Orinoco Flow (Sail Away) Lyrics

Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)
  • The Orinoco River flows across South America. It is about 1,300 miles long and goes through parts of Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. The song's title refers to Orinoco Studios in London, where this and the rest of the Watermark album was recorded. It is not known if it was a dual reference to the South American river as well.
  • This was Enya's first hit. It got a lot of exposure and was released as a single after getting airplay on The Steve Wright Show on BBC Radio One in the UK. Enya went on to become the best-selling female singer in the world.
  • The words "We can steer, we can near, with Rob Dickens at the wheel" refer to Rob Dickins, the head of her record label WEA. Dickins is listed as a producer on the album. In an article published December 13, 2008, Dickins said: "When I signed Enya, her manager/producer Nicky Ryan said, 'You're not going to push us for singles, are you?' It wasn't that kind of music. After we'd made the Watermark album, I said as a joke, 'Nicky, where's the single?' A week later Nicky rang up and said, 'We've got it!' Got what? 'We've got the single!'

He sent over what became 'Orinoco Flow.' There was no middle eight, and 'Sail away' was after every line - it drove me crazy, but there was something there that could be worked on. Orinoco was the name of the studio and I think they saw me as the captain of the ship. The whole thing was a metaphor for a journey for all of us.

I was in charge of the record company for the UK and Ireland, but we never had any Irish music. Someone said, 'You like Clannad, you'd like this soundtrack album this ex-Clannad member has done.' She'd done the music for the BBC series The Celts. I loved it and played it every night. We met at an Irish awards ceremony and I said, 'You must do a vocal record.' The record company thought I was mad, but I said what became a famous quote - 'Sometimes you sign acts to make money and sometimes you sign acts to make music.' In the week of release, Tower Records phoned up to say that when they played the album in the shop they sold 45 copies - almost everyone in the shop had bought the record. It was unheard of. It went from 29 to five, then to #1 and we sold bucketloads of albums. It was totally rags to riches.
It's one of the things I'm most proud of. Funnily enough, I hadn't even noticed the lyric until they printed the album. It was embarrassing. But when it went to #1 I thought, 'I'm in the lyric of a number one song, how fabulous.' All these years later, if I hear that line 'Rob Dickins at the wheel' I can't help smiling."
  • The lyricist on this track was Roma Ryan, the wife of the song's producer Nicky Ryan. In 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Ryan said: "Orinoco Flow was a very difficult song to work on, because we had it shelved a few times. We would work on it for a while, leave it, then go back to it again, but in the end we said 'This is good.' All the time it was an album track and only at the very end was it decided it might be good as a single."
  • The video was an extension of the Watermark album sleeve. Enya commented (also in 1000 UK #1 Hits), "We were so happy with the cover which was basically a picture of me, but there layers and layers of beautiful imagery revolving around me that were hand painted on, and this is what we achieved with the video."
  • In a bit of cinematic dissonance similar to the "Singin' In The Rain" scene in A Clockwork Orange or the "Stuck In The Middle With You" scene in Reservoir Dogs, this song was used in a violent scene in the 2011 movie The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. According to the film's director David Fincher, they liked the idea of the villain enjoying music when he kills, and the star of the movie Daniel Craig dialed up this song on his iPod. They felt it was a great fit and used the song for the scene.
  • Despite this song's success, many listeners had no idea what Enya looked like, or even if "Enya" was the name of a singer or a band. To protect her privacy, she kept a low profile and did minimal publicity.

    We Are One Lyrics

    We walk alone
    In the unknown
We live to win another victory
    We are the young
    Dying sons
We live to change the face of history so be afraid
    It's the price we pay
The only easy day was yesterday
    So hear our voice,
    We have a choice,
    It's time to face it

    We Are One
    We are one
    We are one
    We will stand together
    Number one
    Number one
    The chosen ones
    We are one
    We are one
    We will fight forever
We are one and we won't tire

    We are the bold
    United souls
We live to win another victory
    Our sacred scars
    Show who we are
And tell the story of our memories

    Don't be afraid
    It's the price we pay
The only easy day was yesterday
    So hear our voice
    We have a choice
    It's time to face it

    Marrakesh Express Lyrics

    Looking at the world
Through the sunset in your eyes
    Trying to make the train
    Through clear Moroccan skies
Ducks and pigs and chickens call
    Animal carpet wall to wall
American ladies five foot tall in blue

Sweeping cobwebs from the edges of my mind
Had to get away to see what we could find
Hope the days that lie ahead
Bring us back to where they've led
Listen not to what's been said to you

    Would you know we're riding
    On the Marrakesh Express
    Would you know we're riding
On the Marrakesh Express, they're taking me to Marrakesh
All on board the train, all on board the train

I've been saving all my money just to take you there
I smell the garden in your hair

Take the train from Casablanca going south
Blowing smoke rings from the corners of my my, my, my, my mouth
    Colored cottons hang in air
    Charming cobras in the square
Striped Djellebas we can wear at home, well let me hear you now
Don't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express
Don't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express
They're taking me to Marrakesh Express
Don't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express
Don't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express
    They're taking me to Marrakesh
    All on board the train
All on board the train, all on board

    Marrakesh Express
  • Marrakesh is a city in Morocco famous for leather goods. The "Marrakesh Express" is the train Graham Nash took on a trip there from Casablanca in 1966. The lyrics are filled with the sights, sounds and vibes that he encountered on the trip.
  • Prior to exiting the Hollies in 1968, Nash offered this to his band mates. However, the tune was ultimately rejected as being not commercial enough. Their refusal to record this and other tunes he wrote was one of the main reasons Nash left the band and moved to Los Angeles to join up with Crosby and Stills. "After a couple months of that, a man is liable to go insane," Nash said of having his songs rejected, adding, "especially being the only one who was smoking grass at the time." Fortunately, his new bandmates liked the tune and it ended up on their debut album.
  • The became Crosby Sills And Nash's first hit in the US, and surprisingly their only Top 40 single in the UK.
  • Graham Nash told Rolling Stone magazine the story of this song: "In 1966 I was visiting Morocco on vacation to Marrakesh and getting on a train and having a first-class ticket and then realizing that the first-class compartment was completely f--king boring, you know, ladies with blue hair in there - it wasn't my scene at all. So I decide I'm going to go and see what the rest of the train is like. And the rest of the train was fascinating. Just like the song says, there were ducks and pigs and chickens all over the place and people lighting fires. It's literally the song as it is - what happened to me."
  • Crosby babbles some strange-sounding words like "Whoopa, hey mesa, hooba huffa, hey meshy goosh goosh" at the beginning of the song. Graham Nash remembered: "It's some Crosby gibberish that we moved from the beginning of 'Guinnevere' to the front of 'Marrakesh Express.'"

    Cool Kids Lyrics

She sees them walking in a straight line, that's not really her style.
And they all got the same heartbeat, but hers is falling behind.
Nothing in this world could ever bring them down.
Yeah, they're invincible, and she's just in the background.
    And she says,

"I wish that I could be like the Cool Kids,
'Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in.
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids."

He sees them talking with a big smile, but they haven't got a clue.
Yeah, they're living the good life, can't see what he is going through.
They're driving fast cars, but they don't know where they're going.
In the fast lane, living life without knowing.
    And he says,

"I wish that I could be like the cool kids,
'Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in.
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids.
I wish that I could be like the cool kids,
'Cause all the cool kids they seem to get it.
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, like the cool kids."

    And they said,
"I wish that I could be like the cool kids,

    Cool Kids
  • Echosmith is a South Californian indie-pop band comprising siblings: vocalist Sydney, guitarist Jamie, bassist Noah, and drummer Graham Sierota. The group was originally formed in February 2009 and their father booked the quartet's first gig, enlisting his kids to play a benefit concert for a friend's daughters.

Echosmith signed to Warner Bros. Records in May 2012 and this dreamy tune is a track from their debut album, Talking Dreams, which was released on October 8, 2013.
  • The song tells the story of a boy and girl who just want to be noticed. "This cry to be like the cool kids… it's something that everyone kind of goes through whether you want to act like it or not," Jamie explained to Radio.com . "There's always somebody out there that you kind of wish, 'If only I could do this, or do that.' I think that's why it connects with people so well."
  • Echosmith performed the song on December 31, 2013 during the Teen Nick Top 10: New Year's Eve Countdown, hosted by Nick Cannon.
  • Sydney Sierota explained the song's meaning to The Sun. "It's about the desire to fit in," she said. "But the message is to accept yourself and that's all it takes to be cool. We see people of all ages coming to our shows, so it's really cool to see that everyone is able to connect on that level and to be able to embrace who they are."
  • According to the group, listeners often mishear the title as "cookies."

    I'm Into Something Good Lyrics

Woke up this mornin' feelin' fine
There's somethin' special on my mind
Last night I met a new girl in the neighbourhood, whoa yeah
Somethin' tells me I'm Into Something Good
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')

She's the kind of girl who's not too shy
And I can tell I'm her kind of guy
She danced close to me like I hoped she would
(she danced with me like I hoped she would)
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')

We only danced for a minute or two
But then she stuck close to me the whole night through
Can I be fallin' in love
She's everthing I've been dreamin' of
She's everthing I've been dreamin' of

I walked her home and she held my hand
    I knew it couldn't be just a one-night stand
So I asked to see her next week and she told me I could
(I asked to see her and she told me I could)
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin', ahhh)

I walked her home and she held my hand
    I knew it couldn't be just a one-night stand
So I asked to see her next week and she told me I could
(I asked to see her and she told me I could)
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
To something good, oh yeah, something good
(somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
To something good, something good, something good

    I'm Into Something Good
  • The prolific songwriting team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote this. They wrote popular songs for The Monkees, Aretha Franklin, The Crystals and many others.
  • This was originally recorded by Earl-Jean (real name Ethel McCrea), who had been the lead singer the R&B vocal group The Cookies. Her version peaked at #38 in the US. Producer Mickie Most heard it and decided to cover it with a new British group, Herman's Hermits. The band was fronted by 16-year-old John F. Kennedy lookalike Peter Noone, who had already appeared in the British TV soap Coronation Street, and Most replaced the rest of the band with top session players like Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, both future members of Led Zeppelin.
  • This was Herman's Hermits' only song to reach #1 in the UK, but they went on to further success in both the UK and US, including the American #1 hits "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter" and "I'm Henry The Eighth I Am."
  • Peter Noone recorded a new version of this song for the 1988 movie The Naked Gun. Herman's Hermits recorded for Cameo/Parkway Records, which was bought by Allen Klein, who as a result owned the rights to the songs Herman's Hermits recorded for the label as well as tracks by The Animals, Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell and many others. Klein rarely allowed the songs he controlled to be used in movies.

Before Allen Klein's death in 2009, Peter Noone explained to the Forgotten Hits newsletter how this song ended up in The Naked Gun: "They wanted to use the song in the movie. Klein declined because he knew he would have to ACCOUNT TO SOMEBODY (eg Paramount). As he hates to account to anyone, because he can't cheat and lie, he had to say no. The producers and writers contacted me with their story and I said, 'I can make a copy exactly like the original and nobody will be able to tell the difference.' When it was done, we decided you couldn't tell the difference so we took off the guitar and replaced it with a whahhoo machine so Klein wouldn't say it was the original. It's a tragedy that Klein and his witless children stop all the product they control from being in movies so they can steal ALL the money. A question: Have any songs under the Klein families' control ever been used in movies, commercials, TV shows? Doesn't anyone ever wonder why? Surely there would be one Herman's Hermits song, one Animals song. One song from a Cameo / Parkway artist, one Sam Cooke song, just one, that would work in a motion picture?"
  • Donny Osmond recorded this when he was 13 for his second album To You With Love, Donny in 1971. Other artists to record it include Graham Parker and The Surfaris.
  • In late 2005, this was used in a commercial for Yogurt Blast Cheerios.

    Dare You Lyrics

    We’re a million lonely people
All together on this needle in the sky
    Afraid of heights
And your dreams were made illegal
By the laws of lesser evil
We call I, but not tonight

    I Dare You to love
    I dare you to cry
    I dare you to run
    I dare you to try

    I dare you to fall
    And lay on the ground
    I dare you to feel
    I dare you to be

You’re an outline of a vision
That you had when we were children
    Yesterday
    You watch it fade
Let your heart be your religion
Let it break you out of this prison
    You became
    It’s not too late

    I dare you to love
    I dare you to cry
    I dare you to run
    I dare you to try

    I dare you to fall
    And lay on the ground

    I'll never let you see
The way my broken heart is hurting me
I've got my pride and I know how to hide
    All the sorrow and pain
I'll do my Crying In The Rain

If I wait for cloudy skies
You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes
You'll never know that I still love you
    So though the heartaches remain
I'll do my crying in the rain

    Raindrops falling from heaven
Will never wash away my misery
    But since we're not together
    I'll wait for stormy weather
To hide these tears I hope you'll never see

    Someday when my crying's done
I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun
    I may be a fool
But till then, darling, you'll never see me complain
I'll do my crying in the rain

    Crying In The Rain
  • Written by Howard Greenfield and Carole King, this was the Everlys' first hit with a song from the Brill Building stable of songwriters.

King, writing with her usual partner Gerry Goffin, had just previously come from two top-charting successes: "Run To Him" and "Take Good Care Of My Baby," both for Bobby Vee. Al Kirshner, co-producer at Aldon Music, had originally intended "Run To Him" to be for the Everly Brothers, but Vee's producer had snagged that song, too. Kirchner had been eager to produce a hit for the Everlys since his first day in business, so this was a dream come true for him.
  • This was recorded shortly before Don and Phil Everly were inducted into the Marine Corps Reserves on November 25, 1961. On February 18, 1962, the duo performed the song in full uniform on The Ed Sullivan show, and on March 3, the song reached its peak of #6 on the US charts. Don and Phil got out of the Corps on May 24, after 6 months of service. It was the only Everly Brothers song released during their time in the military.
  • This was the Everly's first Top-10 hit song in a year. As a gesture of gratitude, they found out that producer Don Kirshner's favorite snack was peanuts, so they shipped him a fifty pound sack. Talk about working for peanuts!
  • Shortly after this song came out, the performance rights organization Broadcast Music, Inc., held their annual awards to honor the most-played songs of the year. Out of the 90 awards handed out that night, Aldon Music took home 12, four times more than any other music publisher. So this song comes from a golden age of the Brill Building music era.

Somebody remind me where I am
    Miami or Timbuktu?
Did I ever tell you my uncle's monkey ran away from the zoo?
Would you tell me what this all means?
What happens if I go through that door?
'Cause I'm looking up at the ceiling, but it's turning into the floor

When I'm bored, I, kinda drift away,
I'm not sure, quite, why we work all day
I've been thinking, and I've got this plan

    Let's go, right now

Come meet me in the sky I'll be waiting for you
And we can't hear what they say
Up in my Air Balloon, air balloon, air balloon (ha)
Sing, sing along, along any song you want to
Now we're so high, it can't rain
Up in my air balloon, air balloon, air balloon (ha)

I don't like dropping names but Kurt Cobain is all in my face
How the hell am I gonna tell him Elvis already took first base?
In and out of the blue this cruise is losing altitude, all we need
Is a little more elevation, take me back to where I can breathe

When I'm bored, I, kinda drift away

Shake it, sha-shake it, shake it now
    Gimme, gi-gimme, gimme some
    Sailing sa-sailing through the clouds
    Trippin' trip trip it now

Shake it, sha-shake it, shake it now

  • This tongue-in-cheek bubblegum pop tune finds Allen singing about escaping reality over a toy piano arrangement:

"I'm not sure quite why we work all day
I've been thinking and I've got this plan
    Let's go, right now
Come meet me in the sky I'll be waiting for you."

Allen penned the tune with Johann Shellback. The Swedish hitmaker's other writing credits include Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" and Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble."
  • Speaking to Capital FM about the song, Allen said: "I suppose it's about escapism really, and daydreaming in a lot of ways. My husband is constantly infuriated with me, because he'll be talking to me when we're sitting down having dinner or something, and I'm looking at him, but I'm totally not paying any attention at all."
  • The video was shot in Cape Town and directed by That Go (Noel Paul and Stefan Moore). Allen was criticized by some religious groups for the end part where she is seen dodging a floating crucified Jesus on outer space and by animals rights organisation PETA for the use of exotic animals.

Allen commented to chat show host Graham Norton: "I signed up for it as it sounded like fun and then I am there with a cheetah thinking, 'what am I doing?'

"I had a steak wiped on my face," she added, "so that it would lick me but I had been warned not to eat steak the night before in case I burped and he might have eaten me!"
  • The Sheezus title references Kanye West's 2013 album Yeezus. "It's an homage, not a piss take," tweeted Allen.

    Sunshine Superman Lyrics

Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
    Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways
It'll take time, I know it but in a while
You're gonna be mine, I know it, we'll do it in style
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine

    I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody's hustlin' just to have a little scene
When I say we'll be cool I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, a-it never ends
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

    Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
    I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find

Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
'Bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

    I'll pick up your hand
    I'll pick up your hand

    Sunshine Superman
  • Donovan first met his future wife, Linda Lawrence, in 1965 when she was recovering from a broken relationship with Rolling Stones founding member Brian Jones. The pair dated briefly, but not wanting the scrutiny and uncertainty of being a pop star's girlfriend all over again, Lawrence broke it off at the end of the year. Donovan responded with this song.

"It's not a normal love song, the singer told Mojo magazine June 2011. "On the face of it, the song is about being with Linda again. But sunshine is a nickname for acid. The Superman is the person capable of entering higher states because it's not easy to go into the fourth dimension and see the matrix of the universe in which everything is connected.

The line, 'everybody's hustling' referred to the pop scene at the time, where you could lose yourself very easily. Gyp (Mills - Donovan's lifelong friend and tour manager) would always keep my feet on the ground; we had left home at 16 to busk so we could see fame for what it is."
  • Donovan was good friends with The Beatles, and they were both making very innovative and trippy music at the time. Donovan's producer Mickie Most told him not to play the Sunshine Superman album to Paul McCartney under any circumstances, because he knew McCartney would be tempted to do something similar.

Donovan recalled to Uncut magazine: "My arse was being sued by Pye after Sunshine Superman so , my masterwork, sat on the shelves for seven months. If you date it, it was at least a year and a half before Sgt Pepper and I remember Mickie saying to me, 'Don't play it to McCartney' but of course everybody was sharing with everyone else and nicking from each other."

"I played it to McCartney anyway," he continued. "But they were already there, anyway, and George Martin was doing something similar with The Beatles, working out arrangements from ideas they had in their heads. George Martin was The Beatles' guy and John Cameron was my guy and they both had an appreciation of jazz which was key."

Originally, the "Sunshine Superman" single was subtitled "For John And Paul," a reference to Lennon and McCartney.
  • Jimmy Page played lead guitar on this. Page was a session musician at the time.
  • Donovan was recording for Pye Records when he was working on this. Pye also had Mickie Most under contract, but he moved to CBS before the album could be released. This prompted a lawsuit that delayed release of the album, so it didn't come out in the US until September, 1966, and wasn't released in the UK until 1967. This was unfortunate for Donovan, because this would have been considered much more innovative if it was released on schedule.
  • This was one of the first ever overtly psychedelic pop records. Donovan played down the drug implications of the song, but they were certainly implied: "Sunshine" was a name for LSD.
  • This was Donovan's first collaboration with arranger, musician and jazz fan John Cameron, who developed a new sound for him. Cameron played the harpsichord on this recording.
  • In the video for The Beatles "A Day In The Life" you can see a close up of "Sunshine Superman" playing on a spinning turntable.
  • Donovan had a fleeting love affair with the model Linda Lawrence in 1965. He bumped into her four years later and they married in 1970. Donovan said in an interview with The Guardian newspaper May 24, 2005, "Linda's in all the songs. 'Sunshine Superman,' 'Hampstead Incident,' 'Young Girl Blues'... Linda's the muse."

  • This was used in the 2010 "Snow Trip" television commercials for the Honda Accord.
  • The song was Donovan's only single to reach #1 on the Hot 100 . "Gypsy Dave [Donovan's creative companion] and I went off to Greece with about three quid in my pocket," he recalled to Billboard magazine. "The phone rang, and Ashley Kozak, my manager, said 'Get yourself back to Athens, you've got a first-class ticket to London. 'Superman''s released and it's #1 all over the world.'"
  • Imani Coppola sampled the instrumental track for her 1997 single "Legend of a Cowgirl," which peaked at #32 in the UK.

    Sleeping With a Friend Lyrics

    All my friends
    They're different people
Anxious like the Ocean in the storm
    When we go out
    Yeah, we're electric
Coursing' through our bodies til we're warm

And why mess up a good thing baby?
It's a risk to even fall in love
So when you give that look to me
    I better look back carefully
    'Cause this is trouble
    Yeah, this is trouble

    I said, ooh ooh
You got me in the mood mood
I'm scared but if my heart's gonna break
    Before the night will end
    I said, ooh ooh
    We're in danger
    Sleeping With a Friend

    All my friends
    Stay up past midnight
Looking for the thing to fill the void
    I don't go out
    Much like I used to
Something about the strangers and the noise

And why leave when I got you baby
It's a risk but babe, I need the thrill
I never said you'd be easy
But if it was all up to me
    I'd be no trouble
    Yeah, we're in trouble

    I said, ooh ooh
You got me in the mood mood
I'm scared but if my heart's gonna break
    Before the night will end
    I said, ooh ooh
    We're in danger
    Sleeping with a friend
    Sleeping with a friend

    We are both young
    Hot blooded people
    We don't wanna die alone
    To become one
    It could be lethal
    Sleeping with a friend

    All my friends
    All my friends
    All my friends
    All my friends

    Oh I said, ooh ooh
You got me in the mood mood
I'm scared but if my heart's gonna break
    Before the night will end
    I said, ooh ooh
    We're in danger
    Sleeping with a friend

    (All my friends)
    Sleeping with a friend
    (All my friends)

If my heart's gonna break before the night will end
    I said, ooh ooh
    We're in danger

    Sleeping With a Friend
  • The first single to be released from Pop Psychology is an ode to friends with benefits. "It's the sex song that I kinda know how to write," Neon Trees singer Tyler Glenn said in an interview with KROQ's Kevin & Bean. "I don't know how to write an S&M-fueled Rihanna banger because I don't think our sex lives are… I don't think most people's sex lives are 'Blurred Lines,' or that kind of swingers party."
  • This cautionary tale of hooking up with someone you're close with is something Glenn experienced, but wouldn't necessarily recommend. "I'm an awkward guy and so it's not about me trying to desperately hook up," he explained to Radio.com . "It's more about…the danger involved and the risk. So it's very dorky. It's a dorky song."
  • Tyler Glenn came out as gay shortly before the Pop Psychology album was released. He admitted that this song is about an old friend - who is straight - that he had a crush on for years. Glenn said that he had lost touch with this person and wasn't sure what kind of reaction he would get.
  • Despite Tyler Glenn coming out as gay, most of the pronouns on the Pop Psychology songs and the love interests in their videos remain female. "I don't think pronouns matter really with music because music is so universal," Glenn told MTV News.

Glenn added that women are not always the love interests they seem in the band's work. For instance, regarding this song's music clip, he said. "Technically I'm sort of running from this girl in the video. Not to make women out to be bad, but… I kind of spent my life trying to date girls when in reality it just wasn't my nature."

    Why Georgia Lyrics

I am driving up 85 in the
Kind of morning that lasts all afternoon
    Just stuck inside the gloom
4 more exits to my apartment but
I am tempted to keep the car in drive
    And leave it all behind

    Cause I wonder sometimes
    About the outcome
    Of a still verdictless life

    [Chorus]
    Am I living it right?
    Am I living it right?
    Am I living it right?
    Why, Why Georgia, why?

I rent a room and I fill the spaces with
Wood in places to make it feel like home
    But all I feel's alone
It might be a quarter life crisis
Or just the stirring in my soul

    Either way I wonder sometimes
    About the outcome
    Of a still verdictless life

    [Chorus]

So what, so I've got a smile on
But it's hiding the quiet superstitions in my head
    Don't believe me
    Don't believe me
When I say I've got it down

Everybody is just a stranger but
That's the danger in going my own way
I guess it's the price I have to pay
Still "everything happens for a reason"
Is no reason not to ask myself

    [Chorus]

    Why Georgia
  • This song is about a growing trend among the North American population. After graduating from university, adults are now going through second adolescence since, for the most part, they wait until their 30s to get settle down, get married and have kids. This explores these feelings of drifting, feeling like you don't really have a purpose in your life.
  • Mayer wrote this song when he was living in Atlanta, Georgia. He was having his doubts on whether he would be successful and if he should leave Atlanta. In the song, he states that he's tempted to keep driving in the car and leave everything behind.

    World Of Strange Design Lyrics

Well you’re not from around here
    You’re probably not our kind
It’s hot from March to Christmas
    And other things you’ll find

    Won’t fit your old ideas
    Their line is shifting sands,
You walk across a ghostly bridge
    To a crumbling promise land

    [Chorus]
    If Jesus came from Mississippi
    If tears began to rise
I guess I’ll start at the beginning
    The World Of Strange Design

Well I’d like to have the ocean
But I’d settle for the rain
    Humbly as for true love
There was such a price to pay

This room was filled with trouble
    And sacraments deceived
And I’m with you, we’re in the shade
    Of his weeping willow tree

    If Jesus came from Mississippi
    If tears began to rise
I’ll have to go back to the beginning
In this world of strange design

    We talk about your drinking
    But not about your thirst
You set off through the mine field
Like you were round in first

    So open up their window
    And hand the baby through
Point up towards the ghostly bridge
And she’ll know what to do

    If Jesus came from Mississippi
    If tears began to rise
They’ll have to go back to the beginning
In this world of strange design

  • Cash told Uncut magazine about this song: "I was allowing my madness to run riot, free – associative staff," she said. "I thought if I was really in that dense, weird, wonderful South and looking out for a minute – how might my world be, how might it look? Well... Jesus would come from Mississippi. I was able to tap into some madness."
