Black and White Lyrics

The ink is black
The page is white
Together we learn to read and write
The child is black
The child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight
The beautiful sight

And now a child can understand
That this is the law of all the land
All the land

The world is black
The world is white
It turns by day and then by night
The child is black
The child is white
Together they grow to see the light
To see the light

And now at last we plainly see
We'll have a dance of liberty
The world is black
The world is white
It turns by day and then by night
The child is black
The child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight
The beautiful sight

The world is black
The world is white
It turns by day and the by night
The child id black
The child is white
Together they grow to see the light
To see the light

Black and White
  • An influential American folk singer named Earl Robinson wrote this in 1954 with lyricist David Arkin (who is the father of actor Alan Arkin). The song is about racism, and was inspired by a US Supreme Court ruling that segregation in public schools is illegal. The original folk song (but not Three Dog Night's version) includes the line, "Their robes were black, their heads were white" which refers to the judges.
  • The Jamaican reggae group Greyhound recorded this in 1971; their version made #6 in the UK. Greyhound went on to have two more hits: a cover of Henry Mancini's "Moon River" and another message song called "I Am What I Am," which was a plea for recognition in a white-dominated society.
  • When Three Dog Night recorded this, it came at a time when civil rights was a big issue in America. The message of racial equality was emphasized by their use of a children's choir in the repeated chorus during the closing moments of the song.
  • Other artists to record this include Gregory Isaacs, Freddie McGregor and Inner Circle.
  • Three Dog Night had three lead vocalists: Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron and Cory Wells. Hutton sang lead on this track.

    Move Lyrics

    Oh, start it up.

Hey, like to ride around and listen to that steel guitar sound, on whiskey bent and hell-bound with a little nice set brunette from FLA.
Wheels turning winding down in the pines, KC lights lighting up tonight.
Iced down and the cold cool beer calling my name.

    Hey, like my pontoons.
Cuttin that liquid glass so smooth.
On the lake forty HP every noon,
    girls standing on the bow-wow,
keep it tween the banks. Making my way, not a cloud in sky,
inline flow shades on my eyes.
Aw hell, got the JBS so loud you can't think.

    Yeah, kick back, oh,
    one hand on the wheel.
Give it a little bit of juice.
Life going by so slow and easy.
Don't that just make you want to Move?

Aw, turtle wax on, wax off.
Good year serving in the armor-all.
Tin so dark ticks off the lawn.
Got the chrome slicker than a nickle,
    now we're ready to roll.
Moon quick stop top off the tank.
Baby wants a little something cold to drink.
Now we slip down the strip like we're on Friday night patrol.

Yeah, kick back, one hand on the wheel.
Give it a little bit of juice.
Life going by so slow and easy.
Don't that just make you want to move?
Yeah, don't that make you want to move?

    Weekend, speeding in the thirty-five.
Rolling round town, got nothing but time.
Baby kissing on me, running off the road.
Trying to keep it cool, rolling with the flow.

Kick back, oh, one hand on the wheel.
Give it a little bit of juice.
Life going by so slow and easy.
Don't that just make you want to kick back, oh, one hand on the wheel.
Give it a little bit of juice.
Life going by so slow and easy.

    Move
  • This Arlis Albriton, Brandon Kinney and Ben Daniel penned song mixes Country and Rock with a catchy melody. Vocalist Matt Thomas told Taste of Country : "That actually was a song that was pitched to us right after we signed the deal and I listened to it a couple of times and Bennie from the label really liked it. And after listening to it, and really after we learned it, that's when I really fell in love with it and the guitar lick. That actually is like exactly Parmalee music."

The Evil That Men Do Lyrics

Love is a razor and I walked the line on that silver blade
Slept in the dust with his daughter,
Her eyes red with the slaughter of innocence
But I will pray for her, I will call her name out loud
I would bleed for her, if I could only see her now
Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Balancing on a ledge, living on a razor's edge
Balancing on a ledge, you know, you know

The Evil That Men Do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on

Circle of fire my baptism of joy at an end it seems
The seventh lamb slain, the book of life opens before me
And I will pray for you, someday I may return
Don't you cry for me, beyond is where I learn

Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Living on a razor's edge, you know, you know

The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on

Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Living on a razor's edge, you know

The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on, yeah
The evil that men do lives on and on

    When the music stops,
I walk you to your door
    And we say goodnight,
    Like a thousand times before

    This is the night (night),

    I Need You Tonight
  • After serving as frontman for the J. Geils Band from their formation in 1967, Peter Wolf left the band in 1983, launching a solo career with his 1984 album Lights Out. Following, the title track, it was Wolf's second single.

The song is about a man carrying on an affair with a woman he can only see occasionally but can no longer wait for. Thanks to the clips for the J. Geils Band songs Centerfold and Freeze-Frame, Wolf was a familiar face on MTV, and his video for "I Need You Tonight" got significant airplay. In the clip, Wolf plays a man smitten with a married woman whose husband is a wealthy and dangerous gangster.
  • Wolf wrote this song with Paul Bliss, whose other credits include "Heart Attack" for Olivia Newton-John and "Emotion" for Barbra Streisand.

    Last Cup Of Sorrow Lyrics

    Last Cup Of Sorrow
  • The overall theme is to let go of conflicts or problems of the past and just "Get on your way." It could also imply that hanging on to your past sorrows like divorce, breakups, materialism, and unrealized goals can eventually leave you in a crippled state of confusion later in life; hence the verse, "Everything you know and never knew... will run through your fingers just like sand." Finishing your "last" cup of sorrow is a way of moving into the future and leaving your problems where they should be - in the past.
  • The video, in many ways, is very different from the song's contents. Directed by Joseph Kahn, it features lead singer Mike Patton dressed as a private investigator who's hired to shadow a beautiful blonde played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. The video is based on the Alfred Hitchcock movie Vertigo, and features a scene in which Leigh's character has the bejesus scared out of her upon seeing the band's drummer coming into the bell tower of a cathedral. In the movie, the original character sees the silhouette of a nun in the bell tower, mistakenly taking it for a ghost or apparition, and jumps to her death.

    The Hurting Lyrics

    Is it an horrific dream
    Am I sinking fast
Could a person be so mean
    As to laugh and laugh
    On my own
    Could you ease my load
    Could you see my Pain
    Could you please explain
    The Hurting

    Could you understand a child
    When he cries in Pain
Could you give him all he needs
Or do you feel the same
    All along
    You've been told you're wrong
    When you felt it right
    And you're left to fight
    The hurting

Get in line with the things you know
    Feel the Pain
    Feel the sorrow
Touch the hurt and don't let go
Get in line with the things you know
    Learn to cry
    Like a baby

    The Hurting
  • This is the title track of The Hurting, a concept album about the writings of psychologist Arthur Janov, the evangelist of suppressed childhood trauma and developer of primal scream therapy. Roland Orzabel explained to Mojo magazine December 2013 why he and his Tears for Fears partner Curt Smith connected with Janov: "Curt and I were council house kids," he said. "Not easy upbringings. There was illness with Curt's father. Illness, and mental illness with mine, and domestic violence between him and my mother. Both middle children of three boys. We identified with Janov's beliefs, that the child is the victim, in a sense, and all the traumas of your childhood, even pre-natal, form your personality and are the cause of neurosis and depression in later life."
  • Primal scream therapy was a type of physiotherapy in which patients, often in groups, were encouraged to scream and behave violently to relive birth and the sufferings of infancy. The treatment was named by Janov in his 1970 book Primal Scream. John Lennon and Yoko Ono were among the well-known experimenters and several of the songs the former Beatle wrote in the early 1970s were inspired by his experience of the therapy, including "Mother" and "Working Class Hero."

    We Don't Talk Anymore Lyrics

Used to think that life was sweet.
Used to think we were so complete.
    I can't believe you'd throw it away.

Used to feel we had it made.
Used to feel we could sail away.
Can you imagine how I feel today.
Well it seems a long time ago you were the lonely one.
Now it comes to letting go you are the only one.
Do you know what you've done.

It's so funny how We Don't Talk Anymore.
It's so funny why we don't talk anymore.
But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep.
it's so funny how we don't talk anymore.

Well it really doesn't matter to me.
I guess you're leaving was meant to be.
It's down to you now you want to be free.
Well I hope you know which way to go you're on your own again.
And don't come crying to me when you're the lonely one.
    Remember what you've done.

It's so funny how we don't talk anymore.
It's so funny why we don't talk anymore
But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep.
It's so funny how we don't talk anymore.

But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep.

    We Don't Talk Anymore
  • This was written by Alan Tarney, who wrote several other Cliff Richard hits including "My Pretty One" in 1987 and its follow up "Some People."
  • Cliff Richard was born Harry Webb in Lucknow, India of British parents. He joined the Dick Teague Skiffle group in 1957, leaving in 1958 with drummer Terry Smart to form Harry Webb & the Drifters and later in the year he was renamed Cliff Richard. He auditioned for the producer Norrie Paramour (who sadly died while this was at the top of the charts) in August 1958 and signed with EMI, releasing his debut single "Move It," which rose to #2 in the UK charts. His backing group in 1958 featured Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Ian Samwell and Terry Smart. The Drifters renamed themselves The Shadows in 1959 to avoid confusion with the US R&B act of the same name. He went on to become Britain's most successful home-grown solo act, with 13 #1s and appearances with Band Aid 2 and The Young Ones on other #1 hits. When "Saviours Day" hit #1 in the UK in 1990 he became the first artist to have #1s in the UK in 5 consecutive decades and he nearly made it six as "Millennium Prayer" was #1 in December 1999. In 1995 he received a knighthood.
  • In the mid-1960s, Richard became a Christian and since then he has recorded a number of inspirational albums. He is arguably the most well known Christian in the British music business and every December he releases a Christmas-themed single, which rarely fails to reach the UK Top 20.
  • Alan Tarney (from 1000 UK #1 Hits
  • by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh): '"If you play C,F and G7, you would normally expect to return to C, but I chose to leave it unresolved and go somewhere else. There's a lot of that in We Don't Talk Anymore and it keeps the suspense going. Cliff lost his place at the end, but he is such a brilliant improviser that he kept going. When he sings the bit about losing sleep, he doesn't know where he is."
  • This was Cliff Richard's biggest selling hit worldwide. He was a sensation in Great Britain, but never made a major impact in the United States. This was released when his career in America was at its peak.

    Rhymin & Stealin Lyrics

Because mutiny on the bounty's what we're all about
I'm gonna board your ship and turn it on out
No soft sucker with a parrot on his shoulder
'Cause I'm bad gettin' bolder, cold getting colder
Terrorizing suckers on the seven seas
And if you've got beef, you'll get capped in the knees
We got sixteen men on a dead man's chest
And I shot those suckers and I'll shoot the rest

Most illingest be-boy - I got that feeling
'Cause I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'

Snatching gold chains, vicking pieces of eight
I got your money and your honey and the fly name plate
We got wenches on the benches, and bitties with titties
Housing all girlies from city to city
One for all and all for one
Taking out M.C.'s with a big shotgun
All for one and one for all
Because the Beastie Boys have gone A.W.O.L.
Friggin' in the riggin' and cuttin' your throat
Big biting suckers getting thrown in the moat
We got maidens and wenches, man they're on the ace
Captain Bly is gonna die when we break his face

Most illingest be-boy, I got that feeling

Torching and crackin' and rhymin' and stealin'
Robbin' and raping, busting two in the ceiling
I'm wheeling', I'm dealin', I'm drinking, not thinking
Never cower, never shower, and I'm always stinking
Yo ho ho and a bottom glass boat
And when my girlie shakes her hips, she sure gets funky
Skirt chasing, free basing, killing every village
We drink and rob and rhyme and pillage

Most illingest be-boy, I got that feeling
'Cause I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'

I've been drinking my rum, a def son of a gun
I fought the law and I cold won
Black Beard's weak, Moby Dick's on the tick
'Cause I pull out the jammy and squeeze off six
My pistol is loaded, I shot Betty Crocker
Deliver Colonel Sanders down to Davey Jones' locker
Rhymin' and stealin' in a drunken state
And I'll be rockin' my rhymes all the way to Hell's gate

    Rhymin & Stealin
  • Beastie Boys opened their Licensed to Ill album with this track, which samples John Bonham's drum introduction from Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks." Producer Rick Rubin had previously explored the crossover between Rock and Hip-Hop in his work with Run–D.M.C., most famously with the cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way"."

"Rhymin & Stealin" also samples Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" and The Clash version of "I Fought The Law."
  • Beastie Boys were the first artists to sample the drums on "When The Levee Breaks," but many others have gone on to do so, including Björk on "Army Of Me," Eminem on "Kim," Enigma on "Return To Innocence" and Sophie B. Hawkins on "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover." The Beasties returned to the Zeppelin tune again for their 1989 Paul's Boutique track, "B-Boy Bouillabaisse."
  • The group didn't have a sampler when they recorded Licensed to Ill, so getting the Led Zeppelin sample required recording it to a reel-to-reel tape machine and looping it.
  • Like many of their songs, this one finds the Beasties rapping about a life of crime, with plenty of historical references along the way. Ali Baba, Captain Bly and Davey Jones all get a mention, and fittingly considering the John Bonham drum sample, so does Moby Dick.

Common love, seems just like a dream
    It's no mystery to me
Fill me within when we're together
    Oh baby can't you see
I'd like to feel the passion
To the Point Of No Return
I will be in full reaction
I want to take you in my arms
You're taking me to the point of no return
    (Uh uh)
You're taking me to the point of no return
It's so long, life of denial
The love you give to me
    And when you smile
It warms my heart and me
    Oh baby can't you see
I like to feel the passion to the point of no return
Oh baby, I will be in full reaction
I want to take you in my arms
You're taking me to the point of no return
You're taking me to the point of no return

I want to be with you baby
I want to be by your side
I want to be with you baby
I want to love you every evening

You're taking me to the point of no return

    Point Of No Return
  • In 1984, Miami-based producer/songwriter Lewis A. Martinee formed an all-female pop-dance trio called Exposé. He hired Aléjandra Lorenzo, Sandra Casanas, and Laurie Miller to be in the group. In 1985, three women recorded this song (with Lorenzo singing lead) which became a club-dance hit. The next year, they released another dance single entitled "Exposed to Love" (also with Lorenzo on lead), and then attracted attention of Arista Records. Just before the group began work on an album for Arista, Martineé replaced all three members with Jeanette Jurado, Gioia Bruno, and Ann Curless. Shortly after the release of their debut album Exposure and a new single in early 1987, the new lineup of Exposé recorded and released a version of this with Jurado on lead; it was the second version of "Point of No Return" that became a national hit, reaching US #5.
  • While the first few thousand copies of Exposure contained the original version of this song, the rest had the version recorded by the new lineup of Expose.

  • This slice of Synth-Pop finds Lauren Mayberry trying to figure out a relationship that is hanging in the balance as she desperately urges her companion to love her or leave her. She croons:

    "Carved.
    Earth.
    Cold
Hiding from you in this skin.
    So.
    Old."

The song was originally the title track of Chvrches debut EP. It was subsequently released as the second single from the Scottish trio's first studio album The Bones of What You Believe peaking at #91 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • Mayberry told Coup De Main magazine how the Chvrches trio pen their songs. "It's a three-part writing process - everyone's equally involved in all the writing," she explained. "Normally we'll start with a sample or a drumbeat, or a synth sound or something like that, and that will spark the initial idea. And then we'll write an instrumental sketch of a song, and then we put on a nonsense vocal melody, which is always my favourite bit because it obviously sounds amazing. Then the lyrics go on last, at the end."

    Trophies Lyrics

    Yeah

Had hit records on my demo
Did y'all boys not get the memo
I do not stay at the Intercontinental
And anything I got is not a rental, I own that mothafucka
Figured out this shit, it's simple
My stock been going up like a crescendo
A bunch of handshakes from the fakes
But nigga I do not want to be friends though
I told y'all mofuckers, man, this sh-t is not a love song
This is a fuck a stripper on a mink rug song
This a fuck them boys forever, hold a grudge song
Pop some fucking champagne in the tub song
    Nigga “just because† song

    What's the move?
Can I tell truth? If I was doing this for you
Then I have nothing left to prove, nah
    This for me, though
I'm just tryna stay alive and take care of my people
And they don't have no award for that
    Trophies
    Trophies
And they don't have no award for that
Shit don't come with trophies, ain't no envelopes to open
I just do it 'cause I'm ‘sposed to, nigga

Bitch I go to Dreams with a suitcase
I got my whole country on a new wave
She like, “I heard all your niggas stay where you stay†
House so big I haven't seen them boys in two days
Bitch, I use a walkie talkie just to get a beverage
I saw my parents split up right after the wedding
That taught my ass to stay committed, fuck a credit
Bitch check the numbers, I'm the one who really get it
I told y'all mo'fuckas, man, this shit is not a love song
This a doing me and only God can judge song
I do not know what the fuck you thought it was song
Pop some fucking champagne in the tub song
    Nigga, “just because† song

    What's the move?
Can I tell truth? If I was doing this for you
Then I have nothing left to prove, nah
    This for me, though
I'm just tryna stay alive and take care of my people
And they don't have no award for that
    Trophies
    Trophies
And they don't have no award for that
Shit don't come with trophies, ain't no envelopes to open
I just do it 'cause I'm ‘sposed to, nigga

    Trophies
  • This bombastic, horn-heavy celebratory number was first previewed as an instrumental in a short trailer for Drake's Nothing Was the Same album. Drizzy's DJ also shared a snippet with fans during the rapper's October 2013 Would You Like a Tour? stop in Brooklyn. The song didn't make the final cut for the record as the Toronto MC couldn't finish it in time, but he eventually made the tune available on December 29th. Speaking with Jian Ghomenshi on Canada's CBC Radio about Nothing Was The Same, Drake said that rather than recording a huge amount of tracks, only to slowly whittle them down, he takes the opposite approach. "I'm not a guy that does 40 songs for a project and picks 13 of them," said the Toronto MC. "If I'm gonna go as far as to track over a beat, I usually have the utmost faith in it that it'll end up somewhere."

"I don't really dispose of too many songs," Drake added. "I have stuff that didn't make this album definitely, but I don't have 20 or 30 of them — I have four or five records that just didn't make it because I was trying to keep it concise and whatever I end up doing with those, I'll do with them."
  • Chauncey "Hit-Boy" Hollis (Kanye West and Jay-Z's "Niggas in Paris," Rihanna's "Watch N' Learn," Nicki Minaj's "I Am Your Leader") supplied the thunderous beat. The producer originally sent the instrumental to Childish Gambino but the rapper didn't use it so he dispatched the beat instead to Drake. Hagler and Drizzy's go-to man, Noah "40" Shebib, also have production credits.
