The First Noel Lyrics

The First Noel, the angel did say,
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the the East, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew night to the northwest,
O'er Bethlehem it took it's rest;
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel

The First Noel
  • "The First Noel" ("The First Nowell") is a traditional English carol most likely from the 16th or 17th century, but possibly dating from as early as the 13th century. It appeared in Some Ancient Christmas Carols (1823) and Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern (1833), edited by William Sandys.
  • The word Noel comes from the French word for "Christmas," from the Latin word natalis ("birthday").

    Saltwater Heart Lyrics

    Saltwater Heart
  • Drummer Chad Butler explained during a Spotify track-by-track: "'Saltwater Heart' came together in the magical island of Bali. We were traveling the world, chasing waves and songs and this song came together on the cliff overlooking the Indian ocean. It was inspired by the surroundings. This song is a reflection of that feeling of being on the edge of the earth."
  • Switchfoot vocalist Jon Foreman explained the song's meaning during a track-by-track on the Land Of Broken Hearts website : "'Saltwater' is a song about longing. On tour, I often feel brittle and thirsty for substance," he said. "Far from shore, far from home- the ink dries up, and the blood begins to clot. I begin to feel like a sojourner longing for home, wanting to be washed clean of the dust of travel. And yet there is a deeper longing. A spiritual longing that no physical location can give me- not even my hometown. 'Saltwater' is a song that is trying to speak to both of these longings at once: longings of my physical being and the longings of my soul."

    Silent Night
  • Halfway through December 1818, the church organ in St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, 11 miles north of Salzburg in what is now Austria, broke (a popular version of the story claims that mice had eaten out the bellows). The curate, 26-year-old Josef Mohr, realized it couldn't be repaired in time to provide music on Christmas Eve. He told his troubles to his friend, a headmaster and amateur composer named Franz Gruber, while giving him as a present a poem he had written two years earlier. Gruber was so taken by the rhythm of the poem that he set it to music, and on Christmas Eve there was music after all. Mohr played his guitar while the pair sang the song. It was the first public performance of "Stille Nacht" or as we know it "Silent Night."
  • It is believed that the carol has been translated into over 300 languages around the world, and it is one of the most popular carols of all time.
  • Bing Crosby's version became his best-seller of the 1930s.
  • Music licensing company PPL announced in December 2010 that this carol tops the list of Britain's "most recorded Christmas song of all time." Said Mike Dalby, Lead Reporting Analyst at PPL: "Silent Night is a beautiful carol which encapsulates the feeling of Christmas entirely. Everyone from punk band The Dickies right through to Sinead O'Connor has recorded it, which exemplifies just how much it resonates with all different types of artists."

According to PPL, Sinead O'Connor's 1991 recording was the most popular version of the carol in Britain.

  • Finnish DJ Darude's first hit single was a result of a collaboration with his fellow countryman JS16 of the Bomfunk MC's. The song initially conquered the Finnish charts holding the #1 spot on the nation's Dance Chart for seventeen consecutive weeks. Word spread to the rest of Europe about the track, and it eventually took off globally becoming the best selling 12-inch single worldwide in 2000.
  • This was the one of the first songs to find an audience through the internet. It was initially promoted with a 60 second slip of the track being posted on the web, then got airplay in discos and clubs before it was finally released to a waiting audience.
  • In June 2000 Darude became the first Finnish artist ever to reach a top 3 position on UK's single chart.
  • Wanderlei Silva, a mixed martial artist, uses "Sandstorm" as his theme song.
  • The song appeared in the movie Fun With Dick and Jane starring Jim Carrey.

    Among The Living Dead
  • This song features the voice of Blind Guardian singer Hansi Kürsch, who also contributed backing vocals to some other Plagues of Babylon tracks. He also is a member of the side project Demons and Wizards along with Iced Earth mainman/guitarist Jon Schaffer. Speaking with Metal Exiles , Schaffer explained how the collaboration happened: "Well the thing of it is, because we were in Germany, and literally like an hour and a half from Hansi's house it was pretty easy," he said. "That's different than doing something like Demons & Wizards where you have to get together, write songs, and I mean, Hansi came into the studio for one day. He got there around 2:00 in the afternoon, and he left at I think 10 or 11 that night. That's a whole different thing, coming in and singing parts that are already written, than getting together and writing songs...that's something that can take a couple months."

"I talked to Hansi while we were in Germany doing pre-production for the tracking and that was also pretty close to his house and he came to visit us and I played the song, 'Among the Living Dead' for him and I told him I would love for you to do a verse in this song," Schaffer continued. "He agreed, and said it would be cool, and of course he'd be up for that. And then a little bit later I mentioned to him that normally when I'm working in Indiana or Florida I have a group of backing vocalists that I can call upon to sing choir parts on the album, on the choruses. And being in Germany I was a stranger in a strange land, so I called Hansi and he said he'd be happy to help out and that he had a friend he could bring along too. So, that's how that worked out."

    A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Lyrics

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son
And where have you been, my darling young one
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
    And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
    It's A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son
And what did you see, my darling young one
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin'
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin'
I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children
    And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
    It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder that roared out a warnin'
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
    And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
    It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall

Oh, what did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman whose body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded with hatred
    And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
    It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall

And what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
And what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin'
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
And the executioner's face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'
But I'll know my song well before I start singin'
    And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
    It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall

    A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
  • This is a 7-minute anti nuclear war anthem. It was one of three social protest songs Dylan recorded on the album; the others are "Blowin' In The Wind" and "Masters of War." Dylan said that the rain was not literal fallout rain, but "some sort of end that's just gotta happen."
  • This was based on an old folk ballad variously titled "Lord Randall" or "Lord Ronald," in which a mother repeatedly questions her son (beginning with "Where have you been?"), leading him to reveal he has been poisoned. The song ends when he falls dead to the ground.
  • Ten years after Dylan recorded his version, Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry recorded a dark, claustrophobic cover as first ever solo single. In the UK it climbed to #10 in the charts.
  • In the liner notes to The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Dylan said: "Hard Rain is a desperate kind of song. Every line in it, is actually the start of a whole song. But when I wrote it, I thought I wouldn't have enough time alive to write all those songs so I put all I could into this one."
  • Bob Dylan once introduced this song by saying hard rain meant something big was about to happen.
  • According to journalist Bob Spitz, Dylan wrote this song on the typewriter of Hugh Romney, better known as Wavy Gravy.

    Mess On A Mission Lyrics

    Mess On A Mission
  • This was released as the first taster of Liars' Mess album. Speaking to NME about the LP's lyrical content, frontman Angus Andrew said: "In general, the lyrics toy with the idea of having a problem or a messed up head, like I do a lot, but then acknowledging that and utilising it rather than harping on about how difficult it makes things. Even though the reality of it is still fairly troubled and distraught, it's fun and immediate – and you won't have to spend too much time thinking about it."
  • The band said in a press release: "Mess On A Mission acknowledges some of the modern day issues of uncertainty, of being overwhelmed with possibilities, too many choices and it vocalises them. It's cathartic and a more positive spin on something our music has always dealt with: anxiety."
  • The Luis Cerveró-directed video was filmed in a Burnank studio and features the band walking backwards up a staircase. As they ascend further, things become more unreal. "I'd like to leave it open for everyone to read it their way," Cerveró told Urban Outfitters of the clip's concept. "But basically, what happens is that reality gets increasingly diluted to the beats of the track."

"Luis' treatment immediately stood out: Mostly because I couldn't really understand what on earth he was proposing," Angus Andrew added. "All I could tell was that somehow he was really fascinated by the idea that nowadays, in filmmaking, you can no longer tell what's real and what isn't."

    Better than watching Gellar
    Bending silver spoons
    Better than witnessing
    Newborn nebulas in bloom
    She who sees from up

    High smiles and surely sings
    Perspective pries her once
    Weighty eyes and
    It gives you wings
    I haven't felt the way
    I feel today

    In so long its hard
    For me to specify
    I'm beginning to notice
    How much this feels like
    A waking limb
    Pins and needles
    Nice To Know You
    Goodbye
    Nice to know you

    Deeper than the deepest
    Coustou would ever go
Higher than the heights of what
    We often think we know
    Blessed she who clearly
Sees the wood for the trees
To obtain a bird's eye is to
Turn a blizzard to a breeze

    I haven't felt the way
    I feel today
    In so long its hard
    For me to specify
    I'm beginning to notice
    How much this feels like
    A waking limb
    Pins and needles
    Nice to know you
    Goodbye
    Nice to know you
    To know, you

Could it be that it had
    Been there all along

    I haven't felt the way
    I feel today
    In so long its hard
    For me to specify
    I'm beginning to notice
    How much this feels like

    Nice to know you

    Nice To Know You
  • Lead singer Brandon Boyd: "I had a moment in my life about a year ago where I was way too close to everything that was going on and I was blind, I felt like I was asleep. And the clouds parted for kind of a strange reason and I gained perspective. What happened was my hand had fallen asleep on the airplane on the way to Europe and it remained asleep for about 10 days, which was kind of scary. I must have pinched a nerve or something. But as my hand started waking up, the clouds started breaking away from that emotional state as well. The two happened simultaneously, so I created a simple metaphor for it. So it's basically a song about gaining perspective on a situation."
  • The line, "Better than watching Gellar bending silver spoons" is a reference to Uri Gellar, who is famous for using psychic powers to bend spoons.

  • It was only after penning this ballad that Cash felt she could write proper songs. She recalled to American Songwriter magazine: "When I was 18, I had gone on the road with Dad. I was trying to make my songs rhyme and trying to muddle through on the forms of songs I had inherited. Then, I wrote 'This Has Happened Before'; I remember working so hard on that song and realizing that it didn't have to fit all those forms I was trying to force on it; that was the moment that I felt like could do this."

There's No I In Team Lyrics

    Well I can't regret,
    Can't you just forget it?
    I started something I couldn't finish
    And if we go down,
    We go down together
    Best friends means,
    Well best friends means

    And I've got a twenty-dollar bill
That says you're up late night starting
Fist fights versus fences in your backyard
Wearing your black eye like a badge of honor
    Soaking in sympathy
From friends who never loved you
Nearly half as much as me

Broken down in bars and bathrooms
All I did was what I had to
Don't believe me when I tell you
It's just what anyone would do
Take the time to talk about it
Think a lot and live without it
Don't believe me when I tell you
    It's something unforgivable oh oh

    Well I can't regret,
    Can't you just forget it?
    I started something I couldn't finish
    If we go down,
    We go down together
    Best friends means,
    Well best friends means

    You never knew
    Well I never told you
Everything I know about breaking hearts
I learned from you, it's true
I've never done it with the style and grace you have
But I've made long term plans
    Based on these mistakes

Broken down in bars and bathrooms
All I did was what I had to
Don't believe me when I tell you
It's just what anyone would do
Take the time to talk about it
Think a lot and live without it
Don't believe me when I tell you
    It's something unforgivable

Is this what you call tact?
I swear you're as subtle as a brick in the small of my back
    So let's end this call,
    And end this conversation
    There's nothing worse
(That's right he said, that's right he said it)
I swear, you have no idea
The jealousy that became me thinking
    (That's right he said)
That you always had it way too easy

Broken down in bars and bathrooms
All I did was what I had to
Don't believe me when I tell you
It's just what anyone would do
Take the time to talk about it
Think a lot and live without it
Don't believe me when I tell you
    It's something unforgivable

Best friends means I pulled the trigger

  • The Jefferson City, Missouri, Rock band Shaman's Harvest recorded this as the theme song of a Scottish professional wrestler named Drew McIntyre. He first started using the song in February 2010, six months after his debut.

Originally, the song had an intro where the accompanying video playing on the Titantron, a giant screen above the entrance stage, would cover the full screen of the television, showing his name and slow-motion footage of him. Of course, this only applies to people who are watching WWE on TV, and not to the audience at the actual show. This was eventually cut in late 2010. (thanks, Guy - New York, NY)
