One Night Lyrics

One Night of sin, yeah
Is what I'm now paying for
The things I did and I saw
Would make the earth stand still

Don't call my name
It makes me feel so ashamed
I lost my sweet helping hand
I got myself to blame

Always lived, very quiet life
Ain't never did no wrong
But now I know that very quiet life
Has cost me nothing but harm

One night of sin, yeah
Is what I'm now paying for
The things I did and I saw
Would make the earth stand still

Always lived, very quiet life
Ain't never did no wrong
But now I know that very quiet life
Has cost me nothing but harm

One night of sin, yeah
Is what I'm now paying for
The things I did and I saw
Would make the earth stand still

One Night
  • This was written by Dave Bartholomew and Dave King. Bartholomew wrote some of Fats Domino's hits, including "Walking To New Orleans," "Whole Lotta Lovin'" and "Blue Monday."
  • Smiley Lewis originally recorded this in 1956. His version hit #11 on the R&B charts, but didn't crack the Pop charts.
  • Elvis recorded this in February 1957. A year later, Elvis went into the army. During this time, Elvis was in Germany so his record company began releasing previously recorded tracks. In the US, this came out in 1958; in the UK it was released in 1959. It was Elvis' first song to reach the top of the UK charts after he went into the army.
  • In January 2005 this was re-released in the UK to commemorate Elvis' 70th birthday. It went to #1, replacing Elvis' "Jailhouse Rock," which was also re-released. It became the fourth track ever to be #1 twice and only the third time in UK chart history that an artist has replaced themselves at the top of the charts. The other two occasions occurred in 1963 when The Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand" replaced "She Loves You" and in 1981 when John Lennon's "Woman" replaced "Imagine." Both songs were re-released following Lennon's assassination.
  • The Jordanaires do not appear on any version of this. They do appear on the flip side of the record, a song called "I Got Stung."
  • This was Elvis' last single to be released in the US in the 78 R.P.M. format. After this, all of his singles in the US were released as 45's. Only England, Canada and other countries continued releasing his singles as 78's for some years after this.
  • The song's second ascension to the chart's peak position in 2005 was the UK's 1000th #1 single.
  • Other cover versions include one by English Glam Rock band Mud, which reached #32 in the UK charts in 1975. Also Joe Cocker recorded the song under its original title of "One Night of Sin" as the title track of his 1989 album of the same name.

    Note to Self Lyrics

    Girl, you've been forgetting
Just how special you really are
And I try to remind you
    Sometimes I can't find you
But the truth is in your heart

So write a note to yourself

    Girl, don't beat yourself up
    Your best is good enough
    So pick the pen up

So write a note to yourself,
    A note to yourself
    And don't be cruel,
    'Cause things do happen
And you know it's not your fault
Don't cover your wounds with the salt

Girl, let me tell you what I see
    You've got to believe me
    You're a thing of beauty

Girl, put it in an envelope
    Put it in the post
It'll come back to your door

So write a note to yourself,
    A note to yourself
    And don't be cruel,
    'Cause things do happen
And you know it's not your fault
Don't cover your wounds with the salt

And write a note to yourself
And read the note to yourself

  • Bugg discussed the song in a video track-by-track: "I just wanted to use the lower end of my voice, try to mess around with that," he said. "It's about someone who was going through a tough time, I told this person how good they were, they weren't as bad as they thought they were, they just wouldn't listen, I thought of the idea of write a note to yourself."

    The Third Man Theme Lyrics

When a zither starts to play
    You'll remember yesterday
    In its haunting strain
    Vienna lives again
    Free and bright and gay
In your mind a sudden gleam
    Of a half forgotten dream
Seems to glimmer when you hear The Third Man Theme

Once again there comes to mind
    Someone that you left behind
    Love that somehow didn't last
In that happy city of the past
Does she still recall the dream
    That rapture so supreme
When first she heard the haunting third man theme?

Carnivals and carousels and Ferris wheels and parasols
The Danube nights, the dancing lights again will shine
    The zither's sweet refrain
    Keeps swirling in your brain
    Like new may wine
    Strauss waltzes, candle-glow
And the laughter of long ago
Fill the magic chords and make it seem like today

You never knew that you could be
    Enchanted by a melody
The years will never drive it out
    You don't know why
It's something you can't live without
You hear it in the twilight hush
And in the morning traffic rush
    A song that's always new
In your heart a part of you
Oh, shines so brightly when you hear the third man theme

When a zither starts to play
    You'll remember yesterday
    In its haunting strain
    Vienna lives again
    Free and bright and gay
In your mind a sudden gleam
    Of a well remembered dream
Seems to glimmer when you hear the third man theme

Once again there comes to mind
    Someone that you left behind
    Love that somehow didn't last
In that happy city of the past
Does she still recall the dream

    The Third Man Theme
  • Karas was an Austrian who played the zither. He was playing in a Vienna tavern when British director Carol Reed heard him and decided to have him score and play for the soundtrack of the film he was then shooting in Vienna, The Third Man. This was a brave decision by the director as Karas had absolutely no experience in composition or film scoring.
  • This was the first #1 in the USA for an Austrian.
  • Karas followed up with an album of his own pieces and other Viennese songs on Decca. He used his earnings from the film and recordings to buy a wine bar in Grinzing called "The Third Man."
  • In the UK, this was titled "The Harry Lime Theme" after the main character in the film.

    Bows & Arrows Lyrics

Hold onto your hearts, if you can
It's been the coldest year since records began
And now the sun is coming up again in no man's land

    So let's go, into tomorrow
    Together fighting
    We're bows and arrows!

You and me on the front line
    You and me, every time
It's always you and me, we're bows and arrows
    You!

Well I'm not waiting for no one, I'm waiting for you!
Well I'm not waiting for no one, I'm waiting for you!
It takes the two of us to, we'll make it through!

    So let's go, into tomorrow
    Together fighting
    We're bows and arrows!

You and me on the front line
    You and me, every time
It's always you and me, we're bows and arrows
    You!
You and me when the sun goes down
It's always you and me when the whip comes round
It's always you and me, we're bows and arrows
    You!

    We the people, created equal
    We the people, created equal
    We the people, created equal
    We the people, created equal
    We the people, created equal
    We the people, created equal
    We the people, created equal
    We the people, created equal
    We the people, created equal

And if that's true then we're not the only ones
And if that's true then we're not the only ones
And if that's true then we're not the only ones
And if that's true then we're not the only ones

You and me on the front line
    You and me, every time
It's always you and me, we're bows and arrows

  • This celebration of brotherhood was premiered on Rolling Stone's website on January 3, 2014. Speaking to the magazine about the song, frontman Ricky Wilson commented: "[Bassist] Simon Rix came up with the title when we were working in a studio under the McDonalds in Islington [London]. I liked the idea that bows and arrows are pretty useless on their own but when you get them together, they can be quite formidable."

"A bit like us lot, really," he added. "I love being in a band. It's daft to think you can do it alone. It's about not being afraid of emotion. It can be the strongest weapon we have. What's wrong with a load of blokes admitting they need each other? [It's] a sliver of hope through all the futility and loss on the record. You can also dance to it."

Sweet memories flashing very quickly by
Reminding me, giving me a reason why

I'll be there when I teach what I've been taught

You know we've told you before
But you didn't hear us then

    You didn't listen again

    Love Story (Vs Finally) Lyrics

    Love Story (Vs Finally)
  • Layo & Bushwacka! is the pseudonym of London DJs Layo Paskin and Matthew 'Bushwacka' Benjamin. The pair are the co-owner and resident DJ, respectively, at the End, a nightclub founded by the Shamen's Mr. C. Paskin's father is an architect and designed the club. Several singles and an album by Layo & Bushwacka! were released by End Recordings in late 1990s, as well as some tunes produced by Paskin and Mr. C as the Usual Suspects.
  • This song was originally released in 2002 by XL Recordings under the name "Love Story," charting at #4 on Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and #30 on the UK singles chart. Originally an untitled white label track, "Love Story" was given its name by its fans in Argentina, where as a mark of respect, clubbers sat down on the dance floor whenever it was played. Benjamin recalled in DJ Magazine: "People in Argentina and places started calling it 'Love Song,' and we ended up calling it 'Love Story' after a famous after-hours in Sao Paulo that we hung out in a little bit in our rock & roll days, shall we say. I'll never forget the first time I went there — in fact, there's a few times I went there I'll never forget, but that's another story!"
  • The song is a meandering journey through old Blues samples and Detroit beats. It borrows from the fast-picked bassline intro for Devo's 1977 tune "Mongoloid." "One of the most interesting things that came from that process was the Devo bassline, and a blues piano chord that sounded slightly out of tune," Benjamin recalled. "It was one chord off a record, and I sampled and played a copy of the bassline with a sample of this piano stab on top - that's where the whole hook came from."

The pair also threw in a Nina Simone sample from her song "Rags & Old Iron," which they'd also acquired earlier that day. "The funniest thing about that was that nobody could work out what she was saying, for such a long time," chuckled Benjamin. "Even I didn't know that she was saying 'Rags and old iron, rags and old iron, all she was buying was rags and old iron'."
  • "Love Story" was an instrumental, but XL Recordings wanted a vocal version. A remix single was released in January 2003, incorporating a vocal borrowed from American house duo The Kings of Tomorrow's "Finally," which topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in 2000. It proved to be a success, peaking at #8 in the UK. "We tried various things which weren't happening, but I'd done a DJ set with Layo at the first Creamfields in Argentina in 2002 or 2001 where I was DJing on three decks," Benjamin recalled to DJ Magazine. "On deck one I had 'Love Story' and on deck two an acapella of Kings Of Tomorrow 'Finally'. Deck three I had a techno loop record, and when I put these three things together, I've never seen a crowd go so crazy in my entire life! I was literally almost crying, thinking 'Oh my god, this is so amazing'."
†¨"'Love Story' and Kings Of Tomorrow 'Finally' were my girlfriend-at-the-time's two favourite tunes ever," Benjamin added. "So I went in my studio, re-recorded 'Love Story' with the acapella over the top, and said to her 'Here you go, happy birthday!' Then I said to XL that this was the only thing that was working, and the track came out and went Top 10."

Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me Lyrics

I've had my share of life's ups and downs
But fate's been kind, the downs have been few
I guess you could say that I've been lucky
Well, I guess you could say that it's all because of you

    [Chorus]
If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Oh, you'll be there between each line of pain and glory
Cause you're the Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me
Ah, you're the best thing that ever happened to me

Oh, there have been times when times were hard
But always somehow I made it, I made it through
Cause for every moment that I've spent hurting
There was a moment that I spent, ah, just loving you

    [Chorus]

Weatherly had his own solo #11 US hit the same year with "The Need to Be." He was an All-American quarterback before choosing songwriting as a career.
  • Country singer Ray Price was the first to have a hit with this - his version went to #1 on the Country charts. Producers Kenny Kerner and Richie Wise heard Price's version and brought it to Gladys Knight And The Pips. They produced Knight's previous hit, "I've Got to Use My Imagination," and used the same rhythm section on this.

I went to make the vivisection

Points to the gaze of the Blue Eyed Hexe

    Blue eyed hexe
    Blue eyed hexe
    Hexe hexe

I tried to hide but I was not able
Shirt was opened down to her navel
Felt a burning in my solar plexus
Give me the pow-wow, give me the hexe

    Blue eyed hexe
    Blue eyed hexe
    Hexe hexe
    Blue eyed hexe

I called the Nixes from The Queets
Spirits take me through the straits
Closed my eyes to stop her vexing
Still the burning of the blue eyed hexe

  • This was released as the lead single from the Pixies' EP2. The songs were recorded during October 2012 at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales and were produced by Gil Norton. They were made available to fans via a limited edition 10" vinyl, which came complete with a black patch-stitched hoodie. Alternatively, fans could simply download the EP via Pixies website.
  • Vocalist Black Francis explained the song's meaning: "It's a tale from the northwestern part of the UK," he said, "and it's a witch-woman kind of a song. That's what a 'hexe' is, and ours is a blue-eyed hexe."

A Hexe is a German word for a witch. The German medieval metal band Subway to Sally once recorded a song titled "Die Hexe."
  • Guitarist Joey Santiago said of his contribution: "Gil wanted a swagger, he wanted the guitar solo to sound like you're going to have sex with this blue-eyed hexe."
  • The song was originally teased by Frank Black in a Vine clip in August 2013 and debuted by the band the following month during an unannounced show at Los Angeles' Echo.
  • The lyric "Nixes from the Queets" combines German mythology with the name of a river in Washington state. Black Francis told Mojo magazine that Pixies songs exist on "an abstract plain."

How Deep Is Your Love Lyrics

I know your eyes in the morning sun
I feel you touch me in the pouring rain
And the moment that you wander far from me
I want to feel you in my arms again
And you come to me on a summer breeze
Keep me warm in your love, then you softly leave
And it's me you need to show

How Deep Is Your Love, how deep is your love
    How deep is your love?
    I really mean to learn
'Cause we're living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they all should let us be
We belong to you and me

    I believe in you
You know the door to my very soul
You're the light in my deepest, darkest hour
You're my savior when I fall
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do
And it's me you need to show

How deep is your love, how deep is your love
    How deep is your love?
    I really mean to learn
'Cause we're living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they all should let us be

    How Deep Is Your Love
  • The Bee Gees wrote this for the American singer Yvonne Elliman. Robert Stigwood, who produced the movie Saturday Night Fever, insisted the Bee Gees perform it themselves for the soundtrack. Elliman did sing "If I Can't Have You," which was written by The Bee Gees and included on the soundtrack. That song was also a #1 hit in the US.
  • This won the 1977 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Group.
  • This was a massive hit in the US. It was #1 for three weeks and stayed in the Top 10 for 17 weeks, which was a record at the time. The song was also a huge hit on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it spent six weeks at #1 - more than any other Bee Gees song. When Billboard listed their top 100 Adult Contemporary song of all time in 2011, "How Deep Is Your Love" came in at #13.
  • In 1996 Take That covered this for their last single release until their comeback in 2006. It topped the UK chart. Gary Barlow (in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh) commented on their remake, "We wanted to prove that we could still do a cover version this far on in our career and do it very well."
  • This was the first of four new songs on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack to top the US Hot 100. It was released as a single before the film or the soundtrack were issued, and rose to the top spot a week after the film debuted.
  • A songwriter/antiques dealer in Illinois named Ronald Selle sued the Bee Gees, claiming a song he wrote in 1975 called "Let It End" was the basis for "How Deep Is Your Love." The case went to a jury in 1983. The Bee Gees claimed that they had never heard "Let It End," and there was no evidence that they did (that song was never released - Selle made a home recording that he had sent to music publishers). The case was based on the similarities between the songs, and an expert witness for Selle - a musicologist named Arrand Parsons - tried to convince the jury through technical analysis of the notes that the Bee Gees plagiarized the song. The jury bought it, and ruled that the Bee Gees did copy Selle's song. The judge, however, nullified the verdict. Selle later appealed, and was once again rebuffed.

The case underscored the problem of juries making judgments on music, and it led to a landmark ruling that "striking similarities" between songs was not enough to prove plagiarism (something George Harrison would have appreciated). Henceforth, a songwriter had to prove that the infringing party actually heard the song before the case could move forward. This is one reason why music publishers and songwriters refuse to hear most unsolicited material.
  • In Daniel Rachel's The Art of Noise: Conversations with Great Songwriters, Robin Gibb explained the unique sound he and Barry created by combining their voices: "If you listen to 'How Deep is Your Love' you think it's a single voice but it's me and Barry singing in unison, which produces a nice sound, as it does on 'New York Mining Disaster.' There's a sound that we do, it's almost like a single voice, but it isn't, and it's not double-tracked, it's two voices together. It's something that we've done a lot."

I'm not together, and you know it's true.
My bits all wander in the trees.
And if I ever seem a little strange,
    Would you excuse me please?

I said I’m human, but you know I lie.
    I'm only visiting this shore.
I'll soon be leaving in the outbound tide
I pray again we will meet.

Maybe best you go on home.

But, in this case, let's just say that we had done 'Gigantic' as the closer for many years at our reunion shows and it worked really well. "It was my attempt to come up with another song that would ' musically, emotionally and psychologically ' sit in the same place that 'Gigantic' has sat," he continued. "Not that I could ever replace that song: you write songs and they come out the way they come out. So perhaps it can be said that this song fills the emotional niche that 'Gigantic' occupied, another show-closer. I think the lyric alludes to that, the fact that it's the end of the night, the end of something. And a separation if you will, between the band and the audience. So I guess it's kind of a goodbye song, or really more of a 'good night' song."
  • The song's music video was directed by Josh Frank, who co-wrote the Pixies oral history Fool The World. The clip stars Mel Rodriguez as the only person left on a deserted world. The American actor is best known for his roles as Migo Salazar in Running Wilde, Sgt. Nunez in Community and Patsy De La Serda in Getting On. He also had a brief appearance as Officer Morales in the 2002 film Panic Room.

    Philomena Lyrics

I've been a wild wild rover
    Sailed all over the sea
But this thing that makes me wonder
Has made a fool of me

For it took me from my childhood
    Underneath the stars and skies
And I still hear the wind
Whistling through the wild wood, whispering goodbye

    It's home boys home
    She's home boys home
    No matter
    Where I roam

    If you see my mother
Please give her all of my love
For she has a heart of gold there
    As good as God above

    If you see my mother
    Tell her I'm keeping fine
Tell her that I love her
And I'll try and write sometime

    Everything Is Embarrassing Lyrics

    (I know you're trying)
Everything and nothing always haunts me
    I know you're trying, I know you're trying
Waiting for your moment to fall on me
I saw you trying, I saw you trying

Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother
Telling me that basically you're not looking out for me
    Everything is true to me
Never words where you would see
Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother

    (I know you're trying, I know you're trying)
Hurts so bad I don't know what you want from me
You know I'm trying, you know I'm trying
And now we're hanging on by a heartbeat
    You know I'm trying
    I was always trying

Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother
Telling me that basically you're not looking out for me
    Everything is true to me
Never words where you would see
Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother

I've been hating everything, everything that could have been
    Could have been my anything
    Now everything's embarrassing

Acting like it's nothing, such a bore
I saw the truth and I just can't ignore
You're trying to hold the heart that can't be stored
Say, I tried to give my best before
You wouldn't have the chance to give me more
You're only one step closer to the door

Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother
Telling me that basically you're not looking out for me
    Everything is true to me
Never words where you would see
Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother

I've been hating everything, everything that could have been
    Could have been my anything
    Now everything's embarrassing

Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother
Telling me that basically you're not looking out for me
    Everything is true to me
Never words where you would see
Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother

I've been hating everything, everything that could have been
    Could have been my anything
    Now everything's embarrassing

    Everything Is Embarrassing
  • This Dance-Pop track originated with a demo sent by British songwriter Dev Hynes (Solange's "Losing You," Mutya Keisha Siobhan's "Flatline") which was inspired by a failed relationship; Ferreira then modified the original lyrics and structure along with her producer Ariel Rechtshaid.
  • The song was released as a single in the UK on April 14, 2013 and included on the 2013 Now That's What I Call Music! 46 compilation album in the US.
  • Ferreria and Hynes had been friends but the pair fell out over comments she made as to whose song it was. Ferreira told The Guardian: "He wrote the demo, and I've always given him credit, all I said was that the song wouldn't have been made without me on it. I think it's a shame because Dev's really talented and he's my friend. Well, was my friend – it's kinda sad that we can't be [friends] now."
  • Ferreira sung this on her debut television performance, during the January 7, 2013 episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
  • The track was critically acclaimed, with several publications and music blogs listing it among their favorites of 2012. New York magazine named it the best song of the year saying it, "has feathery grace and weary melodies, magic and sparkle, and feels as warm as curling up next to the radiator on a cold day."
