to painting for my old man and I guess that's what I'll always do

So don't try to change who you are boy, and don't try to be who you ain't
And don't let me catch you in Kendale with a bucket of wealthy-man's paint

Don't call what your wearing an outfit, don't ever say your car is broke
Don't sing with a fake British accent, don't act like your family's a joke
Have fun, but stay clear of the needle, call home on your sister's birthday
Don't tell them you're bigger than Jesus, Don't give it away

Don't give it away

  • Penned by Truckers' guitarist Jason Isbell, this song describes the advice given to him by his own father, including such gems as, "Don't call what you're wearing an outfit." Isbell told Uncut magazine (February 2014): "A lot of these are direct quotes, or references to things which was strange pet peeves of his when I was a kid – the chorus especially, I was trying to show what kind of person he was. When I was born my dad was 19, my mother was 17, and 34 now, and I'm barely scratching the surface of figuring out how to be a grown-up. After I wrote it I played it for him, sure did. He's a bighearted guy, he got up bit of a tear."

    Lonely Teardrops
  • This was written by the Detroit songwriting team who wrote Wilson's first several hits - the duo of Tyran Carlo (the pen name of Wilson's cousin Roquel Davis) and a pre-Motown Berry Gordy Jr. They co-wrote eight other songs for Wilson. At the time, Gordy was a struggling songwriter, but this song - his first Top-10 hit as a songwriter - gave him the confidence to rent a building in Detroit and start the Tamla label, which would become Motown.
  • Many artists have covered this, including Jose Feliciano, teen idol pop singer Brian Hyland and Michael Jackson.
  • This was one of the 9 songs on which Berry Gordy, Jr. used the royalties to open up the Hitsville USA Studios, which soon became the home of the Motown artists.
  • This was a #1 R&B hit and Wilson's first song to reach the Top 10 on the US pop charts. It become one of his signature songs. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for above 2)
  • In September 1975, while performing at the Latin Casino in New Jersey, Wilson collapsed from a heart attack and a stroke right in the middle of this song. He never recovered and remained in a coma for eight more years; he was hospitalized until his death on January 21, 1984 (age 49). In tragic irony, the last words he sung before collapsing were "My heart is crying." The audience at first thought that his fall was part of the act and they started applauding and cheering. It became evident that something was wrong when about half a minute later, he hadn't moved. The excitement instantly turned into confusion and shock as attempts to revive Jackie on the stage were to no avail. (thanks, Denny - Pittsburgh, PA)

    Dress Blues Lyrics

What can you see from your window?
I can't see anythin' from mine
Flags on the side of the highway
And scripture on grocery store signs

    Maybe eighteen was too early
Maybe thirty or forty is too
Did you get your chance to make peace with the man
Before He sent down his angels for you?

Mamas and grand mamas love you
'Cause that's all they know how to do
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your Dress Blues

Your wife said this all would be funny
When you got back home in a week
Turn twenty two and we'd celebrate you
In a bar or a tent by the creek

Your baby would just about be here
And your very last tour would be up
But you won't be back, they're all dressin' in black
Drinkin' sweet tea in Styrofoam cups

Mamas and grand mamas love you
    American boys hate to lose
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues

    The high school gymnasium's ready
Full of flowers and old Legionnaires
    Nobody showed up to protest
    Just sniffle and stare

There's red, white and blue in the rafters
And there's silent old men from the Corps
What did they say when they shipped you away
    To fight somebody's Hollywood war?

    Nobody here could forget you
You showed us what we had to lose
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues

    Dress Blues
  • This song was inspired by the death of Isbell's school colleague, Corporal Matthew Conley, a US Marine who was killed in the Iraq War. Isbell told Uncut magazine (February 2014) : "I knew Matt Conley not very well, he was a few years younger. I was coming off a tour with the (Drive-By) Truckers, and I called my mom and she told me about his funeral, which she'd attended that day, and when I got home I wrote 'Dress Blues' in a time it takes to write it down on a piece of paper. I already had the chord progression from a song I've been working on about Mickey Rooney, of all things. The song just fit that tune."

The way I act don't seem like me
I'm not on top like I used to be
I'll give in when I know I should be strong
I still give in even though I know it's wrong, know it's wrong
    I Guess I'm Dumb but I don't care

And breaking off wasn't hard to do
But I couldn't stay away from you
I feel love but not the way I did before
This time girl, has got to be forever more, ever more
    I guess I'm dumb but I don't care

And baby since we've been apart
    Maybe I've found I had a heart
I couldn't let go even if I wanted to
You must know baby now it's only you, only you

  • Brian Wilson give this to Campbell as a "present" for his help in filling in for Wilson during live Beach Boys performances. It was Brian's most ambitious production to date and marks another step on the road to Pet Sounds.
  • The Honeys sang backup. The Honeys were comprised of Brian Wilson's wife Marilyn and her sister Diane Rovell.
  • This song was originally considered as a Beach Boys track on their Today! album.
  • The lyrics were written by Russ Titelman, who has worked as a producer with Buffalo Springfield, Paul Simon and James Taylor. (thanks, John Jennings - Omaha, NE, for all above)

I Can't Describe (The Way I Feel) Lyrics

I can't describe (the way I feel, the way I feel)
All of my heart (the way I feel, the way I feel)
I just can't put in words what I feel for you (the way I feel, the way I feel)
It feels so good it hurts, what you do (the way I feel, the way I feel)

I feel like I'm in love
That is nice but not good enough
I feel like saying something that's for us, that defines what's in our hearts
Dancing and we play around, you know you got me
And dancing feels like raining down all over my body
It tingles here, tingles there, ooh it tingles everywhere
That's why I never found the words to describe

I can't describe (the way I feel, the way I feel)
All of my heart (the way I feel, the way I feel)
I just can't put in words what I feel for you (the way I feel, the way I feel)
It feels so good it hurts, what you do (the way I feel, the way I feel)

This feels right, just staying up
And you don't describe when it's not
I can feel my happy thumping from your touch
In my life you're my love

Dancing and we play around, you know you got me
And dancing feels like raining down all over my body
It tingles here, tingles there, ooh it tingles everywhere
That's why I never found the words to describe

I can't describe (the way I feel, the way I feel)
All of my heart (the way I feel, the way I feel)
I just can't put in words what I feel for you (the way I feel, the way I feel)
It feels so good it hurts, what you do (the way I feel, the way I feel)

In the money, hopefully you tell me what we've both done
Right, right now, think about it later, boy just love me now

Come on Shawty, you already know 'bout me
In the summer Barcelona, Monaco I be
Kickin' flave on the gold coast, doing the most
We poppin' gold bottles, twenty thousand toes
I’m sending beezy up, they can take a walk on the moon
My wife’s got it showing in the middle of June
And we can kick it on the water when it’s out in the street
On the yacht, so it’ never free (getting money)
I’ll let you get to play a card, if you play you’re right
Make you shine on sight in the day or night
I could never be a bad I just say I be
But I could be good if the wood be good
In the drop top, park downtown, getting to it
Let you have it like a true dope boy should
The neighbors all here, you wanna do something to it
'Cause we work 'em all up, wake up to the mall up

I can't describe (the way I feel, the way I feel)
All of my heart (the way I feel, the way I feel)
I just can't put in words what I feel for you (the way I feel, the way I feel)

    I Can't Describe (The Way I Feel)
  • This 1970s-inspired dance ballad is an uptempo track that features a verse by Atlanta rapper T.I. Hudson said to MTV News of the cut, "You listen to it and it'll make you happy!"
  • Pharrell Williams wrote and produced the song. "Working with a visionary like Pharrell was a really special experience for me," said Hudson, "He is one of the most talented musicians of our time, and I couldn't be more proud of what we did together. I'm so thrilled to be sharing this song with everyone. For me, it's all about making people feel good, and showing them who I am as an artist. I make music to feed the soul, and I think this song will do that for a lot of people."
  • The song was released as the first single from JHUD. The album title references Hudson's nickname, which people have been using for a while. The songstress told Billboard magazine she's liked her moniker from the beginning. "The first time I heard of it was when I was on American Idol, and apparently a radio DJ in Chicago gave me this nickname," Hudson said. "Ever since everybody's been calling me JHud. No one calls me Jennifer Hudson anymore. I grew up being called Jenny Kate, so this is like the world's version of Jenny Kate."
  • Jennifer Hudson performed this at the 2013 Soul Train Awards , when she was joined by late '70s disco queens Evelyn King and Chaka Khan (as well as T.I.).

  • Guitarist John Cummings told Uncut magazine: "'I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead' was a concerted attempt to come up with a song title that mentioned Jim Morrison without being to base. 'Jim Morrison, American Prick' was a phrase we'd enjoyed, although it hadn't been assigned to any piece of music, but we thought it was too childish. And as no need to be so vulgar."

    Busy Doin' Nothin' Lyrics

I had to fix a lot of things this morning
    'Cause they were so scrambled
    But now it's okay
I tell you I've got enough to do

The afternoon was filled up with phone calls
What a hot sticky day, yeah yeah yeah
    The air is cooling down

Take all the time you need
    It's a lovely night
    If you decide to come
    You're gonna do it right

    Drive for a couple miles
You'll see a sign and turn left
    For a couple blocks
Next is mine, you'll turn left on a little road
    It's a bumpy one

    You'll see a white fence
Move the gate and drive through on the left side
    Come right in
And you'll find me in my house somewhere
    Keeping busy while I wait

I get a lot of thoughts in the morning
    I write 'em all down
    If it wasn't for that
I'd forget 'em in a while

And lately I've been thinking 'bout a good friend
I'd like to see more of, yeah yeah yeah
    I think I'll make a call

    I wrote a number down
    But I lost it
So I searched through my pocket book
    I couldn't find it
So I sat and concentrated on the number
And slowly it came to me
    So I dialed it

And I let it ring a few times
    There was no answer
So I let it ring a little more
    Still no answer

So I hung up the telephone
Got some paper and sharpened up a pencil
And wrote a letter to my friend

  • Mogwai upset some of their fans with Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will by including some surprisingly poppy tunes. Bassist Dominic Aitchison told Uncut magazine February 2014: "I have absolutely no idea where these upbeat songs came from, but again, we don't really know the direction a record's taking until it's nearly done. I definitely raised my eyebrows when I first heard ' George Square Thatcher Death Party' because I thought it was too straight ahead and not like us, but it was fun to play and it sat well when we were sequencing the album. Whole World Is Watching Lyrics

You live your life. You go day by day like nothing can go wrong.
The scars are made, they're changing the game. You learn to play it hard.

And I know you wish for more, and I know you try.
And now you realize, you know the time is right.

The Whole World Is Watching when you rise.
The whole world is beating for you right now.
Your whole life is flashing 'fore your eyes.
It's all in this moment that changes all.

    What are you waiting for?
    What are you fighting for?
    'Cause time's always slipping away.
    The whole world is watching.
The whole world is watching you when you rise.

You build your walls then break them away 'cause that is what it takes.
You saved yourself. You found who you are. That never goes away.

Yeah, the whole world is watching you when you rise.

Your sacrifice comes through your mind, but nothing is wasted. You made it now.
You rise again, breaking out. Each step you've taken, you've paid the price

    The whole world is watching.

    The whole world is watching.
Yeah, the whole world is watching you when you rise.

    What are you waiting for?
    What are you fighting for?
    'Cause time's always slipping away.
    The whole world is watching.

    Whole World Is Watching
  • Lyrically the song is about empowerment and overcoming obstacles, which are themes that carry through Hydra. In our interview with lead singer Sharon den Adel , she explained: "Sometimes when you finally get back from the setback in your life, the thing that has given you certain problems, you feel like everybody who was informed about the problem that you had - maybe it could be a physical problem or a disease or you've been struggling with a certain kind of thing - everybody who knows it is watching and mentally supporting you while you're reaching that moment that you stand up and you get over that problem.

That's a very positive feeling, a feeling of empowerment, like everybody is watching you while you're getting to this finish line. You finally ran that marathon and you finally reached the finish line. That's what the song is about. That's the feeling that we wanted to grasp. If you had something to battle for, something you've been working so hard for, it is the song when you come back and when you finally made that moment come true."
  • This track features Soul Asylum singer Dave Pirner. "In the beginning when we wrote the song, it was really a Soul Asylum kind of song," explained singer Sharon den Adel to Ultimate-Guitar.com . "I loved Soul Asylum and especially with the 'Runaway Train' song. It was always very special to me. We felt like, 'If we're gonna do this song on the album, we need to have him in as well.' Because it's maybe on the border of what we normally do."
  • The Polish version of the song features the native rock singer Piotr Rogucki of the band Coma instead of Pirner.

    Satin In A Coffin Lyrics

You were laying on the carpet
Like you're Satin In A Coffin.
You said, "Do you believe what you're sayin'?"
Yeah right now, but not that often.

Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
God I sure hope you are dead.

    Well you disappeared so often
    Like you dissolved into coffee.
    Are you here right now
Or are there probably fossils under your meat?

Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
God I sure hope you are dead.

    Now the blow's been softened,
Since the air we breathe's our coffin.
Well now the blow's been softened,
Since the ocean is our coffin.
Often times you know our laughter
    Is your coffin ever after.
And you know the blow's been softened,
Since the world is our coffin.
Well now the blow's been softened
Since we are our own damn coffins.
Well everybody's talkin' about their short lists.
    Everybody's talkin' about death.

You were laying on the carpet
Like you're satin in a coffin.
You said, "Do you believe what you're sayin'?"
Yeah right now, but not that often.

Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
