Jesus Of Suburbia Lyrics

I'm the son of rage and love
The Jesus Of Suburbia
The bible of none of the above
On a steady diet of
Soda Pop and Ritalin
No one ever died for my
Sins in hell
As far as I can tell
At least the ones that I got away with

And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That don't believe in me

Get my television fix
Sitting on my crucifix
The living room in my private womb
While the Moms and brats are away
To fall in love and fall in debt
To alcohol and cigarettes
And Mary Jane
To keep me insane
Doing someone else's cocaine

And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That don't believe in me

At the center of the earth
In the parking lot
Of the 7-11 where I was taught
The motto was just a lie

It says home is where your heart is
But what a shame
Cause everyone's heart
Doesn't beat the same
It's beating out of time

City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
Signs misleading to nowhere
City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care

I read the graffiti
In the bathroom stall
Like the holy scriptures of a shopping mall
And so it seemed to confess

It didn't say much
But it only confirmed that
The center of the earth
Is the end of the world
And I could really care less

City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
Signs misleading to nowhere
City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care

I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't care

I don't care

Everyone's so full of shit
Born and raised by hypocrites
Hearts recycled but never saved
From the cradle to the grave
We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the Middle East
We are the stories and disciples of
The Jesus of suburbia

Land of make believe
And it don't believe in me
Land of make believe
And I don't believe
And I don't care!

Dearly beloved are you listening?
I can't remember a word that you were saying
Are we demented or am I disturbed?
The space that's in between insane and insecure

Oh therapy, can you please fill the void?
Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed
Nobody's perfect and I stand accused
For lack of a better word, and that's my best excuse

To live, and not to breathe
Is to die, in tragedy
To run, to run away
To find, what you believe

And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
I lost my faith to this
This town that don't exist
So I run, I run away
To the lights of masochists

And I, leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
And I, walked this line
A million and one fucking times
But not this time

I don't feel any shame
I wont apologize
When there ain't nowhere you can go
Running away from pain
When you've been victimized
Tales from another broken home

Oh you're leaving
You're leaving
You're leaving
Are you leaving home?

Jesus Of Suburbia
  • Jesus Of Suburbia is the main character of American Idiot. He's a kid who hates his family, friends, and home.
  • This song is broken down into five sections:

Part I. Jesus Of Suburbia: This is an introduction of the character and tells about his home life.

Part II. City Of The Damned: This takes place in a 7/11 parking lot where he got into a fight and first realized he hated his friends and home: "The 7/11 where I was taught, the motto was a lie, it says home is where the heart is, but everyone's heart doesn't beat the same." The lyric, "At the end of another lost highway," refers to the group of kids who hang out under the highway where once again he doesn't fit in.

Part III. I Don't Care: This is where he becomes an outcast hating everyone and everything, and also in the story this is where St. Jimmy (a character Jesus created to heal the pain of a lost girlfriend) ties in, saying he hates everything now. This is where he considers leaving home.

Part IV. Dearly Beloved: Not much is known on this part. It's believed to be the peaceful, yet hard twilight between anger and happiness where you are content.

Part V. Tales From Another Broken Home: This is where Jesus just gives up and leaves. He doesn't know where he's going, but he's just going far away: "Running away from pain when you've been victimized." This is where he's leaving everyone that hated and hurt him, sort of starting over and beginning a new life.
  • Billie Joe Armstrong stated on VH1 Storytellers that the line, "While the mums and Brads are away" means that in this day and age children speak to their step parents on a first name basis.
  • In the video, the Jesus of Suburbia character has tattoos similar to Billie Joe Armstrong: a skull and crossbones on his upper arm, and "EPBM" on his left wrist. The actor who played Jesus of Suburbia is Lou Taylor Pucci, who appeared in the movies Fifty Pills and Thumbsucker.
  • This song was somewhat of a rebirth for the band. Armstrong explained: "It broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be. Lyrically, it's everything about my past, but at the same time, written on the outside as well. That song is like purging everything, throwing it out."
  • "Right after I came up with [the phrase] 'American Idiot,' I came up with [the album's protagonist], 'Jesus of Suburbia,'" Armstrong told MTV. 'I felt like it crossed that line between church and state or politics and religion. I thought, 'How would I interpret the Bible even though I've never really read it?' So, there's no burning bush, but there's burning towns and ethics."
  • Armstrong felt like the band reached a point of no return after creating the track. He told VH1 Storytellers: "'Jesus of Suburbia' took a long time. We were driving back, because we were in the studio up in Oakland, and the only thing I could think of was like, 'holy s---t, I can't believe we just made this thing,' and there was this fear, like there's no looking back now."
  • American Idiot was adapted into a stage musical in 2009, including an expanded storyline following three disenchanted youths living in suburbia set to music from the album and other Green Day offerings. The band didn't appear in the production, but Armstrong did occasionally participate as the St. Jimmy character.

    What A Shame Lyrics

They dug the shade of his mop
They liked the way that he spoke
They flew him out of the sticks
And out him up in the smoke
They gave him chocolate and cheese
They told him he was the next
Young son to some young life
    Straight from the crest
The way he spat at his mic
    His lyrics couldn't be fresher
They said he'd be a superstar
If he could handle the pressure
After they put it to paper
    They took him to tea
And told him just a couple changes
    That they wanted to see

    Oh What A Shame
But it's easy, can't you see?
    Oh what a shame
That they won't ever let you be

They said his hair would be better
    If he colored it black
And that he wouldn't sound as harsh if he could tone it all back
They dressed him up in a craze
    To make him look pretty
They said the kids would dig
If he looked like he came from the city
They listened back to his cut
    His music was tight
But if he changed a couple lyrics
    In the chorus it might
    Sound fresher than ever
    A radio hit
And all the ladies will sing it
When they get into the pit

    Oh what a shame
But it's easy, can't you see?
    Oh what a shame
That they won't ever let you be, no!

    Oh what a shame
But it's easy, can't you see?
    Oh what a shame
That they won't ever let you be

  • Vocalist Josh McClorey explained the song's meaning to NME: "It's about the music industry, and the way people are pushed around. We've already seen it, when record labels want to change the thing that was the reason they signed the band in the first place."

    Torn Lyrics

I thought I saw a man brought to life
He was warm, he came around like he was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry
Well you couldn't be that man I adored
You don't seem to know, don't seem to care
    What your heart is for
No, I don't know him anymore

There's nothin' where we used to lie
    Conversation has run dry
    That's what's going on
    Nothing's fine, I'm Torn

    I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel, I'm cold and I am shamed
    Lying naked on the floor
    Illusion never changed
    Into something real
Wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
    You're a little late
    I'm already torn

So I guess the fortune teller's right
I should have seen just what was there
    And not some holy light
But you crawled beneath my veins and now
    I don't care, I have no luck
I don't miss it all that much
    There's just so many things
    That I can't touch, I'm torn

    I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel, I'm cold and I am shamed
    Lying naked on the floor
    Illusion never changed
    Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
    You're a little late
    I'm already torn

    Torn

There's nothing where he used to lie
    My inspiration has run dry
And that's what is goin' on
    Nothin's right, I'm torn

    I'm all out of faith
    This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
    Lying naked on the floor
    Illusion never changed
    Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn

    I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel, I'm cold and I'm ashamed
Bound and broken on the floor

    Torn
  • In 1991, the songwriters Anne Preven and Scott Cutler wrote this song with Phil Thornalley, a producer who had worked on albums by The Cure, XTC, and Edwyn Collins. The song was first recorded by the Danish singer Lis Sørensen as "Braendt," with Danish lyrics written by Elisabeth Nielsen, appearing on Sørensen's 1993 album Under Stjernerne Et Sted.

Preven and Cutler formed a band called Ednaswap, and released the first English version of "Torn" on their 1995 debut album. Ednaswap got little attention, but the song was released in Denmark again in 1996, this time by the Norwegian singer Trine Rein and with the English lyrics.

"Torn" found its way to Natalie Imbruglia when the song's co-writer Phil Thornalley ended up working on her first album. Imbruglia is an Australian actress who was on the Aussie Soap Opera Neighbours from 1992-1994 (the same one Kylie Minogue starred in). Thornalley had her record the song, and it was released as her first single in 1997, launching her singing career. Imbruglia's debut album Left Of The Middle was released in 1998 with "Torn" as the first track. Thornalley co-wrote five other songs on the LP, and became one of the most popular producers in pop, with a client list including Ronan Keating, Bryan Adams, and Mel C. He and Preven teamed up again to write the #1 UK hit "Mama Do" for Pixie Lott.
  • This song has a very strange history on the Billboard charts because it was popular at a time when the Hot 100 methodology changed. The song was a huge hit in America throughout the summer of 1998, spending 11 weeks on top of Airplay/Radio Songs chart. The song was released only as a radio promo single, however, as Imbruglia's label withheld commercial availability in the hope that consumers would instead purchase her album. Songs that were not available for purchase as singles were ineligible for the Hot 100 until December 5, 1998, when Billboard revised the policy, allowing songs not available at retail to appear on the chart with airplay factored into the ranking. "Torn" was at the end of its run at this point, but still managed to make the chart at #42 that week before dropping off two weeks later.

This #42 chart position is very deceptive, since the song was far more popular. Most other hits of this era that were not issued as singles and thus ineligible for the Hot 100 have not placing on the chart at all - No Doubt's "Don't Speak" and The Wallflowers' "One Headlight" are examples.
  • Before it exploded on the UK charts, Imbruglia's version was shopped around to record labels in the US, and was turned down by every one of them. That is, until the song became a hit and everyone wanted a piece of the pie. Phil Thornalley recalled in a Songfacts interview : "Everybody in the US said, 'No thanks.' And then, of course, it became a massive hit here in the UK, and the very same A&R man who had said 'I don't want it' in New York was now trying to get his name put on the album to say that he was the executive responsible for it. And that's the music business. That's quite cynical but that's true. That's how it works."
  • So, what was so special about Imbruglia's rendition anyway? Thornalley told us: "Obviously, she was a pop star and had a background as an actor so she looked the part. She knew how to make a great video and the quality to her voice seemed to suit the song because the song is quite anxious, and yet her voice is quite sweet. So, I think that made it an attractive union of emotions."
  • The video was directed by Alison Maclean, a Canadian filmmaker who also did Imbruglia's clips for "Big Mistake" and "Wishing I Was There." Maclean was mostly known for her short films Kitchen Sink and Crush, and her time working on films informed her approach to the "Torn" video, which has a very casual feel, intercutting off-action scenes (crew members giving direction, Imbruglia stretching and getting ready) throughout. The result is part acting, part outtake, which created a very intimate feel as it was all shot on the same set.

In many cases, the best footage on any shoot comes when the actors think the cameras aren't rolling, since they're relaxed and genuine. Maclean got this footage by keeping the camera going during some of these down times. The acting parts were based on a scene from the film Last Tango in Paris.

"I knew exactly what direction I wanted to go, you fu--ing weirdos! [Laughs] I wanted it to be a rollercoaster ride. I wanted it to be soft and then hard. I wanted it to be a mindf--k since that's what life is. Life is changeable. Life goes like that. Nothing stays the same. That's a person right there. That was a female friend I was talking about. It's self-explanatory. You talk all of this s--t about me, but then you stay. What the f--k are you doing? You must 'Love 2 Dislike Me.' Get the f--k away from me. How about that? It's just my heart coming out. I don't need that static. It's a beautiful fu--ing rollercoaster ride man."

    Sweet Dreams
  • This Country classic was written by the Tennessee songwriter Don Gibson in 1955. The song conveys the frustration and resignation that he was never going to make that girl his own but that she would always be there in his dreams.
  • Don Gibson wrote this song while he was working as a songwriter for Acuff-Rose publishing. It became his first hit as a songwriter when Faron Young recorded it, taking it to #2 on the Country chart in 1956.

Gibson started recording as a solo artist in 1957, and the following year scored a #1 Country hit with "Oh Lonesome Me," which he also wrote. With his solo career established, Gibson released his own version of "Sweet Dreams" as a single in 1960, taking it to #6 on the Country chart and cracking the Hot 100 at #93. Patsy Cline revived the song in 1963, making #5 Country and #44 on the Hot 100 with her version. When the Louisiana songwriter Tommy McLain recorded it in 1966, his version became the biggest mainstream hit, going to #15 on the Hot 100 tally.

Other artists who recorded the song include Reba McEntire, Loretta Lynn and Emmylou Harris.
  • Elvin Bishop recorded this on his 2005 album Gettin' My Groove Back. His version is an instrumental featuring a slide guitar. Said Bishop: "Slide is kind of like the voice I never had. I can sing as high or as low as I want to, put as much sustain, as much treble... Tommy McLain is the record I really like. They called it 'Swamp Pop' in the '70s. He sang a really soulful version of that, it's what I base my version on. Using my slide like his voice." (Check out our interview with Elvin Bishop.)

    Lived a Lie Lyrics

    Well somebody told me
That I would be a dreamer for life
Somebody told me I would never reach the other side
Well you seemed old news, crossed your fingers
    I'm yours to lose
What if I told you, that things will never improve

And if I Lived a Lie
Would someone meet me on the other side
So I can burn up bright,
(so I can burn, so I can burn)

    The grass is always greener,
Someone else's past is always cleaner,
But I'm a believer, but there's a fool in all of us

And if I lived a lie
Would someone meet me on the other side
So I can burn up bright

Oh, I don't really know where I just go
No, I don't really know where I just go so
Lived a lie just tonight, tonight

We are believers, we are believers [x7]
    We are, we are.

    If I lived a lie
Would someone meet me on the other side
So I can burn up bright

And if a lived a lie
Would someone meet me on the other side
So I can burn up bright

Oh, I don't really know where I just go
No, I don't really know where I just go so
Lived a lie just tonight, tonight
    And burn up bright.

    Lived a Lie
  • This is the first cut to be lifted from You Me At Six's fourth studio album, Cavalier Youth. It was the British band's first release following their new album deal with BMG.

You Me At Six worked on the song in Los Angeles with Neal Avron, who has worked with notable artists such as All Time Low, Forever the Sickest Kids and Yellowcard. The song was premiered on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show September 2, 2013.
  • Speaking with Kerrang! Magazine, vocalist Josh Franceschi explained the background to the song and why they incorporated marching band style drumming and gang vocals. "Through the last six years there would always be people who said, 'Oh I don't think you can do that.' But we always believed in ourselves even if nobody else did," he said. "Marching goes hand in hand with showing unity and 'we are believers' was a line that really needed to be exaggerated for people to get the point. Five people against the world – as corny as that sounds."
  • The song features on the soundtrack for the FIFA 14 computer game.
  • Francheschi explained to Kerrang! how the song came together: "We were listening to a lot of pop music," he said, "so we were like, 'We've got to make a big hooky chorus, without it being lame.' Matt (Barnes, bass) said, 'I'm not going to play for the whole first verse,' so, when the bass comes in, it sounds really big."
  • Franchesci told Kerrang! the lyrics are about being in You Me at Six. "At that time, everything was great in our little bubble," he said. "Then as soon as we went out of that bubble, we were like, 'What the f--- are we going to do?' It's about how, in music and life, you only really need to believe in yourself."
  • You Me at Six scored their first UK #1 album when Cavalier Youth topped the chart in its debut week.

    Something's on my mind
It's been for quite some time
This time I'm on to you

    So where's the other face
    The face I heard before
    Your head trip's boring me

Let's nuke the bridge we torched two thousand times before
This time we'll blast it all to hell

I've had this burning in my gut now for so long
My belly's aching now to say

    Stuck down in a rut
    Of dislogic and smut
A side of you well hid

When it's all said and done
It's real and it's been fun
But was it all real fun?

Let's nuke the bridge we torched two thousand times before
This time we'll blast it all to hell

I've had this burning in my guts now for so long
My belly's aching now to say

    To say
    You're just
    A fuck
I can't explain it 'cause I think you suck

    I'm taking pride
In telling you to fuck off and die

I've had this burning in my guts now for so long
My belly's aching now to say

I'm taking pleasure in announcing this to you
So listen up 'cause you might miss

    You're just
    A fuck
I can't explain it 'cause I think you suck

    I'm taking pride
In telling you to fuck off and die

    Good night

    I was alone
    I was all by myself
    No one was looking
    I was thinking of you

    Oh yeah did I mention
    I was all by myself
    All by myself
    All by myself
    All by myself

    I went to your house
    But no one was there
    I went in your room
    I was all by myself

    I remember we had
    Such wonderful times
    When I'm all by myself
    All by myself

    Reflektor Lyrics

Trapped in a prism, in a prism of light
Alone in the darkness, darkness of white
We fell in love, alone on a stage
    In the reflective age

Entre la nuit, la nuit et l’aurore
Entre les royaumes, des vivants et des morts
    If this is heaven
    I don't know what it’s for
If I can’t find you there
    I don't care

I thought, I found a way to enter
    It’s just a Reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
I thought, I found the connector
    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

Now, the signals we send, are deflected again
We're still connected, but are we even friends?
We fell in love when I was nineteen
And I was staring at a screen

Entre la nuit, la nuit et l’aurore
Entre les voyants, les vivants et les morts
    If this is heaven
    I need something more
Just a place to be alone
    'Cause you're my home

I thought, I found a way to enter
    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
I thought, I found the connector
    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor) Just a reflektor

    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

    reflektor (Just a reflektor)
(Just a reflektor) just a reflektor
(Just a reflektor) just a reflektor (reflektor)
    (Just a reflektor)
    (Just a reflektor)
(Just a reflektor, just a reflektor)
(Just a reflektor, just a reflektor)

Just a reflection, of a reflection
Of a reflection, of a reflection, of a reflection
Will I see you on the other side? (Just a reflektor)
We all got things to hide (Just a reflektor)
    It’s just a reflection of a reflection
Of a reflection, of a reflection, of a reflection
Will I see you on the other side? (Just a reflektor)
We all got things to hide (Just a reflektor)

    Alright, let's go back
Our song escapes, on little silver discs
Our love is plastic, we'll break it to bits
I want to break free, but will they break me?
Down, down, down, don't mess around

I thought, I found a way to enter
    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
I thought, I found the connector
    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

    It’s just a reflektor

    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)

Thought you would bring me to the resurrector
Turns out it was just a reflektor (It’s just a reflektor)
Thought you would bring to me the resurrector
Turns out it was just a reflektor (It’s just a reflektor)
Thought you would bring to me the resurrector
Turns out you were just a reflektor
    It’s just a reflektor (It's just a reflektor)
    (It's just a reflektor) Just a reflektor

    Just a reflektor
    Just a reflektor
    Just a reflektor
Will I see you on the other side?
    It’s just a reflektor
Will I see you on the other side? (reflektor)
We all got things to hide (reflektor)
    Just a reflektor
Will I see you on the other side?

    Reflektor
  • The title track and lead single of Arcade Fire's fourth album finds frontman Win Butler singing about feeling lost and disconnected from modern life and yearning for simpler times. The song was released on September 9, 2013.
  • The song was produced by James Murphy, who is best known for his work with LCD Soundsystem. It features backing vocals by David Bowie, who has been a fan of Arcade Fire for many years. Win Butler once said of their famous supporter, "I remember when we first met David Bowie and he said, 'You'll definitely be big in the UK.' He was always enthusiastic about the band."
  • The black and white video was directed by Anton Corbijn who has famously shot visuals and photos for U2, The Killers and Depeche Mode. It features the band wearing oversized papier-mâché heads sat in the back of a truck, which is being driven by Win Butler and his wife/ co-vocalist Régine Chassagne.
  • A second interactive video directed by regular collaborator Vincent Morisset was also released. It was filmed on location in Haiti, the childhood home of Regine Chassagne.
  • Chassagne sings a couple of lines in her native French, which translates as:

"Between the night, night and dawn.
Between the kingdom of the living and the dead."
  • The album cover is an image of Auguste Rodin's sculpture of Orpheus and Eurydice.
  • Multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry told NME how Bowie ended up singing backing vocals. "It was just after The Next Day had come out," he explained. "He basically just came by the studio in New York while we were mixing, just to have a listen to the stuff we were doing. He offered to lend us his services because he really liked the song. In fact, he basically threatened us - he was like, 'If you don't hurry up and mix this song, I might just steal it from you!' So we thought, well why don't we go one better, why don't you sing on our version? Thankfully he obliged, and we were really happy about that."
  • Multi-instrumentalist Will Butler told Jam! Music that his brother and sister-in-law wrote the song with a third vocalist in mind. "When Win and Regine were writing the song ... he had kind of pictured this third point of view cause Reflektor is this back and forth between two characters," he explained. "And I forget how it happened (but) we were in town mixing Reflektor in New York and (Bowie) was going to come by. And I was like, 'Well, David Bowie is a really good outside perspective,' and like apropos, not totally random. Like kind of in the spirit of some of the (late '70s-early '80s dance flavoured) music that we were making that it felt aesthetically appropriate also."
  • Though David Bowie doesn't appear in the song's music clip, his likeness does. "There is a David Bowie mask, in the very last second of the film, of the video," Will Butler explained, "that creepy mask that Win is wearing is in fact a David Bowie mask."
  • Speaking with The Sun, Win Butler recalled the time the band spent recording with Bowie: "What was cool was that we were mixing at Electric Lady studios in New York," he said. "The line he does on 'Reflektor' echoes the line he does on 'Fame,' the song he recorded in the very same studio with John Lennon. So he showed up and said, 'The last time I was here I was recording with John Lennon.' And we looked at each other to say, 'And here you are recording with Arcade Fire."
  • The song finds Win Butler singing lines like, "We fell in love when I was 19, now we're staring at a screen." He told Rolling Stone: "It's not like I'm romanticizing it. I think that life is incredibly difficult and it's more amazing to see people that don't have access to food or clean water throw a party. It's not like I'm trying to sing about their experiences. I was more learning from what I saw and applying it to my own life, lyrically. I'm not trying to tell other people's stories. We're just trying to allow an experience to change you."

    Bad Boys
  • This song was recorded twice. The first version was on Inner Circle's 1987 album One Way, and a second version was recorded in 1989 for their 1991 album Identified. While Inner Circle worked on Identified, the television network FOX chose the second version of this song to be the theme for the reality TV show Cops, which premiered on March 11, 1989. As it drew larger and larger audiences all over the world, the song (that is the second recording) became a cultural hallmark, with the song representing anyone who was in trouble with the law.
  • When Cops was syndicated in Sweden at the turn of the decade, the song was released as a single there in 1991 and quickly reached #1. Soon it was a hit in many other European countries. It was not until 1993 when the song was issued as a single in the US. After the song's success in America, the band released an album in 1994 with this as the title track; the album won a Grammy in 1995 for Best Reggae Album.
  • In 1995, this was used for the soundtrack of the comedy film of the same name.
  • A completely different song with the exact same title was a hit in 1983 for Wham!

Freakin' perfect and five foot ten, just wanna punch her lip, yeah
'Cause I know I've been wasting time tryna catch your eye, uh
Yeah I know that I been so blind thinking that I'm your type

And now I'm at home, I'm all alone
'Bout to pick up the telephone
Got to call my genie so he knows, yeah

I Wish I was tall, I wish I was fast
Wish I could shop with a bag full of cash
'Cause If I want you, I gotta have that (Come, come kiss me boy)
I wish I had style, I wish I had flash
Wish I woke up with a butt and a rack
'Cause If I want you, I gotta have that (Come, come kiss me boy)

Uh-huh, yeah baby, I'm gonna keep it real, boy you da one I want
I don't own any five inch heels, just got my Nike's on

Aston Martin look retarded like the coup gone crazy
I'm not sure what kinda fella you like
But I can give you paradise, have it however you like
I'm talking solitaire iced out, ring, watch, necklace
Ain't no talking reckless, girl, I'm certified respected, girl
Yeah, you like to run your mouth, well you about to learn a lesson, girl
Yeah, you the one but I'll replace you in a second, girl
And I ain't even trying to see you naked, girl wait
    There I go exaggerate
Clearly carried away but what I'm saying you construed that
I wanna be wherever you at
So you wishing you could kiss me do you really wanna do that, eh?

  • Cher Lloyd penned this song with Savan Kotecha, who has co-written many of One Direction's hit singles. It delivers an uplifting message about self-acceptance within a catchy tune. Cher explained to Artist Direct why she wanted to sing about that particular subject matter. "For me, being in this industry can be in tough as it is," she said. "Then, having that pressure to always look and feel your best is probably the hardest bit about it. I honestly feel like it would be crazy to meet someone who could say they're one-hundred percent happy with themselves. I just don't think that exists. I really think it's important for my young fans to understand it doesn't exist."

"You could meet a six foot model who's the most beautiful girl you'll ever see in your life," Lloyd continued, " but I'm pretty sure she'll have some issues she's not quite happy about. This is what it's all about. It's only recently that I've come to terms with that myself. I just turned twenty, and it's time to be like, 'Okay, well I'm not happy about a few things, but I'm not let going to make me unhappy or make me lose sight of what I'm in this for!' If you get what I mean..."
  • The song features a verse by American rapper T.I. It was premièred on August 31, 2013, and released as a digital download three days later.
  • The song finds Cher asking a magic genie to grant her wishes to fix her flaws in order to get her crush to notice her. "The message behind the song is basically that I have many insecurities and I just honestly feel like I've never met anyone and will not meet anyone that is not 100 percent happy with themselves," she explained to MTV News. "It's never going to happen, but I think my main message is for you to be able to understand and embrace the fact that nobody's perfect, but to be happy at the same time and not let that overwrite the fact that you need happiness in life and you shouldn't be worrying about that your boobs aren't big enough or your butt is big enough, get on with it."

Sarah Beth is scared to death
To hear what the doctor will say
    She hasn't been well
Since the day that she fell

And the bruises just won't go away
So she sits and see waits with her mother and dad
    Flips through an old magazine
'Til a the nurse with a smile

    Stands at the door
And says will you please come with me

Sarah Beth is scared to death
Cause the doctor just told her the news
Between the red cells and white
    Something's not right
But we're gonna take care of you

Six chances in ten it won't come back again
With the therapy were gonna try
    It's just been approved
    It's the strongest there is
I think we caught it in time

    Sarah Beth closes her eyes
    She dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love is holding her close
And the soft wind in blowing her hair

Sarah Beth is scared to death
As she sits holding her mom
Says it would be a mistake
    For someone to take
A girl with no hair to the prom

Oh, just this morning right there on her pillow
Was the cruelest of any surprise
And she cried when she gathered it all in her hands
The proof that she couldn't deny

    Sarah Beth closes her eyes
    She dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love was holding her close
And the soft wind is blowing her hair

    Its quarter to seven
    That boys at the door
And her daddy ushers him in
And when he takes off his cap
    They all start to cry
Cause this mornin' where his hair had been
    Softly she touches just Skin

    And they go dancin'
Around and around without any cares
And her very first true love was holding her close
And for a moment she isn't scared

Them broads before me was locals
Through customs accustom your wardrobe, damn
Stamped passports where they all pass ports
    Til the clocks fast forward
    There'll be dark blue shores
    Where they don't do chores
    We just get chauffeured
