Who am I?

Who are you?

Why can't I get it straight?

Shaft!

We can't let you,

I'll get a new one, then!
I take a look, a look around, gas limited.
I take a look around,
I tell myself I live again!

    Messed Up Kids Lyrics

Johnny deals a bit of blow on the side
Thinks that he's invincible, hates a fight
Jenny walks the streets alone she was fine
But she got kicked out of her home in hard times

The Messed Up Kids are on the corner
    With no money
They sell their time they sell their drugs
    They sell their body
And everywhere I see a sea of empty pockets
Beautiful girls with eyes so dark within their sockets
    So far away
    It's a washed out Saturday
    The sky all pastel shades
    Under breeze block palisades

    Lights are smashed
The streets are closed in the town
Places no one really goes to hang around
Gave up on us long ago with no hope
All you hear's the cold wind blow and get stoned

The messed up kids are on the corner
    With no money
They sell their time they sell their drugs
    They sell their body
And everywhere I see a sea of empty pockets
Beautiful girls with eyes so dark within their sockets
    So far away
    It's a washed out Saturday
    The sky all pastel shades

    Messed Up Kids
  • Bugg wrote this song in Nashville with Raconteurs singer and guitarist Brendan Benson. It finds him singing about returning home to Clifton, Nottingham after all his success. "That song is written from a different perspective of going back," Bugg told The Sun. "When I go back to Clifton the main concerns are money and finding ways to pay bills and buy things, It was just very strange for me after all that's happened."

"There's a lot of guilt," he added. "Why should I be able to go to all these lovely places? The more you start earning and the better you do it seems the more people want to give you things. I've been given clothes, an expensive Ralph Lauren leather jacket. I'm hardly going to say no. I buy things and people ask, 'Why did you buy it?' It's simple. Because I wanted to and because I now can."
  • Bugg said in the lead up to making Shangri-La that he wouldn't be able to write about the council estates and characters of Nottingham any more now that he's touring the world and selling thousands of albums. While this is true for the majority of the album, this song finds him singing about teenage drug dealers and prostitutes in his home town. "I'll never forget where I'm from," he told NME. "I'm speaking about it from a place that I really knew, but now I'm on the outside looking in. There's a feeling of guilt involved that people live like that and that's the way it is. People living on this estate and trying to make a living and there I am. I got to live my dream."

    New American Classic Lyrics

    You've got to get better,
Said, it's all in your head,
We could live through these letters
    Or forget it altogether,
See the months they don't matter
Its the days I can't take
When the hours move to minutes
    And I'm seconds away,

Just ask the question come untie the knot
    Say you won't care,
    Say you won't care,
Retrace the steps, as if we forgot,
    Say you won't care,
    Say you won't care,
You try to avoid it, but there's not a doubt
And there's one thing I can do nothing about

When all that we need is just a reaction,
Its too much to ask for when there's no attraction anymore,
Chasing our dreams is just a distraction
I want to remember what I know
    That I can't go back,

Just ask the question, come untie the knot
    Say you won't care
    Say you won't care
Retrace the steps as if we forgot
    Say you won't care
    Say you won't care
You try to avoid it (try to avoid it)
    But there's not a doubt
And there's one thing I can do nothing

There's one thing I can do nothing about

Just ask the question (just ask the question)
    Come untie the knot
    Say you won't care
    Say you won't care

  • This tune starts: "I see your picture in magazines every day. You're beautiful but I must look away." Bugg told Q magazine that the subject of the song is supermodel Cara Delevigne. Bugg had a short relationship with her, and after their breakup, tabloid gossip was that the singer was devastated. He explained: "People were making stories about it so I made mine from it."
  • The song was dropped from the final tracklisting of Shangri-La and replaced by "Kitchen Table." "Not because of the subject," said Bugg, "but when the final mixes came back it was one of them that didn't seem as strong."

I recall when I used to come home never had a dime
But Lord I always had a good time
And I recall drinkin' wine with one of my friends
Lord, I can't go back again

    [Chorus)]
Am I Losin' my own way back home
Am I losin' a good friend that I've known
Am I losin' won't you tell me how I've sinned
Why am I losin one of my bets friends

And I recall this friend of mine I knew so well
It goes to show Lord you just can't tell
Now my friend won't talk to me Let me tell you why
He thinks I 've changed because of a dollar sign

    [Chorus]

And its so strange when you get just a little money
Your so called friends want to act just a little funny
    They'll blame you

But I'm not the one that's here to blame
Its you my friend that's really changed
Its a shame, such a shame
    Am I losin' once again

Why these things happen, Lord I don't understand
But Lord it can sure hurt a man
Why my friend won't take me as I am
'Cause your friend Lord is the most important thing

    Am I Losin'
  • This is about drummer Bob Burns leaving the band due to the stress of heavy touring. After release of the album, Lynyrd Skynyrd started a 90-day 61-concert tour called "The Torture Tour." Ed King walked out during this tour.
  • An acoustic version is featured on Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1994 album Endangered Species.
  • Skynyrd is one band that's familiar with hardship. Al Kooper relates in his memoir Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards that, while he was still in the early stages of taking over management of the band, Ronnie Van Zant phoned him at 2 a.m. This was to report the news that Lynyrd Skynyrd's equipment van had been stolen. They had a tour to fulfill and no equipment. So Van Zant asked Kooper to wire them $5,000 on the spot. Kooper immediately obliged, to which Van Zant remarked, "Al, you just bought yourself a band for five thousand dollars!"

Yeah girl, I just had me,
One hell of a work week.
    It's been driving me crazy,
    Not enough of you baby.
    Yeah and I been a-thinkin',
    'Bout breakin' in the weekend
    Not doin' any sleepin'
So get in, let's take a ride

And baby let's go, take a dirt road
Kick it back, find a good song on the radio,
'Til we get lost in a sunset falling
Lay a blanket by the creek
Where the moon peeks over that sycamore tree
And there won't be anyone watching
    No one watching
Now there ain't nothing wrong, baby, you and I
Gettin' down to some Up All Night

    Now don't forget your flip-flops
We can stop by the quick stop
Get some jerky and a twelve pack
No tellin' when we'll be back
I got a cooler in the truck bed
I couple towels when we get wet
Cause you know we're gonna jump in
And take a little midnight swim

So baby let's go, take a dirt road
Kick it back, find a good song on the radio,
'Til we get lost in a sunset falling
Lay a blanket by the creek
Where the moon peeks over that sycamore tree
And there won't be anyone watching
    No one watching
Now there ain't nothing wrong, baby, you and I
Gettin' down to some up all night

Come Monday, I'll be back to workin' and savin'
    But until then, yeah

Baby let's go, take a dirt road
Kick it back, find a good song on the radio,
'Til we get lost in a sunset falling
Lay a blanket by the creek
Where the moon peeks over that sycamore tree
    There won't be anyone watching
    No one watching
Now there ain't nothing wrong, baby, you and I

  • The second single released by Jon Pardi was written by the Country music artist with Bart Butler (Thomas Rhett's "Make Me Wanna") and Brett Beavers, who has produced and co-written many of Dierks Bentley's songs. Pardi opened for Bentley shortly after signing on with Capitol Records in 2010.
  • The video was directed by the Edde Brothers, who also shot the clip for Pardi's debut single, "Missin' You Crazy." It was filmed outside Nashville near Montgomery Bell State Park and includes the singer's friends as well as his dog, Cowboy.
  • The song finds Pardi singing about taking his girl in his truck down a dirt road. "I had the title lying around. I had the drum loop before they were standard issue in a Country song," he told Billboard magazine. "There's no deep thought in it. It's all fun."

You Know How I Do Lyrics

So sick, so sick of being tired.
And oh so tired of being sick.
    We're both such magnificent liars.
So crush me baby, I'm all ears.
So obviously desperate, so desperately obvious.
I'll give in one more time and feed you stupid
Lines all about "cleaning up my act"

We won't stand for hazy eyes anymore.(4X)

So sick, so sick of being tired.
And oh so tired of being sick.
Willing and ready to prove the worst
    Of everything you said about.
So obviously desperate, so desperately obvious.
So good at setting bad examples.
Listen, chic, I've had all I can handle.

We won't stand for hazy eyes anymore. (4X)

Think of all the fun you had.
The finest line divides a night well spent from a waste of time.
Think of all the days you spent alone with just
Your T.V. set and "I can barely smile" (2X)

    Let's go
He's smoked out in the back of the van, says he's held up with holding on and on and on. (2X)

I'm driving home tonight, catching all red lights
That's alright cause I don't want to be alone
There's nobody waitin' there, cold and empty bed
Words I wished Id said come on the radio

Ooh, oh, oh, and I don't know why I do this to myself
Ooh, oh, oh, I know you're with someone else

But in my mind were Somewhere In My Car
And it's raining hard on the streetlight glow
You got your lips on mine, its gasoline on fire
I never will forget, you grabbed my shirt and pulled it over my head
And your fingertips slide up and down my back
Breathin' hard, steamin' up the glass
Id give anything if I could bring you back home

So, I've been sleeping til noon in the same bedroom
Where I once held you and its breaking my heart
I should take down all those pictures from my wall
Promises we made won't fill this empty space

Ooh, oh, oh, and I dont know why I just cant let you go
Ooh, oh, oh, I know youre never coming back

But in my mind were somewhere in my car
And it's raining hard on the streetlight glow
You got your lips on mine, its gasoline on fire
I never will forget, you grabbed my shirt and pulled it over my head

    Somewhere In My Car
  • This is the opening track of Keith Urban's Fuse album. Longtime producer Dann Huff had been in charge of the singer's previous five LP's, but the singer used ten separate producers to create the sounds on this release including Mike Elizondo (Eminem, Pink, Fiona Apple), Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Little Big Town, The Wallflowers), Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift, The Band Perry) and Stargate (Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ne-Yo). Huff did co-produce "Somewhere in My Car," as well as playing guitar on the song.
  • Multi-instrumentalist Matt Mahaffey played keyboards and drums on this song. The Tennessee-bred, Los Angeles-based artist has produced and/or performed with a number of popular artists including Beck, Beyoncé and Pink as well as rapper, Luke Fiasco. He also composed the bluegrass style jingle for on-line travel site Expedia.com.
  • Fuse debuted atop the Billboard 200 All-Genre Album Chart. It arrived at #1 in the United States, Canada and Australia simultaneously, the first time that a male country artist had ever done so.
  • Urban penned the song with songwriter J.T. Harding, whose other hits include Jake Owen's "Alone With You." Keith actually had the first glimmer of the idea for the song in his car. "I had a day scheduled to write with him, and I had just gotten this song, this particular song that I heard and downloaded by a particular artist, and I loved the rhythm and the energy and the whole thing about it," recalled Keith. "I got J.T. and put him in the car, and turned it up as loud as I could and said, '[Yelling] We need something like this!' But a similar song structure – and the song was born of that."
  • When Urban played the song for the sold-out crowd during the 2014 CMA Music Festival, he said it was about "reminiscing and missing an old love."
  • Cars figure several times on the Fuse album. As well as this song, two other tracks, "Cop Car" and "Red Camaro" have a motor vehicle in the title. "The car theme figures heavily in a lot of my songs, 'cause I love cars and I love listening to music in cars, and I love all of the moments – all kinds of moments that we humans experience only in cars," said Urban. "As couples and arguments and makeup sessions and make-out sessions and everything, I just love everything to do with cars."
  • Though this song follows Urban's familiar car theme, it is actually about something a little different than just driving a motor vehicle. "I love trucks, cars, everything, and we've got some truck songs on the record," he told ABC News Radio. "But 'Somewhere in My Car' is really … it's not really about a car so much as it is what happens in the backseat of a car."
  • The song's music video was directed by John Urbano, who also filmed Urban's previous clip for "Cop Car." Shot in Cincinnati during his Raise 'Em Up Summer Tour, the visual features models Jehane Paris from Miami and Brazilian Rodrigo Calazans. "When Keith asked me to direct the video my head started swimming with ideas because the song is so cinematic," Said Urbano. "I wanted to make a music video where the imagery and song writing felt like they were created at the same time."

"From the beginning we both wanted this video to be hot with the concept being about how this guy goes mildly crazy thinking about his past relationship," he continued. "In his mind he's 'somewhere in his car', where he's having multiple flashbacks that build emotionally with each chorus."

    Crumbs From Your Table Lyrics

    From the brightest star
    Comes the blackest hole
You had so much to offer
Why did you offer your soul?
I was there for you, baby
    When you needed my help
    Would you deny for others
    What you demand for yourself?

    Cool down mama, cool off
    Cool down mama, cool off

You speak of sights and wonders
    I need something other
I would believe if I was able
But I'm waiting on the Crumbs From Your Table

You were pretty as a picture
It was all there to see
Then your face caught up with your psychology
With a mouth full of teeth
    You ate all your friends
And you broke every heart thinking every heart mends

You speak of signs and wonders
    But I need something other
I would believe if I was able
But I'm waiting on the crumbs from your table

Where you live should not decide
Whether you live or whether you die
    Three to a bed
    Sister Ann, she said
    Dignity passes by

And you speak of signs and wonders
    But I need something other
I would believe if I was able
I'm waiting on the crumbs from your table, hey

  • Bono wrote the lyrics about how rich countries (especially the United States) give third-world countries only the crumbs from their tables, meaning very little relief in helping these poor nations out of debt: "Where you live should not decide, whether you live or whether you die." Bono has been involved in a number of humanitarian efforts.
  • Bono (from Q Magazine November 2004): "I went to speak to Christian fundamentalist groups in America to convince them to give money to fight AIDS in Africa. It was like getting blood from a stone. I told them about a hospice in Uganda where so many people were dying they had to sleep three to a bed. Sister Anne, who I mention in the song, works at that hospice. Her office is a sewer."

Hey, mom and dad, you would be happy for me
I found god, but she was nothing like he seemed
In those books, on that screen that pushed in front of me
I now know that I would rather be dead

    The grass is cut
    The snakes will show
    I see them all
    They're all over

To all the girls that would be perfect for me
Break my jaw so we can't talk about me
Since my mouth is bigger than my heart could ever be
There's no shame in screaming at deaf weddings

    The grass is cut
    The snakes will show
    I see them all
    They're all over
The grass is cut and now I know myself
    They're all over

    To all those girls
    To all those boys
To all those girls that will turn all those boys into those men

To all the girls that want to save me
To all the boys - you're just like me
To all the girls that fucking hate me

  • Vocalist Jason Butler told Kerrang! magazine about the inspiration for this song: "Slightly embarrassingly, I wrote it one night after having shared some rather intimate moments with this girl," he said laughing. "I woke up, and there was a bunch of things I wanted to say to explain what I was thinking was going to happen between her and I following that intimacy... But I was a pussy and I was too scared to wake her up. I just wanted to really explain to her what was going on in my head."
  • Butler explained the lyric about God to Kerrang! "The idea was me considering women to be somewhat of a deity," he said. "And while I do find women to be fantastic and beautiful and givers of life, I was looking at it more in the romantic sense, taking over everything in my life and putting these strange, rose-coloured blinders on, as opposed to lenses."
  • So why did Butler chose to spell 'Cult' with a 'V'? "To reference older spellings," he explained "There are a lot of eras where they would just use the 'V' as a 'U.' It just sort of represents an archaic idea."

    My Boo Lyrics

    There's always that one person
That will always have your heart
    You'll never see it coming
'Cause you're blinded from the start
Know that you're that one for me
It's clear for everyone to see
Oh baby ooh you'll always be My Boo

    I don't know bout cha'll
But I know about us and uh
    This is the only way
    We know how to rock
    I don't know bout cha'll
But I know about us and uh
    This is the only way
    We know how to rock

    Do you remember girl
I was the one who gave you your first kiss
    'Cause I remember girl
I was the one who said put your lips like this
Even before all the fame and
    People screaming your name
Girl I was there and you were my baby

    [Chorus]
It started when we were younger girl
    You were mine my boo
    Now another brother's taking over
But its still in your eyes my boo
Even though we used to argue it's alright
I know we haven't seen each other
In awhile but you will always be my boo

I was in love with you when we were younger
    You were mine my boo
And I see it from time to time
I still feel like my boo
And I can see it no matter
How I try to hide my boo
Even though there's another man who's in my life
You will always be my boo

    Yes I remember boy
    'Cause after we kissed
I could only think about your lips
    Yes I remember boy
    The moment I knew
    You were the one
I could spend my life with
    Even before all the fame
    And people screaming your name
I was there and you were my baby

    [Chorus]

I was in love with you when we were younger
    You were mine my boo
And I see it from time to time
I still feel like my boo
And I can see it no matter
How I try to hide my boo
Even though there's another man in my life
You will always be my boo

My oh, my oh my oh, my oh, my boo
My oh, my oh my oh, my oh, my boo

    [Chorus]

    I don't know bout cha'll
But I know about us and uh
    This is the only way
    We know how to rock
    I don't know bout cha'll
But I know about us and uh
    This is the only way
    We know how to rock

    My Boo
  • In this duet between Usher and Alicia Keys, they play a couple who have split up, but still have strong feelings for each other. Usher explains that they got together when they were very young, and now that she's with another man, it's tearing him up, but he'll always consider her his boo (special girl). Keys explains that she feels the same way, and that even though there is another man in her life, Usher will always be her boo.
  • This song brought the Boo back after a long absence. The term "boo" (derived from the French "beau," meaning beautiful), caught on in the mid-'90s, and in 1996 the one-hit-wonder Ghost Town DJ's went to #31 US with a different song called "My Boo." That same year, The Almighty RSO had a modest hit with "You Could Be My Boo," but that was the last of the charting Boo songs until this Usher/Alicia Keys collaboration.

The connection between the 1996 "My Boo" and the 2004 song is Jermaine Dupri: he released the former on his So So Def label, and he produced the later.
  • Jermaine Dupri, Alicia Keys and Usher wrote this song with Manuel Seal and Adonis Shropshire. Seal, who often worked with Dupri, also co-wrote Usher's "You Make Me Wanna"; Shropshire's co-writes include "And I" for Ciara and "Last Chance" for Ginuwine.

    Don't Worry Lyrics

Don't Worry 'bout me, it's all over now
Though I may be blue, I'll manage somehow.
Love can't be explained, can't be controlled
One day it's warm, next day it's cold.

    Don't pity me 'cause I'm feelin' blue;
Don't be ashamed, it might have been you.
    Oh-oh-oh, oh, love,
Kiss me one time, then go, love,
I understand, don't worry 'bout me.

Sweet, sweet, sweet love, I want you to be
As happy as I when you loved me.
I'll never forget you, your sweet memory
It's all over now, don't worry 'bout me.

When one heart tells one heart, one heart good-bye,
One heart is free; one heart will cry.
Oh-oh-oh, oh, sweet, sweet baby, sweet baby, sweet,
It's all right, don't worry 'bout me.

    Don't Worry
  • This was Marty Robbins' seventh #1 on the Country chart - it stayed at the peak position for ten weeks.
  • The song features an early example of guitar distortion. The effect was due an electrical fault in session guitarist Grady Martin's mixing-desk for his six-string bass, whilst recording on the record. Although Martin was unhappy with the sound, it was so effective that Robbins' producer left it as it was.
